The value of building permits across Durham increased signif- icantly for January, February and March this year: A 52.3 per cent increase, or $312.6 million, from the same time in 2002, at $205.3 million. Durham led the way in build- ing activity compared to other regions in the GTA for those three months. Peel was the only other region with an increase in building permits, at 24.6 per cent. Durham officials attribute the building-permit increase to large growth in the commercial sector. “Businesses like to invest here,” said Nestor Chornobay, director of strategic planning for Durham Region. A number of factors make Durham a great place for com- mercial development Mr. Chornobay said. Durham Region hopes to have all eight municipalities on the new household compost pickup and disposal system in 2004. It is already up and running in Uxbridge, Brock, Scugog and Clarington. Those municipalities opted to have the Region take over responsibility for garbage collection when Durham’s inte- grated waste management plan was introduced earlier this year. Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa and Whitby each have their own col- lection system and have not yet switched to the new system, which includes separate pickup of food scraps, which are then taken to a compost facility and turned into soil enhancer. In May, those four municipalities were given 60 days to decide whether to turn collection re- sponsibilities over to Durham or to retain them. But Pickering council wasn’t ready to consider the question July 28 because it didn’t have all the final figures to determine the financial impact of the decision, said Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner in an interview. Sam McLaughlin revealed an intimate and personal side of the legendary Os- hawa philanthropist to a captivated crowd at Park- wood this past Monday. On McLaughlin Day, the civic holiday named in Oshawa in honour of her famous relative, Jocelyn Shaw spoke of her grand- father’s love of children and ability to recite poet- ry at the drop of a hat. Mrs. Shaw detailed Col. Sam’s upbringing and later life to the best of her recollection, mentioning the “rib-crushing bear hugs” the Colonel would often bestow upon her and her cousins. She was speaking at the unveiling of an Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque, commemorating the na- tional historic signifi- cance of the Oshawa en- trepreneur, most famous for helping found what later became General Mo- tors of Canada. Joining Mrs. Shaw in honouring Col. McLaugh- lin were Dr. Richard Alway, chairman of the Historic Sites and Monu- ments Board of Canada; Oshawa Mayor Nancy Di- amond; Patricia O’Neill, president of the Park- wood Foundation; Miriam Christie, manager of Gov- ernment Relations, Gen- eral Motors Canada; and Oshawa MP Ivan Grose. Although the location has not been decided the plaque will be placed on the grounds of Parkwood and incorporated into the walking tour for visitors to view. Mayor Diamond said the plaque is a wonderful way to remember the past. “Col. Sam McLaughlin just represents the essence of our communi- ty,” said the mayor. “And whether it be as an entre- preneur, an industrialist, a philanthropist, or a community and family man, to me he represents us in every way and repre- sents us so well.” Brian Malcolm, execu- tive director of Parkwood, is extremely pleased that the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada decided to place the plaque at Parkwood. “I think it is the right place for the plaque,” said Mr. Malcolm. “McLaughlin Day is something we do every year to celebrate Sam the person and his legacy to Oshawa, but this particu- lar event makes it even more special. We are so pleased all these people came out to enjoy the cer- emony and activities dur- ing the day.” Robert Samuel McL aughlin was born in Enniskillen, north of Bow- manville, in 1871. In his century-long life (he died in 1972) he acquired many nicknames but not one had as lasting an effect as ‘Col. Sam,’ despite his lack of military service. The nickname actually came from his being de- clared an Honourary Colonel of the Ontario County Tank Regiment in 1920. Col. Sam was the son of a successful carriage and sleigh builder, Robert McL aughlin who moved the family to Oshawa in order to be closer to the railway. Col. Sam eventu- ally joined his father’s business and soon had vi- sions of a new mode of transportation - the auto- mobile. After convincing his fa- ther and brother of the potential of his idea Col. Sam tried, unsuccessfully, to produce an all-Canadi- an motor car. He finally reached an agreement with the Buick Motor Car Company to gain the ex- clusive rights to import Buick engines and from there the McLaughlin Mo tor Car Company Lim- ited was formed with Col. Sam at the helm. In 1915, Sam made the same deal with the Chevrolet Motor Compa- ny, where the engines would be used in Canadi- an-made bodies, many of which Sam designed him- self. This deal would even- tually put Sam on the map along with his com- pany, General Motors of Canada. In 1918, Sam sold off his entire business interest to GM but stayed on as pres- ident with his brother as vice-president. Col. McLaughlin’s do- nations can still be appre- ciated in Lakeview Park, the McLaughlin Public Li- brary as well as Lakeridge Health Oshawa among many other items he con- tributed to. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, August 8, 2003 PAGE 3 A/P Help support needy students in our community. Deemed accidental by Durham Regional Police, the in- cident at Kedron Dells Golf Club on Ritson Road North occurred after the man’s golf partner - a 73-year-old Scarborough man - collided with the Pickering man following a shot on the 13th fair- way. The golfer was walking back to the cart when he was knocked to the ground and run over, says Dave Selby, spokesman for Durham Region- al Police. He says the driver “panicked” as a result of the col- lision. “He hit the gas instead of the brake,” he explains. “It appears to be a freak accident.” Two other golfers in the group witnessed the accident and ran to help, adds Mr. Selby. “The other two in the four- some helped lift the cart off,” he says, adding the man was later air-lifted to Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in Toronto, where he was treated for non- life-threatening pelvic injuries. No charges were laid, and po- lice say alcohol was not a factor. First Pro Shopping Centres, who have brought and are bringing in commercial devel- opments to Durham like Wal- Mart in Whitby, Sam’s Club in Pickering and Best Buy in Ajax, say the Region is “a great place for us to do business.” “There are services that haven’t been there for residents and we’ve identified that need,” said Ornella Richichi, director of land development for First Pro, adding Durham has hun- dreds of thousands of residents to service. “And there’s a lot of unchart- ed territory that needs to be dealt with and experienced in other parts of Durham that will grow tremendously in the fu- ture” like the 407-link area, Ms. Richichi said. The non-residential sector made up 42 per cent of Durham’s total building permit value. The rest were residential permits, which increased mod- erately from $160.3 million for the first three months of 2002 to $180.8 million in 2003. Ninety-seven per cent of that was for new construction, while the rest was for renovations and additions. The city of Pickering showed the biggest permit increase, up from $5.9 million in 2002 to $12 million in 2003 - a 103 per cent increase. Clarington was second with a 68.8 per cent increase, fol- lowed by Whitby at 52.7 per cent. “This is all planned growth within the area designated for growth,” assured Mr. Chornobay. “It is contained and appearing where it should be.” brought forward in September after City staff has had the opportunity to work with Miller Waste Systems, which collects Pickering’s garbage, in estimating difference in costs for either scenario, he said. “Even if we delay until September, it (organic waste collec- tion) can still be done next year. Miller has said it may take up to six months to acquire a truck (to col- lect the waste), which will take us to the end of March at the e xtreme,” Coun. Brenner said. The organic waste, such as food leftovers including meat scraps, vegetables and dairy, are collected alongside regular garbage using a special garbage truck that has a split back with two compart- ments; one side for regular trash and one for compost. At the council meeting, Pickering Ajax Citizens Together for the Envi- ronment chairman David Steele urged councillors not to rush into composting. His group is willing to wait four or five months into 2004 if it means the proper public education and equip- ment are in place. “I prefer the system to be kept in Pickering,” Mr. Steele added. “I’m not a believer in big government. You usually get big decisions with little input.” Miller Waste manager Blair McArthur also encouraged council to think of keeping the responsibili- ty locally. “I think you’d have it more quickly if the collection was kept local,” he said. “You’re smaller, faster and more able.” The City also has a good working relationship with his staff, he added. While it will take at least 18 months to build a permanent Pickering composting facility on Squires Beach Road, Mr. McArthur said Miller is working with another com- pany with a competitive rate to han- dle the City’s organics in the inter- im. Coun. Brenner said afterwards he personally doesn’t care who comes to the curb as long as organic collec- tion gets done next year. For the taxpayer, the only difference would mean transferring the expense from the local portion of their tax bill to the regional portion. But Pickering will have to decide how much in extra costs it’s willing to absorb when it comes to choice of composting containers, if it chooses a different collection model from the one adopted by the Region, he said. Durham Region provides up to $20 per household compost bin from its waste reserves for any municipality that adopts curbside composting. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, August 8, 2003 PAGE 5 P OR (416) 750-0472 (905) 831-6464 PETER’S ACADEMY OF DEFENSIVE DRIVING ONLY Summer SpecialSummer Special MAXIMUM INSURANCE SAVINGS $$275275.00.00 PLUS GSTMinistry Approved Driver Education Course • 25 Hours in an MTO approved classroom • 15 private in-car lesson on automatic •FREE pick-up at home • Courses start every week • Defensive driving instruction • FREE progress report card • EARLIER ROAD TEST NEW LOCATION 1050 BROCK ROAD UNIT # 10 PICKERING, ON L1W 3X4 PICKERING LOCATION HOURS: 7 DAYS A WEEK 10 AM - 10 PMCALL NOW! A good number of peo- ple who have travelled to the town have come upon re- membrances of him or may even have visited the museum dedicated to his memory. Chances are good too that many Durham readers know that shagadelic guy Austin Powers, aka Mike Meyers, is from Scarborough and if they don't, a newly-named street in his honour will serve as a reminder. Remembering outstanding Canadians, and recognizing the impact they have made on our society or our cultural con- science, is important to understanding who we, as a nation, are. If we do not cherish and preserve our heritage, who will? A lesser-known fact is another Canadian icon, Group of Seven inspiration, naturalist and painter, Tom Thomson was born in the hamlet of Claremont Aug. 5, 1877. True, he only re- mained there two months after his birth before his family moved to Leith, Ont. He spent most of his life between the Owen Sound area and Toronto with a short stint in the Unit- ed States. But his family roots were firmly planted in the hamlet and the fact a Canadian of such significance was born in Claremont certainly must be worthy of some note for those who visit, and those who reside, there. If Michael Skretteberg has his way, that will come to pass. He thinks Pickering should rename Claremont Neighbour- hood Park after the late artist and designate a street to his memory. "It always perplexed me how Claremont is the birthplace of Tom Thomson yet there's nothing here to honour him," says the Claremont resident. The request has gone to Pickering council for considera- tion. It, in turn, has handed over the request to staff to take to the public for input. Mr. Skretteberg thinks that's a fine idea because he's confident there will be lots of support from groups like the PineRidge Arts Council and the Pickering Historical Society, which have been very receptive to the idea already. In fact, the historical society has offered to help him approach the Province to get a historical plaque erected. Perhaps the questions are why did it take close to a centu- ry for someone to come up with the idea of commemorating the birthplace of a citizen of such significance, and how long will it take us to rectify the oversight. Family's tale raises immigration questions TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: The recent article about the refugee seekers from Costa Rica makes them appear as pioneers or heroes. In my opinion they are circumventing the sys- tem. They admit preferring Switzer- land but say the process was slow so they chose Canada because they knew of a "faster and shorter process", pre- sumably through refugee status. Is this fair to people attempting to become legitimate landed immigrants? Surely Mrs. Schellenburg is assisting them in circumventing the system by telling them to wait before claiming refugee status and Mr. Hernandez is doing the same by advising that if the are refused refugee status, they can ap- peal and it will take two to three years to resolve. Nothing beats the tribal barbecue ritual Perhaps one needs to suffer through five long months of unforgiving, relentless cold to truly appreciate summer. It stands to reason after a half-year of penance, spent indoors, with only the hum- ming glow of television and the warmth of good books, friends and family, we Canadians can go a little overboard when the warmer months finally arrive. We are beset by rituals... that first screaming plunge into the icy waters of a local lake, men getting starry- eyed as they pull their riding mowers out for that first cut of the season and women tuning the world out as they busy themselves gardening. Ta ke the bumper to bumper three- and-a-half hour drive to the cottage. What about lane reductions or out- right road closures on a nightly basis that seem to coincide with whatever time it is that you most need to use the street or highway. This can only be one thing... summer in Canada! One of the rites we men hold dear- est is (of course) the barbecue. Just the mention of the word is like a mantra or magical incantation, as even the most hopeless man in the kitchen knows his way around the 'cue.' Standing 'round while meat cooks slowly over the grill, having a beer and talking about as little as hu- manly possible is a custom we hold close to over the long winter months. What we have to be mindful of though is 'the dread' that slowly builds up as August wanes and Sep- tember returns, where we often go into pre-winter mode early. There is winter enough to go around without ushering it in months in advance. Summer is a state of mind and is around as long as the good weather holds (and that can sometimes ex- tend well into October). We owe it to ourselves to milk the season for all it is worth. Summer boils down to cramming as many activities in and spending as much time outdoors as humanly possible. It is precisely this juggling act (which must look like borderline insanity to the outsider) which we most pride ourselves in. It's like an annual contest where he/she that can pack the most in wins. Only by living the other half of the year, the dark days and cold nights, can one truly come to appreciate what summer means to us here in the Great White North. Tim Logan is a 30-year-old writer who lives in Solina. In his spare time he is an avid mountaineer. You know it’s summer when... This is the theory compelling Nancy Doughty, 27, to seek out the history of the old Whitby Mental Health Centre, built during the First World War on the shore of Lake Ontario. She is in the process of writing a book on the subject - focusing on the first half of the Twentieth Century - uncov- ering tales of happiness, hope, sorrow and regret. “It’s a mysterious place... It has a really interesting history,” Ms. Doughty explains. “But the aver- age Ontarian doesn’t know much about it.” Details, such as how the facility was used as a soldier’s infirmary in 1917 captivate Ms. Doughty, who adds with excitement: “The soldiers loved it there... It was like a big village... They didn’t want to leave.” It was originally a 640-acre site, she says, with gardens and a rail- road track leading to it. Her inspiration came while working at and visiting similar fa- cilities in Boston, where stories of real people filled the rooms and retold themselves through the knowledge of employees and fami- ly members. She also read a book, ‘Graceful- ly Insane: The Rise and Fall of America’s Premier Mental Hospi- tal,’ by Alex Beam. Her love of the book sealed the deal. “I read it, and I thought, I want to do this for Whitby Psych,” says Ms. Doughty. “And I’m really en- joying it.” The book will focus on the lives of patients and staff, and she wants to talk to anyone with a story. “I want to get the stories out there... I’m really trying to get peo- ple involved who were part of the history,” Ms. Doughty insists, adding mental health has come a long way since the hospital was built. “Overall, psychiatric hospitals are not bad... They have really nice care now... For Whitby it’s some- thing to be proud of.” Rumours the old site is going to be torn down worry her. In fact, many Port Whitby residents have been suggesting it should be des- ignated as a heritage site. She hopes to release the book in time for the hospital’s 85th an- niversary in October 2004. Al- though the project has moved along steadily since she began, it takes quite a bit of work. Spend some time volunteering - it’s good for you PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG —— It doesn’t take much time to make a difference in someone’s life. Community Nursing Home Pickering is looking for volun- teers for their one-to-one visit- ing program. “It is the perfect volunteer ex- perience for people who don’t have extra time in their lives to volunteer,” says Jennifer Ted- ford, co-ordinator of volunteers. “We ask volunteers to visit their resident or residents once a week for approximately one hour.” Volunteers are matched with residents to go for a walk in the gardens, to attend recreational programs, to reminisce about the past or whatever the resi- dent wants to do. Many of the volunteers report having the opportunity has been one of the most unique and rewarding experiences in their lives, says Ms. Tedford. The history and experience the residents possess are a wonder- ful gift to anyone willing to take the time to listen. “Unfortunately some of our families are not able to be as ac- tive in the lives of our residents as they would like,” says Ms. Tedford. “In some cases the one-to-one visitor is the only company the resident may re- ceive during the week.” Volunteers must complete an application form, complete an interview process, have two ref- erences checked, provide a neg- ative two-step tuberculin skin test, have a police check and successfully complete the orien- tation. All volunteers are asked to make a six-month commit- ment. For more information, call Ms. Tedford at 905-831-2522, ext. 297 or e-mail jtedford@communitylifecare.on .ca. With less than two months left before the reg- istration deadline, 10 Durham residents have signed up as school trustee candidates for the Nov. 10 vote. Two weeks ago there were four hopefuls. Things have heated up in south Ajax, especially, where three candidates are now vying for the Wards 3 and 4 seat on the Durham District School Board. They are James Harvey, Lisa Hill and Ria Ramnar- ine. The incumbent for the south Ajax seat, Whitby resident Melinda Crawford, is a Whitby council candi- date in this election. The number of Oshawa candidates for both boards has doubled from two to four in the last two weeks. At the public board, Jason Irani has joined incumbent Kathleen Hopper in the race for one of the three seats. A familiar face has joined the Durham Catholic Dis- trict School Board trustee race in Oshawa. Fred Jones, the board’s incum- bent in north Durham, is registered along with long- time board representative Joe Corey. Mr. Jones previ- ously represented Oshawa Catholic ratepayers. Oshawa residents elect two Catholic trustees. Elizabeth Roy has thrown her hat in the public board trustee race in Whit- by, which now sports three candidates. A two-term trustee, Ms. Roy is also the two-term chairman of the Durham District School Board. Also in the Whitby public board race are John Dolstra and Scott Temple- ton. There are as yet no can- didates in Pickering, Uxbridge, Scugog, Brock and north Ajax (Wards 1 and 2). The registration deadline is Sept. 26. Now is an excellent time to consider the addition of a tree to enhance your front or backyard. Planting a tree is your legacy to the future as well as a benef icial contribution to a healthier environment. Trees in the home landscape can be utilized in many ways: to frame a focal point, to provide shade, to fill in gaps and to provide privacy. Trees also trap dust and pollutants from the air, filter out noise and lower indoor house temperatures by blocking the sun’s heat when planted close to the house. Trees also provide a neighbourhood feel in new subdivisions and can be easily incorporated in either the front yard or the backyard. When planting trees in the front yard incorporate a garden bed around the tree to give your yard a finished look. In the backyard, position the tree to provide privacy between houses and add visual interest both indoors and out. Some suggestions for trees in the home landscape include the following: 1. Maple trees. These are available in different varieties such as Japanese maples to the deep red fall colour of Red Sunset maple to the towering beauty of a Sugar maple; 2. ‘Ivory Silk’ Lilac. A medium sized tree planted for the beauty and fragrance of cream blooms, which appear after the flowering shrub of lilacs; 3. ‘Chanticleer’ Pear. A tree used for ornamental purposes (it does not produce fruit), with an excellent display of white flowers in early spring; 4. Locust trees. These trees, specif ically ‘Sunburst’ and ‘Skyline’, provide dappled filtered shade and yellow fall colour; and 5. Pagoda Dogwood. One of the best small, four-season-interest trees, the Pagoda provides cream blooms, berries for the birds and unusual horizontal branching and red/burgundy fall colour. It works in a variety of home landscaping settings. Add a tree to your landscape to enjoy the beauty now and leave a legacy to the future. Until our next column, sit back and enjoy the vision of your garden. 7,500 SQ. FT. Donelle, Horticulturist, Pine Ridge Garden Gallery Cleaning up can be less of a chore with some tips from the experts. Here are some time-saving and practical tips guaranteed to wipe away all your cleaning hassles: • Before you begin, prepare one bucket of supplies to bring with you to every room. Try to cut down on products by using multi-purpose cleansers and all-in- one cleaning tools. Also, as a part of your prep, bring a garbage bag with you to throw out any waste you find along the way. • When removing dust from areas like bedrooms and family rooms, start at the top. Dust falls downward, so vacuum and dust crevices and corners starting at the very top of the room and work your way to the bottom. Remember to dust lamps, pictures and furniture or anything else that might collect dust. • Make cleansers do the bulk of the cleaning for you. Spray down high- grime areas beforehand and let the cleaners take action before you begin to scrub, especially on areas like ovens and microwaves that tend to have a lot of build-up. After letting the area soak, wipe the residue off. • For big household jobs that require serious scrubbing, such as tubs and floors, look for comfortable cleaning tools to help do the work. • Clean up the tools that helped you clean up. Rinse out the bucket and wash your brushes and other tools at the end of your cleaning. With a little planning, the right tools and these time-saving tips, tackling those tough cleaning projects can be a cinch. When the program first began in May, Ross MacEachern, manager of environmental health for Durham, said the north was not a hot zone for the virus. “Predominately the activity we’ve identified to this date... the heavy mosquitoes and the virus has been south of Taunton Road,” he said in May. “I don’t consider the rural areas to be high-virus activity zones.” But three WNV-positive crows have been found in Scugog Town- ship: two in Blackstock and the lat- est in Nestleton just last week. One more was found in Clarington, bringing the total to four in Durham Region. The catchbasins in Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock townships were larvicided during July, said Glen- dene Collins, a spokesman for the Durham Region health department. “Our original plan was to go by the activity we saw in 2002,” she said. “As a result, there wasn’t a lot of West Nile concern in the north... but after we reviewed the program, we decided it wouldn’t be a big stretch to expand the program.” The mosquitoes that normally carry West Nile, the culix pipiens (common house mosquito), usually live in urban catchbasins, Mr. MacEachern said. To date, Durham has submitted around 40 birds - mostly crows and blue jays - to the Canadian Co-operative Wildlife Health Centre in Guelph for testing. Other regions in the GTA have varying methods of dealing with the virus, which killed 18 people, and saw 86 probable and 309 confirmed positive birds in Ontario found last year. Yo rk Region has larvicided catch- basins everywhere, said Dr. Hanif Kassam, York’s associate medical of- ficer of health. “We had new info this year that said we should be focusing on the northern region,” he said of places like Newmarket and Mount Albert, which are very close to Uxbridge Township. “Durham did not have as much significant activity as us.” Yo rk Region currently has seven WNV-positive birds. To ronto, with one WNV-positive bird, is larviciding everywhere, while Peel and Halton regions, each with only one WNV-positive bird, are only larviciding their urban areas. Nor thumberland County is not lar- viciding at all. WNV was first detected in Canada in 2001, when 12 health unit areas in Ontario found evidence of the virus in birds and/or mosquitoes. The virus is spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito, while mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. For more information on West Nile virus and Durham’s larviciding pro- grams, visit its Web site at www.re- gion.durham.on.ca or call the health department at 905-723-8521. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 8, 2003 PAGE 13 P Located In The Rear Of LA-Z-BOY Furniture Galleries 900 Champlain Ave., Oshawa 1-800-642-4561 (905) 723-5211 The Area’s The Area’s Largest S e lection Largest Selection o f Ho w a r d Mi ller of Howard Miller Clocks!! BByy AAlleexxiiss SScciiuukk Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM ––––The Elks are com- ing to a community near you. With 28,000 members across Canada, the Elks are preparing to open a lodge in Whitby next year. The Pineridge Elks Lodge, as it will be called, is the only Elks lodge between the Picton and Kitchener corridor. According to construction plans the lodge should be built and ready to go by the beginning of Summer 2004 Founded in 1912, the charita- ble organization works closely in communities to help with volun- teers and to provide aid to chari- ty. Bruce Norton, membership chairman for the new lodge, has worked alongside many charities in his lifetime but says the Elks organization was just the charity he was looking for. “It is totally Canadian,” said Mr. Norton. “Everything we need we get right here in Canada. It is Canadians looking after Canadi- ans.” Elks in each province have typ- ically chosen one charity or orga- nization to support. In Ontario, much of the money raised by the Elks is given to Ontario VOICE, an organization which helps deaf children develop their ability to listen and speak. Richard Solomon, the Execu- tive Director of Ontario VOICE says that the Elks support is “critical to the creation and maintenance of services” at On- tario VOICE. “[The Elks are the] principal supporter of VOICES Auditory-Verbal therapy pro- gram,” said Mr. Solomon. The decision to support On- tario VOICE began more than ten years ago with the Elks chap- ter in North Bay. Local parents began support- ing the local camp for deaf chil- dren and ever since then the Elks have taken their cause to the provincial and even national levels. According to Mr. Norton, the new Durham Chapter of Elks will continue with the tradition of supporting Ontario VOICE. Elks membership is open to both men and women and mem- bers must be 19 years of age or older to join. The Elks of Canada re-wrote its constitution in 1998 to incor- porate women. The Durham chapter already has 40 members and according to Mr. Norton the group is look- ing “to get as many people as they can.” “Looking after kids is para- mount,” said Mr. Norton. “The more people we have the easier it will be to get the word out.” The group will be getting under way in September and have big plans in the work to celebrate hearing month in May 2004. Great weather means more fresh veggies and fruits BByy SShheelllleeyy JJoorrddaann Special to This Week UUXXBBRRIIDDGGEE –––– Ideal weather con- ditions mean many crops will be larger than last year in Durham Region. While spring conditions seemed to drag on longer than usual, most crops are doing well, accord- ing to Jennifer Rynard, promo- tions director for the Durham Farm Fresh Association. “Raspberries are on right now, as are potatoes, carrots, almost everything is on schedule,” says Ms. Rynard, adding there is one exception. “Corn is going to be a little later this year, and many farmers were hoping to have it ready for the long weekend, but it probably won’t be ready until next week for farmers in Uxbridge and Durham,” she said. Corn producers are compen- sating by bringing the product in from areas farther south, to have it available for customers at road- side stands. Rod McKay, co-owner of Willow Tree Farm near Utica, says rain has been a bit scarce lately, but he’s happy with his crop this year. He hired a number of workers for harvest, including eight stu- dents. “We’ve got a full line of produce. Beans, peas, corn, onions and potatoes. Apples will be starting in 10 days,” said Mr. McKay. According to Foodland On- tario, orchards are producing 10 per cent more fruit this year be- cause of ideal weather conditions at blossom time. Bumper peach, plum, and nectarine crops will hit stores within the next week and will be available into September. Local grocery stores are al- ready passing savings off to the customer. Angela Frain, assistant pro- duce manager of Reid’s Indepen- dent Grocery Store in Port Perry, says lettuce, broccoli, and pota- toes have dropped in price. “The quality has been really good so far,” says Ms. Frain. “We’ve had the right amount of rain and sunshine. The weather would have to change dramatical- ly for crops to be affected now.” Ms. Frain said it’s possible ten- der fruits could be affected by hailstorms or exceedingly large amounts of rain, but at this point in summer, most crops have passed vulnerable stages of growth. “I encourage everyone to get out and support their local grow- ers,” said Ms. Rynard. “We’re so blessed to have fruits and vegeta- bles in our own backyard.” www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 8, 2003 PAGE 19 A/P If you don’t receive one please call 905-683-5117 To wn of Ajax Recreation Services Fall 2003 Brochure Home Delivery to Ajax Residents Wednesday August 13th. putting our energy to good use www.opg.com ONTARIO POWER GENERATION is proud to pay tribute to the outstanding accomplishments of our skilled and committed employees. Each year, we honour a select group with The Power Within Achievement Awards which recognize their contributions to the company in nine diverse categories. The 23-year-old Ajax woman survived a cull at the Canadian Idol compe- tition after the contes- tants performed live for the first time in Toronto Monday night. As a result, Alexis is in the final group of eight and due to sing live on television again this Mon- day, a show with a Mo- town theme. Eleven contestants re- mained for the Aug. 4, 'Canadian Hits' episode of the program, with Alexis singing Celine Dion's, 'If You Asked Me To.' Three were eliminated after fan voting, and while two of the contestants were a fairly easy choice, the third proved a tough call. It came down to Alexis and Karen-Lee Batten from British Columbia. It was Alexis' second narrow escape: she was chosen as a Wild Card competitor on the previ- ous show, initially not making the cut, but sur- viving to sing again thanks to her fans. The contestants are all off limits to media until they have been eliminated from Canadian Idol. Patterned after Ameri- can Idol, the show fea- tures singers performing in front of a panel of judges. However it's the voting television viewer who decides who stays and who goes. Canadian Idol began with thou- sands of hopefuls audi- tioning for a spot. The f ield was narrowed to 143, including Alexis and fel- low Ajacian Nicole Sin- clair, who made the top 30 before being eliminated. You can watch Alexis perform on the Aug. 11 show at 8 p.m. on CTV. A.J. Have a ‘Freaky Friday’ Still staying alive Ajax’s own Toya Alexis hung on to a spot on Canadian Idol this week. She has beat the odds to outlast thousands of hopefuls to remain as one of eight finalists on the show. Jamie Lee Curtis (left), as Dr. Tess Coleman, gets her psyche mixed up with daughter, Anna’s, (Lindsay Lohan) in the remake of ‘Freaky Friday.’ AAJJAAXX ——The Ajax Strikers under-9 boys' select team won the recent Ajax Soccer Club Tournament in convincing fash- ion -- and how. The boys completely shut out the opposition, notching 19 goals in six games while keeping their opponents off the scoreboard. The Strikers started their six- game series with a 2-0 win over the Wexford Xtreme, and fol- lowed up by demolishing the Whitby Wolverines 7-0. In Game 3, the boys again won big in de- feating the Richmond Hill Raiders 6-0. The rest of the way was a bit tougher. The Strikers' next victim was the Glen Shields Sun Devils 1, whom they defeated in the quar- terfinals by a 2-0 count. In the semifinal against the Kitchener Spirit, the Strikers' lone goal was all they needed in a 1-0 victory. The final saw the boys meet a team with the same moniker, the Unionville Strikers. However it was the Ajax squad that struck for the only goal of the game, as they celebrated the home turf tourney win. Team members are Scott Read, Le Shaun Young, Kyle Crichton, Jordano Medoro, Luca Gasparotto, Nicolas Palmer, Darien Pyle, Maleik De Freitas, Tony Ruber, Xavier Anderson- Scott, Matthew Guerriero, Lequane Gray and Jeffrey Heard. Dario Gasparotto coaches the team, assisted by Stephanie Brooks. Michelle Gasparotto is the manager. Tennis celebration Saturday will recall 70s era BByy MMiikkee RRuuttaa Staff Writer PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG --—— Who says tennis is a sport on the decline? Not the roughly 650 people who make up the Glendale Tennis Club, celebrating its 25th an- niversary this year. The four-court, members-only club is located in David Farr Memorial Park near Glenanna and Dixie roads. When it began, a Swedish guy named Bjorn Borg was winning his third straight Wimbledon title with a wooden racket. Tennis freak Mary Grzesik was giving up the game around that time. Marriage, family, you know, tennis kind of slipped away. Now she's back with a vengeance and president of per- haps the largest club in the re- gion. "When I stopped, it was like, white balls and wooden rackets," she says. "Now it's a power game. Some purists wish it would go back." Tennis seems to rise and fall in popularity based on who's big in the game at the time. But there's been no waning interest at Glen- dale, which Grzesik says has a "magic chemistry" that's hard to describe. Members play to win, but a good time doesn't depend on it. "It's not do or die," she says. "On the whole, I think we have fun, from the top level (players) to the bottom. We have a good group of people." Grzesik's son, also a tennis player, says she's addicted to the game. She admits it. "I think it's one of the few sports that families can play to- gether," she says, noting a family membership costs $40. "There's no league, no sport where fami- lies can play together." "It was a different time; tennis was huge then," says Mike Mc- Farland, the club's first presi- dent. The club started with 300 to 400 members, and he's not sur- prised the membership has grown and stayed stable. "It's part of the community," says McFarland. "That park di- vides the community, so it does- n't matter if you're coming from the north or the south, people migrate to the park." Early members had a lot in common. Most were young fami- lies who had recently bought their first house. It wasn't un- usual then for couples to bring the baby to the court, minded while they played. McFarland credits a former member who was there at the beginning, Mike Koci, a former champion in Czechoslovakia, who taught the juniors for free. It was the beginning of a strong junior program that continues to this day. Judy Scott-Jacobs has been a member for all but one of Glen- dale's 25 years and heads the club's anniversary party sub- committee. The fun is tomorrow night at the West Shore Com- munity Centre, and roughly 120 people are expected. "We're calling it Saturday Night Fever, which was the big movie in 1978 when we were formed," says Scott-Jacobs. She's reluctant to give too much away as a few surprises are in store. Some local digni- taries are due to attend, and special service awards will be handed out. Scott-Jacobs agrees Glendale is made up of a good group of folks, and has been since its in- ception. "I think we're very fortunate that way, plus we've always had a strong executive," she says. As well, she says the spirit of volunteerism is alive and thriv- ing at the club, noting, "There are key people at Glendale who have given and given over the years." Grzesik says the club's com- petitive A, B and C teams have had a lot of success in the Durham league in recent years. The Glendale Awards Program (GAP) is run for five weeks every year, with youngsters advancing from level to level. There's also a twice-weekly round robin for younger members. Young players are important at Glendale. "It's called building the club," says Grzesik. "We can't ignore the juniors because they're the future of our club."
