The Durham District School Board’s ninth ethnocultural equity student leadership camp took place Oct. 22 and 23 at St. Isaac Jogues Church Hall. Fifty-three Grade 6, 7 and 8 students from schools in Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa and Whitby attended SPIRIT (students preventing ignorance and racial in- tolerance together) camp, and re- turned to their schools as leaders to promote living in harmony and ways to combat intolerance,. “They’re into it,” said Robert Cutting, the board’s co-coordinator Students from around Durham Region came to Pickering this week to explore the issue of racism and to identify methods to combat intolerance. Making their point during an exercise are (from left) educational assistant Angela Colacicco, Tanille Jordan, Tony Reimer, Julie Ayyavoo and Ryan Cassidy. If enough parents support the idea, Altona Forest Public School would offer both regular and mod- ified school calendars, starting in the 2003/04 school year. The school community council hosted an information night Wednesday at the school where parents could learn more about the modified calendar and ask ques- tions. The next step is modified calendar registration day Nov. 9, between 9 a.m. and noon at the Woodsmere Crescent school. “I think that’s going to be an ex- citing day because that’s when people have to be brave and put their faith in the modified calen- dar,” said principal Trudy Deacon. She noted the registration would actually continue after Nov. 9 to accommodate everyone who wants an opportunity to signal his or her support for the program. Ms. Deacon said the school community has set a general target of between 160 and 175 students, in various grades, to start a modi- fied calendar. Best Ajax, Pickering businesses honoured Board of trade re cognizes local excellence BY LESLEY BOVIE Staff Writer DURHAM —From making chocolate in Grandma’s kitchen to the last moments of a dying cocker spaniel, the Ajax Pickering Board of Trade’s Business Excellence Aw ards took a personal tone Fri- day afternoon. One of this year’s six winners, Debbie Proctor called it a privilege to have been able to launch the Copper Kettle Chocolate Compa- ny in Pickering Village in 1995 with her mother, Ruth Reinhardt, from the kitchen she used to bake with her grandmother. “Many of you here are aware my mother passed away two months ago. She was extremely happy and proud to hear we had been nominated for two years in a row,” Ms. Proctor said. “She said, ‘We’ll win this year’ and mom was right as mothers often are,” she said. Dr. Richard Liddell, who picked up an award for the Ajax Animal Hospital, thanked his part- ner Dr. David Manuel, his health- care team and patients for their successful 30-year run. “The human-animal bond is one of the greatest gifts known to mankind,” he said, sharing a story about a 15-year-old cocker spaniel that died earlier that week. “I feel sorry for those who don’t experience that. They are experi- encing half of life.” Jennifer Shannon accepted an award for Shandex Sales Group, on behalf of her father, Greg, who had to have emergency surgery earlier this week. The private label goods manu- facturing company he created in Ajax has grown to produce such big names as President’s Choice, Equate and Life Brand. Pickering graphic designers Compu-Image took home an award for its growth and reputation in customer service since 1994. Konica Business Technologies Canada Ltd., was recognized for its international success and its commitment to being based in Pickering, where most of its em- ployees live and are educated. New Country FM KX96, an Ajax-based station serving Durham Region, rounded out the list of recipients. It took home an award for its growing number of listeners. Eighteen businesses were nom- inated for the eighth annual awards. Nominees were evaluated in such areas as outstanding cus- tomer service, entrepreneurship and innovation and community support. “You have to recognize your successes and as a community I don’t think we do enough of that,” said board of trade president Pat O’Brien. (at Finley) Suite 7, Ajax 905-686-7717 Diets Don’t Work For 15 years my immense weight caused me pain and suffering. I suffered both physically and mentally. I avoided going out for fear someone might look my way. I always thought people were snickering behind my back. I hated to shop so I wore the same old clothes until they were faded and worn. I hid myself away and never expressed my true personality. But that wasn’t the worst of it. Imagine what it was like to be 70 lbs. overweight and work as a desk clerk at a health club! I tried a multitude of diets, weight loss programs and gimmicks. I attended group meetings faithfully. I’d lose 5 to 10 pounds, get bored, stop going, and gain all my weight back. I didn’t like the way it was handled so I eventually dropped out. I’d dream about being slim, but had no idea how to get there. I’d tell myself that I could stay on a diet. Two days later I’d be back to my same old fat-lady routine. The Miracle One day I read about Positive Changes Hypnosis in the newspaper. It was a big feature story (probably much like the one you’re reading now). I cut it out and put it on the refrigerator. Later that day I discussed it with my husband and we agreed that I should give Positive Changes a call. It was the best decision of my life! My first step was to attend the Positive Changes’ free hypnotic screening. It was surprisingly fun and informative. For the first time, I felt that someone understood what I was going through. It gave me a little spark of hope. I kept waiting for the sales pitch, but it never happened. I was never pressured. Everything was explained in detail and the fee was surprisingly reasonable. I knew that I desperately needed help, and the Positive Changes philosophy made sense to me. I signed up. After my first hypnosis session, I had no doubt that I’d come to the right place... Instant Results I arrived home from my first session with a big smile on my face. My husband asked me, “What’s up with you?” “Oh nothing,” I said. “I’m just in a good mood,” and I went right on smiling. I lost 4 lbs. that first week. After that, my weight kept melting away. In one month I’d taken off 16 lbs. My total reduction was 72 lbs. and four dress sizes. To be honest, I don’t even remember losing my weight - it was that fast and easy. Hypnosis eliminated my cravings and poor eating habits. I’m free from the hassle of dieting forever! I don’t have to go to meetings, count calories, or weigh my food. I simply enjoy healthy, flavourful foods like fruits and vegetables, and drink lots of water. It’s been as if my mind is on autopilot. To be honest, I still don’t understand it. I just know that my weight melted away at an average of 3 pounds a week and I never felt deprived. Life Is Wonderful! When I look at old pictures, I can’t believe that was me. People tell me I look like I’ve had a facelift. My husband says I seem twenty years younger. I’m even saving money! My grocery bill has gone down because I no longer buy cookies, cake and ice cream. Now that I have lost my weight with hypnosis, I can’t even fathom ever gaining it back. “I hated to shop so I wore the same old clothes until they were faded and worn.” Janice Lerch Before Hypnosis “Now that I have lost my weight with hypnosis, I can’t even fathom ever gaining itback.”Janice Lerch, 72 Lbs. The author has failed to mention the farmland in question already has agricultur- al easements on it. It’s been agricultural since the first settlers came here. Almost three years ago, after a 28-year expropria- tion, it was sold back to the original owners with easements, at an average cost of $4,000 per acre. The land most certainly has appreciated in value from those prices, and will continue to at an agricultural rate. The Crombie Panel has recognized what exists in the Region and City’s official plans. There’s a bigger picture here that every- one has a vested interest in — basic needs. Every bit of land that isn’t covered with pavement helps filter toxins in the water. Every bit of land that isn’t covered with houses isn’t creating more air pollution. And farmland that is producing food pro- vides for the masses. The government is going to swap or sell all provincial land to developers east of Duffins Creek and west of Brock. This is a perfect opportunity to apply smart growth principles, and avoid being swallowed up by urban sprawl like other communities. Linking green space and farmland from Rouge Park to the agricul- tural preserve (west of Duffins Creek to the Yo rk-Durham Line), and existing urban to the new proposed urban with higher densi- ty, energy conservative, and transit-oriented development. Many urban planning documents, in- cluding The Neptis Foundation and Urban Futures Report, question the possible need to protect the best, rapidly disappearing, class 1, 2 and 3 farmland in southern On- tario and the Greater Toronto Area. But, is the temptation of selling to devel- opers at an approximate price of $100,000 an acre too great? Editorial &OPINIONS PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER OCTOBER 27, 2002 Ajax has joined the no-smoking bandwagon and rightly so. Although they tossed a bone to bar owners, councillors at least did what was prop- er and that was to back a bylaw pro- hibiting smoking in most public places. Smoking is a well-known health risk (to everyone except politicians who represent tobacco growers) and shouldn’t be tolerated at all. It’s a vile, smelly, stupid habit. And, it shouldn’t be permitted anywhere the public is, period. No excuses, no reasons, no anything. But, people smoke, so let’s deal with the reality of the situation. Peo- ple are going to light up of course, and then tell their children not to smoke because it’s bad. Durham Region council deals with the no-smoking bylaw Nov. 13 and I guess there’s irony in the 13th proba- bly being a bad luck day for puffers. Given the overwhelming adverse health effects of smoking, it makes one wonder why anyone would light up. Public attitudes about smoking have undergone a sea of change in a little more than a generation. When he started working, Walter Gretzky says his mother told him he should start smoking since he was a working man. Can you imagine a parent telling their child that these days? My parents smoked — in fact at one point, my father had stopped but my brothers and I bought him some cigars for Christmas one year and be- fore you know it he was back on to cigarettes. My dad smoked a pack-and-a-half a day until he quit cold turkey about 25 years ago. He hasn’t touched one since. Meanwhile, mom kept on puffing away until about four years ago, when, following surgery, she stopped. Back when I was a little whipper- snapper, no one ever mentioned sec- ond-hand smoke. For years, my broth- ers and I had to suck in all that sec- ond-hand smoke. My younger brother is the only one of us smoking and he doesn’t smoke inside the house. The argument about smoking being a money-maker for govern- ments doesn’t wash. More money is spent on health care for smoking-re- lated illnesses than is made from to- bacco taxes. So, if bar owners are arguing they’ll suffer by a ban on smoking, my reply is, tough. The survival of your business shouldn’t come at my expense, both to my health and my pocketbook, through taxes to pay for medical care. Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com No ifs, ands, or butts with smoking in public Durham councillors felt they just had to get away to a retreat in Gravenhurst earlier this month, in part so they could come up with a ‘vision’for the Region. That’s a fine notion if council can make good, along with the help of a consultant, in discovering exactly where it wants the Re- gion to go in the next few decades. There has been tremendous growth and change in Durham since the Region was created in 1974. Municipalities that were small towns then, especially Clarington,Ajax and Whitby are now booming centres that have different needs and requirements. A vi- sion might help to crystallize a future blueprint for the Region. Regional Chairman Roger Anderson feels the retreat was a positive move toward creating a made-in-Durham vision. “I think it shows the retreat was very successful and will give the Region a vision and direction. The public will be able to follow and mon- itor on a continuous basis and they’ll be able to be part of inform- ing the process. All these things show the Region is going in the right direction.” Here are a few notions Durham Region politicians should sub- scribe to for any future vision: • It must include some prospect for maintaining and improving our hospitals and health-care facilities. We will be in desperate shape as an overpopulated and underserviced area if we don’t find some way to either lobby senior governments or raise the money ourselves to vastly expand and build new hospitals over the next two decades. The Region must play some part in helping this hap- pen; • There must be a plan for a reasonable and fair police budget that fully takes into account the ability of Durham residents to shoulder tax hikes with the need to keep our streets safe. Com- promise on the part of our police services board, our police de- partment and all the other Region departments that are desperate for funds will be required; • It must come to terms with the need for an efficient, co-ordi- nated regional transit system. As we grow, we must take into ac- count the need to move people in a timely fashion around and through our region; and • Any future Durham vision, finally, surely has to involve bet- ter co-operation among our disparate municipalities, all of which have needs which often clash with each other, combined with a plan to lobby in synchronicity with our fellow Greater Toronto Area neighbours to get a better deal from the Province and the feds. A vision is a fine thing to have, but it only matters if it helps make Durham a better place to live. Actions will speak louder than any words. Vision fine if it comes to fruition As Region goes about setting its course, important issues have to be addressed Keith Gilligan Staff Writer kgilligan@durhamregion.com Survival of business shouldn’t come at other people’s expense www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, October 27, 2002 PAGE 7 A/P From left, Hayley Ouimet, Sarah Zwolinski, Brittany MacNeil rehearse moves. JASON LIEBREGTS/ News Advertiser photos Acting Up of the event, as he watched students in small discussion groups on the second day. “They’re thinking, they’re talking, they’re discussing, and that’s what we want them to do. We don’t want them to sit there and listen to their teachers.” Activities on the first day included role-playing a racial incident, with students asked how they would react in the situation. On the second day students learned about the cycle of prejudice, learning a stereotype is an opinion that can lead to prejudice, a belief, and the act of discriminating against someone. Students watched a short video, ‘A Class Divided,’shot in 1968 shortly after the as- sassination of Martin Luther King Jr. An Iowa teacher, to show students how discrimi- nation works, divided her class into blue- and brown- eyed students. On the first day of the experiment, she told the class blue-eyed stu- dents were better, and gave them certain privileges, like extra recess time. The follow- ing day, the roles were re- versed and brown-eyed stu- dents were identified as bet- ter. In the film, the group deemed less important had low self-esteem and were picked on by other students. “I watched what had been wonderful, thoughtful, co-op- erative children turn into nasty, vicious, discriminatory third-graders in the space of 15 minutes,” the teacher states. Discussing the film after- wards, Beth Daniel, a student at St. Hedwig Catholic School in Oshawa, noted the pupils singled out as stupid, who were forced to wear col- lars, “didn’t feel important anymore. “It’s almost like they were more stupid, just because they were wearing collars.” Students described a num- ber of situations where they had witnessed discrimina- tion, identifying divisions in their schools between ath- letes and non-athletes and ‘cool’ kids and other stu- dents. At the end of SPIRIT camp, students create action plans, strategies to highlight the issue of intolerance and help eliminate it in their school. “We’re going to try and bond some of the cool kids with some of the normal people, try to get them to- gether at recess, just doing stuff, trying to become friends,” said Sean Deshevy, an Ajax student. Mr. Cutting said in Janu- ary he will visit the seven schools represented at the camp and find out how the action plans are going A/P PAGE 8 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, October 27, 2002 www.durhamregion.com SUN SALE FOR 1 2 3 In person Over 100 locations nationwide By phone 1-866-FLY-SEARS 359-7327 Mon. - Fri. 8am to midnight (EST) Sat. & Sun. 9am to 9pm (EST) Online www.searstravel.ca 24 hours a day • 7 days a week! 3 ways to shop Earn Valuable Sears Club Points Sears Travel Service: Pickering Town Centre (905) 420-7600 Open Sundays & extended hours weekdays! This larger location is one that will allow the organiza- tion to accommodate additional services. The agency is now able to open the Rose of Durham Young Parents Resource Centre, coincid- ing with the move, thanks to fund- ing from various groups and orga- nizations. For more than 14 years, Rose of Durham has supported young peo- ple expecting a baby or who have a young child. Through a variety of programs and services such as counselling, prenatal classes, par- enting groups, special workshops and social activities, the agency supports young people who are ex- periencing an early pregnancy and need help. The Early Years Challenge Fund, the Region of Durham and FK Morrow Foundation all donat- ed to help fund the move and the opening for Rose of Durham. An Early Childhood Educator has been hired to design and run the Resource Centre which will be for the use of agency clients. Pro- grams will address early parenting skills and community resources. Do you need a lift or has Mother Nature not been as gener- ous to you as you would like her to be? Child bearing, weight loss or just plain didn't get any are all con- tributing factors to having smaller breasts. Sure, now a days there are Miracle bras, water bras and il- lusions (boobs in a box) and let us not forget the old standby's duct tape and Kleenex tissues. But what happens to our self-esteem and silhouette when all is removed? Back to undressing in the dark. Which can really affect our own well being. Breast augmen- tation is a personal choice for most women who have experienced any of the above. Some women experience having one breast larger than the other which is eas- ily remedied with implants. Im- plants will allow you to have more saline solution in- filtrated into the smaller breast, which will make the breasts more symmetrical. Other women have lost breast tissue and look very saggy. They be- lieve their only op- tion is to have a breast lift, which leaves large visible scars. An appro- priate size implant placed in the pock- et can give you an illusion of a lift with a small dis- creetly hidden in- cision. As your little ghosts and goblins bring home their Halloween treats and candies, here are a few tricks to help prevent any broken braces or poking wires. If it is “sticky”, “chewy”, “hard” or “crunchy”, it is a treat that anyone wearing braces should avoid. This includes foods such as caramel, gum, taffy, tortilla chips, and hard pretzels. If children wearing braces try to “sneak” foods such as those mentioned, this could harm their braces and may also lengthen their treatment time. For patients wearing remov- able retainers, remember to keep the retainer in it’s case when bob- bing for apples. Too many retainers are thrown away when wrapped in napkins. What to do if your child has a treat related emergency? Contact your orthodontist immediately. Most doctors have emergency numbers where they can be reached. Usually small problems can be solved over the phone. Lose braces or poking wires can be held in place with orthodontic wax until the patient can be seen by the doc- tor. As the much anticipated construction pro- ceeds at the site of Lakeridge Health Oshawa site, Dr. Dixon is busy behind the scenes building the new Cancer Centre from the inside out. He is guiding the devel- opment of cancer care programmes and starting the recruitment of the 200 oncolo- gists, radiation therapists, nurses, techni- cians, researchers, and other important sup- port staff who will be needed when the cen- tre is fully operational. “The number one priority for cancer patients in Durham is to improve access to and timeliness of care,” Dr. Dixon said of his mandate to see the Cancer Centre oper- ational by 2005. “It’s a tremendous project, and I feel privileged to be a part of it because the needs of cancer patients and their families are just so great in this Region.” Indeed, Dr. Dixon’s background gives him a unique perspective on all areas of cancer care that puts the patient at the forefront of all aspects of the Cancer Centre’s opera- tions. Prior to joining the Cancer Centre in Durham, he was Head of the Clinical Programme in Radiation Oncology at Kingston Regional Cancer Centre. There he was involved extensively in radiation research and his work helped to establish and build the Cancer Centre. Dr. Dixon is the Deputy Head of the Department of Oncology at Kingston General Hospital and Associate Professor with the Department of Oncology at Queen’s University. In fact, he continues to practice radiation oncology, staying close to patient care. Dr. Dixon is the Chair of the Examination Board in Radiation Oncology for RCPSC, as well as Chair of the Radiation Quality Assurance Committee. He has been pub- lished 23 times in various medical journals and has authored and co-authored 32 abstracts for scientific meetings for the NICIC. Dr. Dixon is a member of the Heroes of Hope Campaign Committee. He is enjoy- ing the opportunities fund raising provides to meet community leaders, families, busi- ness people and union leaders to help them to understand the new Cancer Centre, care and treatment, and the hope that new research and technology provides to save lives. Durham Regional Cancer Centre Comes Alive... “The very special needs and concerns of cancer patients have inspired all aspects of building the new Cancer Centre.” Dr. Peter Dixon, the new Head of the Cancer Centre is delighted with the architectural designs. “It is just as important that we care about our patients’ spiritual and emo- tional-psychological needs as it is their physical medical treatments because healing is a mind- body-spirit experience.” New health care centres across Canada are being designed to inspire and soothe, and to be sanctuaries and safe places. At the same time, to provide the most modern, effective treat- ments, equipment and technology, and research available. “It’s all a part of seeing our patients as whole people, not just their disease,” Dr. Dixon continued. Indeed, research is validating the strong and positive impact that simple, everyday things such as natural lightening, open spaces, plants and animals have on patients’during their heal- ing processes. That research has helped to ensure that the new Cancer Centre is truly a patient-centered place of healing, whatever a person’s condition or stage of illness. The Cancer Centre, which is now under con- struction at the Lakeridge Oshawa site, will be fully integrated with the Hospital so that patients have direct access to all of the services the Hospital offers, including emergency, sur- gery, cardiology, internal medicine, and much more. “The link means patients have the best possible access to any type of care or treatment they may need beyond cancer care,” Dr. Dixon explained. The design is inspired by the healing touch of nature. When you walk through the front doors you will enter a large, glass-walled rotunda that evokes an immediate feeling of warmth and welcome. Plants will fill the area. Comfortable seating will be placed throughout for comfort and privacy. Skylights will allow natural sun- light to stream into the front area and through- out the entire building, even to lower floors below ground where radiation treatments are to take place. Beautiful healing gardens will touch the lives of all visitors who wish to walk through them or simply sit and relax. Patients can actually gaze upon the tranquil gardens while receiving chemotherapy in private suites that overlook the gardens. The design is largely open concept. “Patients will not feel shut in or far away from people wherever they are, whether that is in a chemotherapy suite above the healing gardens and where there is enough space for family and friends to be there supporting them or in a radi- ation treatment area that has no door that can make a patient feel distanced from their thera- pist,” Dr. Dixon explained. Another highlight will be a special Patient Resource Centre which will provide much needed and wanted information. It will be eas- ily accessible to patients and families who are interested in learning more about cancer, its treatment and research. All in all, the new Cancer Centre will provide a peaceful environment for patients. At a time when they feel most vulnerable, they will have the comfort of caring professionals and a warm, friendly place in which to be treated. Patients and Families At the Heart of New Cancer Centre Design and Construction Durham Region Welcomes Dr. Peter Dixon, Head of the New Cancer Centre Cancer Centre Construction Milestones • Demolition and excavation work for the Cancer Centre and Central Utilities Plant began in August. Demolition of the “C Wing” (original building, eastern portion of the site) is now complete. • “B Wing” (south-eastern portion of the site) demolition will start in early November. • Once demolition of “B Wing” is com- plete, we will begin excavation work. This work is expected to last until March. Helping Our Friends During Cancer Centre Construction Thank you for your patience over the past few months as we carried out the demoli- tion, digging and preparation work for the new Durham Regional Cancer Centre and Central Utilities Plant. We appreciate your concerns about dust, vibration, traffic and noise. Lakeridge Health Oshawa wants to mini- mize any disruption to your daily life dur- ing construction and apologize for any inconvenience it may cause. As a result: • We continue to monitor dust levels and work hard to keep it to a minimum. • Truck traffic is being directed by a flag person to ensure minimal disruption to traf- fic. • We will also continue to keep you informed about construction progress and how it might affect you. Thank you for your patience and under- standing as we progress with the construc- tion of our new Regional Cancer Centre. Busy Summer Turns To Busy Fall/Winter At Lakeridge Health Oshawa www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, October 27, 2002 - PAGE 15 A/P The new Cancer Centre will be a 90,000 square foot health facility, making it one of the larger facilities in Canada. It will stand three floors high and be directly linked to Lakeridge Health Oshawa. Specialty medical services that will be physically connected include: Diagnostic Imaging, surgery, emer- gency, internal medicine, and paediatrics. The technology, expertise, and facility offered to patients will be second to none. Only patients eighteen years of age and older will be cared for at the Regional Cancer Centre. Children’s specialized treatment will continue to be directed to Toronto. The specialized cancer treatment areas will include: * six radiation suites * a special High Dose Radiation Unit * 32 chemotherapy stations * outpatient clinics * a 38-bed inpatient unit The plan is for the Cancer Centre to be oper- ational by the spring of 2005. In the first year, three radiation suites will open, then one new machine approximately each year to meet increasing demand for treatment. Inside ... The Entrance People will enter the Cancer Centre by a large, separate entrance off Parkwood Court. Patients and their drivers can drive right up to the front doors for comfort and convenience. The Main Lobby The main entrance will take you to the spa- cious open concept lobby. As the hub of the Cancer Centre, all specialized treatment areas branch off of it. The lobby will be a peaceful yet active centralized area where everything is easily within reach. There will be a welcoming reception area that leads people to Specialty Clinics, the Resource Centre, Pharmacy, Laboratories, and Volunteer Services. The Radiation Therapy Area Located just below the Main Lobby, patients will receive their radiation assessments and undergo treatment planning, and their treat- ments in the Radiation Therapy Area. Each radiation treatment suite has its own waiting room and each of these has a skylight to allow natural light to stream into the areas. The Chemotherapy Area Thirty-two private chemotherapy stations will make up the chemotherapy area. Stations are large enough for an accompany- ing family or friend to be with patients. Each station overlooks the healing gardens. In fact doors from the chemotherapy area open directly to the gardens so that patients may spend tranquil, restful moments there after their chemotherapy. An Inside Look At Our New Cancer Centre Did You Know? 200 New Cancer Care Experts will be Hired at New Cancer Centre Many dedicated and com- passionate professionals take care of cancer patients. For example, oncologists (cancer care doctors), radiation ther- apists, physicists, nurses, researchers, and many more support staff. Ultimately, the new Cancer Centre will hire approximately 200 people, making it a new local centre of excellence and expertise that helps to build the Region’s economy and offers excellent employment and educational possibilities. “This is the most important charitable undertaking for healthcare in our Region today,” says Don Blight, Chair of the Heroes of Hope Campaign. “It’s certainly the largest with a goal of $30 million.” Indeed, people in this extended community have been looking forward to building their own Cancer Centre for almost 20 years and our Campaign leadership is making it hap- pen now. “Most of us are involved because in some way or other, every single person in this community is affected by cancer,” com- mented Chuck Powers, Chair of the Oshawa General Hospital Foundation and a long time advo- cate for the Cancer Centre. With one in three people developing the disease at some time in their life, all of us know someone who has suffered whether it is a family member, friend or colleague at work, it can be and is a trying time for everyone. Quietly behind the scenes, the Campaign Committee has already raised over $24 million of their $30 million target. “People understand the need immediately. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience to be able to share this Campaign with busi- ness people, community leaders, and others because they’re truly excited about our new Cancer Centre,” said Paul Mackie, Vice Chair of the Campaign. The Campaign is led by a strong executive team of 12 volunteers each of whom is responsible for fund raising among a seg- ment of the community. In all, more than 70 people are involved in direct fund raising. Some of the Region’s top business leaders have taken up the torch to make this Campaign such an early success. “When we come knocking, it’s pretty darn difficult to say no!” commented Glenn Willson, Chair of the Major Gifts Committee. The Heroes of Hope Campaign stretches across the entire region of Durham and beyond. It includes the eastern part of Scarborough through Peterborough and Hastings, all the way North to Haliburton. About the Importance of Radiation After surgery, the number one treatment that cancer patients in Durham and beyond need is radiation. It is an absolutely critical and often times life-saving part of many cancer treatment programmes. Ontario has 11 Cancer Centres, all of which provide radiation treatment. More, just like ours in Durham, are opening up across Canada to treat the growing number of people who are developing cancer due to the aging of the population and the growth in the size of communities. There are six fundamental factors that, when offered to cancer patients, dramatically enhance their ability to overcome the disease: (1) the three primary cancer treatments: radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery (2) rapid access to care close to home (3) HOPE (4) support (5) screening (6) prevention For the first time, Durham will have all factors in its own backyard. That Our Patients ... ... Will come from all over the Durham Region and beyond. That’s an area bounded by Peterborough in the east to Scarborough in the west and from Oshawa in the south to Haliburton in the north. Your new Cancer Centre will fill in the enormous gap in cancer care between the Toronto and Kingston Cancer Centres. Did You Know? About the Extent of Our Treatment More than 2,000 people were diagnosed with cancer in our community in 1998 alone. By 2005, that number will reach 4,677. In the first year alone at the new Cancer Centre: * We will care for 400 patients a day. * We will care for more than 4,200 patients in total. * We will provide 23,500 radiation treatments. * We will provide 21,000 chemotherapy treatments. * We will provide 900 cancer assessments, operations, and follow ups. Heartfelt Community Support for the Heroes of Hope Campaign The Real Heroes of Hope The inspiration for the Heroes of Hope Campaign is cancer patients. “They are the real heroes of this ini- tiative and the reason why we’re all here,” said Earl Dusek, Heroes of Hope Campaign Communications Chair. “To those who have faced or are facing this terrifying disease at the most vulnerable time in their life, we are honoured to share this story of hope, compassion, courage, and unity with the community.” Don Blight commented. “Cancer patients are living longer; therefore, over the course of their lives they often need surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. It is important for patients to have the availability of all modalities of treat- ment in one location.” Carole Keys, Past Chair and Board Member, Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre Cancer Survivor - Region Gives Precedent Setting Gift of $7.5 Million “There is this incredible desire to be a part of the Heroes of Hope Campaign,” Don Blight, Campaign Chair, remarked enthusiastically. “It’s like that saying when a need is recog- nized, the heart moves the hand.” And so it is that families, local businesses, community groups, Lakeridge Health employees and physicians, Auxiliaries/Volunteers & Associations, unions and corporations are all stepping forward to realize the dream of building their own Cancer Centre for Durham and beyond. The biggest news came recently when the Region committed $7.5 million to the Cancer Centre, a clear illustration of just how important cancer care is to everyone in the Region. The investment comes from the Region’s Rate Stabilization Fund and not from increased taxes. “Our goal is to raise at least $30 million,” said Paul Mackie, Campaign Vice Chair. “We’re well on target because some incredibly generous people have set amazing precedents in giving. It’s sending a ripple effect into the rest of the commu- nity to give to the best of your ability, and people are really doing it!” “The whole thing began with what could be considered the greatest gift of sentimental benevolence this community has seen in recent years,” commented Chuck Powers, Chair of the Board of the Oshawa General Hospital Foundation. The R.Samuel McLaughlin Foundation donated $5 million as a celebration of the fact that Mrs. McLaughlin actually helped found the Auxiliary at Lakeridge Health Oshawa and helped raise the money to build the first Hospital in 1910. As well, R. Samuel McLaughlin held a life long interest in every aspect of the Hospital’s development from 1910 through to 1972. “Things have a way of going full circle in this community!” Powers stated. We also want to thank the many other local philanthropists and groups whose gifts of $100,000 or more are spearheading this successful Campaign: * The Cash for Cancer Lottery * The Auxiliary of Lakeridge Health Oshawa * Community Memorial Hospital, Port Perry * Lakeridge Health Whitby Foundation * Memorial Hospital Foundation, Bowmanville * The Oshawa General Hospital Foundation * Uxbridge Cottage Hospital Foundation * Glenn and Lorrie Willson & Family * The Mackie Family * The Perry Family * The Gay Family While positioned well for success, the Heroes of Hope Campaign still has a long way to go to reach the $30 million mark. “We can’t rest on our laurels just yet,” said Don Blight. “The toughest part of fund raising is raising the last half of the funds. With the community’s help, though, we’ll reach that milestone.” Please join us to build the Region’s Cancer Centre. Your gift will make a community dream come true for generations to come. Please call 905-721-4888 to make your gift today! www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, October 27, 2002 - PAGE 17 A/P 200 96 671 467 2703 138 Region’s Teachers Lead the Charge Among Employee Groups to Fundraise for Cancer Centre It’s not only corporations that are donating to bring the new Cancer Centre to life. It’s their employee groups too. “We’ve all known a colleague who has developed cancer,” says Gary Down, who is lead- ing the Education Committee to fund raise among the Region’s 8500 teachers and educational sup- port staff in the Region. “It’s extremely important for our teachers to be involved. People look to them for so much more than the traditional class- room curriculum such as math, English and com- puter studies,” Down explained. “Kids experience cancer though family members. Now, teachers can be a source of information regarding our new Cancer Centre and the benefits it will bring the citizens of Durham and beyond”. Down’s Education Committee has been distribut- ing information to every school to try to reach every teacher and staff member. According to Down: “We’ve actually raised $70,000 so far. So now’s the time to take care of rust before it gets worse. Yo ur vehicle is your second biggest investment so it makes sense to have any rust taken care of now. If you wait until spring it will get worse and cost more to repair. Also icy roads can mean collisions so it’s good to know that there’s a place you can go if the unthinkable happens. Three Bears Autobody is just such a place. It’s has state-of-the-art equipment and the highly experienced staff who are trained to do all insurance repairs for all insurance companies. “We do everything with the customer in mind,” says Kevin of Three Bears. “We know how important their vehicle is and that they want it to look the way it did before the collision. Available year round and with conve- nient hours they do everything from minor dents to major repairs. At Three Bears they use only the best quality UV protected urethane in a two- stage painting system. They also use a downdraft spray paint bake oven so your car will look better than it did when it rolled off the assembly line. “We want to exceed the customer’s expectations and have them so satisfied with the job we’ve done they’ll tell their friends and family,” says Kevin. Right now Three Bears will pay up to $200 towards your insurance deductible on collision repairs. “This is a perfect opportunity to get your vehicle repaired ,” says Kevin. “Another reason not to delay is our 90 day, no-interest, no-payment plan OAC.” Kevin always wants to remind you that you should never be pressured by a tow truck driver or insurance company into taking it somewhere you don’t feel comfort- able with. "Insurance companies or tow truck dri- vers may suggest preferred shops giving the impression you have to take it there," says Kevin of Three Bears Autobody. "Well you don't. You can take it wherever you want and all you need to get is one estimate You need to know what your rights are.” Additional services provided include a free shuttle service as well as arranging a rental vehicle depending on your insurance coverage. There is also a five year warranty on the paint and a warranty on collision work for as long as you own the vehicle. For more information call (905) 619- 2327 or visit their shop at 282 Monarch Ave., Unit 20B in Ajax. Icy Weather is Coming and Three Bears Autobody Is Ready to Take Care of Your Collision and Rust Repairs DON’T PAY FOR 90 DAYS OAC Don’t despair. All you need is some rust repair. Maybe even some collision work. Whichever it is, your vehicle will look like new once it leaves Three Bears’ downdraft spray paint bake oven. WANTED! HOCKEY PLAYERS C OR D LEVEL TEAMS TORONTO HOCKEY LEAGUE ART THOMPSON ARENA CALL ROB: 416-261-8915 Sports &LEISURE NEWS ADVERTISER OCTOBER 27, 2002 Durham West peewees overcome early loss to earn tourney title DURHAM —The Durham West Lightning peewee tier II hockey team pulled off a major upset at the recent Willowdale Tournament. Facing a heavily-favoured Detroit Honeybaked squad in the championship game, the Light- ning — mostly 11- and 12-year- olds — entered the tournament to play up a level against higher competition and found them- selves facing off against a bigger and stronger Motor City team. Having lost earlier in the tournament to Honeybaked, the Lightning realized they could skate with their opponent and this proved to be the difference in the championship contest. Strong forechecking and rock- solid defence left the Detroit team with little room to move, while Lightning goaltender Kim Roche was stellar. The turning point came in the second period when a Honeybaked player was assessed a major penalty and, on the ensuing power play, the Lightning broke through for a goal by Stacey Damiani, assisted by Darija Davidson. The Light- ning continued their relentless play through the remainder of the game and had to kill a late third-period penalty before emerging with a 1-0 win. The peewees started the tour- nament against Honeybaked, losing 3-1. After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, the Light- ning forced the play in the mid- dle frame and finally tied the game with just over a minute left in the period on a goal by Trisha Egberts, assisted by Davidson. With under a minute to go in the game, Durham West was called for a penalty and the Detroit power play produced the win- ning goal. An empty-net marker sealed the win. In Game 2, the Lightning met a fast-skating Markham-Stouf- fville Stars team. After falling behind, Durham West regrouped quickly to post a 3-1 win. The Stars scored midway through the second, but the Lightning quickly Lightning learn: the older they are, the harder they fall See LIGHTNING page 28 Career Training500 CLASS A, D, AND Z Endorse- ment training at Durham Col- lege Whitby. The Lightning took the lead for good in the third period with an unas- sisted marker by Cati Taylor and a late goal by Fraser, assisted by Davidson. In a must-win game against the Oakville Hornets in Game 3, the Lightning skated to a 2-1 victory to advance to the final. Durham West grabbed the early lead on a first-period goal by Fraser, assisted by MacDonald. Oakville knotted the score at 1-1 in the second, but later in the period MacDonald scored the winner. Layne Farrell and Fraser drew assists. Championship efforts came from remaining forwards Kathleen Cran- dles, Gillian Morgan, Lynsey Naka- mura and Kristen Orrett and solid de- fence from Lee-Ann Murphy, Gillian Clayton and Laura Waters. Grant Farrell coaches the team, as- sisted by Doug Morgan, Bruce Naka- mura and Mark Orrett. The trainers are Lori Taylor and Patsy Crandles, and the manager is Peter Murphy. Lightning edges Detroit squad for tournament win Durham Attack needs girls for new court season DURHAM —The Durham Attack Girls’ Volleyball Club invites girls to play in its 2003 winter house league program. That comment from a coach aptly de- scribed the senior football game be- tween the Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic Secondary School Chargers and the Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic Secondary School Saints at Oshawa Civic Stadium Thursday night. In the end, the Chargers stumbled into a last-second 21-20 victory over the Saints in the most inglorious way. With the clock ticking down, a James Leckey punt sailed into the Dwyer end zone. DO’C players immediately surrounded the punt returner and a one-point rouge was signalled, thus giving DO’C its slim margin of victory. The win guarantees the Chargers (5- 0) first place in the league’s East Divi- sion with one game to play. First place means DO’C meets the second-place team in the West Division in the semifi- nals (likely the Dunbarton Spartans or the Pine Ridge Pumas) next month. The second-place finisher in the East, likely the Uxbridge Tigers, face the unenviable task of playing the first-place West team, the undefeated and three-time defending champion St. Mary Monarchs. www.davidsonchrysler.com 2001 DODGE RAM 1500 ST 4X4 ........................Blue, long box, 4x4, 5 sp. 2001 CHRYSLER TJ SPORT $22,988..........................Blue, 5 sp., 2 tops 2001 DODGE RAM 1500 DIESEL ..................................Silver, diesel, 5 sp. 2000 CHRYSLER GRAND CHEROKEE LTD ....................Black, lease return 2000 DODGE DAKOTA SPORT ................................Green, auto, air 2000 CHRYSLER SAHARA........................................Green, 2 tops 2000 DODGE DAKOTA EXCAB 4X4 ..............Blue, auto, air, 4x4, ex. cab 2000 DODGE DAKOTA 4X4 EX CAB........................Red, auto, air, 4x4 2000 DODGE JEEP CHEROKEE SP ........................Red, auto, air, 4x4 2000 DODGE RAM 1500........................................White, auto, air 2000 JEEP CHEROKEE ............................................................ 1999 DODGE RAM 1500 4X4 REG BOX ......White, auto, air, reg cab 4x4 1999 DODGE DAKOTA ST 4X4 $18,988 ......Black, auto, air, 4x4 ex. cab 1999 DODGE DAKOTA 4X4......................................Black, auto, air 1994 JEEP CHEROKEE SPORT $7,995 as is ..............Black, auto, 4x4 2000 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN ................................Silver, auto, air, awd. 2000 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN ....................Silver, auto, air, power group 2000 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN $13,988 ......Teal, auto, air, power group 2000 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN ................................Green, auto, air, awd. 2000 DODGE CARAVAN ..........................................Auto, air, power group 1999 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN ..................Green, auto, air, power group 1999 PLYMOUTH VOYAGER ..............................................Purple, auto, air 1999 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN ........Light cyprus, auto, air, power group 1999 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN ............................................Teal, auto, air 1999 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN 15TH ....Platinum, auto, air, power group 1999 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN 15TH ....Platinum, auto, air, power group 1999 PLYMOUTH VOYAGER ....................Platinum, auto, air, power group 1999 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN ........Light Cyprus, auto, air, power group 1999 CHRYSLER VOYAGER EXPRESSO........White, auto, air, power group 1999 DODGE CARAVAN ............................Platinum, auto, air, power group 1998 DODGE VOYAGER ............................Garnett, auto, air, power group 1997 DODGE CARAVAN $9,999 ......................................White, auto, air, 1996 GMC SAFARI $7,995 ......................................Gold, auto, air, AS IS 2002 CHRYSLER SEBRING ......................Dark red, auto, air, power group 2002 CHRYSLER SEBRING FROM $16,998 ........................Silver, auto, air 2002 CHRYSLER SEBRING ..........................Onyx, auto, air, power group 2002 CHRYSLER SEBRING LX....Silver, auto, air, power group, CD remote 2002 CHRYSLER SEBRING LX....Silver, auto, air, power group, CD remote 2002 CHRYSLER SEBRING LX ......Red, auto, air, power group, CD remote 2002 CHRYSLER INTREPID ......................Almond, auto, air, power group 2002 CHRYSLER SEBRING LX......................Silver,, auto, air, power group 2002 CHRYSLER 300M $32,988 ........................................Green, loaded 2001 KIA RIO ................................................................................Black, air 2001 CHRYSLER INTREPID $15,988 ............Blue, auto, air, power group 2001 TOYOTA COROLLA $12,988 ......................................Red, auto, air 2000 CHRYSLER NEON ..........................................................Red, auto, air 2000 CHRYSLER INTREPID ........Silver, auto, air, bench seat, power group 1999 HYUNDAI ............................................................................Red, auto “MAGNUM MUSCLE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE” 345 HORSEPOWER, 5.7L, 370LBS OF TORQUE! 1999 CARAVAN CERTIFIED.
