PICKERING ––Jimmy Chapman puts a fresh spin on things at the Pickering Town Centre Thursday as part of its Countdown to Class school supplies drive for needy children. The drive, being run in conjunction with the Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge United Way, helps underprivileged children start the new school year with the ap- propriate tools. Drop-off boxes for donations are set up at the shopping centre. Durham stuck in traffic No money for region in $25-million funding announcement Pickering man robbed in home BY JACQUIE McINNES Staff Writer DURHAM ––Commuters here will have to keep plugging with existing transit systems a while longer after Durham was shut out of a $25-million funding an- nouncement, yesterday. While politicians here were disappointed to learn millions of dollars would go to neighbouring regions such as Toronto,York and even outside the GTA to Wa- terloo Region, the Province is saying the game isn’t over yet. “Durham’s proposal is still being reviewed,” said Scott Brownrigg, press secretary to Ajax-Whitby- Uxbridge MPP and Minister of Finance Janet Ecker. “There will be additional an- nouncements and I am as- suming MTO (Ministry of Transportation) and the Re- gion continue to work on the proposals. They’re still very much under consideration.” On Thursday, the Province announced $13.3 million for transit initiatives in Toronto, $5.3 million for Waterloo Re- gion, $6.6 million for York Region and $4.1 million for Hwy. 403 and 407 park and ride lots and other improve- ments to the highway corri- dors to support a bus rapid transit network (buses that drive in a dedicated lane alongside the highway). But despite applications for the funding, Durham received nothing, says Regional Chair- man Roger Anderson. “Once again the Province doesn’t realize the GTA goes east of Markham Road,” said Mr. Anderson. “My PICKERING ––A Pickering man was robbed of cash and struck with a baton after two youths broke into a residence. Durham Regional Police were called at 1:46 p.m. Thursday, after two youths, one armed with a rock, entered a Pinegrove Avenue resi- dence. They approached a 19-year- old man who was sitting on a couch in a room at the back of the home. They demanded cash and then one youth grabbed a collapsible baton in the room and hit the resi- dent in the upper body area, police said. The resident then grabbed some golf clubs to defend himself and the youths fled, police said. The resident had minor injuries. Police later arrested two teens in the area. Two 16-year-old Pickering youths faces several charges in re- lation to the incident. ROGER ANDERSON ‘This is looking at a pretty small picture.’ understanding of Smart Growth is it’s looking at the bigger picture. This is look- ing at a pretty small picture. Durham is the fastest or sec- ond-fastest growing region in Ontario.” The money was granted based on expressions of inter- est submitted in January under the Golden Horseshoe Transit Initiative Program (GTIP). Durham and its mu- nicipalities submitted a num- ber of proposals for transit projects including: funding for regional buses, road- widening and improvements, an acceleration of expansion of GO Transit rail lines to bring the train to Bow- manville and commuter lots in various locations. En- hancement of GO service to the northern municipalities was also requested as well as transit ‘priority initiatives,’ which would give multi-pas- senger vehicles priority over private vehicles and the cre- ation of a regional smart-card fare system. This round of funding was allocated based on six criteria set out during the request for expressions of interest, says Ryan Bailey, MTO spokesman. “It was based on competing business cases and what could give the best im- mediate result. These were the best short-term projects to get under way and they re- spond well to the Smart Growth recommenda- tions.” The On- tario central re- gional Smart Growth Panel re- leased 24 recom- mendations, Wednesday, aimed at reducing gridlock and smog in the gold- en horseshoe. Durham MPP John O’Toole says it probably isn’t any accident that two of the big winners in the fund- ing announcement were York and Waterloo regions, both areas that recently amalga- mated the transit systems of their local municipalities. “They have far more pro- gressive plans. The further along the integrated line you are the more favourably the application be evaluated.” Mr. O’Toole added he is following up with ministers to push Durham’s transit ini- tiatives. Chairman Anderson, who has endorsed a regional tran- sit system in the past agrees. “It’s issues like these that leave Durham behind some- times, unfortunately. I think if you ask the public if they want a transit system that goes across the Region they will say yes. “If you can do it with five transit systems or do it with one, great. The Province is looking for one inter-regional service.” Bob Goody, manager of the Oshawa Transit Commis- sion, says Durham can still have a seamless transit sys- tem for its residents under current operators but only with the Province’s help. “The big ones get all the money and the little ones are left out again.” Whitby also operates a system and Ajax and Picker- ing amalgamated their sys- tems earlier this year. As well, GO Transit provides east-west service across the region. The transit operators and the Region have been re- viewing ways to integrate the systems, said Mr. Goody. “It’s slightly different than in York. Our transit study will be recommending an alterna- tive that provides co-opera- tive, effective service be- tween local operators and GO.” Whitby Mayor Marcel Brunelle, Durham’s only member of the 19-person Smart Growth panel, said he was disappointed to learn there will be no money for Durham in this announce- ment. “A lot of the com- muters in that gridlock come from this region.” A/P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 18, 2002 Singer Sewing Machine Company ordered these machines in anticipation of LARGE SCHOOL SALES. The future of the Ontario Munici- pal Board, the new Municipal Act, there are a lot of con- cerns with that and about how we as municipalities are going to raise funds. We’re boxed in in so many ways and the Province needs to stop treating us like children,” he explained. “The AMO has a real opportunity to become a strong voice in provincial politics that it hasn’t exer- cised yet. As municipalities, we have a lot of common is- sues and concerns on political matters.” This year’s conference is Aug. 18 to 21 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. It features 19 sessions for municipal representatives to discuss and learn about time- ly issues, including electrici- ty, emergency services, hous- ing delivery, roads, infra- structure maintenance and planning, and building re- form. “They are valuable and in- formative, but we’ve got to get beyond just the training sessions and move towards developing political action strategies,” he said. “If we want a new deal for urban re- vitalization we have to have a common voice that’s uniform across the board.” Delegates at the confer- ence will also vote for a new AMO executive board and Durham Region Chairman Roger Anderson is vying for the post of president. “I’ll be supporting Roger,” said Coun. Holland. Ajax and Pickering seniors strut their stuff in Toronto this week Background lands Durham board official spot on review advisory committee BY MIKE RUTA Staff Writer DURHAM —Two familiar Durham names are among those who will advise Mordechai Rozan- ski in his review of the Province’s education funding formula. Faced with criticism that the funding formula is flawed and not meeting the needs of students, the Province in its May 9 speech from the throne stated the review is to be completed by Nov. 1. Dr. Rozans- ki, president of the University of Guelph, was chosen to lead the Ed- ucation Equality Task Force, as- sisted by an expert panel and a stakeholder advisory committee. Dr. Rozanski will submit a report to Education Minister Elizabeth Witmer with rec- ommendations intended to help the Province plan its 2003-04 school year edu- cation budget. David Visser, business superin- tendent at the Durham Catholic District School Board, is among the 31 advisory committee mem- bers. Mr. Visser brings the views of the Ontario Catholic School Business Offi- cials’ Association to the consulta- tion process. A task force press release states “the committee will express current perspectives in the education community, help the task force focus on the right ques- tions, provide advice on the struc- ture of its consultations and com- ment on submissions that are made.” Mr. Visser in an interview said the business association contacted him last month to ask if he would allow his name to be put forward as a nominee to be their represen- tative and he agreed. “I think that I understand very well education finance and the is- sues affecting education right now and would like to offer my effort and knowledge to see if we could make it better for our Catholic stu- dents, parents, staff and trustees,” he said. Mr. Visser said he doesn’t feel any pressure being a member of the task force, since he’s been in- volved in finance on the provincial scene for several years. He said Dr. Rozanski told com- mittee members they are welcome to attend the public consultations to take place next month across the province. “I will try to attend the ones that are in Toronto and will take it from there,” he said. Brian Lambie, the task force’s communications assistant, in a re- cent interview said the advisory committee met as a group for the first time last Thursday. He added the committee mem- bers “provided a lot of input” dur- ing the meeting on the structure of the public meetings. He said while “they still have to iron out a few details,” the meet- ings will be advertised and a re- lease will be issued “very shortly” stating how the public can partici- pate. Five “expert advisers” were also named to assist the task force, including Brian Cain, who for 11 years was the business superinten- dent at the Durham District School Board. Mr. Cain retired last year after a 32-year career in the educa- tion system. The task force announced pub- lic meetings will take place Sept. 9 and 10 in Ottawa, Sept. 12 in Thunder Bay, Sept. 18 to 20 in Toronto, Sept. 23 in North Bay, Sept. 25 and 26 in London, and Sept. 27 in Barrie. The release states the task force has so far received over 30 submis- sions, and Mr. Lambie noted 18 of them had been submitted via the task force’s Web site, www.ed- fundingreview.on.ca. In addition to the Web site, members of the public can send a written submission by Sept. 30 to: Education Equality Task Force, P.O. Box 22, 77 Wellesley St. W., Toronto, M7A 1N3. Amyotrophic lateral sclero- sis (ALS), the progressive and fatal neurodegenerative dis- ease that makes even the sim- plest movements impossible, will be under attack Saturday, Sept. 28 as residents from around Durham Region con- verge on Rotary Park in Ajax for the second annual five- kilometre ‘Walk to D’Feet ALS.’ The ALS Society of On- tario-Durham Region is orga- nizing the local version of the national event. Last year’s Durham walk raised $63,000. Walk teams of five or more people are needed to collect donations for local ALS pro- grams and services in advance of the wheelchair-accessible event. Along with families and friends, Durham businesses are encouraged to enter teams and match employees’ dona- tion totals. Corporate sponsorship op- portunities are available and prizes are on the line for the participants with the highest pledge totals. ALS can strike anyone at any time, regardless of age, sex or ethnic origin. Between 1,500 and 2,000 Canadians are currently living with ALS and 90 per cent of people with the disease die within five years of diagnosis. Registration on Sept. 28 is at 8:30 a.m. followed by the walk at 10 a.m. For more information, call Doreen Snowden at 905-728- 8822. P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 18, 2002 West Nile virus ‘hyperbole’ getting out of hand To the editor: Re: ‘Dead bird likely West Nile victim,’Aug. 7. The West Nile virus (WNV): an exotic name, sure to instil fear into all hearing the words. Unfortunately for those who profit from panic, reality doesn’t quite measure up. While it’s possible, you are very unlike- ly to be infected with this rare disease, or even know anyone who falls victim to it. You will, however, know many people who contract cancer and die from one of its vari- ations. (One of my friends from Port Perry died last week of lung cancer.) According to a recent daily newspaper article, 1,100 peo- ple will die in the GTA this year from smog- related diseases, such as cancer, emphysema and asthma. That is reality. What is the response of our govern- ments, both regional and provincial, to these different concerns? Invest millions of scarce taxpayer dollars, that could be constructive- ly used elsewhere, into further polluting the waterways with mosquito larvicide and the air with malathion, a suspected human car- cinogen and known immune system block- er. Particularly amazing is that normally sensible medical and municipal personnel have become caught up in the hyperbole about WNV. Hopefully, eventually cooler heads will prevail and this minor danger will be demoted to the level of importance it actually deserves. Editorial &OPINIONS PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER AUGUST 18, 2002 With approvals now in place for 66 townhouses on one side and 17 on the other, the south end of Liverpool Road seems poised to become a great place to live. Nautical village-style homes with views of Frenchman’s Bay just foot- steps from the docks and the water. Just a short stroll down the soon- to-be-built extra-wide sidewalks is the beautiful beach complete with boardwalk, Millennium Square and splash park. Several of the new homes will house shops, restaurants and cafes, bringing the area to life day and night. And, if all goes as planned, the boardwalk will be expanded and docks constructed for a new water taxi to take travellers across the bay. I can see myself sitting on a patio sipping a cold beverage, discussing how wonderful life is as I enjoy the warm breeze off the lake on a sum- mer day. It feels like a dream and just as I’m about to sign my life away on a $400,000 mortgage for my beautiful new home, someone steps on my foot as a crowd of people storm by, head- ed to the beach. Millions of public dollars have gone and will continue to go into re- vitalizing the east shore. The area is meant for public enjoyment and this is where the problem lies. At first a few people probably won’t bother Pickering’s newest resi- dents. I doubt those who move in will mind giving up their pristine neigh- bourhood for a few days so the Frenchman’s Bay Festival can go on one weekend every summer. They may not even mind when a few window shoppers are found browsing through the new shops or stargazing lovers are seen taking a late night stroll on the boardwalk. But, eventually they’re going to want their privacy. The festival brings 15,000 people down to the east shore over those three days. Sounds fine for a week- end, but rather frustrating if 15,000 people are trampling across your lawn every weekend for the entire summer. Things are going to come to a head down there. As more and more of the public discovers how great the area is and the City plans more festi- vals, residents are going to have trou- ble finding a place to park or even something as simple as some peace and quiet. You can bet they’ll start complain- ing and no doubt they’ll build fences, really high ones. It still sounds like a great place to live, but only if you like crowds. Pickering councillors who voted against the townhouse complex un- derstood this — it’s just too bad two Ontario Municipal Board members, who had probably never even heard of Pickering before, didn’t. Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Waterfront a great new home – if you love crowds Martin Derbyshire Staff Writer mderbyshire@ durhamregion.com We hearken back to a 1995 promise –– made by a former provincial premier –– that Durham would soon have a ‘super- court.’ Well, seven years have come and gone and the region, now 10 per cent more populated than when former NDP premier Bob Rae made that pledge, is no closer to that needed facility. Instead, Durham continues to muddle along with a grab-bag of courthouses, some obvious in a classic sense, some stuck in the middle of strip malls. It’s been a situation of catch-as- catch-can with regard to space needs, but time and growth have caught up with the Durham justice system. As Durham lawyer Alex Sosna, who has practised law for more than 26 years here says, “This has reached a crisis. For the sake of dollars and cents people are remaining in jail un- necessarily.” Mr. Sosna was referring to the terrible backlog at 242 King St. E., Oshawa, where bail court is a daily nightmare. Dozens of prisoners await hearings each day with a high of 66 people one day in July. With just one courtroom devoted to bail court, lawyers, justices of the peace, police and court staff can’t keep up with the volume. Why has the situation become a ‘crisis’? It’s simply a mat- ter of population growth matched against a system which has fallen far behind. As Mr. Sosna says, “The system worked 25 years ago. It isn’t working today, and as a result, people’s rights are being abused and ignored.” And the situation is only going to get worse. Durham now numbers half-a-million people and is expected to expand to close to a million within two decades. Action by the Province is needed before this crisis becomes a catastrophe. Durham certainly has the clout at the provincial cabinet table to make something happen. Finance minister Janet Ecker (Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge) holds the Province’s purse strings, Jim Flaherty (Whitby-Ajax), who came second to Premier Ernie Eves, is Minister of Enterprise, Opportunity and Innova- tion. Also seated at cabinet are Municipal Affairs Minister Chris Hodgson (Haliburton-Victoria-Brock), as well as Natur- al Resources Minister Jerry Ouellette (Oshawa). Durham MPP John O’Toole can also lend support to a Durham courthouse. Surely such a high-powered group can catch the premier’s ear and work to fast track this badly-needed project. Durham needs a professional, efficient, central courthouse to properly administer justice in this region. Another seven years must not go by before something is done. Verdict on courthouse needed in near future Volume of cases, number of accused strains the system DURHAM —If shopping and browsing in a scenic and historic setting appeal to you, here’s your chance to indulge yourself. The Durham YMCA supervised access pro- gram hosts its fifth an- nual fund-raising bus trip to the Mennonite village of St. Jacob’s on Sat- urday, Aug. 24. St. Jacob’s is located north of Waterloo. Shoppers can hit the craft show, the quaint main street in the village or visit the farmer’s market. A spe- cial price of $3.50 has been arranged for those who want to attend the craft show and sale. The bus will pick up passengers at the south Whitby GO Station at 8 a.m. with a second pick up at the Ajax YMCA, located at 230 Westney Rd. S. (Ontario Power Genera- tion) at 8:30 a.m. Tick- ets for the return trip in an air-conditioned coach are $30 and must be purchased in ad- vance. Tickets and more in- formation are available by calling 905-619- 4565, ext. 305. All proceeds will support the Durham su- pervised access pro- gram through the com- munity fund. Recommendations released in bid to spur action BY JACQUIE McINNES Staff Writer DURHAM ––A provin- cially-appointed transporta- tion panel says it’s time Durham and other central Ontario regions work smarter to connect the spots. Creating a public transit system people will want to use could be the key to reduc- ing gridlock through Durham and the GTA, suggests Whit- by Mayor Marcel Brunelle, the region’s only member on the central Ontario Smart Growth panel charged with solving growth-related issues in the GTA regions. “A while ago I introduced the concept of a Durham pass,” said Mayor Brunelle. In April, the mayor was ap- pointed to a panel of provin- cially-appointed politicians, business leaders, environ- mentalists and education sec- tor representatives to look at transit and waste manage- ment issues for an area span- ning Niagara Falls through the GTA and up to Halibur- ton. Wednesday, in its first rec- ommendations since it was created, the 19-member panel released 24 actions for all levels of government, aimed at reducing gridlock through central Ontario. “We really need to make it easy for people to get on the bus and go some place,” said Mayor Brunelle. Transfers from one municipal system to another should be timely, he said, noting, “when passen- gers get off one bus it should be no more than 10 to 15 minutes before they get on the next bus.” Local systems that only connect people to other parts of their own mu- nicipality are not sufficient to address the needs of most public transit riders, he added. At the beginning of 2002, Ajax and Pickering com- bined transit systems to allow riders more connectivity be- tween the municipalities while streamlining the sys- tem’s administration costs. Linking municipal transit systems is key to getting peo- ple on the buses and out of their cars thereby reducing gridlock and smog, said Mayor Brunelle. Recommendations of the Smart Growth panel include: • all levels of government and public and private transit providers commit to estab- lishing a basic grid of inter- regional bus service on major highways and major roads; • increase GO Transit ser- vices and the provision of a ‘higher order transit’ that op- erates independent of the reg- ular mix of traffic, on the most heavily used corridors; • local governments encour- age more use of municipal transit systems and ensure bus fleets and other transit ve- hicles are in good repair with expansion of transit in areas currently under-served by local transit; • increase access to transit with expansions of commuter parking lots at transit stations and expansion of discount fare passes and an increase in parking costs at workplaces where transit is accessible; • eliminate additional fares for GO Transit travellers transferring from GO to a local system; • improve the way traffic accidents are managed to clear the vehicles involved out of the way of traffic and; • find better ways to move goods by creating a goods movement strategy. The recommended actions will depend on a financial commitment by all levels of government, said Mayor Brunelle. “We need them (the provincial and federal gov- ernments) to help us have the ability to maintain the sys- tem. It all requires dollars. You can talk about wonderful schemes but unless you have a way to fund it, it isn’t going to do you any good.” NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 18, 2002 PAGE 7 A/P The Oshawa Durham Rape Crisis Centre is holding it’s Annual General Meeting on Monday September 30th Location: Trillium Trails Time: 11:00 a.m. Lunch and Guest Speaker to follow meeting For more information please contact Kim or Linda at 905-725-2241 Hi, I’m Janice Lerch. For more than 15 years I dreamed of being slim. Then I made an amazing weight loss dis- covery that helped me melt off 72 lbs. of fat in 12 easy months. My dress size plunged from a hefty 18 to a slender size 10 and it was effortless. If you are suffer- ing from a weight problem, please take a moment to read my amazing story. I believe that my weight loss discov- ery can make your dreams come true, too! Diets Don’t Work For 15 years my immense weight caused me pain and suffering. I suffered both physically and mentally. I avoided going out for fear someone might look my way. I always thought people were snickering behind my back. I hated to shop so I wore the same old clothes until they were faded and worn. I hid myself away and never expressed my true personali- ty. But that wasn’t the worst of it. Imagine what it was like to be 70 lbs. overweight and work as a desk clerk at a health club! I tried a multitude of diets, weight loss programs and gimmicks. I attended group meetings faithfully. I’d lose 5 to 10 pounds, get bored, stop going, and gain all my weight back. I didn’t like the way it was handled so I even- tually dropped out. I’d dream about being slim, but had no idea how to get there. I’d tell myself that I could stay on a diet. Two days later I’d be back to my same old fat-lady routine. The Miracle One day I read about Positive Changes Hypnosis in the newspaper. It was a big feature story (probably much like the one you’re reading now). I cut it out and put it on the refrigerator. Later that day I discussed it with my husband and we agreed that I should give Positive Changes a call. It was the best decision of my life! My first step was to attend the Positive Changes’free hypnotic screening. It was surprisingly fun and informa- tive. For the first time, I felt that someone understood what I was going through. It gave me a little spark of hope. I kept waiting for the sales pitch, but it never happened. I was never pressured. Everything was explained in detail and the fee was sur- prisingly reasonable. I knew that I desperate- ly needed help, and the Positive Changes philosophy made sense to me. I signed up. After my first hypno- sis session, I had no doubt that I’d come to the right place... Instant Results I arrived home from my first ses- sion with a big smile on my face. My husband asked me,“What’s up with you?” “Oh nothing,”I said. “I’m just in a good mood,”and I went right on smil- ing. I lost 4 lbs. that first week. After that, my weight kept melting away. In one month I’d taken off 16 lbs. My total reduction was 72 lbs. and four dress sizes. To be honest, I don’t even remember losing my weight - it was that fast and easy. Hypnosis eliminated my cravings and poor eating habits. I’m free from the has- sle of dieting forever! I don’t have to go to meetings, count calories, or weigh my food. I simply enjoy healthy, flavourful foods like fruits and vegetables, and drink lots of water. It’s been as if my mind is on autopilot. To be honest, I still don’t understand it. I just know that my weight melted away at an average of 3 pounds a week and I never felt deprived. Life Is Wonderful! When I look at old pictures, I can’t believe that was me. People tell me I look like I’ve had a facelift. My husband says I seem twenty years younger. I’m even saving money! My grocery bill has gone down because I no longer buy cookies, cake and ice cream. Now that I have lost my weight with hypnosis, I can’t even fathom ever gaining it back. Saved My Life The truth is, Positive Changes saved my life. If it weren’t for this program, I’d probably be over 200 pounds and miserable. That’s the rea- son I’m sharing my story, and the reason I’m recommending Positive Changes to you. I know that you’re skepti- cal. I was, too. But my skep- ticism vanished when my weight started melting off effortlessly. I’m confident that hypnosis can do the same for you. Now please don’t get trapped into thinking that I’m a single success story. I met a lot of nice people at Positive Changes and they were get- ting the very same results that I have. Change Your Life Today! So set your skepticism aside. Stop hesitating. Pick up your telephone and call Positive Changes Hypnosis right now. Ask to schedule your complimentary hypno- sis screening. Don’t worry, if the staff doesn’t think hypno- sis is right for you, they will tell you so. Take it from me, you have nothing to lose, and a whole lot to gain–like self- esteem, happiness, peace of mind, and freedom from your weight. Positive Changes gave me everything I needed to build a beautiful, healthy body and a wonderful frame of mind. Now go on, pick up the phone and call Positive Changes Hypnosis. Did you know this forest was once like a desert, with sand dunes? It’s because the pioneers cut down the trees for farm- ing. They had to because there were no supermarkets. The tree roots held the ground together, so when they were gone there was nothing to stop the wind and rain from making a desert. Then people planted trees to make a forest again. Thanks for letting me come here. I’ll write again later. ❑❑❑ BY MIKE RUTA Staff Writer DURHAM —Before the day has officially begun, a camper discovers an eastern grey tree frog hanging on the portable. It’s Week 3 of the Durham Forest Summer Day Camp at the Durham Forest Environmental Education Centre in rural Uxbridge, and roughly 30 campers aged seven to 12 are attend- ing ‘Amazing Arthropods.’ During the school year, the centre is a school for local Grade 6 students, offering curriculum connections a teacher would be hard-pressed to make in a classroom. But at camp, the emphasis is on fun and spontaneous learning, with education occurring, well, naturally. Whatever hops, crawls, flies or comes into view, or within earshot, is the topic of the moment. A crowd of youngsters gathers around camp director Jason Bellinger, who gently cradles the frog in his hand. A few, ‘can I touch hims’are heard, and the learning begins. “I’m not going to let you touch him; do you know why?” he asks. “Because he has germs?” says a voice. “No,” answers Jason. “Because he breathes through his skin.” He explains anyone wearing sunscreen or insect repellent could harm the creature. The campers call him ‘Fisher’. All the campers and staff choose a nature name. The campers retire to ‘The Outdoor Inn’, the portable that serves as a classroom, for a quick lesson before going out into the field. The field is Durham Forest, an Oak Ridges Moraine green space frequented by hikers and bikers. Each camper has a bug box to hold any arthropods, like grasshoppers, they discover. Groups are formed and the kids are off. Outdoor instructor Rebecca ‘Ptarmigan’Rand leads the youngest campers, the Beetles, into the for- est for fun and discovery that begins right away. She stops the group and has them listen to a birdcall that she notes sounds remarkably like, ‘drink your tea.’The bird is a rufous-sided towhee, Rebecca explains. After a short walk, the kids are turned loose in a small area to search for arthropods. Eight-year-old Oshawa cousins and first-time forest campers Molly Kett and Kirsten Pellerin are on the hunt. “I’m looking for a butterfly, a moth or a caterpillar, or anything else,” Molly says. Accepting a complimentary remark directed at the duo’s bug box, Molly says they learned how to make it themselves. “We’ve learned how to make lots of stuff,” says Kirsten. “We learned things about gardening, like how you have to pull the weeds to help the plants grow better,” Molly adds. A visitor along for the hike turns over a rotting log and finds a snake coiled up on the ground. It’s a red belly, Ontario’s smallest, and it’s ap- parently uncommon to see one. The snake is studied briefly be- fore being released. Dear Mom and Dad. Tomor- row night we go for a walk in the woods and I’m kinda scared. I know I’m not far from home, but it’s pretty wild up here and there could be wolves or anything in the forest. Ptarmigan promises it won’t be scary. At least I won’t be alone. ❑❑❑ It’s Griffin Work’s first year at the camp, and the seven-year-old from Oshawa is hard-pressed to say what he likes best. “Everything,” he replies. “I’m just getting everything zooming through my mind because there’s so many things I like.” He loves the forest, and fondly remembers playing in a small patch of bush near his grandpar- ents’house. The trees were felled to make a new house, Griffin notes. After dinner Thursday, the campers are split up into groups to work on short skits they will present to the others around the campfire after the night hike. Brett Foote, 11, of Port Perry, leads the Monarchs group as they rehearse their skit, ‘The Clumsy Soccer Player’. He’s a camp veteran, here for the fourth year. He hopes to return next year as a CIT — a counsellor in training. “It’s just a fun experience and the counsellors are great,” Brett says. The skit depicts a soccer game in which a player is injured and the coach sends in an awkward replacement that ends up scoring on his own goal. “It’s not entirely about nature stuff, but whatever,” Brett says. Thursday is a highlight of the week, the one night where the campers stay overnight, sleeping in tents. When it’s time for the night hike, the campers as- semble and get ready to go around 7:30 p.m. Darkness won’t descend for a while. Consider it a twilight hike, Rebecca says. The campers learn owl calls and near the end, Rebecca says it’s time for a solo walk. She explains she will walk down the trail a bit, stop and wait for the campers to arrive as they are released one-by-one by a CIT, who remains with the group. She explains an individual can hear and see a lot more than a group, where there is invariably conversation and other noise. Hi Mom and Dad. We went on a hike last night and guess what? I walked in the woods all by myself! Ptarmigan said she wanted us to walk alone so we could hear the sounds of the forest better. She was right! I heard the ‘drink your tea’bird and others. It wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be. Can I come back again next year? You already know that the five basic shoe compo- nents are the last, upper, midsole, heal and outsole. But what about outsole? How do different treads ful- fill the need of specific sports and surfaces? Too little traction will have a negative effect on athletic perfor- mance while too much traction may lead to injury. A running shoe should provide firm enough grip so that propulsion at toe-off is not lost. Push-off has the highest needs for traction , therefore, the fore part of the out sole should provide the most traction. The outsole by def- inition is the treaded layer glued to the bot- tom of the midsole. It resists wear, provides traction and absorbs shock. It should be flexible, easily flexing at the metatarsal where the foot bends. For those of you who are running on asphalt or cement, a ripple sole is recom- mended. It helps absorb contact stress. However, this tread can pick up small stones or mud. Those who run on grass or dirt will find a waffle outsole will improve traction and stability. It absorbs some of the transverse plane stress- es. It is, however, softer and tends to wear out more quickly. The thickness of the sole is also important in jogging shoes. Too thick a sole in the forefoot will cause some achilles tendon strain as well as being less flexible. Not enough thickness in the forefoot ... Continued on next page Slipping and Sliding? A heel lift will ease pressure on the achilles tendon and posterior calf muscles as well as allowing the centre of gravity and the body weight to be forced for- ward. Negative heel shoes (heel is lower than the forefoot) is not advised for running. With sprinting, initial ground contact is made at the front of the shoe, not at the heel. Anterior spikes help prevent slip- page. Tennis shoes are constructed for lateral motion and quick direction changes. The tread includes a pivot point with herringbone tread and some suction designs. The wide variety of surfaces such as clay, grass, asphalt or synthetic indoor courts will determine shoe types. The thicker the sole in hiking boots, the deeper the tread or “lugs”, which are designed for gripping the path. Deeper lugs are best for steep, rugged terrain, while shallow lug patterns are lighter and more flexi- ble. Exercise walking shoes have a smooth, low profile herringbone, pattern, excellent for forward stops, but poor for lateral stops. Basketball shoes have a high rubber content in the outsole with multiple design patterns for better traction. As you can see, the type motion, impact and surfaces need to be con- sidered when choosing a specific shoe tread. To avoid injury and to maximize your performance, you need to always get a grip of your- self. Durham elementary teacher named to union executive DURHAM —Local teacher Lorelei Crump was elected last week to the executive of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO). The ETFO held its annual meeting in Toronto at which Ms. Crump was picked to sit on the 13-person execu- tive of the 65,000-member union. She is slated to teach at Bolton C. Falby Public School in Ajax this school year. According to an ETFO press re- lease, Ms. Crump has been a full- time, part-time and occasional teacher, and has taught all elementary grades in addition to having been a teacher-librarian. At the Durham ETFO level, she has served as a steward, executive member, political action chair and member of the collective bargaining and status of women committees. Also at the ETFO meeting, former Oshawa teacher Sandra Gaskell was awarded an ETFO honorary life membership, the union’s highest form of recognition. Ms. Gaskell became an ETFO staff member and in 1995 was appointed deputy executive director, according to an ETFO press release. In that role she was responsible for co-ordinating collective bargaining, professional development, profes- sional relations and status of women services. She retired from the federation in 1998. Open to 12 women, the 20- week group will be held on Tues- day mornings beginning in Octo- ber. There is no cost and free child care and bus fare is available if needed. Group discussion, art therapy, and psychodrama, emotional re- lease work, videos and written work, are all used. Issues such as how the perpe- trator makes the child feel re- sponsible for the abuse, the ef- fects it has on children, and the ways people coped and felt about the abuse are addressed. Work is also done on fear, anger, grief, loss, trust, boundary issues, emotional intimacy and relationships, healthy sexuality and parenting. An information night for sup- porters, friends, and partners will also be held to help educate them about how sexual abuse affects someone, the healing process, and how they can best support the person without themselves be- coming burnt out. The Oshawa Community Health Care’s experience with the Survivors Group has been that it is important for the participants to have had some previous thera- py about the abuse and to not have a current substance abuse problem. Women who are suicidal, in a violent relationship, or have other pressing issues should get them addressed before attending such a group. Names are now being taken and group-screening interviews will be conducted throughout September. Interested women can phone Danielle at 905-723-0036 for more information or to set up a screening interview. Co-Steel partners with Brazilian company DURHAM –– Co-Steel Inc. of Whitby has merged its steel operations with a Brazilian compa- ny. The move, an- nounced Tuesday morning and in the works for sev- eral weeks, will create a better steel company, Co-Steel’s execu- tive vice-presi- dent said. “The parties think it’s a good idea,” said Lorie Waisberg. “The parties think it will create a much stronger steel company.” Co-Steel made the deal with Ger- dau SA of Rio de Janeiro to com- bine their North American steel operations. The Whitby partner owns 26 per cent of the new com- pany and Gerdau SA owns the re- maining 74 per cent. The only im- mediate change employees and customers will see is the renam- ing of Co-Steel as Gerdau AmeriS- teel Corporation. Co-Steel has close to 450 em- ployees and Mr. Waisberg said there won’t be re- structuring or lay- offs as a result of the merger. The new com- pany has 4,800 employees and is expected to gen- erate more than $2.5 billion in revenue annually, according to a news release. Durham athlete laments lack of breaks in must-win game BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer DURHAM ––Sommer West was hoping her Canadian women’s softball team was going to make a little noise at the World Championships by gaining an automatic berth into the 2004 Olympic Games. Unfortunately, the bats went silent. Hosting the International Softball Federation World Championships in Saskatoon, Canada had a golden oppor- tunity to gain entry into the 2004 Games in Athens, Greece. But after failing to qualify for the playoff round, the Cana- dians will have to rely on winning one of three future qualifying tournaments be- fore making travel plans to Greece. “Everybody gave everything they had. We just caught a bad streak,” said the 24-year-old Durham resident. “There wasn’t much more we could have done. We didn’t catch any breaks,” she added of Canada’s inability to get key hits at opportune times. Canada finished fifth in its pool at 3- 4 behind the United States (7-0), China (6-1), Chinese Taipei (5-2) and Italy (4- 3), failing to be among the top four to advance to the playoff round. Canada opened the tournament in impressive fashion beating Russia 4-0, but were then blanked by the defending world champions from the United States 4-0 and humbled by Chinese Taipei 5-1. After easily handling the Czech Re- public 7-0, Canada was edged 1-0 in a must-win game against Italy. A win would have qualified Canada for the playoff round. The national team closed out the tournament edging Netherlands Antilles 2-0 and losing 1-0 to China in extra in- nings. Describing her own play, West said she “didn’t have the strongest tourna- ment. I played well defensively, but my offence, there’s always room for im- provement.” In the playoff round, the United States won its fifth straight World Championship, beating the silver medal- lists from Japan 1-0 in the gold medal game. Chinese Taipei earned the bronze. Those three teams, along with China, have all earned entry into the 2004 Olympics based on finishing in the top four at Worlds. Comparing Canada’s play against the elite teams in the world, West said there is little to choose. The difference, she says, is the money allotted to the program of each country. “Funding and sponsorship,” she says without hesitation. “Look at the United States. That pro- gram gets a tremendous amount of fund- ing. Each player has four bats of their own - we don’t have that. “They have a bigger staff and can face live pitching everyday and that’s a huge benefit to them as opposed to hit- ting against a pitching machine.” With the baseball team disbanded until dates are set for upcoming Olympic qualifying tournaments, the talented two-sport athlete will shift her focus to hockey, where she will renew efforts to catch on with the national women’s team. A ball conflict prevented her from at- tending a recent camp in Montreal, but she is optimistic of an invitation to the next one in September. “I hope to get asked to that one,” she said, adding, “It might be my last kick at the can” to try and catch on with the na- tional program. Above, inside you'll find his display of Top Quality Vinyl Windows. Wayne Hutchison brings to the replacement window and door busi- ness a new and long overdue fea- ture. It's a Mobile Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada. "The day is gone when you car- ried some brochures and a sample window to a customer's home," explains Wayne. "So I obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window sam- ples." When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free estimate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mobile Showroom which you'll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Tech Weld 2000 series of vinyl windows which you're free to operate and you'll discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned without going outside. "After being in this business for 24 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market," says Wayne. "They're triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware." All Tech Weld 2000 vinyl win- dows come with Low E Glass which filters out the ultraviolet rays keep- ing your home cooler in the summer and eliminate fading of your cur- tains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame and hardware. Wayne would also like his cus- tomers to know that he does all of the estimates personally, eliminating the cost of a salesperson. Durham Windows and Doors also does all of its own installations, which ensures that every customer gets a high quality job done at the best possible price. Durham Windows and Doors is located at 696 King St. W. in Oshawa. For more information call (905) 579-2222 or 1-888-576-8575. MOBILE SHOWROOM Want to know what’s happening in Pickering? BE INFORMED! Loving wife of husband Ash for 48 years, very proud and loving mother of Ash- ley Jr., Cheryl (Brian), Sandra (George), An- drew (Kim), Christopher (Nancy) and David. Also very proud of her 8 grandchildren Dan (Carolyn, Matthew), Nancy, Charlene, Brian Jr., Erin, Chelsea, Brandon and Evan. So many happy memories of birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, academic and athletic achieve- ments. Nancy glowed with pride for each one of them, her family meant everything to her and they all loved her so dearly. She im- pressed everyone she met with her extraor- dinary grace and dignity. She never com- plained about the unbelievable pains of the past few months and always answered ques- tions about her health with "I'm doing fine, don't worry about me". She is now with An- gels in Heaven because she is one of them now, right Charlene !! We can just see her looking down on us with that very special smile. Good-by my love until we meet again. The family will receive friends at the Mc- EACHNIE FUNERAL HOME, 28 Old Kingston Road, Pickering Village, Ajax (905)428-8488 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Sunday, August 18, 2002.
