PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ––––Christi Wright, of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School, dances up a storm with fellow students during the
Durham Catholic District School Board’s third annual Folkdance Jamboree at Ajax’s Notre Dame Catholic Secondary
School this week. The jamboree brought together 11 Catholic schools from across Durham Region with approximately
40 children each providing a dancing showcase.

DDUURRHHAAMM ––––Ganesh Raghu-
nauth, accused of poisoning his
pregnant wife, smirked in court
as his father scolded him, calling
him “a sick man” and “a rogue.”
Budhayshwar “Bud” Raghu-
nauth, a retired school headmas-
ter who lives in Guyana, testified
as a defence witness at his son’s
first-degree murder trial
Wednesday.
During cross-examination by
prosecutor Cindy Johnston, the
elder Raghunauth, 58, said he
had no clue his son was having
affairs with three other women
prior to the death of his wife He-
moutie (Geeta) Raghunauth, 28.
“It’s more than surprising. It’s
more than a shock to me,” re-
sponded Mr. Raghunauth, after
Ms. Johnston outlined his son’s
admitted infidelities.
“That is very much unaccept-
able; adultery. He’s a rogue and
that’s no joke,” he said as his son
smirked in the prisoner’s dock.
Nor was he aware, he said, his
son was engaged to a New York
woman, Indira Seonarain, three
weeks before his daughter-in-law
died May 14, 2000.
“It’s awful, it should not have
been,” said the white-haired se-
nior Raghunauth.
When told the younger Raghu-
nauth skipped out on the impor-
tant day of Hindu funeral ser-
vices for his dead wife, leaving for
New York to visit his fiance, Bud
Raghunauth again admonished
his son.
“It’s his wife, he should have
been there. He’s a sick man,” he
said in harsh voice.
Ganesh Raghunauth, 32, is ac-
cused of lacing Mrs. Raghu-
nauth’s lunch with sedatives and
then poisoning her with enough
cyanide to kill 64 people.
The testimony of his father,
who was visiting the couple from
Guyana when Mrs. Raghunauth
died, is key to the defence that
she committed suicide.
Ganesh Raghunauth, in his
own testimony last week, told the
court his wife confronted him
with evidence of his relationship

Pickering nuclear officials step closer to firing up idled reactor
BByy KKeeiitthh GGiilllliiggaann
Staff Writer
PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ––––Flicking the switch to
restart the first of the four laid-up
Pickering reactors is a step closer.
Ontario Power Generation is ap-
plying to the Canadian Nuclear
Safety Commission to remove the
guaranteed shutdown state (GSS)
on Unit 4, Pat McNeil, the plant’s
senior vice-president of nuclear
strategy and support, told the
Community Advisory Council on
Tuesday.
“It looks like we’ll do it in the next
few days,” Mr. McNeil said. “It looks
like the milestone is closer and
closer.”
The ‘A’ side of the plant has
been laid-up since 1997. If the
CNSC approves removing the
GSS, Unit 4 should be produc-
ing power by early summer, Mr.
McNeil said.
However, the work is at least
two years behind schedule and
millions of dollars over the orig-
inal estimate.
“Commissioning work is
under way in many areas of the
plant,” he added, noting most of
the requirements imposed by
the CNSC have been completed.
“We expect to apply and we
expect it will be two or three
weeks before they give us the
approval to remove the guaran-
teed shutdown state,” Mr. Mc-
Neil added.
CNSC staff will “watch us as
we bring it on line,” he noted. “It
will be the first time in five years
the ‘A’ side has produced power
rather than draw power.”
OPG’s plan is to return subse-
quent units in six- to nine-
month intervals.
Mr. McNeil added Units 6 and
8 on the ‘B’ side have returned
to service after being shut down
within hours of each other in
early March.
New matching

AAJJAAXX ——Kathy and Bruce
England of Ajax now know
who they can count on as a
friend.
And one of them is Pick-
ering resident Gayle Clow.
The Englands have been
quarantined because of se-
vere acute respiratory syn-
drome (SARS) and turned
to their neighbours for
help. In return, says Mrs.
England, they were given
the cold shoulder.
After learning about the
Englands’ plight, Ms. Clow
is setting up a system
where those in need will be
matched with those willing
to help.
“I was absolutely out-
raged,” Ms. Clow said after
learning about the couple.
“I think it’s a terrible thing
because obviously precau-
tions can be taken.”
She called the Englands
Thursday morning to offer
her support.
“I have the idea to bring
together people in quaran-
tine and people who want
to help,” she added.
Mrs. England has gone
through the 10-day home
quarantine, while her hus-
band spent his time in hos-
pital. A Toronto ambu-
lance driver, he contracted
SARS transporting pa-
tients and while at Scar-
borough Grace Hospital.
Mr. England was re-
leased from Rouge Valley
Ajax and Pickering hospi-
tal Wednesday, but was
still suffering from linger-
ing effects so he’s now
under quarantine at home.
He has to go back for a
checkup Tuesday.
While she was at home
quarantined, Mrs. England
said she sought help from
their neighbours, hoping
they could buy her gro-
ceries, walk their golden re-
triever K.C., and clear their
sidewalk after a snowfall.
But, each time, Mrs.
England said, the neigh-
bours turned her down.
“These are people we
barbecue with in the sum-
mer time. You think they’re
your friends,” she stated,
adding the rejections left
her “devastated”.
She asked one person to
take the dog for a walk and
“they said ‘no’. I hung up
the phone. I was absolutely
destroyed.
“It’s devastating. People
all around you won’t do
anything when you need
it.”
The family is “living in
prison, living in our
prison,” she added. “It’s dif-
ficult enough to live in the
house almost as strangers.
He’s upstairs and I’m
downstairs. We sleep sepa-
rately and we eat separate-
ly.”
Part of the problem may
be the lack of information
getting out or the wrong in-
formation being dissemi-
nated.
“We’re told one thing by
the health department and
hospitals tell us another,”
Mrs. England said, adding
she believes health depart-
ments aren’t providing all
the necessary information.
After the family’s story
was publicized Thursday
she received numerous
calls.
“It’s renewed my faith in
humanity, people helping
other people,” she said.
“Neighbours should be
helping their neighbours.”
She said there are a
number of ways to help
those in similar situations,
such as leaving items or
groceries outside of a
house.
“They don’t have to
come in for tea,” Mrs. Eng-
land added. “People have
given me a great deal of
support with their calls.
You don’t have to be afraid
of it. You just follow some
simple rules.”
Mrs. England called Ms.
Clow’s idea “absolutely in-
credible. It’s the best thing
they can do.
Anyone who wants or
needs help can e-mail Ms.
Clow at gylclow@yahoo.ca.
Leave your name, phone
number and address and if
you need help or want to
help.
That’s what friends are for...

Fill operations cease at Kinsale in north Pickering
Murder trial continues
with Ms. Seonarain on Mother’s Day
morning. He said he later discovered
her unconscious in their Pickering
residence when he returned home
with his father in the afternoon.
The father contradicted his son’s
testimony in a number of areas.
He testified his daughter-in-law
appeared “jovial, happy” on the day
she died and he didn’t notice the cou-
ple arguing at any time during the
morning.
Bud Raghunauth said his son went
to the store and bought Mrs. Raghu-
nauth a bouquet of Mother’s Day
flowers, and later prepared lunch.
“He did the cooking, the meat,
chicken, fish, duck, rice,” he told ju-
rors.
Mrs. Raghunauth “dished (the
food) out for us” and the family, in-
cluding the couple’s infant son, ate
lunch the Crown says was drugged
with sedatives.
“All of us finished together. At least
I had all of mine,” said Mr. Raghu-
nauth.
After lunch, he said he went with
his son and grandson to Sears, where
Ganesh bought a present for his wife,
then to a cricket match in Scarbor-
ough.
Then they came home around 1:30
p.m., expecting to pick up Mrs.
Raghunauth to go have a family por-
trait taken, Mr. Raghunauth testi-
fied.
His son entered the home first, he
testified, and after several moments
called out: “Dad, dad, dad. Come and
see what happened to Geeta.”
He went to the second floor wash-
room in the Beaton Way home and
saw his daughter-in-law lying on the
floor unconscious.
“I lifted her up and braced her
head to my knees and I saw her eyes
open,” Bud Raghunauth said. Mrs.
Raghunauth was still breathing, he
added.
“I was shocked, very emotional.
(Ganesh) was crying. It was very
sad.”
The Crown suggested the elder
Raghunauth was trying to cover for
his son. “You love your son and you
came all the way from Guyana to tes-
tify on his behalf today. You’re trying
to help your son out with your testi-
mony,” said Ms. Johnston.
“No miss,” the witness responded.
“You found out a whole lot of stuff
today that you didn’t know before.
He’s been able to deceive you a long
time... you’ve been duped,” the Crown
said.
“True,” the father replied.
The trial continues Tuesday.
PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ——Tonnes of fill are
no longer being trucked to Kin-
sale.
However, neighbours of the
dump known as ‘Mount Kinsale’
disagree with City officials about
Pickering’s new fill bylaw having
anything to do with it.
“I’m afraid it was close to being
filled up anyway,” said Kees van
der Vecht, president of the Kin-
sale Residents Association. “But
yes, fine, we’re happy it’s
stopped.”
For three years, his group has
fought the fill operation on Hwy.
7, east of Balsam Road.
It prompted Pickering to draft
a bylaw last fall requiring permits
for the placing and removal of fill,
and topsoil disturbance. Council
passed the bylaw Jan. 20 after
deferring it to address concerns
from neighbours that the pro-
posed legislation had too many
loopholes.
Pickering’s effort to stop the
filling was “an attack on two
fronts”, said City Councillor
David Pickles, with the City
launching a lawsuit against
owner James Sabiston for oper-
ating a commercial business in a
residential zone, while also serv-
ing him notice he would have to
apply for a permit under the new
bylaw.
The City lost the case at the
end of March.
City clerk Bruce Taylor said
Mr. Sabiston’s lawyer has since
told the City he would not be
reapplying for a permit and has
ceased all operations on the site.
Mr. Sabiston did not return calls.

Progress for
Durham
companies
Changes paying off with better
results in annual pollutant report
The administrators at Gerdau Ameristeel in Whitby, for-
merly Co-Steel Lasco, were upfront about the problems
the company faced when the Taking Stock-North Amer-
ica Pollutant Releases report first came out.
In the early years of the reports, which were created as part
of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the local steel
company was judged one of the worst polluters in North Amer-
ica. But over the past half-dozen years, Gerdau Ameristeel has
promised to clean up its act and the results have been aston-
ishing. Consider these improvements: for 1997, the company
rated 16th worst among North American companies on the list
for pollutants. By 1998, the company had dropped to 25th and
in 1999 it nearly cracked through the worst 100, hitting 98th.
Well, Gerdau Ameristeel now ranks 275th worst in total pollu-
tant releases among 24,199 companies in North America. The
trends are extremely positive, as administrators predicted
years ago and have since delivered.
The progress dates back to September 1999 when Gerdau
Ameristeel began the process of sending its baghouse dust to a
specialty recycler as opposed to carting it to a licensed off-site
landfill. The improved method is far more environmentally
friendly and delivered an excellent year 2000 rating for the local
company. Officials at the plant expressed confidence the
changes they were making would work and the proof came
through in the ratings, which are a little over two years behind
the current date.
Delphi Canada, the battery plant in Oshawa for General Mo-
tors, moved slightly up the 24,199-strong factory list, sitting at
12 ,13 5th worst in 2000. It had been 14,177th in the previous re-
port. Dominion Colour of Ajax rated 953rd worst in 1998 and
9,16 2nd in 2000, a dramatic improvement.
Ontario ranked third among all U.S. states and Canadian
provinces among the worst polluters, trailing only Texas and
Ohio. Much of the blame for Ontario's high ranking has been
placed on the Province's coal-fired Nanticoke power station on
Lake Erie, which increased its emissions by 3,000 tonnes, a
tremendous amount. That certainly skewed the totals to some
extent.
While the Province must be diligent in its efforts to bring re-
ductions in pollutants at its plants to protect our environment,
it might take a lesson in how to do so from the work being done
at Gerdau Ameristeel. One of the keys to reducing waste pro-
duction at the company was to recycle process wastes, and to
invest in efficient equipment to capture and recycle metal from
old cars and from scrap steel.
Gerdau Ameristeel says it will continue its program to re-
duce its pollutants and, clearly, based on its track record, it will
deliver. That's good for us all.

teacher and my son's student number
was left blank.
I feel this report card does not fully
represent my child's progress in school.
I question the implied assertion that
proper evaluation of a child's progress
in school is outside the regular duties
of a teacher.
Since then, I have sent e-mails to the
following people: Whitby-Ajax MPP
Jim Flaherty; Education Minister Eliz-
abeth Witmer; Ajax trustees Marilyn
Crawford and Melinda Crawford;
Rachel Gencey, president, Durham
unit of the Elementary Teachers' Fed-
eration of Ontario; and Lakeside Pub-
lic School's principal.
To date I have received prompt re-
sponses from only the principal of the
school and Marilyn Crawford. As for
the others, their silence is deafening.

Use common sense
with SARS concerns
When my son woke up with a
runny nose last week, all I
could think was, 'Please
don't get sick. I don't want to take
you anywhere health care is pro-
vided.'
And, I believe a lot of people are
having the same reaction. People
who have been sick enough that
they would normally have gone to
the doctor are saying they aren't
making an appointment out of
fear of severe acute respiratory
syndrome, or SARS. A necessary
visit to a near-empty doctor's of-
fice last week leads me to believe
many people are feeling the same
way -- it would appear people are
suddenly only seeking medical at-
tention when absolutely necessary,
and even ignoring health concerns
for which they probably should see
a doctor.
Certainly SARS is an issue in
the GTA, and absolutely no ques-
tion about it, all necessary steps
should be taken to contain the
mysterious and potentially deadly
illness. But how risky is it for the
general population?
The risk "continues to be low,"
Dr. Colin D'Cunha, Ontario's com-
missioner of public health said last
week.
I tend to believe him. Because
here in Ontario, in the wake of the
Walkerton water tragedy, potential
public health disasters are not
taken lightly. No one will ever for-
get what is widely considered one
of the worst public health crises in
Canadian history, when 2,300 peo-
ple got sick and seven died of E.
coli and campylobacter poisoning
from the municipal water system.
It was not, in retrospect, initially
taken nearly seriously enough.
After that, when something that
could potentially impact the
health of scores of people comes
up in this province, nobody messes
around.
Are we over-reacting? I think so.
I have to believe it is still generally
safe to go to the doctor's office. I
feel confident there's no need to
don a mask before heading out in
public. And I also think it's unnec-
essary to give unusually wide
berth to someone who appears to
have a head cold -- chances are, a
head cold is all they have.
Common sense rules apply. We
should be washing our hands reg-
ularly, but really, when shouldn't
we? Avoiding the so-called SARS
hot spots are absolutely necessary.
And if a doctor indicates you
should be in quarantine, for heav-
en's sake, get in your house and
stay there until you're told it's safe
to come out.
But otherwise, I think the risk
remains quite low. Let's hope it
stays that way.

Ask The Podiatrist
When It Comes To Orthotics, First Impressions Count
Ronald J. Klein
B.Sc., D.P.M.
Podiatrist-Foot
SpecialistAllergies?
NO NEEDLES.
Printed Results, Accurate
I’ve been an orthotic wearer for the past ten years and I need to replace them as they have lost
their stiffness. My last two pair of orthotics were fabricated from a plaster cast impression of my
feet. I now see some offices using other impression techniques such as carbon imprints, semi
weight-bearing foam box impressions and full weight-bearing computer gait analysis. Is there
really a difference?
Dear Reader: Thanks for your letter. We have not addressed orthotics yet in any of our articles.
The term orthotics comes from the Greek word Ortho which means straighten. Thus, an orthotic
will straighten or align a fool deformity.
Orthotics are fitted to the patient’s foot and, when worn in shoes, will redistribute the patient’s
weight on the foot so that their gait is more balanced and abnormal motions are controlled. This
will allow the patient to function more comfortably.
Orthotics are made out of many different types of materials of varying flexibility (soft, semi-
soft or rigid) thicknesses and shock absorbing abilities. We, as podiatrists, take in to account the
age and weight of the patient, the activity the orthotic is to be used
for and the shoe type it is worn in. It is not uncommon for a patient
to have two pairs of orthotics, one pair for athletic shoes and the
other for fashionable shoes. The athletic orthotic is bulkier broader
and more cushioned. It is better suited for wearing when exercising.
The thinner orthotic, usually the newer graphite material, is better
suited for inserting into tighter fitting dress shoes.
The type of medical problems that can be eased by the use of
orthotics are numerous, but must occur as a result of a foot that has a weaker arch (flatter
foot) causing the foot to pronate or roll into the arch. This type of motion can lead to arch
pain, shin splints, planter fascitis, knee, hip and lower back pain, to name a few. The
impression taking technique, like the foundation of a house is most important to achieving a
positive orthotic result. The preferred method and the one that I use in my office is to take a
plaster NON WEIGHT-BEARING cast of the patient’s foot. This will give the exact position
before it has collapsed. Avoid foam box impressions as they collapse the arch somewhat and it
is more difficult to achieve the neutral position. Don’t be fooled by the high tech illusion of
the computerized gait analysis. This looks state-off-the-art but again the arch is collapsed and
weight bearing.
No one in the health profession sees more feet than a podiatrist and therefore no one is
better trained to treat them. Many other professionals, as well as retailers, are “selling”
orthotics. Know to ask the right questions, including what impression technique is used. The
practitioner prescribing orthotics must possess the following qualities:
1. The practitioner must have a detailed understanding of the fabrication foot orthotics from
start to finish and must understand how errors in the cast can affect the shape and function of
the orthotic.
2. The practitioner must be able to treat the patient as an entirely, not just the foot.
3. Finally, and most importantly, the practitioner must understand the biomechanics of the
lower extremity and how to adjust or modify the orthotic after it is dispensed.
While attending a biomechanical seminar in Montreal last October, a study was presented
explaining the merits and long term benefits of a plaster cast impression. The percentages of
relief of symptoms realized by the patient with orthotics done from a plaster cast out weighed
the results achieved with a foam box impression or computer imagery.
Orthotics, although not covered by OHIP, are usually covered by most extended health care
plans. Know the restrictions of your plan. Some may only pay when a plaster cast it taken.
Other plans may only cover the cost of the treatment if it is provided by a podiatrist. If you are
unsure about the quality of care, make some phone calls. Most podiatry offices will be more
then helpful in explaining their office policy with regards to orthotics.
If you have a specific question you would like answered or a topic you want addressed,
send it to ask the podiatrist c/o The News Advertiser.

WE ARE HERE
Has gravity got you down? Do you need a lift or has
Mother Nature not been as generous to you as you
would like her to be?
Child bearing, weight loss or just plain didn’t get any,
are all contributing factors to having smaller breasts.
Sure, now a days there are Miracle bras, water bras and
illusions (boobs in a box) and let us not forget the old
standby’s duct tape and Kleenex tissues. But what
happens to our self-esteem and silhouette when all is
removed? Back to undressing in the dark. Which can
really affect our own well being.
Breast augmentation is a personal choice for most
women who have experienced any of the above. Some
women experience having one breast larger than the
other which is easily remedied with implants. Implants
will allow you to have more saline solution infiltrated
into the smaller breast, which will make the breasts
more symmetrical. Other women have lost breast tissue
and look very saggy. They believe their only option is to
have a breast lift, which leaves large visible scars. An
appropriate size implant placed in the pocket can give
you an illusion of a lift with a small discreetly hidden
incision.
There are so many case scenarios to mention at this
time but if you would like to learn more about this #1
aesthetic procedure, you may call 1-800-390-5611 to

PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ——When trou-
ble comes to a family in the
country, neighbours pitch
in. And how.
Kirsty McGeown has
lived in the country much
of her life. But the Picker-
ing resident was still im-
pressed with the aid and
offers of help that have
come in since a $250,000
fire March 30.
The blaze destroyed a
large barn/riding arena at
3290 Concession 7 near
Kinsale, including two
apartments on the upper
level of the structure. Ms.
McGeown and her family
of four lived in one unit
while a couple lived in the
second. No one was in-
jured, and the roughly 25
horses kept in the barn
were outside at the time.
However, the McGeown
family’s pet cat, Moo, was
killed.
Neighbours immediately
came to the McGeown’s
aid, and she noted the
phone hasn’t stopped ring-
ing and people are showing
up all the time.
“It’s wonderful to see
people care,” said Ms. Mc-
Geown. “We had a dairy
farmer show up with a
truckload of hay. We had
horse trailers lined up
down the road with people
saying, ‘I can take five
horses’.”
There was no warning in
the early stages of the fire,
said Ms. McGeown, noting
the smoke alarm did not
sound.
“There was no smoke or
anything in the apartment,
no smell even,” she said.
The first warning came
when her five-year-old son
Dylan heard someone
screaming, ‘call 911’. Even
then Ms. McGeown’s hus-
band, Alan Eadie, as-
sumed someone had fallen
off a horse during a riding
lesson. They then heard
fellow tenant Claudio
Munoz, who runs the sta-
ble, yelling that everyone
should get out.
Ms. McGeown, her
mother-in-law, Mr. Eadie
and Dylan were upstairs at
the time, their means of es-
cape cut off by a flaming
doorway. Mr. Munoz at-
tacked the fire from one
side with a garden hose,
while Mr. Eadie emptied a
fire extinguisher on it from
the other. Ms. McGeown
said she wrapped a blan-
ket around Dylan and her-
self and everyone made it
down the stairs to safety.
“It made our exit possi-
ble,” she said. “If it had
happened in the middle of
the night, we wouldn’t
have made it out.”
Pickering Deputy Fire
Chief Mark Diotte said
barns typically burn fast
and this incident was no
exception.
“They go really quickly
and when (firefighters)
pulled up it was complete-
ly involved,” said Mr.
Diotte.
A cause has not been de-
termined.
Neighbour Jeanine Car-
son is helping to co-ordi-
nate an effort to raise
money to support the fam-
ilies that were burned out.
Ms. Carson said the family
of four has already “been
deluged with clothing” to
replace what was lost, and
that furniture donations
“are starting to trickle in”.
Over $2,500 has thus far
been donated to the two
families.
Monetary donations can
be sent to Mt. Zion United
Church, C/O Murray
Jones, 4450 Sideline 4, Ash-
burn, Ont., L0B 1A0.

The Multiple Sclerosis So-

starting its 27th annual
MS Carnation Campaign
on May 8, continuing
through the Mother’s Day
weekend.
The Durham Chapter
will be selling carnations
to the public to raise funds
to f ight MS.
“The MS Carnation
Campaign gives us a
chance to get out into our
community to not only
raise funds for the families
living with MS, but to raise
awareness about this
often disabling disease,”
said Tania Hobbs, public
relations director.
The campaign has
raised over $36 million for
the Multiple Sclerosis So-
ciety of Canada since 1976.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
is a disease that randomly
attacks the central ner-

APRIL 22, 2003
Seen from far above, in the darkness
of space, the deep blue and vibrant
green of Earth must surely be a
beautiful sight to any who behold it.
But under its attractive facade lies a
broken world. Natural habitats are
being destroyed, bodies of water are
becoming dangerously polluted,
wildlife resources are greedily
exploited, aggressive agricultural
practices are damaging the
environment, and wars are not only
destroying human life and social
infrastructures, but our natural
environments as well.
Earth’s biodiversity - the wealth of
plants, animals, ecosystems and genes
- is what allows life on this planet to
adapt, survive and thrive. As humans,
we are completely dependent on this
biodiversity. Ironically, we continue to
destroy large parts of our natural
world, placing extreme pressure on its
many life forms, often to the point of
extinction. Each new extinction of
species leads us slowly but surely to
our own.
But who says you can’t change the
world? Everyone of us has the power
to improve the environment. One great
way to start making a change for the
better is by organizing an activity that
promotes biodiversity awareness on
National Earth Day, which is held each
year on April 22. Plant a tree, or
organize a wildlife awareness trek
through a local forest or on a nearby
mountain. If you have school-age
children, get involved in a special
project at their school. Throughout the
year, continue to remember that you
have the power and ability to change
the world. Whenever possible, opt for
food products and goods produced in
accordance with sustainability
guidelines, and avoid buying at-risk
tree species such as wood taken from
rainforests. Not using herbicides and
pesticides on your lawn and garden is
another great way to make a change
for the better.
Who says you can’t change the world?
Water Facts:
• The Oshawa Creek Watershed consists of 120km 2 of land, which drains into Lake Ontario starting in the Oak Ridges Moraine. This results in an
average of 98,805,000 litres of water/day being discharged into the lake.
• An acre of corn gives off 15,140 litres of water in transpiration each day
• It takes approx. 3.75 litres of water to process a quarter pound of hamburger.
• One drop of oil can contaminate up to 25 litres of water
• 63 different species of fish live in the 15 watersheds within the jurisdiction of Central Lake Ontar io Conservation
• On average, each person uses approx. 290 litres of water/day
• Water is a natural insulator which regulates the earth’s temperature
• On average a person will use 2.5-7 litres of water to brush their teeth if they leave the tap runnin g
• It takes 7,850 litres of water to make four new tires
• Approx. 1,600,000 km. of pipelines and aqueducts - enough to circle the earth 40 times are in the Un ited States and Canada
Watersheds of the Central Lake Ontario Conservation
Tree Facts:
• Reduce Greenhouse Effect by planting a tree. Trees can absorb C02 at a rate of 13 pounds/tree/year. Trees reach their most productive stage at about 10 years.
• Windbreaks around homes can be shields against wind and snow and heating costs can be reduced by as much as 30%.
• Trees along rivers, streams, & lakes reduce water temperatures by their shade, prevent or reduce ban k erosion and silt, and provide hiding places for
improving fisheries habitat
• Research indicates that trees help reduce stress in the workplace and speed recovery of hospital pat ients.
• Trees give people a multitude of recreational opportunities and provide habitat for wildlife.
• Depending on size, species and condition, shade from trees can reduce utility bills for air conditio ning in residential and commercial buildings by 15-50%
• Provide brilliant colours to landscapes in the fall. After the leaves drop to the ground & are raked , they provide excellent mulch for flowerbeds & gardens as well as exercise for people.

Mobile Showroom to your home.
Above, inside you'll find his display of
Top Quality Vinyl Windows.
Wayne Hutchison brings to the
replacement window and door busi-
ness a new and long overdue fea-
ture. It's a Mobile Showroom which
just may be the only one in Canada.
"The day is gone when you car-
ried some brochures and a sample
window to a customer's home,"
explains Wayne. "So I obtained a
retired North York Mobile Library
truck and installed interior walls
along with all of my window sam-
ples."
When you call Durham
Windows and Doors for a free esti-
mate, Wayne will show up at your
door with his Mobile Showroom
which you'll enter by way of a slid-
ing patio door.
Inside, displayed on the walls,
are the SecurPlus series of vinyl
windows which you're free to oper-
ate and you'll discover the many
special features including how they
can be cleaned without going out-
side.
"After being in this business for
25 years, I can honestly say these are
the finest windows on the market,"
says Wayne. "They're triple sealed to
reduce air leakage and come with
heavy duty hardware."
All SecurPlus vinyl windows
come with Low E Glass which filters
out the ultraviolet rays keeping your
home cooler in the summer and
eliminate fading of your curtains,
drapes and furniture.
All of the windows come with a
lifetime warranty on the frame and
hardware.
Wayne would also like his cus-
tomers to know that he does all of
the estimates personally, eliminating
the cost of a salesperson.

after and although the Panthers
tried frantically, they could not get
the equalizer.
The Panthers finished second in
their division, resulting in a semifi-
nal matchup with the Pickering
Panthers major peewee 'A' team,
which had finished first in its divi-
sion. In an exciting game, the se-
lects managed a 4-2 win.
In Game 1, the Panthers came
out flying and defeated a surprised
Agincourt Lions team 10-0. In
Game 2, the Panthers played a
solid, hard-hitting game, but lost 4-
1 to the Tigers. The Panthers need-
ed a victory in Game 3 to advance
to the next round and came up big
by defeating the Whitby Wildcats 'A'
team 4-1. After Whitby opened the
scoring, the Panthers stormed back
with four unanswered goals.
Just prior to the tournament, the
Panthers sewed up the York-Sim-
coe league championship with a
hard-fought series win over the
Whitby Wildcats. It was the first
league playoff title for the Pan-
thers, despite making it to
the final the past three sea-
sons.
Needing only a win or a tie
in the fifth and deciding
game, the Panthers sprinted
to a 4-0 lead, before holding
on for the 4-2 win. Pickering
won the series five points to
three.
Pickering needed a last-
minute goal to pull out a 1-1
tie with Whitby in Game 4. In
Game 3, Whitby squeaked
out a 2-1 victory, scoring the
winning goal on the power
play in the last minute of the
game. The Panthers took
Game 2 at home 3-0 after
opening the series with a 4-2
victory in Whitby.
In the league semifinal, the
Panthers ousted Clarington
two games to one. Pickering
opened the series with a 5-1
win in Clarington, before
being edged 1-0 in Game 2.
Pickering closed out the se-
ries with a 2-1 road win.
Pickering won the first
round of the playoffs by beat-
ing Oshawa two games to
none, 5-1 at home and 2-1 in
Oshawa.
Pickering's tournament
title came at the Pickering
Panthers' annual Select
Tournament over the March
Break. The Panthers defeat-
ed Waterloo (2-0), Erin-Hills-
burgh (8-0) and Brampton
(4-1) to earn a berth in the
semifinals where they beat
the Ajax Knights 3-1. In the
f inal, Pickering edged Rich-
mond Hill 2-1.

Town of Ajax
Class Environmental Assessment Study Achilles Road Extension
Notice of Public Information Centre
The Town of Ajax will be holding a Public Information Centre to discuss the eastward extension of
Achilles Road across Carruthers Creek, between Salem Road (previously Pickering Beach Road) and
the proposed Shoal Point Road.
Subject to the final outcome of the study, the following proposal is being reviewed:
• Construct an extension of Achilles Road
The extension of Achilles Road would provide access from Hwy 401 to the proposed business area,
east of Shoal Point Road.
You are invited to the Public Information Centre where we will provide you with information on the
proposed project and discuss any comments or concerns that you feel should be addressed during
the project.
The Public Information Centre will be held:
Tuesday May 6, 2003 6- 8:30 p.m.
Main Branch of the Ajax Library “Rotary Room”
55 Harwood Avenue Ajax, Ontario
The planning and design work for the project is being conducted in accordance with a Schedule “C”
project under the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Guide, approved under the Ontario
Environmental Assessment Act. The purpose of this Environmental Assessment Study is to identify
and evaluate the effects of road improvements on the environment and community. The planning
process also provides opportunity for public input, which will lead us to a preferred design for the
road extension.
Should you have any questions, concerns or wish to comment, please contact one
