PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG — Earlier this sum-
mer, Pickering’s Perdita Felicien
staked her claim as the top colle-
giate hurdler in the U.S.
Now, she’s on top of the world.
Felicien blazed a trail to glory
at the 2003 IAAF World Track
and Field Championships in
Paris, France, capturing the gold
medal in Wednesday’s final of the
women’s 100-metre hurdles. She
crossed the finish line in a blis-
tering 12.53 seconds, ahead of sil-
ver medallist Brigitte Foster of
Jamaica in 12.57 seconds and
American Miesha McKelvy, the
bronze medallist, in 12.67.
The gold medal is the first for
Canada since the country’s 4-x-
100-metre men’s relay team won
gold in 1997. It’s also the first ever
medal for a Canadian woman in
the history of the world champi-
onships that date back to 1983.
In the semifinal meet, Felicien
moved on to the world final after
winning her heat in 12.68 sec-
onds, beating U.S. hurdling leg-
end Gail Devers in the process.
Felicien’s time in the finals also
brought down the previous
Canadian record in the 100-
metre hurdles. Katie Anderson
set the previous record of 12.61 in
1999.

PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG — The right of gay
couples to marry promises to be
the “in-your-face” issue in the
next federal election, says local
MP Dan McTeague.
With Prime Minister Jean
Chretien refusing to appeal the
Ontario court ruling or hold a
national referendum on the
issue, same sex marriage legisla-
tion will likely remain tied up at
the Supreme Court until an
election is called, predicts the
member for Pickering-Ajax-

“It will be something everyone
will have to deal with,” he said in
a recent interview. “And there
will be voters who will blame the

DDUURRHHAAMM — It’s a milestone year for the
Mayor’s Charity Classic Golf Tournament,
says Allan Arsenault.
“We have raised $825,000 in the first seven
years of the tournament,” says the event
chairman, adding the event is expected to
top the $1-million fund-raising mark this year.
The classic raises money for Rouge Valley
Ajax and Pickering Hospital, and in recent
years the focus has been on improvements to
the emergency department. Mr. Arsenault
notes that upgrades to the department ben-
efit the entire community, and evidence of
the classic’s contribution can now be seen at
the hospital with new cardiac monitors in-
stalled in recent days.
The general public is invited to participate
in the tournament, but if you’re not already
signed up, you’ll have to wait until next year.
Mr. Arsenault says the classic sells out very
quickly, and this year is no exception.
“It’s been an extremely successful event for
the community and for the hospital,” he says.
The Pickering Town Centre is the classic’s
lead sponsor, and the News Advertiser is also
a sponsor.
DDUURRHHAAMM — Rene Soetens, Mayor’s Charity Classic Golf Tournament committee member, and Dr. Steve Gal-
lay, orthopedic surgeon at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering do some delicate work to ensure the turf at Cher-
ry Downs Golf & Country Club is in fine shape for the Sept. 11 event.

Air travel
outside
Canada is
back on
BByy MMiikkee RRuuttaa
Staff Writer
DDUURRHHAAMM — The public
school board, Monday, lift-
ed a blanket ban on stu-
dent trips outside of Cana-
da involving air travel.
The Durham District
School Board ban was put
in place earlier this year
when the United States in-
vaded Iraq. Apart from the
obvious concern for stu-
dents’ safety, the board
was worried that a terrorist
attack could ground
f lights, leaving students
and staff stranded in a for-
eign country.
“We considered the ban
at the Aug. 20 administra-
tive council (meeting) and
our recommendation to
the board is that for all
school-organized air travel
outside of Canada, that it
be considered on an indi-
vidual basis through re-
quests made to adminis-
trative council,” education
director Craig Burch told
trustees at the board meet-
ing.
“It doesn’t mean we’re
throwing caution to the
wind; we understand there
is a new reality in the
world.”
However some trustees
questioned if the board’s
senior staff should be mak-
ing the decision in isola-
tion- and if trustees should
not be involved in it.
Oshawa Trustee Kath-
leen Hopper, who opposed
the spring travel ban, said
some parents at the time
thought it was “arbitrary.”
She suggested the board
base its decision on what
the external affairs depart-
ment in its travel advi-
sories indicates about the
safety of going to foreign
lands, rather than on “a
gut feeling.”
Ajax Wards 3 and 4
Trustee Melinda Crawford
disagreed.
“I do think that the ad-
ministrative council does-
n’t just go on gut feelings,”
she said.
Parents always have the
option of going ahead and
doing the trip if they wish,
said Pickering trustee Paul
Crawford. He asked if ad-
ministrative council has a
set of criteria on which to
make the decision and if a
vote is taken.
Mr. Burch said there is a
criteria list and the educa-
tional value of the trip is at
the top if it. If there is a de-
bate amongst administra-
tive council, a vote would
be taken, he said. Mr.
Burch said senior staff are
aware of the federal gov-
ernment Web site and do
take it into account.
“We’re more conserva-
tive than the department
of external affairs,” he said.
“If there is a caution, we
would not be supporting
the student trip.”
Oshawa Trustee Susan
Shelter feels trustees
should formally approve
any decision in a motion
regarding student travel.
However board chair-
man Elizabeth Roy said
that would represent a
change of procedure, since
trustees had agreed to
leave it up to staff. Trustee
Shetler clarified that the
trustee motion would “re-
inforce what administra-
tive council has decided.”
Mr. Burch said if admin-
istrative council’s decision
“is controversial” it would
come back to trustees.
Durham’s public and
Catholic school board
banned air travel following
the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist
attack on the United
States. They were lifted in
May 2002, but put in place
again last spring.
The ban is still in place
at the Durham Catholic
District School Board, said
Mitch LePage, acting edu-
cation director.
“The trips are still off for
the time being,” he said.
Mr. LePage said senior
staff is gauging the interna-
tional situation “and will be
developing a position in
early September.”

DDUURRHHAAMM — Laura Elliott won’t
start this school year as a Durham
District School Board superinten-
dent.
After the long weekend, she re-

College of Teachers in Toronto.
“My official title is manger of

ing in the membership services de-
partment,” says Ms. Elliott.
Among her highlights as the
board’s technical and information
services superintendent, she over-
saw the creation of the board’s on-

But Mr. McTeague ar-
gued the judiciary effec-
tively usurped the role of
parliament when the On-
tario Court of Appeal de-
cided June 10 the tradi-
tional definition of mar-
riage discriminated
against gays and lesbians.
He was among a group
of MPs who lobbied hard
for a national referendum
on the issue at a caucus
meeting meeting last
week, but the Prime Min-
ister emerged from the de-
bate, clearly opposed to
the idea.
“A r eferendum would
have invited much wider
debate,” explained Mr.
McTeague. “It would have
involved people from not
only a legal perspective,
but a social and theologi-
cal background as well.
There are a number of
people who want to pipe in
on this.”
Constituents have been
vocal in their opposition
to the decision, he said.
It’s garnered a stronger re-
sponse from the public
than rising gasoline
prices, another issue of
contention for the MP.
“There have been
emails, letters, faxes,
never mind the ones who
pull me over at Tim Hor-
tons and say, ‘What the
hell are you guys doing?’”
Mr. McTeague said.
“There are so many letters
and emails I can’t get back
to them all.”
L ast week’s caucus
meeting was a “respectful
debate,” with neither side
resorting to labels or
name-calling, he said. Lib-
erals are definitely divided
on the issue, Mr.
McTeague said, but he
feels the majority support
the traditional definition
of marriage.
“The perception out
there is that society’s val-
ues have changed but the
reality is they haven’t,” he
added, pointing to a call
from the Canadian Al-
liance in 1999 to reaffirm
marriage as a heterosexu-
al union.
The motion earned the
vast majority of Liberal
support, Mr. McTeague
said, and passed by a vote
of 216 to 55.

Writing is
on the wall
The fight against vandalism
needs action by all
Sprawling letters of hatred and intolerance scrawled on
a brick wall like a ghetto war cry: That was the scene
that awaited some young Pickering children when they
showed up to play soccer at their neighbourhood park Mon-
day night.
Beyond the message the authors of destruction intended is
another one. It is a call to vigilance for everyone who values
their communities and the inherent safety healthy neigh-
bourhoods provide. No police force is large enough to be
everywhere, all the time. Only with the help of residents can
we ensure our communities remain places where we want to
live.
In this recent incident, the back wall of the Rosebank Road
Public School, adjacent to the park, was slathered with vi-
cious words of hate. But graffiti and vandalism are nothing
new in Ajax either, where residents and the Town have been
seriously wrangling with the issue the last two years, stem-
ming in large part from the destruction of the Harwood Point
Historical Garden.
If you live in an urban, or even suburban area, especially
one neighbouring the country's biggest metropolis, perhaps it
would be naive to think you would never encounter such inci-
dents. But, if these occurrences are left unchecked, they
propagate until people not longer want to frequent our parks
and community spaces. The assaults are against people, not
walls or memorials, and the issue is no longer one of sensibil-
ities but of safety.
In Toronto, a 24-hour removal policy has been put in place
as part of an aggressive anti-graffiti campaign. Statistics
have proven that the best way to deter the artists is to silence
their voice as quickly as possible. So, it is heartening to know
in this case "about half a dozen" of Pickering's citizens called
Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner to inform him of the in-
cident, to which he responded quickly. Kudos also to the
school board, which acted on the complaint within hours and
had crews working Tuesday to remove the writing.
The Town of Ajax, which recently introduced a hotline (619-
AJAX, ext. CARE), for vandalism reporting, is also taking a
proactive approach to the problem. The 24-hour line lets res-
idents be part of the solution.
With Pickering, Ajax, the school boards, and police taking
active roles in tackling the problem, it's really up to the rest
of us to step up and do our part.

Re: Terror plot: 19 detained over sus-
picion of possible terrorist activity,
News Advertiser, Aug. 24:
I applaud the efforts of those as-
signed the responsibility to secure the
Pickering Nuclear Station from those
that would try to cause damage to it
and the surrounding area and resi-
dents.. Excellent job and thank you!
As to Mr. Cleroux and his comment
on imposing a no-fly zone over these
plants being "difficult to enforce and im-
practical" and "How would you get to
Pearson International Airport," I find
both comments difficult to believe.
Firstly, a no-fly zone, I would expect,
would be a radius of say five kilometres,
and that would be a reasonable obsta-
cle to plan around, yet it would provide
enough warning for the plant to react to
a wandering plane, or worse, an attack.
His second comment was plain ridicu-
lous. I believe this message of preven-
tion is reasonable in this day and age of
suicidal maniacs, so I say enforce a no-
f ly zone.

Aneighbour once remarked
he knew he was getting old
when he realized he knew
more people in the cemetery than
in our village. The same is true for
me. Maybe that's why I usually in-
clude a trek through the cemetery
as part of my daily constitutional,
although if anyone asks I like to say
I'm just making sure I'll feel right at
home when they move me in per-
manently.
I've always had an interest in
cemeteries. It no doubt ties in with
my appreciation for local history
but I think it's in my genes too. I'm
told my grandmother used to go to
the graveyard at night on Hal-
loween and flutter about in a sheet
when the trick-or-treaters passed
by. My dad enjoyed a tired old
cemetery joke every time we drove
past one. He'd say, "Do you know
how many dead people there are in
that cemetery?" And we'd chant,
"They're all dead!"
I always thought the cemetery
was a great place to play hide-and-
seek but the Prince Albert ceme-
tery has 15 rules posted and the
first one prohibits children under
12 unless accompanied by an adult.
The fourth rule says wild flowers
and weeds aren't allowed either but
the last time I was there I noticed a
few dandelions had snuck past the
authorities. Occasionally the in-
scriptions on headstones provide a
tantalizing glimpse into a past life.
Siloam cemetery has a veteran of
the American Civil War. Goodwood
has a man killed in an explosion in
Newmarket. A cemetery in
Markham has a boy whose inscrip-
tion reads, 'Shot Dead.' A tiny
abandoned cemetery in Uxbridge
Township has a stone listing the
deaths of three children within two
days. My mother-in-law told me
they had died of black diptheria
and everyone was so afraid of
catching it the father had to go out
after dark and bury the children
himself. The old monuments often
bear a religious motif but today
anything goes. I've seen golf clubs,
snowmobiles, guitars, square
dancers, 18-wheelers, even a re-
volver blasted into the polished
surface of the granite.
Canada's multiculturalism has
always been evident on the head-
stones with nostalgic declarations
of one's origins. The old ones say,
native of Wales or Dumfrieshire but
now, especially in the more urban
areas to the south, some monu-
ments announce origins in Guyana
or Greece, Vietnam or Hong Kong.
Most old cemeteries got their
start in churchyards but the new
ones seem to be business enterpris-
es. At some you can buy monu-
ments, markers, artificial flowers
and winter wreaths in addition to
your plot. I never thought I'd live to
see the day when there was one-
stop shopping in a graveyard.

MPs from across
Canada give
endorsement of
fusion research
project
BByy JJaaccqquuiiee MMccIInnnneess
Staff Editor
DDUURRHHAAMM — The ITER fusion re-
search project got a huge injection of
support at last week’s Liberal cau-
cus meeting in North Bay with MPs
from across Canada endorsing this
country’s participation in the pro-
ject and its bid to host the multi-bil-
lion facility in Clarington.
“A fter same-sex marriage, it was
the most talked about topic, maybe
save federal election boundaries,”
says Murray Stewart, ITER Canada
president. “From what we could tell
from discussions, 75 to 80 per cent of
all the regional caucuses supported
it leading up to the national caucus
meeting,” where that support was
confirmed, he says.
After 10 years of lobbying, it could
be less than 10 weeks before Cana-
da’s ITER proponents find out if
they have been successful.
A federal cabinet decision on
whether to move forward as a party
on the International Thermonuclear
Experimental Reactor (ITER) is ex-
pected at a Sept. 18 meeting. The in-
ternational partners on the project
are expected to decide on a global lo-
cation for the facility in October.
“We have the superior site,” says
Regional Chairman Roger Ander-
son. “But we need the feds’ commit-
ment to bring this thing home.”
The events at the caucus meeting
Wednesday were a huge step in the
right direction says Clarington
Mayor John Mutton, who notes it
should make it easier for cabinet to
move ahead with funding for the
project.
“It was exactly what we want. Now
we need the Prime Minister to listen
to the representatives and commit
the money,” says the mayor.
Dr. Stewart has led this country’s
bid, alongside federal negotiators
from Natural Resources Canada, to
host the international R&D facility
in Clarington although Spain,
France and Japan are vying for it to
be located in their countries. The
European Union, United States,
Japan, China, Korea and the Russ-
ian Federation are all partnering on
the $18-billion project aimed to find
a clean, mass production energy for
commercial use across the globe by
the middle of this century.
If it joins the project and is chosen
to host it, Canada’s share of costs is
estimated at about $2.3 billion over
30 years starting in 2005. The On-

ITER gets national support
tario government has agreed
to cover half Canada’ cost but
nothing will move forward
until a decision by federal
politicians on whether to
commit to the remainder of
the funding.
Premier Ernie Eves is ex-
pected to send a letter to the
Prime Minister this week ask-
ing for his support.
The federal government
pulled Canada’s original offer
off the negotiation table for
retooling last December.
As Jim Campbell, the se-
nior federal negotiator ex-
plained at the time, “We de-
termined the current bid had
no chance of success and we
either have to up the ante or
withdraw the bid.” He expect-
ed his government would
have a final revised offer on
the table by March or would
withdraw all together, but to
date, it has done neither.
At negotiation meetings in
Tokyo last month, Dr. Stew-
art says the other interna-
tional parties allowed Canada
to sit at the table but moved
forward on the assumption
there was no offer from this
country.
“They (the international
partners) are basically dis-
counting us until we come for-
ward with a revised offer,”
says Dr. Stewart. “The other
parties are not waiting for
us,” as they get closer to a de-
cision on where to put the fa-
cility that will be home to
hundreds of international sci-
entists.
Still, if the federal govern-
ment gives the nod, Dr. Stew-
art believes there is still time
for Canada to win it. “There is
nothing irreparable. Obvious-
ly the sooner we have a deci-
sion the better but they (the
other parties) all understand
bureaucracy,” he relates.
If Canada is not selected to
host ITER but participates
with the partners, its invest-
ment cost would be cut in
half.
The economic benefits
would be diminished, but still
substantial, according to a re-
port by 29 pre-eminent scien-
tists completed this past
spring.
Canada would still spend
about half its investment on
research and development
here and would also secure
rights to the technologies de-
veloped, both for a future en-
ergy source and for any spin-
off industries, discovered dur-
ing the research process.

Imagine visions of gracefully swaying
ornamental grasses adding drama into the
late summer garden; visions of lush green
hostas happily growing in shady areas;
visions of rainbow colours provided by a
wide variety of blooming perennials.
Ornamental grasses, hostas and
perennials are a welcome addition in a
variety of home landscaping situations.
Ornamental grasses start the growing
season off slow, however, the final hurrahs
of summer see the grasses displaying
showy flower plumes or seed heads with
many varieties also turning red to
burgundy in cooler temperatures. ‘Karl
Foerster’ grass was the perennial selection
of the year in 2001, and it has the
following positive attribute - it grows to
four-feet tall with a stiff uniform upright
habit giving excellent vertical height into
any garden area.
Other excellent selections in ornamental
grasses include:
• Micanthus ‘Gracillimus’ - this has long
narrow green leaves and is ideal in a front
yard.
• Micanthus ‘Morning Light’ is very
similar to ‘Gracillimus’ with the addition
of a narrow band of white on the margins,
which makes the grass shimmer
• Hostas are the queens of the shady
garden with every shade of green present
as well as blue-leaved hostas, yellow-
leaved and variegated two-tone.
For any style of shady garden there is
certainly a hosta that will be appropriate.
Late summer blooming perennials that
provide colour in the garden include the
following:
• Echinacea (common name Purple
coneflower) - this flower features large
brightly coloured daisy-like petals that
surround a prominent central brown cone.
This is an excellent flower for cutting and
the seed heads can be used in dried
arrangements.
• Rudbeckias (common name Black Eyed
Susan) available in many heights and
combinations of yellow to orange to
bronze is a superb flower for a vibrant
splash in the garden and is also excellent
for cuttings
• ‘Stella D’oro’ daylilies are an excellent
repeat blooming daylily. D’oro is Spanish
for gold and this yellow is that - a
beautiful golden which almost resembles
velvet. Before the flowers appear, the neat
tidy leaves resemble ornamental grasses,
growing only to 15 - 18-inches tall,
however the real beauty is the continuous
flowering from May to October with
regular deadheading.
Until next time’s column...Sit back and
envision your garden.
Add drama to the garden with
ornamental grasses

The Pickering Town

“We’re looking for all

Mr. Couch said last

DDUURRHHAAMM — Those who
live in Pickering’s Amber-
lea area will remember
the City’s three-stream re-
cycling/ organics/ garbage
pilot program.
As Pickering chose to
tie in with Durham Re-
gion’s expanded Blue Box
collection system rather
than opt to continue with
the large grey cart for re-
cycling and garbage, these
carts are now for sale to
the public for $25 each.
The split carts, with
butterfly flap tops, are on
wheels and stand 46 inch-
es high and 32 inches
wide. The divider can be
easily removed. Some will
be kept by the city to
gather recyclables at
events.
The large green carts in
the pilot are still with Am-
berlea residents for the
collection of food scraps
and yard trimmings.
The pilot ran one full
year and proved that resi-
dents of 520 households
could divert, on average,
63 per cent from the waste
stream.
To view the grey cart,
visit Pickering’s Civic
Centre’s second floor at 1
The Esplanade or take
out the 15 minute ‘Rolling
to Reduce’ video available
at the Civic Centre or
from Pickering’s central
or Petticoat Creek li-
braries.
If you wish to purchase
a cart for either your own
home or would find it
valuable at work, contact
Grant Mahone at 905-420-
4660, ext 2185.

In Ajax, Stephen
Brake and Grant Taylor
of Operations and Envi-
ronmental Services are
about to test an electric
composter with the
Town’s staff.
The ‘Byron’ plastic en-
cased small motorized
compost unit, on loan
from Alco Electronics in
Markham, matches an of-
f ice’s decor. When food
scraps, tea bags, and cof-
fee grounds are added,
the Byron’s rotator acti-
vates the sawdust-like
material to help break
down the contents.
It is suitable, of course,
for apartment dwellers,
homeowners, church
groups, or daycare chil-
dren, etc, who do not wish
to vermicompost with red
wigglers in a worm bin or
cannot backyard com-
post.
To inquire or examine
this model, visit 471
Mackenzie Drive in
Markham during regular
business hours.
Hopefully the City of
Pickering as well as many
businesses or groups
within our two communi-
ties will opt to test this
composter too while it is
available in our area.

The ‘materials ex-

residents and businesses
alike to ask for items they
wish to acquire as well as
list things they want to
discard. It offers the per-

has a by-product that is
useful to another industry

savings in waste collection
services.
The site demonstrates
good community spirit as
well as diverts reusable
materials from landfill in

Kinsmen clubs
come through
to help the
beef industry
BByy AAlleexxiiss SScciiuukk
Staff Writer
DDUURRHHAAMM — Lunch is on the
Kinsmen Club this Monday.
Enjoy a free burger and be
a part of a record-breaking
attempt as part of the club’s
first Canadian-wide Beef-on-
a-Bun day.
Over 1,000 burgers will be
given away locally on a first-
come, first-served basis.
The event was started out
west by the Alberta Cattle-
men’s Association to get peo-
ple back to eating beef after
the recent mad cow scare.
Kinsmen clubs across
Canada are holding similar
events and if more than one
million burgers are given
away, the club makes the
Guinness Book of Records
for the most burgers given
out on one day.
The Durham Cattlemen’s
Association is sponsoring
the event and Port Perry
IGA is donating the beef.
Herrington Quality Butch-
ers, also of Port Perry, is do-
nating its time and labour
for turning small cuts of beef
into beef patties, while mem-
bers from the Port Perry and
Pickering Kinsmen clubs will
be helping out as well.
Enbridge Gas is chipping
in with four barbecues and a
canopy, while the Oshawa
A&P stores have offered gift
certificates to cover the
condiments.
Glenn Towns, co-chairman
of the local Beef-On-A-Bun
day, said the afternoon will
be a no-frills event.
“We are encouraging peo-
ple to come out, have a burg-
er and bring your family and
friends. This is the first time
anything like this has ever
happened across Canada so
we will see how it goes,” he
said.
There will be pop and
other refreshments to wash
down the meal.
“It will be a good atmos-
phere and a good get-togeth-
er,” said Mr. Towns.
“It is something good for
the city and for the down-
town area. Maybe it will let
people know that the Kins-
men are still around.”
The burgers hit the grill at
noon Sept. 1 at the Kinsmen
Hall in Oshawa, 109 Colborne
St. W.
The Kinsmen plan on
cooking until 7 p.m. or “when the
burgers are gone,” whichever comes
first.
For more information about the
event call Mr. Towns at 905-436-

PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG — A Pickering res-
ident described as “a true
leader” has received the high-
est honour from Ontario’s ele-
mentary teachers.
Diana Tomlinson was
awarded an honourary life
membership in the Elemen-
tary Teachers’ Federation of
Ontario (ETFO) at the
union’s annual meeting in
Toronto.
The federation’s highest
form of recognition, hon-
ourary life memberships are
given to members who have
retired and given excellent
service to ETFO at the
provincial level.
A teacher, professor, entre-
preneur and ETFO staff
member, Ms. Tomlinson most
recently was the union’s coor-
dinator of professional devel-
opment services.
“Diana has made an extra-
ordinary contribution to edu-
cation, not just within our
federation, but also across
the country,” ETFO president
Emily Noble told delegates.
“She has extensive experience
in educational reform. She
has written curriculum, pre-
sented training, trained pre-
senters, initiated programs
and represented ETFO on
ministry committees and
work groups. As co-ordinator,
Diana oversaw the develop-
ment of ETFO’s outstanding
professional development
programs, including the sum-
mer institutes and e-learn-
ing.”
Ms. Noble, who in the press
release described Ms. Tomlin-
son as “a true leader,” won-
dered if the Pickering woman
is indeed retired.
“Most of us doubt that,” she
quipped. “Her broad interests
and consuming curiousity will
keep her busy and engaged
for years to come.”

Nerve and verve
take Felicien
to the top
BByy AAll RRiivveetttt
Sports Editor
PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ——If she didn't al-
ready know it, she knows it
now: Perdita Felicien possesses
nerves of steel.
Competing at her second
IAAF World Track and Field
Championships, Felicien lined
up against the top hurdlers in
the world in Wednesday's final
of the women's 100-metre hur-
dles in Paris, France. Summon-
ing an inner strength she didn't
know she had, the Pickering
Olympian arrived at the pinna-
cle of her sport: World champi-
on.
"I proved it to myself that I'm
made of steel. It was the most
intense competition I've ever
been in," says Felicien in an in-
ter view from France Thursday
morning. "In the Olympics (in
2000 in Sydney, Australia), I
went there for the experience. I
wanted top four here no matter
what. I had to be as calm as
possible, but still be hungry and
aggressive. I knew those girls
weren't going to go down with-
out a fight. But, nothing was
going to keep me from what I
had been hoping for last night.
It was meant to be."
Stepping into the starting
blocks for Wednesday after-
noon's final, the 22-year-old
hurdler (who turns 23 today)
not only had to keep her nerves
in check, but also overcome a
bout of fatigue to emerge as the
unlikely gold medallist.
"In the warm-up, I wasn't feel-
ing so great. I was so exhausted
from running the other heats
and it was really hot that day. I
wasn't feeling great. But, never-
theless, when I was in the
blocks, I thought that this is
what I had trained for, for a
year.
"I really tried not to think
about who I was up against. I've
seen these girls race and they
had amazing times. I kept re-
peating to myself that this is
what I came here for. I came
here to be a champion and to
compete. I wanted to be as ag-
gressive as I could the entire
race."
From a fluid, fast start right
through the 10th and final hur-
dle, Felicien ran the race of her
life to emerge as world champi-
on, crossing the line in a per-
sonal-best time of 12.53 sec-
onds. It eclipsed the previous
Canadian record for the 100m
hurdles, 12.61 set by Katie An-
derson in 1999. Brigitte Foster,
of Jamaica, finished with the
silver medal; American Miesha
McKelvy took the bronze.
"At the seventh hurdle, I knew
I was in the lead and all I could
think about was 'Oh, my God,
how am I going to hang on to
my lead?' I could hear Brigitte
yelping and grunting beside me.
When I was at the last hurdle, I
sprinted as hard as I could. I
felt like I had won; I couldn't see
anyone else."
But, Felicien recalls trying
not to get caught up in the mo-
ment, but rather waiting for the
final results, to see if it was real.
Only after the results went up
on the scoreboard did she allow
herself to celebrate.
"I was in awe. I was walking
around after the race and when
I saw the results go up I was so
happy and so relieved it was
over," she says.
And, she was mostly in disbe-
lief when her blistering 12.53
seconds winning time was
f lashed on the scoreboard.
"To run 12.53 and find out I
had obliterated the Canadian
record and to have it happen
where it counted the most, I
still can't believe I did that."
More than anything else, Feli-
cien notes it was the quick start
that put her on the track to
gold in the final. Her starts
have traditionally been the
weakest part of her race, but
not on this day.
"I got out of the blocks so
quickly. At the first hurdle I was
thinking 'That was great.' My
starts have always been my
Achilles heel, so I had been
working on it. My start is the
reason I won the race, I think."
Felicien notes she was per-
fectly content in her role as a
relative unknown on the inter-
national track and field stage,
and was also unfazed by being
taken lightly by her fellow hur-
dlers at the worlds.
"Oh, I think they're going to
pay a bit more attention to me
now. They didn't give me the at-
tention I probably deserved and
they dismissed me. I loved com-
ing in here being the potential
spoiler. I came here to be fast
and turn some heads and sur-
prise some people, but now my
cover's blown."
She's an unknown no more.
Following her victory at the
worlds, it's been a non-stop
whirlwind of interviews with
press from throughout the
world. She's taking it in stride
though, comfortable in her
newfound celebrity and notori-
ety.
"A fter the race, I've been talk-
ing to the press and signing au-
tog raphs. In Europe, track and
f ield is extremely big, so people
have been calling my name. I
don't mind doing interviews. I
set out to be a champion, so I'm
glad to give back to my sport.
It's fine with me. This is what I
asked for, so I'm taking it."
And, her 23rd birthday to be
celebrated today will be one she
won't soon forget.
"This is the best birthday pre-
sent ever," she says. "A gold
medal on my 23rd birthday -- I
couldn't have imagined it."

Pickering teen
helps bring
beloved show to a
new generation
BByy AAll RRiivveetttt
Staff Editor
It's Christmas in August on
the set of Degrassi: The Next
Generation.
Although the weather hovers
around 30-degrees Celsius out-
side the Toronto studios of Epit-
ome Pictures, inside on the set of
the fictitious Degrassi Communi-
ty School, banners are hung in
the front foyer that depict how
various cultures celebrate the
holidays.
The Degrassi set is an exact
replica of a typical Toronto high
school, containing literally all the
trappings of a working school.
Outside, there's a realistic ce-
ment block school façade and, in-
side, large double doors lead to
the main foyer, complete with a
main office and trophy cases.
Also on the set are classrooms,
hallways with lockers and even a
gymnasium. There's also a set
depicting the inside of a mall, in-
cluding storefronts all decorated
for the festive season.
Pickering's Andrea Lewis in
the role of Hazel Aden is part of
the ensemble cast of Degrassi:
The Next Generation. She and
the 17 other young actors on the
show's cast are hard at work on
the hour-long Christmas special
for the CTV program. The Christ-
mas episode marks the half-way
mark in the 22-episode schedule
of the award-winning series, set
to roll out its third season Sept.
17. The show's Christmas special,
says Lewis, will examine how dif-
ferent cultures celebrate the holi-
days. She's reluctant to give away
any more plot details of the show
that will, oddly enough, air
around Christmas time.
"It's about all the different ways
of celebrating Christmas, like
Kwanzaa and Hanukkah," ex-
plains Lewis, who was resplen-
dent in a traditional Somali robe
for her upcoming scenes during
filming at the Toronto studio last
Wednesday.
The just-turned 18 year old is in
her third season with Degrassi,
which features an ensemble cast
of Canadian actors. Her charac-
ter is best friends with Paige
Michalchuk (played by Lauren
Collins), part of the in-crowd at
Degrassi. Hazel, says Lewis, has
grown and evolved over the past
two seasons, from being one of
the minor characters to one of
the lead roles on the hit series
that in its two years on the air
has developed a strong U.S. audi-
ence as it's seen on such net-
works as ABC Family and on the
N (Noggin) Network.
"She has definitely evolved.
When we first started the series
she was really one of the other
characters. Now, she has a family
and a religion and plot lines
about her, so she has really devel-
oped a lot," says Lewis, who has
been acting since age two.
One of the show's recent plot
lines has Hazel revealing to
friends that she's Somalian and a
Muslim. It wasn't an easy thing
for her to do, but she later finds
her personal revelations weren't
as traumatic as she first thought
they would be.
"She used to be embarrassed
by it, but now she's enjoying (her
Somalian heritage) and explor-
ing it," says Lewis of Hazel.
As one of the few series on
Canadian television targeted to
the teen market, Lewis says sea-
son three of Degrassi: The Next
Generation will continue to ex-
plore issues of interest to
teenagers, especially the realm of
relationships.
"This season really steps up
and really deals with teenage is-
sues and real teenage stories,"
she explains. "We'll be dealing
with a lot of relationship stories -
- and the drama that comes with
them."
But, most of all, Lewis is having
a great time being part of the
tight-knit Degrassi cast that has
been hard at work since May and
will continue filming the series
for several more months.
"Oh yeah, I love coming here
and working with all the other ac-
tors. Everyone here is like a big
family, so it's a lot of fun."
•••••••
Although the air condition-
ing is off in the Epitome
studios in the wake of the
power shortage that gripped On-
tario recently, the cast and crew
of Degrassi: The Next Genera-
tion pressed on despite the swel-
tering sound stage in their film-
ing of Episode 11 and 12, the
hour-long Christmas special.
The crew is currently working
on a scene inside the school in-
volving Joey Jeremiah (played by
Pat Mastroianni), a character
from the original 'The Kids of De-
grassi Street' who's back on the
new series. Joey's stepson Craig
Manning (played by Jake Ep-
stein) is inconsolable since being
'double dumped' after dating two
girls at the same time. They sub-
sequently find out about Craig's
two-timing ways and he's uncere-
moniously dumped. Joey at-
tempts to console Craig by relat-
ing a story from his teenage past
to help ease his stepson's pain.
Presiding over the scene is vet-
eran director Phil Earnshaw,
who'll direct six episodes of the
upcoming third season of De-
grassi: The Next Generation. He
knows the show intimately, hav-
ing been the director of photog-
raphy on the original CBC series
that aired from 1979 until 1986.
He also helmed six episodes in
Season 2.
"It's a lot of fun," says Earn-
shaw. "The cast has its moments
when their focus tends to wan-
der. But, the neatest thing is see-
ing year to year the kids getting
older and more mature. It's neat
to see their progression as actors
and that's certainly true of An-
drea."
It becomes apparent that
Earnshaw has an easy-going
manner with his stable of
teenage actors and the other
crew members. On this partic-
ular day, the set is as relaxed as
it is busy, despite the heat and
the fact production is running
a little behind.
He readily sings the praises
of his young cast, especially
Lewis and her acting abilities.
"She's got a real natural look
on camera and she has a very
animated face," he says.
•••••••
Since graduating from
Grade 12 at St. Mary Catholic
Secondary School in the sum-
mer, Lewis has put her post-
graduation plans in place and
they will lead her to the U.S.
She'll begin studying the arts
at AMDA (American Musical
Theatre and Drama Academy)
in Los Angeles, starting in Jan-
uary.
"It's basically a university for
the arts," says Lewis, who ap-
plied and auditioned in Toron-
to and was subsequently ac-
cepted. Although she plans to
live in Tinseltown, she has no
intention of leaving her Toron-
to-area roots behind.
"I'll be moving and studying
there, but I like living in Toron-
to, so basically I'll be travelling
back and forth," she says,
adding she won't miss the
Canadian winters.
Her education, however,
won't interfere with her contin-
ued shooting on the Degrassi
series, as she'll be finished her
first year of university when
shooting starts up again in
May.
When she's not acting, Lewis
is heavily involved in her other
labours of love -- singing and
songwriting. Of late, she has
released a single she wrote en-
titled 'Never Say Forever'.
"We're currently trying to get
it on radio in September," she
says.
She hopes it will form the basis
of a six- or seven-song EP. To-
ward that end, she's looking for a
producer in either Toronto or in
the U.S. who's interested in tak-
ing on the project.

EVENT 2003
Beware the peepers If you like to be
scared, Jeepers
Creepers 2 may be
just the ticket. At
left, two teens await-
their fate at the
hands of the Creep-
er, a supernatural
creature looking for
its next meal. With
luck, they will fare
better than the
adults who were
killed off one by one.
Shoestring group
preparing for
first production
of 30th season
DDUURRHHAAMM —— The Durham
Shoestring Performers, set to
start its 30th season, holds au-
ditions Sept. 3 for its first
show.
The community theatre is
producing 'Patience' by Jason
Sherman, one of Canada's
foremost contemporary play-
wrights, from Nov. 7 to 15. The
play centres on the worst day
in the life of Reuben Field, a
cellphone dealer who has to
determine what's happening
to him and how to fix it. The
fast-paced script is said to
provide strong acting chal-
lenges for the ensemble cast.
The play features three
women -- Reuben's wife, their
friend Sarah, both in the late
30s to early 50s, and a younger
friend, late teens or early 20s,
who must be able to play some
jazz piano.
There are also three men, all
in the late 30s to early 50s.
Most roles involve playing
multiple characters.
Auditions are at 7:30 p.m. in
the Arts Resource Centre, 45
Queen St., behind City Hall in
Oshawa. Rehearsals start
after casting.
Director Carolyn Wilson in-
vites anyone interested in act-
ing or production work to at-
tend the audition. It's recom-
mended actors borrow a script
for advance reading by calling
905-725-9256 or e-mailing
dsp@durhamshoestring.org.
Fur ther details about the
play can be found at
www.durhamshoestring.org.
