Sharon Thomas of Transport Canada said a draft of the airport zoning restrictions (AZR) would probably be released in January for public consultation. The regulations are needed to ensure the “safety of those on the ground and in the air. Our goal is to im- prove safety,” she told Ajax council. Keith Reilly, a civil aviation safety inspector with Tr ansport Canada, said the height restrictions aren’t onerous for Ajax, as they would be set at more than 1,000 feet. As you get closer to the airport lands, the allowable land uses decreases, he added. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) will make a decision on the airport, although the federal government would have to give final approval, which Ms. Thomas said wouldn’t come during the current mandate. Putting the AZRs in place would “preserve options” for the airport and “help municipalities with effective municipal planning,” Ms. Thomas pointed out. “All existing structures and land uses currently in use are considered legally non-conforming and are grandfathered,” she said. Mr. Reilly said the regulations are “federal law, so they must be complied with”. He added noise matters don’t form part of the regu- lations and are under the mandate of the GTAA. (of equal or lesser value) Lighting a fire under students Teens Tackling Tobacco aims to stop students before they start BY MIKE RUTA Staff Writer DURHAM —You are the tar- get of tobacco companies, more than 300 students from 55 Durham elementary schools were told in Whitby this week. The sixth annual Teens Tack- ling Tobacco event was held for Grade 7 and 8 pupils at the Durham District School Board’s Education Centre. The tobacco-use-prevention workshop saw youths from the public board, Durham Catholic District School Board and the Peterborough Victoria Northum- berland and Clarington Catholic District School Board visit five, 25-minute pit stops dealing with the hazards of smoking, the On- tario Tobacco Control Act, sec- ond-hand smoke, and the envi- ronment. The fifth pit stop, led by Mary Sue O’Connor, a Durham Region Health Department public health nurse, focused on tobacco adver- tising. “(Youths are) the targets and they really need to make a choice about whether they’re going to be hooked by the (tobacco) ad- vertising,” she said in an inter- view. At her pit stop, students heard that tobacco companies know that after the age of 20 almost no one starts smoking. To maintain their profits, and because over 45,000 Canadians die from to- bacco-related illnesses every year, Ms. O’Connor said tobacco companies need at least 250,000 new customers every year. She told students tobacco companies’even seek new smok- ers in the three- to six-year age range in films such as ‘101 Dal- matians’. Ms. O’Connor claims in that movie alone there are 299 im- ages of tobacco. “They’re not even aware of it,” she told students. “Two hun- dred and ninety-nine times in that movie they’re being subject- ed to images of tobacco prod- ucts.” Students interviewed Wednes- day said they were definitely get- ting the message loud and clear. Alicia Guzzo, a Grade 7 stu- dent at St. Francis de Sales Catholic School in Ajax, said she doesn’t plan to start smoking. “I know it’s bad for me and... people who smoke get lung can- cer and die, and I don’t want to die from smoking,” she said. Alicia said the workshop was “very effective” in educating young people. “I think nobody who came today is going to smoke,” she said. Jessica Forrest, a Grade 8 pupil at R.A. Sennett Public School in Whitby, said she was struck by the fact that 18 per cent of Durham youths aged 12 to 19 smoke. She thought the numbers would be a lot higher. “I won’t smoke,” Jessica said, noting most smokers start at her age and can’t quit. Daniella Peligra, a Grade 8 pupil at St. Anthony Daniel Catholic School in Pickering, said the event was “awesome. “I knew that tobacco affected the environment, but I didn’t know how much.” Students heard Canadian young people smoke roughly six million cigarettes a day. “I’m so excited because when I go back (to my school) I can tell my friends, teachers and the rest of the school,” Daniella said. She said her sister smokes and “I want to help her stop because it’s really important.” Kayley Patterson is a Grade 8 student at S.A. Cawker Public School in Port Perry. She also noted the environmental impact of making cigarettes. “It caught my attention that so many trees are cut down for it,” Kayley said. She had already decided not to light up “but this made me de- cide definitely that I will never smoke.” Kayley said she already en- courages her dad to quit and what she heard at the event will increase her efforts. Public health nurse Sue Cock- burn-Gillespie in an interview said the four students from each participating school return to their schools and create strate- gies to increase awareness of to- bacco issues and discourage smoking amongst their peers. “It’s up to the kids to decide what they want to do,” she said, noting in the past students have held poster contests and made public address announcements. The health department, partic- ipating school boards and Durham Lives work together to put on Teens Tackling Tobacco. This logo accompanied one of the ‘pit stops’in the Teens Tack- ling Tobacco session at the Durham District School Board’s education centre. The annual event brings elementary school students together to re- inforce prevention strategies. Police Briefs November 17, 2002 Bandits suspected of hitting record store for second time PICKERING ––Tw o bandits with a sense of irony robbed a Kingston Road music store called Déjà vu Discs for the second time in two weeks. Durham Regional Police said the masked men, one brandishing a knife, burst into the store at 650 Kingston Rd. at 8:50 p.m. The 21-year-old clerk was marched into a back room at knifepoint, while his accomplice kept a lookout. Police said the culprits got away with cash. The amount was not disclosed. Police suspect the same two rob- bers staged a similar knifepoint heist at the store on Oct.30, at which time a 32- year-old employee was uninjured. The holdup squad is investigating. Woman crashes through coffee shop AJAX ––An elderly female driver and a coffee shop patron suffered minor injuries when a Buick Regal crashed through the café Thursday morning. Durham Regional Police said the 72-year-old woman accidentally accel- erated and drove into Fantasty’s Café, at 75 Bayly St., at 11:30 a.m. A female customer was struck as the vehicle crashed through the glass front window. She and the driver were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police said the restaurant sus- tained extensive damage inside and outside. The Ward 1 regional councillor and Huron Wendat First Nation representa- tive have come up with a report asking Pickering council to protect native bur- ial and heritage sites by creating a min- imum 120-metre “archeological her- itage zone” around all watercourses. If passed, the report will be viewed as a treaty, with a signing afterwards between members of council and the Huron First Nation. “This is a very historical moment for the First Nations to be a part of the process instead of reading about it af- terwards,” Coun. Brenner said. The report also recommends no development take place within the heritage zone until approved by an independent archeological assessment “completed to the sat- isfaction of planning staff and the most directly affected First Na- tion”. An archeological master plan should also be developed to incor- porate information on significant native sites. Under the plan, ex- humation and reburial of human remains for the purpose of facili- tating development would be pro- hibited. Mr. Grey Eagle said there has- n’t been such an agreement since the Gun Shot Treaty of 1791. Back then, Lieutenant-Gover- nor John Graves Simcoe declared natives had the right to hunt, fish and trap “within 16 feet on both sides of all said creeks, within 66 feet on both sides of all rivers, and within 99 feet of all lakes and is- lands”, he said. Those rights were promised “as long as the grass grows and water runs and as long as the British government is in exis- tence”, he added. Before Monday night’s sign- ing, the Huron Wendat First Na- tion will hold a smudge ceremony to cleanse the participants and then call down their ancestors through song, said Mr. Grey Eagle. I was a junk food enthusiast. Pop, chips and chocolate. I loved to bake for my husband and my kids (and of course myself). I could drink up to 24 cola drinks in a week! I was always having second helpings of the food I cooked. I remember that I was never satisfied until the huge bag of potato chips was empty. I ate when I was bored. I ate when I was nervous. I ate for no reason at all! I know that there are lots of people out there who are trapped in similar behaviour cycles. I was praying for an answer I had struggled with my weight for years. I had embarked on many diets. Most diets “worked” for awhile but inevitably my old eating patterns and my appetite for junk food would resurface and I would put that weight back on again. I was at a desperate stage. I was reduced to sending for those “miracle pills” that “melt fat away while you sleep” but in my heart I was praying for an answer that would work and work permanently. In our home there are lots of stairs. About a year ago I began to notice that the stairs were becoming a burden to me. I was short of breath and I felt tightness across my chest. I knew intuitively that weight was now becoming a health issue. I resolved to do something about this. I was skeptical I saw the Positive Changes Hypnosis Advertisements in the paper. I read them and re-read them. I was the ultimate skeptic but I kept reading the ads for over a month. I liked what I read but it all sounded too good to be true. How could hypnosis work? Eventually I called. I went for a free hypnotic consultation. I signed up. I got home, thought about it again and then called and canceled. My evaluator simply said “why don’t you call someone who has been through our program?” I did just that and I joined in November. Seven months later I was at my goal weight, down 55 lbs with my conf idence and self esteem soaring. I began to change From my very first personal hypnosis session my attitude and my relationship to food began to change! My husband and I let our children have treats only on weekends. That very f irst weekend after starting at Positive Changes Hypnosis, even though the family had junk food, I didn’t want any. I didn’t feel at all deprived. I recognized that I was immediately experiencing some very positive changes. My cravings for junk food, including pop, disappeared. It is time to face the truth I would say to anyone who can recognize any part of themselves in my story...don’t embark on another diet. Once the diet ends...your old behaviour is just waiting to re-surface. The weight will typically pile back on plus a few more pounds. Remember this...if you keep on doing what you have been doing you will get what you have been getting. Make a really positive change in YOU Instead of yo yo diets, learn through hypnosis how to change your mind, your appetite and your destructive eating behaviour. The answer is already within you! If you only do one thing for yourself this year, let it be, to join this program. You will enjoy the program, you will love the atmosphere and the caring people there. Best wishes to you, Colette. News Advertiser readership study under way Durham urges flea market solution At the Wednesday meeting vendors filled the council cham- bers and pleaded with council to find a way to make First Pro ac- commodate them until their new building is ready. The vendors say eviction on Jan. 31 would mean laying off the approxi- mately 1,000 people employed at the weekend stalls and could put them out of business for good. They suggested in the interim they would be willing to move to another part of the trade centre propertyy. But First Pro representative Ornella Richichi said the compa- ny must proceed with demolition in February in order to begin construction in time to meet its obligations to its new tenants. She asked council to respect its mandate in the planning process and not meddle in matters that are outside its jurisdiction. There is a signed deal with the tenant for September, said Ms. Richichi. “We have to pro- ceed. If we have any delay, given the construction season, if we can’t commence demolition in February and start construction, we’ll lose that year,” she said. That would mean the tenant would lose the 2003 Christmas season, the most profitable time of the year, she added. Councillors were sympathetic to the plight of the vendors but some questioned whether the planning process was the place to resolve the differences. The Region’s solicitor, Brian Roy, agreed. “If the desire of council is to have these people stay there or have alternative accommodation, it’s not really in our control. It’s a contractual issue,” he said. Still, said Pickering Council- lor Maurice Brenner, it was in- cumbent upon council to take a risk and at least try to find a so- lution for the vendors. “We’ve heard the solicitor say it’s unprecedented and there’s a risk we’d lose at the OMB. Any- time we make a decision in plan- ning there’s always a risk. We have to take it in the context of the number of individuals in the gallery whose Christmas gift will be unemployment. Take the risk. These individuals are worth it.” DURHAM from page 1 P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, November 17, 2002 www.durhamregion.com Refuse to pay GST on debt retirement, it’s the only solution To the editor: Ta ke a stand, you Ontario wimps. Editorial &OPINIONS PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER NOVEMBER 17, 2002 Casey died Friday morning, at home in his sleep. He was a 13-year- old poodle who was showered with love and knew how to give it back, in spades. He owned T-shirts and sweaters and had his own Christmas stocking every year. I doted on him, and when he died, I was devastated. I was also consumed with guilt. I was full of ‘should haves’ all weekend. I should’ve taken him to the after-hours emergency clinic. I should’ve known he was dying and I should’ve held him. I should’ve cud- dled him more. I should’ve paid more attention to him Thursday morning, the last time I saw him alert. I should’ve told him I loved him one last time. Guilt is probably the most com- mon emotion resulting from the death of a pet, according to information I found on the Internet Monday. As the pet’s primary caretaker, all decisions regarding the pet’s well-being are made by the owner. Trying to turn back time and ‘rewrite the script’ is a natural response in people who are grieving. And people grieving a pet can ex- perience “more intense” symptoms than people grieving people, says Julie Chatterton, bereavement co-or- dinator with Hospice Durham. That’s because people put all their feelings on their pet, she says. The Web site petplace.com points out pets provide the closest thing to unconditional love we’ll ever experi- ence, and yet, as another site acknowl- edges, the grief we feel over their loss is minimized by society. “He was only a dog,” or “get over it already,” are common responses we might hear. Three days after Casey’s death, I was still having trouble. Whether you’re grieving a pet or a person, there’s no difference in the process, Ms. Chatterton says. “Grief isn’t a tidy process,” she notes. “It can take years sometimes.” She suggests creating some kind of a memorial for your pet, perhaps with photos, and have a ceremony where you light a candle for him. Each mem- ber of the family can describe a spe- cial memory or thought about the pet. “Celebrate his life,” urges Ms. Chat- terton. “It may get weepy, but that’s OK. It’s a big loss, a big hole in your life right now.” If you get teary at inappropriate moments like I do, such as at work, Ms. Chatterton advises deliberately focusing your thoughts on your pet loss when you’re alone, and “let the tears come.” Seven months after the death of her own pet, she still experi- ences tears. “It’s very, very normal,” she assures. If you feel very guilty over your pet’s death, it means you loved the an- imal a lot, she suggests. Animals can sense how much you love them, she adds. I try to hold that thought. Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Guilt and grief are normal when you lose beloved pet For most services dependent on government funding, the waiting game is par for the course, a natural part of the process. Requests are made for needed cash and administrators sit by the phone, fax machine or mailbox tapping their fingers as they pray for the funding they need to continue. But for Hospice Durham, long delays or refusals for fund- ing means terminally ill people here die on waiting lists. It’s as simple as that. As Durham’s population grows and ages, Hospice Durham, which provides a variety of services to terminally ill patients, will only get busier and more necessary. The hospice currently runs on a budget of $72,000, enough only to provide for 3.5 positions. Hospice Durham executive director Cheryl MacLeod says her organization needs six full-time positions to properly serve its clientele. The hospice needs staff members to work closely with its trained volunteers to make the inevitable process of dying eas- ier. A typical Hospice Durham team includes the patient, mem- bers of his or her family, physicians, nurses, social workers, community support services, occupational therapists, spiritual counsellors and trainers and co-ordinators. While much of the effort is provided for by professionals, the element of simply being there to help those who are near the end is essential to providing a humane quality of life. Hospice Durham staff have been backed up by 140 volun- teers who put in 13,000 hours of volunteer time last year, an average of nearly 100 hours apiece. That’s an incredible record of service but the reality is that demands for palliative care out- strip the ability of the hospice to provide service. There is al- ready a growing waiting list for services and the hospice, with- out enough full-time staff in place, now closes its doors Fri- days. Full-timers are necessary to properly organize the range of services needed and to co-ordinate volunteers in the best possible way. Ms. MacLeod says pleas for money from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care have fallen on deaf ears. A min- istry spokesman claims the hospice request for more cash has been looked into but Ms. MacLeod says no meetings or contact on the issue have taken place between herself and ministry staff. With more services being provided outside of traditional hospitals and clinics, Hospice Durham must continue as a vital, important part of our health-care package from cradle to grave. The ministry must come through and meet funding requests from Hospice Durham. Strategists at the University of Ontario Institute of Technol- ogy, opening in Oshawa next fall, have their eyes on meeting the needs of the region. Recognizing that Durham Region is home to two of Cana- da’s largest nuclear power plants, and keeping in mind the double cohort – the university will offer Canada’s first stand- alone nuclear engineering de- gree program. The four-year Honours Bachelor of Engineer- ing in Nuclear Engineering de- gree is being touted as the most comprehensive program of its kind in Canada. “There has never been a more exciting time to study and work in nuclear engineering,” says Dr. George Bereznai, dean of the School of Energy Engi- neering and Nuclear Science at the University of Ontario Insti- tute of Technology. “Globally, as the population continues to grow, the need to generate elec- tricity increases. Nuclear power is the most cost-effective and environmentally safe way of meeting that need. “With at least 500 nuclear specialists expected to retire over the next five years in On- tario alone, we need a new gen- eration of nuclear engineers to design, operate and maintain the most advanced and efficient nuclear reactors.” The university’s nuclear en- gineering program will produce graduates with the expertise to work and manage the work of others in one or more areas of research, development, design, maintenance, operation and de- commissioning of nuclear power plants and related facili- ties. Students will learn nuclear physics, materials science and risk analysis, as well as the de- sign of nuclear power plants. Computer simulation plays a major role in students’ under- standing of nuclear processes. At Ontario’s first laptop-based university, each student will use a current model of the IBM ThinkPad and benefit from fully networked classrooms and learning spaces. In addition to completing assignments and conducting research, students will use laptop computers to simulate the operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants. “Our program will offer the most extensive computer simu- lation of nuclear power plants of any engineering program in Ontario,” notes Dr. Bereznai. Research in nuclear engi- neering at the university will initially focus on three key areas. The first, nuclear infor- mation management, includes finding methods to record and store nuclear processes for cur- rent and future practitioners. Research will also include the development of a high-quality simulator to test the design of advanced CANDU reactors. Research into the management of spent fuel, which is highly radioactive yet contains large amounts of unused energy, will examine the social acceptability of developing facilities for its long-term storage and disposal. First-of-its-kind nuclear engineering degree offered George Bereznai, Dean School of Energy Engineering and Nuclear Science Professor Bereznai was Atomic Energy of Canada Limit- ed's Chair Professor in Nuclear Engineering at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok from 1995 to 2001. In that role he was responsible for the planning and delivery of a human resources development pro- ject that included the design of a nu- clear engineering curriculum com- prising bachelor’s, master’s and doc- toral programs. Before that, Profes- sor Bereznai enjoyed a 29-year ca- reer at Ontario Hydro, where he managed the acquisition and opera- tion of full-scope nuclear power plant training simulators. An honours graduate in electrical engineering from the University of Adelaide in Australia, Dr. Bereznai received his M.Eng. and PhD from McMaster Univer- sity. Applying to the nuclear engineering degree program Students interested in the nuclear engineering degree pro- gram at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with a minimum aver- age of 70 per cent and a mini- mum of 70 per cent in maths and sciences. This includes: ❑ under the new curriculum, six 12U and M credits including English (ENG4U) with a mini- mum of 60 per cent, physics, advanced functions and intro- ductory calculus, chemistry, geometry and discrete math, OR; ❑ six OAC credits including English OA1 with a minimum of 60 per cent, physics, calculus, chemistry, and algebra and geometry. The Bachelor of Engineer- ing in Nuclear Engineering has been developed to meet the re- quirements of the Canadian En- gineering Accreditation Board. The health department has marked Nov. 17 to 23 as Drug Aw areness Week. As outlined in Ontario legis- lation, parents are liable for any alcohol their teen or their friends drink in the parent’s home or on their property. If guests at a party in a parent’s home drink and in- jure themselves or someone else, the parents may be sued. It is illegal to give alcohol to anyone under 19, and homeown- ers’ insurance may be null and void if injuries and damages are the result of serving alcohol to underage teens. “As a homeowner, you’re legally responsible for what goes on in your home even if you’re not at home, don’t know that guests are drinking or if guests have brought their own alcohol,” says Heather Tucker, a public health nurse with the Health Department. “Parents have the ability to influence their children. The pamphlet offers suggestions on setting limits, providing a safe environment and communicating with teens on this important issue,” adds Ms. Tucker. Cost of animal services going up Pickering, Ajax and Whitby pitch in for service PICKERING —The cost of local animal control services is going up slightly next year. Pickering Ajax Whitby (PAW) Animal Services plans to spend $678,500 in operating and $30,000 in capital for a total bill of $708,500 in 2003. That’s up 2.6 per cent in op- erating costs and additional $1,000 for capital. “Our biggest expense is wages,” said Ward 2 City Councillor Bill McLean, who sits on the PAW joint animal services committee for Pick- ering. Like most employers, PAW has to adjust its salaries for inflation each year, he said. Those adjustments amount to $20,000 in 2003. Pickering councillors approved the budget earlier this week, which puts Pickering’s share of the bill (based on per capita) at $250,799.65. Last year the City paid $243,730.49. Coun. McLean, who has in the past questioned the quality of service Pickering gets from PAW, even sug- gesting the City should break out of the arrangement, said he’s happy with its new direction. “They’ve made a lot of changes and I think they’ve greatly improved their level of service,” he said. Future initiatives for PAW include launching a Web site where unwant- ed pets can be adopted out and own- ers can list lost pets. Coun. McLean said he’d also like to see a database staff can use to monitor calls, track dangerous ani- mals, and invite more interaction with local schools to promote pet care among young people. Ajax and Whitby will pay $207,850.60 and $249,849.75, re- spectively, for services next year. Certain yoga postures will stim- ulate a number of critical glands located in the head, neck and chest. Inverted postures such as shoulder stand, are thought to improve circulation to these glands, which can then function more efficiently. Forward bends tend to lower blood pres- sure and pacify the adrenals and other components of the sympathetic nervous system. Since stress taxes the immune system, meditation, relaxing and restorative poses can play an important role in immune system health. Along with the supporting lymph flow throughout the body, yoga can help stimulate the lymph nodes. These specialized glands are central to the preven- tion of disease and filtration of wastes and other unwanted matter in our systems. Sun Salutation is a great way to stimulate lymph flow all through the body. The Sun Salutation is a yoga posture flow of complete and stimula- tion exercises. Yoga can release tension and increase flexibility both in your mind and body, thereby improving your spirit. If the body is healthy, the mind becomes clear and you become more able to accept life’s chal- lenges. Yoga can bring about changes in mental, physical and emotional planes. The same is true for our car, including antifreeze and a thinner oil. But how many of us are aware of the need to “shape up”, to ready our bodies and muscles for the start up of that new ski or hockey season. Healthy feet and ankles must be fit and strong to act as accelerators, steering, brakes and shock absorbers. Any weakness to these extremities can lead to injuries and even the end of a sea- son of participation. A fitness program should begin in the early fall to ready yourself by the sign of the first flakes. For skiing, strong quads and abdominal muscles are most important. Knee bands, sit-ups, crunches and skipping rope all help to strengthen your quadri- ceps and abdominal muscles. Racquet sports are equally benefi- cial in maintaining cardiovascular benefits and reaction time. Greater flexibility allows for a wider range of motion and mini- mizes the chance of strains. Stretch antagonistic muscle groups to maintain a point of tightness, hold for 40 - 60 seconds and release. Repeat each stretch three times. Strength of muscles is also important but overdoing it can lead to muscles tears. Warm-ups are most impor- tant before beginning the activity especially for cold weather sports. We idle our cars on cold winter days, but are we as kind to our bodies? Warm-up exercises help stretch muscles and allow for greater mobility. This minimizes the chance of injuries by allowing the muscles to be more responsive and act as better shock absorbers. Stream the part of the body used in the activity, for example, your legs in skiing or skating when warming up but also do upper body circular arm swings. A cool down period after the activity is also important. A sauna or whirlpool followed by a cool shower will help. Stop the activity when you’re tired. Remember, more injuries occur on that last run of the day when your fatigue hampers your reac- tive time and you are not paying attention. Winter sports require prop- er clothing. Upper body layering will keep you warmer and always wear a hat to prevent heat loss. Proper foot wear includes insulat- ed waterproof boots or shoes. Socks must remain dry to prevent the occurrence of frostbite. Those suffering from pre-existing circu- latory problems such as diabetes or Raynaud’s Disease should con- sult their medical doctor. Ski boots and skates should fit properly for a safe and uneventful activity. If the boots or skates are too loose, toes quickly get irritated in the toe box. If they are too tight, pressure leads to blisters and abrasions causing painful feet which may compro- mise control and lead to injuries or accidents. Tight boots or skates can compromise control and lead to injuries or accidents. Tight boots or skates can compromise circulation. Do not put children in hand-me-downs. Skates that are too large or wide may lack proper ankle support leading to strains, sprains or even fractures. Runners in the winter may unconsciously change their foot strike pattern which can lead to overuse injuries. To increase trac- tion on slippery surfaces, runners may land with the entire foot instead of the natural heel-to-toe strike. lateral slippage may lead to groin pulls. Some runners are trying spikes that fit over their shoes when jogging in icy areas. Some problems to watch out for are: 1) FROSTBITE:Skin freezes when exposed to cold temperatures and high winds. With longer exposure blood ves- sels constrict and skin colour changes from blue to white. A feeling of numbness or burning may indicate frostbite. Wet feet are more prone to frostbite as are people with previous history of frostbite. Prevention involves changing wet clothing and avoid- ing the use of alcoholic beverages. Shield yourself from high winds and keep moving. Treatment involves putting fingers in armpit touching warm skin. Remove clothing from the affected area and avoid rubbing the skin. Immerse the affected area in warm (40c) water (20 - 30 min- utes) until the affected area turns red. If blisters develop, add an antiseptic such as Betadine to the skin. If no water is available, keep affected areas warm with blan- kets or in contact with other per- son’s skin. See your medical doc- tor as soon as possible. 2) BLISTERS:Friction from ill-fitting foot gear can cause blis- ters. Do not pop a blister as it will then more easily infect. If it breaks on its own, use an antiseptic such as Betadine and cover with a ster- ile bandage. 3) HYPOTHERMIA: This affects the entire body and involves loss of body heat. Initially shivering will generate more body heat. If shivering stops, a person is not necessarily warmed, and this is sometimes a warning sign. Continued expo- sure to cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia. This is a medical emergency and profes- sional care should be sought. 4)STRAINS AND SPRAINS:These are common especially with skiing and skat- ing. They should be treated with rest, ice compressions and elevate (RICE). Winter can be a fun season if proper care is taken. Attention to muscle flexibility, proper cloth- ing and warm-up exercises will ensure a season of injury free fun. Oxford provides personalized pro- grams for all age groups from preschool through high school. Pro- grams run throughout the year, after school and on Saturdays. In the sum- mer, exciting half-day Learning Camps bridge the long summer break to help kids sharpen their learning skills and get ready for a great start to the next school year. We Bring All the Pieces Together. Success begins with a Diagnostic As- sessment that identifies how each child learns, followed by an individ- ual program to build his or her learn- ing and academic skill, confidence and self esteem. We know that there is always a rea- son when a child fails to achieve his/her potential, even though that rea- son is not always obvious. So, we de- veloped the most advanced dynamic assessment tools in the field. Through this assess- ment we determine how each student learns and then we create an individual learning program that taps into the child’s hidden success poten- tial. This customized ap- proach helps students devel- op more effective ways of learning. At Oxford, we teach our students to think and dis- cover for themselves, and to be more organized, motivated and independent learners. Before long, our students begin to transfer these new skills to their school work and home work. The results are higher grades, improved confidence and greater self esteem! There’s a warm bath, two-to-three hours of blow-drying hair, an hour of brushing followed by hairspray to keep every- thing in place, nails to clip and some shaving. And that doesn’t even account for the things she has to do for herself. The thorough routine is all done for a dog, mind you there’s more at stake than just a leisurely walk through the neighbour- hood. Since the early 1970s, the Bowmanville resident, who owns And Puppy Dog Tails, has been showing dogs at competitions throughout Ontario, Que- bec and the northern Unit- ed States. The regular maintenance program on her most recent show- piece, Poet, a cream stan- dard poodle, is all part of the process she has to go through to impress the judges. “It depends on the dog, but most really like it,” she says of the primping and attention that goes along with entering a show. “People see us doing all the preparation and think there is no way they could do that for their dogs, but they have to keep in mind above all else, they are still our pets.” While Ms. Miller spends her time showing dogs to evaluate breeding stock through appearance and structure, Sharon Dunsmore is at the other spectrum of dog shows. Agility training offers more of a high-energy en- tertainment show as dogs negotiate their way over jumps and through barrels in a timed race to the finish line. “I wanted a specific puppy from a litter and the only way the breeder would sell it to me was if I agreed to show it,” recalls Ms. Dunsmore of her foray into the world of dog shows 15 years ago. “I showed the dog and got hooked.” Branching out since that time to operate a K-9 Klubhouse Training Cen- tre in Pickering, she enters her bearded collies in agility, obedience and con- firmation shows through- out North America. Cur- rently, she is overseeing the agility challenge show at the Royal Winter Fair on behalf of the Canadian Kennel Club. Va rious types of shows and trials are held virtually every weekend, says Ms. Dunsmore, including agility, obedience, confir- mation, field and herding to name just a few. Some include all-breed shows that can attract more than 150 different kinds of dogs, while others are re- stricted to a specific breed. Most have a common link in that they test the in- stincts and trainability of a dog. While agility shows have a clear-cut winner based on time, a confirma- tion show leaves more to the interpretation of the judges, who draw a mental picture of the perfect dog, and base an opinion on how close the dog con- forms to the image. Structure, tempera- ment, teeth, muscles, coat texture and balance are just some of the criteria judges use. The dogs gain points for winning a show, which helps breeders sell litters of pups if they have a champion in their stable. It can also detract from the nature of the show as owners become obsessed with winning. “Certain types of shows can get cut-throat,” says Ms. Dunsmore. “It depends on what level you are competing at and why you are there,” concurs Ms. Miller. That’s one of the rea- sons Ms. Dunsmore prefers the agility shows, where the fun nature of the event is more prevalent. “Everybody wants to win because it’s you and your dog as a team per- forming. If I win, I win. If I don’t I go home with my dog, so lucky me.” Dog-gone with the show Fi ve-year-old bearded collie Champion Kincurran Riverdance Gonewest, otherwise known as Shae- Lynn, jumps over a bar during agility training at K-9 Klubhouse Training Centre, owned and operated by her owner Sharon Dunsmore. Tips for exhibitors So you think you have a champi- on that you would like to enter in a dog show.Take these tips into consid- eration for your first show. • Make sure your dog is regis- tered; • Be sure your dog is current on all innoculations; • Learn the proper techniques for grooming and presenting your dog in the ring; • Become familiar with the rules and regulations of shows; • Attend some shows in advance to observe your breed being judged and how others present your breed; • Use the knowledge of your breeder; • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Tips for spectators • If the grooming area is open, visit and talk with professional groomers to get tips on keeping your dog looking his/her best. • However tempting, do not pet a dog without asking for permission first. The dog may have just been groomed in preparation for being judged. • If you are considering getting a purebred dog, talk to the breeders and exhibitors. • If you bring a baby stroller, be careful you do not run over any dog’s tail, and that your child does not grab or poke the dogs it can reach. Of course many people are preferring to renovate then moving because they love the neighbourhood they’re living in.” It’s this ability to satisfy their customers most exotic needs that has made Plumbing Mart leaders when it comes to bathroom renovations. Nov. 17, 6:35pm vs SudburySports&LEISURE NEWS ADVERTISER NOVEMBER 17, 2002 It’s over for St. Mary Monarchs BY AL RIVETT Sports Editor DURHAM —The football sea- son for the St. Mary Catholic Sec- ondary School Monarchs came to a grinding halt against the Lakeshore Catholic High School Gators Friday afternoon. Grinding was the operative word in the Golden Horseshoe Bowl semifinal contest at the Oshawa Civic Stadium. The Gators not only ground down the high-flying Mon- archs’ offence, but their own run- first-and-always offensive attack eventually wore down the St. Mary defence in a 27-14 victory for the Port Colborne squad. In the end, the Gators’ ability to run the ball as well as control the clock was pivotal in the upset victo- ry over the Monarchs, who entered the game as the number-one seed in the Golden Horseshoe Bowl’s East Division semifinal. “A n ytime you can play football like that you’re going to win a foot- ball game,” noted Monarchs’ head coach Gordon Judges, tipping his hat to the Gators. “I heard they were great and they are. “The whole thing was their run- ning attack that grinds down the clock. When you’re playing 12- minute quarters, that becomes really important. Lakeshore Catholic came out and controlled the clock.” Judges also noted a slick and muddy field took its toll on his team, but was unwilling to use that as an excuse for the loss. “The (muddy) field conditions took our game plan away from us, but that’s neither here nor there. We had to get the job done.” He noted a combination of big plays going the Gators’way, and the Monarchs’ inability to make some key stops on fourth-down plays on defence, was the difference in the ball game. “If only we could have stopped them on fourth down,” he said. “They also had a big play get them a touchdown. When those things happen, the result is them winning.” The Gators’ ball control — and clock control — put the Monarchs firmly on their heels in the third quarter, when the Gators used up 10 minutes of the stanza. The back- breaker, though, came after a series of running plays was capped by a 15-yard touchdown sprint by run- ning back Ryan Samms against the dog-tired Monarchs’ defence. That play put the Gators firmly in front 21-7 with a mere 1:02 remaining in the quarter. To their credit, the gritty Mon- archs got a touchdown back with 1:25 to go in the game. Moments after turning over the ball on an in- terception, the Monarchs got the ball back after defensive lineman Alx Ferriera jumped on a fumble at the St. Mary 35-yard line. Two com- pletions to wide receiver Ben Voss put the ball at the Gators’ 35-yard line. On the next play, quarterback Erik Glavic fired a strike to Joe Dublin for the touchdown. Voss’s convert was good to cut the deficit to 21-14. However, the Gators put the game out of reach with a 56-yard touchdown run by Gators’ running back Ryan Pull. The touchdown came on the first play from scrim- mage after the Gators batted an on- side kickoff attempt by the Mon- archs out of bounds. Lakeshore Catholic struck for the first touchdown of the game late in the first quarter. With the Gators’ third-and-15 on the Monarchs’ 20- yard line, quarterback Adam Sneek dumped a pass to Pull, who bulled his way down to the five-yard line. On the next play, Pull got the call again and barged into the end zone for the major. Early in the second quarter, St. Mary tied the contest at 7-7 after a long series of running plays featur- ing running back Joe Dublin was capped with a two-yard plunge by quarterback Glavic. Voss kicked the convert. The Gators took the lead for good on a rare passing play that went for a touchdown late in the second quarter. With 1:10 to play in the first half, Sneek hit Samms with a pass up the middle that covered 55 yards for the major. Derek Schi- avone’s convert put the Gators up 14-7 at half time. Judges was philosophical fol- lowing the devastating loss, noting the Monarchs had come farther than he thought possible at the start of the season. “To be honest with you, after losing 20 guys off the team from last year, I didn’t think our team would be this good. It’s a cred- it to our players who put it all to- gether to win a fourth LOSSA championship.” Dublin was named the offensive player of the game for the Mon- archs. Yannick Carter got the nod on defence. The Lakeshore Catholic Gators now play third-seeded De La Salle from Toronto in the Golden Horse- shoe Bowl semifinals at York Uni- versity on Sunday. Intermediate girls spike Durham championship BY AL RIVETT Sports Editor PICKERING —Gandy was certainly dandy on the volleyball court. The Gandatsetiagon Public School Gators intermediate (Grade 7 and 8) girls’ volleyball team swept to victory at the Durham El- ementary Athletic Association (DEAA) Final Four Tournament at Village Union Public School in Oshawa Wednesday evening. Gandy defeated Dr. R. Thorn- ton Public School of Whitby in the final, 25-23, 25-23. The Gators dispatched Apple- croft Public School from Ajax in two straight games in the semifi- nal. Co-coach Larry Aiken noted he was proud of his charges who played solid, all-round games at the tournament. “Primarily, the girls are a char- acter team. They pulled together with tremendous team spirit. They trust each other on the floor, and they play their positions well. I’m very proud of them,” said Aiken, who coaches with Doug Holdsworth. Aiken said the players contin- ued to improve through the course of the season, winning five of six matches at the sweet 16 tourna- ment, as well as winning two straight games against C.E. Broughton at the area crossover tourney to arrive at the final four event. Competing in the 66-kilogram class of the national ranking tour- nament in Hamilton, Brown won four straight matches and was also named the meet’s most outstanding wrestler. Brown won by identical 10-0 counts in his first two bouts, over Ryan Weicker of Brock University and Fred Harrison of the Universi- ty of New Brunswick, edged Rob Lang of the Cattown club 4-2 in overtime and beat Evan MacDon- ald of Brock 5-0 in the final. Teammates Mike Francis and Ainsley Robinson competed in the same division and met up in the bronze medal match, with Francis prevailing 3-0 in overtime. Francis also pinned Jon Gill- man of Western, lost 6-5 to Mac- Donald and won by scores of 11-1 over McMaster’s Dave Rennals, 10-0 over Weicker and 5-0 over Lang. Robinson won 4-2 over Tim Wodsworth, lost 5-2 to MacDonald and beat UNB’s Fred Harrison 3-0. Paul Harrison and Dante Berlingeri both took silver for Team Impact, Harrison in the 74kg class and Berlingeri in the 84kg group. Harrison won 12-1 over Magal Martin of Queen’s and 6-1 over Guelph’s Josh Powell before falling 7-1 to Guelph’s Zoltan Hunyady. Berlingeri beat Brock’s Adam Fera 5-1 and Guelph’s Jeremy Cruise 3-1 in overtime, but lost 6-1 to Carl Rainville in the final. At the Toronto Open, hosted by Team Impact and held at Ajax High School last weekend, Fran- cis, Brown, Harrison and Berlin- geri each won divisional titles to lead the team to first place overall. Francis won four matches to claim the 68kg division title, while Brown, moving up to the 72kg class, Harrison, in the 76kg divi- sion, and Berlingeri, in the 90kg category, each won three straight bouts, all decisively. Robinson finished third and Dene Ringette fifth in the 82kg di- vision while Logan Hewkin, Bran- don McKinnon and David Kraw- czyk failed to place in their divi- sions. Overall, Team Impact amassed 45 points, eight more than runner- up McMaster. Optimists invite kids to ski PICKERING —Tear up the hills this winter with help from the Optimist Club of Pickering. A night after being ham- mered 8-4 on the road by the Collingwood Blues, the Pan- thers returned to the Picker- ing Recreation Complex Wednesday where they lam- basted the lowly Huntsville Wildcats 9-4. The Panthers (5-17-3-0 for 13 points and seventh place in South Conference standings) played at home Friday night against the first- place Wexford Raiders. Craig John- ston, Peter Franchin, Bryan Hampton, Andrew Jackson, Brent Chandler, Patrick Miller and rookie defence- man Ryan Annesley, with his first goal at the junior ‘A’ level, added one apiece. Hampton added three as- sists. The defenceman has chalked up three goals and four assists in his last three games. At Collingwood, the Panthers were never in the game, surrendering four goals in the first period and three in the second as the Blues built up a 7-2 cush- ion after 40 minutes of play. AJAX LUBE, OIL AND FILTER $14.99 LUBE, OIL AND FILTER $14.99 Durham West girls’hockey team goes undefeated in winning Chatham title DURHAM —The Durham West Lightning atom ‘C’girls’hockey team won its first tournament of the season last weekend in Chatham. It was a riveting cham- pionship game Sunday against host team Chatham that propelled them to vic- tory. Goals from Ainsley Northam and Sally Hong gave them the 2-1 victory and the championship title. Megan Rourke and Alana Kelly earned assists. Earlier in the day, Durham West beat a strong Orangeville squad 1-0 in the semifinal on a goal from Julianne Lindeblom, assisted by Hong and cap- tain Katherine Sheppard. It took the girls three tough round robin matchups to make it to Sunday. Durham West opened the tournament with a 0-0 result against Orangeville. In what ended up being a championship preview, the Lightning played Chatham to a 1-1 tie in Game 2 on a goal from Sheppard. A nail-biter in Game 3 against Windsor kept fans on the edge of their seats until defenceman Victoria Formusa’s shot from the point put the Lightning up for good, 2-1. Hong scored the other goal two minutes into the match. Other team members are Sydney O’Neill, Meryl Christie, Haley Dingman, Alex Dingman, Catlyn D’- Souza, Heather Kelly, Katheryn Lessard, Marissa Maugeri and Tori McKen- zie. ‘C’ stands for champions SCOREBOARD AJAX BRIDGE CLUB Duplicate bridge results from Nov. 12/02.
