DURHAM —High school sports are another step
closer to a full return throughout Durham Region.
About 100 coaches gave their stamp of approval
Thursday to the return of Lake Ontario Secondary
Schools Athletics (LOSSA) — the governing body of
high school sports.
But there is one condition — Thursday’s meeting at
Whitby’s Sinclair Secondary School only created a
temporary executive to oversee operations until Sept.
28.
A full nine-member executive needs to be in place
by that date in order for LOSSA to move ahead for the
remainder of the year.
LOSSA suspended operations over a year ago in
the midst of labour unrest between the provincial gov-
ernment and high school teachers. High school athlet-
ics, in general, have been in disarray for the past three
years during the ongoing political upheaval.
But it appears high school students will be return-
ing to the fields and courts shortly.
“It sounds like things are starting up,” said Rob Dy-
ment, the Durham District School Board’s health and
physical education facilitator, who is helping co-ordi-
nate LOSSA’s return.
“We’re not out of the woods yet, we still need that
executive in place.”
The temporary executive was created in order to
notify the province’s governing body of high school
sports — the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic
Association — of Durham’s intention to send teams to
Ontario championships, Mr. Dyment said.
“Everyone is anxious and ready to go,” he said, not-
ing conveners have volunteered to operate the tradi-
tional fall sports of girls’ field hockey, girls’ basket-
ball, football, boys’ ‘AAA’ volleyball and cross-coun-
try. Conveners are still needed for ‘A’ and ‘AA’ boys’

Pickering taxpayers get their reports this month
First municipal
government performance
index due by the end
of September
BY MARTIN DERBYSHIRE
Staff Writer
PICKERING —Pickering’s mu-
nicipal report card will be ready for the
Province’s new Sept. 30 deadline, says
City staff.
“We’re working hard to try and meet
the deadline,” said Gil Paterson, Picker-
ing’s director of corporate services and
treasurer. “Taxpayers are going to get a
chance to see how their tax dollars are
spent.” The report cards, now required
by law, require municipalities to report
to local taxpayers on how efficiently and
effectively they deliver services in nine
major areas: water, sewage, garbage,
fire, policing, social, local government
land-use, planning and transportation.
Pickering is not submitting information
on policing or water services as it falls
under Regional jurisdiction.
The Province had originally set a
June 30 deadline for the report cards but
postponed the date when it seemed clear
many of Ontario’s municipalities would
not be able to meet it.
This is the first year the report cards
are being compiled and Mr. Paterson
warned against comparing Pickering’s
data to that of other municipalities,
which may have different priori-
ties.
“It is like comparing apples to
oranges,” he said. “It’s best to
wait a couple of years and com-
pare Pickering numbers to Pick-
ering numbers, year after year.”
Mr. Paterson said the detailed
information, financial statements
and performance indicators are
being compiled and will first go
to the audit committee and then
be sent to council for considera-
tion and approval within the next
month. In the past, Pickering has
made its financial statements
available through its parks and
recreation brochures, but Mr. Pa-
terson said that plan would now
be scrapped in favour of the re-
quired report card.
Caregivers can get creative this month
PICKERING —A ‘creative care-
givers seasonal solutions professional
development’ program is being held at
the Pickering central library this month.
The Sept. 26 program begins at 7
p.m. with seasonal ideas for day-care
providers to help keep children busy.
Call 905-831-6265 beginning Sept. 12.
Also, children aged three to seven are
invited to attend the ‘fall into fun’ pro-
gram to celebrate the arrival of autumn.
That program is Saturday, Sept. 29.

Durham looks
out for moraine
BY JACQUIE McINNES
Staff Writer
DURHAM —Durham
politicians had double vision
on the Oak Ridges Moraine
last week, when the regional
planning department re-
sponded to provincial recom-
mendations for protection of
the sensitive land.
At the same time, the
planners announced results
of their own public consulta-
tion on the moraine, a ridge
of sandy hills stretching 160
kilometres from the Trent
River in the east to the Nia-
gara Escarpment in the west.
The provincial recom-
mendations for the moraine,
which came from a provin-
cial panel set up to review the
moraine’s future, is an “ex-
cellent first step” said Alex
Georgieff, Durham’s director
of planning. However, the
Region does have some sug-
gestions based on the process
it has undertaken, in conjunc-
tion with the regions of Peel
and York, the director added.
The Durham planners’ con-
clusions were presented at a
committee meeting Aug. 28.
“Three years ago we iden-
tified a need for a higher
order of policy,” said Mr.
Georgieff, who noted at that
time the Province was invited
to participate in the study of
the moraine but declined.
During the regions’study, six
areas were identified as re-
quiring attention, including
formation of a land-use poli-
cy. There is a need for one
agency or governing body to
develop, maintain and moni-
tor a database on water use
across the moraine, said Mr.
Georgieff.
As well, he added, the re-
gions’ report recommends
the moraine be considered in
the broader context of growth
throughout southern Ontario.
Durham environmentalist
Linda Gasser told the plan-
ning committee the three re-
gions have “done an impres-
sive job and identified many
issues that must be dealt with
when evaluating protection
strategies for the Oak Ridges
Moraine”. However, Ms.
Gasser added, “The recom-
mendations for a regional
strategy... are premature and
incomplete,” and should be
delayed until the provincial
panel makes its final recom-
mendations and creates legis-
lation, expected to be passed
by mid-November.
The planning committee
recommendations are to be
presented to Durham council
for ratification on Sept. 12.

PICKERING —Transport
Canada began the public consulta-
tion process last week for its ‘green-
space project’ on the federally
owned Pickering lands.
Open houses were held at the
Claremont Community Centre on
Thursday and Saturday to discuss
the steps to protect, as green space,
the portion of the Oak Ridges
Moraine and areas around the
Rouge Park that were originally
designated for a future airport site.
A greenspace project team is ex-
ploring the future stewardship and
management of the lands and was in
Claremont seeking input from
stakeholders in the area.
“We’re here to listen,” said
David Washington, regional direc-
tor of programs for Transport Cana-
da. “We need the public’s feed-
back... this gives us the chance to
meet one on one, learn more about
our own interests and those of the
environmentalist groups, the neigh-
bours, the tenants and the experts.”
Transport Canada announced in
March that it will preserve approxi-
mately 2,251 hectares of the
moraine on the northern portion of
the lands and 800 hectares along the
western boundary for the purpose of
an alternate Rouge Park corridor.
Mr. Washington said it would be
premature to identify the different
options being considered for the
stewardship and added officials are
“looking at a blank slate”. He said a
decision is expected sometime this
winter.
Doug and Joyce Page, 36-year
residents of Green River, were at
Thursday’s open house.
The Pages had their home expro-
priated in 1972 as a part of the fed-
eral government’s plan to reserve
the land for a future airport and
have been renting the property ever
since.
They said they attended the open
house looking for clarification be-
cause so many rumours were flying
around about the future of their
home.
“They say they’ll give us three
months notice before they do any-
thing,” said Mr. Page, whose home
is not on property that is part of the
protected green space but is still on
federally owned lands. “We were
concerned, but it looks like we’re
going to be here for awhile.”

Only outright
pesticides ban
guarantees safety
To the editor:
Re: ‘Pickering ponders ban on pesticides,’
Aug. 29.
Many of us have long had great concerns
regarding the health effects of these chemi-
cals, particularly on our children. Recently,
the Ontario College of Family Physicians
sent a newsletter to doctors outlining these
health risks. According to the newsletter, re-
search data strongly suggests exposure to
common pesticides can be toxic to children,
affecting brain function and causing some
forms of cancer.
Only a complete ban is useful because
these pesticides are carried by the wind and
washed into the groundwater, ultimately af-
fecting the entire food chain and contami-
nating our drinking water.
We must eliminate these chemicals to the
greatest degree possible. We should en-
courage our council members to place an
immediate ban on these chemicals until the
industry proves they are safe. Waiting until
2004 is like allowing pharmaceutical com-
panies to market drugs to the public while
collecting data on their safety.

He’s been dead for more than 20 years, but Terry Fox’s
dream of beating cancer is more alive than ever.
The young Canadian who galvanized the nation with his
Marathon of Hope during the summer of 1980 has become a
lightning rod in the battle against the disease that results in
more premature deaths than anything else we face.
Cancer is never far from the front page. Just a few days ago
Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu, just 26 and in the
prime of his life, was diagnosed with cancer. Team Canada
captain and hockey legend Mario Lemieux has had his own
cancer battles and is himself a hero to those who’ve fought to
overcome the horrible disease.
But there was only one Terry Fox.
His legacy of running a marathon a day for months on end
woke this nation up. He raised about $12 million for cancer re-
search during his four-and-a-half month run that ended when
he was cruelly struck down by a return of cancer. Just nine
months later, in June 1981, he died. But that September, Cana-
dians rallied in his memory and now nearly 7,000 Terry Fox
runs take place across the globe each September. A whopping
$120 million has been raised for cancer research in the 20
years since.
This will be the 21st consecutive Terry Fox Run for many
organizers and participants. They’ve seen the cumulative ef-
fect produced by the dream of one brave young man who de-
cided he would do everything he could to change the world for
those who would follow in his footsteps. And follow they did.
The process of renewal begins again this coming Sunday,
Sept. 16. In all the major centres of Durham, Terry Fox run
participants will be hitting the pavement. Many of them will
be remembering loved ones who were struck down by the dis-
ease.
Others, who have had cancer and beaten it, will be trying to
create a cancer-free world. Everybody will have their own rea-
son to walk, run, roll or ride.
What will you do on Sept. 16? Will you take the time on
that late summer morning to participate in a Terry Fox event,
to make a pledge, to volunteer to help out? It is a chance to
make a difference, to truly matter.
It took a true Canadian hero to make us understand what
must be done.
Now it’s up to us.
Where will you
be next Sunday?
Sept. 16 is Terry Fox’s day – celebrate
his legacy by pitching in to beat cancer
I’m sure the folks in Walkerton
know the value of clean drinking
water. However, I wonder if they
would build a nuclear reactor there,
even if there was only the slimmest
chance it would affect their water
supply.
Last month City councillors in
Pickering voted to support Ontario
Power Generation’s (OPG) applica-
tion to allow the four ‘A’-side nu-
clear reactors to return to service.
Despite all the positive impacts a re-
turn to service may bring to the City,
it’s time now for a reminder of why
the plant was shut down in the first
place.
The reactors have been down
since 1997 following several fright-
ening incidents. In 1992, a reactor
leaked, resulting in a release of
2,300 trillion becquerels of radioac-
tive tritium into Lake Ontario. The
leak resulted in increased levels of
tritium in drinking water from Whit-
by to Burlington. Shockingly, On-
tario Hydro, the operator until after
the shutdown and subsequent cre-
ation of OPG, also failed to report
high levels of tritium in groundwater
around the site for 18 years follow-
ing its identification in 1979. The
shutdown coincided with Ontario
Hydro’s inability to meet a deadline
for a mandatory shutdown system
upgrade, a major component in
avoiding a nuclear disaster.
Yes, OPG says bringing the reac-
tor back online will create 1,000
temporary jobs and 1,145 permanent
jobs once it’s up and running. And,
the more than $3 million in taxes
paid by OPG to the City sounds
good. But, would anyone want to
trade safe drinking water for a few
jobs and a couple of bucks?
OPG has always maintained the
level of tritium in our water is safe,
well below any provincial standards,
and said the plant is, and always was,
safe. They say improvements to the
reactors would bring them up to
today’s standards by upgrading the
emergency shutdown systems, re-
placing parts of the heavy water sys-
tem will avoid leaks and improving
the air-handling systems will reduce
releases of radioactivity. On the out-
side of the reactor they will intro-
duce better spill protection and im-
plement systems to improve environ-
mental performance.
But, is all this enough to gain the
public’s confidence in nuclear
power? Once the plant is up and run-
ning, and if there’s another leak, will
we have to think twice about drink-
ing the tap water or washing a piece
of fruit?
A final decision on the restart is
expected to follow the last public
hearing in Ottawa on Oct. 3 and
OPG is hoping to begin restarting
the A-side reactors at the end of
March 2002.
Just wanted to make sure we
don’t forget the past or we may be
condemned to repeat it.
Let us not relive experiences of the past
With restart process under way, now’s the time to review why reactors were shut down

It’s often a
family tradition

DURHAM ––In days gone by, the
general store was the hub of the village,
where you’d pick up just about anything
you’d need, socialize and find out what
was happening in the community. Though
they’ve largely been replaced by conve-
nience stores, you’ll still find a few gener-
al stores scattered throughout Durham Re-
gion’s countryside. The following is a look
at some of those stores, where you’re re-
minded of the charm of yesteryear.
On a typical summer day at the Ashburn
General Store in north Whitby, chances are
you’ll find someone cooling off with an ice
cream cone on the covered porch. It could
be someone travelling through, or a local
who has just picked up their mail.
“It’s not a fast-paced store,” owner Pam
Palmer concedes. “I enjoy the laid-back,
country style.”
Still, it has its busy moments, especial-
ly lunch hour, when construction workers
in the area stop by for a sandwich, Cornish
pastie or slice of pizza. And there’s always
a pot of coffee brewing.
You’ll find lots of things you might need
in a pinch, from a can of soup, beans or
vegetables, to paper towels and snacks.
You can also pick up a few antiques and
giftware and find out about upcoming
events listed on the bulletin board.
Locals drop by every day or two to pick
up their mail “and have a little chat. It’s
nice to hear about your neighbours and
events that are going on in town,” says Ms.
Palmer proudly.
Built around 1850, the Ashburn General
Store was once the hub of the village,
where area farmers would pick up gro-
ceries, as well as farm supplies, coal and
coal oil.
“It was one of the stopping spots for
people selling cattle on their way to the
Port of Whitby,” says Ms. Palmer. “It was
a thriving community, with one or even
two hotels, a blacksmith shop and an ac-
countant.”
❑ ❑ ❑
In Tyrone, three generations have owned
Byam’s General Store, built in 1835 as a
hotel. It also once served as a post office,
but today offers many of the same things
you’d find in a convenience store, along
with some nuts and bolts and a few pieces
of a discontinued clothing line.
The biggest difference, of course, is its
rich heritage. Cliff Lionel Cyril Byam
took over ownership of the shop from his
father in the mid-1960s. His father had
been running the shop since returning
home from the First World War, following
the death of his own dad, who purchased
the building in 1894.
Photos from the old days decorate the
walls of the store, which still has what Mr.
Byam believes are the original hardwood
floors. He also has a receipt, possibly from
the 1930s, when the store purchased a loaf
of bread from a bakery in nearby Ponty-
pool for just 2 cents and sold it for double.
Though he doesn’t recognize as many
faces as he once did, Mr. Byam has warm
memories of the years he has spent there.
“I just kind of fell into it,” admits Mr.
Byam, who grew up in Tyrone and attend-
ed a two-room schoolhouse that is now an
apartment. “There was just one teacher,”
he recalls. “She was a sharp old bird. You
didn’t put too much over on her.”
❑ ❑ ❑
If you’re wondering where to have your
dog’s nails clipped or where to get a load
of topsoil, chances are you’ll find the an-
swer at Wanamaker’s General Store in
Seagrave, just north of Port Perry.
“Everyone knows they can come and ask
me for information on just about every-
thing in the area,” boasts Wayne Wana-
maker, who owns the store with his wife
Pam.
He recalls a visitor to the area who
stopped in for directions. He figured out
who she was looking for, let her know that
her dad had been out picking up materials
to build a deck, but should be home
preparing the barbecue for her visit by the
time she got there.
“You get to know people,” Mr. Wana-
maker explains.
Seagrave’s general store has been
through a few owners since it was built in
1872. An addition to the front, constructed
in 1903, still remains. The original store
was torn down by Mr. Wanamaker’s
grandparents in the 1960s to make room
for a better addition.
While Mr. Wanamaker recognizes the
struggles to survive today, he cherishes
the role of general stores in days gone by.
Pictures of the store in the 1930s, along
with old class pictures, barn raisings and
baseball teams, decorate the walls of the
store.
A focal point in the community for
many years, the general store even earned
its place in history in the cartoon ‘Birds-
eye Center’ by James Llewellyn Frise.
Surprisingly, Mr. Wanamaker occasionally
enjoys a visit from someone who remem-
bers the cartoon - which appeared in the
1930s in ‘Star Weekly’ - and recognizes
the store.
Who’s
minding the
general store?
Cliff Lionel Cyril Byam operates Byam’s General Store in Tyrone, which has been in the family for three generations,
since 1894.
Cliff Lionel Cyril Byam welcomes visitors to his Tyrone general store, built in 1835
as a hotel.

What would commitment mean in my life?
Why would it make a difference?
Until one is committed
there is hesitancy,
The chance to draw back, always
ineffectiveness,
Concerning all acts of initiative and
creation there is
One element of truth, the ignorance
of which kills
Countless ideas and splendid plans:
That the moment one definitely
commits oneself,
then Providence moves too.
All sorts of things occur to help one
That would never otherwise have
occurred.
A whole stream of events issue
from the decision,
Raising in one’s favour all manner
of unforeseen incidents
And meetings and material
assistance,
Which no man could have dreamed
would come his way.
Whatever you can do or dream you
can, begin it
Boldness has genius, power and
magic in it.
Goethe’s Faust
Sometimes it is difficult to find
the strength to look at our lives objec-
tively, because we know, deep inside,
that if we did we
would need to
make a change.
We are afraid,
what would hap-
pen? To us, to the
kids, to the job,
to.......at this point
we usually get so
overwhelmed
with anxiety, that
it seems safer to
stay unmoving,
hanging on and
surviving.
But in the
long run, is sur-
viving living? Or
can we learn to
trust Goethe’s
words that all
manner of
unforeseen inci-
dents, meeting
and material
assistance will
come our way
once we make the
commitment?
To learn to
trust these words,
we need a new
experience, one of
looking inside to
uncover our per-
sonal wisdom
and strength.
There is no better
way to unlock
your personal
genius, power
and magic than to
slow down, and
listen to yourself.
Yoga, Tai Chi and
Mediation all allow you a deeper understanding of your
life and its circumstances, these ancient disciplines give
you the support you need to reach the point of making a
commitment. This is the point from which opportunity
rises to unfathomed heights.
At Greenwood Holistic Health Care Centre our com-
mitment is to helping our clients reach their personal goals.

ical, mental, and life changes. Please call to find out about

Caution: Dentures Over Five Years Old
If you have been wearing the same
dental prosthesis for more then five
years without having it checked by
your denturist, you are running unnec-
essary risks. Too many people believe
that dentures are good for over 20
years. Nothing could be further from
the truth!
The removable prosthesis is made
of a hard, rigid material. Your face,
mouth and jaw, on the other hand,
change over the years. Because it can-
not adapt to these changes and because
artificial teeth wear down with time, a
prosthesis cannot do its job effectively
for more than about five years. This
reality can have devastating conse-
quences that are often invisible and
imperceptible to the wearer of a worn-
out denture.
Here is a short list of the most
harmful possible effects suffered by
wearers of prosthesis more than five
years old:
-softening of the tissues
-painful irritated tissues
-more labourious chewing and
difficult digestion
-headaches, earaches, neck pain
and joint problems
-sagging mouth, point chin and
prematurely old face
-accelerated resorption of the
bone
. . . and this is only a partial list!
Very few people maintain their
prosthesis properly. Some even
neglect to remove it for the night.
Don’t take chances with your health!
See your denturist annually.
When was the last time you saw
your denturist? Pickering Denture

Allergy or Sensitivity?
The U.S. Department of
Agriculture reports that 15% of the
total population suffers from both
immunologic and non-immunologic
reaction to foods. Of that, 1.5% experi-
ence true allergy, and the remaining
13.5% suffer from food sensitivities
(Konrad Kail, N.D. Allergy Free). The
definition between Sensitivity and
allergy is needed, as it is very misun-
derstood. Allergy is an antibody
mediated response, which is perma-
nent; an individual will always release
antibodies to an offending allergen,
which directly affects the immune sys-
tem. Allergies can be from combined
sources (environmental, foods, chemi-
cals . . .) but usually from one predom-
inant source. Sensitivities are a non-
antibody response; and may be related
to an individual’s ability to metabolize
and/or detoxify
substances.
Symptoms of sen-
sitivities such as
gas, belching,
headaches,
fatigues, diarrhea
and many other
bowl disorders
which can lead to
unfavorable condi-
tions of the body
such as weight
gain, may be suc-
cessfully overcome by sensitivity
testing to remove offending foods
from the diet, thus allowing the body
to self-heal. Karen Tazar does sensi-
tivity testing & counseling in the

shop to bring it back to its original con-
dition.
Three Bears Autobody is just such
a place. It’s has state-of-the-art equip-
ment and the highly experienced staff
who are trained to do all insurance
repairs for all insurance companies.
“We do everything with the cus-
tomer in mind,” says Kevin of Three
Bears. “We know how important their
vehicle is and that they want it to look
the way it did before the collision.
Available year round and with
convenient hours they do everything
from minor dents to major repairs.
At Three Bears they use only the
best quality UV protected urethane in a
two-stage painting system. They also
use a downdraft spray paint bake oven
so your car will look better than it did
when it rolled off the assembly line.
As always and summer and fall
are the best times to give new life to
your family car or even that sports car in
your driveway with a complete paint
job and bodywork.
“We want to exceed the cus-
tomer’s expectations and have them so
satisfied with the job we’ve done they’ll
tell their friends and family,” says
Kevin.
Right now Three Bears will pay
up to $200 towards your insurance
deductible on collision repairs.
“This is a perfect opportunity to
get your vehicle repaired ,” says Kevin.
“Another reason not to delay is our 90
day, no-interest, no-payment plan
OAC.”
Kevin always wants to remind
you that you should never be pressured
by a tow truck driver or insurance com-
pany into taking it somewhere you
don’t feel comfortable with.
"Insurance companies or tow
truck drivers may suggest preferred
shops giving the impression you have to
take it there," says Kevin of Three Bears
Autobody. "Well you don't. You can take
it wherever you want and all you need
to get is one estimate.”
More and more people are getting
that one estimate and get their collision
work done at Three Bears Autobody.

include a free shuttle service as well as
arranging a rental vehicle depending on
your insurance coverage. There is also a

Rookies fail to step up
in loss to Ajax Axemen
BY AL RIVETT
Sports Editor
PICKERING —With the pre-sea-
son almost concluded and the junior
hockey regular season set to begin later
this week, there’s an air of concern sur-
rounding the Pickering Boyer Pontiac
Panthers.
Panthers’ head coach Bill Purcell
admits he’s worried on several levels:
Veteran depth, goal scoring and raw
rookies who are not panning out as
first expected.
“We haven’t really had any young
kids who’ve stepped up right now.
None of them have really done that,”
says Purcell.
What confirmed Purcell’s assess-
ment was a lacklustre performance
against the Ajax Axemen in OHA On-
tario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey
League pre-season play at the Picker-
ing Recreation Complex Thursday
night. The Panthers were beaten 5-3 by
the same team they’ll open the South
Conference season against at the Pick-
ering Recreation Complex Wednesday
at 7:30 p.m.
The Panthers played the Port Hope
Predators in exhibition action at Port
Hope Saturday night. The result wasn’t
available at the News Advertiser’s
press deadline.
The Panthers rallied with a goal late
in the second period and another early
in the third period to tie the Axemen 3-
3. The Axemen, however, regrouped
and scored two unanswered goals later
in the final frame to sew up the win.
“We never played very well. Cer-
tainly, we didn’t play as well as we did
the night before,” says Purcell, eluding
to a 6-1 win in Port Hope over the
Predators of the league’s Eastern Con-
ference Wednesday night. “We should
have came back (Thursday against
Ajax) and played a better game. I was
not happy with the way we played.”
Of particular worry was his
charges’lack of finish around the net in
the Ajax game, explains Purcell.
“We had a number of scoring
chances and the kids couldn’t put the
puck in the ocean. When you have
eight or nine scoring chances in a
game, you should be burying them.”
The lone bright spot among the
rookies, says Purcell, has been the
work of first-year goaltender Scott
Gray, challenging incumbent Mike An-
dreoff for the number-one job with the
team.
While the defence will likely be the
club’s strongest suit with veteran rear-
guards Alex Greig, Alex Pavloski and
Kyle Aitken anchoring the blue line,
veteran leadership on offence is some-
thing the club is lacking. Only three
veteran forwards — Garett Winder,
Brent Chandler and John Buscema —
are returning from last year.
Sean Bradley, a defenceman turned
forward, scored two goals against Port
Hope. Single tallies went to Greig,
Ryan Taylor, Kevin Day and Brock
Brookwalter. No scoring information
was available for the Ajax contest.
The Panthers finish pre-season play
in Oshawa Tuesday night against the

PICKERING —The Pickering
Power ATT-Rogers/Dr. Raymond
Chan girls’ under-14 rep soccer team
couldn’t be beat at the recent New-
market Soccer Tournament.
With sheer hard work and determi-
nation, the Pickering girls marked five
games without a loss to secure the
championship at the two-day tourney.
Pickering defeated the North Mis-
sissauga Panthers 1-0 in the final, a
nerve-racking double-overtime affair
that ended in the final minutes of the
second extra frame. A perfect corner
kick by Jessie Draper led to a shot,
with Shannon Gesualdo converting the
rebound for the winner.
The semifinal contest against the
Bradford Selects was also a low-scor-
ing, hard-fought affair, with the Pick-
ering under-14s winning in a penalty
kick shootout after regulation time
ended in a scoreless draw. The first
round of penalty shots resulted in a 3-
3 tie, which set the stage for sudden-
death kicks. Ashley Woolstencroft
scored the winner.
In round-robin play, Pickering tied
North Mississauga 2-2, and Newmar-
ket 0-0 and beat Scarborough United
2-0 to advance to the semifinals.
Pickering goalkeeper Natasia
Szpak was voted the most valuable
player of the event.
Other team members are defence-
men Catherine Levesque, Danielle
Payne, Allison Fulton, Lauren Bach-
mann, and Amanda Welch, midfield-
ers Danielle Gesualdo, Vanessa
Robinson and Lauren MacFadyen, and
strikers Jennifer Adams, Kristy Mun-
sie, Nichole Blanco and Melissa Egan.
Absent were Jassie Hayer and Sheena
Yacoob.
Gene Gesualdo and AJ Hayer
coach the team.
