June 12 at 7pm Pickering agrees to plan for walkway over 401 BByy LLeesslleeyy BBoovviiee Staff Writer PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ––––Rather than sit in traffic, here's a big chance to walk over it. A pedestrian bridge linking the Pickering GO Station to the City's downtown centre is no longer "pie in the sky" thanks to a firm commitment from the provincial government and a private-sector partner. More details will come for- ward in the next few weeks, but the Province, the City and a pri- vate partner will share the cost, with each kicking in a third, said Ward 1 Regional Council- lor Maurice Brenner. "I'm ecstatic," he said. "This vision goes back some seven years when the 401 was being widened." "People really thought it was far-fetched and pie in the sky," he added. "The argument was always we can't afford it but we can't af- ford not to do it. This is the life- line the City needs in terms of its downtown core." Described as a "now plan", the bridge's construction could begin as early as this year or the next, Coun. Brenner said. Provincial funding is expect- ed to take the form of a Super- Build grant and was announced Wednesday as part of $650 mil- lion of new money for trans- portation initiatives around the Golden Horseshoe. "One of the important pieces was getting the provincial dol- lars on the table so I pushed hard to make sure the money was there to move forward," said Finance Minister Janet Ecker, the Pickering-Ajax- Uxbridge MPP. (The bridge) "serves as an anchor for future development on the north side of the high- way, while expanding access to the Pickering station." A memorandum of under- standing among all three par- ties doesn't allow Pickering offi- cials to reveal the name of the private company, explained Coun. Brenner. As of Friday, police here have stopped laying charges for mar- ijuana possession, citing a cloud of confusion over Canada's cur- rent pot laws. Police won't try to stop public pot smoking on the street or parks, even though some store- owners or citizens may com- plain, said Durham Regional Police Deputy-Chief Chuck Mercier. And, federal prosecutors this week began staying "hundreds" of cases currently before the courts of possession under 30 grams, halting proceedings. Recent court rulings declar- ing the country's cannabis pos- session law no longer valid, and federal legislation introduced last week that would decrimi- nalize possession of small amounts of weed, have left po- lice in a haze. As a result, Durham police of- ficers have been given orders not to arrest or charge any per- son caught with less than 30 grams of marijuana. Deputy-Chief Mercier, who handed down the directive to front line officers across the re- gion, said the force has adopted the recommendation made Thursday by the Ontario Asso- ciation of Chiefs of Police. "They're known for doing massive develop- ment and advertising in downtown Toronto," Coun. Brenner said of the company, which came to Pickering with the idea. A conceptual plan has been drawn up for the glass-enclosed bridge. It will be "a work of art", a "tranquil corridor sys- tem", and a "people struc- ture, plain and simple", he said. "We were looking at a rainforest type of idea with the sound of running water. “It's not going to be a cold walkway with frost on the windows." Nor will there be adver- tising strewn across the 401. That was an original concern of the Ontario Ministry of Transporta- tion (MTO), which felt it was a safety issue. "With the rare excep- tion, their policy is the only overhead signage should be that of MTO transportation signage," said Ms. Ecker. "But there may be other options (for advertising) on other portions of the bridge." Bridge will be ‘work of art’ ✦ Bridge from page 1 Pickering girl found PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ––––A missing 13-year-old Pickering girl has been found and re- turned home. Aquiyla had left home the morning of May 29 to attend Fairport Beach Public School. Durham Regional Police report a student at the school saw the girl near the facility around 8:35 a.m. Prior to being found, family members had checked local areas where Aquiyla had been known to frequent, as well as con- tacting her friends, all with no success. "It's been an exciting project to be involved in," said Ontario Finance Minister Janet Ecker after donating the text of UOIT president Gary Polonsky's recent doctoral thesis on leadership. "Before the 1995 elec- tion, the four Durham MPPs met to discuss the priorities for the region. This was one of the big ones." And the four 'Durham Js' as the local MPPs are known - Mrs. Ecker, Enterprise, Opportunity and Inno- vation Minister Jim Flaherty, Minis- ter of Natural Resources Jerry Ouel- lette and John O'Toole - were all in attendance for the official start of the library's construction. "Invaluable teamwork made it happen," continued Mrs. Ecker. "We met at a Golden Griddle (restau- rant before the '95 election)." She credited her colleague Mr. Flaherty for getting the seed money for the university when he was finance min- ister, with her followup last year of the formal legislation that made the new university a reality. Ken Swan, president of the Durham College student associa- tion, said the new library would help him and other students. "The li- brary will help us succeed in the workforce in the future. "It's going to be a wonderful place," said Mr. Polonsky, who told the assembled group how impor- tant the Fort William library was to him when he was a young student. "I used to spend days and weeks in that library. It was the only place in town where everybody gathered. "This place will propel Durham College to new heights," he added. "We're already number one in the GTA overall." The structure will be built to the north of existing Oshawa campus buildings, just south of Conlin Road. It will encompass 73,000 square feet, be four storeys high and comes with a price tag of $20.7 million. The li- brary will be shared by both UOIT and Durham College students and is scheduled to open in late 2004. "It's on time and on budget," said Bob Strickert, chairman of UOIT's board of governors. The University of Ontario Insti- tute of Technology will offer nine de- gree programs to begin with when the first students arrive in Septem- ber. The Durham Catholic District School Board and the Ontario Eng- lish Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA), Durham elementary unit, agreed to a two-year deal, retroac- tive to Sept. 1, 2002. Negotiations had been going poor- ly, and when the board team recent- ly asked for a no-board report, teachers feared it was a prelude to a lockout. The report signalled the start of a 17-day countdown to labour action by teachers or a board lockout that could have taken place next week. "It was a pleasant surprise that things came together as quickly as they did and that we saw a different approach from the board," said Marnie Daly, OECTA Durham ele- mentary president. She said the teachers' negotiating team would recommend acceptance of the deal to the union executive at a meeting tonight (Wednesday). Te achers are to ratify the deal at a June 17 general membership meet- ing. Patricia Manson, the board's edu- cation director, said the board was "very pleased" to have a tentative deal. If teachers sign off on the agree- ment, the board of trustees will vote on the deal June 23. Neither side will release details of the agreement until then. The teachers had been without a contract for nine months and had voted 87 per cent in favour of giving the union a strike mandate. foundation in law... It's sort of a great, big, grey area right now," said the deputy-chief of operations. Until the law is clarified by parlia- ment or the courts, Durham pot- heads won't be prosecuted and can hang on to their stash - if it's less than 30 grams. In Toronto, police Chief Julian Fantino also ordered his officers Thursday to no longer lay simple possession charges, but to still seize marijuana and document investiga- tions, with the potential for laying charges down the road. In Durham, officers won't confis- cate amounts less than 30 grams for fear it could constitute an "unlawful seizure," said Deputy-Chief Mercier. "The courts have ruled the simple act of possession (of less than 30 grams) is not an offence and we have to follow the law. Right now we're in- structing officers not to (seize) since there's a question whether that would be an unlawful seizure," he said, adding the force adopted its stance following a review by its legal services department of recent court rulings. In recent weeks, Durham police have continued to lay possession charges, but prosecutions were halt- ed before the court process began. Typically, persons charged with possession are released on a promise to appear in court and the charge is "sworn out" before a justice of the peace. But in light of the legal limbo, JPs are no longer accepting the charges. "The JPs have been refusing to sign the information required to file the charges with the court," said Sergeant Paul Malik, police spokesman. Terry Kelly, a federal Crown pros- ecutor, said all possession cases cur- rently before Durham courts involv- ing less than 30 grams are being stayed. A stay halts the prosecution, which can be revived within 12 months. The Crown last week began re- questing judges stay "hundreds" of cases and will wait until "there's some clarification in the law," said Mr. Kelly. Not only are police confused about the state of cannabis posses- sion, they're frustrated by a lack of direction from the federal justice de- partment. "While the federal government fo- cuses its efforts on decriminalizing simple possession of marijuana, our police officers have been left in a total sense of uncertainty regarding enforcement of the current law," said Chief Fantino. Durham's Deputy-Chief Mercier assured police won't let up on mari- juana traffickers and growers, but smokers won't be targeted. He doesn't expect the region to go to pot, but predicted some prob- lems, including police concerns about impaired motorists who smoke and drive. An interim report is expected this fall, with a final document due by the end of the year. While certainly the timelines are short when you consider the complexity of the task, they are reasonable given the lengthy delays in getting the panel in place. Ajax and Picker- ing residents have been more than patient to this point in waiting for answers. The review comes as many Ontarians begin to wonder whether or not the delays will contribute to blackouts this summer. The Province had been counting on Pickering to pro- vide some much-needed relief to the grid in time for peak pe- riods, but with latest estimates putting the first reactor back online by August at the earliest, the worst may still be ahead. Hopefully the most important thing that will come from the whole exercise is a little soothing for a public confidence that has been shaken too much the last six or seven years. Following the reports that forced the shutdown in 1997 of the four units, which were operated by the former Ontario Hydro, Ontario Power Generation has taken extensive steps in Pickering, Ajax and across Durham Region to rebuild trust in the plant. Committees made up of local residents, regular education and information sessions, and community relations have all been used to remind people of the viable, long-term role nuclear energy has to play in meeting our energy de- mands. Yet, with each passing month, and the announcement of further delays and more millions added to the price tag, old, and new, fears arise. OPG has continued to stress safety is its driving force in restarting the reactors, but questions remain. It's up to the panel to determine if due diligence is in fact en- tirely behind the delays and extra costs, or if there are other factors that need to be addressed and lessons to be learned. The community's waiting -- and expecting answers. City, Province can work together A little teamwork went a long way this week in Pickering. Just when it seemed like provincial and City officials may never see eye to eye again on an issue, the two managed to pull off a partnership with a private com- pany that has the potential to change the face of Pickering's commuter corridor, not to men- tion its downtown core. A pedestrian bridge over Hwy. 401, connecting the GO Station to the Pickering Town Centre, has been long in the offing. For more than seven years, there has been talk of the project. This week, Premier Ernie Eves listed the Pickering bridge in his list of transit initiatives totalling $650 million and rolling out from the Ontario Smart Growth Panel's recommendations for ways to combat gridlock. With provincial funding now fully committed, the dream of being able to walk over the 401 is one big step towards becoming a reality. Just imagine the possibilities. Pickering Town Centre employ- ees from across the region could leave their cars at home. Shop- ping in Pickering would no longer require a car, just a GO Train ticket and a stroll over the 401. Currently, the busy roadway and lack of sidewalks in some areas makes it a treacherous and awk- ward journey from the station to the centre. Think of how attractive a pedestrian bridge would be to the businesses City officials are hop- ing to lure as part of its down- town redevelopment plan. Infill- ing and intensification along Pickering Parkway are among its key initiatives. If you build it, they will come -- an overused phrase today, but appropriate in this case. Companies have moved out of the core, or rethought coming to it altogether because there is cur- rently no direct link to the GO station for its employees. More than anything, the idea sounds 'neat' too. Its construc- tion is bound to attract the atten- tion of the thousands of people who will drive under it every day. What a progressive stamp to put on the face of Pickering. It's encouraging to hear Re- g ional Councillor Maurice Bren- ner declare this week's announce- ment "had nothing to do with pol- itics" but was rather a real team effort. Local MPP Janet Ecker worked "really hard" to help make the proposal come to fruition. That this comes from one of council's strongest critics on how the Province has handled matters in north Pickering recently, is en- couraging. Now, if only Seaton could be planned under the same spirit of congeniality. I recently attended the school's pro- duction of Les Miserables. It was fan- tastic and very entertaining. I was amazed at the professionalism and tal- ent of these teenagers. Not only did they sing and act and dance their hearts out, but they organized all the production committees that go along with staging such a Broadway-level play. I was so impressed. One night like that doesn't happen overnight. It takes months of practis- ing, patience and extra time -- long after the bell rings -- on the part of the students and the teachers in the back- ground. When the students got a standing ovation at the end, you should have seen the beam and pride on the teach- ers' faces in the back. And we thought teachers didn't do extracurriculars anymore. Not! When we treat teachers as profes- sionals, it's amazing what they can bring out of our children. Bravo teach- ers. I salute you and your prodigies for your extra hard work. Pickering readies for battle Council says city's off-limits to potential landfill sites BByy LLeesslleeyy BBoovviiee Staff Writer PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG –––– Don't even think about it. That's what local coun- cillors are saying to the On- tario Ministry of Environ- ment (MOE) amid con- cerns the search for waste disposal options may open up a temporary landfill in north Pickering. "If council doesn't see the risk there -- and I think they do -- we'd be blind- sided," said Ward 1 Region- al Councillor Maurice Brenner at Monday's coun- cil meeting. "All the ingredients are there," he said, adding talk among GTA politicians is there is a waste "crisis looming". Durham and Toronto's garbage is currently being shipped to Michigan, but a few weeks ago a mad cow disease scare closed the border to trucks temporar- ily. While those delivery lines were soon re-estab- lished, Coun. Brenner ar- gued it points to a need to find a temporary site for fu- ture potential border clos- ings. Adams Mine in Kirkland Lake is currently being considered as that spot, but it has been reported lands abutting that poten- tial future landfill were re- cently purchased by one of the same developers who is part of the Seaton land swap, said Coun. Brenner. At the same time, the Province now has land use control over the 'EE11' site in north Pickering thanks to the recent ministerial zoning order, he said. Located in the Lam- oureaux neighbourhood, EE11 was one of three loca- tions the NDP govern- ment's Interim Waste Au- thority (IWA) recommend- ed to house a mega-dump in 1992. Vehemently op- posed by local environmen- tal groups, the suggestion was abandoned when the Conservatives came into power in 1995 and disband- ed the IWA. Not only is the site partly excavated, but it also sits close to local rail lines for haulage, Coun. Brenner said. But the decision of where to put one's garbage is up to the individual mu- nicipality, said MOE spokesman John Steele. The ministry's role is that of "ensuring environmental requirements are met". Pickering has a long his- tory of resolutions against hosting a landfill, said Wa rd 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson Monday night. From that alone, there should be no ques- tion on the part of Toronto or Durham about how the municipality feels on the issue, the regional works chairman said. "I don't disagree with (this motion) -- just some of the sky-is-falling where- as (clauses)," he said. Durham declared 10 years ago there would be no new landfill sites locally, Coun. Johnson pointed out. “I wouldn't think a land- f ill would be consistent with development either," said Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles, pointing to Seaton's close proximity to the EE11 site. "But given recent events, it seems anything is possi- ble," he said, referring to the minister's order. DDAAVVIIDD PPIICCKKLLEESS ‘Seems anything is possible.’ Our kids are our future and we want to help make it bright! ✩ For further information on Community Newspapers in Education call: Metroland Durham Editor-in-Chief Joanne Burghardt 905-579-4400 News Advertiser Tony Doyle, managing editor 905-683-5110 A/P PAGE 12 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, June 8, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Writing an exam can be an extremely stressful experience because it reflects not only the knowledge and understanding that you have acquired over a period of time, but also your ability to perform under pressure. Given that a large percentage of a f inal grade is often obtained from an examination score, it is important to prepare thoroughly for exams and to remain clam as you write one! Here are some ideas to help you: 1. Draw up a plan of action. Determine how much time you will need to spend studying each day and determine exactly the amount of material that you can cover within that time frame. It is imperative that you do not leave everything to the last minute!!! 2. Set up a study group with a number of your classmates. Providing you can work cooperatively, a study group provides an opportunity to compare notes, discuss possible exam questions, and to test each other on subject matter. 3. Make sure that you read your class notes and the designated text book carefully and meticulously. Summarize your notes by highlighting. Summarizing and resummarizing allow you to internalize the information more effectively than simply reading the material! 4. Employ mnemonic (memory) techniques when learning information. These are designed to help you recall specific kinds of information for exam purposes. For example, the names of the Great Lakes can be learned by associating them to the acronym HOMES (for Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior). 5. Test yourself. This allows you to see the subject matter from the point of view of an examiner. For example, you can create exam-type questions (e.g. f ill-in-the-blanks, vocabulary check, etc.) that will give you the perspective of the teacher and thus help you learn the material more effectively. 6. Collect all required materials, such as pens, calculators, dictionaries, etc. the night before, so that you will not forget anything the day of the exam. 7. Get to the exam early to be in a more relaxed frame of mind and to give yourself the opportunity to review the material in your mind. Don’t get into last minute discussion with your peers--it may cause you to panic if you think you don’t remember every detail! 8. Read the directions carefully. It is important that you understand what the question wants you to do, no more no less! 9. Read the whole exam through first. Begin with the easiest questions to calm your nerves and give you confidence. 10. Keep track of time. Set target time limits for each question, using the marking scheme as a guide. Attempt to do every question, but do not linger on difficult answers. 11. Always think positively!! You can always learn from what you do incorrectly and correct it on the next exam. You can also learn how to strengthen your exam responses. Review and re-do tests and exams when they are returned to you. Editorial supplied by Grade Expectations. Proceeds from coffee purchased at Tim Hortons on Thursday could send more than 9,000 children, who could not otherwise afford it, on the camping adventure of a lifetime. All Tim Hortons locations will do- nate their entire coffee proceeds, in addition to funds raised through various Camp Day events and activ- ities, to the Children's Foundation. All children who attend a Chil- dren's Foundation camp are select- ed from within the communities where Tim Hortons stores are locat- ed. When it comes to new innovative medications, timing is everything. But compared to other developed countries, Canada’s regulatory system is one of the slowest to approve new medications. And for the Canadians who could benefit from these potential life-saving drugs, they’re often left waiting. All the while knowing that these innovative medications are available somewhere else, benefiting someone else. Canadians also need timely access to new medications. And to get that, we need to fight for swift approval times. Ajax summit helps clear the air Par ticipants out to find a cure for leukemia BByy JJaannee MMccDDoonnaalldd Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM ––––People of all ages and backgrounds not only talk the talk when it comes to fighting leukemia, they walk the walk. Diagnosed more than 11 years ago, Heidi McIsaac, 33, has been involved in both. "It's always about raising aware- ness," says Ms. McIsaac, just out of hospital after a three-month stay. "Last year, I wasn't able to be at the walk but I hope, if all goes well, I will be at the walk June 8 and I have a number of friends and family mem- bers who will be walking in my hon- our." She wants people to be aware of the need to create a bone-marrow reg istry. "Not enough people are aware of the need for bone marrow, as well as blood products, in order to sustain us through our therapy," says Ms. McIsaac, adding how she has had to "be strong and keep fighting" throughout her own treatment. That's not always easy to do. But with the help and support from fami- ly and friends, she says she receives the "strength and love" to keep going. She and her husband have one daughter and she is stepmother to four more daughters. "It's difficult for all of us," says Ms. McIsaac. Jackie Robinson knows all about that. Her five-year-old son Ryan was diagnosed in December 1999 with ALL (Acute lymphoblastic leukemia). His three years of chemotherapy finished this past New Year's Eve. ALL is the most common type of childhood cancer. Approximately 75 percent of children with leukemia have ALL, a disease that causes the body to produce too many immature white cells, crowding out healthy white cells (which fight infection), red cells (which carry oxygen to all parts of the body) and platelets (which stop bleeding by forming clots). The main form of treatment for ALL is chemotherapy - the use of var- ious drugs to try to destroy all cancer cells as quickly as possible. "So far, so good," says the 42-year- old mom. "At Sick Kids (Toronto Hospital for Sick Children) you never lie, you just explain (to Ryan) how he had bad guys in his blood and now they're all gone." Mrs. Robinson chairs the walk but she and her husband, daughter, Ryan, extended family members and the family dog plan to walk. It will take time - until December 2004 - be- fore doctors can be sure Ryan is in re- mission. Two separate events have merged into one for the upcoming walk. For more than a quarter of a century, funds raised locally for leukemia re- search were done by swimming at the annual 'Jim's Swim.' Two years ago on the 25th anniversary of the swim, it was announced that close to $350,000 had been raised over the years. It's dry land for the fund-raisers now. Local participants have joined forces with members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, which has raised money by sponsoring such walks for 14 years. "'The Walk for a Cure' is the 14th Annual UFCW sponsored walk," ex- plains Gail Forbes, executive director, Eastern Ontario Region, Leukemia Research Fund of Canada. "When we rethought the 'Jim Swim' and became an activity outside, we were invited to amalgamate both events. Last year was the first walk in memory of Jim Kinlin." The 2002 walk raised $23,000, which organizers hope to double June 8. "Ryan always asks how many peo- ple he's going to walk for," says Mrs. Robinson. "He says, 'This walk is helping me, mommy, and all my friends at Sick Kids.' There's an 80 per cent cure for kids with leukemia so on your bad days, you go with the numbers. That's what gives you the strength. And the kids are amazing. These little guys take it all and some- times Ryan asks, 'What happens when the bad guys come back?'" For Hannah Silk, 12, the bad guys are long gone. Diagnosed with ALL when she was five, three years of chemotherapy treatment was suc- cessful. Today she continues to be in remission and often speaks to groups about her battle with leukemia. "I did not relapse and am a cancer survivor," she says. "Without the re- search that has happened before my lifetime I do not know where I would have been right now." The walk begins with registrations at 10 a.m., at Heydenshore Park Pavilion, Whitby. Pledge forms are available online at www.leukemia.ca. See page 16 Bar set high for hurdler Felicien Pickering athlete out to make school history PPIICC KKEERRIINN GG ----A Pickering Olympian is hoping to add an- other championship to her im- pressive track portfolio when she competes at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, California. Perdita Felicien, a senior at the University of Illinois, will at- tempt to retain her 100-metre hurdles crown at the U.S. na- tional collegiate showcase June 11 to 14. Back-to-back national outdoor titles would make Feli- cien only the second athlete in the school's history to record the feat, joining Tonya Williams who won the 400m hurdles ti- tles in 1995 and 1996. A win would also give the Pine Ridge Secondary School g raduate her third career na- tional title and make her the most decorated Illinois athlete in the school's history. "I think Perdita is ready to run a fast time," said her Illinois coach Gary Winckler in a story that appeared on the school's athletic Web site. "She's running technically sound races, even better than she was running two years ago when she ran 12 .73. I think we will see her run a very fast time in Sacramento, if not win the race." In order to advance to the NCAA championships, Felicien had to qualify at the NCAA Mideast Regional Champi- onships in Columbus, Ohio last weekend. There, competing under ex- tremely windy conditions, she blew by chief rivals, Louisiana State University's Lolo Jones and Indiana University's Danielle Carruthers, to capture the event. "I had one of my best starts of the season and the first five hurdles went great," Felicien told the Web site. "Once I cleared the fifth hurdle I could hear a lot of noise behind me and it was someone hitting the hurdles and falling down. Once I accelerated, I could feel each hurdle come up on me a little quickly and that's because of the strong wind behind us. It was almost ridiculous how fast it was blowing, but that's why I love training at Illinois. We get wind like this every day at prac- tice, so this was nothing new to me. I actually hit the seventh hurdle pretty hard, but I just re- gained my balance, cleared the last hurdle and crossed the fin- ish line. I know hitting that hur- dle cost me some time, but a win is a win. After the race, I looked back and saw a couple of people on the ground and hur- dles all over the place. This is a tough race." The 100m hurdles won't be Felicien's only event at the na- tionals. She'll also compete as a member of Illinois' 4-x-100m women's relay team. The team received an at-large bid to the nationals, the second pick among the eight schools to re- ceive bids to the event. Illinois' relay team of Felicien, Chequetta Bearfield, Nicole Whitman and Shanna Pickett f inished second at the Big Ten Conference Championships last month. Photo courtesy of Illinois Sports Information Department Pickering Olympian Perdita Felicien will attempt to capture back-to-back 100-metre hurdles crowns at the NCAA Out- door Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, California next week. A win there would represent her third na- tional title while attending the University of Illinois on an athletic scholarship. PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ---- Perdita Felicien has been an incredible com- petitor on the track and now she can say she's also a winner in the classroom, too. Felicien was named to the Verizon Academic All-District V University Division Women's Track Team, one of only 20 athletes to be named to either the first or second teams. District V encompasses Illi- nois, Indiana, Minnesota, Wis- consin, Manitoba and On- tario. In addition to being a two- time NCAA champion, eight- time all-American and a four- time Big Ten Conference champion, Felicien has also excelled academically, boast- ing a 3.265 grade-point aver- age in kinesiology. With her first-team honour, Felicien is eligible for Verizon Academic All-America hon- ours. •••••• Felicien was also named the Mondo Midwestern Regional and District Athlete of the Year and is one of four final- ists for National Female Track Athlete of the Year. She won this same district award during the 2001 outdoor season, the same year she went on to win the National Female Track Athlete of the Year. Sports Briefs JUNE 8, 2003 Flying Finn's at it again AAJJAAXX ---- Pickering High School ath- letes had a field day at the recent OFSAA Central Region Track and Field Championships in Toronto. All told, the Trojans team qualified 18 athletes to represent the school at the Ontario Federation of School Ath- letic Associations (OFSAA) champi- onships, which concluded yesterday (Saturday) in St. Catharines. As well, the Trojans topped the team standings, scoring 210.5 points. Individually, Ryan Finn led the way with two gold medals, while also recording the top high school time in Canada in the 800 metres in a clocking of 1:55.10. He also won the 1,500m in 4:04.20, a personal best and the sec- ond best high school time in the coun- try. Ryan Gordon was also a double- gold medallist, winning the 100m hur- dles and the triple jump in the junior boys' bracket. Meanwhile, Jason Jordon posted the fastest senior boys' 200m time in the province with a clocking of 22.10. He also won the 100m. The highlight of the day came in the last event, played out in the pour- ing rain, as the senior boys' 4-x-400m relay team of Christopher Middleton- Russea, Finn, Stephen Lopez, and Jor- dan crossed the finish line in a time of 3:27.6, tops in the province to date. All didn't go as planned, however, as a couple of key team members went down with injuries. In the junior boys' category, Aaron Bramwell-Cole and Anthony Lue, along with Sephton Spence in the midget boys' division, were forced to withdraw. Bramwell- Cole had an outstanding season, post- ing some of the province's top 100m and 200m times. Prince puts crowning glory on great meet AAJJAAXX ----An Ajax youngster made fast tracks en route to gold at a track and field meet in Markham recently. Nichelle Prince, of Ajax, joined her Bramalea Bullets at the Markham Invi- tational track meet, taking home sever- al medals while also shattering a provincial record in the process. Competing in the mite girls' divi- sion, the eight-year-old broke the On- tario record in her age group in the 100 metres, winning in a time of 14.8 seconds. The previous standard was 15.1 seconds, set in 1976. She also won the 200m in a time of 33.5 seconds and earned gold in the long jump and as the anchor runner in the Bramalea club's co-ed medley relay team. During the indoor track season, Prince established records in the 50m in a time of 8.1 seconds and in the 60m in a time of 9.33 seconds. Her next major track and field events are the Hershey finals and the MTA championships, both to be held later this month. You can also get a bite to eat while you’re there. Tournaments are welcome and gas carts are available. Golf Hints:Ademanding shot is required in a successful approach to this green. Depending on the location of the pin, club selection and ball flight will be the main priorities. A back left pin placement requires a soft draw with precise distance control to hold the green. A pin placement on the right demands a high fade to give the ultimate chance to knock it tight. The Trany creates the different ratios for speed and power. This is done by applying different combinations of clutch- es and or bands, by means of hydraulic pressure. A certain volume of trany fluid should flow from the oil pan through the filter, to the pump. Pump builds up pres- sure, which in turn, is directed to the appropriate clutch or band. Lower than specified fluid pressure, will result in clutch slippage, which causes clutch friction discs wear. Wearing clutch- es leave their dust suspended in the fluid, which flows back to the oil pan. Fluid cycle is: From oil pan, through the filter, to pump, to clutch packs, then back to the oil pan. The FILTER picks up dust particles released from clutch discs, and any other form of dirt caused by wearing parts. A partially plugged filter will reduce the volume flow to the pump resulting in starvation, causing lower and lower pres- sure, consequently more slippage and more dust. More dust will plug the filter more and more and cause major trany failure. Avoid having major trany failure!!! Have your car trany serviced now!!! Bring this article and save $20.00* *off regular price.
