Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo Trustees expected to ratify Monday BByy MMiikkee RRuuttaa Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM — Durham’s public school board has reached tenta- tive deals with its supply teach- ers. The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation’s (OSSTF) District 13 occasional unit rati- fied a tentative contract agree- ment with the Durham District School Board Tuesday. Trustees are expected to finalize the agreement at Monday’s board meeting, the last before the new board takes office. As well, the Elementary Teach- ers’ Federation of Ontario’s (ETFO) Durham occasional unit is voting on a tentative deal later this month. If approved, it would end a nasty impasse between the parties. As dictated by provincial legislation, both agreements would expire on Aug. 31, 2004. The particulars will not be known until and unless all par- ties ratify the deals. “I’m glad it’s over; it’s taken some time to accomplish what we’ve accomplished, but we’re happy with what we ended up with,” said Susan Hawley, OSSTF District 13 occasional president. The unit represents about 250 teachers. She did not know how many took part in the vote at the District 13 office in Whitby, and would not reveal the approval percentage. Ms. Hawley said “the board made some movement in areas there had never been movement on before,” and she believes “it’s the best deal we could get at this point in time.” Durham ETFO supply teach- ers pink-listed the board last spring. The advisory to ETFO members was intended to pre- vent them from taking a job with the board, and the latter from hiring teachers. However, ETFO Public board reaches deal with supply teachers ✦See Supply page 5 A/P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, November 16, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Voted #1 Readers Choice for BEST Motorcycle Dealership 880 Champlain Ave., Oshawa (905) 434-6550 HRS: Mon.-Wed. 10am-7pm, Thurs. 10am-9pm, Fri. 10am-7pm, Sat. 9am-5pm, Sun. 12pm-4pm Remaining 10 0 Y e a r Anniversary P a r t s & Accessorie s 25 % off Michelle Dupuis and Mike Parsons of Sears Pickering donated the “Give Someone Hope Charity Bear” to Marnie Salonius of the Durham Region Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society for their Charity Auction. The line fell near a small school bus as it was travelling along Dyson Road, just south of Rougemount Drive at around 7 a.m., said Durham District School Board offi- cials. “The bus had just started its route so there was only one child and the driver inside,” said board spokesman Andrea Pidwerbecki. The boy, a secondary student, and the driver were both unharmed in the incident. The bus also escaped any damage. Pickering Fire Services responded to the scene and called in Hydro One to fix the line. The driver and a boy on this bus escaped injury after a hydro pole and lines toppled onto the vehicle Thursday. High winds were also blamed for some power outages in the area. Brian J. Schauer photo KINGSWAY FOREST The dawning of a new community! Members of Pickering council will attend a management meet- ing Monday to discuss any issues and concerns raised while door knocking during the campaign period, said Interim Mayor Mau- rice Brenner. “We’ll also review some of our budget deliberations to get a look at what the new council will see in next year’s budget,” he said. That evening, Pickering council will meet for the last time this term, before a new crop of coun- cillors are officially sworn in Dec. 1. The only new councillor is Kevin Ashe, who won the Ward 1 City seat, left vacant by Mayor- elect Dave Ryan. For the first time, Pickering will hold an orien- tation session for new members, said Interim Mayor Brenner. Also Monday night, council will consider a report on a number of issues left outstanding with the Province. Number one on the list is the status of the planning and development area established by a minister’s zoning under the To- ries, said Interim Mayor Brenner. Council would also like an- swers from the new Liberal gov- ernment on its concerns about the proposed Hwy. 407 inter- change and related costs. One issue it can wipe off Pick- ering’s slate of concerns is the privatisation of nuclear inspec- tions, Interim Mayor Brenner points out. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, November 16, 2003 PAGE 5 P Who always delivers to YOUR HOME in Rain, Snow, Extreme Cold or Heat?........YOUR NEWS ADVERTISER CARRIER! The unit represents over 600 supply teach- ers. “We’re pleased,” she said. “It’s a long time coming and even though we’ve accomplished a lot, the next round (of bargaining) is going to be interesting.” The union lifted the pink listing on Monday as part of the tenta- tive deal. If both parties ratify, it will stay lifted. If the deal is not finalized, however, Ms. Thompson said the advisory would be re-instated. Ms. McIlveen on Thursday said she was “very happy with these deals.” She said it was accurate to say the board had moved on its positions to finalize them. Pickering getting ready for new council Supply teachers reach a deal with board ✦ Supply from page 1 A/P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, November 16, 2003 www.durhamregion.com A new outlook Paul Martin and the Liberals must take Ontario seriously It wasn’t pretty but the years-long ascension of Paul Martin to the prime ministership is now imminent. We can only hope Mr. Martin’s Canada includes Ontario. For too long, Ontario has been taken for granted by an arro- gant federal Liberal government that has enjoyed a virtual sweep of the province in the last three elections. That false popularity has been gained only because Ontario voters have felt there was no other choice. But those days could soon be over with the deal to unite the Alliance and Conservative par- ties. Ontario MPs, finally, did stand up to the PM in this last term demanding more say on free votes, especially on same- sex legislation. Trouble is, time ran out on current Prime Min- ister Jean Chretien and it will be up to Mr. Martin to carry on. Mr. Martin has spoken about more free votes for MPs but what Ontarians really want to hear is that more of our tax dol- lars will be returned for services here. Mr. Chretien’s latest multi-billion-dollar handout for health care was a start, but considering the call of the Romanow report for a 25-per cent share of health funding from Ottawa, it’s still far short of what’s needed. Mr. Martin must address the disparity between health-care funding from the provinces versus what the feds provide. The provinces collectively still fund more than 80 per cent of the bill. Mr. Martin must look at a new deal for cities. He cannot afford to dismiss the country’s economic engine, the Greater Toronto Area and especially high-growth areas like Durham Region. After a 10-year drought at the cabinet table, perhaps it’s time to look at a Durham voice in cabinet. Dan McTeague is the only viable candidate for such a post. The hard-working Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge MP is still young, energetic and at least makes noise about the issues he cares about - something that can’t be said for his three local colleagues. The incoming prime minister can’t simply chalk up 100 guaranteed Ontario seats in the election expected in the spring of 2004. By that time there will be a new united right party with a shared vision that will be an alternative to more than a decade of Liberal rule. We may finally have an election worth caring about and we will see if Mr. Martin is up to the task. John Wiersma deserving of recognition TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: Re: John Wiersma gives to the com- munity November 7,2003 I first met Veridian CEO John Wiers- ma during the kick-off of the 1999 Unit- ed Way campaign when I was the Unit- ed Way of Ajax-Pickering Campaign Associate. Veridian had just under- gone a competition readiness merger between Pickering, Ajax and Claring- ton hydro utilities. This major change could have been frightening for Veridian employees, however they all enthusiastically showed confidence about their fu- tures. That speaks well for John Wiers- ma’s corporate leadership. As a freelance writer, I met Mr Wiersma at an Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade meeting in 2002 where he greeted my probing questions about Veridian’s competitive services with respect and graceful guardedness. I have never encountered another CEO or president of a former monop- oly who has been this honourable. I have no hesitation in giving John Wiersma my respect. Arson, home invasions and taking coins from a child. These crimes are taking place in Durham Region and kids are being accused of carrying them out. People, don’t trust anyone under the age of 20. Just imagine, a 14-year-old boy was threatened for what turned out to be 50 cents and a necklace in Bowmanville last week. And five boys aged 12 to 16 are charged with arson after a recent fire at the Northview Community Centre in Oshawa. But, not to worry, there is a solu- tion to all of our problems. It’s time to scrap the Youth Justice Act and take back full responsibility of chil- dren. Don’t say a few bad apples spoil the barrel. The truth is, they’re all capable of these acts. Let’s just take the temptation and the opportunity away from them. Some research is needed to de- termine whether it’s feasible to im- plant microchips into each child as they start school. It’ll be just like the immunization program and we’ll have the peace of mind of knowing where all these dangerous kids are at all times. All right, by now you’ve got the idea, this is a tongue-in-cheek take on how to deal with youth crime. Bottom line: we’ve got to be more involved in our children’s lives and pay attention to what they’re doing. A little vigilance goes a long way. No, don’t spy or mistrust them. Simply try harder to talk to them and earn their trust. So many fam- ilies have both parents working today and it’s harder than ever to stay involved in what they’re doing when you’re not around. But that’s no excuse. Parents have the greatest influ- ence and the best chance to set kids on the right path. Either offer children more guidance, or it’s time to increase the level of legal respon- sibility on parents for their chil- dren’s actions. It’s entirely possible parents of kids accused of crimes would take a more active role in their day-to-day activities if they knew they would be held responsible for their acts. If these parents don’t know their kids are hanging around bad influ- ences, they are negligent in their duties as parents. In other words, if you aren’t the greatest influence on your kids, then you should find out who is. Friends can lead friends down the wrong path if parents don’t pay at- tention to what is happening in their lives. BByy SStteepphheenn SShhaaww Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM — Criminal defen- dants in Durham Region spend far less time in jail awaiting bail than the 12-day average delay cited by an On- tario judge, local lawyers say. In fact, an accused person with a proposed surety usually can get a bail hearing within a few days, if not less, in Os- hawa’s Ontario Court of Jus- tice. A Superior Court judge, at last weekend’s annual Crim- inal Lawyers Association con- ference, said the average time Ontario prisoners spend in custody waiting for a bail hear- ing has tripled to 12 days in re- cent years. While such delays were not uncommon in Durham until recently, addi- tional local resources have provided some relief to Os- hawa’s crowded provincial court system in the past year, lawyers say. “I would think that (a 12-day delay) would be an unusual thing,” said Mary Clare MacK- innon, senior duty counsel in Oshawa’s provincial courts. Mo re than a year ago it was a different story. Defendants presumed innocent were forced to wait in jail several days, often times for more than a week, until a hearing could be held in Durham’s lone bail court. The delays led lawyers to raise complaints some client’s constitutional rights were violated. To help clear the logjam - at- tributed to Durham’s rising population and outdated court system - a second bail court was opened three days a week. Also, the successful launch last year of live video remands and bail hearings in Oshawa helped speed up the bail process up, justice offi- cials say. Through a satellite feed, prisoners held at Oshawa police headquarters can ap- pear on a courtroom monitor for routine adjournments as well as weekend bail hearings, known as WASH (Weekend and Statutory Holiday) court, reducing the number of cases to start each week, says Ms. MacKinnon. “That second bail court has alleviated tons of pressure. It has really improved things,” said lawyer Brian Scott. Still, clients who are good candidates for bail often find themselves behind bars sever- al days, especially if the Crown is contesting their release. Brendan Crawley, spokesman for the Ministry of Attorney General, said in most cases where the Crown is con- senting to release, bail hear- ings are held within 24 hours of a person’s arrest. In cases where Crown is op- posing release, an accused is brought before a justice of the peace within 24 hours and “given an opportunity to have a bail hearing,” Mr. Crawley in- sisted. Local lawyers such as Paul Farquharson, however, say that isn’t the case. “Today, for example, there are 60 (prisoners) on the list and only one bail court is run- ning. I can tell you no one is getting a bail hearing today,” lawyer Paul Farquharson said Wednesday during a break in court at 242 King St. E. While prepared to hold a hearing for one of his clients, he said the Crown was oppos- ing bail. Since a contested bail hearing usually takes an hour, sometimes more, there simply aren’t enough hours in a day to hold more than a handful. The end result is that only a lucky few prisoners will actual- ly get bail hearings, while the rest will be remanded to an- other day. “Mine’s not going to be heard. By the time all the ad- journments are done, almost the whole day has been taken up,” Mr. Farquharson complained. Mr. Crawley acknowledged “in some cases there is a need to remand because of overcapacity,” and said the government is looking at ways to reduce the waits. But long court dockets aren’t the problem, he said. “A large volume of bail hearings get adjourned because defence counsel is not available in court when their client is called,” he said. The reason for that, said Mr. Fa rquharson, is that Oshawa’s 10 provincial criminal courts are located in separate buildings at opposite ends of the city, and lawyers are often required to be at both locations for different clients. Of those given the nod of approval by the Durham unit of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federa- tion (OSSTF), four were elected to the Durham District School Board on Monday. Peter Tumey, OSSTF Durham president, said no demands are placed on the endorsed candidates. He said the union’s endorsements couldn’t be compared with Toronto police favouring mayoral candidate John Tory, which caused some con- troversy. “There is a difference between people who carry a gun and people who carry a piece of chalk,” he said. Mr. Tumey said Durham OSSTF in the past has endorsed candidates and offered financial support at election time, noting most are happy to receive it. Late last week he said none of the contenders had picked up their cheques. He doesn’t have a problem with endorsing contenders, noting there are precedents. “Unions have been able to do so, just as business have been able to do so and individuals as well,” said Mr. Tumey. He said the unit’s political action committee composed a question- naire for all trustee candidates, re- viewed the responses and made de- cisions based on them. Some ques- tions, like one asking if candidates support teachers right to strike, re- ceived more weight than others. However the committee in making choices “tried to make it as reason- ably objective as possible,” and in general was looking for solid sup- porters of public education. If the committee found no one in a jurisdiction warranted an endorse- ment, they left part of the slate blank. Teachers endorsed two can- didates in Oshawa (three are elect- ed) and did not make a choice in south Ajax, which elects one trustee. Durham OSSTF endorsed Blair Young and Ria Budhu in Pickering, Michael Barrett and Kathleen Hop- per in Oshawa, Daniel Healy in north Ajax, John Dolstra and Tim Pollock in Whitby, and Steve Martin in Scugog. Paul White Election Campaign Regional Councillor – Ward 1 – City of Pickering Pickering meeting slated for Wednesday BByy CChhrriiss HHaallll Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM — Scugog Town- ship was the first stop for Durham economic develop- ment officials who will be touring the Region over a seven-day span looking for input for their new Rural Eco- nomic Strategy document. Doug Lindeblom, Durham’s director of economic develop- ment and tourism, and Pauline Reid, the research and policy adviser to Regional Chairman Roger Anderson and Chief Administrative Of- f icer Garry Cubitt, were joined by about a dozen peo- ple - including Scugog Town- ship officials and representa- tives from various environ- mental and agricultural agen- cies - at Scugog council cham- bers on Wednesday (Nov. 12) afternoon for an informal two- hour meeting. The goal of the meeting was two-pronged: to collect input from the various groups for the Durham Re- gion delegate heading to Mil- ton on Nov. 22 for a Greater To ronto Area Agricultural Symposium and Action Plan meeting and to gather input for a Rural Economic Strate- gy (RES). The RES, explained Mrs. Reid, would fall under the um- brella of Durham’s new Com- munity Strategy Plan (CSP), which outlines Durham’s community and regional mis- sions, as well as six strategic objectives - transportation, environment, communities, well-being, economy and part- nerships. The RES, stresses Mrs. Reid, would be part of the community plan entitled ‘Growing Together’ and would “not just be a docu- ment on the shelf; the policies outlined in this document would be put to good use.” During the workshop - a total of five are planned for across Durham Region - those in attendance were asked to outline their thoughts and concerns on a number of agriculture-related issues. Protecting and preserving farmland as well as increasing wages and improving the overall image of farmers were suggested. A need for a rural economic development officer for North Durham was brought up, as well as the perceived lack of sup- port for agricultural practices from upper-tier governments. To combat these issues, the small crowd suggested work needed to be done on increasing the public’s awareness of how food is brought from fields to the grocery store; the need to examine and promote niche markets, such as organics; expand- ing educational opportunities, such as linking local schools with the Uni- versity of Guelph’s agricultural stud- ies program; and instituting mentor- ing programs to encourage those with an interest in farming to be paired off with area farmers. Tourism was also an issue ad- dressed, however most of those on hand pointed out the high cost of li- ability insurance deterred them from opening up their farm to public visi- tors. Future meetings are planned for Uxbridge on Nov. 17 (7 to 8:30 p.m.), Brock on Nov. 18 (7 to 8:30 p.m.) and Pickering on Nov. 19 (7 to 8:30 p.m.). A second meeting was held last night in Clarington. Durham officials are hoping to have a draft copy of the Rural Eco- nomic Strategy completed and avail- able to the public for review by mid- December. For more information on the meetings, please call Mr. Linde- blom at 905-723-0023, ext. 3273. I was given many different pills to tr y and find the one that would work for me. My body decided it didn’t like one of the prescriptions and I gained weight at a phenominal rate. I couldn’t stand to look in the mirror and I was embarrassed to go into public. I knew that I was the only one who could cure my depression, so I decided to take it one step at a time and the first step was to lose weight. After dropping 80 Ibs., my self- esteem raised, my family and friends noticed a dramatic change in my attitude and I was weened off my medications. Everyone knows that with a decrease in temperature in the fall we must do certain chores around the house to ready it for the winter. The game is true for our car, including antifreeze and a thinner oil. But how many of us are aware of the need to “shape up”, to ready our bodies and muscles for the start up of that new ski or hockey season. Healthy feet and ankles must be fit and strong to act as accelerators, steering, brakes and shock absorbers. Any weakness to these extremities can lead to injuries and even the end of a season of participation. A fitness program should begin in the early fall to ready yourself by the sign of the first flakes. For skiing, strong quads and abdominal muscles are most important. Knee bends, sit-ups, crunches and skipping rope all help to strengthen your quadriceps and abdominal muscles. Racquet sports are equally benef icial in maintaining cardiovascular benefits and reaction time. Greater flexibility allows for a wider range of motion and minimizes the chance of strains. Stretch antagonistic muscle groups to maintain a point of tightness, hold for 40 to 60 seconds and release. Repeat each stretch three times. Strength of muscles is also important but overdoing it can lead to muscles tears. Wa rm-ups are most important before beginning the activity especially for cold weather sports. We idle our cars on cold winter days, but are we as kind to our bodies? Warm-up exercises help stretch muscles and allow for greater mobility. This minimizes the chance of injuries by allowing the muscles to be more responsive and act as better shock absorbers. Stream the part of the body used in the activity; for example, your legs in skiing or skating when warming up but also do upper body circular arm swings. A cool down period after the activity is also important. A sauna or whirlpool followed by a cool shower will help. Stop the activity when you’re tired. Remember, more injuries occur on that last run of the day when your fatigue hampers your reactive time and you are not paying attention. Winter sports require proper clothing. Upper body layering will keep you warmer and always wear a hat to prevent heat loss. Proper foot wear includes insulated waterproof boots or shoes. Socks must remain dry to prevent the occurrence of frostbite. Those suffering from pre-existing circulatory problems such as diabetes or Raynaud’s Disease should consult their medical doctor. Ski boots and skates should fit properly for a safe and uneventful activity. If the boots or skates are too loose, toes quickly get irritated in the toe box. If they are too tight, pressure leads to blisters and abrasions causing painful feet which may compromise control and lead to injuries or accidents. Tight boots or skates can compromise control and lead to injuries or accidents. Tight boots or skates can compromise circulation. Do not put children in hand-me-downs. Skates that are too large or wide may lack proper ankle support leading to strains, sprains or even fractures. Runners in the winter may unconsciously change their foot strike pattern which can lead to overuse injuries. To increase traction on slippery surfaces, runners may land with the entire foot instead of the natural heel-to-toe strike. Lateral slippage may lead to groin pulls. Some runners are trying spikes that fit over their shoes when jogging in icy areas. Some problems to watch out for are: 1) FROSTBITE: Skin freezes when exposed to cold temperatures and high winds. With longer exposure blood vessels constrict and skin colour changes from blue to white. A feeling of numbness or burning may indicate frostbite. Wet feet are more prone to frostbite as are people with previous history of frostbite. Prevention involves changing wet clothing and avoiding the use of alcoholic beverages. Shield yourself from high winds and keep moving. Treatment involves putting f ingers in armpit touching warm skin. Remove clothing from the affected area Continued on next page DURHAM DENTAL CENTRE 135 Harwood Ave. N. More and more women are using phytoestrogens, such as isoflavones found in soy plant, to tailor their menopausal therapy in a natural way. Equifem-Balance’s main potential benefits reside in its soy isoflavones content and include fewer menopausal symptoms (hot flushes, night sweats, etc.), a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Equifem-Mood is a unique remedy for improving general well-being and mood. Equifem-Mood is especially designed to ease symptoms of menopause or PMS such as mood-based symptoms like nervousness and irritability. Immerse the affected area in warm (40C) water (20 - 30 minutes) until the affected area turns red. If blisters develop, add an antiseptic such as Betadine to the skin. If no water is available, keep affected areas warm with blankets or in contact with other person’s skin. See your medical doctor as soon as possible. 2) BLISTERS: Friction from ill-fitting foot gear can cause blisters. Do not pop a blister as it will then more easily infect. If it breaks on its own, use an antiseptic such as Betadine and cover with a sterile bandage. 3) HYPOTHERMIA: This affects the entire body and involves loss of body heat. Initially shivering will generate more body heat. If shivering stops, a person is not necessarily war med, and this is sometimes a war ning sign. Continued exposure to cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia. This is a medical emergency and professional care should be sought. 4)STRAINS AND SPRAINS: These are common especially with skiing and skating. They should be created with rest, ice compressions and elevate (RICE). Winter can be a fun season if proper care is taken. Attention to muscle flexibility, proper clothing and war m-up exercises will ensure a season of injury free fun. It’s important to invest in solid hand tools, power tools and accessories designed to meet the most rigorous quality standards. For a basic start-up kit, you’ll need a hammer, different-sized nails, a tape measure, a Double Grip screwdriver, pliers, a 22-inch hand saw, a set of metric wrenches and a set of hexagonal wrenches. You may also need a T-square, joint clamps, a carpenter’s level and a rope. A starter kit isn’t complete without an all- purpose knife, a putty knife, scissors, a set of wood drill bits, an 3/8-inch power drill, a cordless electric screwdriver and a palm sander. He said he received a lot of calls Tuesday asking him to seek the nomination after Mr. Shepherd an- nounced he would not run for re- election, but Mayor Mutton doesn’t want to leave his current position. He did not rule out the possibility of seeking the position in the future. “It is something I might be inter- ested in, in the future, but there are so many projects I want to see come to fruition,” he said. Mayor Mutton was re-elected for his second term as mayor in Mon- day’s municipal election by an over- whelming majority of Clarington voters. He said he couldn’t leave his position after 90 per cent of voters supported him. Wanting to watch his children grow up was also an important fac- tor behind his decision and he added he wouldn’t consider the fed- eral position until his children are in university. He said it would be a family decision. “The public is going to see John Mutton as mayor as long as they keep electing me,” he said. They put off finishing one project, skip studying for a quiz, miss a couple of homework deadlines, don’t bother to try to chase a teacher down to decipher the stuff they didn’t understand in class, and bingo, they are behind-perhaps even floundering. Soon motivation disappears and the old, “Who cares about this stuff anyway? It’s not important to my life” attitude begins. Trouble is, parents often don’t discover these goings-on until much later from a report card or parent/teacher interview. So what happens when our kids start back to school seemingly motivated and then lose that momentum? Where does their motivation go? Fo rget about yelling, pleading or reasoning. It will all fall on deaf ears. You really only have two choices: You can enforce study time and impose punishments for failures, or you can become part of the solution. It’s your choice. For years I believed words could help. After raising five children, and working with thousands more, I have changed my mind. Simple actions will help-not words. Start with organization. Post a family calendar on the wall and write everything on it. Don’t skip a day. You have to set the example. Follow up by spending five minutes before homework time to review your child’s school day planner or agenda. Make sure that all homework, assignments, social events and family events are entered and ticked off when complete. Don’t skip a single day. It will establish a life-long habit that is important. Before your child begins homework, you must sit down and review the following list: a) Do you know what is expected? b) Do you know how to do this activity? Do you have the skills? c) What will you do first? Show me. d) How long will it take? Set a goal or deadline for each question. When your child has actually started the first task, leave him/her until the time has expired for the f irst one then check to make sure it is completed. If it is, congratulate and set a time for the second task. If it isn’t, stop, take a break and then review why it is taking longer. You will only have to do this for a few weeks until it will become a habit. Now you have a child on the road to becoming organized and knowing what to do and how. What else is necessary? Skills are certainly important. While you are working with your child, you may discover gaps in skills, understanding or problem solving strategies that may have developed as he/she fell behind. It is critical to fill the gaps and develop these skills so that your child can achieve success at school and build the confidence to become a self-motivated learner. Oxford Learning was voted Best Children’s Tutorial Service in 2003 by Ajax/Pickering News Advertiser readers. Oxford can help children build their skills, learn new, effective learning strategies and develop the confidence to succeed at school. Call Oxford today in Ajax or Pickering at 905-420-3141 to find out how they can help your child learn how to succeed at school this year. School stresses - actions, not words By. R.N. Whitehead, Ph. How do they store music in such a small amount of space? MPEG is the acronym for Moving Pic- ture Experts Group. This group has de- veloped compression systems used for video data. The MPEG compression system includes a subsystem to com- How MP3s work press sound, called MPEG audio Layer- 3. We know it by its abbreviation, MP3. The MP3 format helps reduce the number of bytes in a song without af- fecting the quality of the song’s sound too much. The goal of the MP3 format is to compress a CD-quality song by a fac- tor of 10 to 15. With MP3, a 32-megabyte (MB) song on a CD compresses down to about 3 MB. This lets you download a song in minutes rather than hours, and store hundreds of songs on your com- puter’s hard disk without taking up that much space. We use compression algorithms for images all the time. For example, a GIF file is a compressed image. So is a JPG file. We create ZIP files to compress text. So we are familiar with compression al- gorithms for images and words and we know they work. To make a good com- pression algorithm for sound, a tech- nique called perceptual noise shaping is used. This process is built around the way human beings hear sound. For ex- ample, there are certain sounds that the human ear cannot hear, and there are certain sounds that the human ear hears better than it does other sounds. If there are two sounds playing simulta- neously, we hear the louder one but can- not hear the softer one. So if you elimi- nate all the parts of the song that the human ear does not hear very well, you can reduce the file size quite a bit with- out changing the sound very much. A sound format that works only on a computer is fairly limit- ing. To let you take MP3s any- where, electronics manufactur- ers have developed portable MP3 players. These units are small computers that use flash memory or a small hard disk to hold the music. All the players currently on the mar- ket include a software application that lets you transfer MP3 files into the play- er. Most players also include utilities for copying music from CDs or Web sites and the ability to create custom play lists. The MP3 player is a great example of the invention process. All the compo- nents in a typical MP3 player are exist- ing technologies but by combining these components in a new way, and writing some code to control it all, manufactur- ers have created an entirely new line of consumer products! You can use ripper software to copy a song from a CD onto your hard disk. Then you use an encoder to compress it into MP3 format so that you can play it on your computer or take it with you on your MP3 player. Markham Marauders win de- fensive battle in bowl semifinal contest BByy AAll RRiivveetttt Sports Editor PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ——A controversial call denied the St. Mary Catholic Sec- ondary School Monarchs of a pos- sible date in the Golden Horse- shoe Bowl-East championship game. As it was, the Monarchs, who entered Friday afternoon's Gold- en Horseshoe Bowl-East semifinal game with an undefeated 9-0 record, will go home and the Markham District High School Marauders will move on to the final after a 7-0 victory on a muddy field at the Oshawa Civic Stadi- um. Durham Region teams were shut out of the bowl final at To r onto's SkyDome Thursday af- ternoon as the Marauders — the Yo rk Region champions — will meet the independent school champion St. Andrew's Saints from Aurora. St. Andrew's crushed Oshawa's Paul Dwyer Saints 41-0 in the other semifinal tilt. With the Monarchs trailing 7-0 in the third quarter and the Ma- rauders threatening deep in St. Mary territory, it appeared St. Mary got the big play it needed to turn the tide. Brandt Gordon picked up a Markham fumble on the St. Mary five-yard line and re- turned the ball 105 yards to the end zone. The touchdown, however, didn't stand. A blocking-from-behind in- fraction was levelled against the Monarchs, as a St. Mary player, according to the officials, got a hand on Marauders' quarterback Andrew Gillis, who was the last player with any chance of prevent- ing Gordon from reaching the end zone. In retrospect, the call was a bit- ter pill to swallow for the Mon- archs, especially since the slippery field conditions and the switch from four-down to three-down football for the Golden Horseshoe Bowl semifinal severely curtailed St. Mary's high-octane offence. "It certainly didn't look like it warranted a penalty," says St. Mary head coach Gordon Judges. "The game could have been ours except for a couple of calls. You can be sure I'll be checking the film to find out. I hate to sour grape the officials, but I'm going to have to check the film." Two plays later, the Monarchs appeared to have the ball in the end zone again. This time, Mon- archs' quarterback Erik Glavic connected with wide receiver Aaron Racioppa on a 33-yard re- ception in the end zone. This play, too, was called back by the offi- cials, owing to a flag thrown on Glavic for an illegal forward pass (a pass thrown beyond the line of scrimmage). Even more irksome for Judges was the atrocious field conditions that deteriorated further after the first semifinal game was played. The turf was slick and muddy, a factor that certainly played into the Marauders' hands, as they kept the ball on the ground throughout the entire game. Con- versely, the Monarchs were unable to get any form of passing attack on track. "The same thing happened to us last year," says Judges, eluding to the 2002 Golden Horseshoe Bowl semifinal loss to the Lakeshore Catholic High School Gators from Port Colborne, also played at the Oshawa Civic Stadi- um. "You have to prepare for this kind of thing. For fine athletes to play under these field conditions was awful. The field conditions were absolutely atrocious for the high-powered speed attack that St. Mary has. I don't want it to sound like sour grapes because Markham had to play on the same field." The lone touchdown in the con- test came on Markham's first of- fensive series of the game, cover- ing 67 yards on six plays. The big play of the series was a 45-yard run by slotback Andrew Hobbs up the middle, to put the Marauders first-and-10 on the St. Mary 21- yard line. Markham needed a big first-down push from its moun- tain-man six-foot, two-inch, 285- pound defensive tackle Wayne Brock, who lined up in the back- field and carried the ball 10 yards on a third-down-and-five play down to the St. Mary six-yard line. On the next play, quarterback Gillis handed off to Hobbs for the major. Judges praised the work in the trenches by his defence, which outside of Markham's first offen- sive series, was flawless in shut- ting down the Marauders' running attack. "The defence played their hearts out, just like they have all year," he says. Of special note was the tena- cious work of Gordon, who was named the defensive most valu- able player of the game for the Monarchs. He was in on 12 tackles in the game and had one fumble recovery. "He just played a stellar game," says Judges. "He'll definitely be going to the U.S. (to play colle- giately) and he has the marks as well." Glavic, having to abandon the passing game due to the tough field conditions, was still able to gain significant yards on the ground, calling his number on the line of scrimmage. He was the Monarchs' offensive MVP of the contest. NNOOTTEESS::The Monarchs were with- out one of its major offensive weapons for Friday's game. Run- ning back JJooee DDuubblliinn was injured in last Saturday's Durham Region final and didn't suit up for the game against Markham... DDUURRHHAAMM ——La Belle Province wasn't so cheery and the Bramp- ton Thunder brought the hammer down on the Telus Lightning in re- cent National Women's Hockey League play. The Telus Lightning (2-11-0-0 for 4 points, fourth in Central Divi- sion) was zapped 8-0 by the Brampton Thunder (8-2-1-0 for 17 points, second in Central Divi- sion) at the Ajax Community Cen- tre last Tuesday night. Prior to that, the Lightning dropped a couple of close ones during a re- cent road swing through Quebec. They suffered a 5-4 loss to the Montreal Axion and were blanked by the Quebec Avalanche 3-0, the first win for the Avalanche this season. The Telus Lightning played the Ottawa Raiders Saturday night at the Ajax Community Centre, hop- ing to break off a six-game losing string going into the game. Satur- day's game result was unavailable at press time. Against the Brampton Thun- der, Telus was downed by a strong Brampton side led by the scoring exploits of national team mem- bers Vicki Sunohara, who potted a hat trick, and Jayna Hefford, who bagged a pair of goals. Telus trailed 3-0 after 20 minutes and 6- 0 after the second period. The Thunder added two more for good measure in the final stanza. The Thunder is loaded with tal- ented national team members, es- pecially in the forward ranks. Most troubling for the Telus squad, however, was Brampton's size ad- vantage. "We've had more trouble with Brampton this year than with the To ronto Aeros and it has more to do with size," says Telus head coach Peter Perram of the Thun- der. "They're a big team and we aren't. Their physical play is a big factor." In back-to-back games in Que- bec, Telus met the Montreal Axion (12-0-3-0 for 27 points, first in East Division) first and were poised for victory with a 4-3 lead nearing the midway point of the final period. The hosts, however, tied it with seven minutes to go and won it with a goal in the last two minutes of play. Ashley Riggs led Telus with two goals; Nikki Leone and Mandy Coe tallied one each. Adding as- sists were Kristen Marson, Leone, Sarah Reid, Joanne Eustace, Brenda Reynolds and Melanie Roach. Against the Quebec Avalanche (1-11-2-2 for 6 points, third in East Division), the Lightning fired 26 shots at Quebec goaltender Jessi- ka Audet, but was unable to light the red lamp. The Dolphins' tykes, atoms and peewees will all play for the Cen- tral Ontario Minor Football League (COMFL) titles at Kins- men Park in Pickering today (Sunday). The tykes play the Burlington Stampeders at 9:30 a.m.; the atoms face Burlington at noon, while the peewees will play Durham Region rival Oshawa Hawkeyes at 2:30 p.m. The Dolphins tykes (11-0) roared over the Scarborough Thunder 24-12 in semifinal action. The tykes scored on their first of- fensive series, with quarterback Richard Quittenton handing off to running back Dillon Campbell who took the ball to the end zone. Campbell scored again from 40 yards out on the Dolphins' next offensive play to put Ajax-Picker- ing in front 12-0 at the end of the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, fullback Cole Tudor scored a touchdown for an 18-0 Dolphins' lead at halftime. Defensive linebacker Alex Horodnyk recovered a Scarbor- ough fumble early in the fourth quarter and ran it in for a touch- down. Scarborough scored two touchdowns later in the quarter on the stingy Dolphins' defence to end the scoring. Horodnyk and safeties Matt Smith and Denver Wright were the defensive game stars. Mean- while, fullbacks Cole Tudor and Dustin Kaupp and offensive line- men Nathan Cheung, Bryan Derksen, Jackson Harding, Ryan Colvin, Raekwon Grant, Darrell Gonzales and Ashton Rochester were the offensive stars. Meanwhile, the atoms (11-0) prevailed 38-0 over the Oshawa Hawkeyes. Andre Shand returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown to begin the Dolphins' romp. Jor- dan Oram made his first of two extra points on the day. Kyle Goffe led the way with a pair of touchdowns. Jesse Kelly started the game at quarterback, giving way in the second half to Tosh Miller Francis who threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jor- dan Oram and a 60-yard screen pass to Goffe for a major score. Offensive linemen Josh Smith, Brent Peters, Ryan Ko, Ian To- bias, Matt Blum, Jamel Watson and Dave Hassell played well pro- viding running lanes for the team's backfield. The defence kept the Hawkeyes in check all day, led by Peter Iyamu, Matt Blum, Watson, Flori- an Schlosser and Brandon Mis- seri. Linebackers Alan Forsythe and Kyle Whelan continually dis- rupted the Oshawa offensive at- tack. Whelan had an interception in the game. Adrian Williamson and Greg Farrell played strong games patrolling the outside lanes. Darnell Brown also had a strong game making several tack- les and an interception that he ran back 55 yards for a touch- down. In the peewee semifinal game, the Dolphins (10-1) responded with a 24-0 shutout victory over the Burlington Stampeders to re- turn to the COMFL champi- onship for a second consecutive season. The peewees broke the game open scoring 16 unanswered points in the second quarter through a combination of passes from quarterback David Priest- man to receivers Cecil Cherrie, Travis Thomas and tight ends James McIntosh and Shayne Pin- nock, and the stellar running from running back Jermayne Goodridge and fullback Andrew Smith. Offensive linemen Shayne Pin- nock, Jide Utomi, Scott Blake, Taylor Rice, Greg Sheremeta, Michael Vahabi and James McIn- tosh were outstanding. Marc Gre- goire, Tyler Harding, Shawn Mur- phy, Andrew Lim, Andrew Quit- tenton, Alex Smeall and Mark Fe- dosen all contributed on offence. Linebackers Keith Hunter, Phil Roy, Tristan Ming, Andrew Smith, Jordan Nguyen, Cecil Cherrie and Kurtis Barrett were solid throughout. Defensive line- men Justice Mounsey, Michael Vahabi, Eric Degnan and Shayne Pinnock limited Burlington to lit- tle offensive production.
