The sport of war Paintball garners shoot for thrills on the battlefield BY DAVID STELL Staff Editor Crouched in the shade of a cedar tree, gun in hand, the warrior adjusts his goggles ever aware of eacti sound around him. His heart races as his eyes dart around his surroundings, wondering if he's been spot- ted. Suddenly a cracking sound, movement at the edge of the stand of trees and his target comes into sight. Tak- ing careful aim, cautious of creating even the slightest sound or movement -that may betray his cover, he raises the barrel of his gun and lines up his -target. A slight twitch of his trigger finger and the shot is released. "Damn!" The warrior smiles as he hears the anguished Cry and sees the green explosion on the arm of his eliminated vic- tim. One down and more to go. Another 'kill' to notch in his belt and brag about to friends after the game. It's a scenario played out over and over again on sur vival game fields across North America. Increasing in popularity every year, mostly men and many women from. all walks of life, pick up paintball guns and don the safety gear necessary to hunt down their opposition on the combat field. They search for the thrill of shooting first and asking questions later. The only question left: Why do they do it? "Cause we're crazy," laughs Steve Clark of Os- hawa, just off the field after a practice round with his team- mates. Yes, practice. The game is taken to another level for many and teams across the continent compete in mock war scenarios for prize money and trophies. And to further expand on why, Mr. Clark points to the extreme excitement level involved. "It's a pure adrenaline rush," he says with a smile as he packs up his gear and con- templates whetherto clean his gun now or at home. Yet teammate Mark. Aik- man, who travels from Mis- sisiauga for practice at RLD Games in Ashburn, _ 'the team's home field, calls the war -like image of the game an illusion. "It's not a killing -game, it's a sport," Mr. Aikman says. Another paintball enthusi- ast, Ray Uotila from Scarbor- ough, out using the field's shooting range on the same day, points how the sport is different from war "Everybody's friendly," the ambulance driver during the Week andpaintball spe- NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION; July 16, 2000 PAGE 7 A/P Paintball necessities DAVID STEINThis Week photos Gettingthe dmp on the enemy is the name of the game in paintball battles. like many of the serious play, cialist on weekends says. "Afterwards, everyone's friends again: Trevor tvlcLaughlin of Os- hawa says he's been involved in , paintball battles for a few years. He bought a gun out of curiosity and took it to a field to test itout. That day he got into afield game of 3 -on -3. "I never felt so... alive," he says. "I didn't know what to expect." Mr. Aikman, a general contractor by day, started out ers, playing a game called Laser Tag. The correlation to the army in paintball sparked his interest to give it a try. "Someone ` said 'Why don't you try it?' and once you try, it's a hook," he says. As a group the assembled players point to one aspect of the game looked atas priority one: safety. Itis the main con- cern for anyone out on the field. "Like today, we were in the middle of a game and someone dropped . their mask,'' Mr. Clark said. "The game stopped and everyone stopped until he had his mask on again." "It is a very safe sport," Mr. Uotila agrees. Novice or expert, each player is given the safety rules before each trip onto the field: Strict rules have to be fol- lowed or you might find yourself heading home early. Casey MaMuizelaar, co- owner of Outback Paint Ball in Newcastle explains he started in his field because he loves the game. "I think it's one of the best. sports out there," he says. "It's the thrill of running around and shooting your friends." The necessary equipment for - survival games is provided for a rental rate at just about every facility. However, for the person looking to get involved on a more serious level, here is some of the equipment needed and price ranges for each in Canadian dol- lars. - • The face. mask: Even more important than the gun itself is the goggles and mask that protect the eyes first and foremost. Depending on the store, a good mask will cost up- wards of $50. • Guns will cost $200 to $5,000 or more e - pending on the manufac- turer. A few names in- cludeShocker, Tippman and Spyder paintball guns. Soft, environmental- ly safe, paint -filled pel- lets, in any variety of colours, for about $8 for 100 pellets on average. Optional equipment to consider, available at spe- cialty stores: • Squeegee for clean- ing out the barrel, of the gun when a misfire leaves the gun all gummed up. • Camouflage pants and jackets. • Knee, chest and neck protectors and cleats. Effects of mineral on aging athletes show promise Several weeks ago .I wrote a column warning readers about nutritional gobbledegook. I be- lieved I had discovered an excel- lent example of the modern snake -oil salesman. And that the source of this information, The University of California, 'Berke- ley Wellness Letter,' was beyond repute. After all, it's contents had the stamp of approval of this great university. 'The Wellness Letter' had cen- sured a product, developed by Dr. Patrick Flanagan, called 'Micro - hydrin.' Dr. Flanagan claimed his powerful antioxidant more was potent than vitamin C and E. An- tioxidants help to decrease free radicals, the end products of me- tabolism, believed to be responsi- ble for aging and chronic disease. What fed to his discovery? The people of northern Pakistan drink high-altitude water loaded with hydrogen ions. These people often live well over 100 years. Dr. Flanagan says our tap water robs the body of hydrogen ions result - • in chronic disease. And that Microhydrin provides us with an abundance of these ions. Dr. William Pryor, director of the Biodynamics Institute at Louisiana State University was quoted in the `Wellness Letter' as saying these claims were non- sense. Dr, Pryor is -an; expert on aging who I interviewed several years earlier and I respected his opinion. But I've subsequently learned the `Wellness Letter' omitted cer- tain facts. Dr. Lester Packer, who ironically is at the University of California's Department of Mole- cular and Cell Biology, is also an expert on antioxidants. Dr. Packer'sexperiments show Microhydrin possesses antioxi- dant activity against hydroxyl radicals. These radicals. are the re- sult of exposure to ionizing radia- tion. And they are the most dan- gerous free radicals occuring in biological systems. Dr. Joe McCord, another an- tioxidant scientist at the Universi- ty of Colorado, agrees Microby= drin` scavenges free radicals and also helps to recycle vitamin C. He supports the claims made by Dr. Flanagan. The effect of Microhydrin has been studied on several aging marathon runners. In January 1997, at age 39, Andrei IKusnet- zov ran the Brazil Marathon in 2 hi. 17 min . and 52 secs. The fol- lowing year after using Microhy- drin he ran two minutes faster. And two years later in a field of 12,000 runners he won the Boston Marathon Masters. In 1991, at age 39, Dr. Denis Brown, a physician in British Co- lumbia tried to climb Mt. Everest without supplemental oxygen. He reached 26,000 feet. In 1994 he again,. failed. But in 1999 at 47 years of age he decided to take Microhydrin. Dr. Brown hoped. Microhydrin would reduce the build-up of free radicals, and lactic acid and pro- vide energy. He succeeded in reaching the peak at 29,028 feet. This was accomplished without supplemental oxygen. And he re- ported he felt stronger and had . more energy than on previous climbs. The Exercise Physiology De- partment of the University of North Texas conducted a study of male cyclists. The purpose was to see if Microhydrin . increased en- durance during a 40 -kilometre race. Lactic acid accumulates dur- ing strenuous or prolonged exer- cise. This -causes pain and limits The Doctor Game W Gifford -tones M.D. endurance. Some cyclists were given four tablets _of Microhydrin a day dur- ing the week prior to testing and during the week of testing. Other cyclists were given placebo med- ication. Microhydrin significantly reduced lactic acid levels. Today we often hear the phrase; "We are what we eat." The supporters of Microhydrin claim "We are what we drink." And that the water content of human cells is a good indicator of health. In effect, healthy tissue holds water within the cells. But as we age cells lose water : and energy production decreases. Anyone looking at aging skin can hardly dispute that point. Microhydrin helps to fight this scenario. Experiments. show a 250 milligram capsule of Mi- crohydrin decreases the surface tension of water. This facilitates the movement of water into cells, increases the absorption of nutrients and helps removal of toxins. So what is Microhydrin? It's a mineral composed of silica, potassium and magnesium. This is formed into negatively charged colloids that are saturated with hydrogen. it's function is to pro- vide electrons for body fluids. And Dr. • Patrick Flanagan claims Microhydrin generates thousands CORRECTION FOR OUR 16 PAGE WAREHOUSE SALE PRE-PRINT (SALE DATES: JULY 10-16, 2000) (C072F000) Page 14 - Jeep TJ Ltd 21 -Speed Bicycle. The regular price and savings- advertised for this item are not correct. He said the tol- erance of residents is also an important consideration. "I think that people (whose homes) back onto parks think the parks will be vacant by 10 p.m.," said Insp. Morrison, noting the reality today is young people are in the parks at night. Calls to police are priori- tized by the force's communi BYMIKERUTA Staff Writer PICKERING — A Pick- ering Regional councillor is calling for a meeting between Durham police and residents fed up with youths partying in green spaces near . their homes. But while police say they're willing to listen to res- idents, they note*the problem is not unique to the city and most youths they encounter inparks are not breaking the law. Ward 2 Regional Council- lor Doug Dickerson wants Durham Regional Police Chief Kevin McAlpine to join him in `spearheading' the summit, which the councillor wants to occur within the next three weeks. In an interview, Coun. Dickerson questioned "the ;. neighbourhood attitude" of senior police officers: He maintains residents are losing respect for police because when they complain about excessive noise, drinking, drug -taking or vandalism in the parks, it can take up t two hours for officers to re- spond. By that time, the trou- blemakers are long gone. Coun. Dickerson beiieves the issue "is boiling just under the surface across the city" and if police dont step up their efforts, residents may take things into their own hands. In some parts of Pick- ering, residents have formed night patrols in an attempt to stens the problem, he says, "In other areas of Picker- ing, where residents are not organized, thjee or four DOUG DICKERSON Police should 'look at (residents) as additional eyes on the streets.' neighbours grab baseball bats and chase them out,". said, Coun. Dickerson. "All we're saying is you can'texpect residents to put up with this behaviour and not take ac- tion." Pickering resident Paul Urquhart said "it's about time" police and residents got together over the problem. Mr. Urquhart and neighbours patrolled the park in their area last year, and while he said there have been fewer proh lens this year, he noted there's lots of summer left and the patrols would soon be starting; up again. The ap- proach is to confront youths and politely ask them -to. move along. In 80 per cent of cases, the ' youths would oblige, but in 20 per cent of the incidents, Mr. Urquhart saidthere was resistance. • He cited one incident last year where Coun. Dickerson was on patrol with the resit dlen'ts and they, were speaking 12 Equal N orithly Payments.. AlllaNOL In Stock Inventor/ tee Cover 'Free Programmable Stat. 10 Yrs. "I think the police should be able to monitor the parks, to go into the park and get the kids out of there," he said. Police Inspector John Mor- risonsaid a number of meet- ings with Pickering and Ajax residents occurred last year. He explained the Commu- nity Response Unit is com- prised of plainclothes officers whose focus is liquor and street -level drug enforce- ment, duties which include cu monitoring parks. But most cop times when police encounter cd young people in a park Qom? they're merely playing sports or hanging out. said Insp. Morrison. "It's a small minority of the kids who are creating the problems," he said. Insp. Morrison said chas- ing youths out of a park will likely create a problem some- where else. And, with thou- sands of youths in Ajax and Pickering and countless green spaces, "the volume of the complaints" becomes the QJ 8-4 cations branch, said Insp." Morrison, adding there's no short-term solution to the .problem. Coun. Dickerson would like police to see residents as allies, not as annoyances. "These (residents) when they're out there, rather than looking at them as a pain, look at them as additional eyeson the street," he said. .a unimer Day Camp filled with fun, action and education held our Special Event Centre, adjacent to Cullen Gardens & Miniature Village, 300 Taunton Rd.
