The schools received what amounts to a multi- million-dollar technology investment Sept. 23, in- volving network equip- ment and services from IBM Canada, Bell Canada and Nortel Networks. The university’s two- storey south wing learning commons was the location for a demonstration of how the three corpora- tions working with the schools, will enable stu- dents to use their laptop computers in ways not previously possible. Three weeks after UOIT’s opening, Karen McGaffey says her choice to attend the local univer- sity was clinched because the new school offers a laptop-based learning en- vironment. “I could live at home in Durham Region as I at- tended school,” said the education student. “UOIT seemed like a perfect fit... It really is great to have a wireless laptop.” Through the technology provided by IBM, Nortel and Bell - valued at $100 million - students are able to make computer-based presentations, conduct re- search, communicate with faculty and access course materials. The college and university students have access to test and assign- ment results, as well as lecture notes and sample spreadsheets. The net- work also allows for the use of e-mail, Web sites, online discussion groups and chat forums to collab- orate with peers, faculty and experts in their area of study. “You guys are helping ensure the latest in tech- nology and software,” of- fered student association vice-president Tom Coughlan to Nortel, Bell and IBM representatives. “On behalf of all current and future students, I would like to thank you.” The learning commons is equipped with 154 desk- top computers, and has space for the students to use their college/university laptops. Another 11 class- rooms are each fully net- worked and equipped with presentation equipment. The technology collabo- ration announced Tues- day makes UOIT and Durham College the first schools of their kind for wireless learning in On- tario and the second such location in Canada. That’s right, it’s the client who chose hypnosis, Marc Merlis, who is now exactly 8 lbs. away from his goal. Dateline put the major diet plans to the test with six members of the Class of 1978. Each participant wanted to lose weight before their 25th high school reunion. Like thousands of Positive Changes clients, Bakery Chef Mark Merlis found that hypnosis made all the difference. Dateline reports,“As for the hypno- tized baker, things couldn’t be bet- ter. By April he had lost almost five inches off his waist. And look who else caught the fever. His wife went to the hypnotist to quit smok- ing. And guess what? She says she no longer has the desire to smoke. Smoke free, fat free, the Merlis’s are flying…” More and more former dieters are turning to hypnotists and, like Marc, are discovering that it’s more effective than the leading weight loss shake, safer than a bacon cheeseburger protein diet, less painful than training for a marathon, and doesn’t involve counting points, calories, or a yo-yo diet. We will never forget. Durham Re- gion, Ontario, Canada.” Renderings of the bricks the eight municipalities in Durham purchased were also on display. Despite its official open- ing in June this year, the Juno Beach Centre still needs funds, Mr. Anderson said. So the Region is chal- lenging every municipality in Canada to purchase a brick. “The Juno Beach centre was a realization of a dream for our veterans...(it was) built by all of us,” he said. Buying a brick will “let the memory of those who served us live forever.” D-Day veteran and Pick- ering resident Jan de Vries of the Canadian Parachute Battalion brought the crowd back to 1944 France while telling of bursting bombs and stepping over dead comrades. “Those of us who sur- vived must not let the fu- ture generations forget that their freedom did not come cheaply,” he said. On June 6, 1944 - now known as D-Day - thou- sands of Canadian soldiers raided Juno Beach and helped to liberate France. Sears Canada Inc. Pickering Town Centre Direct Line 420-0271 Tribute to a fallen firefighter BByy LLeesslleeyy BBoovviiee Staff Writer PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG —To say it’s been an emo- tional week for Barbara Zents would be an understatement. Her husband, Ray was one of 77 firefighters, who died in the line of duty this year, honoured at an Inter- national Fire Fighters Association (IAFF) memorial in Colorado last weekend. On Thursday, Pickering Fire Ser- vices presented the family with Mr. Zents medal of honour on behalf of the IAFF. “It was the final honour that was given to my husband and it was done exquisitely,” Mrs. Zents said. The 52-year-old firefighter died in February of leukemia. The Workplace Insurance Bureau ruled his leukemia an occupational illness, which is treated by the IAFF as a line of duty death. His passing marks the first line of duty death for Pickering Fire Services, said Deputy Chief Mark Diotte, who worked the same shift with Mr. Zents for a number of years. “He was a really good friend,” he said. “He was tough on the outside but soft on the inside.” Born in Ohio, Mr. Zents served five years in the United States as a fire fighter before moving to Canada with his family and taking up residence in Kinsale. He served as a volunteer firefighter in Pickering for a number of years until joining the department full- time in November of 1980. “He had a great concern for indi- viduals,” said Mrs. Zents, pointing to an old news photo she recently found of him. “He’s leaning over a stretcher, belting out orders. That was just like him. He was a take charge kind of guy and well-respected.” It was through a trip to the dentist a little more than a year before that it was discovered something was not quite right with Mr. Zent’s blood work. Doctors later diagnosed him with a precursor to leukemia, and it was suggested he undergo a bone marrow transplant to help prevent the disease from developing. He went through the procedure but wasn’t able to escape the leukemia. After a few months of chemotherapy treatments at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toron- to, the firefighter succumbed to the illness on Feb. 8. Pickering Fire Ser- vices provided an honour guard for the funeral and both the American and Canadian flags were draped on his casket. Last weekend’s memorial in Col- orado was just as touching, said Mrs. Zents, to see her husband’s name added to a wall commemorating fire- fighters, who have fallen over the years. “Everything the IAFF could do to make us feel comfortable was done. Any need was taken care of,” she added. The two met at a cottage near Kingston and were married for 30 years. Their two sons, Jerry, 26 and Brian, 23, were her husband’s pride and joy, said Mrs. Zents. “We were a happily ever after cou- ple, absolutely in love,” she added. “If you look at our wedding picture today, you can still see the sparkle in our eyes. It was an honour to be his wife, in a nutshell.” Final honour Barbara Zents’s husband Ray was one of 77 firefighters honoured at the International Fire Fighters Association memorial in Colorado last weekend. Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, September 28, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Silly bylaws get ignored 40-km standard is irresponsible We have all driven through an area where speed limits have been lowered beyond what common sense dic- tates is sensible. Invariably what happens is some motorists abide by, or at least closely follow, the limit while others determine it is ridicu- lous and go the speed they deem to be reasonable. End result, a more dangerous roadway where impatient drivers are trying to dodge those following the posted limits. That’s the danger of a blanket bylaw like the one passed by Pickering council last week. It will change all limits on the City's collector roads, such as Altona Road, and parts of Finch Avenue and Rosebank Road, as well as residential streets, to 40 km. The bylaw flies in the face of recommendations from the Re- gion of Durham and even the City's own staff. The issue was raised back in June by Councillor Dave Ryan who asked staff to investigate the possibility of a speed limit reduction across Pickering similar to the 40 km limit placed on residential roads in south Pickering. City staff came back with a report that said enacting this bylaw would "basically ignore" council's own process for safer street traffic management. As well, the report said City engineering staff agree with the Region of Durham's works commissioner, who suggests the bylaw would be costly and could actually reduce road safety. The City staff concerns include a $25,000 price tag just for the signs and posts alone, not even considering staff time to change them; concerns about the implications of "arbitrary and inef- fective lowering of speed limits" including the inability to en- force those new limits; and an increased human resource de- mand on municipal staff and police by residents looking for vig- ilance when motorists fail to regard the new lower limit. On the top of every motorists mind, once the bylaw is enact- ed, will be the aggravation of getting around a city where every collector road and residential road is treated like a school zone. Where is the precedent for this? Perhaps Councillor Bill McLean who supported the motion has seen this done in other municipalities and can attest to its effectiveness but that is not the argument he put forward. Instead, he said, "Laws are made by council. It's not up to police to pick and choose what laws they are going to enforce." True enough but perhaps the police may have valuable insight council could benefit from before it makes an uninformed decision. Councillor Rick Johnson was the voice of reason when he said lowering the limit on some roads makes sense but for others it does not. He asked council to wait until Durham Police could be consulted. It's too bad they didn't listen. Sober second thought seems to be exactly what this bylaw required and councillors must reconsider while there is still time. B&W inspection not at arms’ length TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: RE: Safety Concerns levelled at OPG, Wednesday, Sept. 10: Babcock & Wilcox (B&W)is involved in the refurbishment of the plant at Pickering. One such activity is the up- grading of the steam boilers (boiler cleaning). This work requires a signifi- cant amount of inspection to be under- taken. If the Inspection Services Division (ISD) is being bought by a consortium which includes B&W then the indepen- dence of ISD is jeopardized and puts B&W in a conflict of interest position. This is no different from the position of OPG currently inspecting themselves. So what does really change by selling ISD? Is Janet Ecker trying to convince the public that selling ISD is in the best in- terest of the community? Just as the current government did by fracturing OPG in an effort to privatize, which ulti- mately led to the recent power black- out, costing Ontario millions of dollars. This government blunder is now being touted as Ernie Eves providing leader- ship during the black-out! The government leadership appears to want to sell the taxpayers assets to achieve a short-term gain in order to make the accounting look good. In the long term, the taxpayer will be paying the price while private interests cream our coffers in the process of lining their own pockets. I suppose this can be chalked down to providing leadership! Does Ontario Power Generation equal Ontario Hydro? It's a question OPG has worked long and hard to avoid. But, the re- cent announcement, made during a provincial election, leaves one wondering if old habits die hard. OPG plans to sell its Inspection Services Divisions (ISD) to a con- sortium of three companies, one of which is Babcock and Wilcox Cana- da, an arm of the giant American company that was involved in the Three Mile Island nuclear accident. The optics aren't good. Perhaps there are sound business reasons for the sale. But the timing and how the matter came to light -- re- leased by the Liberal Party during the election -- don’t help. OPG cer- tainly was caught off guard and has been playing catch-up since. And, quite frankly, is losing the game. The company, to the best of my knowledge, still hasn't said why selling the ISD is good, why the public shouldn't be concerned, and what's the benefit of this sale. The question arises of when was the company going to announce it? OPG said earlier this year it was considering the sale, but nothing since. With all things nuclear, safe- ty is a concern. How safe will it be to have outside contractors in- volved in nuclear inspections? What happens after they've done their work and filed a report? What if someone with OPG disagrees with the report? What will be for- warded to the nuclear regulator? The most ringing comment made at the Community Advisory Committee meeting last week came from member Paul White, who said it seemed like the old On- tario Hydro was at it again. The sale “may not be major to the key players at OPG, but it is to the peo- ple in this community," Mr. White added. In 1997, the former Ontario Hydro was raked over coals for its performance in an independent as- sessment. The report led the Province to break up Ontario Hydro into three companies, one being OPG. The hope was a new look would bring a new attitude. With the old Ontario Hydro, the company's response to selling the ISD would have been to tell every- one things are OK, what's the worry, leave everything to us be- cause we're the experts and you're not. That was the kind of thinking that led the utility into the mess it was. A blend of art and science that enables your skilled professional to achieve a sensational affect. Average cost of procelain veneers is $550 to $650 each. While the cost of crowns is slightly higher, the crowns are required when teeth either have lost signif icant structure or when the tooth required root canal treatment. Porcelain fused to metal crowns offer superior strength while all porcelain crowns add more cosmetic appeal. Average cost of a crown is $800 to $900. These stressors include everything from hay fever, job and family stress, poor diet, and bad digestion, just to name a few. Your body is a conglomeration of cells, and there is a scientif ically proven method to measure the health of your cells, it is called the Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). The BIA can accurately measure the health of the membrane of all your cells. This reading provides a prediction of outcome, as high readings are associated with intact cell membranes and good health, whereas, low readings are associated with cell breakdown and the death of cells. Everyone should strive to improve their health on the cellular level. With a proper health assessment, improvements to the cellular level can be accomplished through dietary habits, lifestyle and exercise, cleaning and detoxification. The BIA also provides information on the nutrition and hydration status inside the cells and a very accurate measurement of body fat. With this generated information, a person can come to an understanding of their health picture and what they need to do to come to improve. The BIA can be used to monitor your progress to insure that you are achieving good results. Other services may be utilized together with a cellular analysis to help complete the health assessment. Those services would include a 220-foot test to expose food sensitivities, and a hair analysis to determine deficiencies of nutritional elements, or the presence of toxic elements. This column is the first in a series of three that are being written to inform people about the art and science of this fascinating subject. Hypnosis was used by a number of ancient civilizations dating as far back as about 3000 B.C. Proof of this exists in hieroglyphics found in Egypt. However, it wasn’t until the mid to late 1700’s that it became widely known in Europe through the work of a German physician named Franz Anton Mesmer. People still sometimes talk about being “mesmerized”. Mesmer was able to affect change in many of his patients through what we know today as hypnosis. Sigmund Freud also used hypnosis with some of his patients. However, because he misunderstood how hypnosis works, he failed to achieve consistent results and eventually abandoned its use. In the early 1800’s a Scottish physician James Esdaile, working in India, used hypnosis in hundreds of operations including amputations, with a higher success rate than had ever been attained previously. However, with the advent of medical anesthesia which worked in a quick and consistent manner, hypnosis began to fade from popularity. Hypnosis soon became the domain of the stage performer. This was both a good thing and a bad thing. Many of today’s hypnotherapists cringe at the thought of hypnosis stage shows. But, it must be kept in mind though that stage hypnotists were the ones who were largely responsible for keeping the art of hypnosis alive in the 20th century. However, it must also must be kept in mind that many of the misconceptions that surround hypnosis today actually stem from the work of these performers and the shows they put on. This point will be covered in more detail in my next column. A considerable body of work has been amassed by researchers at various institutions world wide that documents the uses and effectiveness of hypnosis. That body of work continues to grow on a daily basis. Magazines as diverse in nature as Scientific American and Good Housekeeping have recently presented articles to their readers about hypnosis because of the steadily, growing interest in it from different sectors of society. Television shows such as Dateline NBC and The Nature of Things with David Suzuki have extolled the virtues of hypnosis. More and more people are showing an interest in hypnosis to the point where they are currently aware that hypnosis is often used to help those who wish to control their weight or stop smoking. However, what many people may not realize is that hypnosis is very safe, enjoyable and relaxing and has the potential to help people deal effectively with a wide variety of problems. Hypnosis is very effective at reducing and sometimes even eliminating certain types of chronic pain (in this situation, the hypnotist must work closely with the client’s physician). Hypnosis can help to enhance athletic, musical, dance, and in fact, almost any type of performance. It can improve study habits and improve recall of information. It can help to reduce or eliminate anxiety and fear and has proven to be effective in helping people deal with phobias. Hypnosis can be very effective in improving a person’s self-esteem or self-confidence. If you have misplaced an object, there is a good chance that hypnosis can help you pinpoint its location. Having trouble getting a good night’s sleep? Why not give hypnosis a try? Hypnosis can help you relax and prepare for surgery or that dreaded trip to the dentist. And, if you believe psychiatrist Brian Weiss M.D. you can even explore one or more of your own past lives. Dr. Weiss has written a book dealing with past life regression, entitled Many Lives Many Masters, which has sold over one million copies world wide. Remember, hypnosis is enjoyable, relaxing and above all safe. Chances are, if you have a problem, hypnosis may very well be able to help you deal with it effectively. JANET ECKER WHAT DO YOU WANT: Janet Ecker Pickering – Ajax – Uxbridge RE-ELECT A strong voice for our community Authorized by the CFO for the Janet Ecker Campaign 905-427-4411 IT’S YOUR CHOICE WAYNE ARTHURS OR Provincial hopefuls take their shots BByy LLeesslleeyy BBoovviiee Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM — It was a morning of fin- ger pointing as Ajax and Pickering provincial candidates played the blame game Friday. And the topic sparking the liveli- est debate at the forum hosted by the Ajax Pickering Board of Trade was the health of Ontario’s economy. Asked by the audience to account for the Liberals contribution to the debt when in power in the 80s, Wayne Arthurs defended his party, adding it was the entire North American economy that “went for the dump” during that time. The Tories, the Ajax-Pickering- Uxbridge candidate said, have had the benefit of governing during a re- covery period. “There was a $120 million deficit following the New Democratic Party (NDP) government and it hasn’t been recovered,” Mr. Arthurs said, adding there are reports the Conser- vatives have added an additional $20 billion to the debt. Ontario can’t afford tax cuts with the existing debt, said Whitby-Ajax Liberal candidate Dennis Fox. NDP candidate Vern Edwards agreed economies are cyclical and the cur- rent government has been riding out a “current upcycle”. That didn’t sit well with the Pro- gressive Conservative (PC) candi- dates. “It alarms me that the leading Liberal candidate is saying govern- ment doesn’t make a lot of difference and it should frighten you,” Whitby- Ajax candidate Jim Flaherty told the group. “Government makes a lot of difference.” Janet Ecker, PC candidate for Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge, denied her government is “coasting on every coat tail”, citing 1 million new jobs the PC party has created in Ontario over the last eight years in power. “It took three years to dig out from the previous governments,” she said. “If our numbers are so wacky, why is (Liberal leader) Dalton McGuinty using the same numbers to make his plan?” Adam Duncan, the Green Party’s candidate for Pickering-Ajax- Uxbridge, said having never been in power, his party couldn’t take responsibility for the debt. But, the Green Party is “fiscally conservative”, he said, and doesn’t believe our children should be left to continue to pay it down. The Liberal and Conservative candidates also traded blows on the subject of the International Thermonuclear Research Pro- ject (ITER). The Tories have committed to paying half of Canada’s costs for ITER, “no matter where it is” hosted in the world, but the Lib- eral federal government has yet to officially support the bid, said Mr. Flaherty. A financial com- mitment for ITER has been on her party’s books for years, added Ms. Ecker. “That’s the kind of example of the leadership you’re not getting from Ottawa,” she said. “What are they debating this week? The legalization of marijuana.” Mr. Arthurs pointed out the Ontario Liberal party complete- ly supports the project. He said the inability of the Province to convince the Prime Minister to sign the ITER agreement speaks to the poor relationship the Tories have had with the federal government over the last eight years. An element of trust has to develop between the two levels, said Mr. Fox, adding the present relationship is “not a healthy situation”. Most of the panel supported the extension of the 407 east through the rest of Durham. However, Michael MacDonald, Green Party candidate for Whit- by-Ajax, said his party felt it will “carve up our fields” and ques- tioned if it was healthy to grow crops next to a “super highway”. Mr. Flaherty agreed the 407 must be built smartly with min- imum impact on farms, while Mr. Arthurs said there needs to be more co-operation with mu- nicipalities to help offset wear and tear on roads “offloading” from the highway. “I’d like to see 407 affordable enough to see Chevys on it, not just Cadillacs,” he added. Organizers confirmed Dan Edwards, NDP candidate for Whitby-Ajax, wasn’t able to at- tend the forum due to a previ- ous engagement. If life were perfect, every child would sail through the school year without any difficulties. But in the real world some kids do need a little extra help to achieve academic success. One organization helping kids to do this is the Pickering-based Grade Expectations Learning Centre. “Simply put, we specialize in helping students achieve academic success,” says the centre’s director and owner, Rosana Gardner. “However, we do a lot more than that.” Each student is given a comprehensive academic assessment to determine his or her individual needs and abilities. From there, Grade Expectations will develop a program that is tailor - made for your child, addressing his or her needs. The small classroom setting - only three children per session, only two for senior high school math and science-also ensures that the student receives individualized attention from the teacher. “Our teachers are very instructional,” explains Ms. Gardner. “We don’t just give our students sheets of papers with instructions to follow.” The programs, which are taught by qualified teachers only, are comprised of two one-hour sessions per week and will change to accommodate the changing needs of the child. In addition to implementing a child’s program, Grade Expectations also offers homework support. There also is no minimum time commitment as enrollment is renewed each month. Ms. Gardner points out that it is very important to enroll students at Grade Expectations sooner than later. “The students who find the most success are the ones who start early on in the year,” she says. The reason for this is that students start to gain confidence after spending some one-on-one time with their Grade Expectations teacher. “They start believing in themselves, and if we can instill that in the beginning the rest will all follow,” says Ms. Gardener. Grade Expectations Learning Centre has been helping Ajax-Pickering students achieve academic success since 1995. They offer learning programs for students in Grades 1 to 12. Course Code:MUSC 1905 Cost:$50 Call 905.668.0998 COLLEGE PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG — Ontario Power Generation, along with other nu- clear plant operators, faced its regulator late Friday to answer how it operated during the recent blackout. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) held a hear- ing in Ottawa (after News Adver- tiser’s deadline) into the effects of the Aug. 14 on reactors. Pickering nuclear station spokesman Pat O’Brien said a hearing on significant develop- ments is “part of their standard meetings. Because we had the outage in August, it’s on the agenda on how the nuclear in- dustry dealt with it, including the impacts on Pickering.” The hearing isn’t to lay blame, but to gather facts, he said. A Significant Development Re- port (SDR) has to be prepared by a nuclear operator and the regulator each time something major happens at a station. When the blackout occurred, three of the four reactors on the ‘B’ side of the Pickering plant were at full power, while Unit 7 was just being returned to service following a planned outage for maintenance. Also, Unit 4 on the ‘A’ side was at low power and was being re- turned to the power grid for the first time since being put into laid-up state in 1997. The SDR that will be presented to commis- sion members is “strictly a staff report on how the industry func- tioned during the outage,” Mr. O’Brien said. “Although the plant shutdown safely and everybody did what they were suppose to do,” the hearing will deal with the loss of power to the grid, he added. The blackout caused a ‘serious process failure’ in Units 5 and 6 at the Pickering B plant. The CNSC describe a serious process failure as “a failure in the station’s components or systems, which is sufficiently serious that one or more of the specials safety systems must operate to prevent reactor damage.” Losing the grid caused Units 5 and 6 to shutdown, Mr. O’Brien said. “When the plant was rejected by the system, because the sys- tem crashed, the units shutdown, our operators shut them down and followed procedures,” Mr. O’Brien stated. Unit 7 wasn’t pro- ducing power, while Unit 8 was taken off line without a serious process failure occurring. The tripping of safety systems on Units 5 and 6 was equipment related and not the cause of human error, state OPG briefing notes to be presented to commis- sion members. Mr. O’Brien said, “All systems operated” during the outage. At the time of the outage, “We were producing power, but we had no place to send it, so we had to shutdown the system, because we can’t send power out in a vac- uum,” Mr. O’Brien noted. Darlington has systems that allow the plant to continue pro- ducing steam during the outage without having to shut the reac- tors down. “We had to wait until the grid came back,” he said. “Pickering, because it’s an earlier design, we had to exhaust steam to the at- mosphere. We had to shutdown the reactors. It also took longer for us to restart, because we had to shutdown to a cold state.” It took Pickering from five to seven days to get back to full power, he added. OPG meets regulator over blackout procedure DDUURRHHAAMM — NDP leader Howard Hampton says the provincial election is quickly becoming a two- horse race - it’s just who those horses are that he and pollsters are at odds over. Mr. Hampton paid the second visit of his cam- paign to Oshawa Thurs- day, claiming he won Tuesday’s leadership de- bate, the NDP is gaining momentum, and the Con- servative death march has begun. “The eight years of the Conservative government are all done, it is over for them here in Ontario,” he said, rallying the troops at Oshawa NDP candidate Sid Ryan’s office on King Street West. “We’re going to see a change, but the issue over the next seven days is for you to get the change you want, don’t settle for just any change, don’t settle for the loose change, get the change that’s going to make a substantial difference in this province.” Heading into Tuesday’s leaders debate the latest poll from researcher Ipsos-Reid had the Liber- als at 50 per cent, holding a decisive lead among de- cided voters over the Con- servatives at 33 per cent. At 12 per cent, the NDP remained a distant third, but Mr. Hampton says his performance at the de- bate is sure to change that. Here in Oshawa, he con- tinued to hammer home one of his strongest points of the debate - he believes both the Liberal and Con- servative budget plans will lead the Province into deficit. Mr. Hampton insists the NDP plan to institute public auto insurance, raise the minimum wage, freeze rents, and keep health care and education public won’t require any tax increase or lead to a deficit In fact, the party is promising only one tax hike. Start thinking outside the cubicle this Fall. So many observations reported by ‘Out Walking’ readers echo exactly what I’ve been noticing that same day or week. Fay Gee of Wilmot Creek men- tioned seeing “great flocks of blue jays” moving west along the lakeshore, and so have I. Ironically, as I’m writing, I can hear blue jays screaming in the trees behind the house. Earlier today I was scanning for hawks and saw a number of jays streaming after each other in loose flocks, making their way around the rim of Lake Ontario and on south to- ward oak forests in Georgia and other productive wintering grounds. With the number of acorns produced by oak trees in Ontario this summer, it’s probable a fair number of jays will overwinter here in Durham, on the Oak Ridges Moraine especially. In her e-mail, Fay also wrote, “We currently have swarms of small in- sects along the waterfront, but note the blue martins and swallows have disappeared. Have they gone south?” Once again, I’ve noticed the same thing. The skies are nearly empty of martins and swallows, which have al- ready moved on to steamier, buggier locations. The dozens of chimney swifts spotted every day at the Cran- berry Marsh Hawk Watch the first week in September are now probably in Mexico. I had to smile when I read Fay’s mention of “swarms of small in- sects.” Such a clever move, for some species to hatch out after all those hungry predators have departed. Fly- ing insects have a much better chance of reproducing successfully without great aerial acrobats swooping through clouds of mating individuals, vacuuming them into their gaping mouths. I saw insect swarms of my own this week, one warm, humid night. I switched on the porch light for a short while and was amazed at the cloud of midges that gathered, peppering the white wall behind it. They came to the screen door of the kitchen as well, as did a gorgeous big moth with vividly banded un- derwings. Which, of course, started me wondering when night predators such as little brown bats migrate. And why so many nocturnal insects are at- tracted to artificial lights. The second question was intriguing enough to send me off to the li- brary and the Internet for an- swers, only to discover that sci- entists are still debating this fascinating fact of nature. More insects seem to be ac- tive at the dark of the moon, or on cloudy nights, however. Any insect that spends a night fly- ing around a light bulb isn’t mating or feeding, but is wast- ing its short life on a fatal at- traction. The club has committed to raising $250,000 by 2005 towards two new courts as part of a future expansion to the north side of the complex. “We’re always trying to look at where our club is going,” explains Ian Par- sons, president of the Pickering Squash Club. “And when we looked at the club’s future, we looked at double courts.” Doubles squash is an entirely different game than single play, he says. The court is double the size of a single court and allows four people to play instead of two, making the “pace per person” slower. It’s a style of squash be- coming more and more popular as players age and find singles squash too hard on their knees and joints, adds Mr. Par- sons. As a result, doubles squash tends to be a more social sport. But there are professional leagues that play it too. Up until now, however, doubles squash courts have been non-existent in Durham. Having such a facility in Pickering would put the City on the map for squash play, keep the fu- ture of the Pickering Squash Club healthy, and open up the sport to oth- ers, says Mr. Parsons. There are currently 300 people, who play out of the Pickering Recreation Complex, about 150 of them squash club mem- bers. Mr. Parsons took his business case to City offi- cials, who were interested in the idea but advised the group Pickering couldn’t afford the project without the club’s help. “The City just doesn’t have the resources by it- self any longer to arbitrar- ily build these type of pro- jects,” adds Chief Admin- istrative Officer Tom Quinn. “But for those or- ganizations - we don’t care if its sports or culture - who are actively involved and strong enough, the City will be there for them.” Coincidentally, Mr. Quinn is a squash club member himself, having played the sport for 25 years. But he points to similar City partnerships over the years such as the new ice pad at Don Beer Arena, which was built with the help of hockey groups, and new lawn bowling greens financed with the help of local seniors. “We want to make sure the project is viable when we get involved in these type of partnerships. It’s always a hard sell when it’s a trendy thing,” he ex- plains, adding the squash club is one of the City’s most vibrant groups. The two new doubles squash courts, each mea- suring 25-feet wide, 45 feet long and 20 feet plus high, will be part of plans to also add a large exercise room to the recreation complex. The overall project may cost between half a mil- lion to $2 million, says Mr. Quinn. Like the ice pad at Don Beer arena, the help of community groups allows the City to apply for provincial grants, which could possibly cover a third of the project’s costs, he says. Mr. Quinn hopes to in- clude design costs for the new expansion and courts in Pickering’s 2005 bud- get, with possible con- struction in 2005 or 2006. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, September 28, 2003 PAGE 15 P AW+ SE LXR Alignment with 2 tire purchase 1⁄2 PRICE LUBE, OIL & FILTERLUBE, OIL & FILTER 1735 Pickering Parkway1735 Pickering ParkwayHours:Hours: Monday - Friday 7:30 - 6,Monday - Friday 7:30 - 6, Saturday 7:30 - 6,Saturday 7:30 - 6, Sunday 9:00 - 6Sunday 9:00 - 6 SERVICE 905-686-2309SERVICE 905-686-2309 rrs TM CANADIAN TIRE CANADIAN TIRE PICKERINGPICKERING LOCATION ONLY LOCATION ONLY at Brock Road, PICKERINGat Brock Road, PICKERING purchase 1 BF Goodrich Precept touring tire and receive the 2nd at 1⁄2 PRICE 13 inch $39 14 inch $49 15 inch $59 14 inch $54 15 inch $64 16 inch $74 14 inch $59 15 inch $69 16 inch $79 13 inch $44 13 inch $49 Shuttle not available LA131N LA132N $2.50 Enviro Charge Applies STANDARD PROTECTION Castrol Conventional Oil 24249999 ADVANCED PROTECTION Castrol Syntec Blend SemiSynthetic Oil LA143N LA144N 39399999 $2.50 Enviro Charge Applies ULTIMATE PROTECTION Castrol Syntec Synthetic OilLA141N LA142N LA145N $2.50 Enviro Charge Applies 49499999 HELD OVERHELD OVER LIMITED TIME O F F E R PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG — Homework help and bilingual story time is on tap this month at local libraries. Van Staveren, 27, who grew up in Pickering and learned the game playing with the Ajax Wanderers Rugby Club, is feeling good about the team and its chances against the best rugby-playing nations on the planet at the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia next month. "Everyone has been working hard," says van Staveren while working out with the 30-member national team at its training camp at Shawnigan Lake School, just north of Victoria, B.C. He's looking forward to his first appearance at the World Cup. "As you know, the World Cup is every four years and I was just out of the running (for the Canadian team) the last time, so I've been looking forward to this for some time. There's nothing I would rather be doing." He admits the Canadians will be hard-pressed for success at the World Cup as the Canucks are in five-team Pool 'D' that includes traditional rugby powerhouses from Wales and New Zealand. Tonga and Italy round out the pool. Nonetheless, van Staveren, a flanker with the national team, says the Canadians should qualify for the quarter-finals, which means a top-two finish in its pool. "The quarter-finals is a realistic goal coming out of the camp," says van Staveren, even though two key players -- team captain Al Charron and Ryan Banks -- are nursing knee injuries that will keep them out of the team's final tune-up against the B.C. provin- cial team in Vancouver on Satur- day. "We can attack from any posi- tion on the field. We have a big set of forwards led by our captain (Charron). We can play with any pack in the world. We have good backs who can run and pass the ball with anyone in the world." The Canadians have showed well in a number of test matches. The national team played New Zealand Maori in two internation- al matches in Toronto in July. Al- though Canada didn't win either game, losing 65-27 and 30-9, they didn't look out of place. "We knew they had played rugby forever, but we were still able to run and score outside. We did some good work against the best in the world," says van Staveren. More recently, the Canadian team played in the PARA tourna- ment, a four-nation event also in- volving the U.S., Argentina and Uruguay, in August. The Canadi- ans finished 1-3, with its lone win coming against Uruguay 22-11. The Canadians fell to the Ameri- cans 35-20 and to Argentina 62-22. The Canadians fly to Australia on Sept. 29 and will have just over two weeks to acclimatize to the new surroundings and undergo training leading up to the first game in Melbourne on Oct. 12 against Wales. Van Staveren has been on the Canadian national team for the past two years, earning his first of 17 international caps playing in a game against Tonga in 2000. "We played in Vancouver and we won that match. They picked a young team for that match, so it was the first cap for many of us that day," he says. In 1998 and 1999, van Staveren was part of the Pacific Sports De- velopment Program for rugby, playing for a team called the 'Pa- cific Pride', before ascending to the national team. He got his start in rugby as a student at Dunbarton High School where he followed his teacher, John Drue, to the Ajax Wanderers Rugby Club. Just prior to the start of the World Cup, van Staveren will mark his 28th birthday. This year, he'll celebrate in a special way -- playing for Canada against the world's best teams. "I can't think of a better way to celebrate it," he says. A.J. As in prior years, the Panthers' minor midgets swept the opposi- tion giving them a 15-0 record over the past three years. Goalies Devan Tannahill and David Tomei combined for three shutouts, while the defence con- sistently neutralized opposition opportunities allowing the for- wards to come up with the big goal when required. Pickering defeated Cooksville 7-2 in the final after disposing of Ajax 6-0 in the semifinal. The But 'N' Ben minor midget's perfect round-robin record was achieved with victories over Hill- crest (5-3), Willowdale (5-0) and Malton (4-0). Playing defence are Michael Accettone, Brian Darlow, Matt McGeown, Dan Sullivan and Jamie Webster. The forwards are Craig Adams, Darryn Carpenter, Jordan En- twistle, Chad Gaudet, Dan Glavin, Michael O'Sullivan, An- drew Pavlidis, Damien Pavlidis and Phillip Pett. In a hard-fought final, the Raiders received a strong defensive effort, which was the key to the team's overall success during the tournament. Jordan Minos scored the lone Ajax-Pickering goal, assisted by Steven Deeg and Robbie Affleck. The Raiders defeated the North Central Preda- tors 4-1 in the semifinal to set up the championship final against the Markham Islanders. Affleck, Jake Bannister, Deeg and Minos scored. Affleck and Tyler Traill each recorded two as- sists, Adam Valadao added one. Goaltender Kristoff Lyons provided excellent work in net. In round-robin play, the 'AAA' atoms led their division in points, going undefeated with a 3-0 record. In their first game, the hometown Ajax-Picker- ing Raiders defeated the Wexford Raiders 4-1. Traill led the way with two goals and two assists. Rounding out the scoring was Affleck and Deeg. Adding assists were Af- fleck with two, Eric Mitchell and Deeg. Goal- tender Hugh Hill turned back 23 of the 24 shots on net. In Game 2, the Raiders beat Eastern ‘AAA’ league rivals North Cen- tral Predators 4-1. Christian Kirk scored twice, Eric Rizzo and Scott Desroches chipped in with one apiece. As- sists went to Valadao with two, Bannister, Af- fleck and Deeg. Lyons played a solid game in net, narrowly missing his first shutout. In the third game, the Raiders defeated a strong Elgin-Middlesex team 1-0. Steve Deeg was the scor- ing hero, assisted by Scott Desroches. The forward unit of Tyler Mal- one, Jordan Kotsopoulos and Minos supplied the physical play keeping Elgin-Middlesex off bal- ance. Goaltender Hill was a wall earn- ing his first shutout of the season. In additional to stellar goaltend- ing by Hill and Lyons, defencemen Jake Buckler, Alex Fortin and Jacob Lessard were outstanding on the blue line, limiting the oppo- sition to only seven goals against in the five tournament games. There is no logi- cal explanation for this other than a pure money grab. This situation is typical in a monopoly situation. It would be next to impossible for this to happen in the States, simply because of the enormous number of Financial institutions that are competing for your business. In Canada we have a very select group of lenders, which greatly reduces any com- petition factor. This is the primary reason to object to any Bank merg- ers. Unless the Government will open the gates and allow smaller Banks and Trust Companies to evolve, the people of Canada will be in a lose, lose situation. Credit- What Not To Do Do not let your existing accounts fall behind. Always make at least the minimum payment due. There is a huge misconception that because an account is brought current, the problem has gone away. Even though the account has been brought current, the arrears will have an effect for a minimum of one year. Do not exceed your limits on any card. This has a major negative impact on your credit report. Finally, do not apply or “shop” your credit needs all over town. Any more than three inquiries over a six month period has a major negative impact on your credit scoring. Why Central Funding Group? Fast Professional service, with your requirements being our primary concern. Prime First mortgages at 1.3% below posted market rates. Prime secondary financing to 100% of current value. Private Mortgages are always available for those clients that do not fall into the normal lending stream. Consolidations have always been a specialty, with the average monthly savings in excess of $800 a month. Till next time Glenn A.
