But the numbers also show they received less per-pupil money from the Province than most boards. The education ministry last Thursday released profiles of Ontario’s 72 district school boards, available at www.edu.gov.on.ca. Parents and the general public can see stu- dent-to-computer ratios, funding allocations, test results and other information. Education Minister Janet Ecker in a press release said the profiles “are one step toward en- suring that parents and the wider public have access to consistent and useful information about ed- ucation in Ontario.” She encouraged site visitors to use the feedback form to indi- cate what information they would like to see in the profiles. In the 1999/00 year, ministry statistics supplied by the boards show the Durham Catholic Dis- trict School Board spent 67.2 per cent of its operating money in the classroom, the third high- est percentage in the province. The Durham District School Board’s percentage was also among the highest in Ontario at 66.5 per cent. However the boards had less money than most with which to work. The average Ontario student received $6,687.26 from the Ed- ucation Ministry in the 1998/99 school year. But local public school students only received on average $5,776.49, while Durham Catholic students re- ceived $5,602.37. The following school year, the provincial aver- age dropped to $6,626.55, and Durham public school students received $10 more per student. However funding for Catholic school students dropped by just over $50, and only one other board in the province received less. The figures for the last two school years also show that both boards made great strides in im- proving student access to com- puters. In 1998/99, at the public board, there was one computer for every 7.32 high school stu- dents and one for every 10.92 el- See DURHAM page 2 RON PIETRONIRO/ News Advertiser photo Pitcher perfect PICKERING ––Pickering Selects squirts pitcher Maria Greco lets one go en route to pitching a perfect final inning in a recent match at Kins- men Park. The Region’s senior public health inspector says recreational water testing began later last year because testing facilities were over- whelmed by drinking water sam- ples in the wake of the Walkerton water tragedy, so results are diffi- cult to compare to this year. “It seems that there were more beaches posted last year, but there was a lot of rain last year, and that could have accounted for that,” he said. The fol- lowing year the numbers dropped to 5.65 and 7.12, re- spectively. In Catholic schools, the numbers were 12.19 and 10.58 respectively. The ratio for secondary stu- dents dropped by over half the following year to 5.66, and the elementary ratio fell to 6.89. David Visser, the Catholic board’s business superinten- dent, in an interview said over the last three school years “there was a significant emphasis to put more com- puters into the classroom”. He said the ministry for some time has said it would put such information online. But Mr. Visser noted some figures, such as enrolment numbers, are fairly straight- forward while others may re- quire some context. “I think there has to be an evolution process with regard to the provision of informa- tion,” he said. For example, the Web site also contains a “variance re- port”, showing how much money boards spent and how much money they received for various budget items. In the 1999/00 year, the Catholic board did not spend $11 million in available provincial funding ear- marked for school renova- tions and new pupil places, while the public board did not spend $7 million. The money is still available to the boards. BETTER LEARNING 2001 A Special section dedicated to educational institutions within your community. BETTER LEARNING 2001 To Advertise in Better Learning call Chris at (905) 683-5110 How soon is Too Soon? By R.N. Whitehead Ph.D. Many parents with chil- dren in Oxford Learning Centre’s Little Readers pro- gram wonder if 3 is too young for a child to be attending an organized learning program. My answer has not changed over the years; 3 is not too early for a child to start learning. I remind parents that their children have actually been involved in a very formal learning experience from the time they became conscious as infants. Oxford’s Little Readers program is designed to allow children to further investi- gate their universe, leading them toward greater under- standing by helping them to develop new thinking and exploring skills. Ultimately that extends to teaching them skills such as reading, math, a second language, music, movement and so on. It can only be a positive experience for a young child. John Holt, an education researcher and author for more than 20 years says that the difference between good teaching and poor teaching is the difference between being responsive and being intru- sive. With this in mind, we designed our Little Readers program by applying the concepts of cognitive devel- opment and interactive coaching. By giving kids the tools of discovery; showing them how to use them but not forcing them to do so; by respecting the learning speed and style of each individual, we are able to work individ- ually with each child. That’s the meaning of interactive coaching, interacting only when appropriate, offering clues that the child can use to move to higher or deeper understanding. We never tell or demand passive memoriza- tion! We know that before kids can memorize math rules, they need to under- stand larger and more basic concepts such as counting, greater than/less than or added to/taken from. Before numbers and rules can mean anything, a child must know what those abstract concepts are used for and why. Our program affects cognitive development. By respecting how the mind learns and by using methods that help kids develop a greater facility with this process, we actual- ly help them learn how to learn. Ron Christie, chairman of the Rouge Park Alliance, said the 14- member advisory panel also sug- gested ways the recommended protection strategy could be im- plemented. He also confirmed the panel did discuss a possible way to create protected links and corridors across the 160-kilome- tres moraine. Mr. Christie said the panel, made up of environmental, mu- nicipal and academic representa- tives, as well as members of the development and resource indus- try, reached consensus “on all but one or two issues” during the seven sessions held in July. “It worked really well,” Mr. Christie said of the group. “I think everyone approached the thing in a positive way.” Mr. Christie’s comments were echoed by several members of the panel, including Durham Re- gion Chairman Roger Anderson. “I was very worried about the agendas of some of the folks (going in), but when the process was over I was very pleased with the participation of everyone in- volved,” Mr. Anderson said. Mr. Anderson said he believes the recommended protection strategy “gives direction to the Ontario Municipal Board and everybody else for that matter, including staff”. The protection strategy uti- lized existing scientific data about the moraine, Mr. Anderson said. “We only had a short time so we didn’t go out and hire sci- entists. I think we had enough in- formation in front of us.” Jack Wilkinson, president of the Ontario Federation of Agri- culture and a member of the stakeholders’ group, said Tues- day the panel hoped to designate significant areas that needed pro- tection, including heritage forests and areas of wetland recharge. The struggle for the panel was in finding a way to create links between those significant areas, he said. Easements, a method by which a landowner agrees not to develop certain portions of his property, are limited in their ef- fectiveness because the only fi- nancial incentive for the owner to donate an easement is property tax relief, Mr. Wilkinson said. He said the panel would pos- sibly recommend the Province set up a land trust fund to com- pensate landowners whose prop- erty the protected corridor might run through. More extensive fed- eral and provincial tax-relief schemes could also be used, he suggested. Though the new strategy would affect those hoping to de- velop portions of the moraine in the future, existing operations such as sand and gravel pits and farms would not be affected, said Denis Schmiegelow, president of Scarborough’s Highland Creek Sand and Gravel and a past chair- man of the Aggregate Producers Association of Ontario. “The policy statement basi- cally refers to new operations,” he said. However, he said aggregate operations working in areas the panel designated as environmen- tally significant or in the “prima- ry natural corridor” would have to rehabilitate the pit to a natural state, or an agricultural state if farming is the main activity near- by. Mr. Schmiegelow added the Ministry of Natural Resources took a broad eye to what would make up the “core areas”. He said the MNR included every classification of wetland. “I think the system’s in place to satisfy the concerns that have come out of the (OMB hearings in Richmond Hill),” said Dick O’Brien, chairman of the Toron- to and Region Conservation Au- thority. He added the group in- cluded recommendations on how to enforce the protection strategy. Mr. O’Brien, a former Etobi- coke councillor who has been critical of the OMB in the past, said he does not believe develop- ers and land speculators would be overly hurt by the protection strategy. “The moraine is 195,000 hectares,” he explained. “The de- velopers have bought some of it, but they sure haven’t bought all of it.” The advisory panel, which was set up by Mr. Hodgson on June 28, wrapped up its meetings on Tuesday afternoon following two final day-long sessions at Durham Region headquarters in Whitby. A summary of the group’s recommendations is being prepared and will be given to Mr. Hodgson. A/P PAGE 4 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 5, 2001 Rise in violent attacks prompts police warning BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer DURHAM —Lock your doors when driving. Walk on well-lit routes. Walk quickly. Those are just a few crime-preven- tion tips contained in a safety bulletin is- sued Friday by Durham Regional Police in the wake of an increase this summer in random, violent gang attacks and “crimes of opportunity”. In the Ajax-Pickering area in particu- lar, police have seen a “steady increase of complaints of violent group attacks”, usually street robberies in which young people are targeted, police spokesman Sergeant Paul Malik said. In several of the attacks groups of as- sailants have been armed with weapons such as guns and knives and in recent as- saults in Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa and Whitby, the victims have been slashed, stabbed or badly beaten. In Whitby there has been an increase in “crimes of op- portunity” such as residential burglary, Sgt. Malik said, noting for example thefts from an open garage occurring while the homeowner is working in their backyard or garden. To help avoid being a victim of a vi- olent group attack and other crimes Sgt. Malik suggests people practise the fol- lowing “personal safety strategies”: • Walk on well-lit routes or sidewalks close to the road and avoid areas where someone can hide; • Walk quickly, know your route and walk around a group of people, not through them; • Lock your car doors even when dri- ving; • Protect your personal bank card numbers by not writing them down and covering your hands when using termi- nals in stores; • Keep garage doors locked at all times when not within sight; and • Report any criminal activity as it happens by calling 911. Mr. Mattes expressed some sur- prise that most beaches are still open considering the recent period of high temperatures, since warmer water results in better breeding con- ditions for bacteria. But he also noted this year’s beach postings don’t seem to be fol- lowing any kind of pattern. I t’s been a summer of two beach- es closed one week, then three, then nine beaches listed as unsafe for swimming, then down to four or five. As of Friday, Aug. 3, five Durham beaches were posted as being unsafe for swimming. One of them is Elgin Pond in Uxbridge, but the small body of water has been drained for construction work, and the posting doesn’t refer to the water quality. Historically, however, some swimming areas are generally poor- er compared to others, though re- sults vary from year to year. “Rotary Park in Ajax seems to be fairly bad, it’s been posted since the end of June,” said Mr. Mattes. The beach was posted 63 days last summer, and 49 days in 1999; in both cases the most of any of the Region’s beaches. At the other end of the scale, Bowmanville Beach West and Thorah Centennial had spotless records in 1999, while they were posted for 14 days and seven days, respectively, last summer. Overall, the 16 beaches were posted for 301 days last summer and 315 days in 1999. Mr. Mattes said the word ‘post- ed’ is used deliberately to indicate the Durham Region Health Depart- ment is advising swimmers not to go in the water. To close a beach implies erecting a physical barrier and preventing swimmers from using it. But while the signs are posted in noticeable places on the beach, health inspectors find people gener- ally don’t heed the warning, think- ing they know best. “Most people who we speak with don’t listen to what we have to say,” he said. “People will make up their own minds.” The Region takes weekly water samples at the beaches and sends the water to be tested at a provincial health ministry lab in Peterborough. When there are more than 100 E. coli bacteria per 100 millilitres of water, the beach is posted. Ignoring a posting could put a swimmer at risk; especially young- sters who tend to spend more time in the water and whose immune sys- tems are less able to fight off infec- tion. The type of exposure is also a factor. “If you put your head under the water, the probability increases dra- matically that you could become ill,” said Mr. Mattes. Ear, nose and throat infections and, in some cases skin rashes, could be the result of exposure to contaminated water. Durham residents can get week- ly beach reports, posted on Fridays, on the Region’s Web site, www.re- gion.durham.on.ca, by clicking on Durham beaches report. SWIMMERS from page 1 ADVERTISING FEATURE See The Next Better Health on Sun August 12 Although dubbed the #1 occupational haz- ard of the 90’s, carpal tunnel syndrome is not just being seen in the workplace anymore. Composed of the carpal bones, the wrist forms a tunnel-like structure in which ten- dons and the median nerve travel. Typical symptoms of the syn- drome include pain, numbness and tingling sensations in the hand predominantly the thumb, index and mid- dle finger. A burning or aching sensation in the hands and forearm com- monly awakens the per- son at night. The symptoms result from compression of the median nerve. The actual causes are many but the end result is the same ñ reduced cross-sectional diameter of the carpal tunnel and/or increased vol- ume of the contents of the tunnel. Carpal tunnel syn- drome usually develops in your dominant hand but may be seen in both. The syndrome occurs more often in women with an average age of onset of 30-50 years. Activities that may aggravate the condition include anything that causes repetitive bend- ing of the wrist such as sewing, typing in an improper position, using hand and/or vibratory tools. Musicians, office and assembly line work- ers are often affected due to the nature of their work. However, sys- temic causes such as pregnancy, diabetes, hypothyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis can also be a factor. Traditional medical treatment includes the use of wrist splints, non- steroidal anti-inflamma- tory drugs (NSAIDS), cortisone injections, soft tissue work and surgery in which the transverse carpal ligament (flexor retinaculum) is released. Chiropractic care along with modification or cessation of the aggravating mechanism can be quite effective. The chiropractic approach involves adjusting the spine, as well as, the bones of the forearm and the wrist that form the carpal tunnel. The relationship between spinal health and carpal tunnel has been documented by a num- ber of individuals who have found spinal nerve root irritation in patients who had carpal tun- nel or ulnar neuropathy. Have you ever seen a motorist accelerate when approaching a stop sign or is it only traffic lights that have this af- fect on drivers? Are the majority of pedestrians injured while walking on sidewalks or when walk- ing on the roads? New traffic lights keep appearing on our streets but the only time you will see new sidewalks is when new homes are built (and sometimes not even then). At Stroud’s Lane and Fairport Road new traffic lights have been installed but there are no sidewalks on either side of Stroud’s. There are many other examples. As you drive or walk on Pickering streets have a look at, or, better still, record every traffic light that leads a pedestrian into a ditch, grassy area or someplace else that forces them to walk on the roads. Editorial &OPINIONS PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER AUGUST 5, 2001 For as long as they’ve been pro- ducing cars, people have bickered about the price of gas. Now that gas is back down in the 58-cents-a-litre range — and it may drop further yet — people are less in- clined to whine about its cost. When it was pushing 80 cents a litre, all you heard about was how expensive it was and why couldn’t the government do something about the oil companies and ‘predatory’pricing. Truth is, fuel, as one of the most highly valued and necessary com- modities around the globe will always be subject to an incredible number of market factors. Forget those old-timers who talk glowingly about how cheap gas was in the good old days. Because of nu- merous forces, almost all of which are beyond the control of our federal and provincial governments, gas prices have always gone up and down. Whether it’s the Great Depression, or fuel rationing because of the First and Second World Wars, or any other number of conflicts, cartels and new discoveries, the price of oil is fluid and always will be. While researching a newspaper history project a number of years ago, I happened on a 1962 edition that touched on Israeli-Palestinian conflict (surprise, surprise) and also included a front-page story about the controversy over gas prices. This 39-year-old arti- cle stated there were Members of Par- liament who demanded a Royal Com- mission on gas prices. Obviously, it couldn’t have amounted to much. Every few years since then, an out- cry has arisen over pump prices. Why can’t the government control the cost of gas? The only real opportunity for federal and provincial governments to control prices comes from a reduction in the taxes both levels take on each litre of gas or by getting directly into the oil business and controlling the supply produced in Canada. Both goals are naive, if not down- right destructive to our national econ- omy. Gas and oil production is best done by private industry. Govern- ments get their cut through taxation and the taxes derived at the pumps are used for all manner of government services. The problem with oil is the vast amount of it is produced in Arab na- tions, Russia,Venezuela and the Unit- ed States. This world production re- sults in barrel prices that cannot be and should not be decided in Canada. Refineries and major oil producers certainly make a profit on oil produc- tion — they’d be out of business if they didn’t — but they’ve proved time and again that it’s a small percentage of the total price we pay. Oil, they don’t call it black gold for nothing, is desperately needed. Ex- pect to continue paying dearly for its use. LETTERS POLICY All letters should be typed or neatly hand-written, 150 words. Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com What goes up, must come down and go back up History shows numerous market factors have always conspired to raise complaints about gas prices Ahh, summer... It’s a time of more leisurely pursuits: Picnics in the park, friendly soccer and baseball games, camping, a day at the beach. For those of us in Durham, however, the number of public beaches where you can actually go in the water without run- ning the risk of contracting a nasty bacterial infection is an open question. Durham Region officials regularly test water for E. coli con- tamination and although one official there says the summer of 2001 has seen “fairly good” conditions, there are still a num- ber being posted as unsafe for swimming. But that’s no comfort to the people in Ajax, for instance, who have endured Rotary Park Beach being closed since June because of high coliform counts in the water. Other swimming locations in Durham have seen similar postings on a regular basis. There are some beaches that seem to escape the high counts — for various reasons — but they too have shown on occasion that it’s simply not safe all the time. And there’s the rub. The footprints we leave on land, it turns out, also leave consequences for us in the water. Rainfall run- off from properties across Durham Region carries contami- nants we produce into the tributaries that feed our lakes. And Mother Nature’s contribution — either through rainfall or summer heat — helps provide fertile ground for bacteria in the water to multiply. Such is the price we pay for “progress”. However, the Re- gion does post the beaches as being unsafe for swimming for a reason. Durham residents risk infection by swimming in Lake On- tario or Lake Scugog when the coliform counts are unaccept- ably high. If you ignore the postings at area beaches, or if you are simply unaware, you swim at your own peril. Durham officials can act in instances where they know of a specific source of water contamination but beyond that, we all shoulder some of the responsibility for the quality of the water in our lakes. Years of complacency and neglect have led us to a situation where a beach being open for swimmers is sometimes the ex- ception instead of the rule. You can still swim, but you could be taking a risk if you do. Inform yourself, take precautions and if you notice a sign post- ed at your favourite beach, don’t go jump in the lake. Don’t be so quick to go jump in the lake We all must shoulder some responsibility for making our lakes safe once again Tim Kelly Staff Editor shouston@durhamregion.com No purchase necessary. Check us out online at www.durhamregion.com Jack Syme earns honours as Ajax senior of the year AJAX —Jack Syme may be a vol- unteer, but he’s putting in full-time hours. Mr. Syme was recently named the Ajax senior of the year in programs sponsored by the federal and provincial governments. For the past 10 years, he’s been the president of the Ajax Seniors’ Friend- ship Club. He joked about being a vol- unteer, saying, “Once you’re in, you can’t get out.” Not that he wants to. “I enjoy doing things like that. Ever since we came to Ajax, I’ve been mixed up in something,” he said. The Symes, Jack and wife Ethel, came to Ajax 32 years ago. They have two children and three grandchildren. Most of his involvement has been in sports, especially minor hockey, which he calls his “main thing. I convened, managed, coached and was president.” He also was involved in transit mat- ters, the hospital bed campaign and fund-raising bingos. Mr. Syme was one of the founders of the Saints Athletic Club, which provided activities for youths too old for minor sports. “We took kids on a lot of trips to Quebec and Lake Placid.” Being a volunteer is im- portant, Mr. Syme noted. “Very, very so. A lot of things can’t function without volunteers. Take a look at our hospital and schools. They couldn’t survive with- out volunteers. Nothing would survive.” With the Ajax seniors’ club, Mr. Syme “oversees everything”, including the day-to-day operations. “I’m a handyman. Anything that has to be done, that’s me,” he said. Mr. Syme helps co-ordinate overnight trips, parties and functions that the club organizes. “The seniors is a full-time job,” he added, noting he’s often at the Exeter Road club every day. “It’s a 60- to 65-hour week. I’m there every day,” Mr. Syme said. While he does take the odd va- cation, “I don’t take too much time off. I enjoy doing this. I set my own hours,” he said. “Our club is unique. It’s strictly run by volunteers. There’s not capital outlay at all,” he said. “The Town gives us a building and one man, Ernie Brown. Without him, we couldn’t run the club at all.” A/P PAGE 10 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 5, 2001 This volunteer a Jack of all trades Fax it: 905-683-7363 Ajax’s Jack Syme proudly displays the medal he was given for volunteering. 1645 Pickering Parkway Pickering, Ontario (905) 426-6603 We offer comfortable independent living with care to meet your needs • 24 Hour Supervision • Full Housekeeping & Laundry • Elegant lounge with fireplace • Permanent & short term Accommodation • Private Suites • Comfortable Dining SUITES STILL AVAILABLE CALL TO-DAY FOR TOUR and JOIN us for a complimentary meal. Elder abuse is prevalent, but secret BY CRYSTAL CRIMI Staff Writer DURHAM —She is sitting at the table, head down with shame as she sips her tea. Her hands are shaking as she moves a strand of grey hair away from her face, and then, her hurtful story of abuse spills out like tea from her cup. She is a widow who has given power of attorney to her son-in-law only to watch everything she had left disap- pear; she is a mother who’s son has punched her in the mouth; and she is the mother of a daughter who has just tricked her into signing her house away. Although this particular story may not be true, these types of situations are a reality for many senior citizens. Joan Hill, 80, is with the Os- hawa Seniors Citizen Centres speakers’ bureau. She puts on skits at local senior homes and schools to help promote aware- ness of elder abuse and when she speaks, the room is quiet enough to hear a pin drop. “They’re actu- ally seeing an old lady suffering,” said Mrs. Hill, explaining why she doesn’t sim- ply lecture on the subject. She said after she has done a skit, peo- ple are some- times crying. “People don’t want to admit their children would do that.” Elder abuse can be physical, sexual, financial, psychological and verbal... and appear in many shapes and forms. But it is the one thing most seniors won’t talk about. For nine years, 79-year- old Jean Hunt has been on the OSCC’s elder abuse committee. The OSCC speaks to youths in schools and Mrs. Hunt said that’s a step in the direction of prevention be- cause people must be taught respect for se- niors before it’s too late. “What I found out over the years is there are a great number of seniors in need of help and one of the things I think is sad is seniors don’t talk about it,” said Mrs. Hunt. “They may confide in a friend about what’s happening to them, but they won’t do it officially.” Because it is so embarrass- ing for an elder and isn’t re- ported often, there are no statis- tics on how many seniors are abused or what type is most common. She said in many cases she has heard about, the son or daughter has moved in with his or her widowed parent or vice versa. Things don’t work out and the senior’s house is gone. “There’s very few human beings who wouldn’t say my son or daughter’s completely trustworthy when it comes to power of attorney,” she said. People must be careful when signing over power of at- torney, said George Monticon, a lawyer for ‘Advocacy Centre for the Elderly’, which special- izes in elder abuse issues and raises public awareness on it. “When people sign over the power of attorney, they’re sign- ing away the right for people to step into their shoes and do things only you could do,” he said. Reasons people sign over power of attorney can be acci- dental, or because they are afraid they are or will be, un- able to make logical decisions with their money. He warns se- niors to be careful of whom they trust. “All of these things (types of abuse) are not reported because they’re done by a family mem- ber or ‘close friend’ and they are embarrassed... they don’t want to get their kids in trou- ble.” He said sometimes people abuse their elders because of a history of a bad relationship with them, the parent may have a severe condition which re- quires a lot of time and atten- tion and the child just snaps, or because the opportunity is sim- ply there. The Durham Community Legal Clinic has one legal aid lawyer who makes appearances at regional seniors’ centres to discuss the rights of the elderly. If an elder is being abused, he or she has to tell the police, who will refer a senior to someone who can help them, such as the Seniors Coalition Against Elder Abuse. The coalition is an umbrella group that brings together vari- ous seniors’groups working to- ward helping abused elders. “Elder abuse is common... it’s something we want to put an end to,” said Cathy Jordan, a member of the coalition. “We just call it ‘the silent crying’be- cause it’s one of the hardest things for people to admit to and for people to come forth about. We’re just trying to put an end to it and hopefully when we get this committee in place (in September), people when they phone, we’ll be able to give them information and so forth.” Although many groups work on helping abused elders, there isn’t much they can do in terms of prevention as they find many seniors won’t talk about it. One breakthrough in preven- tion is home-care workers now must report and record any- thing they notice that seems unusual about a client. Abused seniors in need of help can call Durham Regional Police victim support unit at 905-579-1520, the 24-hours Distress Centre at 905-433- 1121 or 1-800-452-0688, Durham Community Legal Clinic at 905-728-7321, or Mo- bile Crisis Unit at 1-800-742- 1890. The Federal Government has reduced the rate of capital gains tax on appreciated listed securities when they are donated to charity. This results in two benefits: A saving on tax payable for capital gains and a reduction of income tax because of the donation receipt you receive for the fair market value of the security. This may be a good time to review your investment portfolio with your financial advisor and consider a gift of Securities. You will be helping The Salvation Army work in your community while taking advantage of tax benefits. I could hardly believe what I saw. The photo showed a stubby, obese, woman weighing 200 pounds. Now she was a professional jockey! How she accomplished this huge remodelling of her physique is the first rule to losing weight. • 1 - The Big ‘M,’ Motivation. This patient had a life-long ambi- tion to be a jockey. And there are no 200-pound jockeys. By sheer determination she fought off ex- cess pounds with her goal always in sight. Without a huge dose of big ‘M’ no one ever wins the bat- tle of the bulge. • 2 - Take off your clothes and take a good, prolonged look at yourself in the mirror. You must feel an intense revulsion of what you see. If that’s not the case there’s no point in reading on. • 3 - Buy a scale. It’s the most important instrument in the world to fight disease. A few days ago I advised an obese patient to pur- chase one. Her remark, “They’re not very accurate!” More to the point, she could not face the truth. It’s the old story of the os- trich burying his head in the sand. Step on the scale every day. Even if you don’t lose weight it will at least prevent surprise, and the ex- clamation, “Oh I didn’t realize I’d gained 30 pounds!” • 4 - Stop living in the land of Disney. Patients frequently swear to me they don’t eat anything but in some miraculous way still gain weight. This is when I remind them of the horrors of the Nazi concentra- tion camps. And that I’ve never seen any obese victims of these camps. We all know what hap- pened there. Prisoners received fewer calo- ries than they burned up. This comment usually ends patients phoney theory about weight loss. I’m not suggesting they be incar- cerated this way. But one could make a good case for this. Placing obese peo- ple in regulated quarters might do more for the health of this nation than much of the medicine they consume. • 5 - Forget about using the lat- est gimmicky diet. There are no magical diets that make it easy. Diets and best-selling books sim- ply make authors rich. • 6 - Don’t try to interpret complicated food labels. Most people would need to shop with a dietitian to understand the signif- icance of food labels. Rather, get smart about food choices. Unless you’ve been living on Mars you know that fancy desserts are loaded with calories. So are packaged foods. Start the day with high-fibre cereals, not a fat-laden bran muf- fin. Substitute skim milk for whole milk. Consume more fruits and veg- etables. And stop munching snacks while watching TV. • 7 - Don’t be fooled by ‘low- fat foods.’ They do contain less fat. But there’s a catch. When food manufacturers remove tasty fat they all too often replace it with sugar. The end result may be an even greater number of calo- ries. You need eyes in the back of your head when buying prepack- aged foods. • 8 - Exercise. But don’t spend hundreds of dollars to join a club you use for two weeks and then forget its address. Start using the two best pieces of equipment that are free. Your legs. Day after day I’m amazed at the people who ride a few blocks on a bus rather than walk 10 min- utes to their downtown offices. They get off the bus and use an escalator rather than walk up 25 steps. Then they sit at a desk all day and wonder why they feel tired and sluggish. It doesn’t matter what way you exercise. What’s food for one person is poison for another. But find something you enjoy. I’ve never seen a happy-looking jogger. They all appear as if they’ve lost their best friend or just been told they have cancer. Rather, find a sport that makes you happy. Maybe hiking, bicycling or ballroom dancing. Anything that gets you moving. • 9 - Realize obesity is not only a cosmetic problem. Obesity kills more people than any other disease. And since half of North Amer- icans are now obese, extra pounds become the shovel that’s digging their graves. Diabetes, heart at- tack and stroke are only a few of the major problems related to obesity. • 10 - One good way to get mobile is to turn off the computer and the TV. They will wait for you. Do this and many pounds will slowly melt away. And keep my friend the 100-pound jockey in mind. The Gifford-Jones weight loss program The Doctor Game W. My concerns are with the financial atmosphere. Other than a small downward glitch in short term rates, there has been no downward movement in long term rates (actually rates are slightly higher than they were seven months ago) since prime started to drop six months ago. Yes, we are getting shafted, (welcome to the Canadian Financial system) and this will not change, primarily due to the Financial Institutions’ monopoly on the money market. It has been quite scary to see the number of job losses over the past few months, and do not expect any change in this pattern. The stock market has been getting killed, and the dollar has been on a gradual slide for the past six months. ACTUALLY SOME GOOD NEWS If you already own a home, you will be pleased with the fact that prices are still rising at a reason- able pace, with no slow down in the immediate future. CONSOLIDATE, CONSOLIDATE, CONSOLIDATE With property values having increased substantially over the past two years, most people have built up equity that they might not be aware of. As long as your credit is reasonably good, financing is available up to 100% of current value. This can equate to huge savings in monthly payments, and then correct the prob- lem down the road, your account will still show a late payment history. The old phrase “don’t fix it, if it ain’t broke” certainly does not apply to your credit history report. WHY CENTRAL FUNDING GROUP? Fast PROFESSIONAL service, with your best interest being our primary goal. The best rates avail- able in the marketplace. Mortgage financing to 100% of value. Private funds are always available at compet- itive rates and terms. Consolidations have always been a speciality. Till next time Glenn A. Locals go to bat at nationals Burgess, Peacock test their talents in Brampton PICKERING —Laura Burgess and Hilary Peacock are soaring with the Whitby Eagles this weekend at the Canadian Bantam Girls’ Fastball Championships. The team is the Ontario entry at the championships in Brampton, for girls 15 and 16 years old. Action wraps up today (Sunday) and Whitby got off to a fast start, thumping Nova Scotia 12-0 in its first game Wednesday. Laura has been playing for the Eagles all season, while Hilary was a call-up for the championships. The starting catcher for the Eagles, Laura expects the team to finish near the top at the nationals, al- though she added, “We haven’t seen a lot of the competition yet.” Hilary, a third-baseman with the Chinguacousy Cougars, said, “I think we’re going to place in the top four, for sure.” This is Hilary’s first sea- son with Chinguacousy, playing for them because “they were looking for players and I was interest- ed.” Laura is in her first sea- son with Whitby. “The Pickering team Hi- lary and I played for last year split up because of coaching differences and not enough pitching. So we went our own way,” Hilary said. “Whitby called for a tryout and I made it.” The 16-year-old Picker- ing residents have been playing fastball for 10 years. They are also hoping to land scholarships with U.S. colleges when they finish high school. “I’m trying. I’ll have to get my marks up,” Laura said. Ajax peewees win with Spartan pitching, defence AJAX —For the fourth time this year, the Ajax Spartans minor peewee baseball team came away with a vic- tory over its Pickering counterpart. The final regular season meeting between the clubs, held at the McLean Community Centre in Ajax, came down to the bottom of the seventh in- ning. A single by John Harrington cashed in Preston Rauh-Wasmund from third to give Ajax a 2-1 win. The game was the best-played en- counter between the teams this year; a pitching duel that came down to solid defence and timely hitting. Pickering opened the scoring in the top of the second inning following a leadoff single to left off Rauh-Was- mund. The runner advanced along the base path and in an attempt to catch him at third, the throw was high and the first run crossed the plate. In the fourth, Jason Jacobs led off with a grounder that handcuffed the infield and Tristan Beadle drew a walk. When Beadle drew a throw to first, Jacobs took off for third. A sacrifice fly from Jake Stevens scored Jacobs to tie the game at 1-1. Not only did Rauh-Wasmund score the winning run, but he also pitched five innings of two-hit ball that in- cluded four strikeouts. Steven Cope provided hitless relief and struck out two to keep the Pickering attack at bay. Also turning in sold defensive plays were right-fielder Kevin Jenk- ins, catcher Christopher Harrington, shortstop Blair Cope, left-fielder Ryan Singh and Beadle, the first baseman.
