DDUURRHHAAMM — The theme for this year’s World AIDS Day is ‘Stig- ma and Discrimination.’ The stigma attached to the disease leaves many who are in- fected abandoned by family and friends. The focus of World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, is to raise money as well as global awareness and promotion of education and ac- ceptance. Currently 38.6 million adults and 3.2 million children live with HIV/AIDS worldwide. The dis- ease has killed 25 million around the world since 1983 and every 15 seconds someone will contract the disease. In 2002, five million were infected with the virus, half of which were under the age of 25. Education, awareness and prevention is promoted on World AIDS Day annually. On Dec. 1 the AIDS Commit- tee of Durham recognizes and supports the fight to heal hu- mankind. They want Altona Forest Public School to become the third site in Durham, and the first in Pickering, to offer year-round schooling in 2004- 05. If year-round schooling garners enough support in Pickering, the program would be open to all city elementary students. The school community was looking for takers last year, but fell a little short: 104 kids were registered, 150 were needed. Supporters of the modified school year calendar are once again getting the word out, and they have a major advo- cate on their side in Jack Smyka. The former Durham District School board princi- pal introduced the modified or balanced year calendar to Winchester and C. E. Broughton public schools in Whitby. Retired, he is current- ly acting vice principal at E.B. Phin Public School in Picker- ing. “It has benefits for every- one, because it provides the flexibility for everyone and it provides choice,” Mr. Smyka says. That’s when the Province’s two-week freeze on 6,600 homes being constructed in Richmond Hill on the Oak Ridges Moraine expires. A deal with developers is ex- pected before then. But Pickering is still searching for answers as to how this week’s deal may af- fect provincially owned lands in Seaton being swapped for the privately owned lands in Richmond Hill and Uxbridge. The swap, made by the previ- ous Tory government to ap- pease the same developers now constructing homes in Richmond Hill, was never fi- nalized before the Conserva- tive government was defeat- ed Oct. 2. The Liberals vowed to stop the 6,600 homes in Richmond Hill during the election, and issued the freeze to allow for negotiations with developers, who have threatened to sue the Province if they can’t move forward. Now Pickering wants Dal- ton McGuinty to live up to its promises to be a more open government and keep the City in the loop should the Seaton land swap move for- ward. But calls this week to new Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister John Ger- ritson haven’t revealed any answers, said Interim Mayor Maurice Brenner. Durham students fall behind provincial counterparts BByy MMiikkee RRuuttaa Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM — A general down- ward trend in Grade 3 and 6 provincial test results contin- ued this year at the Durham District School Board. The board, on Monday, re- leased results of the 2002/03 Education Quality and Ac- countability Office (EQAO) assessment of reading, writ- ing and mathematics stu- dents wrote in May. For the second straight year, the percentage of Grade 3 and 6 students who met or achieved the provincial stan- dard in reading and math fell. In Grade 3 and 6 math, the figure is down 11 and six points, respectively, in two years. “These results show we are not reaching our full poten- tial,” said education director Craig Burch at Monday’s board meeting. “I believe Durham is a typical school board in the province and should be at the provincial av- erage.” He said the board “has a challenge ahead of us...to see that we do improve the re- sults.” Luigia Ayotte, the board’s programs superintendent, told trustees that there has been some improvement in the results over time, namely since the assessments began in the late 1990s. But of the six categories, the board is below the provincial average in five of them this year. “We are disappointed,” Ms. Ay otte said in an interview. “We believe that our staff have been working hard.” Oshawa Trustee Susan Shetler said she was “not happy with these results.” Outgoing Scugog Trustee Martin Demmers described the release of the results as “in a way, a sad news report.” Some trustees asked what could be done differently to improve the results. Pickering Trustee Paul Crawford won- dered if students aren’t in school enough. “A re we making a mistake shutting down for breaks? Is the summer (break) too long?” he asked. Later, Trustee Crawford questioned if the test stan- dards are too high. Ms. Ayotte said not all stu- dents have the same edge, such as special needs pupils and students who learn in dif- ferent ways, when it comes to the tests. “The standards are fine with someone who comes in with all the advantages,” she replied, later adding, “I don’t believe it’s the same for every- one.” Trustees suggested that successful schools should share their practices with other schools, and that par- ents should spend more time working with their children at home. Although the officer issues a ticket showing a fine, with easy payment options, traffic tickets have hidden penalties. Hidden Penalty Number One,Each ticket usually has demerit points, The Ministry of Transportation issues demerit points for each ticket. The Courts, or the Judge have no control of these points. If you lose nine points, the Ministry requires you to attend for an interview to suspend your licence, and at fifteen points your licence is automatical- ly suspended. If you have a G1 or G2 learners licence you can only lose six points before the Ministry will consider suspending you. Demerit points stay on your driving record for 2 years from the date of the offence. Hidden Penalty number 3,Each ticket you don’t fight or pay, goes on your record to your insurance company. Your insurance company bases your rates on what they perceive as, their risk of having to pay a claim. Many insurance companies view clients with 2 or more tickets has higher risk, and are canceling policies or raising rates into the thousands of dollars. Should you just pay a traffic ticket? Maybe, but what if your not guilty, you might have a defense to the charge, how will paying the ticket effect your insurance rates? You should never pay a ticket with- out considering the costs of doing so. A Traffic Ticket can affect your right to drive and your insurance rates. In the first such heist in Durham in recent months, a suspect walked into the Royal Bank at 1340 Kingston Rd. at 1:25 p.m. Thursday and passed a holdup note to the teller, indicating he was armed and demanding cash. The teller calmly told the robber she had no money to give him, ac- cording to Sergeant Paul Malik, spokesman for Durham Regional Police. “She told him she’d didn’t have any cash and then he responded, ‘So I’m wasting my time,’ and fled left empty-handed,” Sgt. Malik said. Police credit improved securi- ty measures as well as some stiff jail sentences for a dramatic drop in the number of bank robberies in re- cent years. “Banks have greatly improved their crime prevention, with sur- veillance cameras and central cash dispensing, and it’s paid off,” Sgt. Malik said, adding the risk of get- ting caught and going to jail just isn’t worth the pay. Durham’s robbery unit is investi- gating Thursday’s attempted holdup. Detectives are looking for a suspect described as male, white, 5- foot-10, in his early 20s, who was wearing sunglasses and a white bandanna on his head. Third man charged in connection with attack AAJJAAXX - A third Scarborough man is now charged as a result of an ongo- ing investigation into a double shooting at an Ajax restaurant in Aug ust. Two teens, 17 and 18, were shot in the legs during a dance event at Sawhil Restaurant and Banquet Fa- cilities, on Westney Road South, Aug. 29. A 20-year-old Scarborough man, an alleged shooter, was arrested nearby shortly after the incident and police recovered several firearms in the area. Detectives from 19 Division later arrested a second man in relation to the shooting and a third suspect was taken into custody on Thursday, po- lice said. Raul Anthony Sampson, 20, of Scarborough, faces eight charges in- cluding carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a loaded re- stricted firearm, possession of a gun obtained by crime and taking a gun to a public meeting. Police said a fourth arrest is ex- pected in connection with the shoot- ing. Three other people also face vari- ous charges arising from the investi- gation, including obstructing police and breach of court orders. More arrests in double-shooting Bank bandit told there’s no money, walks out durhamregion.com No one so far has stepped forward to challenge Roger Anderson BByy CCaarrllyy FFoosstteerr Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM — As the provincial and municipal elections fade to history, another vote is just gearing up: The chairman of Durham Regional Council. Currently held by Roger Ander- son, the chair’s seat is arguably the most powerful in the Region. And while every other spot on Durham council is elected - with the excep- tion of hired staff - the chairman’s spot is ap- pointed. Someone on council must nominate a chair- man-wannabe, and the candidate must then re- ceive a minimum 15 votes (or majority of council’s 28 members), said Pat Madill, the regional clerk. The spot is open to any- one of voting age. So far, no one has stepped forward to chal- lenge Mr. Anderson, who has held the seat since 1997. That year, Wayne Arthurs, the newly elected MPP for Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge, chal- lenged Mr. Anderson. In 2000, Oshawa mayor-elect John Gray challenged Mr. Anderson. Speculation on this year’s chairman chal- lengers range from recent- ly-defeated Oshawa Mayor Nancy Diamond (who could not be reached for comment), to defeated Ajax regional councillor Jim McMaster and veter- an Pickering regional councillor Rick Johnson. Coun. McMaster, still reeling from a surprise loss to Colleen Jordan, said he hadn’t thought about the top Region spot. “When you go through something like this, you let your mind go blank for a few days,” he said from his home Wednesday, adding while he hadn’t thought about running, “the day is still young.” Coun. Johnson took a few days to consider the chairman’s seat, mak- ing and receiving calls from local and regional colleagues. But in the end, his constituents won out. “I don’t think it’s fair to my com- munity,” he said late Thursday, adding if he went for regional chair and won, a by-election would have to be held in his ward. “I’ve started some projects and I want to finish them.” Those projects include widening Finch Avenue, Altona and Brock roads, he said. “If the vote had been really close, I would have thought about stepping down and letting someone else take over,” Coun. Johnson said. “But it didn’t and I will fulfil my mandate at this time. “Maybe over the next three years, but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.” Controversy has continuously sur- rounded the appointment of the re- gional councillor, to the point an ad- hoc committee was set up in March 2002 to examine the process. A mo- tion to have a Region-wide public election was shot down, but the spot was re-opened to the entire public, although the chairman’s spot is not advertised. Chairman Anderson has said a full election would only cost taxpayers’ money and open the doors to party politics. “If he or she was elected, he or she would be there to ensure his or her ideas get done,” Mr. Anderson said during the committee process last year. “Right now you have a spokesman for the Region.” The chairman’s spot will be decid- ed during regional council’s inaugur- al meeting Wednesday, Dec. 3. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, November 19, 2003 PAGE A3 A/P Highway 2 Brock RdLiverpool RdKingston Rd. A backpack containing medica- tion was stolen from a 35-year-old Oshawa man coming home from Mississauga on the GO train last Wednesday. It was taken at some point between the Pickering and Os- hawa stops, Durham Regional Po- lice report. The red backpack had clothing, a palm pilot, MP3 player and a quan- tity of prescription medication and painkillers, including Topamax, Val- ium, Pariet, Dilaudid, Celexa, Mobi- cox, Colace, Lactulose, Valproic and Halcion. On Thursday, a thief broke into a 58-year-old diabetic man’s Oshawa apartment stealing various drugs including Altace, Mobicox, Allu- dourinal, Vioxx, Metforim, Tylenol 3s, Pravastatin and blood-testing equipment. Police say the drugs can lead to serious medical problems or death if taken improperly, particularly Di- laudid and Halcion. Police are urging parents to re- mind children to stay away from any medication they find in the street or park. Please recycle He has asked the new minister to contact Picker- ing within the next day or so with a briefing. “The question still re- mains, ‘Which lands are they swapping?’” he said at Monday’s council meet- ing. “Earlier today, I tried to get information but was told, we would be told when the government makes its announcement. “As host municipality, we have felt all along the land swap must be trans- parent and it must include the City of Pickering. We are the host community, in which planning (for Seaton) must involve us.” Interim Mayor Brenner pointed to the order is- sued by the Tory govern- ment last spring, which re- moved Pickering’s power to plan for the develop- ment of Seaton and other areas outside the City’s urban boundaries, in ef- fect, removing council’s ability to plan for the City’s future. He reminded council the City passed a resolu- tion in September, that should the Province move forward with a land swap without lifting the order and without out doing a proper environmental as- sessment beforehand, its lawyers are authorized to take legal action against the provincial govern- ment. But Pickering’s mayor-elect Dave Ryan, who is Ward 1 City coun- cillor until being sworn in Dec. 1, questioned the in- terim mayor’s approach. “I think it’s really unfor- tunate the first action be- tween this council and the new government will be worded so strongly. I would want to be perhaps a little more diplomatic,” he said. Coun. Ryan said, al- though he agreed with the objective, he didn’t think the City should be threat- ening litigation when Pickering is still unsure what will be the outcome of this week’s deal. “We have to carefully navigate this,” added Wa rd 2 Regional Council- lor Mark Holland. “What the announcement on Thursday should be is a full and open sharing of ideas. If it’s not, we’ll have to work quickly.” Pickering should still be hopeful the Liberals will take a different tack than their predecessors, he said. If co-operation isn’t possible, the City will have to consider “other mea- sures”, he said. Litigation should be seen as a last resort, Coun. Holland pointed out. Interim Mayor Brenner said afterwards, he agreed the City shouldn’t be con- frontational from the start with the new ministry. “But they still have to put their hand out to work with us,” he said. “Still, I think out of courtesy they could have put a call in to Pickering about this. Interim Mayor Brenner said he acknowledges it may take time for the Province to reverse the minister’s zoning order for Seaton, but there needs to be some discussion now about the need for an en- vironmental assessment before the land swap takes place. The Province’s new plan propos- es two communities - an urban community with a population of 70,000 to 90,000 on the east side of the creek (Seaton), and an agricultural community of about 4,200 hectares on the west side of the creek 11997744 The Region of Durham is ini- tiated, along with an Official Plan, that designated Seaton ‘North Pickering Urban Area’ and the agricultural lands ‘Special Study Area’. 11998888 aanndd 11998899 The Province commissioned the preparation of a detailed community plan for Seaton but no action was taken to implement it. The North Pickering Land Ex- change Review Panel, led by David Crombie, is charged with formulating a set of principles for the swap. FFeebbrruuaarryy 22000022 Pickering initiates a growth management study to examine future growth pressures. The City includes the agricul- tural preserve, along with Seaton and the Lam- oureaux neighbourhood in the study area. Council puts an interim control freeze on the area until the study is complete. SSeepptteemmbbeerr 22000022 The Crombie panel begins public consultation. Prin- ciple Six, which states the Duffin-Rouge Agricultural Preserve should be kept for agricultural uses in perpetuity, gets the ap- plause of environmental groups but is unpopular with some farmers on the preserve. LLaattee 22000022 Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Chris Hodgson accepts the Crombie panel’s recom- mendations, including Principle Six. The City moves forward with its growth management study. LLaattee MMaarrcchh 22000033 More than 1,000 trees are cut down on the pre- serve. The City later presses charges but the cutting prompts local MPP Janet Ecker to con- vince new municipal af- fairs minister David Young to issue two zoning or- ders for north Pickering. The first order puts the entire preserve off-limits to developers. The sec- ond order establishes provincial control over planning and development for the entire growth management study area, taking it out of the hands of the City of Pickering. SSuummmmeerr 22000033 Pickering continues on with its growth manage- ment study. The pre- ferred option of its con- sultants calls for develop- ment of both Seaton and 30 per cent of the agri- cultural preserve. The study, now in its third and f inal phase, still awaits council’s approval. FFaallll 22000033 Pickering mayor Wayne Arthurs wins the provin- cial seat away from Ms. Ecker. Soon after, the Lib- erals are called to deliver on their promise to stop the development of 6,600 homes in Richmond Hill. A two-week freeze on the development ex- pires Thursday, with a deal expected between the Province and devel- opers beforehand, the same developers involved in the Seaton land swap. Seaton in review ✦ City from page A1 MMAAUURRIICCEE BBRREENNNNEERR Wants the new minister to contact City before Thursday days are more evenly spread out over the year. In a sample calendar, stu- dents have July off but start school in August. They get holidays in Octo- ber, share the same Christmas holi- day with students on the regular cal- endar, and have a holiday in October, a two-week March break and a week off in May. Mr. Smyka spoke to Pick- ering parents about the benefits of the modified, or balanced, calendar this week at Altona Forest. For pri- mary students learning to read, ninea weeks off in the summer is a long time to be away from school, he points out, and there’s a lot of catch- ing up to be done come September. Special-needs students crave routine and the summer break doesn’t bene- fit them either. With a balanced cal- endar, Mr. Smyka says, “the energy level is much higher” for students and teachers, who can go full tilt knowing that a break isn’t too far off. Conversely, in the regular year, from January to June there’s just a one- week holiday if you don’t include Easter holidays and the May long weekend. By the end of the year, teachers and students are fatigued. “We had a very interested group of people with lots of questions,” said Altona Forest principal Heather Stu- art, noting representatives from E.B. Phin and Frenchman’s Bay public schools were in attendance. She said one difficulty for parents interested in the program is that busing would not be provided. Altona Forest is hosting a registra- tion session for Pickering parents on Nov. 29 from 9 a.m. to noon at the school, 405 Woodsmere Cres., near the Rosebank Road-Stroud’s Lane intersection. Parents wanting to learn more about the modified calen- dar year can call Altona Forest school at 905-839-9900. been exposed to pathogens because of equipment that wasn’t sterilized properly. “Clearly, hospitals need to do a much better job of infection control. The issues are very complex and we need to stay on top of it,” Mr. Mar- tin says. “Having said that, we did a complete review at Ajax and Pick- ering of our infection control and procedures. We did it before their (the provincial) call.” Regional health officials were in- vited to the Ajax-Pickering hospital to inspect the procedures followed by the hospital, Mr. Martin adds. “They gave us a clean bill of health,” he states. Health Minister George Smither- man said in a press release, “We ex- pect hospitals to maintain the safest possible infection control standards and to be more vigilant about the sterilization of equip- ment.” He said that after hearing about the situation at Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Sciences Centre last week, he ordered all hospitals “to thoroughly examine their current practices and report back to us.” Hospitals will have to report to the ministry by Jan. 9 on: • Ability to comply with policies and procedures on the sterilization of equipment and facilities; • Ability of infection control com- mittees and specialists to ensure that all infection control standards are met and that accountability measures are in place; • How infectious disease standards are communicated to staff and how they’re monitored. The audit is to cover infection control practices in all clinical, di- agnostic and supply areas. Mr. Martin says the inspection with Regional officials was a “fol- low-up” to a similar visit two years ago. In 2001, Toronto Public Health of- f icials did a similar visit at the RVHS Centenary site. The aim of the audits is to ensure a “safe envi- ronment,” Mr. Martin adds. “We ex- ceeded all public standards.” The Public Hospitals Act re- quires infection control measures are in place, Mr. Martin says. “How it’s done is left up to an in- fection control committee,” he says, adding the committee “oversees in- fection control and practices and audits.” The committee oversees infection control at both Ajax-Pickering and Centenary and “we follow its direc- tion.” Mr. Martin says there are ‘indus- try’ standards to be followed for in- fection control and sterilization. Also, “each piece of equipment comes with it’s own instruction,” he states. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, November 19, 2003 PAGE A5 P Comfort begins with peace of mind. A week or so ago, I had taken my car into a local self-serve car wash. It's a dinky little place, just a few cin- derblock stalls, soap, wax, and rinse. Certainly not as high- tech as some of these new places where your car can get everything from a protective oil spray to what amounts to an automotive high colonic. But it's on my commute and it's handy. I've never had a problem there at all, but on this visit, the coin machine ate my toonie. I was ticked of course. Nobody likes to lose money for nothing. I noticed though, as I was about to drive away in my still dirty car, that tacked to the outside of the building there was a faded handwritten sign over a rusty mailbox. It said, if you have a problem, to leave your name, address and nature of the problem on a note and stick it in there. Thinking, 'Right, I'll never see that money again‚' I jotted the information down on a business card and tucked it into the slot. Wonder of wonders, a few days later I received a hand- written note from the operator of the car wash. He forwarded a sincere apology and my toonie. Not coupons for a free wash mind you, but my actual toonie. I was floored. It probably cost this guy more in time and postage than that toonie was worth. But, this guy under- stood the inestimable value of customer service. As a result, I will go back to that car wash. I will tell my friends to go to that car wash. I may even wash my kids at that car wash. All because of that one simple gesture of good faith. The more I thought about this the more I wondered how other parts of life might benefit from good customer service. What about dating? How many times have people been out on dates that, for one reason or another, just didn't work out? Wouldn't it have been nice, a couple of days later to have re- ceived a little note in the mail saying something like 'Dear John. Sorry we didn't click. Al- though in my defence I have to tell you I've never once been car sick before. Here's a cheque for the money you spent on dinner and the movie, plus the dry- cleaning bill for your trousers. I hope you consider me for your dating needs in the future. Have a great day. Edna.' Wouldn't that be fabulous? A note like that just might get Edna a second kick at the can: at the very least a healthy re- ferral to other interested par- ties. Her dating stock would soar. No anger, no recrimina- tions, just good business. Even couples who have been married for years could benefit from this kind of service. How about slipping this under an angry spouses pillow: 'Dear valued wife. My records indicate that I have missed an anniversary. Although rigorous standards are in place to pre- vent just this sort of thing from happening, occasionally errors are made. As a loyal customer, I would like to take this time to make a special offer to you and only you in return for your pa- tience and understanding. How about trading in that old cold shoulder for a nice warm mink coat? Please act now however, as this is a limited time offer.' I like it. On the surface they seem like an average family dealing with the challenges of everyday life, but, there's a big difference - Mr. Conners is living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), known as Lou Gehrig's Dis- ease. It would have been easy for Mr. Conners to give up more than two years ago when his wife Liz was killed in a tube ski accident. He was already living in a long- term care facility in Whitby after his wife and two boys couldn't handle the overwhelming workload that comes with an ALS patient. Mr. Conners knew his terminal illness would extract its toll on him and it has. He could have stayed in the Whitby facility but he decided his children needed him at home. He cares for his sons, but he does so with the help of two caregivers, who get him to appointments and communicate with others. Mr. Conners uses his eyebrows to convey his feelings with his children and still has the ability to laugh and smile. He also uses a computer and special head mouse, which lets him talk with his boys. "He rules with an iron mouse," says long-time family friend Paula Ferry-Wineck. Even though his body is giving out on him, Mr. Con- ners won't give up on his children. He has opened a Mennonite meat shop in Whitby called Acres of Bless- ings at 121 Brock St. The business and its proceeds will be held in trust to assist in raising the boys once Mr. Conners passes away. ALS is costly and not just at the bank. The disease takes its toll on the body and emotions. This is a dis- ease that kills more than 90 per cent of victims within the first five years of being diagnosed. It's miserable for the nearly 2,000 Canadians living with ALS. The ALS Society of Canada is currently researching a cure for the disease but it's an expensive proposition. This month when you're trying to decide where to send some of your extra money, why not give it to the ALS Society of Canada? People like Mr. Conners and his family would appreciate it this Christmas. They won’t pout Megan Fleming, 6, and her brother Ryan, 2, were enjoying a curbside seat at the Santa Claus Parade in Pickering this past weekend when their picture was snapped by photographer Mike Pochwat. Faith restored for a toonie Hospital Auxiliary is there to serve TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: Due to current controversy which exists in our community relating to the Ajax Pickering Health Centre we wish to draw your attention to the contribu- tion made by the Hospital Aux- iliary since its inception in No- vember 1951. The Auxiliary is comprised of approximately 230 working and retired ladies and gentlemen from all walks of life and range in age from 19 to 90. This does not include our student volun- teers. Our dedicated volunteers work in a number of areas in- cluding our gift and coffee shops, HELPP Lottery, library cart, information desk, emer- gency, fracture clinic and day surgery to name only a few. We also have a 'nearly new' 4477 Shop located in Pickering Vil- lage. In addition to the funds raised in our shops we hold var- ious raffles, bingo and a card night to raise funds. We support six local high schools and our own student volunteers by offering bursaries and awards to selected students entering the medical field. This year 20 bursaries/awards to- talling $10,000 were presented to deserving students. These funds are raised by sales in our 4477 Shop from do- nated items. During the past 42 years $135,000 has been present- ed for this very worthwhile pro- gram. In 1999 the Auxiliary pledged $500,000 towards the purchase price of the CT scanner ($1.2 M), and completed this pledge in 2002. We were then asked to pledge an additional $500,000 for the outstanding balance, bringing our total commitment to this project to $1,000,000. Included in our volunteers is a group of ladies and one gentle- man who knit baby wear, bootees and toques. Since the mid fifties most babies born in our hospital have received a hand-knit pair of bootees or a toque compliments of the Auxil- iary. Christmas babies are pre- sented with red pajamas and white bonnets. As well every pa- tient in the hospital on Christ- mas Eve receives a small gift compliments of the Auxiliary. Patients in our hospital will find tray favours on their dinner trays on Christmas and other special days, also compliments of the Auxiliary. In total the Auxiliary has given in excess of $3.5 million in support of our hospital. Add to this the thousands and thou- sands of hours of volunteer ser- vice given to the hospital in sup- port of our community. Please note that the Auxiliary does not have any paid person- nel, all of our volunteers give freely of their time and talents to support our hospital. The above is a brief summary of the many ways the Auxiliary supports our local hospital both financially and with in-service programs. We have the utmost confidence in our membership and hope the community will continue to provide their sup- port either financially or by be- coming a member of the Auxil- iary and offering their time and talents. The board’s job is to help make it a level playing field for all students, says Ms. Ayotte. With money and re- sources, schools can improve, and the results at Glen Street Public School indicate that, she says. The south Oshawa school was one of 16 across the province that shared provincial funding, announced two years ago, to improve student literacy skills in JK to Grade 3. At each school, two-thirds or more of Grade 3 students failed to meet the provincial standard on the EQAO tests between 1998 and 2000. This is the final year of the project, and Glen Street’s test scores show a marked improvement. On the 2001/02 EQAO assessment, five, 16 and five per cent of students met the stan- dard in reading, writing and math, respectively. This year’s results are 39 per cent in reading, 42 per cent in writing, and 33 per cent in math meeting the standard. “I was very surprised to see how much the (Glen Street) marks had come up,” noted Oshawa Trustee Kathleen Hopper. Province-wide, the Grade 3 and 6 numbers show there has been little change in recent years compared to the early years of the assessments. In the first three years, the percentage of Grade 3 and 6 students achieving or doing better than the standard rose by an average of seven percent- age points in each category. In the last three, the percentages have not moved. On the Grade 3 assessment, the percentage in math went up 13 percentage points from the first to the second test. It has dropped four points over the last three assess- ments. DURHAM - The following chart shows the percentage of students at each school that performed at or above the provincial standard of Level 3, or a ‘B,’ on Education Quality and Accountability Office tests written last May. Area hosts OFSAA boys’ volleyball event Durham Region represented by Sinclair, Pine Ridge at ‘AAAA’ provincial showcase BByy PPaauull FFuutthheeyy Staff Writer DDUURRHH AAMM —— If this weekend's OFSAA AAAA boys' volleyball tournament comes down to experi- ence, the Sinclair Secondary School Celtics are a definite title contender. The Celtics, who successfully de- fended their LOSSA (Lake On- tario Secondary Schools Athletics) title to advance to the provincial championships, learned Monday they are seeded second in the 20- team tournament. Action kicks off at J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate and Notre Dame in Ajax Friday with Sinclair and LOSSA runner- up Pine Ridge in action. "It was a little higher than we were expecting," said Sinclair's head coach Christine Hathaway of the pre-tournament ranking. "So we're quite excited about that." As such, the Celtics' preseason goal of a top five finish remains on the radar screen. Last year, Sin- clair placed 10th overall at OFSAA. Many on the current edi- tion of the Celtics were on that team, which lost only two starters to g raduation. "We were a very young team going into OFSAA last year," Hath- away recalled. "One of the benefits this year is that we're going to have more experience." Agreeing the team may have been a little overwhelmed against the top competition in the province in 2002, Chris Graham, this year's team captain, said there were lessons to be learned. "We need to be more focused, that's for sure," said the Grade 12 student. Graham, in his third year on the team, said the Celtics must take each opponent seriously. While London's Saunders Secondary School (1) and Oakridge Sec- ondary School (3) along with An- caster High School (4) join the Celtics as the top four ranked teams, Sinclair can't afford to let its guard down against any oppo- nent, regardless of its seeding, he said. "You've got to go into every game thinking that it's going to be the toughest game of your life," he said. So far this season, Sinclair has been the toughest game for many of its opponents. The Celtics' vet- eran-laden squad has won 83 of 92 sets in league and tournament play. One of those opponents was Pine Ridge. The 13th seed is head- ing into the tournament buoyed by its performance in the LOSSA fi- nals against Sinclair, particularly in the closely fought first set. Jen Bogart, the team's assistant coach, said if Pine Ridge is able to dictate the play and get a strong attacking game going, it is going to be successful. "We can see they have what it takes," she said of the squad, giv- ing an assessment she shares with head coach Andrew Lue. "When they're all confident, and they're all working together, the team works very well together." Sinclair plays all four of its divi- sion games on Friday. The Celtics open against Middlefield Colle- g iate (Markham) at 10:30 a.m. then play at 1:30 p.m. against R. H. King Academy (Toronto), 4:30 p.m. against Lieberman (Toronto), and wrap up divisional play at 7:30 p.m. against Centennial Collegiate (Guelph). Pine Ridge starts its Friday ac- tion at 10:30 a.m. against Waterloo, then plays 1:30 p.m. versus Ancast- er, and 7:30 p.m. against Jarvis (Toronto). The Pumas finish their divisional matchups with a 9:15 a.m. Saturday game against Gloucester. The gold medal game is at 7 p.m. Saturday. www.magwyerspub.com Sat., Nov. 22 J.D. Panthers bounce back Pickering juniors split games on weekend BByy AAll RRiivveetttt Sports Editor PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG —— Pickering Boyer Pontiac Panthers' head coach John Winder is breathing a little easier after his club responded with two decent weekend efforts after a totally deflat- ing experience on the ice last week. The Pickering juniors (7- 11 -7-0 for 21 points, seventh in South Conference) scored a 5-2 victory over the Oshawa Legionaires (10-13-3-0 for 23 points, sixth in South Conference) in OHA Ontario Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey League action at the Pickering Recreation Complex on Friday night. On Sunday in Ajax, the Panthers put in the effort, but the scoring touch completely aban- doned them in a 4-1 loss to the last-placed Ajax Axe- men (5-17-1-2 for 13 points, ninth in South Confer- ence). The Panthers entered the weekend on a rather low note, coming off a dis- appointing and confidence- crushing 8-7 loss to the vis- iting Markham Waxers at the Pickering Recreation Complex last Wednesday night. The game was arguably the lowest point for the Panthers so far this season, stemming from the Pan- thers owning a 6-1 lead that inexplicably vanished. Fighters earn medals at provincials AAJJAAXX —— Three Ajax Boxing Club fighters returned with medals from the provincial championships for amateur boxing in St. Catharines recently. The Ajax club sent three senior fighters -- Scott Morgan, Lynette McLaughlin and Omar Sulaman, all of Pickering -- to the Arnie Boehm Novice Ontario Championship Tournament in St. Catharines. Mo rgan and Sulaman earned gold medals in their respective weight classes; McLaugh- lin, the first female boxer in the history of the Ajax club, fought to a silver medal. Morgan defeated Doug Barnard of Goderich Boxing Club in the gold-medal match in the novice 64-kilogram class. The referee stopped the contest in the sec- ond round when Barnard was unable to re- spond to Morgan's constant assault. Mo rgan's next fight is being scheduled for Dec. 7 at Oshawa's Motor City Boxing Club Show at LeScratch Billiards in that city. Sulaman won the gold medal in the sub- novice division in the 69-kilogram category. Entering the rink against Anthony Johnson of the Bland's Boxing Club, Sulaman took the fight to his opponent, scoring 14 solid punches in the first round, with almost no response from Johnson. After the first round, Johnson walked to his corner but refused to come out to contin- ue the fight. His corner man threw in the towel to stop the contest. Sulaman won his first bout against Geoff Black of the Napper's Boxing Club. The Ajax boxer knocked down Black twice with devas- tating power shots. After a third eight-count, the referee stopped the contest in the third round. Sulaman is now in the process of schedul- ing a bout against the 69-kg provincial cham- pion in the novice division planned for the Motor City Boxing Club Show on Dec. 7. Meanwhile, McLaughlin lost in a close bout against Joyce Findlay of HUF Executive Boxing Club in the gold-medal match in the novice 66-kilogram category. She's also slated to fight in the Motor City Boxing Club card on Dec. 7. The Ajax Boxing Club is headed up by head coach Brad Gonsalves and technical coaches Boyle Farrel, Bob Foxton and Mar- cus Price. The strength and conditioning coaches are Masood Raza amd Blair Lafor- tune. Anyone interested in joining the Ajax Boxing Club can contact Raza at 416-804- 4850. Area boxers ring up gold ✦ Please see Panthers, B2 Celia Klemenz/ News Advertiser photo Ajax Boxing Club fighters Scott Morgan, left, and Omar Sulaman returned with gold medals from the recent Arnie Boehm Novice Ontario Championships in St. Catharines. One other boxer, Lynnette McLaughlin (absent for photo) won silver. the coffin in a complete and utter col- lapse by the Panthers. "I've never been involved as a coach or a player in a game like that where we've been up 6-1 and came out on the short end," noted Winder. "It was a very empty feeling. I felt like it was something I had no control over once the game was over." The Panthers' next practice was marked by a film session where the contents of Wednesday's game were dissected. And, heading into the weekend, the debacle was put to rest. "We didn't want to dwell too much on it, there's no point," says Winder. "I think we rebounded big time from it. It was something that happened. That's what is wonderful about hock- ey -- the unexpected can happen." Playing their third game of the sea- son against a rejuvenated and injury- free Ajax Axemen squad, the Pan- thers put forth a consistent effort, but couldn't beat Ajax netminder Ken Grad on the afternoon. "I wasn't unhappy with the way we played. We just didn't bury our chances and they did. That was the difference," says Winder. Despite the loss, the Panthers still lead the six-game season series be- tween the neighbouring junior 'A' clubs. The Pickering juniors defeated the Axemen in their previous two meetings. Panthers' leading scorer Andrew Dissanayake (nine goals, 15 assists for 24 points) scored the lone goal for Pickering against Ajax. In their first game after W ednesday's crushing loss to Markham, the Panthers put it all together against the Os- hawa Legion- aires. Most im- portantly, the ef- fort was there for the entire game, with no chance of a re- peat perfor- mance occur- ring. "I was happy with my players, they didn't let down and kept up their hard work long enough to win the game," ex- plains Winder. The Panthers carried a 2-1 lead into the third pe- riod, scoring three more times in the final stanza to put the victory on ice. Clay Costoff led the Panthers with a goal and two assists against Oshawa. Kyle Robinson added a goal and an assist. The Panthers and Axemen meet again Fri- day night at the Pickering Recre- ation Complex 7:30 p.m. On Sunday after- noon, the Pan- thers are in Nor th York for a matinee meeting (2:30 p.m.) against the Rangers.
