Double-murder suspect found dead in hotel room following standoff
DURHAM ––A double-murder
suspect with connections to
Durham Region was found dead
after police cornered him in a Scar-
borough hotel.
The body of Joseph Braga Pri-
eto, 31, was discovered Wednesday
in a hotel room at Warden Avenue
and Hwy. 401, after a 12-hour
standoff, said police, who launched
a GTA-wide manhunt for the sus-
pect last Friday.
Police had been checking vari-
ous locations in Durham, including
an Oshawa address, earlier in the
week searching for Mr. Prieto,
named on a warrant in relation to a
triple shooting that left two men
dead in Mississauga. Mr. Prieto was
tracked to the hotel early Wednes-
day and several hours after being
contacted by a negotiator, was
found dead in an apparent suicide.
The Toronto man, who was con-
victed in 2001 in Whitby for as-
saulting a Durham constable and
taking his pistol during a violent
1997 struggle in Ajax, faced two
counts of first-degree murder and
one count of attempted murder.

Durham Region students are all figured out
Local boards among
first to meet pupil number
requirement
BY MIKE RUTA
Staff Writer
DURHAM —If you’re a local
student, Durham’s school boards
have your number.
The region’s school boards are
among the first in the province to
have the Ministry of Education’s new
Ontario education number (OEN) as-
signed to students, said Laura Elliott,
the Durham District School Board’s
technical and information services
superintendent.
Ms. Elliott explained the nine-
digit number would be randomly as-
signed to existing students and all
kindergarten students when they
enter the system.
The number is linked to unchang-
ing information about the student
such as name, gender and date of
birth, and will remain with the stu-
dent through their elementary and
secondary years.
“The OEN will make it possible to
keep more accurate records on the
movement and progress of individual
students through elementary and sec-
ondary school, while also protecting
their privacy,” she states in a report.
“It will greatly facilitate the collec-
tion and analysis of accurate and
timely data about education statistics,
patterns and trends in Ontario.”
The board submitted the names of
all of its active students so they could
receive numbers.
Of the 68,170 OENs requested
from the ministry, Ms. Elliott in her
report says 67,144 have been as-
signed.
In 923 cases, she noted “the stu-
dent could not be uniquely identified
against all the other records in the
OEN database.”
In an interview she explained
there are five indicators associated
with the student. And in the case of
identical twins, for example, they
might have the same birth date, last
name and gender.
“If any three of the five come up
similar to another student, we need
our staff to go in and do some verifi-
cation,” said Ms. Elliott.
The remaining 103 cases were re-
turned to the board as a result of “bad
or corrupt data”.
To save local school staff the job
of assigning numbers and verifying
them, and since there will eventually
be hundreds of thousands of names in
the OEN database, she said “we have
decided as a system to assign the
numbers from a central perspective.”
Otherwise, Ms. Elliott said, the board
would have to train and work with all
school secretaries.
She said there would be a
cost to the board in terms of
staff time, but Ms. Elliott did
not have an estimate.
Neither did Grant Andrews,
education director of the
Durham Catholic District
School Board, who agreed,
“the prime cost is time.
“It’s just one of those things
we have to do, so what’s the
point of costing it out?” he
reasoned in an interview.
Unlike the public board, he
said the education number pro-
ject would be implemented at
the school level. Mr. Andrews
said it would take “a consider-
able amount of time” to train
staff.
“We’re actually scheduling
training sessions for elemen-
tary staff in February and in
March for secondary staff,” he
said.
Mr. Andrews said principals
have been asked “to provide
information to parents and
guardians through their school
newsletters” about the OEN.

Disparaging remarks
led to fracas involving
Ajax resident
BY STEPHEN SHAW
Staff Writer
DURHAM ––An Ajax man
charged in the beating of an Oshawa
resident, found face down on a drive-
way near death, has been sentenced to
a day in jail plus time served in pre-
trial custody.
David Theodore Jones, 24, of Lan-
caster Lane (formerly Waverly Street,
Oshawa), spent 142 days in custody
following his arrest last August.
Mr. Jones and another man were
charged with aggravated assault after
51-year-old Alan Spiers was found un-
conscious on a Gibb Street driveway,
badly injured and bleeding from the
head about 9 p.m. Aug. 5.
Court heard Mr. Spiers, Mr. Jones
and a third man had been drinking in
the home when disparaging remarks
were made about a mutual friend, the
owner of the house, who wasn’t home
at the time.
Mr. Spiers was told to leave and an
argument broke out which led to a
fight, court heard. During the fracas,
Mr. Spiers fell down.
Mr. Jones pleaded not guilty to ag-
gravated assault but guilty of the lesser
offence of common assault. He also
pleaded guilty to obstructing police for
lying to Homicide Detective Rolf
Kluem during the investigation.
Police said Mr. Spiers, of Hillcrest
Drive, Oshawa, had been virtually left
for dead on the pavement with serious
brain and other internal injuries.
But it was unclear what injuries
were caused by the assault and what
injuries were caused from an apparent
fall down the porch outside the home.
The divorced father of two re-
mained in Sunnybrook Health Sci-
ences Centre comatose on life support
for two weeks, before his condition
improved.
Detective J. J. Allan said Mr. Spiers
is “doing well” and undergoing reha-
bilitation.
“He almost died. The bottom line is
he’s come out of it and made a good
recovery,” said Det. Allan, adding Mr.
Spiers has no memory of the incident.
Judge Ray Taillon, of the Ontario
Court of Justice, Oshawa placed Mr.
Jones on probation for one year, or-
dered him not to possess any firearms
or explosives for five years and to sub-
mit a DNA sample to the national reg-
istry.
Peter MacVicar, 28, of no fixed ad-
dress, remains before the court.

Rouge Valley Health System deficit leads to job cuts
Hospital officials ‘going
to have to be creative’
BY LESLEY BOVIE
Staff Writer
DURHAM —Job cuts are on
the way for the Rouge Valley Health
System in the wake of an $18-mil-
lion operating deficit.
“I can say the hospital will still
be accessible to the community,”
said president and chief executive
officer Hume Martin. “But we may
try to provide some services with
fewer staff. That’s the only way to
create savings.”
“We’re going to have to be cre-
ative.”
Staff at the Rouge Valley Health
System’s (RVHS) two sites, in Scar-
borough and Ajax, were told this
week of the changes as part of a fi-
nancial and services agreement with
the Ontario Ministry of Health and
Long Term Care to address the
deficit.The agreement deals with
three areas of potential cost savings
— reducing overhead, administra-
tion and operational expenses, find-
ing clinical efficiencies, and “role
changes”, said Mr. Martin.
The latter is already under way,
he said. RVHS, which delivers eight
clinical programs across its two
sites, has now consolidated them
down to five by combining women
and children services, medicine and
emergency services, and surgical
and cardiac services.
As a result, three program lead-
ers or administration staff “have left
the organization”, said hospital
spokesman Katie Cronin-Wood.
RVHS began several “staffing pro-
jects” before Christmas incorporat-
ing several “job changes”, she said.
Those issues are still being worked
out.
“A ny job loss we hope to mini-
mize through early retirements and
natural attrition (such as) people
who decide to leave on their own,
which happens all the time,” she
said, although she could not give a
specific figure on the number of job
reductions.
Mr. Martin said RVHS has a
three to four per cent “turnover”
each year due to retirements and at-
trition. “That’s one of the things. We
hope all our staff are treated fairly,”
he added.
RVHS is one of more than 100
hospitals in Ontario forecasting a
deficit for the end of this fiscal year
on March 31, said Mr. Martin. It car-
ried over a $16-million deficit from
last year. Both are due to additional
services, which were added at the
hospital to respond to growth, said
Mr. Martin.
The Province announced in No-
vember plans to bail out hospital
deficits with a $350-million funding
program but the president and CEO
said he’s still unsure how much
RVHS will receive.
“We cannot sustain that type of
deficit and go forward,” said Mr.
Martin.
He said he’s confident RVHS can
achieve all the savings its needs with
the financial and services agree-
ment. It needs to be fully in place by
Feb. 28, during which time all hos-
pitals must submit their business
plans to the Province.
“I think we’re being innovative in
this approach,” he said. “We’re not
being confrontational. We’re being
realistic.”
Ministry spokesman Paul Cantin
said his office is looking forward to
seeing the hospital’s results. RVHS
is not the only hospital to submit
such an agreement, but it’s an ap-
proach the ministry definitely en-
courages, he said.
Air 1 follows fleeing motorist to Ajax
DURHAM ––An Oshawa man
was arrested after crashing into a
hydro pole in Ajax while being pur-
sued from the air by Durham’s police
helicopter.
A high-speed car chase on the
ground had been called off several
minutes earlier due to public safety
concerns, Durham Regional Police
said.
The incident began around 8 p.m.
Wednesday, with a 911 call reporting
a suspicious vehicle in Courtice.
Officers then spotted the car about
9 p.m. in northeast Oshawa and the
driver fled at a high rate of speed,
with patrol officers in pursuit, police
said.
Police called off the ground chase
and the police chopper, Air 1, fol-
lowed the car west on Taunton Road
to Ajax and south on Westney Road.
Heading west on Kingston Road
the vehicle blew a red light, struck
another car at Church Street and spun
out into a hydro pole, police said.
No one was seriously hurt and the
driver was arrested at the scene.
Glen Ville Decaries, 24,
of Ridge Valley Drive,
faces charges of flight from
police, dangerous driving,
possession of marijuana,
breach of probation, breach
of bail conditions and ob-
struct police.
He was held for a bail
hearing.

of deficit and go forward.’

the backyard when she had a heart attack
and died — no warning, no suffering. It
was a terrible shock and loss for all who
knew and loved her for the seven years she
was here.
I had rescued her from deplorable con-
ditions when she was a year-old pup. All
she ever demanded was love and affection
and she received plenty of it.
When you adopt an animal that has no
future, every year that you have them is an
added bonus. There are hundreds of dogs
and cats sitting behind bars in shelters all
around the country. Instead of grieving for
months or years over the loss of your pet,
give one of the unfortunate ones a chance
for happiness. It is very rewarding.

PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER JANUARY 10, 2003
The Kyoto Protocol has once
again embroiled Canadians in a de-
bate where the facts are less than
clear. The only apparent common
ground in the debate is we would all
like to breathe cleaner air. After that
concession, opinions diverge. The
federal government says the effects
of compliance with the protocol are
both necessary and minimal. Some
provincial premiers and business
leaders say the protocol is unneces-
sary and potentially damaging to the
economy.
The problem for the average
Canadian is where to access unbi-
ased information to permit informed
decisions. It seems people being
widely quoted in the popular media
have affiliations with organizations
that have a vested interest in any out-
come. Worse still is that at times it
appears to be merely an exercise in
politics.
What seems to be lacking is a
common-sense approach to the prob-
lem. We are obviously exhausting
the non-renewable resources of our
planet. They may not run out in my
lifetime, but my children will cer-
tainly have to cope with a reduced
inventory of irreplaceable energy.
Why have governments not shown
leadership by offering incentives to
those who generate energy from
wind, water or sunlight? Why have
there not been gradual disincentives
to the purchase of high-energy items,
to reflect their true cost? This cost
includes energy consumed in manu-
facture, as well as emissions gener-
ated.
People must accept that consum-
ing alternative energy is inevitable.
Our society is either going to have to
become more dependent on renew-
able energy, or to consume much
less that we currently do.
I consider the recent energy
shortages in California, as well as
the current state of Ontario’s electri-
cal system, a wake-up call. We live
in an age that only has vision for
large-scale energy generation. I
often wonder how much less de-
mand there would be for nuclear or
coal-generated power, if every house
or factory had one wind generator.
The new millennium presents us
with challenges, none of which were
unpredictable. Leaders of vision
would have started us down the road
to energy self-sufficiency, and envi-
ronmental responsibility. Fortunate-
ly, our circumstances are not yet cat-
astrophic.
Change begins simply by saying,
“I want cleaner air”, and following
that up with a letter to the people
elected to make those decisions on
our behalf. Kyoto may or may not be
the right path to achieve that result,
but it is definitely the right place to
start the debate.

Ky oto may not be answer but it’s a good start
More good things are going to happen around the French-
man’s Bay area in 2003.
The ongoing Frenchman’s Bay Watershed Rehabilitation Pro-
ject, which came about as part of a task force struck by Mayor
Wa yne Arthurs in 1998, has taken on projects big and small in the
last five years to transform lands around the bay, as well as the
local streams that feed it.
Coinciding these last five years with the community-based ef-
forts of the watershed rehabilitation project are the redevelop-
ment of the East Shore community at the foot of Liverpool Road,
waterfront trail improvements and a new bridge on the west side
of the bay.
The results thus far are far more inviting and people-friendly
areas on both sides of the bay. Credit for many other, less visible
efforts must go to the volunteers of the watershed rehabilitation
project, who have focused more on promoting a healthier ecosys-
tem in and around Frenchman’s Bay. As well, there have been im-
pressive efforts at preserving wildlife habitat, cleaning up years
of accumulated debris, promoting naturalization and saving local
woodlots.
This collaborative approach to revitalizing Frenchman’s Bay
and the surrounding environs has demonstrated the gains that can
be made when motivated citizens and political leadership work in
tandem.
Pickering must continue to assist in ensuring the long-term
success of the effort. It must help marshal resources, provide av-
enues to pursue in terms of necessary public funding and contin-
ue to take the lead in its march towards a healthy Frenchman’s
Bay.
The City has already spent millions sprucing up the waterfront
and is committed to ongoing improvements on both sides of the
bay. But, continued recognition of the importance of the sur-
rounding watershed is what will ensure the success of the project.
The many citizens in the community who have volunteered
their time on bay projects in the belief they can make a difference
surely illustrate that the survival and revitalization of French-
man’s Bay are important to every resident in the community.
More work lies ahead, but the City and the civic-minded peo-
ple who have done so much for the watershed in recent years have
both the means and the motivation to complete the project in the
future.
It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.
Future continues to
look bright for
Frenchman’s Bay
Watershed project’s plans will continue
steady improvements to the important area

Durham
schools
at top of
the class
BY MIKE RUTA
Staff Writer
DURHAM —Durham public
schools as a whole received straight
‘A’s in the most recent school facilities
survey.
The Province requires principals,
teachers, non-teaching staff members,
students and school council members
to rate their schools in the areas of
cleanliness, condition of the buildings
and property, comfort, access and
school partnerships.
Jack Massie, the Durham District
School Board’s facilities services su-
perintendent, in a report on Monday’s
standing committee agenda presented
the results of the third such survey. He
explained schools report their results
directly to the Education Ministry, not
to the board.
“Our number of schools responding
is 76.9 per cent, or 91 of the schools,”
he told trustees. “That’s down slightly
from 82 per cent (in 2001).”
Mr. Massie’s report states the ag-
gregate response shows 97 per cent of
respondents in the cleanliness catego-
ry said their schools are maintained in
satisfactory or better condition. That’s
slightly lower than last year’s 98 per
cent rating.
In looking at the condition of
school buildings and grounds, 96 per
cent of the stakeholders rated their fa-
cilities as in satisfactory or better con-
dition, again a bit lower than the 2001,
97 per cent figure.
The other three categories showed
no changes from last year.
The same number of respondents,
93 per cent, rated the comfort level in
their school, including heat and air
quality, as satisfactory or higher.
And as last year’s survey shows, 91
per cent of respondents judged acces-
sibility and property to be at least sat-
isfactory.
In describing how groups within
the school work together, 95 per cent,
as in 2001, rated partnerships as satis-
factory to excellent.
Mr. Massie noted not all stakehold-
ers at every facility took part in the
survey.
“I think there were some people
who did not want to participate for po-
litical reasons,” he told trustees.
Asked in an interview if he was re-
ferring to teachers, and in particular
elementary educators, he replied,
“more or less, yes”.
Rachel Gencey, president of the
Durham unit of the Elementary Teach-
ers’ Federation of Ontario, in an inter-
view said she didn’t recall any direc-
tive to local teachers, from either the
provincial or local ETFO office, advis-
ing members not to take part in the
survey.
“I would agree it wouldn’t be ap-
propriate (to participate),” she said.
“It’s commenting on the work of other
employee groups.”
Ms. Gencey said it would be akin to
asking custodians to rate teachers at
their schools.
Individual school ratings are to be
posted at http://sfis.edu.gov.on.ca.

Bright future ahead
for Frenchman’s Bay
Rehabilitation
management group
has big plans for
area in 2003
BY LESLEY BOVIE
Staff Writer
PICKERING —It’s full
steam ahead for the French-
man’s Bay Watershed Rehabil-
itation Project.
And co-ordinator Angela
Porteous is hoping a few more
passengers get on along the
way.
“We’re always looking for
new people,” she said. “We’re
hoping to attract high school
students who need the 40 hours
of volunteer service to gradu-
ate this year.”
The project enters a new
phase this year. With funding
from Environment Canada’s
EcoAction grant coming to an
end in September, the group
has applied for a Trillium
Foundation grant, which it
hopes will take the project into
2007.
Members interested in get-
ting involved are invited to at-
tend a planning advisory com-
mittee meeting Wednesday,
Jan. 15 from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m.
at the East Shore Community
Centre.
Rehabilitation of the
Frenchman’s Bay watershed
began in 1998 after a call from
the mayor’s task force to main-
tain and preserve the City’s
natural resources, said Ms.
Porteous.
Since then, the group has
done everything from garbage
cleanups to planting and moni-
toring along the watershed,
which runs roughly from
Whites Road on the west to
Squires Beach Road in the east
and as far north as Concession
7.
“We’re going to move ahead
with our stream management,”
said Ms. Porteous. “We’re
going to look at the four
streams in the watershed and
some of the area’s woodlots.”
The group hosts a woodlot
workshop Monday, Feb. 3 from
7 to 8 p.m. at the Pickering Nu-
clear Information Centre to
discuss the first woodlot of
focus, behind the East Shore
Community Centre.
“I really want some input
from the people who utilize the
area before we go ahead,” said
Ms. Porteous. “I have ideas but
nothing carved in stone.”
She’d like to see additional
plantings in the open grassy
area in front of the woodlot as
well as some bird boxes and
controls for endangered
species.
Ms. Porteous promises a
number of outdoor events and
programs delivered over the
next four years, including com-
munity park naturalizations
and information seminars on
biodegradable products and al-
ternative energy.
With the Ontario Power
Generation wind turbine locat-
ed in the watershed, it’s a great
opportunity to learn more
about wind turbine energy, she
said. For more information
about upcoming meetings and
events, call Ms. Porteous at
905-420-4660, ext. 2212.
New or expanded woodlots in areas surrounding French-
man’s Bay are on a local group’s agenda in 2003 as work to
improve the watershed area. The Frenchman’s Bay Water-
shed Rehabilitation Project is hosting a workshop on tree
plantings Feb. 3, with other meetings also scheduled. The
woodlot surrounding the Ontario Power Generation wind
turbine east of the bay illustrates the importance of natural
windbreaks to encourage a healthy ecosystem in the water-

DURHAM —Local schools
will get “at least” $5,000 in fed-
eral government funding target-
ed for tree planting in barren
Ontario schoolyards.
In an interview, Wendy Lee,
executive director of Environ-
mental Earth Angels (EEA),
said the registered charity and
non-profit organization esti-
mates six Durham schools will
receive trees for students to
plant during the week of April
28.
The group received a total of
$24,000 in federal money an-
nounced Jan. 7 by David Ander-
son, Canada’s minister of the
environment. The money is to
be split between Durham, York
and Peel regions and Toronto.
The government committed
$1.9 million for 53 environmen-
tal projects in Canadian com-
munities.
“Durham is our expansion
area; we started working with
the schools in Durham about
two years ago and we keep in-
creasing the number of schools
we work with there,” said Ms.
Lee.
She said schools that wish to
obtain trees must submit a tree
plan to EEA, including informa-
tion such as where and what
species of tree they would like
to plant. A list of successful ap-
plicants is to be released in
March.
“The students will be in-
volved in all aspects of the
planting activities and will be
encouraged to take ownership
of ‘their’ trees,” states an Envi-
ronment Canada press release.
EEA’s educational tree plant-
ing program utilizes the funding
to help more than 32,000 stu-
dents plant 400 mature trees.
According to the EEA Web
site, over the last eight years the
organization’s programs have
provided and resulted in the
planting of more than 3,500
large, indigenous trees by stu-
dents in southern Ontario
schoolyards.

416-494-7653 $274,900Don’t be caught on thin ice this winter: Ajax firefighters
AJAX —There’s nothing
more Canadian than lacing on the
blades and going skating on a
frozen pond.
But, the recent snowfall
shouldn’t be seen as proof ponds
and creeks are safe for skating or
walking, said Ajax Fire Chief
Randy Wilson.
“It’s very difficult to tell when
moving water is safely frozen,
and anyone who ventures out
onto our local creeks or ponds is
at a high risk of falling through,”
Chief Wilson stated. “So far this
winter, there haven’t been any re-
ported emergencies in Ajax.
“We have teams trained in
cold weather and ice rescue, but
I’d rather they not have to use
that expertise.”
The bottom line is if you enjoy
skating, move it inside, the chief
said.
Recreational skating and shin-
ny are offered throughout the
winter at the Ajax Community
Centre and Village Arena. Sched-
ules are available at community
centres, in the winter recreation
services booklet, and online at
www.townofajax.com/parks.
“The fee of a dollar or two per
person to skate at our public are-
nas is a small price to pay to en-
sure the safety of our families,”
Chief Wilson said.
Should you see someone fall
through the ice, call 911 immedi-
ately.
“Don’t go into the water after
someone. It makes it highly like-
ly that we’ll have an additional
victim to rescue — you,” Chief
Wilson stated.
“You’re better to stay in a safe
position, call 911 and offer reas-
surance by talking to the victim.
If you have a rope or can extend a
branch to offer support, that can
be helpful.”
For more information, call
Thom Evered, Ajax’s chief fire
prevention officer, at 905-683-
7791.

Hey, aren’t you...?
From pop-punk band Sum 41 to Nobel prize winner John Polanyi and former president of the Ontario Federation of Labour, Cliff Pilkey,
Durham Region is a mecca for famous faces. For the following residents, the quiet, inspirational small-town feel of our community is what
makes Durham Region the place to set down roots. Text by Carly Foster and photographs by Jason Liebregts.
JEFF BEUKEBOOM
Claim to fame:Spent 13 seasons in the
NHL, with the Edmonton Oilers and the New
Yo rk Rangers, earning four Stanley Cups. A
series of concussions cut his career short.
DOB:March 28, 1965.
Residence:Uxbridge.
Why I love Durham Region:I used to drive
through here and always liked the area. I like
the proximity to Toronto.
Kids:Three, aged 11, 10 and 5.
Admirable figure: My father. We grew up on a
dairy farm in Lindsay and he taught me
about hard work and dedication.
Last book read:‘Kiss and Make-up’ by
Gene Simmons.
If reincarnated, I’d be:Bobby Orr without
the bad knee.
Life goal:You change your goals as life
goes on. Some goals I’ve already lived, oth-
ers I’m still striving for. One was to play in the
NHL.
If I could change the world:I’d try to get rid
of all the negative thinking in general: there’s
too much of it. From my own perspective, I
try to with coaching hockey.
Fave song:Anything rock.
Fave movie:‘A Few Good Men.’ I saw the
play in New York before the movie.
Fave food:Fish and veggies.
Weakness:Jumping to conclusions.
Strength:Thinking positively, encouraging
kids to think outside the box.
I was most embarrassed when:I wiped out
in the Roxy Theatre in Uxbridge while watch-
ing ‘Lord of the Rings.’
KIM FERNANDES
Claim to fame:Creates three-dimensional il-
lustrations for kids’ books using Fimo. Has illus-
trated over a dozen books, with the first one
published when she was 18.
DOB:Sept. 4, 1969.
Residence:Port Perry.
Why I love Durham Region:I used to drive
through here when my father had art shows in
Peterborough. I met people, realized what a
nice town it was.I used to be downtown (Toron-
to) and it was too concrete and busy. I love the
hospital and lake in Port Perry and the theatre
in Port Perry.
Kids:Daughter, 7.
Admirable figure:My parents, because
they’ve done so much in the industry and I re-
spect them for what they’ve done. My grandfa-
ther is 90 and still a comic-book artist.
Last book read:‘Lucky Man’by Michael J.Fox.
If reincarnated,I’d be:A cat.I’d love to lie in the
sun and sleep all day.Or a musician because I’d
love to have that talent.
Life goal:My fist goal was to get established in
the kid’s book industry. Now I want to take
courses in writing and adult fiction.
If I could change the world:I’d wish people
would be more introspective instead of taking
their issues out on the world.
Fave song:Anything by Billy Joel or Carole
King.
Fave movie:‘Moulin Rouge.’
Fave food:Sushi.
Weakness:I’m equally hard on myself, but
people who do dumbfounding things frustrate
me. I also have a poor memory.
Strength:Sense of humour and my great pa-
tience when doing art.
I was most embarrassed when:I’m not an
‘embarrassable’ person.
WENDY LEWIS
Claim to fame:Author of teen novel, ‘Grave-
yard Girl,’ with two books due out in 2003.
DOB:Feb.10, 1966.
Residence:Uxbridge.
Why I love Durham Region:I grew up here
then moved back in 1995. I love the town, loved
high school. It’s changed so much, but it’s still a
great place for kids, beautiful and inspiring.
Kids:Tw o daughters, 6 and 4.
Admirable figure:My mother. She’s my best
friend. She’s so giving and helps out with my
kids and sister’s kids and has always been
there for us.
Last book read:‘Water Wings’ by Kristen den
Hartog.
If reincarnated, I’d be:A writer, a child prodi-
gy. I’d get started earlier. I have so many stories
inside me - I just have to find time to write
them.
Life goal:To be a good mom and see my
daughters grow up.Write some great books.
If I could change the world:I’d wish for less
violence. I’d invest in challenging games that
don’t involve shooting and killing people. Chil-
dren’s play doesn’t have to involve violence.
Fave song:Anything by Sarah McLachlan.
Fave movie:‘Moonstruck.’
Fave food:Chocolate.
Weakness:I’m too emotional.
Strength:Being aware of how other people
might feel, because I do tend to be emotional
myself.
I was most embarrassed when:I ran into a
woman I hadn’t seen in a long time, and we
started chatting away. A crew was filming ‘A
Long Kiss Goodnight’ and we didn’t notice until
someone yelled at us to move. So I’ll always be
known as the woman who held up a Geena
Davis movie.
WILLIAM (BILL) LISHMAN
Claim to fame:In 1988 he led a flock of 12
Canada geese on local flights, making or-
nithological and aviation history. He also
helped lead the first aircraft migration of 18
geese from Ontario to Virginia in 1994.The
1996 movie ‘Fly Away Home’ is based on his
achievements, and he runs Operation Migra-
tion.
DOB:Fe b.12, 1939.
Residence:Blackstock.
Why I love Durham Region:I suppose it’s
home. There are nicer places in the world, but
there are a lot worse places, too.
Kids:Tw o sons, one daughter.
Admirable figure:Antonio Gaudi, a Spanish
architect and sculptor.
Last book read:‘The Animals of a Former
Wor ld’ by John McPhee.
If reincarnated, I’d be:A crow.They’re quite
smart, fun and adaptable.
Life goal:Migrating south with whooping
cranes. There’s more planned, but they’re not
yet disclosed.
If I could change the world:I’d create a
common language for everyone.Then we
could communicate on a much better level
and it’d be a more peaceful world.
Fave song:‘The Canadian Railroad Trilogy’
by Gordon Lightfoot.
Fave movie:‘Saving Private Ryan.’
Fave food:Salmon, venison, roast beef.
Weakness:Tr ying to keep things tidy. I’m a
pack rat.
Strength:Idea as a verb. Coming up with in-
novative ideas.
I was most embarrassed when:I was a kid,
I was working for a company and had to intro-
duce my boss to a major client and forgot
both their names.

Did you know
that 22% of
Canada’s power
outages are
caused by tree
contact with
power lines?*
*Source Canadian Electricity Association 1999 Annual Service Continuity Report on Distribution System
Performance in Electrical Utilities.
You may also be interested in knowing that Veridian Connections’
record is much better than the national average. In 2002, just 4.2% of
our outages were attributed to tree interference. This is a record that
we want to continue.
That’s why, as part of our regular maintenance program, we will soon
be trimming trees located near overhead hydro lines in the City of
Pickering and the Town of Ajax. Our work will be confined to the
area bordered by Liverpool Road/Sideline 24 and 26 to the west,
Westney Road to the east, Uxbridge-Pickering Townline to the north
and Lake Ontario to the south. This work will begin on January 13th,
2003 and be completed by April 15th, 2003.
While the reliability of your electricity supply is an important
consideration when carrying out this work, we also recognize the
aesthetic value of trees. Our tree trimmers are trained arborists and
will ensure that the health of the community’s tr ees is not
compromised.
If you have any questions regarding this maintenance work, please call
us at 905-427-9870, extension 3232 or 3220.

PICKERING — Bree
Williamson is dealing with a lot
these days.
She just learned her stepfa-
ther’s in a coma, her mother’s
battling multiple personalities
and her birth father is an evil cult
leader.
And you thought you had it
bad.
But don’t shed a tear for
Williamson; life’s just grand. You
see, the Pickering native inherit-
ed all the troubles when she
signed a five-year contract to as-
sume the role of Jessica
Buchanan on the long-running
ABC daytime soap opera ‘One
Life to Live’.
Williamson shot her first few
episodes Dec. 15 to 20 in New
Yo rk and hits the air for the first
time Feb. 5, capping what has
been a whirlwind few months for
the 23-year-old.
“Everyone’s really nice, it’s
like a job,” said Williamson of
her first few days on the set.
“People come and do their stuff
and they leave. Honestly it’s like
a family. My mother on the show,
it’s been her nature to be wel-
coming.”
The road to the ABC studios
began about three years ago
when the former student of Whit-
by’s Trafalgar Castle School sent
an audition tape to the show’s
casting director. While
Williamson said there was inter-
est, she was told “it wasn’t the
right time”.
A year later, the show called
asking for another tape, but again
the timing didn’t work.
“A couple of months ago they
called on a Monday and wanted
to know if I wanted to do a screen
test,” Williamson recalled of the
events that unfolded in October.
“I did the test on Wednesday and
they called and said I had the job
on Friday.”
She watched a few episodes of
the show prior to the test and ad-
mitted it’s “very intimidating” re-
placing an actress with a lengthy
history of playing the character
that the departing Erin Torpey
has. However, Williamson said
she was told from the start the
show was interested in what she
could bring as an actress to the
role.
“As far as I know, they cast me
because I have a very fun person-
ality, I’m very all over the place
all the time,” she said. “In Jessi-
ca, her character is very sweet,
but strong. She’s kind of the one
who takes care of everyone else.”
The major storyline made for
an immediate jump into the ac-
tion.
“My first two days of shooting
there was lots of emotion flying
all over the place,” she recalled.
“It was intense for the first two
days.”
The Jessica Buchanan charac-
ter brings plenty of stability to
Williamson’s life. With a Mon-
day to Friday shooting schedule,
she’ll have plenty of opportunity
to travel home to visit her parents
in Pickering. In New York, she’s
renting a place in Manhattan.
“It’s so nice as an actor to
know exactly when you’re going
to be working next,” said
Williamson. “It can be so up and
down.”
Williamson has numerous act-
ing credits on her resume, includ-
ing guest roles on ‘Earth: Final
Conflict’, ‘Twice in a Lifetime,’
and ‘Doc,’ with Billy Ray Cyrus,
who she described effusively as
“so funny, he’s so great, he’s so
good”.
But, it was during the shooting
of her guest spot last summer on
‘Mutant X’ that really started her
thinking about making acting a
career.
“I think I always wanted to do
it full time, but I guess it was this
past summer when I got a role in
a big TV show for six days,” she
said. “I came home and told my
mom ‘I really, really wanted to
do this full time’.”

to Live for next five years

two worlds, his life begins to spiral out
of control. He is torn between the
woman who loves him and the mysteri-
ous woman of his fantasies.
He receives mass criticism from the

marked for death by a traitor operative.
Barris must regain control of his life.
Both of them.

his friend’s death.

tany Murphy
It was the perfect honey-
moon... until it began.
Tom Leezak and Sarah McN-
erney are unexpectedly swept off
their feet after their first meeting.
Tom is a late-night radio traffic
reporter whose good looks, blue-
collar lifestyle and unrelenting
passion for sports makes him the
ultimate alpha-male.
Sarah is a beautiful, free-spir-
ited writer whose family is as
wealthy as it is snobbish. Much
to the surprise of Tom’s friends
and the dismay of Sarah’s family,
the two quickly fall in love and
marry.
Following their wedding, the
happy couple sets off with the
highest of hopes and ideals about
love and marriage, on what they

and a relentless string of bad
luck, the happy couple experi-
ences a honeymoon from hell
that tests the limits of their young
love.

While Barris gains notoriety

–– creating such innovative and
popular game shows as ‘The
Newlywed Game’ and the self-
hosted ‘The Gong Show’ –– he
regularly executes assassinations
for the United States govern-
ment.
Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy are ‘Just Married’ in

St. Mary Monarchs Nathan Thomas (21) leaps to make a pass,
while two Dunbarton Spartans attempt to intercept. The Monarchs
downed the Spartans 71-45 in senior boys’basketball action.
Hoops matchup
features undefeated
high school clubs
BY AL RIVETT
Sports Editor
PICKERING —In a battle of
the undefeated titans of Durham
Region high school hoops, it wasn’t
even close.
The St. Mary Catholic Sec-
ondary School Monarchs and the
Dunbarton High School Spartans
entered Tuesday’s senior boys’ bas-
ketball matchup with identical 4-0
records — tied for first in Lake On-
tario Secondary School Athletics
(LOSSA) West Division standings
— and a chance to earn city brag-
ging rights for the moment.
A game with so much on the line
nearing the end of regular-season
play turned out to be a contest the
Spartans would like to forget. The
Monarchs sprinted out of the gate
and rolled to an easy 71-45 victory
on home court in LOSSA action.
The Spartans got the impression
they were in for a long afternoon
early in the contest, as St. Mary
converted two successive Dunbar-
ton turnovers into fast-break points
before the game was 30 seconds
old.
And, the Monarchs kept on run-
ning, leading 12-6 at the end of the
first quarter and then doubling the
score on the reeling Spartans by a
28-14 advantage at halftime.
It was no contest in the last half
of play, as the Monarchs’ offence
was able to strike from virtually
everywhere on the floor, while St.
Mary’s unyielding defence forced
the Spartans into numerous
turnovers. The Monarchs were also
big winners on the offensive and de-
fensive boards, getting virtually all
the loose balls.
Monarchs’ coach Mike Gorden-
sky was surprised with the ease in
which his charges posted the impor-
tant win.
“Our leading scorer (David Fer-
dinand) wasn’t playing due to a
school disciplinary decision, which
concerned me a bit. When you play
Dunbarton, you know they’re going
to come after you. It’s a big rivalry,
we’re a block away from them and
there was pride on the line, so it’s
never easy against them,” said Gor-
densky.
Gordensky was especially
pleased with his team defence,
which has been the team’s strong
suit so far this season.
“When you hold them to 14
points in the first half, that’s huge,”
he said. “We rebounded really well,
too.”
The coach, however, was con-
cerned with his team’s shooting, es-
pecially beyond the arc where the
Monarchs have traditionally shot
well this season.
“I wasn’t happy with our of-
fence. We had one three-pointer in
the game. We usually have six or
seven threes. We didn’t shoot the
ball that well,” he said.
Gordensky added guard Sydney
Bookal, who was the high scorer for
the Monarchs with 15 points, was a
major contributor both offensively
and defensively.
For Spartans coach Jeff Maharaj,
he chalked up the lopsided loss to
the Christmas break, which ren-
dered his players a little rusty when
returning to the hardwood.
“We were really flat and rusty,”
said Maharaj. “We had one practice
before this game. Hopefully, the
next time we see these guys, we’ll
be a little more prepared.”
Jermaine McKenzie netted 12
points for the Spartans; Shane Tin-
gling chipped in with 11.
GAME NOTES:The Monarchs
played in two tournaments over the
Christmas break, in Waterloo and
Hamilton. In Waterloo, the Mon-
archs lost by seven points to the
host Waterloo Collegiate Vikings in
the final. Due to injuries, only five
St. Mary players were available for
the game. In Hamilton, the Mon-
archs lost by seven in the final to
Hamilton Cathedral...

AJAX —It was an all-Annan-
dale final at the Pepsi Bantam

at the Whitby Curling Club last
weekend.
Annandale Curling Club sent
three rinks to the seven-team zone
event, with two advancing to the re-
gionals at Toronto’s Donalda Club
Jan. 18 and 19.
Annandale’s Tim March and
Lesley Pyne met in the ‘A’-side
final, with the March team posting
the victory. With March were Kayla
Bianchi, Matt Pyne and Tracy
O’Leary. The March rink posted
three consecutive wins en route to
the championship.
The other Annandale entry,
skipped by Renee Lalonde, finished
with a 1-2 record.
Annandale teams also enjoyed
success at the Pepsi Junior Mixed
Zone Championship, hosted at the
Whitby club last weekend.
Meaghan O’Leary skipped the team
of Peter Stecyk,Ashley Bianchi and

trakos to victory to advance to the
regionals, also Jan. 18 at the Donal-
da club. The O’Leary team received
a first-round bye and then proceed-
ed to defeat Devon Martin from the
Oshawa Curling Club 8-3. In the
‘A’-side final, the O’Leary rink lost
to Jeff Thomas of Toronto’s Tam
Heather club, putting the Annandale
crew in the ‘B’-side final against the
Rob Larmer rink from the host
Whitby club. The O’Leary rink pre-
vailed 8-3 to earn its berth at re-
gionals.

Another Annandale team is
headed to the Dalewood Golf Club,

weekend.
Sean Aune skips the team of
Geoff Fox, John Fargo and Tim
LaRoche in the double-knockout
event. Two zone winners advance
directly to the provincial finals in
Brighton and Trenton Jan. 17 to 19.
•••
Annandale has 10 teams entered
in the TCA Energizer Men’s Bon-
spiel that runs throughout the
To ronto area Jan. 4 to 11. Carl Vick-
