Rajiev was out with Big Broth- er Ken Booker. It’s official: Feds protect Rouge lands Pickering hails decision by Liberal government BY SUSAN O’NEILL Staff Writer PICKERING —More than 2,000 hectares of the Oak Ridges Moraine located on the northern portion of the airport lands in Pickering will be protected as green space, Transport Minister David Collenette announced Fri- day. “Over the next 12 months we will work with the community, en- vironmental groups and other fed- eral and provincial agencies to en- sure that this portion of the Oak Ridges Moraine and a corridor along the Rouge River on the Pick- ering lands are protected in perpe- tuity as green space,” the minister announced at the Whitchurch- Stouffville Museum. “The federal government is committed to doing our part in safeguarding these en- vironmentally sensitive areas.” Transport Canada will preserve approximately 2,251 hectares of the Pickering lands and another 800 hectares along the western boundary for the purpose of an al- ternate Rouge Park corridor. According to a news release, “this landmark action of the gov- ernment of Canada is possible be- cause it has been determined that any future airport on the Pickering lands site would be a regional re- liever airport and not a full-sized international airport as envisioned 30 years ago.” Mr. Collenette noted, “It is our intention to set up a consultative group to fully explore the issues regarding the transfer, stewardship and management of the properties, including the option of establish- ing a trust.” Police Services Board in spotlight Durham wants quarterly crime stats BY SUSAN O’NEILL Staff Writer Future reports to Durham council from the Region’s repre- sentatives on the Durham Re- gional Police Services Board (PSB) should include statistical information highlighting criminal activity in municipalities across Durham, says the mayor of Ajax. Steve Parish suggested Wednesday it would be useful for councillors to have crime statis- tics on the various communities the next time Oshawa Councillor Bob Boychyn and Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt provide the Region with an update on the board and policing in Durham. Councillors voted in January to require the two Regional rep- resentatives on the PSB to report to council four times a year in an effort to increase communication between the two groups. The first presentation to coun- cil, which took place Wednesday, kicked off with a video montage of images from across the region accompanied by the Bad Boys theme song from the television show ‘Cops’. “Next time lose the Bad Boy video and spend your time more constructively,” said Mayor Parish, who urged council to sup- port the introduction of quarterly reports earlier this year. He added, “I would speak up to us not down to us...provide us with statistics with your report BOB BOYCHYN ‘This is a work in progress.’ See DURHAM page 4 DAVID PICKLES ‘Very good news.’See LAND page 3 AtAGlance Lots up for grabs at annual police auction DURHAM –– Has the Durham Regional Police Service got a deal for you! P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 25, 2001 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 25, 2001 PAGE 3 P Ward 3 local Councillor David Pickles says the removal of the lands from airport consideration “is very good news for the envi- ronment and demonstrates the improved relationship developing between the federal government and us.” He believes the announcement was made possible in part due to the ongoing discussions of a local Stakeholder Group that has been meeting since 1998 to discuss the use of the airport lands. “I am hopeful we will soon reach an agreement on a process to ensure the community has a say on future use of the federal lands in Pickering,” Coun. Pick- les noted. Glenn De Baeremaeker, presi- dent of Save the Rouge Valley System, claims the announce- ment is a major victory for the group, which has been fighting to save the moraine and expand the Rouge Park for years. “This is a beautiful, green day for Canada and a historic day for the Oak Ridges Moraine,” he said. “To put this victory into per- spective, the area being donated is even bigger than the original Rouge Park, Canada’s largest urban park, when it was first an- nounced in 1990.” Part of the donated lands in- cludes a natural corridor running east-west along what Mr. De Baeremaeker calls “a strategic portion of the moraine.” He also says the federal gift lays the foundation for an unin- terrupted north-south greenbelt from the moraine through the Rouge to Lake Ontario. “With this announcement and the premier’s recent comments about the need for development to leapfrog the moraine, we now have every single level of govern- ment saying that the moraine must be protected,” Mr. De Baeremaeker added. “It’s time for the development industry to drop their plans to pave the moraine and start work- ing with us to protect the area.” Fax it: 683-7363 Land gift lauded by City, environmentalists GLENN DE BAEREMAEKER ‘Beautiful, green day.’ LAND from page 1 City’s youth can sail the spring and summer away PICKERING —The Pick- ering Yacht Club and The Edge Youth Centre are joining forces to provide a sailing program for young people this spring and summer. Youth aged 12 to 15 are invit- ed to sign up for the program and learn the various aspects of sail- ing. The program will begin with young people helping to do some bodywork and refinishing on the sailboats to prepare them for the water. Youth will then learn all the ins and outs of sailing from members of the Pickering Yacht Club. The free program is slated to begin in early April and will run through August. Any youth interested in par- ticipating in the program, or any local businesses interested in be- coming a sponsor, are asked to contact Paul Pryce at The Edge Youth Centre at 837-7658. • Extractions in Hospital • FREE 2nd Opinion Consultation • Collect From Insurances DRIVER EDUCATION CENTRE ONTARIOSAFETYLEAGUE ESTABLISHED 1913 CALL TODAY AND REGISTER 426-9611 68 HARWOOD AVE. Boychyn, who serves as chairman of the PSB, said it was “im- portant to lay the basic founda- tion...we didn’t want to overburden everybody with a tremendous amount of information.” “This is a work in progress, we had to start somewhere,” added Mayor Moffatt, who also serves on the board. The overview consisted of what was essentially an introduction to po- lice governance, in which Coun. Boy- chyn explained the role of police ser- vices boards and the status of polic- ing here. “The aim is to create a basis for a common understanding and collabo- ration between council and the PSB,” Coun. Boychyn said, telling council- lors the report would not deal with the budget or current contract negoti- ations. He reported the board is develop- ing a formal governance model to “determine and interpret the commu- nity’s needs” and to create direction for the police service. He also reported while crime rates are generally declining in Durham, violent crime rates here are “not sub- stantially declining.” Coun. Boychyn told his colleagues the Region has fewer police officers per capita than most other regions, has fewer civilian members of the po- lice service per capita and spends less per capita on policing than most other regions. A/P PAGE 4 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 25, 2001 Durham crime updates go to councillors DURHAM from page 1 Durham employee a true life-saver An Oshawa man was honoured for the life-saving actions he took at an accident scene last fall dur- ing a special presentation by the local branch of the Canadian Red Cross at Wednesday’s Regional council meeting. Barry Bynoe, an employee of the Durham Region Works De- partment, received a First Aid Rescuer Award Wednesday in recognition of his actions on Nov. 4, 2000 when he helped adminis- ter CPR to a man who was in- volved in a head-on collision on Rossland Road. “His quick action played an important part in saving the vic- tim’s life,” Sharon Walker, branch manager of the local Canadian Red Cross, told councillors. “It’s always a thrill for us...when our candidates use their skills to make a difference.” Mr. Bynoe, an 11-year em- ployee with the Region, first re- ceived CPR training in 1983 and has updated his training every two years since then, he said in an in- terview, noting he had never used his skills until he came across the car accident last November. “I was on my way to work on Saturday morning and I noticed two cars involved in a head-on collision,” he said, noting he could see a man “slumped over his steering wheel.” Mr. Bynoe says a couple was trying to get the man out of the car and when they did, he realized the man had no pulse. Mr. Bynoe and a woman who had stopped at the crash site ad- ministered CPR until paramedics arrived on the scene. “I did chest compressions until the ambulance showed up...it seemed like a couple of hours,” he said, noting the woman who helped him did artificial respira- tion on the man. “I was just doing what we ex- pect to do when we get the train- ing,” Mr. Bynoe said, noting he’s found all of the attention he’s re- ceived “a little overwhelming.” Mr. Bynoe reports he never did get an opportunity to meet the man whose life he helped to save, but notes paramedics informed him that the man made a full re- covery. Editorial &OPINIONS news advertiser March 25, 2001 Protection of farmland paramount To the editor: It seems everyday I read the newspaper there is some kind of environment story in it. I find this true of different papers all across the GTA. I wonder when we will start to look at the entire picture instead of just our own backyard? Here are a few issues as examples: we have a new trunk sewer going up the Ninth Line in Markham; the proposed York Region Water Pipeline from Lake Ontario in Pickering through the heart of the Duffin-Rouge Agriculture preserve in Markham, up to the Oak Ridges Moraine in Stouf- fville; and, of course, the Hwy. 407 eastern extension, exempted from a Federal Environment As- sessment because it was only seen as a 16-kilometre extension to Brock Road in Pickering; not the true 60-kilometre extension that it really is all the way out to 35/115 in Clarington. If you add these all up, they guarantee un- controlled future sprawl. As the public outcry increases regarding the loss of the farm- land and green space, the Province is selling off land hold- ings to developers ensuring that more farms go out of production, and more farmers out of busi- ness. This is all occurring at a time when international food supplies are being cut because of livestock disease. This should serve as a wake up call to us all. We need to pro- tect local food supplies. We must begin to practice serious conser- vation of green spaces and pro- tection of our waterways to en- sure we don’t have another Walk- erton. We all need to encourage our politicians to ensure intelli- gent regional planning is in place, instead of municipality by municipality, to ensure our sprawl doesn’t implode leaving us with an unaffordable, un- healthy style of life. Bernadette Manning After enjoying the best economic stretch since the 1960s it hardly seems fair Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is talking about capping public sector wages. But there it was for the Province’s one million public sector workers to see in black and white: “We cannot have raises of four per cent a year like the school teachers in Toronto,” mused Mr. Flaherty, who also represents Whitby- Ajax as MPP. Yes, Toronto public teachers did ne- gotiate a decent contract for themselves, but four per cent a year is hardly outra- geous, considering it’s barely more than one per cent ahead of inflation. Not only that, but teachers, for most of the 1990s, were stuck in a wage freeze as first Bob Rae (Rae Days) and then Mike Harris helped hold the line on teachers’ salaries. After seven years of economic growth rates that pushed three to four per cent a year, in Ontario you can’t blame workers for wanting decent rais- es. When even Walter Robinson of the ultra right-wing Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation is saying, “offering people two per cent is a pay cut, simple as that,” you can understand Mr. Flaherty is going to have a problem getting support for capping wage increases at that amount, should that be his goal. Public sector workers in Durham have just seen their regional councillors vote themselves an eight-per cent wage increase. How do you think they’d feel at being told they couldn’t even negoti- ate an increase for half that amount? Each one-per-cent pay increase for those one million workers will cost the Province approximately $275 million so four per cent is a $1.1 billion annual hit to the provincial treasury. But, lest we forget, more pay to those workers means more tax revenue back to the Province and more spending to boost the economy and to create even more tax revenue as a result. The net cost to the Province would actually be several hundred million less once the books are balanced. Most workers would be happy with three per cent or even 2.5 per cent in wage hikes, just so long as they’re ahead of the in- flation bogeyman. Yes, the Province backed off from giving MPPs a massive increase, though it was seriously considered. But private sector workers have done well during the boom times. It’s not fair to insist on belt-tightening for years and years and then say sorry, there’s no money left once a recession rears its ugly head. The public sector has been chopped and trimmed. The survivors deserve the chance to negotiate decent deals for themselves. EDITORIAL LETTERS TO THE EDITOR E-mail your comments on this opinion to steve.houston@durhamnews.net. The other evening I went for a walk on Hwy. 401. Yes, the 401, as in the middle of Canada’s busiest and most deadly highway. And, no, I wasn’t sui- cidal and I wasn’t trying to find an al- ternative to the Bloor Viaduct, now that the deep thinkers on Toronto council have declared that structure to be a suicide-free zone. What got me strolling the highway, as blithely as if I were in my own liv- ing room, was because I was trapped in a massive gridlock, courtesy of a simple truck accident that occurred a hundred metres or so ahead of me. When you have some 84 minutes to kill, in addition to the pacing and counting the potholes and checking the clock every few minutes, you do a lot of pondering and fuming. It’s called the highway traveller’s lament: Why, oh why, when an acci- dent occurs, no matter how minor, must traffic always grind to a com- plete and instant halt? Motorists, of course, are not entire- ly blameless. Pathetic creatures that we are, we are incapable of going by an accident scene without the rubber necking. But most times the finger of blame can be pointed directly at those folks in blue, the Ontario Provincial Police. A variant of the old light bulb joke applies here. How many OPP does it take to get traffic moving again? An- swer: A dozen. Eleven to phone in for instructions, and one to wave cars slowly through. I’m not kidding. Just ask the few thousand souls on the drive on the 401 westbound last Tuesday who watched in disbelief as at least a half-dozen squad cars roared towards the scene with sirens wailing and lights flashing. It was all very dramatic and im- pressive, except that once they got there they basically did nothing. They got out of their cars, surveyed the sit- uation in a thoughtful manner, scratched their collective heads, made a show of phoning in, conferred among themselves, then roared off again. All the while, the source of the problem - a rig that jackknifed across the roadway - just sat there blocking all three lanes. It wasn’t anything a tow truck couldn’t fix in a matter of minutes. Except no one seemed to be in charge. Now, I don’t think I’m being un- reasonable. A serious accident I can understand, those, for instance, in- volving a chemical spill or a fatality. In such cases, I don’t mind being late to work or even missing my dinner. But when it’s basically a fender ben- der? Let’s get real. But, I guess that’s the Canadian way. Go figure, eh? Just another traffic jam on the 401 It takes forever to sort out a simple accident Joe Chin Staff Writer E-mail your comments on this opin- ion to steve.houston@durhamnews.net. Trevor Beaton, who works on a Durham Region dairy farm, and Amy Wilson, a milk tester, have called off their trip to Scotland in June because of the possibility of bringing the easi- ly-spread disease back to Canada. “We felt like we shouldn’t risk it, especially with my girlfriend going to so many different farms,” Mr. Beaton said Thursday. “It’s pretty scary.” Ms. Wilson, who works for Dairy Herd Improvements Inc., goes from farm to farm testing milk for the com- pany, which has a government con- tract. Mr. Beaton works for Linton Farms, in Raglan, as a herder of about 90 cows. Mr. Beaton said most of his friends in Scotland are dairy farmers, some within 20 miles of infected farms. The crisis in the United Kingdom has seen officials destroy more than 270,000 animals, found at 435 sites. Another 130,000 animals are still to be destroyed. Foot-and-mouth, which does not affect humans, has spread to France, Holland and Ireland. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency advises people who travel to Britain or other infected countries to take appropriate precautions and to stay away from farms for 14 days after return. Mr. Beaton added there’s no truth to a report that if they went to Scot- land and returned to a farm within two weeks, they’d be prosecuted. Mr. Beaton and Ms. Wilson had been waiting as long as they could to make a decision about the trip but were told by their travel agent they’d lose their money after April 20. Mr. Beaton said he explained the reason for the delay and possible cancella- tion of the trip. “They said it wasn’t a good enough excuse. They weren’t taking it very seriously,” he said. He’s been informed there should be no problem getting their $200 de- posit back, he said. Foot-and-mouth disease attacks animals with cloven hooves, cows, sheep and goats. -WITH FILES FROM THE TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE (NC)–Research continues to show that some cancers can be prevented. Take these steps now to reduce your risk of developing cancer. 1.Be a non-smoker and avoid sec- ond-hand smoke. 2.Eat 5 to 10 servings of vegetables and fruit a day. Choose high fibre, lower fat foods. If you drink alcohol, limit your intake to 1 or 2 drinks a day. 3.Be physically active on a regular basis: this will also help you maintain a healthy body weight. 4.Protect yourself and your family from the sun. Reduce sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Check your skin regularly and report any changes to your doctor. 5. Follow cancer screening guide- lines. For women, discuss mammograms, Pap test, and breast exams with a health pro- fessional. For men, discuss testicular exams and prostate screening with a health profes- sional. Both men and women should also dis- cuss screening for colon and rectal cancers. 6.Visit your doctor or dentist if you notice a change in your normal state of health. 7.Follow health and safety instruc- tions both at home and at work when using, storing and disposing of hazardous materials. For more information on how to reduce your risk of cancer, contact your local unit of the Canadian Cancer Society or call the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cancer Information Service toll- free at 1-888-939-3333. MOBILE SHOWROOM Imagine going through life never having to wax, shave or tweeze an unwanted hair ever again? Sounds incredible. Now imagine doing it affordably, safely and faster than ever before. How? The Laser Care Clinic in Scarborough at 2235 Kennedy Road, employs a brilliantly effective process called IPL or Intense Pulsed Light. How does IPL remove hair quickly and perma- nently? It uses highly controlled flashes of light which are selectively absorbed by hair-filled follicles lying below the surface of the skin. This absorbed light heats the hair, which damages or destroys the regrowth potential of the follicle. All without damaging the surrounding tissue. This is a long-lasting solution to unwanted hair and is FDA approved. This process is a step beyond traditional laser and requires fewer treatments. And winter- time is ideal because peo- ple are recommended to avoid the sun while undergoing hair removal as the underlying skin will be sensitive to UV for a few days during exfoliation. If you’d like to hear more, book a consulta- tion and test patch now, just call (416) 754-9444 and ask for LIL. We’ll take great care of you. P PAGE 10 NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY EDITION, March 25, 2001 BY SUSAN O’NEILL Staff Writer One of Durham’s finest is preparing for what will likely be the ride of his life. Durham Regional Police Sergeant John Keating told Regional councillors Wednesday he’s getting set to cycle across the United States to raise money and awareness of autism. Sgt. Keating’s seven-year- old son Kurtis suffers from autism, a developmental dis- ability that severely affects an individual’s social and com- munication skills. “There is no cure, at least not today, and that’s why I’m here. I’m hoping to make a difference of some sort,” he said. The 35-year-old Courtice resident starts his trek in New York City on April 27 and will travel 7,300 miles on a Cervelo road bike, visiting 44 cities in 24 states, before reaching San Diego, Califor- nia on July 19. He’s hoping to raise $10 million to fight the disease during the cross-country event this summer. To date he’s collected about $100,000 in private dona- tions. The 17-year veteran of the police force told councillors his son was diagnosed with autism at age two. “It happened almost overnight,” he said, telling council his son simply lost all of the communication skills he had developed. He said while his six-year- old daughter Krystal has lots of friends, Kurtis doesn’t have any. “He doesn’t play like the other kids, he doesn’t talk like the other kids,” he said, noting “most autistic kids don’t have play skills.” Sgt. Keating told council- lors he first conceived of the idea to organize a fund-rais- ing event for autism while watching a television pro- gram in October, 1998 about Terry Fox. While he was watching the program a canvasser came to his door asking for a donation to a local charity. “It just hit me, I’ve never once had anybody knock on my door or call my house asking for a donation for autism research,” he said, noting that’s when he came up with the idea for Cycle USA (Cycle to Understand and Solve Autism). Sgt. Keating told council- lors he decided to cycle across the United States sim- ply because of the population base. He’s planning to orga- nize a similar event across Canada next year, he noted. “What you are embarking on is truly amazing,” said Durham Region Chairman Roger Anderson. “I wish you much success.” In an interview Sgt. Keat- ing said he’s been training for the past three months with Barry Shepley who coached Simon Whitfield, the winner of the Olympic triathlon gold medal at the Sydney Games last summer, as well as for- mer Olympian Aubrey Bryce. He’s currently cycling about 200 miles a week. He told reporters, “If you saw my son you wouldn’t have a clue he had autism...other disabilities are more obvious...one of the big problems with autism is it’s just not that visible.” But, that’s what he’s hop- ing to change, he says. “The first goal is to raise as much money as we possi- bly can,” he said, adding his second priority is to raise awareness. “Six out of 10 people don’t know what autism is. The other four think its ‘Rain Man’,” he said, noting each city he visits on the tour is hosting an event to raise awareness of autism. He reports although the event is being organized in conjunction with the Autism Society of America, the funds raised can be given to any re- searcher throughout the world. “I want the money to go to whoever is doing the best re- search,” he said. For more information about CycleUSA or to make a donation, visit Sgt. Keat- ing’s Web site at www.cy- cleusa.net. And so is the public school board policy, which allows students back into class if they have nits in their hair, but are receiving treatment. Norm Powers, operations superintendent at the Durham District School Board, reaffirmed the board’s policy at a recent standing committee meet- ing. “(Head lice) are going to be with us as long as civi- lization is here,” he com- mented at the meeting. Mr. Powers said the board developed its policy in 1999 after the Durham Region Health Department said a no-nits policy, previ- ously in place in Durham public schools, was not needed. Nits are lice eggs. The health department cited a study by the Infec- tious Diseases and Immu- nization Committee of the Canadian Pediatric Society, which said no-nits policies “are not based upon any ob- jective data demonstrating that this is effective in con- trolling head lice.” Parents sporadically blame the policy for nit out- breaks in schools and some want the no-nits policy back. “We’re not prepared to do that,” Mr. Powers said in an interview. “We follow the recom- mendations of the Durham health unit.” While the health depart- ment does not have a policy, but only provides advice to boards, he said “they defi- nitely have been involved in the development of (board) policy over the years.” A former school princi- pal, Mr. Powers said in his experience it can take a long time to get kids back to school if they are prevented from coming back to school because of nits. “I’ve seen kids stay off for weeks,” said Mr. Powers, adding that’s not fair. In Uxbridge, where par- ents have called for a return to the no-nits policy, Mr. Powers’ comments weren’t welcomed. “Why are we surrounded by boards that have no-nit policies?” questioned Sheila Marie Richardson, a parent at Uxbridge Public School. She said no-nits policies are in place at the York Re- gion, Trillium Lakelands and Kawartha Pine Ridge district school boards. Ms. Richardson said a no-nits policy will not eradi- cate head lice, but will help control them, as opposed to the board’s “reinfestation policy.” “We saw it in our own school,” she said. “A kid would come back and a month or six weeks later they would have it again.” The medicated shampoo the board recommends, said Ms. Richardson, does not necessarily kill nits. She said the fight against nits has to go a step further if parents are having trouble controlling them, and SCCs should be involved in help- ing those families. Mr. Powers said kids are permitted back in school with nits only after a med- icated treatment, and they are inspected for nits at the school when they return. The process repeats itself with a second treatment and inspection a week later. NORM POWERS ‘We follow the recommendations of the Durham health unit.’ Pickering input on governance sought Durham chairman reminds officials of deadline PICKERING —The City of Pickering has until the end of April to provide the Region with its input on the future of governance in Durham, Regional Chairman Roger Anderson reminded councillors Mon- day. Mr. Anderson, who at- tended the City’s executive committee to provide local councillors with his annual update on the issues affect- ing the Region, told the committee he believes the two-tier structure is work- ing fine here. “My advice to the Province is to stick to what works,” he said, adding he doesn’t believe the Region needs to give up the current “good, responsive govern- ment” to address the issue of governance reform. Rather, the chairman he suggested Durham can streamline services while continuing with the current municipal structure. He also noted Durham will need input on the gov- ernance issue from area municipalities by the end of April so Regional coun- cillors can discuss the issue at a retreat planned for May prior to submitting Durham’s comments to the Province in June. In addition to the issue of governance reform, Mr. Anderson reported the Re- gion will also be tackling a variety of challenges this year, ranging from waste management to hospital funding and social hous- ing. “Finding a new landfill site is just part of the waste management solution,” he said, noting the Region needs to look at expanding its recycling and compost- ing programs. On the hospital front, Mr. Anderson said while he hopes the Region can make a contribution to the capital expansions planned here, “with all the pressures (facing Durham)...we can’t simply add 10 per cent to the tax bill.” He also reported the Re- gion is in the middle of conducting an audit of the social housing units it is now responsible for under the transfer of the program from the Province that took place Jan. 1. However, he maintains Durham is up to the chal- lenges that lie ahead. “I would suggest Durham is managing well,” he said, noting there is a role for the Province to play in assisting upper-tier municipalities with their responsibilities. “If the Province expects us to manage social pro- grams and infrastructure expansions...they need to give us the tools,” Mr. An- derson said. Podiatrist- Foot Specialist A March Break Can Occur Anytime During The Year A March Break or stress fracture usually occurs after a long march or hike as was seen in army recruits on long 20 mile runs. The most com- mon bone involved is the 2nd metatarsal (50% of the time) just behind the metatarsal joint where the toe attaches to the foot. The 3rd and 4th metatarsals are also equally likely to experi- ence a stress fracture at 25% of the time each. A stress fracture occurs due to excessive, continuous pressure over a long period of time, unlike a regular fracture which is the result of a major trauma or force. The likelihood of a stress fracture occurring depends on the strength of the bone (density decreases with age) and the force applied. Besides marines or army recruits, a stress fracture of the metatarsal can be seen in long dis- tance runners, aerobic exercisers or women walking any distance in high heeled shoes which puts a lot of pressure on the forefoot. Over time of repetitive stress, the bone fatigues and cracks. You would imagine that all fractures should show on an x-ray, but that is not always so, especial- ly with stress fractures. If an x-ray shows negative (no fracture) but pain, swelling and an increased temperature over the head of the metatarsal persist, take another x-ray 14 days after the initial onset of symptoms. Although a fracture line may still not show, new bone deposi- tion will be noticeable at the injury site. Patients will usually compensate for the pain by walking on the out- side of the foot or heel. Fractures of the metatarsals, unlike other fractures, do not require immobilization therefore, they do not require a cast. An elastic bandage bound around the foot and ankle is all that is required. However, all activities that put stress and pressure on the frac- ture site should cease especially the type of activity that caused the fracture in the first place. Comfortable shoes are most important and ultrasound should be avoided. Given time, the fracture will heal and you will be back doing all your activities -- just exercise a little patience. HOPE YOUR MARCH BREAK WAS STRESS- FREE. If you have a ques- tion you would like answered or a topic you would like addressed, please send it to ASK THE PODIATRIST C/O THE NEWS ADVERTIS- ER. And if your weight or fitness levels are not what you want, you can exer- cise more, you can go on a diet, or you can join a fitness centre. You already know the solu- tions to all life's chal- lenges, so why are you not living the life of your dreams? "The solu- tion," explains Rory Sheehan, Senior trainer at Positive Strategies "results in how we com- municate to ourselves so that we can apply the knowledge we already have." Over the past sev- eral years Rory Sheehan has taught thousands of people to improve the quality of their lives by reprogramming their unconscious minds for success. "It is actual quite manageable" says Rory, with an energy of excite- ment in his voice "once you understand the tech- niques we teach in our courses, you take control of your life." It is his belief that for you to experience any positive outcomes in your life, the solution must come from your unconscious mind. This means that once you understand how to com- municate with your unconscious mind, any- thing becomes possible. With three universi- ty degrees and an impressive list of qualifi- cations in mind body communication, Rory Sheehan knows what he is talking about. Rory is certified as a Hypnotherapist and a Master Hypnotist. But with all the different methods of weight loss being marketed at desperate indi- viduals that have tried and failed before, which ones really work? There is no quick fix, no spe- cial pill, nothing abnormal. The only way to lose weight and become healthier is a change of lifestyle. You must learn how to eat properly balanced nutrition. That doesn’t mean you can’t have your favourites anymore. Most people look for the quick fix; “Take the fat off me as fast as possible so I can be thin again!” There are weight loss pro- grams that can accomplish this, but in the long run, you will gain it back again, and in some cases, damage yourself inside to get there. In these cases, it would be easier on your heart and organs to stay heavy than to get caught in the “yo-yo” syndrome like most Canadians. Unless you learn how to lose your weight safely and keep it off for life using a common sense, well balanced grocery food plan, you will never succeed at losing that weight. For Canadians that join the average weight loss centre and manage to reach their goal weight, 95% gain it back within the next 2 years. So many people come in to our clinic with histories of joining other weight loss centres, with a significant weight loss, only to gain it all back and more. For those who can relate to this, it was not your failure, it was your program that failed you. Taking pills or special foods and shakes might help you lose weight, but you don’t solve the underlying problem that made you gain weight in the first place. After you have reached your goal and stop taking these prod- ucts, you go back to your old eating habits and gain it all back, and then some. High protein diets are anoth- er damaging way of losing weight. People are caught up in the dramat- ic big losses of pounds, but don’t realize that they are damaging their kidneys and liver. They could even make it very difficult to lose weight properly once they gain their weight back again. Canadians are also being misled that EMS (electric muscle stimulation) will help them lose body fat. Any exercise physiol- ogists will tell you that this is impossible. From my professional football career, I am very familiar with EMS machines. I have one at home. They are used to rehab injuries to muscles, joints & liga- ments. They DO NOT significantly add muscle tone or cause weight loss. Loading muscle with some kind of resistance through its natur- al range of motion is the ONLY way one can make a significant differ- ence in their muscle mass . The ONLY method of weight loss that can work is to teach the individual how to eat balanced nutrition using their own grocery Losing Weight for a Healthy New Millennium Health experts state that digestive and colon disorders cause more absen- teeism from work than any other disor- ders. Symptoms such as gas, bloating, burping, and cramping vary in severity from person to person, but these are all signs that there are imbalances in the digestive system. Many people who suffer these symptoms resign to living with them, but they shouldn't have to. These symptoms are your body’s way of telling you to address the problem. Irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, diverticulitis, crohn’s disease and celiac disease all stem from a poorly function- ing digestive system. Nutritionally, there are five main things you can do to help your digestive system function more optimally: A) Most importantly, eat a diet free of your food intolerances/allergens - dairy, wheat, sugar, beef, citrus and nuts are often irritants to the bowel if imbalanced. Choose lean meats (chick- en, fish, turkey), rice, vegetables, and fruit. Beans are good fiber, but only if you digest them properly. i.e. they don’t cause bloating and extreme gas. If you are just beginning to add beans to your diet, do so slowly. B) Cleanse the colon. Seek the help of a professional before embarking on any herbal cleansing program. Colon Irrigation (“a professional enema”) is another way to clean the colon of toxic debris. There are profes- sional practitioners who do this. C) Supply beneficial bacteria (aci- dophilus and bifidus) to the gut by eat- ing yogurt and by supplementation. Antibiotics, birth control pills, corti- sone, and diets containing highly refined flour and sugar contribute to an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the colon. An overgrowth of yeast in the body can ensue. Note: If you have taken an antibiotic you should definite- ly be taking a beneficial bacteria prod- uct for at least six weeks to help you get your gut back into proper balance. D) Support your digestive system with a digestive enzyme supplement. This is especially needed if you feel excessively heavy and/or bloated after meals. Eating a heavy processed food diet diminishes your body’s own supply of digestive enzymes thus needing to supplement. Enzymes are the spark plug in your body and many people over the age of thirty are in short sup- ply. E) If you have had your gallbladder removed then you are a candidate for needing digestive enzymes that contain bile. Your gall- bladder stores bile, but because you no longer have one it can make the digestion of fats a lot more difficult. Also after a few years miner- al deficiencies can creep in such as calcium, magnesium, iron, etc. Keeping the digestive system healthy is the most important thing you could do for your health. Many diseases and disorders (i.e. arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, chronic headaches, sinusitis and skin problems) can stem from colon imbalances, so do your self a favor - keep it balanced and supported. It must be taught on an individ- ual basis to ensure the clients learn what food they must avoid and what changes they must make to their nutritional habits to become more balanced. It is a multi billion dollar industry with North Americans trying absolutely every gimmick out there to lose some inches, usually getting frustrated after dropping so much cash and feeling like a failure. I tried to ignore it, focusing on the topic of Yoga and how I could explain the numerous wonderful healing ben- efits. Again, the spiral filled my vision, again I pushed it away, not sure of its meaning in relation to Yoga. So I thought of how Yoga affected my own life and why I was drawn to Yoga. During my teen years my external body image seemed to be of the most impor- tance. I exercised with calisthen- ics, sports and dieted, but I was still not satisfied with my appear- ance, in truth, with myself. In fact I had little self-esteem at all. When I reached my twenties, a blessing (I did not realize it was a true bless- ing at the time) entered my little world. I was introduced to Yoga. Over the next eight years the jour- ney continued and this is what I’ve discovered on “Why do Yoga?”. Yoga is not a form of calis- thenics in which we execute some motions while our thoughts and feelings wander elsewhere. Yoga brings us into total beingness by focusing our awareness on body and breath. It brings us “home” to ourselves by centering us in our body through our breath. We can then experience well-being and a quiet, gentle sense of our own power. Yoga, therefore, is a gift to ourselves. Yoga is a way to come from the outside to the inside; from the external to the internal; from the hustle and bustle of life to inner silence, the peace within. Yoga makes us fit. It helps us to find our own power, strength, and self esteem, by drawing us to our own source of energy. It is a method of curing and healing with move- ment, breathing exercises, medita- tion, and concentration. By concentrating on the movement and and coor- dinating it with our breathing rhythm, we develop body conscious- ness. We become aware of ourselves, who we really are and unfold our inner beauty. This has been my blessing in my life, my transformation which still continues. The image of the spiral finally made sense to me, in relation to yoga. A spiral is movement around and beyond a cir- cle, always returning to itself, but never at exactly the same place. Spirals remind us that life is movement, that each moment is unique, and that form is the essence of transformation. Even if we go into the same yoga posture every time we practice, each time will be unique, ever changing, always finding our edge and unravelling, a little bit at a time, who we truly are. Like the spiral, yoga is the opportunity for change; the window of transformation. For more informa- tion on Yoga or upcoming classes, please contact Greenwood Holistic Health Care Centre (905) 619-1405 or visit us at www.greenwood.com The Yoga Spiral by Lisa Parker, Yoga Instructor, Reflexologist, and Herbalist Yoga is not a form of calis- thenics in which we execute some motions while our thoughts and feelings wander else- where. Show the kids what healthy livin’s all about MAPS AND INFO 1-800-841-2729 HIKING BIKING BLADING SKIING Symptoms -- Friend or Foe? Karen Tazar R.N.C.P. C.N.P. By: Karen Tazar R.N.C., C.N.P. What is the symptom? According to the Oxford American Dictionary: A symptom is a sign of the existence of a condition, especially a perceptible change from what is nor- mal in the body or its functioning indi- cating disease of or injury. We are so distracted by life that we endure symp- toms until they either multiply or just get unbearable forcing us to take action. Symptoms are really a blessing in disguise altering us to a problem or condition that needs attention. If noth- ing is done, symptoms can deprive you of the good things life has to offer, and the good you have to offer life. It's absurd to endure symptoms for years then hope a doctor can undo all the damage. If you have symptoms such as headaches, irritable bowel, consti- pation, sinus problems, fatigue, weight gain or others: Remember, your health and happiness are your responsibility. So here is your checklist for well-being: ~ Air quality (fresh air & deep breathing) ~ Water (quantity and quality) ~ Food (quality and possible food allergies/sensitivities) ~ Exercise (frequency & variety) ~ Rest (amount and quality) ~ Stress (amount and manage- ment ability) Indoor air pollution is said to be more harmful than out- door pollution. Look into your home first. Furnace fil- ters, chemical cleaners, ven- tilation. Water is extremely important as our bodies are over 70% composed of it and need it for our cells to function properly! Be fussy about the quality of water you drink. Reverse osmosis is the most highly recom- mended. Food has an enor- mous effect on our well- being, get your allergy/sen- sitivities tested and have a complete nutritional assess- ment. Many clients tested have found they have been eating food they are sensi- tive to sometimes all their lives, and have suffered ter- rible symptoms as a result. Exercise, rest, and stress can be directly related to all of the above. If you have symptoms, get your aller- gy/sensitivities tested and find out which foods are the culprits, many people are experiencing the benefits of energy & health once again just from avoiding foods they are sensitive to. Karen Tazar does allergy/sensitiv- ity testing in the Durham region appointments (905) 837-6627. The Action Challenge Toward Creating Change What place in the world is scary and exciting, risky and adventurous, needs a good solid plan in order to get there, plus a bundle of trust and faith? If you can simmer up enough courage and strength to reach this place, I promise you, that you will stand in a big puddle of pride. No, it's not in the middle of a rainforest or an African jungle, although it may feel like you are in one of them at times, if you choose to enter this place. This place that I speak of challenges all of us and it is called "Change." What usually keeps us from creating a change in our life is fear, the fear of failure and the fear of the unknown. If you decide to make a change in your life and fear surfaces, acknowledge it and learn to go within and ask the fear what it is trying to tell you. Try to see the worst case sce- nario and then ask yourself, "Is this scenario something that I can live through?" If the answer is yes, then you have learned to face one of your biggest fears before it has a chance to manifest into reality. Being able to visualize your fears towards change, is quite liberating. After visualizing the worst case scenario, take the time to journal about it. Before you close your jour- nal, softly pray, "I surrender and let go of all of my fears to you God. I will not need to experience them in my physical life because I have seen them in my mind's eye and I was able to withstand them. I am confident that I can now create the change that I wish to make and I ask for your love and support in order that I may achieve my goal. Thank you God for this amazing insight and thank you for your love and your daily guid- ance. Amen" Once you have said your prayers, write them down in your journal on the following page. It will inspire you and let you know that you are not alone, and that God is sup- porting you. If you experience moments where you are challenged while in the middle of making a change , go back and read your prayers and they will give you the inner strength that you require to allow your trust and faith to grow. Learning to have trust and faith is the most important ingredient toward making changes in your life. After the writing down you prayers, complete the following steps: 1)Plan to change only one area of your life 2)Write out your plan of action in your journal, so that you know exactly how to begin 3)Ensure that you wake up each day knowing the action neces- sary to achieve your goal. Learn to put any negative thoughts and emo- tions aside and focus on the action necessary. For instance, it you don't feel like taking the action necessary to achieve your goal that day. put those feelings aside, read over your plan, say your prayers and jump into action! 4)Make both short and long term goals and each time that you reach a short term goal, have a cele- bration. Make the celebration very special and journal the pride that you have in yourself for your accomplish- ments. 5)Practice positive self-talk to reinforce your commitment toward change. 6)Love yourself for taking the time to make yourself and your life better. Look into the mirror daily and say to yourself "your name" and I am so proud of the action that you are taking "state the change that you wish to achieve." We all need positive parenting and this is a great way to feel like your parents are actually loving and prais- ing you for your efforts. Trust me, this works! Believe it or not, learning to trust that you can handle anything that happens is much more important than whether or not you succeed. Faith only grows when we learn to take action without knowing the end result. From now on, when you need to enter the mystical land of un-tread waters "Change," learn to believe in yourself and follow the above steps for a closer connection to a more empowered and better You. I love you, love yourself! Love and blessing Heather Campbell, Psychotherapist. Take a pill people. What new Calgary general manager Craig Button did was this - he traded a small (5 foot 10", 190 pound) player with two, count 'em, two NHL playoff games to his credit for a rather large (6 foot 2", 200 pound) player with 36 playoff games in his hip pocket. That's the type of bold move you must make when you take over a team that has missed the playoffs the past four seasons. You don't just walk over to the wall, hit a switch and POOF!! you have a better team. You make one move at a time while following a game plan. That is what Button is doing. I like Cory Stillman. The fact is, when I lived in Peterborough where he was born and raised, I used to workout with him at the local YMCA. He's a great kid and a very good NHL player. But building a contender is not a popularity contest and the Flames simply have too many small to medium sized forwards. Stillman was sacrificed to help the Flames get bigger and better defensively. Conroy has been a contender for the Selke Trophy that is presented annually to the league's best defensive forward the past few seasons. He doesn't score like Stillman, but then again, Stillman is not known for shutting down the opposition's top line. Button, 42 was given the responsibility of rebuilding the woeful Flames this season after having spent the past 12 years in the Dallas Stars' organization. He was director of player personnel the past two years. Working with the likes of Bob Gainey and Ken Hitchcock, Button knows a thing or two about winning. Buiding a competitive team, especially in a small market, small Canadian market at that, is no easy task. But Button knows successful teams need various types of strengths. And with Stillman and Marc Savard, he had two small and creative centres which was one too many. Defence in the NHL is every bit as important, if not more important, than offence. Pittsburgh has Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr, but are the Penguins Stanley Cup contenders? Not with their average goaltending and defence. New Jersey doesn't have a scorer among the NHL's top 15, but is a decent bet to repeat as champions. Button made the Flames a better team through the addition of Conroy. That's the bottom line. Mike Brophy is senior writer for The Hockey News. 710 Painting and Decorating 715 Moving and Storage Fax us your ad at 683-0707 SELLING YOUR CAR OR TRUCK? Showcase it across Durham Region.
