Area teen charged
in sex attack
AJAX — Police have charged
a 14-year-old boy with sexually
assaulting an Ajax elementary
teacher after the woman was at-
tacked in the school parking lot.
Durham Regional Police said
the 29-year-old teacher was walk-
ing to her car at 4:30 p.m. Friday
when she was grabbed from be-
hind by a youth and sexually as-
saulted. She fought off the teen
but was attacked again, police
said.
“It’s alleged she was sexually
fondled.Twice she pushed him
away but he kept coming at her,”
police spokesman Sergeant Paul
Malik said.
He said the teacher eventually
escaped the attacker and fled to
her vehicle. She did not suffer any
injuries and reported the incident
to police.
Sgt. Malik said a Grade 8 stu-
dent at the school was arrested
Sunday.
The boy, who is a previous stu-
dent of the victim’s, was charged
with sexual assault and released
to appear in Oshawa youth court
on June 15, he said.
A spokesman for the Durham
District School Board would not
comment on whether the student
has been suspended.

Calls for underpass renewed
RICK JOHNSON
‘Brock Road is a death trap
and has been for years.’
City councillor
demands funding
to fix ‘death trap’
BY SUSAN O’NEILL
Staff Writer
DURHAM —A Pickering
councillor is vowing to keep
pushing for an underpass at the
rail crossing on Brock Road
south of Taunton Road where
two Ajax residents were killed
in a tragic accident last Mon-
day.
Pickering Councillor and
works committee chairman
Rick Johnson told his col-
leagues at the May 9 works
meeting the Region needs to
increase its funding for roads
projects to address the backlog
of work that needs to be done
across Durham.
He maintained one of those
priorities should be the plan for
a grade separation at the CPR
crossing where Richard
Schewe, 31, and his two-year-
old daughter Mikaela, were
killed in a collision with a train
on May 7.
“That underpass should
have been in five years ago,”
Coun. Johnson said.
Durham Regional Police
have reported they believe Mr.
Schewe was distracted while
he was driving because he was
talking on a cellphone and did-
n’t notice the warning lights
and barriers were activated at
the crossing.
In an interview following
Wednesday’s meeting, Coun.
Johnson said the Region iden-
tified a series of improvements
to Brock Road, which is a Re-
gional road, about seven years
ago, one of which was the
grade separation at the train
tracks just south of Taunton
Road.
He reported the preparatory
work and an environmental as-
sessment on the project have
since been completed, noting
“all we’re waiting for is the
funding”.
But, it could be at least five
years before that funding,
roughly $7 million, comes
through because the Brock
Road project was dropped
from the Region’s five-year
forecast earlier this year, he
noted.
“Brock Road has been
pushed back and pushed back,”
Coun. Johnson said. “I’m frus-
trated... Brock Road is a death
trap and it has been for years.”
Coun. Johnson, whose 18-
year-old son Russell was killed
in a single-car crash on Brock
Road in March 1999, main-
tained the road needs to be
widened and the underpass
built at the rail crossing as soon
as possible because the traffic

watershed
PICKERING — The City
of Pickering is asking the feder-
al government to help cover the
costs of two ongoing watershed
studies in Ajax and Pickering.
Councillors voted May 7 to
seek the support of the City’s
partners in the projects in re-
questing that Transport Canada
contribute $150,000 to help
fund the completion of the stud-
ies of Carruthers and Duffins
creeks.
Ward 3 City Councillor
David Pickles, who introduced
the motion, noted the federal
government is a large landhold-
er in the area and therefore
should be expected to share the
costs of the studies.
“A lot of the benefits of the
planning and strategy and some
of the work this group will do
will benefit the federal lands,”
Coun. Pickles said in an inter-
view
Coun. Pickles reported the
municipalities of Pickering,
Ajax, Uxbridge, Markham and
Whitchurch-Stouffville together
with Durham and York regions
as well as the Toronto and Re-
gion Conservation Authority
(TRCA), have contributed a
total of $140,000 to the studies.
Pickering lad is
public elementary
student of
the year
BY MIKE RUTA

PICKERING —Andrew
Goldsmith says the support
of many people in his life,
past and present, led to him
being chosen Durham’s pub-
lic elementary student of the
year.
That’s what the student at
Frenchman’s Bay Public
School in Pickering told an
audience at the recent
Durham Elementary Teach-
ers’ Federation of Ontario
breakfast in Ajax.
“I just thanked everybody
who had helped me through
the years, my principals, my
teachers, my hockey coaches,
my parents, pretty much any-
body who I know,” said the
Grade 8 pupil.
Andrew did not know he
had been nominated and was
“overwhelmed” to have been
chosen.
Prime minister of his
school’s student council and
a member of the ‘Kids for
Change’ team and the year-
book committee, Andrew has
taken part in various volun-
teer activities in the commu-
nity and is a dedicated ath-
lete, listing hockey and the
high jump as his favourite
sports.
With so much on his plate,
it’s not surprising he said he
doesn’t have too much free
time.
Andrew said his involve-
ment in school activities
gives him the opportunity to
meet many students, and
school is more enjoyable
when you know everyone.
Asked about his future
plans, he said he has an inter-
est in politics, sparked a few
years ago when his father,
Herb Goldsmith, as president
of the Association of Day-
Care Operators of Ontario,
took part in a government an-
nouncement covered by tele-
vision media.
Andrew worked for the
Canadian Alliance Party in
the last federal election and
for the Progressive Conserva-
tive Party in the last provin-
cial campaign, dropping off
fliers, telephone canvassing
and entering data on a com-
puter. Andrew said he has no
political affiliation, but got
involved “just to find out
what each party was about;
I’ll probably pick a new party
next time.

Quality of life declining in Durham, study says
BY SUSAN O’NEILL
Staff Writer
DURHAM —The quality
of life in Durham Region has
“fallen significantly” since
1990, according to a recent
study completed by the Social
Development Council (SDC) of
Ajax-Pickering.
The study, presented to the
Region’s health and social ser-
vices committee last Thursday,
examined 12 statistical indica-
tors that fall under the health,
social, environmental and eco-
nomic categories.
“The most obvious issue is
the social housing shortfall and
that’s going to need a huge com-
munity effort and a commitment
from all levels of government,”
said SDC executive director
Duncan Read who reported this
is the first time a quality of life
study has been conducted in
Durham.
In an interview Monday, Mr.
Read explained the report,
which came about as a result of
the Quality of Life Index Project
sponsored by the Ontario Social
Development Council and the
Social Planning Network of On-
tario, is intended to review
trends that effect positive or
negative change in the quality of
life of Durham residents.
He explained 1990 was the

base year for the study, noting that
year, which is used as a benchmark
from which to measure progress
and setbacks, was assigned a value
of 100.
And, based on a series of calcu-
lations, the study found that the
Quality of Life Index for Durham
in 2000 was 79.3, which means
over the last 10 years, the quality
of life for residents in Durham Re-
gion has dropped by more than 20
per cent.
“Generally speaking, things are
generally pretty good,” Mr. Read
said, before adding, “We have a
huge problem in social housing
that we have to tackle.”
According to the study,
Durham has experienced setbacks
in several areas: there are now
more new cancer cases; more ba-
bies born with low birth weights;
more of the labour force is unem-
ployed; the number of people
working as a percentage of popula-
tion has dropped; more bankrupt-
cies; more hours of moderate to
poor air quality; longer waiting
lists for long-term care and longer
waiting lists for public housing.
The study also indicates
progress has been made in that
there are fewer admissions to the
Children’s Aid Society; fewer so-
cial assistance beneficiaries; an in-
crease in tonnes of waste being di-
verted through blue box recycling
and fewer toxic spills reported.
“There is much to be concerned
with. In spite of just coming
through an economic recovery, the
QLI indicates that the quality of
life in Durham is well below what
it was in 1990 — troubling to be
sure, but doubly so given that it
seems likely a recession is loom-
ing in the near future,” the study
states.
“Government policies that
favour tax cuts and freezes over
health-, social- and income-sup-
port programs will continue to im-
pact negatively on those who are
most vulnerable, the poor, the sick
and the aged. Durham can do bet-
ter,” the study concludes.
Mr. Read reported he hopes the
study will serve as the basis for
discussion that will lead to action
to improve the areas highlighted as
concerns here.

DURHAM —Fred Jones’s
desire to formalize accountabili-
ty within the Durham Catholic
District School Board was de-
scribed as a “witch hunt” by a
colleague at Monday night’s
board meeting.
The Brock-Scugog-Uxbridge
trustee and board chairman out-
lined a plan to establish an audit
and accountability framework
within the board. Trustee Jones
said he wants to set up a system
whereby the efficacy of pro-
grams, policies and whatever
trustees want to focus upon can
be gauged using specific crite-
ria.
Trustee Jones’s plan would
see independent audits of staff
evaluations of the effectiveness
of, for example, a board policy,
to ensure staff’s information
was accurate.
But not all his colleagues are
on board, including Whitby
Trustee Mary Ann Martin, who
views the chairman’s initiative
as a slight on staff.
“I’m very insulted by this
presentation made by you to this
board, in front of our guests
tonight and the media,” she told
her colleague. “I’m just floored,
Fred. I am so insulted and I am
so disappointed. To me it sounds
like a witch hunt. You’re looking
for things that don’t exist.”
Trustee Jones said his col-
league was missing the point:
not just the Durham Catholic
board but also all school boards
should establish such a system.
“I certainly do not lack faith
in any of our superintendents,”
he said. “I have not suggested
that; the report doesn’t imply
that.”
Trustee Martin wasn’t con-
vinced, maintaining he was
needlessly calling into question
board staff.
“This is not intended to make
administration accountable; this
is intended to make the board of
trustees accountable,” said
Trustee Jones.
When Trustee Jones began
his presentation by suggesting
some in the past have called into
question the board’s account-
ability, veteran Oshawa Trustee
Joe Corey left the room.
“I object to that,” he said an-
grily.
Pickering Trustee Fran
Pereira said much of what
Trustee Jones is proposing does-
n’t make sense. He emphasized
it will be a board decision if his
proposal is accepted.
Trustee Jones replied the
terms of reference are being
drafted and should be brought
forward at the next board meet-
ing.
Trustee McCafferty said the
process is not intended to call
into question staff members.
“If something goes wrong
with the board, we are held ac-
countable for that,” he said.
“There has to be some account-
ability there. The bottom line is
it’s not against staff, this whole
process.”
“It’s not a witch hunt,”
echoed Trustee Karwowski.
“It’s not to get anybody. It’s to
bring in a new practice. Maybe
we’re not communicating it that
well.”
Whitby Trustee Scott Mur-
dock questioned who would
perform the independent audits
and what they would cost.
Trustee Jones said there are sev-
eral options, such as hiring an
auditor or a management con-
sultant.
Perhaps, he said, the ministry
of education could assist the
board.
“I see many costs involved in
this,” said Trustee Murdock.

baseball team and vacationing at
the family cottage north of
Lakefield near Woodview will
keep him pretty busy this sum-
mer before he joins his sister,
Lauren, at Dunbarton High
School this fall.
Herb Goldsmith attended the
ETFO breakfast and is “very
proud” of his son, whom he de-
scribed as an outgoing, caring
person who has always been a
leader.
“He’s always done extremely
well in school, but he’s also
done well outside of the school
in terms of the things he volun-
teers with,” said Mr. Goldsmith.
That includes delivering
Christmas baskets to the less
fortunate, a project his family
initiated at St. Paul’s On The
Hill Anglican Church.
A big focus in Andrew’s life
is ensuring no one is left out,
said Mr. Goldsmith.
“He just always has a way of
making people feel important,”
he said. “He’s very big on mak-
ing sure everyone is involved.
He goes to great lengths to be a
special friend.”

Great Scots!
DURHAM – Durham Region residents turned out recently for a 50-plus ‘Movin’ and
Groovin’ active living seminar featuring Scottish dancing. The 11th annual event saw
dance troupe members (from left) Gladys Graham and Fred Harding take the floor with
Jean Keary of Ajax and Janet Johnstone of Bowmanville. The event was held at the Clar-
ington Beech Centre in Bowmanville.
Pickering’s
Notion is to
wait for Ajax’s
move on road
PICKERING — The City of Pick-
ering is waiting to see how Ajax han-
dles a plan to rezone land along Notion
Road before making a decision about
the land on its side of the street.
Pickering’s executive committee
voted Monday to defer a decision on the
Notion Road Land Use and Urban De-
sign Study until the Town of Ajax has
dealt with the joint report.
Ajax council’s community affairs
and planning committee voted to defer
a decision on the study last week. That
committee doesn’t meet again until
later this month.
“Ajax is the primary area that’s im-
pacted,” said Ward 1 Regional Council-
lor Maurice Brenner who moved a mo-
tion Monday recommending a deferral
on the grounds that Pickering should
“wait to see what Ajax does”.
Pickering and Ajax joined forces in
1998 to conduct the study of Notion
Road, which forms part of the boundary
between the two communities.
The decision to do a study came
after J&F Waste Systems proposed the
construction of a waste transfer station
at 57 Notion Rd. The company eventu-
ally scrapped the idea.
Coun. Brenner noted a joint meeting
of the Pickering and Ajax councils
could be called to deal with the study.

How desperate is Premier
Mike Harris to win an election?
So desperate he is stooping to
something he said he would never
do — shaping his policies accord-
ing to polls.
The Progressive Conservative
premier, who is far behind the
Liberals in the polls, has been
found by accident taking some of
his own ideas to see whether the
public would approve of policies
he is contemplating, including
selling some Crown corporations.
A pollster for the Tories, who
mistakenly called the home of a
reporter, asked specifically
whether the Province should pri-
vatize agencies such as the
Liquor Control Board of Ontario
and TVOntario.
This is odd for a start because
Mr. Harris’s Tories, in their Com-
mon Sense Revolution manifesto
supposedly carved in stone,
which helped win the 1995 elec-
tion, promised clearly and un-
equivocally if elected ‘we will
sell off some assets, such as the
LCBO.’
They also said more cautious-
ly they ‘will actively explore the
sale of other assets including
TVOntario’ because the private
sector had shown it could provide
better and more efficient service.
The pollster also asked
whether the person interviewed
favoured more cuts in personal
and business taxes, which the
government was considering for
its budget, and what were the
most important concerns it should
address.
About the same time on a dif-
ferent issue Mr. Harris suddenly
made significant concessions that
won him a truce in his war with
teachers, whom he was trying to
force to spend more time in class-
room as well as supervise ex-
tracurricular activities such as
sports and clubs.
The premier allowed more of
teachers’ duties to be included as
classroom time and abandoned a
law he pushed through that would
have compelled teachers to super-
vise, although he had maintained
for months his policy was the
only effective one and he would
stick to it.
Even some Tories believe he
backed off because a major news-
paper poll suggested the public
felt education had become almost
as big a concern as health, which
has ranked highest for years.
This reliance on polls is not at
all what the premier promised
when he became leader in 1990.
He then said polls had become a
hindrance to decision-making.
Mr. Harris said in one leader-
ship debate politicians should
base their policies on what they
feel is right, on their principles.
Politicians who base their
policies on polls, trying to please
people, he said, sometimes fail to
take the tough decisions that are
necessary.
The premier said those who
based their policies on polls in-
cluded the Liberals under then
premier David Peterson and earli-
er Tories, clearly meaning long-
serving former premier William
Davis who was noted for striving
for consensus to satisfy every-
body, although Mr. Harris did not
identify him by name.
“The parties all got the same
polls and we all had backroom
advisers who told us what the
polls meant,” Mr. Harris said
then. “These polls said what sort
of policy we should follow.”
Mr. Harris said one result was
“for a period of time there was no
difference between the Conserva-
tive and Liberal parties. It was a
disaster for the province and it
was a disaster for our party.”
Tom Long, who was outspo-
ken president of the Ontario To-
ries at that time and remains a
power as Mr. Harris’s chairman
and chief strategist in his two
winning elections, scoffed pithily
that under Mr. Davis “all the im-
portant final decisions were made
by four guys sifting through
polling data in a Toronto hotel
room.”
But Mr. Harris also is now
warily polling before setting poli-
cies, which is something like a
doctor refusing to prescribe the
most effective medicine unless
the patient says he likes the taste.
One reason is several times re-
cently he has announced policies,
such as allowing MPPs a 42-per
cent pay raise or allowing too
many people, including police,
access to personal health records,
and then been forced by public
outcries to retreat on them.
Mr. Harris is less sure of him-
self and probably doing more of
these polls, but we will never
know unless he accidentally calls
another reporter.
Premier is leaning on polls
Harris ignores past pledge, canvasses for answers
You said it
The question was:
What’s your reaction to the announcement
of a new university for Durham?
Life’s been awfully good for most Durham residents late-
ly.
Just last week the Province announced a new university
would be coming soon to the region, Premier Mike Harris
reaffirmed his government’s $300 million 10-year promise to
the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor pro-
posal for Clarington, and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty
pledged to see Hwy. 407 extended to Hwy 35/115.
Talk about a triple hit for us!
While all these announcements must be celebrated and ap-
preciated, there’s a dark side to Durham’s bright future.
A report from the Social Development Council of Ajax-
Pickering released late last week to the Region’s health and
social services committee paints a grim picture for Durham’s
least fortunate citizens. Using a ‘quality of life’ index which
sets its baseline at 100 in 1990, it evaluates 12 statistical indi-
cators and shows a QOL index of 79.3 by 2000. That means
the quality of life in Durham - according to the report - has
dropped a whopping 20 per cent in just 10 years.
First, the good news: Since 1990 we’ve had a 53.5 per cent
drop in social assistance recipients, an 11.9 per cent reduction
in CAS admissions, a 42.5 per cent decrease in toxic spills and
a 33.2 per cent increase in blue box diversions.
In three other categories, the numbers are nearly even:
bankruptcies are up by just 2.9 per cent, the number of unem-
ployed seeking work is only 2.2 per cent higher and the total
per cent of those working as a rate of population is only down
4.7 per cent.
But here’s the really bad news: the number of low birth-
weight babies has increased by 9.6 per cent, the percentage of
new cancer cases is up 8.4 per cent, the number of people on
long-term care waiting lists has jumped 29.9 per cent, hours
of poor/moderate air quality are up a nauseating 58.8 per cent
and, to top it all off, demand on public housing is up an as-
tounding 269.3 per cent.
We can blame the public housing mess on senior levels of
government which gave up on and got out of public housing
in the early 1990s. Municipalities are feeling the crunch as
those who need it most show up, literally, on their doorsteps.
The Province and feds must own up to their mistake and lend
a local hand.
Long-term care waiting lists are high now, but the Region
is expanding and building new facilities to address this con-
cern. As for air quality - that’s a problem that goes well be-
yond Durham’s borders and must be policed by the Province
and the feds.
It’s all sobering food for thought and clearly reveals
Durham’s successes are offset, to some degree, by an inabili-
ty to handle the needs of the poor.
When is a raise not a raise? If you listen to local politi-
cians, it’s when they push it through under the guise of effi-
ciency.
That’s exactly what happened May 7 at council when
Pickering Ward 2 Regional Councillor Mark Holland’s pro-
posal to split the City’s executive committee into three sep-
arate units — planning, operations and finance - narrowly
passed by a 4-3 vote. And with the unnecessary extra work
the councillors have created for themselves, they agreed a
raise of up to 25 per cent was only fair (did we mention three
of the councillors in favour also received an eight-per cent
raise on their Regional pay not too many weeks ago) and
will be paid based on attendance at these new committees.
But pay raises aside, we’re more concerned with the af-
front to democracy that comes along with the change to the
committee structure.
A byproduct of the new structure is to move any meetings
without an obvious public interest to weekday afternoons,
rather than evenings when residents are more likely able to
attend and watch their elected officials in action.
Who will judge which agendas are worthy of widespread
public access and which ones should be buried in the after-
noon when many taxpaying citizens are at work? And how
many taxpayers are willing, or more importantly, able to
give up work time to monitor an issue that affects them?
What arrangements must they be forced to make in order to
speak to councillors in a deputation?
It’s difficult for every municipality to attract qualified and
knowledgeable candidates every three years to seek council
positions, but eliminating from the prospect list everyone
with a day job reduces the probability of electing effective
representatives.
In the time between now and the new format taking effect
in September, we urge councillors to work with members of
a stakeholders group, which is being formed to provide pub-
lic input during a three-month transition period, to reach a
compromise that truly will serve taxpayers and voters best.
Andrew
Mitchell said,
“It is good. It
should improve
the nightlife.”
Brenda Hayes
said,“It’s
great. It will
bring more jobs
and people to
the region and
improve the stu-
dents’ stan-
dards.”
Dwight
Budgell said,
“It is a good

make it easier
for the kids.”

Regional
councillors fail
to understand
urgency of
hospital situation
To the editor:
Re: ‘The health-care answer is
out there,’ Steve Houston column,
April 29.
As usual, Mr. Houston is spot
on with his comments. One
evening recently I happened to be
channel surfing and came across a
broadcast of Durham council.
When you watch these people
in action it is no surprise they
come up with strange decisions.
Although they were discussing
the police budget, it seemed
Chairman Roger Anderson was
more concerned with what the
members were going to have for
dinner and whether or not he
should order takeout.
It’s very sad and frightening
that this bunch of part-time politi-
cal aspirants should be able to in-
fluence whether or not a sick per-
son has to wait four hours in an
emergency room to see a doctor
(that’s assuming we have doctors
left at the Ajax and Pickering
Health Centre). I cannot help but
get the feeling Durham council as
a whole really has no grasp of the
dire straits our local hospitals find
themselves in.
As usual they continue to spout
diatribe as to how it is all Mike
Harris’s fault and has nothing to
do with them.
Well even if they believe this
then at least show some sort of in-
terest — I am sure any reasonable
amount of financial assistance
would help.
Their decision, in my mind,
carried an air of revenge for ad-
verse publicity they received from
the hospitals’ publicity depart-
ment.
I also think I heard one of the
councillors mention yet another
‘retreat’(actually a good word for
the way this council thinks and
acts) up north. Presumably this is
so they can spend the eight-per
cent raise they just awarded them-
selves.
I wonder if whilst they are sit-
ting there eating and drinking at
the taxpayers’ expense their
thoughts will stray to the doctors
and nurses at our hospital battling
to keep up with patient loads.
I hope at the next election (pity
it’s not next week) people realize
just how important it is to get out
and vote.

Gambling laws
must be fair
To the editor:
Is there one law for the rich and
another for the poor with regards to
gambling in Ontario?
Our government has made it
legal for thousands of slot ma-
chines to be placed exclusively in
large remote establishments. Yet it
is still illegal for small, often fami-
ly-run businesses to participate. A
few large establishments profit,
leaving the smaller firms without.
Often patrons’options are limit-
ed when it comes to returning
home after a day at the casino.
Considerations such as taking a
taxi or public transit are not avail-
able from these remote communi-
ties. Commuting to remote areas
has led to unnecessary carnage on
our highways. In the end, who does
the law hurt? Individuals wishing
to play are forced to remote areas,
local businesses suffer as discre-
tionary dollars are taken out of the
community. Local establishments
are not able to offer this popular
form of entertainment and lose the
benefits of incidental revenue such
as a meal purchase while playing.
This convenience and sharing of
wealth is a reality in other Canadi-
an provinces.

Cruise ship dance job the
‘opportunity of a lifetime’
BY DAWN DE SOUZA
Special to the News Advertiser
PICKERING —How would you
like to get paid to take a seven-month
cruise? Well, a Pickering woman and
her fiancé have been given the oppor-
tunity to do just that.
Tonya Murray, 22, and her fiancé
Rob Leduc, 24, have been hired to
dance on a Renaissance cruise ship.
The couple described the trip as
“the opportunity of a lifetime” and
said this is something they wanted to
do together.
Their trip will begin in Dover,
England and then travel to the Baltic
Sea, through the Mediterranean to Is-
tanbul and then across the Atlantic
Ocean to the Bahamas, hitting 41 dif-
ferent ports along the way.
But, before they get on the ship,
Murray and Leduc will be travelling
to Charlotte, North Carolina May 18
to meet the rest of the cast and learn
the five dance shows they will be per-
forming.
This is where the details get a lit-
tle fuzzy, according to the couple.
They know they will have a small
cast and a variety of dances to per-
form, but they won’t receive any
specifics until they arrive in the U.S.
“It’s something you just can’t pass
up,” said Murray, who has been danc-
ing for 19 years, and is currently
teaching and taking lessons at the
Denise Lester Dance Academy in
Pickering.
“I think it’s good that we can do
this now and enjoy it,” said Murray.
Both said they know dancing is
not something they will be able to do
forever but it is something they would
like to keep up with.
“(The chance is) absolutely won-
derful... (and) one of the things that I
really thought was a good plan was I
went to school first,” she said.
Leduc agreed. “When you finish
university and get the degree... (you
will) still have a job when you’re 40,”
he said.
Both are recent university gradu-
ates and stress you do not have to
give up school to have these types of
opportunities.
Murray and Leduc met six years
ago when they had summer jobs
dancing at Paramount Canada’s Won-
derland — jobs they kept every sum-
mer since, until now.
Leduc, who lives in Windsor,
would move to the Toronto area every
summer and the couple tried to see
each other every two weeks through-
out the year.
Six years, and many expensive
phone bills later, the couple is en-
gaged and will actually be planning
their August 2002 wedding while
away.
The cruise will start in June and
they will be coming home in Decem-
ber, but hopefully not for long. The
couple hopes the cruise job will lead
to more.

PICKERING —Tara Columbus returned as
champion from the Elite Ontario Provincial Gymnas-
tics Championships at Seneca College recently.
Columbus was one of three Pickering gymnasts
representing Oshawa’s Gemini Gymnastics at the
provincials and grabbed the all-around crown in the
senior 2 category — the second consecutive year she
has won an all-around title at provincials. She earned
a gold on the balance beam with a meet-high score of
8.7 out of a possible 9.0. She also won bronze on vault
and floor exercise, and was sixth on uneven bars.
Columbus noted she had no expectations heading
into the competition, only to do her best and let the
chips fall where they may.
“I really didn’t go in to win the provincial. I just
wanted to do my best,” she said.
The 14-year-old said the key was concentrating
on what she had done in practice and staying calm
during the actual competition.
“You have to stay calm,” she said. “You can’t get
too excited. You have to compete like you do in
training. That’s the only way.”
She plans to continue to train at Gemini Gym-
nastics during the summer, and may move up into a
higher competitive bracket next year.
Fellow Pickering gymnast Kaitlin Grandy posted
a 16th place finish in the senior 2 category. She
placed seventh on vault and uneven bars.
In the senior 1 category, Katelyn Strezov, also of
Pickering, competing in her first provincial champi-
onships, earned a silver medal on the floor exercise,
sixth on vault and ninth on uneven bars.
In addition to their individual accomplishments,
each athlete received a gold medal as part of the
winning Metro East teams in the senior 1 and senior
2 divisions.

"FINDS" OPENS
IN AJAX
Get ready for a whole new way to shop,
as Laura Canada, one of Canada’s leading
better women’s retailers, continues to
open the doors to its newest division
Finds, with the opening of an Ajax
location last week. The store opened on
Friday, May 4 at Durham Centre, 40
Kingston Road East, Finds a supercentre
concept, will provide today’s busy
consumer with a shopping destination that
is big on value, quality, selection and
character while meeting more than just
one of their shopping needs.
Primarily a women’s fashion destination,
Finds will offer a range of products from
women’s ready-to-wear fashions to
accessories, lingerie, men’s fashions,
home décor items and gifts. Designer and
national brand labels will make up the
merchandise assortment that will truly
offer the customer terrific finds at savings
of 25% to 60% off comparable values.
And with stores averaging 15,000 square
feet in size, the selection will be both
extensive and impressive.
In addition to a constantly refreshed
merchandise assortment - a huge selection
of new and exciting finds will arrive each
week - the Finds store concept goes
beyond industry norm for big box
shopping destinations. Designed by the
international, Toronto-based design firm,
burdiflek, Finds offers a fun, aesthetically
pleasing and an uncomplicated shopping
environment above all.
To celebrate the new Finds opening in
Ajax, a 4-day grand opening celebration
was planned. The celebration was run
from May 10 to May 13, with a portion of
sales on May 10 and 11 being donated to
the Canadian Cancer Society for breast
cancer research and support programs.
The fundraising effort, on behalf of the
Canadian Cancer Society, will be part of
all the Finds store opening celebrations
this spring.
Finds..... where top quality and
true value meet.

The Golf Guy
Musings and consideration of
a golf addict.
My first job in life, paying job
that is, was caddying at
Scarborough Golf and Country
Club as a young boy. It was a won-
derful way to earn some extra
money along with learning the
rules and etiquette of this great
game called golf.
It began for me a life long pas-
sion, my wife says obsession; with
the most amazing game of golf.
During the next few weeks in this
section called Golf Fore You, I
would like to share or reveal some
of my feelings, experiences, opin-
ions that have formed over my
forty year love affair with the game.
Some of these thoughts are
difficult to express. How do you
explain the feel of the rising sun in
your face, warming spirit and body
as it also dries the morning dew as
you march down a fairway that
feels like velvet on your feet? How
could I reveal or share the exhilara-
tion of a shot envisioned in your
mind that explodes off the face of
your club that comes to rest exactly
where you saw it finish in your
mind before you made the swing?
Is it possible to explain the shared
joy of your regular golfing buddies
making an eagle or sinking the
impossible 100 foot putt or even
being there when they shoot their
career low round?
Golf brings out the best and
the worst in people, it has dimen-
sions not found in other sports or
games. It is the only game where
you enforce the rules and regula-
tions on yourself. Golf does not
necessarily develop character but it
surely reveals it.
I am going to look at as many
areas of golf as possible to hopeful-
ly give insight, wisdom humour
and encouragement to help you
enjoy the game of a lifetime, for
young and old alike.
Some of the areas we will visit
are local golf courses, shops, equip-
ment, including grips, shafts,
heads and balls for your game as
well as travel locations and golf
personalities
Please remember, Golf is a
game - Have FUN!!
Coming some time in the next
four weeks, will be, The Secret Of
Golf. Until then hit it long and
straight, T.G.G
If you have any comments,
suggestions, or questions please
fax them to the Golf Guy c/o the
