What they did to me was cruel and almost made me have my leg off. They almost killed me and that’s scary.” Jynnie was released from hos- pital Friday afternoon after spending almost one month in hospital recovering from a vi- cious attack by dogs. Jynnie suffered more than 150 bite wounds and 13 tears to her arms and legs after being mauled by dogs while at her g randmother’s Goodwood home Oct. 26. The first thing Jynnie did when she came home was visit her classmates. Then she went to her favourite burger joint, where she was treated to a free meal; to a local grocery store, where owners gave her flowers; and to her mother’s workplace, where they gave her a card. But despite a busy day she still wanted to have a sit down with the News Advertiser, enough so that she had her mother visit our newsroom the day before to set up the ap- pointment. Jynnie Kent, the 11-year-old victim of a vicious attack by dogs at her grandmother’s house last month, is finally back home from hospital with her mom Shelley Low. Jynnie will have to undergo extensive therapy to recover from the mauling, but the little girl has maintained a positive spirit. Held Friday, Nov. 28, the event is expected to draw MPPs from Durham and Northumberland and. The guest list includes Liberals Lou Rinaldi of Northumberland and Wayne Arthurs of Picker- ing-Ajax-Uxbridge. Progressive Conservative MPPs expected include Jim Flaherty of Whitby- Ajax, Jerry Ouellette of Os- hawa, and Durham’s John O’- Toole. Kim Cearns, political ac- tion officer of the north Durham chapter of the Regis- tered Nurses Association of Ontario, believes nurses need to become politically active if they want to see change. “We have issues of staffing shortages and we need to deal with that and how to better uti- lize what we have available,” she said, adding questions were sent to guests to ensure main concerns would be addressed. Laurie Cline, chapter presi- dent for Durham Northumber- land, says main concerns in- clude primary health care, lack of primary resources in Durham and underutilization of nurse practitioners who could fill the void of doctors. “There’s also concern about privatization schemes, but Lib- eral candidates have already said no to privatization of MRIs and that sort of thing,” she said. She says the Durham chap- ter wants to see universal health care and equality in the system. “The role of nurses in the re- gion is set up for potential lay- offs,” she said. “We have an aging workforce and casualiza- tion is common.” Casualization means many nurses are hired on a casual basis. They are used to fill voids but aren’t provided pensions or sick benefits because they’re considered part-time staff. Ms. Cline says the system looks good on paper until something like SARS comes along and ca- sual nurses who normally di- vide their schedules between many hospitals are prevented from doing so because cross- staffing has the potential to transfer disease. Just three days pre- vious the sixth grader and her fami- ly launched a $2.2 million civil suit against the 53-year-old Goodwood woman. Ms. Laverdiere has been charged for allegedly coaching Jynnie and her 12-year-old sister Jyssie, who was witness to the incident, to mis- lead the police. She appears in court Dec. 22. The dog breeder consented to have two of the Dogue De Bordeaux destroyed but was in court Friday to fight for the lives of three others she and her husband Dennis claim weren’t involved in the attacks. Her case was adjourned until Dec. 16 at which time a hearing date will be set. Although a great animal lover with two dogs of her own, Jynnie said she feels no remorse for the destroyed dogs and the three others still await- ing their fate. That day, Jynnie remembers someone, but not specifically who, telling her to go outside and put her grandmother’s nine dogs inside their cages. She was putting the “girl” dogs in their cages and the “boy” dogs in the “boy” cages, when one fe- male named Olka stared at her in the eyes. Jynnie turned around and walked away when a male dog, Traveller, grabbed her by the jacket and began spinning her around. Four other dogs joined in and they pulled her shoes, shirt and pants off, she said. “I was out there for half an hour, it felt like,” she said. “They were all bit- ing me. I tried to scream until Olka bit my throat and I couldn’t scream anymore. I tried to play dead and they went away for a little bit and came back.” Seeing the attack through a win- dow, Jynnie’s grandfather came to the rescue. He tried to punch the dogs but they turned on him. A quick “hey” from Ms. Laverdiere fi- nally dispersed the dogs, Jynnie said. “I was awake through the whole thing. I thought I was going to die,” she added. She blacked out in the hospital, before being airlifted from Uxbridge to the Hospital for Sick Children. Once there, she endured 12 surg- eries and nearly lost her right leg. A vein was removed from her left leg to mend the torn main artery. Today, her arms and legs are striped in scars from stitches, but it’s a world of improvement from the early photos of her wounds. In them, her tiny limbs are littered with gap- ing wounds, much like pictures you see of shark victims. “She’s only allowed to go to the bathroom and back and she has to keep her foot elevated so the blood doesn’t pool at the bottom,” said her mother, Shelley Low. “She can wig- gle her toes, wave her toes, but she can’t stand on her own yet.” The family is currently looking for a new apartment, even though they just moved into this basement flat recently. But there’s no way Jynnie, on crutches, can do stairs. Every second day, she’ll have to return to the Hospital for Sick Chil- dren and have her dressings changed, take physiotherapy and have her grafts washed. Doctors say it will take two years of healing be- fore Jynnie undergoes plastic surgery for her wounds. “She’ll have to see a vascular sur- geon indefinitely,” added Ms. Low. “And she’ll have to have a couple more surgeries on her right leg and the vascular vein checked because they aren’t sure how it will adapt as she grows.” The attack hasn’t taken away her love of animals - Jynnie still dreams of being a veterinarian - but it has changed an already strained rela- tionship with her grandmother for- ever. A statement of claim against Mr. and Mrs. Laverdiere, and their land- lord Bert Tindall, alleges all three were negligent in allowing a dog kennel to operate illegally on the property and ignored a municipal order to remove some or all of the nine animals. It is also alleged the couple trained the nine dogs to be vicious and dangerous, that they failed to monitor the dogs properly and al- lowed the youngster to be alone with them. “(Jynnie’s) enjoyment of life has been lessened,” the statement of claim reads. “She will suffer perma- nent and serious disfigurements, scarring and injury.” Asked about the suit, Ms. Low said, “I just don’t feel you should send an 11-year-old child outside to round up nine big dogs.” Ms. Low said her mother had raised dogs for years, but she wasn’t aware the couple didn’t have a ken- nel license. She later found out they had been warned on three different occasions by bylaw officers. As for Jynnie, she’s struggling to understand her grandmother’s ac- tions. “Before this, I hardly saw her but I loved her, in a way,” she said. “But now I think she’s mean and selfish or she wouldn’t have tried to guard her dogs over her own granddaugh- ter.” “She would always say to me and my sister, ‘Who do you love?’ and we would say, ‘Grandma’,” Jynnie added. “She would say, ‘Good, be- cause I love you more than anything in this whole world.’ She lied.” www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, November 23, 2003 PAGE 5 A/P Call the Registered State Farm agent near you: When it comes to investing, turn to someone who’s been there for you all along. Province smoking ban won’t affect Durham BByy CCaarrllyy FFoosstteerr Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM —The throne speech promise of a provincewide smoking ban probably won’t affect the Re- gion’s plans. Specific details were lacking Thursday, with the speech only say- ing a smoking ban in public and work places would be in place in three years. Durham’s smoking bylaw is scheduled to come into ef- fect June 1, 2004, and the Region is “working toward” that, said Glen- dene Collins, a spokesman for the health department. “Whether or not it will impact us, we’ll have to wait to see how the provincewide ban unfolds,” she said. With the exception of racetracks, casinos and bingo halls - which can have up to a 50 per cent smoking - all public and work places must be smoke-free under Durham’s ban. That includes restaurants, bars, bowling alleys and recreation facili- ties. With no specifics available, there’s plenty of room to speculate gam- bling facilities could also be includ- ed, Ms. Collins said. “It depends on how the Province writes the legislation, depending on how restrictive or not theirs is,” she said. “Until... we’re proceeding with ours as written and as approved.” Grandmother sued over vicious dog attack ✦ Grandmother from page 1 P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, November 23, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Throne speech let-down Too many excuses and too much time in Liberal plan The Liberals are already breaking too many promises and making too many excuses. That's not a healthy way to begin life as our so-called 'new government.' Laying the blame for fiscal hard times completely at the hands of the former government is par for the course whenev- er there is a change of administration. After all, the NDP in 1990 was shocked by the surprise deficit left by the David Pe- terson Liberals. In 1995, the Tories were less shocked by a mammoth NDP deficit left by the Rae regime. Well before the election call, in plenty of time for the Liberals to prepare their platform, there were suggestions the Tories were running at least a $2-billion deficit. The $5.6-billion figure suggested earlier this month by former provincial auditor Erik Peters is a worst-case scenario estimate and applies to the fis- cal year ending March 31, 2004. That means the Liberals can take action now to abrogate much of the fiscal pain before April 1. Despite the best efforts of Premier Dalton McGuinty to cry the financial blues, voters can't help but feel they're being set up. Mr. McGuinty planned about $5 billion in tax cut roll- backs before his election, one promise he does plan to keep. We shouldn't be shocked next spring when Minister of Finance Greg Sorbara rises in the legislature and announces that the Liberals have managed to reduce or virtually eliminate the deficit. There will be kudos and handshakes all around. As for protection against skyrocketing hydro bills, the pre- mier, who promised he would keep the price frozen until 2006, has since jettisoned the idea. Who knows how high our bills will climb this winter? The premier made a very specific promise to cut auto insur- ance premiums by 10 per cent within 90 days of election and a further 10 per cent within 180 days. That's another pledge that likely won't be kept. Will the Liberals manage to bring class sizes down to 20 stu- dents maximum in kindergarten to Grade 3? Will they raise the Level 3 standard of provincial testing success across the province to 75 per cent of all students? Will they fill doctor and nursing shortages that are crippling the health-care system? They say they will do all these fine things, but it's a long shot. For now, it's mostly a case of wait-and-see. We're looking for evidence the Liberals will keep their key commitments. The honeymoon period for new governments lasts weeks, not months, and the clock is already ticking on this group. We must all exercise our right and duty TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: This year Remembrance Day fell the day after the election. How many cared enough to vote? How many re- membered we have the freedom to vote? When I hear of people saying 'why bother to vote, my vote won't matter, I don't have time to vote,' I get angry. When you don't vote you let others speak for you. You don't have any right to complain about the city, province or country because you didn't vote. When you vote you are trying to make a difference and that is what is important. Trying to make a difference and that is what is important. Trying to make the world a better place as those who fought for us were trying to do and are still doing. Maybe you don't know anyone who fought in a war. I do and I am proud of each and every one of them. My dad came within inches of losing his life in the Second World War. My dad was driving a jeep when he jumped out just in time. A bomb hit the jeep. The other soldiers didn't live to tell the story. The next time there is an election, take a few minutes and think of those who fought for our freedom and who are still fighting for us. Take the time to vote. If you can't get out on election day or don't know if you can, go to one of the advanced polls. Do it in the memory of your parents, g randparents and great grandparents, for everyone who has given their life for our freedom. Well, Pickering this is good- bye. It seems not so long ago we were saying hello for the first time. Yo u've taken me under your wing, showed me some great sights over the last year and now, at the end of the month, it's time for me to move on to the Motor City. But I take so many fond memo- ries gathered in such a short time. I'll never forget my first look inside the Pickering Nuclear Station, or the look of exhaustion on the faces of masked doctors and nurses dur- ing the height of sudden acute res- piratory syndrome at Rouge Val- ley, Ajax and Pickering hospital. Last January's fatal townhouse fire, which trapped two young sis- ters inside, will always haunt me. It was the pain of friends and family learning the news and months af- terwards, meeting the heroic young mother, fighting to over- come her loss. Life lessons are made of this stuff. Yes, it's been one wild ride here in Pickering, a dynamic City that could rival any in Durham for breaking news and hard-hitting is- sues. Here, you have had protests over illegal tree-cutting on the agricultural preserve, a mineral oil spill from Cherrywood Trans- former Station, a terrorism scare at the nuclear plant, and the most exciting provincial election race in the region - all in the last year. There's much ahead for you in the next three years. With details on the land swap imminent, Seaton sits teetering on the cusp of development. Another 30-year-old issue, a future federal airport, should heat up near the end of 2006 when the Greater Toronto Airports Authority makes its rec- ommendation to Ottawa. Council will also have its hands full when its controversial growth management study comes forward for consideration early next year. There's hope Pickering and a new provincial government can work together but it still remains to be seen if the Liberals will take part in the City's planning process, or push its own agenda. The verdict is still out on the oil spill and its aftermath. Pickering may have a challenge ahead of it, in convincing Hydro One to take more of a role in the community, and an even harder sell to involve the company in the City's clean- up of Frenchman's Bay. Some interesting times ahead indeed and difficult to walk away from. Thanks for the challenge and the opportunity. I'll be keeping my eye on you, Pickering. Nunavut is highest at $8.50, fol- lowed by British Co- lumbia at $8. Ontario currently sits fifth, with New Brunswick and Newfoundland/Labrad or at $6 and Alberta at $5.90. In 2000, there were 191,000 minimum wage earners in Ontario. A Whitby Chamber of Commerce official is happy the increase won’t put Ontario “out of whack” with other provinces. “We recognize the minimum wage has not gone up since 1995,” said Jim Lavelle, presi- dent of the chamber, adding that since On- tario is the largest em- ployment province, the numbers haven’t been adding up. The increase will also encourage people to get off welfare, start entry-level jobs and buy food, Mr. Lavelle said. Small businesses shouldn’t be that hard hit either, Mr. Allen said. “Generally speaking, for smaller businesses, they would not have a large workforce,” he said. “Their dollar transactions would probably not be enough to put them out of business, but it could have a negative impact on their bottom line, on the overall profit and cash flow.” Mr. Lavelle said most small- and medium- sized businesses hire specially trained and skilled employees, not minimum wage - that’s usually done by fast- food chains. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, November 23, 2003 PAGE 7 P Timbits Hockey isn’t about winning or keeping score. The deal being hashed out this week over houses being built on the Oak Ridges Moraine in Rich- mond Hill was between the Province and developers Alfred DeGasperis and Joe Lebovic. News Advertiser regrets this error. Moraine from develop- ment. The new government was unable to stop the construction of 6,600 homes in Richmond Hill, as the Liberals promised during the election. In- stead developers Alfred DeGasperis and Joe Lebovic have agreed to cut 900 housing units from their building plans on the Oak Ridges Moraine in ex- change for more lands in Seaton. Friday’s new re- lease from the Province tried to downplay the Lib- eral’s failed attempts, by pointing out 51 new acres would be set aside for a bigger and “better” Oak Ridges Moraine Heritage Park. Asked about the lo- cation of the additional lands in Seaton, Mark Christie, senior advisor of the North Pickering Land Exchange Team, said the Province is still working out those details. “Because the land ex- change won’t be finalized until at least the spring, we don’t know which lands will be included in the swap at this point,” he said. The Province also promised to consult with the City and Durham Re- gion before the deal is inked. The swap will follow regulations under the En- vironmental Assessment Act to protect any sensi- tive lands, said Mr. Christie. Given that the land deal wasn’t finalized Friday, a special council meeting to discuss the impacts of a swap has been cancelled, said Interim Mayor Bren- ner. The City has also backed off on threats to sue if a swap goes ahead without an environmental assessment. “What the Province needs to do is restore our (planning) powers by lift- ing the minister’s zoning order,” he said. The previous Tory gov- ernment issued a minis- ter’s zoning order in the spring removing Picker- ing’s powers to plan for the development of Seaton and other areas outside its urban boundary. The issue of a proper en- vironmental assessment will also be on the table when the two levels of gov- ernment do meet, said In- terim Mayor Brenner. Pickering will also push for commercial and industrial land uses in Seaton. “Residential without a job component will bank- rupt us,” he said. Mayor-elect Dave Ryan said he’s “cautiously opti- mistic” about Friday’s an- nouncement, adding “nothing should occur until Pickering, the Province and affected de- velopers have a chance for full consultation. “I’ve been speaking di- rectly with the Province and I’ve been given assur- ances from them, as mayor, and in conjunction with our new MPP, that there will be a cooperative and ongoing dialogue,” he said. The speech, Thursday, promised to up the cur- rent $6.85 to $8 over the next four years. That phase-in period is what’s keeping the impact low, said Nigel Allen, pres- ident of the Ajax-Picker- ing Board of Trade. “Without a time of ad- justment, there would be incredible cost increases,” he said. An official from the Clarington Board of Trade agreed. “I don’t believe it’ll have that strong of an impact, because it won’t be a one- time increase,” said Suzanne McCrimmon, the business development manager. If the increase was equally spread over four years, that’s only 30 cents a year, Ms. McCrimmon said. The Premier’s office was sketchy on details Thursday “We can’t give an exact time frame” on when the increase will be imple- mented, said Belinda Sut- ton, a spokesman with the Ministry of Labour. “An announcement is coming up on it.” The increase will bring Ontario into the top three minimum wage payers in Minimum wage change draws mixed feelings A/P PAGE 8 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, November 23, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Celebrate Baby’s First Christmas with loveable, jolly Santa at his Magical Toyland Castle. How your eyes met and you instinctively knew this was the one? This happened to me a few nights ago. She was a beauty with black shining hair, loving eyes and I had never seen such regal bear- ing. I was irrevocably hooked on Flana- gan, the black Labrador Seeing Eye dog, which welcomed us to The See- ing Eye in Toronto for its 75th an- niversary. And Flanagan proceeded that evening to teach us an impor- tant medical lesson that’s desperate- ly needed today. The Seeing Eye story started with an American woman, Dorothy Harri- son Eustis. She began training See- ing Eye dogs after she saw German shepherds being trained to guide blinded veterans of the First World Wa r. It takes four months to train Seeing Eye dogs. At seven weeks of age, puppies leave the breeding sta- tion to live with volunteers. Later, the formal training takes place at The Seeing Eye campus, along the streets, train station and in local businesses of Morristown and New York City. Twenty-seven days are required to teach a blind person to work with and trust his or her dog. Equally im- portant, instructors attempt to find a good personality match between the blind person and dog. One blind speaker smiled when telling her story. She explained that she enjoyed a glass of wine before her evening meal. This habit did not go unnoticed by her dog. She joked that whenever she went for a casual walk he always directed her to the liquor store! Dogs remain dogs, she added, and stressed that although her dog was very obedient, there was one problem. It was difficult to get her to go past a butcher’s store without wanting to go in. So what does Flanagan have that’s so often lacking in humans? It’s called “intelligent disobedience” and that evening Flanagan demonstrated it. She passed the test with flying colours and was applauded by an attentive audience. Following her talk, the blind speak- er directed Flanagan to lead her across the stage. But then she or- dered her to move to the front of the stage and repeated the demand “for- ward” that would have sent them falling off the stage to the floor. With- out wavering Flanagan stopped at the edge and refused to budge. She had been vigorously taught to ignore a command if it would lead to danger. Humans are supposed to be smarter than dogs! But it’s mind boggling how difficult it is to teach humans “intelligent disobedience” these days. Public health institu- tions, governments, schools and my own profession have failed miserably to teach parents and their children this trait, to say a firm “no” to a com- mand they know is a threat. What a wonderful world it would be if we could only teach humans to rely on intelligent disobedience. Peo- ple would immediately reject adver- tisements plying lethal products. Cigarette companies wouldn’t stand a chance of success. Nor would those who destroy lives by pushing illegal drugs. Even those who preach that calories don’t count. It costs $75,000 to train a Seeing Eye dog. Yet blind Canadians are only asked to pay $225. Everything else is free such as round trip airfare, the course of instruc- tion, full room and board for 27 days, the dog and equipment, and follow-up services for the life of that person. The differ- ence between the cost and fee is covered by contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations. I left the evening enamoured of these loving dogs (there were 20 present.) And ir- ritated by the frailties of so many irresponsible humans. It will be a long time before I forget Flanagan and the words “intelli- gent disobedience.” Today with an aging popula- tion and an epidemic of dia- betes, more people will suffer vi- sual loss from cataracts, macu- lar degeneration and glaucoma. It means increasing need for Seeing Eye dogs. And there’s no better life support for the blind than a loving dog that has mas- tered intelligent disobedience. And remember that provincial laws state that Seeing Eye dogs are allowed to go anywhere the rest of us go. The Southeast Collector is a critical component of the YDSS that moves wastewater from York Region to the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant located in the City of Pickering. As part of the 2002 YDSS Master Plan Update, the Regional Municipality of York has confirmed the need and conceptual feasibility of increasing capacity in sections of the YDSS Southeast Collector. The proposed increase in the Southeast Collector capacity is necessary to meet short term YDSS York Region servicing needs, as identified in the Region’s Official Plan and its current population projections. Conceptually, the Southeast Collector project involves two options. The first is to “twin” the existing Southeast Collector Trunk sewer by constructing a second trunk sewer line along the route of the present line. The second option is to build a new trunk sewer line that would follow an entirely separate route. Potential separate routes will be identified by studying all existing road, rail and/or utility corridors in the project area, which includes parts of the City of Toronto, Region of York/Town of Markham and Region of Durham/City of Pickering. The project, including preliminary recommended trunk sewer routes, was presented at two public information sessions held in early and late 2002. In response to stakeholder comments, the Region is currently completing a hydrogeological assessment of alternative trunk sewer routes. The hydrogeological assessment involves the establishment of pumping test wells along all alternative trunk sewer routes so that potential impacts to local aquifers can be more fully evaluated. A third public information session is planned for early 2004, to present the study conclusions, including the recommended Southeast Collector trunk sewer route and associated project components. This project is being undertaken in accordance with the Schedule “C” requirements of the Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class EA document (June 2000). Phase 1 (Identify the Problem) of the Class EA planning process was confirmed through the recent completion of the 2002 YDSS Master Plan Update. Comments received at the planned Public Information Session #3, and during the course of study, will be considered in the finalization of the preferred Southeast Collector trunk sewer alignment route. Following its finalization, a Class EA Environmental Study Report (ESR) will be prepared, documenting the planning process followed and conclusions reached. The public will be notified of comments received at all Public Information sessions. The public will also have the opportunity to review the ESR when it is prepared. Newspaper notices and/or direct mailings will be issued at this time to keep interested parties informed about the process. Supporting Your Community has become a whole lot easier DDUURRHHAAMM — A local charity group has joined forces with a major finan- cial organization to offer a wider host of services to the community. The new program called Support- ing Your Community allows people to use BMO Financial Group invest- ment advisers to make charitable donations to best enhance their in- vestment portfolio. Janet Georgieff, executive direc- tor of the Community Foundation of Durham Region, believes the pro- gram will make the process better for all involved. “The program covers all sectors of the community,” said Ms. Georgieff. “We will be working with citizen groups and companies, and they can establish permanent money to- ward their interests.” The minimum donation is $25,000, the principal of which will not be touched. The interest from the do- nation is used to support the type of project a client is enthusiastic about. “A client might be interested in the environment or health care, or they might want to make a general donation to be used toward any number of different programs,” she said. Recently a citizen group from the University of Ontario Institute of Te c hnology raised community funds toward a bursary program, says Ms. Georgieff. “That money will always be used for the bursary program they start- ed,” she added. Marvi Ricker, managing director of philanthropic devices at the BMO Harris Private Bank says staff can help donors think like philan- thropists. “Most people don’t decide to do- nate with tax exemptions in mind, but by having bankers and invest- ment councillors to help them think about it, they can look at the bigger picture,” she said, adding people can structure for the best tax ad- vantage, especially when using money from appreciated shares, in- heritance or sale of a business. CFDR has been around for nine years and boasts $750,000 to $780,000 in assets presently directed into 15 to 18 funds. The joint program with BMO Financial was launched Nov. 18. “We’re hoping to get a good re- sponse,” said Ms. Georgieff. “There are so many indicators of success. We c ould get just a few donors and that could have a spin-off success.” Supporting Your Community is the first project of its kind with CFDR and among a total of 28 com- munity programs participating in the first phase of the BMO Finan- cial cooperative effort. While Supporting Your Community is a joint venture, Ms. Georgieff says anyone in the community can donate to the program regardless of whom they choose to bank with. “I would suggest anyone who wants to donate to Sup- porting Your Community without using BMO Financial contact us to make arrange- ments,” she said. Marko Glavic ends prolific collegiate fo otball career on weekend PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ——A purely out- standing U.S. collegiate football career comes to an end for a Pickering native this weekend. Marko Glavic, the prolific starting quarterback with the Lafayette College Leopards of Easton, Pennsylvania, finished his collegiate career on Satur- day with a game against the arch-rival Lehigh University Mountain Hawks at Goodman Stadium in Bethlehem, Pennsyl- vania. The contest (with the result unavailable at press deadline) was significant for the Leopards' senior signal-caller in that it's his last chance to set a new Pa- triot League record as its all- time leading passer. Glavic needs just 138 yards in the air to break the mark of 9,669 passing yards set by Lehigh quarterback Phil Stambaugh. A win over Lehigh would give the Leopards a winning record. Going into Saturday's game, Lafayette owned a 5-5 mark, in- cluding a 2-4 conference record. His entire family, including fa- ther Tomo and mother Patricia, and brothers Erik and Sasha travelled to Pennsylvania to at- tend Marko's final game. The six-foot, six-inch, 225- pound pivot said at a press con- ference earlier in the week that he hasn't given much thought to his final appearance in a Lafayette uniform. "It really hasn't sunk in too much yet. It probably will when we start practising and as the week progresses and the more hype and everything that gets going around campus. It's some- thing that next week or over break will sink in and I'll realize that was my last college football game. When I look back on that game I'm hoping it's a win. That would be a great way to go out." One of four co-captains with the Leopards, Glavic is already the league's all-time record holder for total yards. He has 9,532 passing yard and 241 yards rushing for 9,773 total yards. The St. Mary Catholic Sec- ondary School graduate has broken nearly every school mark since signing on with the univer- sity. He's Lafayette's all-time leading passer, throwing for 9,357 yards, with a 55-per cent completion rate. He's also thrown 61 touchdowns passes, two short of the school record currently owned by Frank Baur. Known on campus as 'Air Canada', Glavic has thrown for 200-plus yards three times and has reached 300-plus yards three times this season. Glavic now has 26 career 200-plus yard games in 40 career starts. He has recorded five 300-yard games in his career and he threw for a new career high against Co- lumbia University (41-27 win) on Oct. 11, with 453 yards. In that game, he was involved in six touchdowns, throwing four, run- ning for one and catching anoth- er. His 453 yards of offence broke Lafayette's previous single-game record by 53 yards. Not surpris- ingly, Glavic was also selected as the Patriot League and East Coast Athletic Conference Play- er of the Week. This weekend's meeting be- tween Lehigh and Lafayette marks the 139th meeting be- tween the two football teams -- the most in collegiate football. In an interview with the News Advertiser prior to beginning his collegiate career, Glavic stat- ed he'd eventually like to play in the NFL, if the opportunity pre- sents itself, but only after his ed- ucation has been completed. He's a biology major at Lafayette. "I want to do well (in college) and get a good education. If I do well in college and the opportu- nity arises that I could be draft- ed, it would be definitely some- thing I would be hoping for," he said. ‘Air Canada’ comes in for landing Dunbarton High wins junior title BByy PPaauull FFuutthheeyy Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM ——The Sinclair Celtics senior girls' basketball team is going to OFSAA, led by an Ajax resident who could still play at the junior level a year from now. Kalisha Keane's 22 points led all scorers as Sinclair capped a per- fect season in LOSSA play with a 59-35 win over the Port Perry Rebels in the ‘AAAA’ final Wednesday at Father Leo Austin High School. Stephanie Parfitt added 14 for the Celtics, who now ad- vance to the ‘AAAA’ provin- cial champi- onships to be held in Hamilton next week. Keane, a Grade 9 student, was a threat both in close and from beyond the arc as Sinclair pulled away from an 18-18 tie with a 9-1 run to end the first half. The sec- ond half saw the Celtics pick up where they left off, grabbing some key offensive rebounds in the third quarter to help salt the game away. The former Cadarackque Pub- lic School student said the Celtics got stronger as the game pro- gressed. "We started off kind of slow but in the end we settled down," she said. While still only 14, Keane, who also plays club basketball with the Ajax Lions, said she's used to playing with girls older than she is. She won't get an argument from Port Perry coach Dennis Schilling. "What can you say?" he said when asked about Keane. "She's 14 y ears old, in Grade 9 and she possesses skills way beyond her age." As for OFSAA, Celtics co-coach Dan MacDonald said the margin of error will be slim against the provincial elite. "It's going to be a hard time," he said. "We're talking the top tough teams in the province but we've seen some of the top teams in the province and we've done okay. We just have to stick to our game plan." In the junior AAAA LOSSA final, Dunbarton overcame a 10- point half-time deficit to edge Sin- clair 45-44. Dunbarton's Kim Ban- jac, with 15, led all scorers. Meris- sa Daley (13) and Kaila Janssen (12) were leading scorers for Sin- clair. Marko Glavic will end a stellar colle- giate career with Lafayette College with a game against rival Lehigh. In order to reduce emissions, modern engines run at a higher NTP (normal operating temperature) than older engines. Thermostat: A part in cooling system, (like a gate) that is a responsible for keeping the engine running at NTP. When starting a cold engine, the thermostat will be closed. Coolant circulation to the radiator is prohibit- ed. As the engine heats up, temperature rises. As it reaches a preset value, the thermostat will start to open and let the coolant circulate to the radiator where it cools off, preventing over- heating. Simple!!! A matter of fact is thermostats have a cer- tain life time span. As they malfunction, they may open too soon and wider, resulting in a longer warm up time and not reaching NTP, or too late and narrow, resulting in overheating. In older carbureted vehicles, cold started engines needing more gas to perform, before reaching NTP is achieved by closing the air passage to the intake manifold by means of the choke. The thermostat was still needed to reg- ulate NTP. If the choke sticks closed or partial- ly closed, after the engine warms up, the engine will be sucking way more gas than it should. As a result, not all gas will be burned and combustion will be incomplete. Incomplete combustion produces lots of harm- ful emissions. Modern vehicles use electronic fuel injec- tion to control emissions ad maximize power, through the use of computers (ECM) and dif- ferent sensors and actuators. Depending on the information the ECM receives, it processes certain orders to be executed by different actu- ators. One of the very important inputs to the ECM is the engine temperature. ECM sees a colder than NTP engine and will order a richer mixture, resulting in more gas consumption and higher emissions levels. Have You Had Your Thermostat Checked Lately?
