The construction of Petticoat Creek Bridge, which was actual- ly completed last year, is one of 57 projects along the province’s waterfront sharing in a $9.2-mil- lion grant from SuperBuild and the Canada-Ontario Infrastruc- ture program. “It’s a very welcome and pleasant surprise,” said Gil Pa- terson, Pickering’s director of corporate services and treasur- er. Connecting the Petticoat Creek Conservation Area to Park Crescent in Pickering’s West Shore, the bridge cost al- most $1 million to construct. Through the federal and provincial cost-sharing grant program, the City of Pickering will receive about 30 per cent of those costs back, approximate- ly $279,426. Mr. Paterson said the news was unexpected as it was the Wa t erfront Regeneration Trust that applied for the grant, not Pickering. It sent out letters to munici- palities in April 2001, inviting them to submit projects as part of an overall application pack- age. At that point, the City had al- ready approved financing for Petticoat Creek Bridge from re- serves, development charges and a $231,000 internal loan, he said. Wa rd 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner suggested rather than paying back that loan right away, the City could use the newfound funding to re- duce its tax-rate increase this ✦See Pickering page 4 A.J. Most of that sunshine can be attributed to a $125,000 grant the project will receive from the Ontario Trillium Foundation over the next five years. “It makes the project sustain- able,” said local co-ordinator Angela Porteous, explaining up until now, contributions have been more on a short-term basis. And while those dollars have helped the project get off the ground, she says there was al- ways the underlying anxiety of future funding needs. With the g rant, those fears will be quelled for some time. The Pickering East Shore Community Association (PESCA) applied for the grant last spring, backed by the pro- ject’s partners — the City of Pickering, Toronto Region Con- servation, and Ontario Power Generation (OPG). “One of the reasons we liked this project was the idea of all the partners coming together with PESCA, a well-respected community organization in Pickering for at least the last 27 City gets $279,000 surprise ✦See Frenchman’s page 4 TROJANS ARE OUT Fo rde the high scorer Sports, 13 PICK AND PUSH Vo ters can choose with a button News, 3 SERVING PICKERING SINCE 1965 News Advertiser PRESSRUN 45,600 ✦ 20 PAGES ✦ SUNDAY, MARCH 9, 2003 ✦ durhamregion.com ✦ OPTIONAL DELIVERY $6/$1 NEWSSTAND A/P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY EDITION, March 9, 2003 www.durhamregion.com ( 4 Tickets To Be Won Per Family ) 20 Sets To Be Wo n 20 Sets To Be Wo n Draw Date: March 18/0 3 @ 4pm Draw Date: March 18/0 3 @ 4pm COL O U R M E FOR COL O U R M E FOR A CH A N CE T O WI N ! The idea of touch-screen voting will be tested at ad- vance polls in Ajax, Picker- ing and Oshawa for the 2003 municipal election. Even though paper bal- lots are faster, touch- screen voting’s time has come, says Ajax Deputy Clerk Andrew Brouwer. “I think eventually you’ll see everyone voting over the Internet. It’s the way of the future,” he adds. For now, the three mu- nicipalities are dipping their toes into the new technology. Ajax has pur- chased two of the $5,500 Accuvote-TS Units. Pickering has chosen to rent three for the price of $6,000 this year, and Os- hawa plans to employ four touch-screen units this year but hasn’t decided if it will lease or buy them. The units, which are produced by American manufacturer Diebold Election Systems, consist of a monitor, small key- board and a headset. They don’t require any local net- work, but election officials say one of the greatest benefits is increased ac- cessibility. With the touch screen, users can zoom in on a bal- lot or use a voice guidance system through the head- set. “Up until now, visually impaired voters have had to take someone in the booths with them to vote,” says Pickering Clerk Bruce Taylor. “That person has to be sworn in and they mark the ballot for the voter.” Used in conjunction with an automated voter list, touch-screen voting could give voters the flexibility to cast their ballot wherever they want, adds Kim Kit- teringham, Oshawa’s deputy clerk. The City of Toronto and Oakville are just some of the municipalities that have used touch-screen voting for advance polls and in partnership with paper ballots, she points out. Barrie is the only munic- ipality in Ontario so far to switch entirely to touch- screen voting. PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ——A 38-year-old Scarbor- ough man is lucky to be alive after the dump truck he was driving rolled onto its roof in the ditch alongside Hwy. 401 Friday just east of Brock Road. The accident happened at 7:35 a.m. in the eastbound lanes, accord- ing to an Ontario Provincial Police spokesman at the scene. He said the accident occurred after the truck driver came upon a white cube van that was having me- chanical problems and travelling at an estimated 10 kilometres per hour. “Vehicles were avoiding it, and a dump truck came up behind it, and to avoid hitting it...(the driver) made a lane change and tried to get out of the way,” the spokesman explained, adding the manoeuvre sent the vehi- cle into the ditch. He said the truck driver was “very lucky” to have suffered only minor injuries, noting the vehicle’s cab was largely intact. The driver was taken to Rouge Valley Ajax. The curb lane around the accident scene was closed to traffic. The truck was carrying a load of dirt. The OPP spokesman said police had obtained the licence plate num- ber of the cube van and the investi- gation will continue. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 9, 2003 PAGE 3 A/P Pickering (accross from the P.T.C) Yo u’re invited to a great meal Buy One Entrée, Get One Free! Durham taxes go up 5.3 per cent $73 on average home is just the beginning BByy JJaaccqquuiiee MMccIInnnneess Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM –––– Services provided by the Region of Durham will cost an extra $73 on the average home this year but the final property tax bill increase could be more after munici- palities set their budgets in the weeks ahead. The $73 increase on the regional portion of the property tax bill is based on a home valued at $200,000. The property tax bill includes three components; regional, municipal and educational taxes. Durham politicians settled on a 5.27 per cent increase for the region- al component at a council meeting, Wednesday after whittling that number down dollar by dollar from an original estimate of $90 in Febru- ary. But finance commissioner Jim Clapp said the property taxpayer will likely see an increase closer to 3.2 per cent over last year’s bill when the educational portion and local taxes are factored in. Based on Durham’s 2003 assessment, Mr. Clapp says he anticipates no in- crease in the education tax compo- nent of the bill and local taxes gen- erally come in at an average around three per cent. With the three tax components factored together, that works out to about a 3.2 per cent in- crease, he says. Although taxes are going up, resi- dents probably won’t notice a big difference in regional service levels. The majority of the increase ($8.6 million) will be gobbled up by union salary equity adjustments and annu- al salary and benefit increases. The Region lost a $900,000 subsidy for so- cial services from the Province this year and inflation accounted for an- other $900,000 in the $10.4 million budget increase, Mr. Clapp said. Last year regional taxes increased 3.5 per cent. In 2001, taxes went up six per cent. In 2000, taxes actually went down by 1.1 per cent. While politicians passed the bud- get, they still have some other issues to consider that could further im- pact the tax rate. The Region is still waiting to hear from the Province if its contribution to the GTA-wide pooling of social assistance and so- cial housing costs will change from 2002. Additionally, there are still some requests, including one for $10 million from the University of On- tario Institute of Technology, to be considered before council breaks for summer this June. -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 RReeggiioonnaall ttaaxx iinnccrreeaassee,, bbyy ppeerr cceenntt 22000033 22000022 22000011 22000000 year. “When you begin to add up the City and the Region portion (of the tax bill), it begins to add up to a big burden on the local taxpayer,” he said. Pickering expects to increase its taxes by 6.8 per cent this year, while the Region is currently sitting at a six per cent hike as well, Coun. Brenner said. He estimated the City could lower its tax rate by at least one per cent with the help of the Petticoat Creek Bridge dollars. Mr. Paterson said he needs time to consider the matter before rec- ommending the best course of ac- tion to council when it approves the 2003 budget March 24. “This is a wonderful additional source of funding for us, but I think our obligation is to flow this unan- ticipated source of funding back to where it came,” he said. Both plans will benefit taxpayers, just one is a little sooner than the other, he added. years,” said Judy Scott-Jacobs, a member of the Trillium selec- tion team. “We see so many projects coming to us at Trillium,” she added. “They all have their worth but this one was so well-presented and with so much enthusiasm. It was a unanimous decision of our board.” Having lived in West Shore for the past 27 years, Ms. Scott-Ja- cobs said the grant had “special meaning” for her. The grant was officially pre- sented to the project Tuesday night at an annual dinner held each year to recognize its volun- teers. Three local schools — William Dunbar Public School, Gandat- setiagon Public School, and Dunbarton High School — were honoured for their efforts in naturalizing portions of their schoolyards. Local Scouts and Girl Guides were recognized for taking part in a number of plantings and monitoring initiatives through- out the year. Upcoming future events in- clude Pickering Pride Day April 26 and a woodlot management series to be held over the sum- mer. New volunteers are always needed for the group, said Ms. Porteous. Tutoring, particularly one on one provides the personalized attention that helps any child learn. Figuring out if your child needs extra help is easy. If your child is struggling with daily homework, can’t seem to stay organized, and gets poor grades he/she is likely a good candidate for tutoring. Deciding what type of tutor to hire is the next step. By far the best choice is a professional company that offers an assessment and creates a personalized program to build necessary foundational skills. This will ensure your child’s overall understanding, and independent study habits improve. Why choose one on one? To begin with one on one attention means quicker results. As well, it means that the program goals are designed and the lessons are implemented with your child’s individual learning needs in mind. The individualized approach ensures that your child has the opportunity to reach his/her potential. But such good work does not happen without a sustained effort by our officers. To make roads safer, police have been out in force on pa- trols targeting speeders, red-light and stop-sign runners, ag- gressive drivers and seat-belt violators. In all, drivers in Durham racked up 47,890 tickets in 2002, up a whopping 19 per cent from the 40,396 tickets issued in 2001. The emphasis has been on putting a stop to unsafe driving practises and some success has been noted. The number of fatal accidents dropped from 27 in 2001 to 21 in 2002, a sig- nificant improvement over one year. Still, 23 people lost their lives on Durham’s roads in 2002, a harrowing number and no cause for celebration. However, while any death is one too many, it’s at least encouraging to see enforcement is having a long-term effect on reducing tragedies. “The numbers are great. The emphasis has been on in- creased enforcement by our unit and at the division levels and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the numbers have gone down,” said Constable Brendan Kennaley of the traffic enforcement and major collision investigation unit. One disturbing aspect of the numbers is the rise in drink- ing and driving charges. Despite widespread publicity about the pitfalls of impaired driving by police, government and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) among others, it appears many are still not getting the message. The number of impaired charges in 2002 was 765, an increase of two per cent, while charges for driving above the legal blood-alcohol limit were up by five per cent to 832. The high-profile May 2002 death of Terry Ryan, Durham Regional Police Association president, squarely puts the spotlight on the effects of drinking and driving. Mr. Ryan, a husband and father of two who spent 28 years on the Durham force and was once a breathalyser technician, was killed by a drunk driver in an horrific accident last year. The man who drove into Mr. Ryan’s car was found to be two-and- a-half times the legal limit and was sentenced to three years in jail. The tragedy puts in stark light the ultimate price paid by those who drink and drive. Lives are forever shattered and the embarrassment and penalties those who foolishly hit the road after one too many are the least of it. Let’s all work together to continue to make our roads safer and reduce the number of fatal collisions on Durham’s roads. Parked buses, commercial vehicles nuisances on city streets TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: Sometimes people are inconsiderate when parking vehicles on streets and in front of their neighbours’ houses, espe- cially when they have space on their own property, or even in front of their own houses. Are school buses and other commer- cial vehicles allowed on residential streets in Pickering and surrounding cities? If not, then why do the residents still find it impossible to be “good neigh- bours” by placing these vehicles in the way of traffic and blocking their neigh- bours’ houses? School bus companies and other com- mercial vehicle companies should be pe- nalized for allowing their employees to do this. Or, will they have to wait for legal ac- tion? The City’s bylaw officers should patrol the roads to ensure they are cleared for snow removal and other necessary traf- fic, so as not to hinder those who are walking or playing around the areas. Isn’t this the reason we pay taxes for this and other services? JJ..RR.. Developer not the bad guy in flea market saga I’ve followed with great interest these last months the saga of the Pickering Markets. The story was punctuated Mon- day with the crash of the last wall as the building was knocked to the ground. Like many people in Durham Re- gion, I have visited the flea market on many occasions over the years (even when its home was in the old Sheridan Mall), looking for a good deal on everything from CDs to children’s toys and household items. I, too, was disappointed with the decision to tear down the Metro East Trade Centre. I’ve been mightily impressed, however, both by the passionate at- tempts to find solutions for the dis- placed market vendors led by artic- ulate lawyer Arley Karpman, and by the thoughtful way in which other proponents of the flea market have tried — quite literally — to open new doors for those directly affected. First Professional, the company behind the complete redevelop- ment of the site, has taken more than its fair share of jabs from area residents, some disgruntled ven- dors and even a few local pundits. From where I sit, though, I’ve found the people at First Profes- sional - and particularly spokesman Ornella Richichi — to be responsive, open to new ideas and committed to helping find a new home for the market vendors. In the end, a bid to set up a tem- porary location for the flea market on the same site fell through. The good news, however, is that it seems certain a new home nearby will be ready for the vendors later this year. It’s true that the flea market has earned a reputation around the Greater Toronto Area as a place to shop on weekends till your heart’s content. It’s also true that the Metro East Trade Centre has be- come a local landmark simply be- cause it’s home to the flea market. But markets change, demo- graphics shift and progress dic- tates new demands. First Profes- sional has every right - morally and legally - to redevelop a site that it believed was under-performing. First Professional could have pro- duced flow charts and consultant reports and revenue projections to make its case before the public, but it didn’t. Instead, it engaged local vendors, worked with their repre- sentatives, helped foster discussion about solutions and worked hard on behalf of those it was forcing out. In the end, it seems the story will come to a good end, when vendors move into a new building being con- structed this year at Squires Beach Road and Bayly Street. You say to yourself, “I need to look rejuvenated but a facelift at my age? Or have others made comments to you such as, “what’s wrong, why are you frowning, are you in a bad mood today?” And your response would be, “I was fine until now.” Stress, smiling, laughing, frowning and the sun all contribute to squint lines (crows feet) and frown lines on the forehead. Botox is a purified protein which is injected in the overactive muscle which in turn relaxes the muscle and the wrinkles or lines are smoothed away for a period of 3 - 4 months. This non- invasive treatment takes about 15 minutes. Results are evident in 3 - 14 days. No wonder it’s the fastest growing cosmetic procedure today. It’s a lunch time favorite in our practice. FULL TIME SERVICE FOR ALL YOUR HEARING NEEDS Fact Fact Fact TO ADVERTISE IN THE HEALTH AND BEAUTY FEATURE CONTACT MARILYN BROPHY AT 905-683-5110 Ever go on a weight loss program only to find yourself back to where you started or worse? According to the scale, you lost weight, unfortunately, you probably lost the wrong type of weight, and you may have gained unwanted body fat and become less healthy! This is the exact opposite of what you tried to achieve! How is this possible? Body weight can be broken down into 2 parts - lean body mass and fat mass. Lean body mass consists of muscle, organs, bone, and water, while fat mass is just that - fat. Lean body mass actually holds about 70% water and fat mass holds 10% water. Now back to the scale, a ‘cup of fat is lighter than a cup of water. When you boil meat in water, to make soup etc you will see the fat float to the top, because it is lighter than water. The more fat a person carries, the more prone to dehydration and toxins tend to store in fat mass-two huge contributing factors to disease, dehydration & toxins. In order for a weight loss program to be truly successful, it must allow the person to maintain or increase lean body mass while reducing the body fat. The solution is body composition analysis. Quickly, easily & accurately you can find out just where you stand with your own body composition and be guided to a healthy reduction of fat mass. The body composition testing offers a way of measuring & monitoring your progress. If you are thinking of those scales that measure body fat percentage, they can be out five percent or higher, that is too big of a margin to be accurate. Monitoring results monthly or quarterly will keep you on track achieving positive results. It is better to lose one pound on the scale and several inches and 2 % body fat, than to lose ten pounds of water and precious lean body mass. Improving your body composition and gaining lean muscle mass improves your ability to burn fat and this ensures that you won’t regress back to where you were before. We should now understand that what was once referred to as “weight loss” is now referred to as “improving your body composition.” Body composition analysis ensures a healthy weight loss! DENTAL OFFICE DENTURIST •• “It’s one thing to have a new Cancer Centre in our Region, but quite anoth- er to ensure that everyone living here has equal access regardless of where they live,” says the new Head of the Cancer Centre, Dr. Peter Dixon. “The first step is to construct the building, of course. But, it’s how we deploy our physicians that will make the biggest difference in delivering care to people living in both busy, urban areas and those in smaller, rural communities.” Cancer Centre planners are as con- cerned about those who traditionally do not use cancer care services because they live far away from the f acility as they are about those who w ould find it easier to access because they live in closer proximity. One of the most interesting facts about com- munities that have radiation services is that 50% more people end up using them if they’re available. That, of course, means that cancer survival rates increase dramatically. Although it may not be the ideal treat- ment programme, in communities without full cancer care services 30% to 40% of all patients with malignant tumours are treated with one type of cancer treatment, when, in fact, two- thirds of these patients require a multi-treatment approach. The three main treatments are: radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery. Dr. Dixon says, “When all three are available - as they will be at the new Cancer Centre - then the quality of care increases.” So how will planners ensure that peo- ple across the Region can access the full range of treatment services regardless of whether they live in downtown Oshawa or in Northumberland? Dr. Dixon explains: “We’re planning on creating teams of physicians and other cancer specialists who will move around the Region to organize specialty cancer care clinics (such as lung, breast and prostate) to help to provide care at other hospitals throughout the Region. Oncologists will visit these sites to help residents access needed care.” Additionally, the experts at the Cancer Centre will be in continual contact with doctors at hospitals in other communities to help with diagnosis and treatment of patients. Durham Regional Cancer Centre Comes Alive... The creation of the new Cancer Centre has three phases: (1) Excavation of the site to create the building footings, foundation, and space for the lower floors that will house the radiation machines. (2) Construction of the actual building which will be attached to Lakeridge Health Oshawa to connect with Emergency, Surgery, Pharmacy, and other critically important and com- plementary care serv- ices. (3) Equipping the Cancer Centre with medical technology, equipment and fur- nishings. The excavation con- tinues until June 2003, at which point the site will be ready for construction which is slated to begin shortly there- after and carry through until 2005. The excavation reach- es down thirty feet below ground. Crews are working steadily to excavate as deep as forty-five feet. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 9, 2003 - PAGE 9 A/P The New Cancer Centre - It’s All About Equal Access to Care To continually monitor how well the Cancer Centre is reaching into all areas of the Region, planners will measure utilization rates to ensure that patients are accessing the care and expertise available to them, regardless of where they live. “Our Cancer Centre is really a hub that serves as the central point from which we share our resources,” says Dr. Dixon. “The vast majority of equip- ment, experts, and research are here; however, this critical mass provides the opportunity to send them out to the greater community as well.” Medical oncologists are already working at the Cancer Centre. Radiation oncologists are being recruited to consult for patients in Durham Region and these patient are then treated at Sunnybrook Hospital. Once the Cancer Centre opens, these specialists will work full-time in Durham. Dr. Dixon says, “Our primary goal is to make sure that whoever needs can- cer care in this Region gets it close to home when they need it.” Cancer Centre Construction Goes Deep SECOND EDITION Did you know? Cancer is the disrup- tion of the orderly and regulated cycle of cell replication and divi- sion under the control of our genes. Knowledge about can- cer genetics is rapidly expanding, with impli- cations for all aspects of cancer manage- ment, including pre- vention, screening, and treatment. Genetic information, including information from fam- ily history and from DNA-based testing which provides a means to identify peo- ple who have an increased risk of can- cer. Genetic risk assessment is general- ly undertaken only when family history of the disease or other clinical characteristics, such as early onset of cancer, indicate a sub- stantial likelihood of an inherited predispo- sition to cancer. Identifying a person with an increased risk of cancer can reduce the occurrence of can- cer through clinical management strategies or improve that per- son’s health outcome or quality of life through intrinsic bene- fits of the information itself. As the genetics revolu- tion continues, the gap between genetic dis- coveries and clinical applications narrows. Genetic information is beginning to be used to understand the biology of disease, character- ize malignancies, develop new therapeu- tic modalities, and identify individuals at increased risk of devel- oping cancer. The Durham Regional Cancer Centre will provide this applica- tion for patients and Lakeridge Health Oshawa will employ 4 medical geneticists, 2 of whom will support the Cancer Centre. Genetic counselors are medical professionals trained in genetics and patient counseling. These counselors will work with individuals and families with questions about their medical or family his- tory and will help patients in the manage- ment of their disease. Genetic councilors also offer immediate and ongoing support, crisis intervention and grief counseling for individuals and fami- lies undergoing adjust- ment to the physical and emotional burden of a medical diagnosis. Counselors work as team members with primary care doctors and nurses, and other health care profession- als to provide compre- hensive care. New Cancer Centre to Become a Research Hub Beyond construc- tion, the Cancer Centre will become a hub of research into cancer care and treatment. It will participate in a worldwide network of cancer facilities conducting on-site research to discover the most effective methods of treat- ment. Almost 15 years ago the Oshawa General Hospital Board (now Lakeridge Health Oshawa) identified a need for expansion of the hospital to meet growing patient care needs at the Lakeridge Health Oshawa site. They turned to The Oshawa General Hospital Foundation for help. A capital campaign designated as “Setting the Pace” was conducted from 1990-1994. The goal of this capital campaign was to raise a minimum of $20 million towards the com- munity share of the overall redevelopment project cost of $106 million. The community response was tremendous and exceeded the target - raising $24.3 mil- lion. The redevelopment project was delayed for several years due to changes in provincial government approvals and the report of the Health Services Restructuring Commission. As a result, these funds were invested on behalf of the community and, with accrued interest, grew to over $31.1 million. Finally, the government permitted the origi- nal project to move forward. As a result, all Setting the Pace funds (including the original amount raised plus interest from investments) were expended to build: the New Emergency Department, the North Wing, South Infill, and major renovation/modernization of patient areas inside the existing hospital. On May 4, 1999, Lakeridge Health Corporation received Ministry of Health approval and funding to move forward with the redevelopment which were supported by Setting the Pace funds. By the end of 1999, $19.8 million was trans- ferred to Lakeridge Health with the remain- ing balance of all Setting the Pace funds transferred to Lakeridge Health by the end of 2000 to complete the above. Setting the Pace did not raise or collect funds for the Durham Regional Cancer Centre. At the time of the Setting the Pace Campaign, the building of Cancer Centres in Ontario was 100% funded by the province through the Ontario Cancer Treatment & Research Foundation. In 1996, the funding policy for cancer centres changed from 100% provincial funding to 70% provincial funding, with the remaining 30% to be raised through community sup- port. The Heroes of Hope Campaign is dedicated entirely to the new Cancer Centre. The con- struction of the Cancer Centre is inter-con- nected with the renovations that took place as a result of the proceeds of Setting the Pace funds. How? Those renovations helped to ensure that the Hospital had the basic infra- structure requirements in place to allow con- struction of the Cancer Centre to begin as part of the redeveloped hospital. In fact, redevelopment of Lakeridge Health Oshawa will continue in years to come to expand all areas such as pharmacy, surgery and emergency. Following is a breakdown of funds from the Setting the Pace Campaign and how they were allocated. How Fund Raising Over the Last 15 Years Has Led to Today’s Heroes of Hope Campaign Why do people give? What prompts a person to make a gift of a lifetime, per- haps the biggest donation they have ever made? The Heroes of Hope Campaign has inspired such giving in the Durham community. “Cancer affects everyone, whether or not you are a patient,” says Don Blight, Campaign Chair. “We all know someone who has suffered this horrible disease, and when the opportu- nity is there to help, well, how could anyone say no? In fact, what we’re see- ing is that people really want to feel like they are supporting cancer patients directly - that’s why they’re making such incredible gifts.” Here, we profile some of the Campaign’s largest donors to learn about the spirit of giving, and how all of these people are “heroes” of hope, and what prompted them to make their his- tory makings gifts. The Mackie Family: Aunt Marilyn, Ross, Dean, Norm, Paul and Scott Ross (father), Marilyn (aunt),and brothers, Dean, Norm, Paul and Scott built and managed Mackie Moving. Although their business dealings cross the globe, their personal interests stay close to home, particularly when the good health of the community is at stake. As a family, they have made a wonderful contribution to the Cancer Centre, the largest gift of their lives. “The best part of donating is that the gift is in the giving,” says Paul Mackie who is also Co- Chair of the Heroes of Hope Campaign. “This is one of those milestone moments in life because every time you think about what you’ve done, you feel better and better about it.” The Mackies decided to make their “gift-of-a-lifetime” because they want- ed to give back to the community that has given so much to them to help build their business. Also, their personal commitment to cancer patients and their families. “We can’t bear to see the pain and suffering cancer patients go through because they have the added burden of having to travel far away to get treatment that’s not here,” said Paul Mackie. Like most people, the Mackies have seen family, friends, co-workers and neighbours devastated by cancer. It has led to their belief that our health is the most important part of life. Paul added, “My dad, brothers and I felt personally connected to the cause. After seeing people afflicted with cancer, and know- ing that we could contribute to their Durham Donors Make Gifts of a Lifetime A/P PAGE 10 - NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 9, 2003 www.durhamregion.com quality of life, how could we not be moved to give?” The Perry Family: Steve, Jack, Shirley and Lisa “Originally, we gave $50,000 to the Cancer Centre,” says Steve Perry, President of The Perry Group of Companies that has been serving Durham Region’s plumbing, heating, air conditioning and electrical needs for the last 75 years. “But then my mom, dad and I decided that this was too important - we had to do more.” That’s when father, mother & son & daughter decided that, as a family, they would go the extra mile. “We increased our gift to over $100,000, the largest donation we’ve ever made.” The family, who have lived here all of their lives, and believe in giving back to the community, said it wasn’t a “tough decision” at all. “We feel absolutely fantastic about this,” says Steve Perry. “The need for cancer care is just so obvious, and what happens if one day it’s you?” The family feels that Lakeridge Health Oshawa is a first-rate facility that provides hands-on, com- passionate and personal care. “It’s the perfect location to build the new Cancer Centre. They have the space and most importantly, the expertise,” he added. Steve Perry, who is a volunteer on the Campaign’s Major Gift Committee, sees first-hand the dedication of the vol- unteer team to the Cancer Centre. “That really affected me,” he says. “When you see people who really believe in some- thing putting their money where their mouth is, it’s beyond inspiring.” The Perry’s encourage other families to get together to support their community - and their new Cancer Centre. “It was one of the most important and wonder- ful moments in our family’s life,” com- mented Steve Perry. “We believe that the Cancer Centre is the most important cause in the community right now. Think about how it could affect you, then talk with your family. It could be one of the greatest decisions you make.” Setting the Pace Funds Redevelopment Trust Funds Cumulative to August 31, 2001 Temporary Facilities Dialysis $149,716 Upgrades to Mental Health Program $1,136,981 Fire Safety Upgrades $820,463 Elevator Renovations $681,113 Emergency Power/Medical Gas $514,969 Air Supply Operating Suites $870,625 Communication Improvements $379,726 Asbestos Removal $701,765 Pinewood Air Condit/Beds $326,126 B/D Wing Renovations $794,881 Pre-op Assessment Clinic $250,000 Mammography Clinic Improvements $194,376 Renovations 6G $1,730,483 Renovations Reminder G Wing $1,182,688 MRI Installation $937,697 Pharmacy Interim Move $47,013 Pharmacy Renovations $33,587 Servery Renovations $74,474 Laboratory Redevelopment $13,174 North Wing Shell $13,607,151 North Infill Entrance $1,360,715 South Infill $2,332,654 Renovations “F” Wing $2,138,267 Pneumatic Tube $26,491 Renovations “G” Lower Ground to 2nd Floor $1,050,254 Design Phase 2 North Tower $239,470 Total $31,594,859 One of the largest companies in the Region, Ontario Power Generation (OPG), has made the Cancer Centre one of its top charitable causes, granting its largest donation ever to cancer care. “As a responsible corporate citizen, OPG is proud to be involved in helping members of this community, including our own employees, obtain access to the best health care facilities and services available. We ’r e involved because we are a major nuclear com- pany that has been operating for years in this area, the energy capital of Ontario, and it is logical and f itting for us to be involved in the Region,” said Graham Brown, Chief Operating Officer. OPG contributed $600,000 in support of the Cancer Centre. The donation is an inspiration to other large corporations in the Region whose very presence helps to define the communities in which they reside. “OPG is an excellent example of what hap- pens when a great need is recognized,” says Don Blight, Campaign Chair. “They are making a wise investment in this community because they have the foresight to see how quickly it is growing and that people will need cancer care. In my view, that’s what good corporate citizenship is all about.” The new Cancer Centre has its own guardian angel - it’s called The Auxiliary of Lakeridge Health Oshawa. For 96 years, this excep- tionally dedicated group of volunteers has served the health care needs of our community. The Auxiliary has pledged its second largest donation - $1 million to the new Cancer Centre. “You can imagine how meaningful this gift is,” commented Don Blight, Campaign Chair. “These fantastic volunteers do everything they can to raise funds. Little-by-little - and before you know it - they’ve got a million dollars! I still don’t know how they do it. All I know is that I’m extremely grateful to them.” Because the Auxiliary’s first commitment is to patients, they are dedicating their support to the Cancer Centre’s Healing Gardens, a special place where patients and their families can go for peace and tranquility. But, how did The Auxiliary grow from a few concerned citizens in 1907 to a 400-strong organization today? Here is a look at their proud history... In 1907, despite the long standing efforts of townspeople and doc- tors there was no hospital in Oshawa. The sick and injured were forced to make long, tedious, and often painful journeys by rail or horse-drawn wagon to Toronto. The town, however, was not with- out resources or commitment. There were many women’s organiza- tions headed by ambitious, far-sighted ladies who did more than just recognize the health care needs of their community. They were determined to do something about it...and they did! They raised $1,000 and purchased the land on which the hospital stands today. Mrs. R.S. McLaughlin and her elected group were the first to initi- ate this venture and they never looked back. The Oshawa Hospital opened on August 13, 1910. The new Hospital was a small 16-bed facility but it was the biggest development in the life of the commu- nity at the time. The Auxiliary devoted themselves wholeheartedly to the patients and the nurses-in-training. But, that was just the beginning. Construction of a laundry began in 1911 and was com- pleted in 1912, provided by the Auxiliary without any expense to the Hospital Board. Next, the Auxiliary completely furnished a nurses’ residence. In 1925 the Auxiliary established a Social Service Department as a follow-up for discharged patients. For many years the department was operated entirely by the Auxiliary. The Auxiliary undertook a variety of innovative fundraisers such as musicals, theatre, bazaars, card parties, teas, dances, house tours, fashion shows, as well as seasonal projects. It opened a Gift Shop in 1957, which became an instant success. To this day, the Gift Shop provides valuable services to patients, staff and visitors. It is still a major source of income for the Auxiliary. In 1963 the Auxiliary established the Candy Striper program for teenage girls acting as nurses’ aides. In 1971 they expanded to include boys as well. In the following years volunteering was extended to include many in-services, wards and admitting. Now, in 2003, it has been 96 years since the formation of the Auxiliary. Today, there are over 400 Auxiliary members, 100 Youth Volunteers, and between 110-170 Summer Student Volunteers. The Auxiliary’s success can be attributed to one important factor: a heartfelt commitment to health care, by volunteers who are contin- ually setting goals and focusing on them until they are brought to life. People are at the heart of the Auxiliary’s success - involvement, par- ticipation and commitment. People helping people. The Volunteers actively participate in 25 areas within Lakeridge Health Oshawa. The Gift Shop,Coffee Kiosk,Nevada Ticket Sales and Bingo are the major contributors to the Auxiliary’s fundraising efforts. The Auxiliary has funded continuing education for nursing, scholarships for students entering University, and a constant flow of dollars to provide equipment for the hospital such as their other $1 million contribution towards an MRI unit at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. The Auxiliary proves that volunteering empowers individuals, builds solidarity, and encourages participation. It makes important contributions, economically as well as socially for the citizens of Oshawa. “We couldn’t have achieved all that we have over the last 96 years without the Auxiliary so we are extremely proud of them and thank- ful for their continued support and belief in good health care for this community,” said Chuck Powers, President of the Oshawa General Hospital Foundation. “We believe that by working together, we can make our Hospital and the community a better place for everyone”, said Sylvia Pelham, President of The Auxiliary of Lakeridge Health Oshawa. “For the more than 400 individuals who volunteer at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, volunteering is an expression of support and caring for the people of Oshawa and Durham as we do our best to reach to the heart of the Hospital’s mission statement”. “It’s incredible what this Auxiliary can do when we put our minds to something,” continued Pelham. “Just wait. We’re planning to make a history-making announcement in the next several weeks about a new development in our work and our continued commit- ment to this community and its good health.” *Special thank you to Marg Noonan, Dorcas Cane and Barb Peebles for helping to gather the information. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 9, 2003 - PAGE 11 A/P The Auxiliary of Lakeridge Health Oshawa The Rotary Clubs Of Port Perry, Oshawa, Bowmanville, Pickering And Parkwood “When we originally presented the local Rotary Clubs with the opportunity to get involved with the Heroes of Hope Campaign, there was just no hesitation. They knew they had to do something,” says Roy Good, Chair of the Heroes of Hope Community Committee. “Cancer is a dev- astating disease. One third of us will devel- op it at some point in our lives. That’s just too many people. Somethings got to be done now.” The Rotary Clubs throughout the Region have certainly stepped forward to support the new Cancer Centre. Bowmanville, Oshawa, Parkwood, Pickering and Port Perry have contributed a total of $120,000. Rotary is a worldwide service organization dedicated to the betterment of community everywhere. Members undertake large fund raising efforts in order to support their local communities and to help build developing communities all over the world. “Rotary always wants to ensure that their funds help people first,” says Good. “People need radi- ation treatment locally. Finally, they’ll have it. We’re delighted that their support will allow thousands of people to receive care close to home and close to the support of their families and friends.” Mr. Good encourages other service organi- zations to support the Cancer Centre. Good comments, “We all know someone who has been affected by cancer and we know what cancer does to a person’s life and the impact it has on their families. This is truly one of those rare opportunities when the support you give ripples out and touches so many lives. I’m very proud of the Clubs who decided to become a part of the new Cancer Centre.” A special Heroes of Hope appeal to the Region’s dealerships is underway. Paul Cross, General Manager at Ontario Motor Sales, and Don Switzer, General Manager at Gus Brown Pontiac, are heading up the Automotive Division of the Campaign. Their goal is to talk with every single auto- mobile dealership in the Region in some way, shape or form. They have formed a committee of leaders from the dealership sector that, together, are spreading the word about the new Cancer Centre. That word is having an incredible impact. Both new and used car dealers throughout Durham have shown their support by mak- ing public and personal commitments to the Heroes of Hope Campaign, said Glenn Wilson. “We are proud to thank automotive dealers such as Ontario Motor Sales Ltd., Cliff Mills Motors Ltd., Gus Brown Pontiac Buick, Gus Brown Employee Campaign/Special Fundraising, Discount Car & Truck Rental, Bruce Bissell Buick Pontiac Ltd., Marigold Ford Lincoln Sales Limited, Darryl’s Auto Centre, Whitby Oshawa Honda, Alex Williamson Motor Sales Limited, Williamson Buick-Pontiac GMC Ltd., Durham Dodge Chrysler, OWASCO Volkswagen & Audi Inc., Bill Nurse Chevrolet-Oldsmobile-Cadillac, Roy Nichols Motors Ltd., Motorcity Saturn/Isuzu, Boyer Pontiac Buick GMC Ltd., Enterprise Car & Truck Rental, the employees at Ontario Motor Sales, and oth- ers. Through their incredible generosity, we’ve raised an incredible $1 million!” said Paul Cross. Don Switzer states, “We set a major goal at the beginning of this campaign and we’re determined to reach it.” The Region’s car dealers are setting a whole new level of generosity. Car dealers are involved in the day-to-day lives of so many people in the community. They’re seeing their own customers and staff affected by cancer too, and that is an important reason why they are being so community-minded. “I feel so strongly about this Cancer Centre,” added Don Switzer. “My younger brother who is only 46 was diagnosed with cancer a year-and-a-half ago. He had to go to London for treatment, and it was an incredibly tough ordeal. He’s one of the miracle stories of survival. When you see someone you love suffer through cancer, it gives you a whole new perspective and compassion for people who face this awful disease.” Paul Cross added, “I’ve seen family, friends and co-workers who developed cancer. My own father died of cancer. The worst part is seeing people suffer the inconvenience and loneliness of having to travel far away just to get treatment. There was no way in the world that I was not going to help out on this Campaign. I want us all to do what we can to bring cancer care closer to home.” Durham Car Dealers Unite to Support Cancer Centre Banks Back New Cancer Centre Campaign In a proud show of support, the Region's top banks are pledging breakthrough sup- port for the Cancer Centre. Bank of Montreal, CIBC, Royal Bank, and Scotiabank are demonstrating their com- mitment to the Region's health care through donations totaling $555,000. "The banks play such an important part in all of our lives," said Campaign Chair, Don Blight. "It's a wonderful connection for them to be involved, investing in the good health of our Region." Bank of Montreal was the first bank to support the Cancer Centre, donating $180,000. "We made our decision in two days," says John Jones, Branch Manager in Durham Region. "I can't think of any- thing more important to support. Just try to find a family in our Region who is not affected by cancer. It's practically impos- sible. This Campaign is an incredible opportunity to do something that will affect people's lives for their entire lives. It's one of the best philanthropic invest- ments we've ever made." Scotiabank has donated $100,000 to the new Cancer Centre. "Local healthcare is something that all of us - both our cus- tomers and employees - consider an essential part of the local community. Most of us know someone whose life has been touched by cancer, and we know how harrowing this is both for the patient and their family. As part of our commit- ment to Durham Region, we were delight- ed to support the new Cancer Centre," said Tony Brathwaite, District Vice- President, North Scarborough/Durham, Scotiabank. CIBC also has supported the Campaign in a major way, pledging $125,000. "CIBC is committed to helping with the develop- ment of Durham Region. Over the years, CIBC has championed many cancer relat- ed causes. This issue is very close to our hearts as we work with hospitals through- out Canada to ensure that cancer patients have access to the best treatment avail- able," commented Alf Ramsey, Corporate and Public Affairs. Next Time You're At Your Bank, Donate to the Cancer Centre! The next time you are at your local bank, remember that they are investing in the good health of your community. Your community bank is now accepting dona- tions for the Heroes of Hope Campaign. You can make a donation at any branch of the Royal Bank, CIBC, Scotiabank or Bank of Montreal in Durham Region. Look for the Heroes of Hope Campaign posters and donation/information pam- phlets at your bank branch. "We know that people want to make a contribution to the Cancer Centre and we look for ways to make it easy, said Mr. Blight. It's as easy as completing a donation form and taking it to a teller. The teller will record your donation, issue a temporary receipt and notify the Campaign office of your donation. The office will then issue an official tax receipt within 10 business days. Participating banks will accept cash dona- tions or donations made by cheque, VISA, MasterCard, or pre-authorized payment. Visit your local bank and make a donation today and help "Bring Cancer Care Closer to Home". “In all of the years that I have lived, worked and volunteered here I have never seen the car dealers get behind a cause to this extent,” says Glenn Wilson, President of Ontario Motor Sales and Chair of the Heroes of Hope Major Gifts Committee. Students at Donevan Collegiate Institute Raise Funds for the New Durham Regional Cancer Centre The week of November 25, 2002 marked the begin- ning of Spirit Week at Donevan Collegiate Institute in Oshawa. The week was filled with lots of fun and excitement for the school community. Spirit Week is a collaboration of students, faculty, and staff in an effort to promote school spirit. Coordinated by the Student Council, Spirit Week spans 5 days of special events ranging from community service to academic and athletic events. The Student Council seeks to encourage and develop a stronger sense of school pride through a number of exciting, high participa- tion events, and hopes to carry that pride, spirit, and excitement into the remainder of the semester. On Friday, November 29, 2002, the staff and students wrapped up their annual Spirit Week. The Student Council nominated the Heroes of Hope Campaign as the beneficiary of the proceeds raised through vari- ous events including an “in-school-spa day”. Students who opted to participate in a last period buy-out gathered in the school’s auditorium to watch as Teacher, Tom Garrity, enjoyed the full “in-school- spa” experience of having his legs waxed. Teacher, Neil Verbeek, volunteered to have his head shaved and, as an added bonus, received a special “pie in the face” facial. Incredibly, students raised over $2,300 for the Heroes of Hope Campaign. Student Council President, Liam Mooney, challenged other schools to get involved to either match or exceed the funds raised by Donevan Collegiate and do what they can for our Cancer Centre. For information on the Heroes of Hope Campaign, please call the Campaign Office at (905) 721-4888. Congratulations to all of the high “spirited” students and teachers at Donevan! Thank you for all your support! Do You and Your Colleagues At Work Want to Make A Difference? YOU Can! It’s not just companies that are donating to build the new Cancer Centre. It’s the peo- ple who work there too. Employee groups are working together to raise funds through payroll deduction campaigns. It’s a simple process. You may be moved to organize a campaign at your place of work. All you need to do is call the Heroes of Hope Campaign Office at 905-721-4888 and you will get all the information and materials you need. If you wish, the Campaign Office will send a volunteer or staff member to make a special presentation for your group to inform your colleagues about the expertise the Cancer Centre will offer, what the state-of-the-art facility will look like inside, and what’s involved with construction. Then, we will give you and your fellow staff members information packages to review in private to determine your own giving. Employee campaigns are a great way to support cancer care in your own community. Ontario Motor Sales is leading the way. The staff there has pledged $4,200 already. “We’re behind the Heroes of Hope Campaign 100%,” says Paul Cross, Co-Chair of the Automotive Division. “Our team rallied behind the new Cancer Centre because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You don’t get a brand new Cancer Centre everyday. We ’v e all waited so long for this. We’re doing our part to make sure that this project is completed and that the doors open as soon as possible.” Launch Your Employee Group Campaign Today! Call the Campaign Office at 905-721-4888. When the opportunity is there, such as our Lottery, they’re right there backing us.” The current lottery sold out in the first month of its public launch setting a new record. “People get excited about the Early Bird prizes, Cars and Vacations that we give away to kick start the lottery,” commented Jim Szeman, Executive Director of the Foundation and founder of the Lottery. “This year we’ve added a new twist: free gas for a year generously donated by Esso to new car Early Bird prize winners.” The lottery, which will create its fourth instant millionaire, draws the grand prize of $1 mil- lion on March 28, 2003. At that time, one lucky ticket holder will also win a $300,000 Dream Home. With the best odds of any Lottery in Ontario, people have a one in seven chance at winning. “All I can say is,” added Powers, “I hope you bought your ticket and good luck in the draws”. 6 Reasons Why You Should Inform Us of Your Charitable Bequest 1.To ensure that The Oshawa General Hospital Foundation is aware of your intentions. 2.To confirm that the wording of your bequest properly identifies us as the recip- ient while avoiding unnecessary costs to your Estate. 3.To ensure that your gift goes to where you want it to go. 4.To ensure that your gift may be directed to the area within the hospital that may need it most. 5.To serve as inspiration to others who are considering making a gift. 6.Most importantly, so that we can get to know you and properly thank-you and honor you in person and in our newsletter. After two preliminary-round wins, the seventh-seeded Trojans (39-5) tipped off against the second-seed- ed Father Henry Carr Crusaders of To r onto in quarter-final action. The Crusaders rode off with a 64-45 vic- tory Thursday night, thus eliminat- ing Pickering High from the tourna- ment. The Trojans and Crusaders were in a nip-and-tuck battle through the open half, with Henry Carr leading by a scant four points (18-14) in a high-scoring first quarter, and up- ping the lead to five points (32-27) at the interval. The Crusaders, however, took the game to the Trojans in the third and fourth quarters, leading Pickering High by 10 (45-35) at the end of the third and then outscoring them 17-10 in the final stanza. Jerome Forde was the high scorer for the Trojans with 15 points. Antwi Atuahene led the Crusaders with 27. Thursday afternoon, the Trojans earned their quarter-final berth with a 73-59 victory over 10th-seed- ed Father Michael Goetz Gators of Mississauga in the second-round game. The contest was essentially over after the opening quarter as the Trojans shot the lights out, taking a commanding 26-5 lead. Pickering High continued to pour in the points in the second quarter, outscoring Goetz 18-10 for a re- sounding 44-15 lead. The Trojans were on cruise control in the second half, even though the Gators outscored Pickering High 24-17 in the final quarter. Ian Wight led the way with 16 points, followed by Jason Jordan with 12 and Forde with 11. The Trojans opened OFSAA play Wednesday afternoon with a 53-46 victory over the 13th-seeded Hill- crest Hawks from Ottawa. Pickering High led by seven (27-10) at the half and wasn’t seriously threatened by the Hawks in the final half. Jordan paced the attack with 15 points and Omar Green had 12. In semifinal action Friday, the top-seeded Eastern Commerce Saints played the fifth-ranked A.N. Myer Marauders from Niagara Falls. The other semifinal pitted Father Henry Carr against the host Cathe- dral Gaels of Hamilton. The gold- medal game was played Friday night in Hamilton. The result wasn’t available at press time. P PAGE 18 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 9, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Pickering ‘A’ team meets Port Perry in next round PICKERING —The Pickering Panthers minor peewee ‘A’ rep hockey team de-clawed the Cobourg Cougars in its Lakeshore League six-point playoff series, which ended with a series-clinching 1-1 tie last week. The Panthers will now meet Port Perry in the next round of the league playoffs. Panthers’ forward Blair Kim- ble scored the lone Pickering goal with a dazzling display of puck handling, assisted by Mark Frawley. Pickering held the Cougars at bay for the rest of the game with a fine effort from Karim Corringham, whose forechecking continued to frus- trate the Cougars’ defence. Mark Sterling performed dou- ble duty, both on defence and on the wing to help pull the Panthers through to the tie. Great defensive efforts by Christina Patterson, Dillon Bess, Eric Fox, Daryl Probert and Curtis Henderson all con- tributed to the critical tie, as Cobourg attempted to step up their physical game to stave off elimination. Pickering goaltender Lee Mel- nike made a number of out- standing saves to help the Pan- thers earn the tie. Pickering goaltender Derek Redmond worked the Panthers net in game 3, backstopping the Pickering peewees to an impor- tant 2-2 tie at Don Beer arena. Earlier in the series, Red- mond worked the pipes to bring home a 4-1 victory in Game 1 to set the tone for the series. Mel- nike returned to the net in Game 2 to help the Panthers de- liver a 9-3 thumping to the Cougars. Panthers’ team captain Jimmy Ianiero played an out- standing series, including a four-goal contribution in Game 2 for a total of five goals during the series. Speedster Daniel Fyfe worked his magic to deliver three goals throughout the se- ries, including two critical markers in the Game 1 victory. Kimble brought his total to three goals in the series with other key offensive contribu- tions by Tyler Kotsopoulos, Mark Frawley, Jessica Vella, Cameron Farrell and ‘Boomer’ (Derek) Wells with a crafty, well-positioned deflection from a blistering slapshot by Curtis Henderson. Bill Redmond coaches the Panthers, assisted by Rob Wells and Al Kimble. The trainer is Mark Vella.
