Guilty plea in sex assaults Pickering neurologist faces sentencing next month BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer DURHAM ––A prominent Durham Region neurologist has pleaded guilty to sexual interfer- ence with a 13-year-old boy in a de- partment store washroom three years ago and sexually assaulting five patients in his Oshawa clinic. Under terms of a deal struck with the Crown, Dr. Douglas Fred- erick Waller, 61, of Pickering agreed to resign from the Ontario College of Physicians and Sur- geons, meaning he can no longer practice medicine. Dr. Waller, who has battled prostate cancer for the past year, pleaded guilty Friday to sexual in- terference and five counts of sexual assault. In a case that stunned Durham’s medical profession, the well-re- spected specialist was charged in July 1999 with engaging in sexual acts with a 13-year-old Whitby boy in the men’s washroom of The Bay, in Oshawa Centre. Prosecutor Dawne Way, reading from an agreed statement of facts, told court after the incident, Dr. Waller wrote his cellphone number on a piece of paper and gave it to the teen in the event “he wished fur- ther contact.” The boy reported the encounter to store personnel and subsequently Durham Regional Police, who ar- rested Dr. Waller several hours later. Investigation by police contin- DURHAM —Education Minister Elizabeth Witmer says Durham’s public school board will have to wait at least two months before it learns if it is en- titled to more special-education money. Three months ago, as it ap- proved its budget, the board sent four letters to the minister. One called for the board to receive the roughly $5 million in inten- sive support amount (ISA) — special education funds — the board said it is owed after min- istry auditors examined the board’s funding claims. In a letter of response, on the Durham District School Board’s Sept. 16 board meeting agenda, Ms. Witmer stated, “with respect to the ISA comprehensive re- view, the total potential impact of the review will not be known until Dec. 2002.” Special-ed funding news delayed until December Autoworkers to vote on tentative deal today Agreement with GM reached this week BY CHRISTY CHASE Staff Writer DURHAM ––Canadian Auto Workers Local 222 members will head to the Civic Auditorium Sun- day to vote on the tentative, three- year settlement negotiated with General Motors of Canada. Watching the vote closely, along with CAW national presi- dent Buzz Hargrove, will be Local 222 president Mike Shields, who headed up the CAW master bar- gaining committee. “The phone calls (from local members) are extremely support- ive,” Mr. Shields said. “The mem- bers seen pretty excited about it, especially when you can do it without a strike.” “It” is a proposed contract that calls for an eight per cent wage in- See WALLER page 2 See RATIFICATION page 4 ued and Dr. Waller was eventually charged with sexually assaulting 13 for- mer patients, who reported being groped and fondled during medical ap- pointments at his King Street East of- fice. Through his pleas, Dr. Waller admit- ted to sex assaults on five of the former patients. All the victims were men in their late teens or early 20s, one with cerebral palsy, court heard. The offences oc- curred during exams from 1987 to 1996. In detailing each assault, Ms. Way told court Dr. Waller had patients re- move their clothes before fondling their genitals in the examination room. “The (victims) did not consent to being touched in that manner and the touching was not part of a bona fide medical examination,” said Ms. Way. Court heard the victims were being treated for a variety of ailments includ- ing depression, anxiety attacks, seizures, headaches and epilepsy. Judge David Stone of Ontario Court of Justice will sentence Dr. Waller after hearing submissions Oct. 15. In ex- change for the guilty pleas, charges against Dr. Waller relating to eight pa- tients are expected to be withdrawn. Under terms of his bail, Dr. Waller had been permitted to continue practis- ing medicine at Lakeridge Health Os- hawa and other area hospitals, with re- strictions. However, he hadn’t practiced in the past year due to his health. Meanwhile, a hearing into profes- sional misconduct allegations against Dr. Waller is to be heard by the Col- lege’s Discipline Committee in 2003. The allegations include sexually abusing six patients and committing acts regarded as “disgraceful, dishon- ourable or unprofessional.” He is also accused of “incompetence in improper- ly prescribing, dispensing and/or selling drugs.” In 1975, the College’s Discipline Committee found Dr. Waller guilty of professional misconduct for engaging in “improper association with a patient.” He was suspended from practising for three months. Nurses meet MondayA whole new world for Durham nuclear plants, employees Ontario Power Generation updates community advisory group on security changes BY KEITH GILLIGAN Staff Writer PICKERING —A year after the terrorist attacks in the United States, security at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station remains high. “We’ve improved security without imposing on people,” said Pickering site vice-president Pat McNeil at a nuclear Community Advisory Com- mittee meeting Tuesday. “It’s really focused on people who have to go in and out of the plant.” Since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has forbid pub- lic tours, he noted. Also, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) signed an agreement with the Durham Regional Police last Decem- ber to have armed officers posted at the Pickering and Darlington nuclear stations. The CNSC order noted “no one is allowed in unless they have a back- ground check. “The CNSC doesn’t want anyone in unless it’s business related,” Mr. McNeil said. OPG’s John Froats noted there are about “5,000 inbound trips a day at Pickering and about 1,500 at Darling- ton.” A video on security measures for plant employees was also shown. Among the features now in place are monitors and X-ray machines that employees and their possessions must pass through before entering the plants. The video, shown to employees, noted, “We’re still looking for weapons and contraband. Now we have an enhanced method to detect them.” Monitoring and checking is done by machines similar to those at air- ports. Hand searches can also be done if security personnel feel it’s warranted. The new procedures “allow for the best security in the industry”, the video added. When the new procedures were in- troduced, there was about a 15- minute wait for 50 people during peak times. The wait is now about four min- utes for 10 to 15 people, Mr. Froats said. Criminal background checks cov- ering the past five years are also con- ducted, Mr. McNeil said. “They don’t tell us the nature of the offence. They just tell us you did- n’t pass,” he stated. RATIFICATION from page 1 Superintendent started career in Raglan 32 years ago DURHAM —Gail El- liott is calling it a career. At the Durham District School Board’s Sept. 16 meeting, it was announced the superintendent respon- sible for special education and Ajax schools would be retiring at the end of De- cember. Ms. Elliott has spent her whole, roughly 32-year ca- reer with the Durham board, beginning with a five-year stint as a teacher at the former Raglan Public School. “It’s the 85 factor and I’m tired,” she said of her reasons for retiring. Educators until the end of this year can retire with a full pension when their age and years of service equal 85. Asked of her plans, Ms. Elliott said she’s “just going to travel and spend time with my niece and my godchildren.” Local trustees paid trib- ute to Ms. Elliott’s dedica- tion. Ajax Wards 1 and 2 Trustee Marilyn Crawford thanked Ms. Elliott “for being a great leader and a great friend,” noting she had two rookie trustees to work with this term. Melinda Crawford, the Ajax Wards 3 and 4 repre- sentative, used the acronym ‘CARE’to describe Ms. El- liott. She was “compassion- ate, articulate, relaxed and you excel in everything you do,” she said. “You do care about edu- cation, the students that have been under your su- pervision, the administra- tors.” IT’S ALMOST TIME TO NO DUCTWORK? I am retired. I was overweight my entire life – nearly 70 years. When every diet failed me, I gave up. Then I discovered a surprising weight loss secret – that wasn’t a diet – and melted off 69 pounds of unsightly fat. My dress size plunged from a matronly 2X to a slender 14 in only nine months. My friends were stunned! If a 70–year-old retiree can do it, so can you! Here’s how... Dismal Days of Dieting I tried every weight loss trick I could find. I struggled through fad diets, national diet pro- grams, Dr. Atkins, and the grape- fruit diet. I once even tried a Martini & Whipped Cream Diet! It was ridiculous. I would either have no success or the weight would come right back on. Dieting was a con- stant battle. My weight was up and down like a yo-yo. I finally realized that, at my age, this was not smart! I was completely dis- couraged. My Day of Reckoning When I retired, I stopped fighting my weight and let the pounds mount up until I woke one morning to the horrifying realiza- tion that I was eating myself to death. My friend had sent me a photo from my daughter ’s wed- ding. I looked at the picture and shuddered. I was shocked to see how large I had become. Yet I simply could not face another day of weighing and counting every morsel I ate. That was the day I saw the Positive Changes Hypnosis advertisement in the morning paper. I clipped the phone number, but postponed calling. I repeated this absurd per- formance for two more ads. Finally, I told myself, ‘Do it, Carol, it’s your last chance.’ I don’t know what I was expecting from hypnotism. I con- fess that I was skeptical. Much to my surprise, the Positive Changes Center was professional and pleasant. The staff was happy and reassuring and my free screening was fascinating. My evaluator made me feel at ease right away. I even got a demonstration of an amazing light and sound machine that would help me achieve hyp- nosis. Everything was explained and I never felt pressured. What a positive experience! Even the fee was reasonable. I decided that I was worth it. 18 Pounds in Two Months! People are skeptical when they hear about hypno- sis. I was even a little afraid of it. I had an image of a stage show and people making fools of themselves. That is just not how hypnosis works at all. When I am hypnotized, I feel as if my body has gone to sleep, but my brain is focused on the positive suggestions I am hearing. It’s relaxing, enjoyable, and I always feel in control. Part of my problem was that I was on the see – food diet – I’d see food and I’d eat it! Suddenly I could walk past food and not even care. That was real progress for me. There was once a time when I’d continue to eat long after I was stuffed simply because of taste. Hypnosis ended all that. My crav- ings, binges and poor eating habits are a thing of the past. I haven’t overeaten since I started the pro- gram. I have learned to substitute the fattening chips and nuts with healthy choices, or I simply eat less of them. I cook healthier and it’s fun. I am drinking water and enjoying it. Friends ask me what I’m ‘allowed’on my diet. I say that it isn’t a ‘diet,’it’s a new way of eating. I can eat anything I want. It’s just that what I want has changed. That’s why I never feel deprived. The New Me! What a delight when my pant size is 6 inches smaller! I have even dug some cloth- ing out of my closet that had never fit me. What fun! I can’t wait to buy a whole new wardrobe. Do What I Did... Most slender people don’t realize how miserable being overweight can be. When I think of all those years when I hid within my loose clothes, could barely bend over and tie my shoes, and hid from mirrors that would reveal the truth. Best of all, I am confident that I will keep my weight off per- manently because hypnosis makes it so easy! That’s why I recom- mend Positive Changes Hypnosis to people all the time. So if your weight is causing you undue anguish, I can’t urge you enough to call Positive Changes Hypnosis. Schedule your free screening appointment. You will meet positive, caring people and they’ll bend over backwards to help you. They’ll explain hyp- nosis in detail and determine if it’s the right choice for you. If it isn’t, they’ll tell you so. Best of all, the screening is free of charge and I’ve never seen them pressure anyone. Positive Changes Hypnosis helped me shed 69 lbs. Ever since the train collided with the truck and killed the father and his little girl, all that has been talked about is cellphone use on the roads. It really hit home for me because I have a three-year-old son and I use my cellphone in the car. I strongly believe all the talk of the father being on his cellphone didn’t ad- dress the real concern in this accident. Although cellphone use is a distraction, having a child in the back is far more dis- tracting. The father passed the phone to his little girl, she talked to her mom, the father then reached back to get the phone and her mother heard him say “Oh no” and the phone went dead. I know many times during trips in the car with my son I turn around to pick some- thing up or pass him something. I have gone through stop signs, gone over the line on the road, and who knows what else. At any given moment a train could be sounding and the bars would be going down. You reach for whatever dropped and you look up when it is too late. I just do not be- lieve the father was chatting away on his phone when the accident occurred. I know from first-hand experience how children take away your attention. The emphasis needs to be taken off cellphone use and put toward drivers with children keeping their eyes on the road. Editorial &OPINIONS NEWS ADVERTISER SEPTEMBER 22, 2002 I don’t have kids, but if I did, I’d be tempted to pull them out of the public school system. This would be based solely on the antics of 11 pub- lic school board trustees. I’m fairly plugged in, if you will, to what’s going on. What about someone who isn’t? How would they take this menagerie? The behaviour of trustees reminds me of two kindergarten children fighting over a toy; bickering over peripheral, non- sensical issues rather than core mat- ters. Did one trustee send an e-mail to all her fellow trustees? Did they all receive it? Why e-mail when the phone would have done the job? Who should pay the legal bill? Aren’t they concerned with the edu- cation of children? It makes one think of the snide comment made about underachieving sports teams — one Cadillac for each trustee as opposed to 11 trustees and one Cadillac. A comment about having a facili- tator from the Ministry of Education come in to explain the job of a trustee seemed bang on — why was a facilitator needed when the trustees were about to enter their third year on the job? Surely they should know what the job entails by now. Aside from the students, parents and teachers, the ones I feel sorry for are the board administrators. These experienced, well-paid folks have to implement what these trustees want. The problem is nobody knows what they want, including themselves. I suppose it goes back to the old saying of ‘you get what you pay for.’ The Province cut trustee salaries to a maximum of $5,000 a year. Who wants the aggravation of being an elected official for five grand a year? Besides, given how the provincial government has taken over educa- tion, one must question why trustees are even needed. Scrap them and pass on the responsibility to MPPs. Other than cabinet ministers, most of them are under-worked at the best of times. Are other boards suffering from the energy-sapping silliness plagu- ing the Durham public board? In Toronto, trustees took a stand over its budget and wouldn’t budge. At least they made headlines over a real issue. The Province, upset at this re- volt, appointed a former city politi- cian to run the board. Given the high jinks exhibited by the Durham board, it almost makes one wish for a similar fate out here. Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com It seems you really do get what you pay for Maybe it’s time for the Province to appoint someone else to run the Durham school board It’s funny how labour negotiations work. Less than a month ago, a major league baseball strike seemed as certain as a Toronto Blue Jays losing season. But, lo and behold, a last- minute deal avoided a work stoppage. Here in Durham, some wrung their hands a week ago Friday when Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) president Buzz Hargrove called the first contract offer received from General Motors management, “the worst first offer we have received... back to 1979.” Was a strike imminent? Well, sometime between that, “this proposal, as I see it, it’s a strike proposal,” Friday position and strike deadline Tuesday, something radically changed. Of course, GM management came back with a radically different second offer, the sides bar- gained back and forth, and suddenly, workers had a solid, gen- erous proposal to vote on. In fact, the words on Friday of Richard James, public relations manager at GM, were far more prophetic than those of Mr. Hargrove: “There are still four days to go and the company is confident we can reach an agreement.” Today, GM workers fill the Oshawa Civic Auditorium to vote on the deal. Here are the terms they’ll consider: an eight- per cent wage increase over three years, a signing bonus of $1,000, an improved cost-of-living formula, improved and ex- panded health benefits, 28 more hours of paid time off, and three more holidays and improved income security and retire- ment benefits. GM has also committed to invest $800 million in new facilities and products in Oshawa and St. Catharines over the next few years. While it’s been a rocky year in general for the automotive industry in Canada, it’s been an excellent one for GM. Local 222 president Mike Shields, who headed up the CAW master bargaining committee, said his members seem “pretty excited” about the tentative deal. There’s much to be happy about. The deal offers decent ben- efits to go with a fair wage hike and also ensures GM is confi- dent about improving and expanding its Canadian operations, especially in Durham. What’s not to like? For management, there was nothing to gain from taking a hard line in negotiations. This has been a terrific year for GM Canada with awards coming in for product and plant excellence at the Oshawa complex, sales on a 10-per cent increase over 2001, a vibrant new president in Michael Grimaldi eager to bet- ter the company’s past performance, and the promise of better things to come. A positive contract vote today makes both sides big winners and ensures GM’s position as an industry leader for years to come. GM deal a winner for everyone Agreement without work stoppage ensures automaker’s position as industry leader Keith Gilligan Staff Writer kgilligan@durhamregion.com BY JACQUIE McINNES Staff Writer DURHAM ––As interna- tional delegates prepare to head home from Durham following another round of negotiations, politicians here are preparing to fly to France to further Cana- da’s bid for a $12-billion fusion research facility. Clarington Mayor John Mut- ton, Clarington chief adminis- trative officer Frank Wu, Durham Chairman Roger An- derson and a regional staff member will fly to Lyon, France the week of Oct. 12. Once there, they plan to sell the international community on Clarington as the ideal site for the ITER –– International Ther- monuclear Experimental Reac- tor –– fusion research and de- velopment project, which is ex- pected to create 69,000 person- years of employment. “The negotiations are at the critical stage,” said Mayor Mut- ton, noting Durham needs to be represented in France where a large, international fusion con- ference will be taking place. Japan, France and Spain have also submitted bids to host the facility and will have represen- tatives in attendance, he said. Over the past week and a half, Durham has played host to numerous scientists and gov- ernment officials from Japan, the European Union and the Russian Federation. The dele- gations were here for further negotiations and to examine the Clarington site. Site assess- ments at the other proposed lo- cations will continue over the next two months. “It will be an important op- portunity for our community leaders to meet the competition for hosting ITER and to speak with the world’s fusion ex- perts,” said Dr. Murray Stewart, president of Iter Canada. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, September 22, 2002 PAGE 7 A/P visit us online www.durhamc.on.ca/part-time Durham College Continuous Learning Upgrade to Personal Support Worker If you currently hold a Health Care Aide Certificate and would like to upgrade to a Personal Support Worker, Durham College has the course for you. COLLEGE North Pickering Land Exchange Review Panel Public Consultation As part of Ontario’s strategy to protect environmentally sensitive lands on the Oak Ridges Moraine, the province is exchanging lands it owns in North Pickering for privately owned lands on the Oak Ridges Moraine in Richmond Hill and Uxbridge. The government has appointed the North Pickering Land Exchange Review Panel to recommend a set of principles to guide the valuation, exchange and development of the North Pickering lands. The panel, chaired by David Crombie, includes representatives of ratepayer and environmental groups, and business and academic sectors. The panel has produced a draft set of principles. Before submitting them to the government, the panel wants to hear what you think. THE DRAFT PRINCIPLES To see the draft principles and the affected lands, you may visit the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing Web site at www.mah.gov.on.ca. Follow the Oak Ridges Moraine links to the North Pickering Land Exchange Review Panel. You may also call the ministry at 416-585-6366 to have the draft principles mailed or faxed to you. PUBLIC CONSULTATION The North Pickering Land Exchange Review Panel wants your advice on the draft principles. The panel will hold two workshops in Pickering – one on the afternoon of October 1, and one on the evening of October 2. These will be working sessions at which participants will discuss the draft principles in small groups, and provide their advice to the panel. If you wish to attend one of these sessions, please pre-register by calling 416-585-6366. You may also submit comments in writing through a form on the ministry Web site at www.mah.gov.on.ca, by e-mail to NPLERP@mah.gov.on.ca, or by mail to: North Pickering Land Exchange Review Panel, 3rd Floor, 777 Bay Street, Toronto, ON M5G 2E5. NOW OVER 200CENTRES ACROSSCANADA ANDTHE US (NC)—Health Canada’s removal of the heartburn drug, Prepulsid, has raised much concern across the country on the subject of drug interactions. While there are alternatives available with a low potential for drug interactions when it comes to heartburn and other gastrointesti- nal disorders, it is still important when deciding on medication to discuss your complete medical his- tory with your doctor. Drug interactions occur when you unwittingly combine medica- tions that interfere with each other. It can happen with a combination of prescription drugs, but also with herbal remedies, dietary supple- ments, or over-the-counter medica- tions. Health products often seem harmless, but in some circum- stances they may cause problems. Here’s what happens inside your body: Drug must be absorbed For a medication to work it must be absorbed into the body, get to the site where it works and then act at this site. Interactions can occur anywhere along this process. One drug may interfere with how another is absorbed or how quickly the other is removed from the body. In the case of Prepulsid for example, one of the serious drug interactions occurred when Prepulsid was combined with a simple antibiotic. The function of the antibiotic interfered with the function of the heartburn drug, and instead of Prepulsid being absorbed properly into the system, it built up to toxic levels causing serious com- plications, including irregular heartbeats and in some cases sud- den death. Enzymes may conflict Medical scientists have worked hard in recent years to explore, uncover, document, and chart the types of drug interactions one can expect if combining med- ications. The science however is not exact. This is due in part to a com- plex system of enzymes in the human body that are involved with the breakdown of certain drugs. Complex biology All living things contain a family of enzymes called Cytochrome P450 (CYP450). These enzymes are crucial to promoting specific chemical reactions, includ- ing effective metabolism in humans. There are more than 700 kinds of CYP450 enzymes however, and each one has its own gene car- rying instructions. Human beings, for example, have at least 50 different types of CYP450 enzymes and it is increas- ingly evident that scientists cannot reliably count on laboratory ani- mals to show how new drugs for humans will interact. This is because each species has an evolved collection of these enzymes, tailor-made for its own unique diet and environment. In a large number of experiments, mice and men have much in com- mon, but when it comes to CYP 450 enzymes, they don’t. What to do In due course, drug interac- tion information is documented and distributed to medical profes- sionals. If doctors are fully aware of your medical history, as well as your current intake of medication - including over-the- counter preparations, herbal and dietary sup- plements - then they have a better chance of advis- ing you safely and cor- rectly. If you detect a drug interaction from a pre- scribed medication, speak to your doctor immedi- ately. Don’t discontinue the prescription without consultation and advice. There are medications available that have a low potential for drug interac- tions, including one for heartburn, so be sure to ask your doctor about these. In today’s competitive educational environment there is an increased need for supplemental learning to help students reach their highest potential. The Learning Bound Inc. program provides a focused approach, giving students that competitive advantage. Our Philosophy We believe that students are capable of learning anything, provided that it is consis- tent with how they learn best. Students benefit most from a positive approach that is based on working with their natural gifts and dispositions Learning Bound Inc.. helps students use their “learning styles” as a doorway to reach academic goals. Improve self-confi- dence, and to discover their direction in life. Our personalized in-home tutoring programs have a strong foundation in read- ing, writing and math that are essential for success in school and beyond. Your Child’s Assessment The first step in preparing a personal- ized tutoring program is to understand your child’s learning needs. Through our assess- ment process we identify your child’s learn- ing style, strengths, and pin point gaps. Skill Gaps: These are missing skills from earlier learning style that best suits his or her educational needs. Our assessment uncov- ers your child’s learning preference. This allows us to ensure that your child’s pro- gram is delivered using an appropriate learning method. Now’s your chance to join puppet patrol BY MIKE RUTA Staff Writer DURHAM –– Durham’s public school board wants to create interim school commu- nity councils to decide on a dress code before a new school opens. If the interim council favoured a school uniform, and enough parents supported the move, the council (SCC) elected in September would have to live with the decision for two years. Durham District School Board chairman Elizabeth Roy acknowledged the revi- sion to the board’s dress code regulation was “driven by the J. Clarke (Richardson Colle- giate in Ajax) example.” She said principal Pam Christoff favoured a uniform for the new high school that opened earlier this month. So did the school’s parent ad hoc committee and parents in gen- eral. At one point, the J. Clarke Web site proclaimed uniforms were a go. There were just a few problems, among them: the regulation states 80 per cent of a school community council, in atten- dance at a meeting where dress code is discussed, must favour polling the school’s families on the issue of a uni- form or uniform dress — and J. Clarke didn’t have a school council. “They were an ambitious group that had high expecta- tions and they thought they were doing right,” said Tr ustee Roy. She noted the change is re- quired for new schools in gen- eral, including the new Whit- by high school approved last December. J. Clarke principal Pam Christoff in an interview said at a February parent informa- tion night, attended by over 1,000 parents, “an over- whelming majority of our parents” signalled their inter- est in a school uniform when she asked for a show of hands. Ms. Christoff added only a handful of people raised their hands in opposition. Parents of elementary feeder schools were also polled, and Ms. Christoff, in a July letter to parents, noted 91 per cent of parents favoured a student uniform. The letter also stated when a new school council is formed, though the existing parent ad hoc committee may be elected, the uniform issue is the first item on their agen- da. “If the will of the commu- nity is still there, we’ll pro- ceed,” said Ms. Christoff. Education director Grant Yeo told trustees Monday the education ministry has given the board permission to create a policy for interim SCCs. However, Whitby Trustee Doug Ross was concerned an interim SCC could decide the dress issue, and then the elect- ed SCC would have to live with the decision for two years before another vote could be held. “I would like to see as many as 75 per cent of eligible families have to vote,” he said. “I’m just concerned that 30 per cent of the people can make the decision for 100 per cent.” Some trustees expressed similar concerns. Ajax Wards 3 & 4 Trustee Melinda Crawford asked if a minimum amount of families should be required to approve the uniform in a vote where the SCC has not been elected. In an interview, Whitby schools superintendent Don McLean said even if an inter- im SCC favoured a uniform, the community would still have to be polled, since the rest of the board’s dress regu- lation would apply — namely eight of every 10 families at the school must also support it. “The real gatekeeper in this process is the family vote,” he said. Mr. McLean noted the board’s dress code regulation did not address new schools and that’s why the amend- ment is recommended. He said the interim coun- cils could also decide other matters, including the school colours and what extracurric- ular activities would be of- fered. Asked why it wouldn’t be easier to just wait until a school is open and has an elected SCC before deciding on a dress code, Trustee Roy replied, “for a new high school,I think they would like to open up with a uniform.” www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, September 22, 2002 PAGE 13 A/P Durham board moves on uniform consensus for new schools ...because education is important For further information on Community Newspapers in Education email us at newsroom@durhamregion.com This Week ● Canadian Statesman ● NEWS ADVERTISER ● Times-Journal BISHOY HOLDINGS INC.75 BAYLY ST. Youngsters invited to take babysitter’s courseWife killer jailed eight years Ajax man will also serve ‘life sentence’ of regret BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer DURHAM ––James Poland handed himself “a life sentence” of regret when he bludgeoned his wife to death with an axe in their garage on Perfitt Crescent. But a Superior Court judge Friday gave him an eight-year prison term for the killing. The stay-at-home father of three fatally struck his common law spouse Andrea Schneider, 38, in the head with the axe the morning of June 7, 2001. The attack occurred during a heat- ed argument in which she hit him with a hockey stick and revealed her affair with a wealthy New York busi- nessman. In June, a jury found Mr. Poland not guilty of second-degree murder but guilty of manslaughter, accepting the defence argument of “provoca- tion.” Mr. Poland, a former butcher, tes- tified he “snapped” after she dis- closed plans to leave him and their terminally ill daughter, who has Bat- tens Disease. After the killing, court heard Mr. Poland, 38, stuffed Mrs. Schneider’s body and the blood-soaked evidence in the trunk of their Oldsmobile, which he parked at the Durham Cen- tre shopping plaza on Hwy. 2. “The most important thing in the world to Mr. Poland was his family; his wife, his two sons and his daugh- ter,” said defence lawyer Lorne Sab- say. “Mr. Poland has destroyed every- thing that gave his life meaning and he will be paying for that for the rest of his life,” he said, adding that his client will suffer “a life sentence” of regret. The slaying shattered the worlds of three children and their grand- mother. In a victim impact statement, 12- year-old John-Michael Schneider Poland wrote: “Since June 7, 2001 when the police came and took my brother and myself away from my home it has become harder for me to trust. “When someone you love and trust takes away someone you love with all your heart and was your world and best friend, there becomes a lack of trust, faith and hope.” Renata Schneider-Sandford, now raising her grandsons, said her life has been turned upside down by the death of her only daughter. “As a mother who has yet to sleep through a full night without night- mares... I have not been able to cope with the loss of my daughter for I have been so busy taking care of her children,” she said in a victim state- ment. She also said she fears Mr. Poland. “I’ve seen his temper and it terri- fies me to my core being,” she wrote. After the killing, Mr. Poland took his sons to school, cleaned up the crime scene and later drove his daughter Stephanie to the hospital to be treated for seizures. He later enlisted a friend to dis- pose of Mrs. Schneider’s body and car, giving him $80 gas money. The friend called police. Mr. Justice Robert Scott described the coverup attempt as “haphazard.” Court heard Mr. Poland’s criminal record includes a conviction for as- saulting a girlfriend in 1992. “Every woman Mr. Poland has been in a long-term relationship with has either been assaulted or killed by him,” prosecutor Michael Hill said. Mr. Justice Scott considered Mr. Poland’s remorse in passing sen- tence. “I still love her very much and I love my children very much. I’m just really sorry my children have to go through this,” said Mr. Poland, sport- ing a broken right arm. “I’m very sorry. If I could take it back I would. I’ve destroyed my life... our two boys, I’ve destroyed their lives. They are without a moth- er.” He said his daughter Stephanie, who requires constant care in hospi- tal, must live without the comfort of her father, who was her primary care- giver. Judge Scott said Mr. Poland and Mrs. Schneider, an executive secre- tary at Royal Ontario Museum, were both loving and devoted parents under tremendous stress. “There’s no perfect family in this world. They all have troubles. The stress of having a child such as Stephanie has to affect the stability of any family,” he said, adding the pressures reached their vortex on June 7. The judge credited Mr. Poland with 30 months pretrial custody, leaving him with five-and-a-half years to serve. JAMES POLAND ‘I’ve destroyed my life ...our two boys, I’ve destroyed their lives. The National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) team enters its fourth season under a new head coach, with a revamped roster and a renewed commitment to moving up in the standings in ar- guably the finest elite women’s hockey league in the world. The Ajax-based club opens the 2002-03 season against the defending champion Beatrice Aeros at the Ajax Community Centre Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. The team was winless heading into its final pre-season game Saturday against the Thunder in Brampton. The result wasn’t available at the News Advertiser’s press deadline. The team welcomed Peter Perram to the bench earlier this year, taking over from former head coach Don Henwood, who’s now a scout with the club. The 41-year-old was head coach of the Swiss national women’s team based in Zurich before being let go two years ago. After returning to his native Edmonton, he took a year off coaching and subsequently moved to Toronto to a new job. In the past year, however, his desire to get back in the game was great. “Taking a year off coaching just about killed me. It was very hard and I’m very glad to be back. I’m very lucky and appreciative to have the opportunity that Telus gave me. It’s the best league in the world,” he said. Perram takes over the coaching reins of a team that has been competitive, but has not fulfilled its promise of moving up into the league’s stratosphere currently occupied by the perennial champion Aeros. He noted it should prove challenging to move the club in that direction. The Lightning “had the opportunity to be better in the past. One or two players could have made the difference. Teams like Brampton and the Beatrice Aeros and Calgary seem to be able to attract nation- al team players,”said Perram, adding the “minimum goal” this season is to make the playoffs. That said, however, Perram explained he’s not so interested in attracting national team-calibre players as he is creating a team atmosphere. “We’ve taken a different approach in that we want to create a team, not so much individuals, but a group of players who play with a strong concept and philosophy,” he said. “We’ve searched out play- ers who we think meet this description. There’s a lot of underground talent in Ontario and we’re very happy with the players we’ve got.” For the most part, the Lightning roster contains many new faces from a year ago. While he admitted he waived some veteran players during tryouts, oth- ers such as Natalie Babony, Andrea Babony and Elizabeth Chiasson — all solid contributors last sea- son — have moved on to university. The club, however, still has some veterans from last season, including Erin Rourke and Jessica Allen and goaltender Jenn Piitz. Perram said these veter- ans will be counted on for their leadership again this year. Perram’s excited with the new crop of rookies, pointing to first-year forward Jackie Jarrel, of Belleville, who has emerged as a consistent sniper in the pre-season, scoring in each of the Lightning’s three exhibition games. He also singled out for praise rookie goaltender Amanda Cronin, formerly of the University of Maine Black Bears, and for- ward Jamie Hill, who also played for the Black Bears, for their fine training camp and pre-season play. With the new NWHL regular season only days away, Perram is impatient to get the show on the road. “I can’t wait. I’m itching to go. The team is ready and the staff is ready,” he says. Will Lightning finally strike? Rams tough in football debut Henry Street wins, but Ajax High no pigskin pushovers BY AL RIVETT Sports Editor AJAX —There was no upset in the offing for the Ajax High School Rams senior football team, but it nonetheless served notice it won’t be first-year fodder for the rest of the league. Playing their first meaningful football game since the 1970s, it was almost like a victory for the up- start Rams who played with poise against the visiting Henry Street High School Hawks in the Lake On- tario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) opener for both teams here Friday afternoon. In the end, though, the league veteran Hawks won out over the surprising Ajax upstarts 16-6. The first-ever football game was turned into an event at the Ajax school, with a large number of the student body turning out for the contest, complete with half-time music over a PA system and a per- formance from the school’s cheer- leading squad. Although the solid effort of his charges didn’t equate to a win in their season home opener, Rams’ head coach Derek Rushton was pleased, but not surprised, with his team’s fine showing. “I think we played well. We came out and we competed. I think we gave them something they weren’t expecting,” says Rushton. “I think we were competitive and that was the goal.” Ajax High was buoyed by a strong backfield performance, espe- cially by running back Riccardo Biggs, who scored the first Rams’ touchdown in their new era of foot- ball. Biggs carried the ball 45 yards in the first quarter for the major score. Rushton was pleased with his team’s play at all facets of the game, especially the Rams’ defence that showed well, causing a couple of Hawks’turnovers in the contest. “Defensively, I thought we were very strong,” says Rushton. The first half was a close affair, with Henry Street leading 8-6 at half time. Henry Street quarterback David Munns scored on a five-yard keeper play in the first quarter. Henry Street opted for a two-point convert, with Munns completing a pass to Derek Pierson in the end zone. The back-breaking touchdown for the Rams occurred in the third quarter when Hawks’ James Chev- ers ran unfettered to the end zone on a first-down play that covered about 75 yards. Again, the Hawks went for the two-point convert, with Munns again hooking up with Pier- son. Henry Street had the best chance to put points on the board late in the final quarter, with a long offensive series putting them on the Ajax three-yard line. However, a fumble recovery by Ajax kept the Hawks from expanding their lead. Hawks’head coach Pat Pucknell was surprised with the performance of the Ajax High squad. “I was pleasantly surprised,” says Pucknell. “They gave up a good fight. They’re well organized and they have good size.” The Rams play at Pine Ridge against the Pumas in Pickering next Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. A.J. Under-sevens nip Strikers for Warriors’title AJAX —Hard work paid off for the Ajax United girls’ under-seven all-star soccer team in the form of the championship at the Ajax Warriors Adidas Girls Soccer Tournament recently. The Ajax United Soccer Club put together a team of promising, skilled players from the Ajax United House League just three weeks prior to the tourney. United met the Ajax War- riors Strikers in the final — a team that defeated United 1-0 in round-robin action. In a hard-fought final, United’s Shaniqua Meikle scored the lone goal for a 1- 0 victory. The Warriors pressed hard in the second half to net the equalizer, but goalkeepers Amanda Lunn and Julie Devost were equal to the challenge. Devost was named player of the game. In the semifinals against the Ajax Warriors Flames, Meikle and Brianne Wagar scored in the first half to put United on top 2-1. In the second half, Meikle added the insurance marker to make the final score 3-1. Meikle was chosen player of the game. The all-stars placed sec- ond in round-robin play. No scores were provided.
