BY LESLEY BOVIE Staff Writer PICKERING —Local councillors are pushing the Region of Durham to move forward with an integrat- ed waste management system before the end of next year. “We, as a council, feel the time is long past to deal with this issue,” said Ward 2 Regional Councillor Mark Holland. “It’s time for the Region to stop stalling.” Pickering council voted unanimously Monday to approve a motion from Coun. Holland urging the Re- gion to commit to a curbside organic waste collection system and expanded recycling program across Durham before April 30. Pickering is also pushing for implementation to take place before the end of June for expanded recyclables and before Nov. 30 for or- ganics. Speaking to the dates, Coun. Holland said regional works staff has told him expanding the recycle pro- gram should be simple, but the collection of organics will require contract negotiations and finding loca- tions available to take the waste. “Jack McCorkell (commissioner of regional works) feels the date it should be ready for is the spring of 2004,” he said. “I think we can do it before November 2003. It’s ambitious but that’s exactly what the Region hasn’t been on this.” Durham hopes to achieve 50 per cent diversion by 2005 through an integrated waste management sys- tem, but debate over containers and collection among its southern municipalities has slowed the approval process. The issue of increased recyclables and curbside collection of organics has been debated by the Region since 1994, Coun. Holland said. But Peter Watson, Durham’s manager of waste management, said the Region can’t even begin to think about timelines until a consultant’s report, look- ing at various waste collection cost options, is brought P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, December 22, 2002 www.durhamregion.com Just 3 Days Left 423 BLOOR ST. Mr. Watson pointed out Uxbridge, Scugog, Brock and Clarington are moving forward with an integrated waste sys- tem, which gives the Region responsibility for collection, composting and disposal. Implementation of that sys- tem is slated for February, he said. But a waste agreement among Durham’s other four municipalities has been more difficult, Mr. Watson said, be- cause Oshawa and Whitby have their own waste collection trucks and Ajax and Pickering have long-term agreements with outside contractors. “The report is a major com- ponent of moving forward,” he said. Other food banks in the area are finding it tough as well, she said, adding Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank is actually running a drive to boost donations this Christmas. “You don’t usually have drives at Christmas,” Ms. Coulter said. “You usually run them spring and fall.” The St. Paul’s Thanksgiving Food Drive went well but donations soon dried up after that, she said. Usually, they continue to flow in until Christ- mas. “We were actually low on Kraft Dinner. I’ve never seen that,” Ms. Coulter said. With schools and churches begin- ning to chip in for the season, some items are starting to come in, but do- nations are still needed, she added. DURHAM —Tw o local men face charges in connection with an alleged cocaine smuggling ring following sev- eral arrests and home searches across the Greater Toronto Area. A Pickering man and an Ajax man were charged Wednesday by Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Officers made nine arrests and searched nine GTA residences, including one in Pickering. The RCMP alleges the nine have been involved in a crime network smuggling cocaine in to Canada and the United Kingdom from Panama and Jamaica. Police said they seized roughly 30 kilograms of cocaine after a year-long investigation. The cocaine was destined for the southern Ontario corridor, police say, stretching from Kitchener to Oshawa. The investigation is continuing and police say more charges may be laid. Lascelle Reid, 49, of Pickering and O’neil Murray, 34, of Ajax, are charged with conspiracy to import and traffic in a controlled substance. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, December 22, 2002 PAGE 5 A/P THE LACE PLACE 1698 Bayly St. at (Brock Rd.) 905-831-5223•416 286-5223 THOUSANDS OF YARDS OF DRAPERY AND UPHOLSTERY FABRICS value up to 39.98 per yard ALSO 50% OFF ALL CHRISTMAS FABRICS Starts Dec 26th to Dec 31st PER YARD BOXING WEEK Per Yard CONCERNED ABOUT YOUR FEET? Hospital patients get yule surprise AJAX — They’re putting smiles on faces of patients at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospi- tal again. The hospital auxiliary unit is handing out gifts to patients Tues- day, Dec. 24. “Giving to the patients of the hospital cheers them up and sometimes even makes their day,” said auxiliary treasurer and his- torian Shirley Rowland. “See- ing a smile on their face makes it all worthwhile.” The 250 active auxiliary mem- bers have been giving to the pa- tients every Christmas Eve since 1954. This year the giving received a boost when Eu- gene Moulder, general manager at Sears in the Pickering Town Centre, donated 20 pairs of baby pyjamas. “The things Sears is doing for the hospital is fantastic,’” noted the auxiliary’s Exy Arnold. P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, December 22, 2002 www.durhamregion.com It’s Christmas, not the holidays To the editor: Many times this season I have heard it is not politically correct to wish anyone ‘Merry Christmas’. Who determines what is and isn’t politically correct? Expressions like ‘the holidays’, ‘holiday lights’, ‘holiday shopping’, ‘holiday tree’ and even ‘holiday eve’ are becoming more prevalent, while the Christian reason for the season is being pushed further away. Why the term ‘holiday’? I usually have a happy holiday but it is in July each year, not in De- cember. Politically correct usually refers to an ex- pression that can be offensive or non-inclu- sive to other groups when used in the tradi- tional form. Changing the term to be non- offensive or more inclusive is usually a good idea. What is the reason here? Cer- tainly Christians are not looking to be of- fensive to anyone by saying ‘Merry Christ- mas’. Who are these people offended by Christmas? Is Christianity the only religion that has a feast that is offensive? Can I still wish happy Hanukkah to my Jewish friends or is that politically incorrect? Can I wish Muslims well during their holy month of Ramadan or is that too politically incorrect? Maybe this push to change our culture is more about economics and the almighty dollar and less about political correctness. Who are most of those people doing Christ- mas shopping? Are most Christians? Maybe it is time for Christians to stand up and say they do not do holiday shopping and look for stores and manufacturers where they can do Christmas shopping. Let’s not forget Christmas is the reason for the season and Christ is the reason for Christmas. Good wishes should be encour- aged, not deemed politically incorrect. I wish everyone a very merry Christmas. Editorial &OPINIONS PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER DECEMBER 22, 2002 As we bid adieu to 2002, the year ahead holds many exciting possibili- ties for Ajax and Pickering. But expect a rocky start. With an $18 million deficit for 2002-03, Rouge Valley Health System is going to have some difficult decisions to make at the beginning of the year, ac- cording to chief executive officer and president Hume Martin. Asked if the level of services in Ajax and Pickering will be affected, Mr. Martin carefully responded he felt the “quality” of services would be im- pacted. He noted 120 of 160 hospitals across Ontario are facing deficits. Just as challenging will be the res- olution of several long-standing is- sues. The Seaton land swap will con- tinue with heated debate. Perhaps the meeting with Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Chris Hodgson is the perfect time for the Province to make a fresh start and work together on Seaton’s development. That will take not only a willingness on the part of the ministry to come clean with the details of the swap, but a leap of faith from Pickering council as well. The first ‘A’-side reactor at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station should be coming back online just as the secondary plan for Seaton is wrap- ping up. Both are due to take place this June. It will be interesting to see if Ontario Power Generation is able to meet this deadline so long after the original targeted restart date. With recent cries of an energy cri- sis, the pressure is on. News this week that several fire protection improve- ments will be delayed until after the restart is putting all eyes on the ener- gy producer. Speaking of things to watch for, a new shelter servicing abused women in west Durham plans to open its doors in the fall in Ajax. Officials with the Ajax-Pickering Women’s Centre (APWC) admit they had hoped to have the shelter opened much earlier, even in 2002 rather than 2003, but the project was tied up in due process. This promises to be one of the year’s highlights as members of the public have been inquiring as to the shelter’s opening for some time. Shel- ter board of directors’ president Sher- ry Senis said she expects a waiting list for its services to form soon after. The year 2003 holds many chal- lenges and much promise for some long-standing issues around Ajax and Pickering. Now if we could only come to some resolution on a future airport in north Pickering. But perhaps that’s asking for too much. Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com On health, power and give me some shelter For a man and a government thoroughly committed to uni- versal medicare, Prime Minister Jean Chretien and his federal Liberals sure have a funny way of showing it. Over the last few federal election campaigns and often- times in between, the PM has been a staunch defender of the principles of the National Health Act. Against Preston Man- ning and then Stockwell Day, Mr. Chretien vigorously debated in defence of keeping our system, a view shared by the vast majority of Canadians in poll after poll. But, to coin a 1990s movie phrase, provincial premiers, and finance and health ministers have told the feds over and over, ‘Show me the money.’ So too, did Roy Romanow in his recent report on health care. Mr. Romanow said the only way to sustain health care as we know it today, is through a massive cash infusion from the feds on the order of at least $15 billion more between now and 2006. Now comes word the PM, perhaps unsurprisingly, doesn’t have the money requested by the provinces to maintain the sys- tem. Finance Minister Janet Ecker, in Ottawa to meet with her provincial counterparts said, “We were disappointed that we hadn’t had more of a commitment - the need is now for of the provinces,” she said. Mr. Chretien confidently asserted in a year-end interview, “the debate is focussed quite well. This notion of two-tier health care has disappeared.” In yet another interview, he stat- ed, “There is a large consensus in Canada. There will be no pri- vatization of health care.” Such sentiments are shared by many, but only the feds can decide if health care remains viable much longer. They alone have the funds to make or break the system which is currently paid for on about an 86-14 per cent ratio by the provinces. Any new money must come from Ottawa. While the feds will undoubtedly kick in some money, Mr. Chretien is crying poor. Federal Finance Minister John Manley is forecasting a surplus in the $2 billion to $8 billion range this year, but the real money lies in the vast employment insurance surplus which some have suggested is in the $30 billion to $40 billion range. The EI surplus is held to provide for a rainy day, i.e., a catastrophic depression, but experts assert no more than $10 billion to $15 billion is needed for such a case. It’s time for the prime minister to take some of that em- ployment insurance surplus and make it work for our health care. It’s the least the feds can do. PM can’t turn back on health-care needs Poll after poll confirms public expects money to be there to sustain system Lesley Bovie Staff Writer shouston@durhamregion.com The year ahead promises plenty of news in Ajax and Pickering www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY EDITION, December 22, 2002 PAGE 7 A/P TRIED TESTED & TRUE0% Purchase Financing up to 48 months‡also available on 2003 Cavalier, Malibu, Impala, Monte Carlo, Alero, Aurora, Venture, Silhouette, Astro, Blazer, TrailBlazer, Bravada, S-10,Silverado and AvalancheFor the latest information visit us at gmcanada.com,drop by your local Chevrolet • Oldsmobile Dealer or call us at 1-800-GM-DRIVE.¥No purchase necessary. You say to yourself, “I need to look rejuvenated but a facelift at my age? Or have others made comments to you such as, “what’s wrong, why are you frowning, are you in a bad mood today?” And your response would be, “I was fine until now.” Stress, smiling, laughing, frowning and the sun all contribute to squint lines (crows feet) and frown lines on the forehead. Botox is a purified protein which is injected in the overactive muscle which in turn relaxes the muscle and the wrinkles or lines are smoothed away for a period of 3 - 4 months. This non- invasive treatment takes about 15 minutes. Results are evident in 3 - 14 days. No wonder it’s the fastest growing cosmetic procedure today. It’s a lunch time favorite in our practice. Going for a hike may not be the first thing to come to mind when pursuing winter activities but is an excellent way to get outside and get some exercise. “Many people become less active at this time of year, “ explains Chris Arnott, a public health nurse with the Durham Region Health Depart- ment. “Canada’s winters are long but that shouldn’t keep residents from getting exercise. Walking can help improve fitness, health and mental well-being and winter walks are a lot of fun.” There are many trails located throughout Durham Region offering facilities for walking and other phys- ical activities. Canada’s Physical Activity Guide recommends increasing your activity level to 30 minutes, four to seven days a week. Taking a brisk walk can help to achieve optimum health ben- efits. A recent health department sur- vey found more Durham Region res- idents are using area trails to help in- crease physical activity. In 2001, 53 per cent reported using recreational trails compared to 47 per cent in 1999. “A f amily hike is a great way to unwind from the busy holiday rush and to spend time together,” adds Ms. Arnott. “Research has shown active par- ents tend to have active children, which helps to promote lifelong physical activity.” Hike Ontario, a non-profit organi- zation representing the interests of walkers and hikers across Ontario, notes that winter hiking requires ad- ditional planning to help ensure safety and comfort. First let someone know of your location and expected time of return, dress for the weather and pack fluids and snacks if you’ll be out for a long time. “The bottom line is to remain physically active throughout the en- tire year to reap the health benefits,” says Harold Sellers of Hike Ontario. For more information on Durham Region trails or ways to increase physical activity, call the Durham Region Health Department at 905- 723-8521 or 1-800-841-2729, ext. 2272. That’s why I lis- tened very, very carefully while in- terviewing Dr. Linus Pauling, a two- time Nobel Prize winner. Dr. Paul- ing was a biochemist noted for many important discoveries. The public remembers him for his theo- ry that large amounts of what he called ‘Big C’ prevent the common cold. But as the sniffing season is here, what about Zinc, Echinacea, Jewish chicken soup? Or is the best remedy William Osler’s? Dozens of studies have been car- ried out around the world about the effect of Big C on the common cold. One study involved U.S. Marines, not known for complaining about anything. One group was given C and the rest a placebo pill. The re- sults were basically similar. Dr. Pauling always argued, how- ever, that poor results were the re- sult of using inadequate amounts of C. In another study 2,795 people re- ceived from 1,000 to 4,000 mil- ligrams of C daily for three months. Others received a placebo. During that time the vitamin C group still caught over 5,000 colds! Possibly Dr. Pauling will eventu- ally be proven right. But currently the general consensus is that vita- min C has little effect on preventing colds. But a few studies indicate it may ease the symptoms and shorten the cold. This year North Americans will spend over $70 million purchasing echinacea. It’s not a new remedy. In the early 1600s this plant was used by Indians to treat snakebite, aches and the common cold. Today people who take echi- nacea do so largely on word-of- mouth accounts that it works. Test- tube research suggests they may be right since echinacea stimulates im- mune cells that fight bacteria and viruses. So theoretically it should provide protection from the com- mon cold. And several studies have had good results. But what about using echinacea long before a cold strikes? On the surface that approach sounds rea- sonable. But some researchers claim that people who take echi- nacea for months may be even more susceptible to colds. Studies show that after eight weeks‚ use echi- nacea can switch from stimulating the immune system to suppressing it. It’s also prudent for patients who are pregnant, allergic to plants and who suffer from autoimmune dis- eases such as multiple sclerosis to stay away from echinacea. Those who praise the benefits of echinacea should remember one im- portant fact. It’s been proven over and over that if you give a placebo to patients suffering from colds or other illnesses 40 per cent feel bet- ter! What does help the common cold? Aspirin has been used for years to reduce the fever and ease muscle aches. But don’t give As- pirin to children with fever as it can increase the risk of Reye’s Syn- drome, a potentially fatal disease. Chicken soup is an old remedy. Like any hot liquid it makes the nose run more. This helps to rid the virus from the nose more quickly. More important, it tastes good and makes you feel better. Possibly Sir William Osler had the right prescription. This world- famous physician suggested the best way to treat a cold was “to hang your hat on the bedpost, get into bed, start drinking whisky. When you see two hats stop!” Here’s another thought. Why not remember the best remedy of all is “tincture of time”. Colds usually run their course regardless of what you do. W. Telus Lightning get the point –– their first Durham women’s team gives up last-second goal then lose in OT DURHAM —Sometimes a loss almost seems like a win, espe- cially to the Telus Lightning women’s hockey team. Telus recorded its first point of the season, a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime decision to the Missis- sauga Ice Bears in National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) action at the Ajax Com- munity Centre Tuesday night. It was the Lightning’s 21st loss of the season. The hard-luck Lightning had the game well in hand before disaster struck in the worst possible way. Mississauga’s Sara Bauer scored with one second remaining on the clock to send the game into over- time. In overtime, Bauer struck down the Lightning with a goal at the 2:17 mark to ice the win. Wo rst of all, Telus was leading through most of Tuesday’s game, ahead 1-0 after the first period and 3-1 after 40 minutes of play. The third-period, however, was all Mis- sissauga, which scored two unan- swered goals. Erin Rourke scored twice for the Lightning. Jackie Jarrell notched the other goal. Assisting were Brenda Reynolds with two, Laura Church, Christianne Trem- ills and Katie Quinn. For part of us went with you. The day God called you home. Merry Christmas Sadly missed by your daughter Karmen, son-in-law Vern, grandchildren Loren, Natalie and V.J.
