School council head

PICKERING — A local

trustees stick to the numbers when
they consider the elementary por-

One week before Christmas,
Durham District School Board
trustees approved the secondary
component of the three-year, sys-
tem-wide accommodation and
school improvement plan. At a total
cost of $39 million, trustees gave

Jail term handed down
after man kidnapped,
beat ex-girlfriend
BY STEPHEN SHAW
Staff Writer
DURHAM —A Pickering man
who kidnapped and terrorized his
ex-girlfriend, shaving her head as a
sign of control and watching while
buddies beat her with sticks and
stones, has been handed a seven-
year, four-month sentence.
“It was nothing more than good
fortune (victim Danielle Bongard)
was not seriously hurt or killed by
the beating,” said Madam Justice
Myrna Lack during sentencing
Thursday in Whitby Superior
Court of Justice.
“There was... violence of a gra-
tuitous nature.”
Dwayne Kevin George, 22, for-
merly of Geta Circle, and his
friend Jason Brown-Campbell, 20,
of Scarborough, were found guilty
last month after a jury trial of 15
charges, including break and enter
with intent, kidnapping, unlawful
confinement, assault with a
weapon and assault causing bodily
harm.
Mr. Brown-Campbell also re-
ceived a four-year term.
Prior to the kidnapping, Mr.
George was charged with setting
Ms. Bongard’s apartment on fire
and killing her cat, court heard, but
when she recanted her statement to
police, the case was dropped and
he was released from jail.
On May 2, 2000 Mr. George
showed up at her Oshawa home
and questioned her about speaking
with police, court was told. He
made Ms. Bongard take off her
clothes and held her head under
scalding shower water.
The next day, court was told,
Mr. George and Mr. Brown-Camp-
bell, who hid in a closet, confront-
ed the 20-year-old mother of two

Woman was beaten, forced to shave head
young daughters in her Linden
Court townhouse.
Mr. George spin-kicked Ms.
Bongard in the head, punched her
several times, forced her to shave
her hair, ripped a ring out of her
eyebrow, and led her to a waiting
van, which took her to a wooded
area in Scarborough.
During the ride Mr. George sat
in the back seat with Ms. Bon-
gard, holding a butcher knife to
her cheek and inside her mouth,
court was told.
Ms. Bongard testified Mr.
George marched her into the for-
est and continuously punched her
until she fell into a creek and
blacked out.
When she regained conscious-
ness, Mr. George stood and
watched while directing two
friends — Mr. Brown-Campbell
and an unidentified masked man
— who both struck her with
sticks and rocks and tried to
break her nose, court heard.
On May 13, a battered Ms.
Bongard was found by police in
Montreal crouched in a hotel
room closet, where she was
forced for refusing to eat plastic.
Prosecutor Jinwon Kim said
Mr. George “terrorized” the vic-
tim as payback for talking to po-
lice and the attacks bordered on
“torture.
“No one deserves to be treat-
ed like she was by Mr. George...
Degrading, controlling and ter-
rorizing her are part of this ven-
ture.”
Mr. George’s lawyer said “it
wasn’t the most serious” of kid-
napping cases and noted Ms.
Bongard suffered no lasting in-
juries.
Victor Giorgas also said the
victim continued to contact his
client after his arrest and sent
photographs of herself to him in
jail.
Mr. George has spent 22 hours
each day in lockdown in the seg-
regation unit for his own protec-
tion, said Mr. Giorgas, who urged
Madam Justice Lack to give him
triple credit for time served in
pretrial custody.
The judge credited Mr. George
with three years and four months
pretrial custody — based on the
normal two-for-one formula —
for a total sentence of seven years
and four months.
The judge also made an order
for police to seize a sample of Mr.
George’s blood for the national
DNA data bank.
Mr. Brown-Campbell, who
was credited with three months
pretrial custody, told the court he
wanted to “express my sympa-
thy” to Ms. Bongard, who was
not at the hearing.
Mr. Brown-Campbell is cur-
rently serving a one-year robbery
sentence.

Put your skills to good use in Durham
DURHAM —Expanded programs
in Durham Region means the Ontario
March of Dimes needs more volunteers.
Increased services include a local ad-
visory committee,a ‘designability’com-
mittee and a partnership with the Victo-
rian Order of Nurses’ friendly visitor
program.
The local advisory committee is
being re-established to assist individuals
with disabilities gain access in the com-
munity. The group will also provide
input into program planning and imple-
mentation, and community relations.
Volunteers for the designability com-
mittee should be creative, technically-
skilled individuals who adapt, design
and build devices that assist individuals
with disabilities. Volunteers would work
with consumers to find simple, cost-ef-
fective solutions to everyday problems.
Possible volunteers include occupation-
al therapists, engineers and trades peo-
ple.
Through the friendly visitor pro-
gram, volunteers would spend one to
two hours a week visiting seniors or dis-
abled adults.

Uxbridge Secondary School and Dun-
barton High School. In doing so they de-
layed a decision about the elementary
part of the plan until this month.
John Kehoe, school council chairman
at Valley Farm Public School, has at-
tended several recent meetings and
heard some trustees refer to the draft
version of the plan as something that can
be changed. That may be true, said Mr.
Kehoe, but the draft also represents
board staff’s best recommendation to
trustees. “The original draft was a pro-
fessional document drawn up by experts
with real numbers and real solutions,” he
said in an interview. “These recommen-
dations threaten to be undermined by
each trustees’ need to take care of his
own backyard.”
After trustees approved the sec-
ondary part of the plan, facilities ser-
vices superintendent Jack Massie said
staff’s recommendation for elementary
schools stands.
At the last meeting before the holi-
days, Scugog Trustee Martin Demmers
tried to remove Epsom Public School
from the plan. Slated for closure because
of low enrolment, residents are fighting
to keep the Scugog school open. He has
also queried staff about removing from
the plan schools where communities are
fighting their closure.
The latter is of concern to Mr. Kehoe
and Valley Farm parents because if the
schools were to stay open, trustees in a
report from staff heard, not all of the
projects in the draft plan could be com-
pleted. That includes a 10-room addition
Valley Farm is to receive.
Mr. Kehoe said he could understand
trustees who want to support schools in
their own municipality, but “the bottom
line is how many children are benefit-
ing” in the plan.
With some help from board staff, Mr.
Kehoe said he has determined how
many students benefit in schools affect-
ed by staff’s recommendation and the
scenario in which most schools slated
for closure remain open. In the first case,
he estimates more than 1,500 students
would be better off because new schools
and additions are built. In the so-called
Plan B, that number drops to about 780.
“This (780) number doesn’t take into
account all the children that would be re-
located from fully-functioning schools
to beef up the enrolment (at smaller
schools),” he said.
Trustees are expected to approve the
elementary part of the accommodation
plan at a special meeting, not yet sched-
uled, before the Jan. 21 board meeting.
DURHAM —Paramedics in Durham Region
complied with legislation that requires them to get
the flu shot each year.
Michael Dick, head of the local paramedics
union, said the paramedics, all Durham Region
employees, were informed by letter they could be
fired if they didn’t get flu shots. So they got them,
although “not by choice”, he said.
“We had basically 100-per cent compliance
within the time frame, Dec. 21,” said Richard
Armstrong, the regional director of emergency
medical services. The Province added a mandato-
ry flu shot to the list of job requirements for para-
medics in 2000, although it leaves it up to munic-
ipalities to enforce the legislation.
A North Bay paramedic has been banned from
work since Dec. 22 for refusing to get his flu shot.
Some paramedics from Toronto, most of whom
have not gotten flu shots, joined in protesting the
legislation late last week.

“I Lost 32 Lbs. Effortlessly!”
My name is Janine Joyner. I live
with my husband, Chip, and my
three children, Wesley, Catelyn and
Alex. I work with my husband as a
secretary.
I dropped 32 pounds in six short
months with Positive Changes
Hypnosis. My dress size plunged
from a snug 14 to a comfortable 8.
I have not been paid a penny for
sharing my story with you.
My Struggle
I gained my weight after Catelyn
was born. After my last baby, I
could not get my weight off.
In Six Short Months...
My Mom saw a great big ad in
the newspaper about weight loss
with hypnosis. She showed it to my
sister Melinda, and me. We were
impressed. A lady named Pat had
lost 105 lbs. in ten months. She
talked about a free hypnosis
screening at Positive Changes
Hypnosis. We decided to give it a
try.
Melinda signed up first. She lost
7 lbs. the first week. That
convinced my Mom and me. We
signed up together. We lost 32
lbs. each. I lost my weight in
6 short months. Hypnosis
made it simple and easy.
Instant Results
Right after our first
session my mom and I
went to Chick-Fil-A. We
couldn’t begin to finish our
food. We ordered sweet iced tea. It
tasted disgusting. I haven’t had a
single craving for soda or sweet tea
since. I have no desire for fast food
or junk food. I once pulled into a
fast food drive-through and then
drove right out. None of it
appealed to me.
At first I lost about a pound a
week. I didn’t mind. I was
intrigued to see the positive
changes in myself. Then in the last
four months my weight melted off.
I never felt discouraged. Not once.
With Positive Changes my weight
loss was positive in every way. I
feel great and my doctor is thrilled.
Best of all, I feel on top of the
world. I haven’t had to use my
asthma inhaler since last July. I’ve
got physical endurance. When I
was fat, I couldn’t exercise for two
minutes. I felt like I was about to
die. Now I exercise for twenty
minutes straight. It’s a snap. I have
so much energy. It’s easy to stay
motivated.
Impressed...
Folks used to say, “There’s no
way you’re going to lose weight.
You’re middle-aged!” I guess I
showed them a thing or two! My
friends and family teased me about
my hypnosis. I heard every
swinging watch joke imaginable.
They’re not teasing anymore. I get
compliments almost every day.
I believe with all my heart that if
I had gone with a diet center, I
would have been a yo-yo. With
hypnosis I am confident that I will
never gain my weight back. I’m a
completely changed person. That’s
why I’ve given away every stitch of
my fat clothes!
I’m convinced most anyone can
lose weight with hypnosis. It’s the
reason I have referred my friends
and family to Positive Changes
Hypnosis, and the reason I agreed
to share my story with you.
There’s got to be something to
hypnosis. It worked for my mom,
Melinda and me. So don’t hesitate.
Don’t even think about going on a
diet. You know diets don’t work.
Call Positive Changes Hypnosis
today. Go to the free evaluation. Sit
down and talk with these folks.
Then you’ll know what to do.
“I Shed 32 Lbs. in 3 Short
Months!”
Hi, I’m Pat Johnson. I have been
married to my husband, Rob, for
38 years. I have three daughters. I
am an office manager at my
husband’s business.
Last year at this time, I was busting
the seams of my size 14’s. Three
months later, I was a trim size 8!
I’ve kept my weight off effortlessly
ever since. This is my true story of
lasting weight loss success.
Dieting Yo-Yo
I must have lost and regained my
weight 50 times. I starved on diet
shakes. Popped over-the-counter
diet pills. Spent a fortune on a
national weight loss center. With
each diet I felt more deprived. The
minute I stopped dieting, the
pounds
were
right back
plus
more.
Food
was
controlling
me. I didn’t eat to
live. I lived to eat. I’d
get up from my meals
thinking what can I
snack on? I
constantly worried
about my weight. It
made me eat more.
The Answer
I first heard about
Positive Changes
Hypnosis at a
seminar. I met a
lady who was
thrilled with her
results. I started
noticing the ads
in the paper.
The folks in
the ads all said
it was easy to
lose weight with hypnosis. After all
my dieting struggles, could weight
loss really be easy? I was skeptical.
I showed the ads to my two
daughters, Melinda and Janine.
They wanted lose weight too. We
talked it over. Decided we
had nothing to lose. The screening
was fascinating and fun. Our
consultant said we could come in
together. That put my mind at ease.
Each of us responded a little
differently. Our consultant was
genuinely concerned about our
needs. I was impressed with
Positive Changes. Losing weight
without dieting made good sense.
Yet my skepticism remained
strong. I had failed at dieting so
many times. Melinda signed up
first. She lost 7 lbs. the first week.
Melinda was all smiles. “Yes,” she
said, “it’s as easy as they say.”
Janine and I signed up a week later.
“Easy” Weight Loss!
Positive Changes Hypnosis is
the easiest way to lose weight. On
diets I counted, weighed, measured
or craved. None of that with
hypnosis. I reached my goal weight
effortlessly. My family and friends
compliment me all the time. I love
it!
I used to have a cola in my hand
like a permanent fixture. The day
after I was hypnotized, I realized
my cola craving had vanished! The
next day I tried a sip. My first
thought was, why did I crave this?
That’s when I knew hypnosis
would help me. My skepticism
dissolved.
I know I will keep my weight
off. I can sit back, relax and let my
mind take over. Hypnosis is never
drudgery, like dieting. I don’t mess
with special foods. I eat what I
want. I’m in control.
Smart Investment
I would have expected to
pay a fortune for the kind of
service and results I received
from Positive Changes
Hypnosis.
Folks who
have been on any diet
program know exactly
what I mean. Positive
Changes Hypnosis’ fees
were amazingly low. It
was the smartest
investment of my life. I
recommend it to anyone.
And I have! Several of my
family members and friends
are also experiencing great
results. I met all kinds of
people at Positive Changes
who are getting fantastic results
like mine.
Believe me, I never dreamed
I’d do an ad like this. I’ve never
considered endorsing a product
or service before. I believe in
Positive Changes Hypnosis. They
helped Melinda, Janine and me. I
know they can help you. give them
a call. Schedule your free
screening. What have you got to
lose? Call now.
“I Dropped 55 Lbs. Without
Dieting!”
My name is Melinda Russell. I’m
an administrative assistant. My 55
lbs. melted off in six short months. I
thought I was destined to be forever
fat. Then I made my astounding
discovery...”
My Warning Signal
My weight skyrocketed about six
years ago. That’s when I married
my husband, Ray. I fell into the
comfortable married lady routine. I
knew Ray was concerned about my
weight gain. He could see the
changes in my disposition. Ray
became my comfort and support.
“You’re the most beautiful woman
I’ve ever seen,” he told me. But I
was still miserable!
I tried losing weight on my own.
I’d drift to sleep each night with a
promise. Tomorrow I’ll start my
diet. I’d awaken with the burn of
hunger pains. Maybe I’ll get me a
biscuit. I’ll do better at lunch. I’d be
starving by 10:00 a.m. I couldn’t get
through the afternoon without a
snack. I’ll do good at supper.
Day after day the same old
routine. Sometimes I’d munch down
a half bag of cookies while planning
my next diet! My eating was out of
control. My self-esteem had hit rock
bottom.
Hope
One day I overheard my mom
and sister talking about an ad in the
newspaper. At first I tuned them out.
Then I heard my Mom say these
were local folks who had lost as
much as 105 pounds with hypnosis.
That got my attention! Still, I was
skeptical. Hypnosis?
The free screening was full of
surprises. Our consultant was
friendly and
professional. She
made us feel at
home. I told her
about my past
failures. How I
wanted to lose my
weight for
good. She
understood
my needs.
Two days later
I called back
and signed up.
I lost 7 lbs. the
first week.
That’s when
my
skepticism
vanished. 6
1/2 months
later I had
lost my
entire 55 lbs!
It was easy.
My dress size
dropped from
a plump 22
to a trim size
12. Losing
my weight
with hypnosis was the
smartest decision of
my life.
Permanent Change
My habits started changing right
after my first session. My snacking
habits vanished instantly. I wasn’t
hungry or cranky at any time during
my program. I no longer feel like
my stomach’s gnawing at my
backbone. Thanks to Positive
Changes Hypnosis I uncovered the
cause of my weight and conquered
it! That’s why I’m certain that I’ll
stay thin for good.
100% Improvement
When I was overweight, I
suffered from cold after cold. I was
always tired. Thanks to hypnosis,
those days are long gone. I’m active
and energetic.
I get a tingle of joy every time I
see myself in a mirror. My husband
says he’s thrilled because I’m so
happy. He no longer asks me out to
dinner. He asks me out on a date!
I feel 100% better about myself. I
had almost forgotten what it was
like to have a stranger give me a
look or whistle. I used to think they
were jerks. Now I just smile and
think to myself, “Thanks, Positive
Changes.”
I met lots of other folks at PCH
who were getting results just like
me. My mom and sister both signed
up two weeks after me. They lost all
their weight too. That makes three
living, breathing success stories. I
can’t begin to say enough about my
amazing experience with
Positive Changes.
About Your
Happiness...
That’s my story.
Everything I
said is the honest to
goodness truth. I shared
my story with the hope
that, in some small way, I
will help someone who is
suffering like I was.
Now what about your
happiness? If you’re where I was,
overweight and unhappy, for
goodness sake call Positive
Changes Hypnosis today. Attend
their free hypnotic screening.
You’ll find honest, caring people
who have your best interests at
heart. Their fees are reasonable and
they treat you like royalty.
Like I said at the beginning. No
one deserves to be unhappy. Don’t
miss out on the happy, healthy life
you were born to live. Call now.

Would doubling
the stops pay off?
To the editor:
Every week the garbage collection
truck stops at each house on my street.
Some houses only have one bag on the
curb, some have up to four.
Wouldn’t it be much more efficient
and cost-effective if the collection truck
could stop once every two houses? My
neighbour’s garbage is less than 20 feet
from mine. If I was to put my collectibles
with his, that would save the truck stop-
ping at my house.
I have watched the man get out of his
truck, pick up one bag, throw it in the
truck, then drive 20 feet to the next pile.
The wear and tear on the truck must be
tremendous.
I know there is a four-bag limit on
pickups per household, but could it not be
an eight-bag limit for every other house-
hold? It may take a little co-operation be-
tween neighbours, but if it could save us
some money I’m sure neighbours would
be willing to do their part.
This concept may take years to perfect
and work out the details, but how long
has it taken to convince taxpayers to re-
cycle, despite those who still refuse to do
it?

NEWS ADVERTISER JANUARY 6, 2002
Predictions for the coming year:
• Ernie Eves will win the leader-
ship of the Ontario Progressive Con-
servative Party in March and by the
end of 2002 will make a decision on
whether to leave his $1.2 million a
year job with a foreign bank.
• Ajax Regional Councillor Scott
Crawford will get one haircut in
2002.
• Regional councillors will give
themselves another pay raise. Only
those opposed to the increase will
stand up and voice an opinion. Coun-
cillors supporting the extra dough
won’t have the spine to say why they
deserve the money.
• Osama bin Laden will be found,
thus setting up the most pressing, and
depressing, situation: What gig will
Geraldo Rivera find? Couldn’t the
U.S. military do us a favour and seal
him in a cave?
• One of my cats, Buddy, will
drive me nuts, while the other, Wolf,
will be mistaken for a furry pig or a
brown, striped cushion with legs.
• Jean Chretien, sadly, will contin-
ue to be the prime minister, having
decided the country needs a leader
whose sole purpose is to take up a
seat.
• To the horror of editorial car-
toonists nationwide, Stockwell Day
will not win the leadership of the
Canadian Alliance. To the delight of
federal Liberals, Stephen Harper will.
• No one will notice anything the
New Democratic Party does.
• Catherine Clark will rank higher
in opinion polls than her old man,
Joe.
• Ajax Ward 2 local Councillor Joe
Dickson will use his recent heart at-
tack as an excuse for shortening his
work day to 14 hours.
• Regional taxes will increase by at
least five per cent. Municipal taxes
will go up by an average of six per
cent. Inflation will rise by two per
cent.
• The economy will improve, giv-
ing politicians a chance to pat them-
selves on their backs for their prudent
fiscal management.
• Unfortunately, someone will die
in a hospital waiting room. A lame
excuse will be issued about the feds
shirking their responsibility and the
Province not living up to their end of
the bargain. By the end of the year,
nothing will have changed.
• Oshawa politicians will again
criticize the existence of Durham Re-
gion. Pols from other communities
will take them up on the offer to
leave.

Bet on it in 2002: bin Laden exposed, Ernie wins big
Meanwhile, Crawford remains a cut above, more dough for council and Joe calls it a 14-hour day
Friends of the environment in Durham Region are still reeling
after the untimely death of crusader Irene Kock, who was killed in
an automobile accident New Year’s Eve.
Just 40 at the time of her death,Ms. Kock spent the past 15 years,
along with her partner David Martin, battling to publicize concerns
over the production of nuclear power. Her group, Durham Nuclear
Awareness (DNA), which moved under the umbrella of the Sierra
Club of Canada last year, continuously challenged Ontario Power
Generation (OPG) and before that, Ontario Hydro, on issues sur-
rounding the Pickering and Darlington nuclear generating stations.
She was emboldened to act after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in
the Ukraine in 1986.
All the efforts of DNA helped raise more than 160 issues affect-
ing the Pickering plant and led to a move to clean up the problems.
DNA was not the only focus of Ms. Kock’s efforts. She was also
heavily involved in the Uxbridge Conservation Association and was
part of the effort to keep development off the Oak Ridges Moraine.
UCA, along with many other groups, played a major role in con-
vincing the Province to work a land flip with developers that has
protected the vast majority of the moraine from future development.
All those who dealt with Ms. Kock, even those who found them-
selves on the other side of the issues she vigorously debated, praised
her for her dedication, intelligence and professionalism over the
years. OPG spokesman Pat O’Brien, who said he disagreed with
Ms. Kock on philosophy admitted, “She was always extremely
committed, very professional and had high ethics... I respected her
for her commitment and the professional manner in which she put
forward her argument.”
Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs added, “She’ll be missed. She
was a very strong advocate on behalf of the environment. She en-
sured issues stayed in front of the public.”
UCA member Teresa Johnston noted, “Irene was a terrific
leader, an awesome person. She was very strong and level-headed.
She wouldn’t fly off the handle.”
Ms. Kock’s legacy of not settling for the pat answer or easy ex-
planation served not only the organizations to which she belonged,
but the general public at large. In a society such as ours, where
many public bodies function out of the glare of the spotlight, watch-
dogs like Ms. Kock are absolutely vital. Her years of single-mind-
ed dedication and loyalty to the cause of public safety and environ-
mental responsibility have made life better for us all.
As Sierra Club president Elizabeth May said, “If she made a
statement, there was no guesswork.”
As we mourn Ms. Kock’s death we can only hope another ener-
getic, committed person, someone who has learned much from her
example, will step forward and speak up for our welfare.

It is rare to find a person with-
out sensitivities; this person would
have inherited a strong immune sys-
tem from parents of the same.
The Advantage of a strong
immune system for coping with
today’s toxicity would be a plus;
Some of the detrimental causes of
health today. I’m referring to are: Our
demineralized soil and the acidic
foods produced, synthetic food addi-
tives, air pollution and chemicals in
water.
Sensitivities can be developed at
any time in life and in a lot of cases
can be omitted with proper cleansing
and care of the colon. The colon is
responsible for rehydrating the body
and the evacuation of metabolic
waste. People with constipation can
filter toxins back into the body
instead of water, and with occurrence
of diarrhea, water is expelled without
properly rehydrating the body which
stresses the organs.

vides the food sensitivity test, which

Curves for Women®, 30 Minute
Fitness and Weight Loss Centres,
celebrated its one year anniversary in
Pickering with a party. With over 300
members and more joining daily,
Curves International considers the
Pickering franchise a success in its
first year of operation. Now Joanna is
opening her second location on Jan.
14th in the Gates Plaza at Altona Rd.
in West Pickering.
Curves provides a thirty minute
total workout and weight loss
counselling in the same place.
“The reason Curves for Women
franchises grew so rapidly is because
Curves is a unique concept in the
exercise industry,” says owner and
manager Joanna Lopez. “The facility
is built around a breakthrough in
exercise with the use of the Quickfit
circuit. It’s a complete workout in just
half an hour.”
The Quickfit circuit is a system of
exercise that alternates hydraulic
resistance machines with aerobic
recovery stations. As you move around
the circuit, enjoying the music, you
perform both a cardio and strength
training workout at the same time.
“The thirty minute total workout
burns as much as 500 calories,” says
Joanna. “Because you’re moving fluid
rather than weights, its safe for any
age or condition.
Weight loss is the main reason
women join our facility,” says Joanna.
“But along with weight loss are health
reasons such as osteoporosis, arthritis
and diabetes; more energy; decrease
stress and firm up. Members are
successful in reaching their f itness
goals for the first time because the
workout is quick and fun, the
atmosphere is not intimidating, and
monthly consultations monitor and
motivate. We also run challenges and
exciting promotions that encourage
members to come three times a week,
the best frequency for the best
results.”
The testimonials given by the
facility’s members are an indication of
the facility’s success:
Member Nancy Raby, “the Curves
for Women program fits my busy
lifestyle. I get a complete workout of
strength training and cardio, which
has improved my flexibility, and
lowered my blood pressure. My f irst
goal was to lose 45 pounds, which I have accomplished by
exercising, cutting carbohydrates, sugars and fats. My next
goal is to lose 25 more pounds and with the combination of
exercise and food control, I feel confident that it will
happen. One other reason Curves is so attractive is the
friendly and supportive atmosphere. I look forward to my
workout every morning.”
Member Lorna Cotter says “my New Year’s resolution
was to do something for me. This workout can be done in
30 minutes and I get rid of my stress in that time. I have lost
11 pounds, but the more incredible thing is I have shrunk
18 inches!
I look forward to coming to Curves and I enjoy that it is
only for women.”

What is Dentistry About?
Over the past few year cos-
metic dentistry has been very much
in the public eye. There is nothing
wrong with this. We all want to look
as good as we can. Still, there is
much more to dentistry than an even
row of pretty chiclets. Even from the
point of view of appearance, there is
more.
A common example: the
development of wrinkles in the lower
part of the face is though by many to
be an inescapable part of the aging
process; but so is loss of teeth. Few
realize that there is a relationship
between these signs of aging. The
loss of back teeth means that the
mouth closes too far, and the chin
and the nose are closer together. this
results in the facial muscles becom-
ing shorter but the skin covering
them does not, hence the wrinkles.
So what? As long as our front
teeth look good, who cares about the
back teeth? There are lots of soft food,
there are vitamin pill, and there are
blenders, so we can manage a reason-
able good diet even if we can’t chew.
In the first place, the front
teeth are not going to look good for
very long if the back teeth are not
there to support them. Any point on
the jaw moves forward as it moves
up; and since the upper front teeth
usually overlap the lower, pressure is
exerted which may push the upper
teeth forward or the lower teeth back
or both. It may also break down the
supporting bone or wear the teeth
down. None of these results excludes
the others; you may get any one, any
two, or all of them.
What we are saying is that
teeth have other functions besides
the obvious things like chewing and
appearance. They also participate in
the array of sensory apparatus that
protects the upper end of the diges-
tive and respiratory systems - both of
which need to be highly selective
about what is to be allowed in. This
is why a hair that you can’t feel with
our finger feels like a cable or a rasp-
berry seed like a golf ball. They also
play a part in speech. Imagine trying
to say “false teeth” without teeth!
Another function, which has
already been implied earlier- is skele-
tal. The jaw joints - often referred to
as the temporomandibular joints or
TMJ’s - carry the back end of the jaw,
and the teeth carry the front en. It
therefore follows that if the teeth are
not meeting as they should , then the
joints maybe out of position too.
The importance of this is
somewhat controversial; but many
respected dental practitioners believe
that this type of alteration in the way
the teeth meet may, in some cases,
affect the joints themselves and the
muscles that move the jaw. Some
types of chronic headache, ear pain
where there is no discernible cause
found in the ears themselves, and
even neck pain have been ascribed to
this abnormality.
There are those who subscribe
to the idea that these problems usual-
ly have a psychological cause, many
ADVERTISING FEATURE
others, while recognizing the role of
psychology and emotional stress,
still feel that the stress operates
through physical agencies, and that
these are frequently more amenable
to treatment than the psychological
component.
While recognizing that we do
not yet have the final answer, practi-
tioners using several different
approaches have reported good
results over a number of years. In our
office we use a method based on
attempting to determine what the
muscles want and giving it to them.
This has been effective in most,
though admittedly not all of the
patients that we have treated. Similar
results have been reported by practi-
tioners who use other methods, and
we have no reason to doubt them. In
this, as in many other fields, nobody
has all the answers.
In summary, this is what den-
tistry is about - the maintenance of
the health, structure and comfortable
function of the mouth and its compo-
nent parts.

First, this is 100% digital hearing aid technology. And what
that means in quality of hearing is huge. Digital sound is
created by tiny computer chips that separate each sound
clearly and crisply. You can compare for yourself by thinking
how movies sounded 10 years ago to going to a theatre and
hearing digital sound.
These digitals are available in canal style, full shell and
behind the ear digitals. Digitals are also available in CIC

Older population at
greatest risk of going
blind from macular
degeneration
BY ELLEN ASHTON-HAISTE
Special to the News Advertiser
Mom was right after all.
When she said, “Eat your car-
rots, they’re good for your eyes”,
she didn’t have the benefit of re-
search into the role vitamins and
minerals play in preserving good
eyesight. But as we know today,
it’s great advice.
Science has known for some
time a diet rich in orange and
green leafy vegetables — those
rich in antioxidant vitamins and
minerals like C, E and zinc —
was good for vision and particu-
larly beneficial in preventing age-
related macular degeneration
(AMD), the leading cause of
blindness in the Western world
among adults aged 50 or older.
Now a study has proven sup-
plementation with a multi-vita-
min containing those anti-oxi-
dants can reduce the risk and pro-
gression of the disease.
“This is the first really potent
evidence we’ve got to suggest
that we now have an effective
prevention to slow progression of
AMD in the form of dietary sup-
plements,” said Dr. Alan Cruess,
head of the department of oph-
thalmology at Queen’s University
in Kingston and a specialist in
retinal diseases at Hotel Dieu and
Kingston General hospitals. “I
think this is very, very exciting
news for patients who are at risk
for this disease, or who have early
stages of the disease.”
The Age Related Eye Disease
Study (AREDS), an ongoing
multi-centre clinical trial con-
ducted by the American National
Eye Institute and published in
October in the Archives of Oph-
thalmology, showed a 25-per cent
risk reduction or reduced progres-
sion of AMD in patients who
were already in early stages or
showed risk indicators of devel-
oping the disease. The trial fol-
lowed participants, ranging from
55 to 80 years old, for more than
six years, comparing results from
a vitamin supplement containing
vitamin C (500 mg), vitamin E
(400 IU), beta carotene (15 mg)
and zinc (80 mg) with copper (2
mg of cupric oxide) against a
placebo control.
A noteworthy aspect of the re-
sults, said Dr. Cruess, is that the
greatest benefit was seen in those
who were most at risk of losing
their sight to the disease. The par-
ticipants were divided into
groups, or strata, depending on
the severity of the AMD, ranging
from no symptoms to more severe
forms. “Those strata that actually
benefited the most were patients
who had a moderate degree of
change already,” he said.
In the past, a diagnosis of
AMD often meant loss of sight
was on the horizon. The best ad-
vice doctors could give their pa-
tients was to make some lifestyle
changes. A major one, Dr. Cruess
said, was to stop smoking, which
alone could reduce the risk of
AMD by two and a half times.
Another was to adopt a diet rich
in fruits and vegetables contain-
ing antioxidants.
“We knew those patients who
had higher blood levels of beta
carotene and other antioxidants
did better and had a lower risk of
disease progression,” he said.
“What we didn’t know in the
1990s was whether supplement-
ing with antioxidants in pill form
would be beneficial. So we
weren’t in a position to give our
patients positive, clear-cut advice.
Now we can recommend these di-
etary supplements in addition to a
healthy lifestyle.”
While the AREDS trial did not
include carotenoids such as lutein
and zeaxanthin in its vitamin for-
mulations, there is evidence to
suggest these may also be benefi-
cial for AMD sufferers, Dr.
Cruess said.
Carotenoids are naturally oc-
curring pigment compounds that
give fruits and vegetables their
distinctive colours, tastes and
odours and are particularly plenti-
ful in green, yellow and orange
vegetables.
About 20 carotenoids — of
some 600 detected in nature —
are found in human tissues.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are the
dominant pigments found in the
macula of the eye.
“There is evidence that in-
creasing macular pigment density
may have a protective effect and
we know that lutein and zeaxan-
thin are the yellow pigment that’s
concentrated in the centre of the
macula, the very centre of the
reading vision portion of the reti-
na, the seeing film in the back of
the eye,” Dr. Cruess explained.
Regardless of why they work,
Dr. Cruess said it’s clear they are
important.
As a result many vitamin man-
ufacturers will be adding these
protective agents to their formula-
tions, he said.

DriveABLE?
Assessment tool
checks ability of
dementia sufferers
DURHAM —For many adults,
driving is about independence, an
inherent right in our automobile-
dominant society.
But for those with Alzheimer’s
disease, Parkinson’s and other
neurological disorders and demen-
tia, driving can be risky, a danger
to themselves and all others who
share the road.
Studies show 30 to 40 per cent
of people suffering from dementia
continue to drive. Within a few
years of dementia diagnosis, 40 to
50 per cent of those continuing to
drive will have an accident. Eighty
per cent of those who crash will
keep driving and of those who do,
40 per cent will have at least one
more crash.Twenty-five per cent of
those diagnosed with dementia
and told to stop driving continue to
operate a vehicle anyway.
That’s where DriveABLE
comes in. DriveABLE is an assess-
ment tool to measure the compe-
tency of people with medical condi-
tions known to affect driving ability.
The tool was developed after eight
years of study by a team or re-
searchers, physicians and driving
experts.
The Ministry of Transportation
has approved the use of Drive-
ABLE.
On Feb. 1, the Alzheimer Soci-
ety of Durham Region will welcome
Dr.Allen Dobbs, a psychologist, re-
searcher and the founder of Drive-
ABLE.
His seminar, ‘The medically at-
risk driver’ takes place at 1 p.m. in
the Heritage Centre, 120 Roberson

The seminar is open to family
and professional caregivers of
medically-at-risk drivers.There is a

gion at 905-576-2567 or 1-888-

ula, the centre of the reading vision portion of the retina, which is

Study scans
need for
better bone
testing
Figures show
post-menopausal women
require closer monitoring
A new study underlines the need
for women over age 50, particularly
those who are post-menopausal, to
take measures — such as exercise,
calcium and vitamin D supplementa-
tion — to prevent osteoporosis and for
their doctors to keep an eye on their
bone density.
The National Osteoporosis Risk
Assessment study, which followed
more than 200,000 post-menopausal
women in 13 U.S. states with no pre-
vious osteoporosis diagnosis, deter-
mined the bone-thinning disease is
“grossly underdiagnosed”, said trial
leader Dr. Ethel Siris, a Columbia
University professor.
Researchers found full-fledged os-
teoporosis in seven per cent of the
women and low bone density, a condi-
tion known as osteopenia, in another
40 per cent.
“The message to doctors is: when
you look around your waiting rooms
and make assumptions of who is at
risk for osteoporosis, you really have
no clue,” said Dr. Siris. “It’s a silent
disease and if you don’t look for it,
you’re not going to find it.”
She added bone mass should be
measured in all women over age 65
and in post-menopausal women who
have a family history of the disease or
who have had fractures.
Eleven per cent of the women in
the study had reported fractures after
45 and before the study began which
should have been a signal to their doc-
tors.
While the traditional method of
bone density scanning uses expensive
low-dose X-ray machines to measure
mass in the hip and spine, the study
used smaller, portable devices to mea-
sure density at the heel, forearm or
finger.
Dr. Siris said the study proves such
“peripheral” scanners, easily set up in
doctors’ offices, can provide “a low-
cost, quick test that serves as a screen-
ing and gives useful information”.
Results of the study, funded by
Merck and Co., which manufactures
the osteoporosis drug Fosamax, were
published in December in the Journal
of the American Medical Association.

AJAX –– Cold weather hasn’t kept anglers Michael McKean (left)
and Dave Langille from indulging their passion. They were fishing for
the big one along Duffins Creek.
Record year for residential sales in Durham
DURHAM —The real es-
tate market is continuing to
produce big numbers.
“The residential resale
housing market in Durham Re-
gion is shaping up to set a
record this year for the number
of sales and listings as well as
a higher average price over the
year 2000 stats,” said Brett
Puckrin, president of the
Durham Region Real Estate
Board (DRREB).
Even though the number of
sales was slightly down in No-
vember to 668 from 672 in Oc-
tober, they are up 20 per cent
from 557 in November 2000,
according to DRREB statis-
tics.
“The good news goes on,”
said Mr. Puckrin, noting the
average selling price in No-
vember was $194,167, the
highest in 10 years.
The average price is an in-
crease of almost two per cent
from $190,500 in October and
a further 4.1 per cent from
$186,483 in November 2000.
Durham Region is one of
the fastest moving markets in
the Greater Toronto Area, with
homes selling on average in 37
days and a 98 per cent list-to-
sale-price ratio, he added.

Eight local players lead ringette club
to Challenge Cup tournament win
DURHAM —Eight local players helped the Ontario Cen-
tral Region ‘AAA’ Stingers ringette team capture the gold
medal at the Southern Region AAA Challenge Cup Tourna-
ment recently.
Six ‘AAA’-calibre ringette teams, representing all of On-
tario’s ringette regions, competed at the
tournament held in Burlington, Hamilton,
Markham, Mississauga, Niagara Falls and
Thornhill.
The Stingers posted a 5-1 record at
the cup, defeating Southern 7-4, Western 6-
2, North West 10-3, North East 7-0, and Eastern 4-3. Central’s
lone loss was to Eastern 9-4.
Courtney Puddister of Pickering, who’s playing for the
Ajax belle ‘AA’squad this season, led Central Ontario with 21
points (six goals, 15 assists) at the tournament.
Previously, the Stingers earned silver at the first AAA tour-
nament of the season.
The Challenge Cup tournaments are in preparation for these
ringette teams participating in the 2002 Ontario Winter Games
hosted next March by Guelph. The ringette venue is in Cam-
bridge at the Hespeler Arena.
Players will be selected from these six teams to form Team
Ontario, which then competes against other provinces at the
2003 Canada Winter Games.
The Stingers’ roster includes Lindsey Blakey, Mary Faux
and Jennifer Ross from Ajax and Jenna Clements, Laura Hill,
Courtney Howell, Kelly McNabney and Puddister of Picker-
ing. Scott Blakey, of Ajax, serves as an assistant coach, while
Chris Ross, also of Ajax, serves as the team manager.

Captain Arathoon leads the
way as girls grab tourney title
DURHAM —The Durham West Light-
ning tyke select hockey team closed out 2001
with a decisive victory at the Mississauga
Girls’Hockey Tournament over the Christmas
holidays.
The tykes went undefeated in their four
games, outscoring the opposition by a wide
33-1 margin. The Lightning crushed Or-
angeville 14-0 in the final. Lindsay Macdon-
ald opened the scoring with what proved to be
the winning marker. A balanced attack took
over the rest of the way to the thorough victo-
ry.
Team captain Katlyn Arathoon led the
scoring parade with a four-goal game. Alexis
Kamakaras scored two, with singles to Krista
Harris, Kristi Riseley, Alyssa Boynton, Paige
Lewthwaite, Acey Maves, Laura Shadwick,
and Madeline Iozzi.
Durham West opened the tourney with a
narrow 2-1 win over Oakville. Goaltender
Devon Jarvis played a strong game to preserve
the win. Arathoon and Riseley scored.
The Lightning tykes blanked Brampton 6-
0 in Game 2. Boynton led the way with a hat
trick. Arathoon notched two goals, with a sin-
gle to Iozzi.
Next, Durham West clobbered the host
Mississauga team 11-0. The Lightning for-
ward line of Arathoon, Melissa Seeley and
Shadwick combined for 11 points. Maves,
Jennifer Sisson, Lewthwaite and Boynton
added single markers.
Harris, Jacquline Kope and Lewthwaite
earned shutouts during the course of the tour-
nament.
Ed Arathoon, Paul Harris and Mark Rise-

Planning for
Success
Where does time go? Ask a 13 year old
why they are rushing to finish a project, and
the answer may be that they were on the
phone with a friend or that hockey took up
several evenings that week. Students inter-
ests and obligations increase as they get older
making time management a critical factor for
success.
By taking responsibility for their learn-
ing and managing time, students can balance
both personal and academic activities. The
fundamental tool is a comprehensive agenda.
The keys to an effective agenda involve the
following:
1)Record recurring tasks and due dates
(i.e. every Thursday at 8:30 p.m. band prac-
tices, Journal every Friday).
2)Be detailed when logging homework
to include the subject and the requirements,
(i.e. Math questions 3 to 8, page 29) and do it
as soon as the work is assigned to reduce time
wasting later on.
3)Prioritize daily and weekly assign-
ments, by dividing large tasks into smaller
more manageable segments.
4)Plan for long-term projects by setting
interim goals to prevent "cramming" and
leave 3-5 days prior to the due date for edit-
ing.
5)Allot 20% more time than expected
for projects, to allow for unforeseen events
such as an unavailable resource at the library.
6)Schedule time for personal activities.
7)Schedule a designated homework
time.
8)Use a pencil, so changes can be made
easily.
9)Use a coloured pen for special events
or activities.
10)Highlight completed tasks.
Learning Bound Inc. (Formerly
Tutortime Learning Centres Inc.) has been
providing one on one supplemental educa-
tion programs in Durham Region since 1996.
Time management and study skills are incor-
porated into all our personalized programs,

Electric Fireplaces are taking
the spotlight in the fireplace indus-
try and you can see the latest mod-
els on display at Byrne Design’s
new showroom.
“You can now create the ambi-
ence of a genuine wood fire, with-
out the inconvenience,” says
Marilyn Talpash. “Electric fire-
places combine the realistic ember
glow and flickering random flame
image, without the mess or danger
of a real wood fire.”
The unit plugs in like a lamp,
operates for pennies a day, with or
without heat, requires no major con-
struction to your home, and is total-
ly portable. It can be moved from
room to room, or if you move to a
new home, you can take it with you.
Your investment is never lost.
To ensure your safety and total
peace of mind, no combustible ener-
gy sources are used to produce the
flame effect and no venting is
required for the fireplace.
They are 100% heat efficient!
They distribute a warm, gentle, even
heat over a wide area by means of a
silent fan-forced
heater. It will produce
about 5115 BTU of
total heat. All of the
energy supplied to
the unit is converted
into heat, which stays
in the room to keep
you warm. There is
no heat loss due to
venting.
“Electric fireplaces are
great for homes and condos,”
says Marilyn. They come in a
variety of sizes and can be cus-
tom made to fit any space.”
The new showroom is located
at 677 Marksbury Rd. in
Pickering. Store hours are Tues. to
Fri. 1 to 6 p.m.; Sat. 9:30 a.m. to 4
p.m. or by appointment. For more
information call (905) 420-0717.
