Celia Klemenz/ News Advertiser photo Kids take responsibility seriously BByy MMiikkee RRuuttaa Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM — Hundreds of local students are valuable partners with bus drivers, educators and police in promoting school bus safe- ty - and it’s not something they have to do. It’s School Bus Safety Week, and each school day Durham’s public and Catholic school boards transport almost 29,000 students to school. In just over a month of the current school year, Durham police have trained roughly 1,800 Grade 5-8 students from across the region as foot and driveway and school bus safety patrollers at their schools. “The kids that are here, they all want to be here,” says Durham PC Dennis Omelanchuk, the elemen- tary school liaison officer for Ajax, at a two-day training session last week. “They’re dedicated and re- sponsible. It’s just one more thing they do for their school.” Bus safety patrollers vol- unteer at their school. The training involves a two- hour course that includes instructional videos, and practical training on actual buses, so patrollers know what to do in the event of an emergency. After train- ing, students must pass an exam before they can begin their duties. PC Omelanchuk says their role is far from being a token one. “They have complete control over what happens on the bus with the bus driver,” he says. The three bus patrollers are stationed at the front, middle and back of the ve- hicle. Their job is to keep order by ensuring that stu- dents are seated and not acting up, feet and gear are kept out of the aisle and the like. PC Omelanchuk describes the front pa- troller as “a secondary pair of eyes for the bus driver.” When the bus stops to pick up or let off passengers who have to cross the road, the front patroller exits the bus and assumes the “duty position:” 10 paces straight ahead of the vehicle. He or she then waits for the dri- ver’s signal that it’s OK for students to cross. When they are safely aboard or across the street, the front patroller looks underneath the bus to make sure it’s clear, and returns to the bus. If the bus driver is in- capacitated in an emer- gency, the front patroller is responsible for operating the front door and wind- shield exit or even stop- ping the bus. Similarly, the middle and rear patrollers are responsible for their emergency exits, in addi- tion to other duties. If a collision occurs at the front of the bus, for example, the rear patroller takes the lead in evacuating the pas- sengers. Foot and driveway pa- trollers help students cross roads and, with an adult patroller, board their par- ents’ vehicles in a safe manner. “I want to help the peo- ple at the school to make the school safe,” says Kaitlin Haddlesey, a Grade 6 student at Elizabeth B. Phin Public School in Pick- ering, of why she volun- teered. “I thought it might be good for the school, and it might be kind of cool,” adds her classmate, Jor- dan Lafranier. Keegan Ferguson, a Grade 8 student at Lester B. Pearson Public School in Ajax, has been involved in the safety program for three years. “I just like helping peo- ple, helping the kinder- gartens get in their cars,” he says. PC Omelanchuk says police “want to get more kids involved” in the pro- gram, noting it is open to students at both the Durham public and Catholic school boards. Durham police have been involved in school bus safe- ty for decades, he says, noting it is part of the force’s mandate. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, October 17, 2003 PAGE 3 A/P PICKERING TOWN CENTRE 13 55 KINGSTON RD (905) 837-1166 NEW ARRIVALS WEEKLY! The News Metroland Durham Region Media Group Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo BByy JJaannee MMccDDoonnaalldd Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM — A wee dram will no doubt be raised Oct. 18 in a toast to a spe- cial group. It’s the silver ju- bilee of St. Andrew’s Soci- ety for Women. Much has happened since the summer of 1978 when three women - Eliza- beth McMillan, Agnes Spence and Jean Simpson - sat around a kitchen table and came up with the idea to form a club. But their creation is not just a social club. It’s determined to uphold the customs and traditions of Scotland, while doing some good. Memories of the land of isles, lochs and burns are the bonds that have kept the women together, with a current membership of 65. Just like any other ethnic club in Canada, the women share their contacts and news from trips back to Scotland with one another. They are also there for each other in other ways. “It’s like family, a sister- hood,” says Mrs. Spence. “These are 25-year-old friendships. I lost my hus- band eight years ago and don’t know what I would have done without those women. They made the tea after the funeral. They were there for me.” The club also lends its energy and talents to com- munity projects and local charities. Donations have been made to the cancer society, muscular dystro- phy, multiple sclerosis and kidney organizations, the local historical society and the United Way, to name only a few of the dozens of groups and causes the women have assisted over the years. They’ve also been busy knitting more than 100 afghans for oncol- ogy patients at Lakeridge Health. “And we’ve given literally bags of stuff to the mater- nity ward over the years,” adds Mrs. Spence. “Every Christmas we give $100 to the Salvation Army and to St. Vincent’s Kitchen, plus canned goods to Simcoe Hall Settlement House.” Of course, the women did their part to help out when the Lockerbie air dis- aster occurred over their homeland in 1988 and again during the Dunblane primary school shootings in 1996. “We are of Scottish birth but we also helped out during the Manitoba flood,” she explains. “We’re split. We’re Canadian and we’re Scottish.” To add to the rich cultur- al mix the women have en- joyed for a quarter of cen- tury, is the sponsorship of a 14-year-old girl in Nicaragua. “She’s doing very well,” says a proud Mrs. Spence. “She’s trying to take com- puter training and she keeps us up to date. She’s very good in math.” The women’s society sends what adds up to about a dollar a day to help the Central American child, plus birthday and Christmas gifts. The women meet once a month, except in summer, have a business meeting to plan future events, share sandwiches and cakes fol- lowed by entertainment. The club runs dances throughout the year, pub nights and each year in November, members take a shopping trip to Buffalo. Robbie Burns’s (the Scot- tish poet) night is a special occasion the women cele- brate each year. They will dress up again this Hal- loween and bob for apples, and try something new for Remembrance Day, Nov. 11. “We’re asking the women to bring in memo- rabilia from any war, or any story about war,” says Mrs. Spence. “The club tries to think of something new. We have speakers from difference associa- tions. “We have a high old time for ourselves,” she adds. “But at the same time, we do something for others. We do something with our lives.” On Oct. 18, a roast beef dinner, followed by Scot- tish dancers and a piper, and then music for danc- ing will bring St. Andrew’s Society for Women - whose members hail from Bow- manville, Lindsay, Whitby, Ajax and Newcastle (by way of Scotland) - togeth- er to mark the 25th an- niversary. Any woman interested in the traditions and lore of Scotland is welcome to join as an associate mem- ber although seats on the executive are reserved for those of Scottish birth or parentage. There are St. Andrew’s societies throughout the world, named after the pa- tron saint of Scotland, but the local women’s group has no official affiliations. “We’re totally indepen- dent,” says Mrs. Spence. If you don’t, Durham Re- gion’s health department can tell you. Through the nutri- tious food basket program, the department annually updates the prices of 66 foods that are considered part of a healthy diet, said Deborah Lay, public health nutritionist. (The pricing, done each year in the spring, wasn’t conduct- ed this year since all public health staff were busy with the SARS outbreak.) The food basket program is mandated by the Province, which sets out what foods are priced and when, Ms. Lay said. Staff go to 12 different stores within Durham Region and get the prices of the 66 foods and then figure out the aver- age cost of feeding individuals and families, she said. Only basic foods are listed. Not included are foods from restaurants, packaged conve- nience foods, snack foods, frozen pre-cooked items, soups, sauces, flavourings and spices. Coffee, tea, condi- ments, sauces and spices are accounted for by a five-per- cent factor added to the total basket costs. The annual pricing “mea- sures the basic cost of eating healthily,” Ms. Lay said. “We want to know if it’s getting more expensive to buy food here.” And it is. “For a family of four, it costs $121.50 in 2002,” she said. “The year before, in 2001, it was $117.28. That represents a four- per-cent increase in one year and not everybody got a four- per-cent increase in pay. “For a lot of people, they consider their food budget a soft budget and will take some from it to help meet the rent.” The pricing is done in May and June, considered to be fairly neutral for costs, she said. That time avoids the higher produce costs of the winter, when many items have to be brought in from other countries, and the lower pro- duce costs of late summer and fall, from the local harvest, she said. When it comes to eating healthily, many people still don’t eat enough fruit and veg- etables. Canada’s Food Guide calls for people to eat five to 10 servings of fruit and veggies, she said. Dark green and brightly-coloured fruits and veggies, such as carrots, squash, peppers, broccoli, are the best bets as they are nutri- Cost of food is edging up ent-rich, Ms. Lay said. And don’t buy too much of any- thing at any one time, she said. “Buy what you need. Buy what you can consume. If you buy more, it’ll spoil and you’ll waste your food dol- lars.” The food basket price can be found at Durham Region’s Web site, www.region.durham.on.ca. Also to be found there is the Region’s food re- sources directory which lists places in Durham where food is available for purchase. For more information on healthy eating, call Ms. Lay at 905- 723-5338. These are perhaps some of the most dangerous words a parent could utter. When we assume our kids could not get caught up in the group mentality where a bunch of children taunt a weaker child in the schoolyard, we also assume we don't need to educate them on the effects and perils of bullying. But we do. Children may not even realize the impact their cruel words might have on a child dealing with disabilities, a troubled home life or other insecurities such as weight or academic ability. Perhaps our children would never lead the fight but often it is 'good' kids who will join the pack, not wanting to be the person singled out themselves. And as harmful as taunt- ing can be, the reality is things can, and do, get even more out of hand. Before you know it our good kids find they're in the middle of something they can't control and they are left to face consequences they never imagined. And then there is the other side of the coin. The children who are bullied, whose parents have no idea what their kids are up against when they leave the house in the morning. Perhaps these children are too ashamed to admit to mom and dad they aren't popular at school. They feel like failures and don't want to let their parents down. Either way, Toronto police constable, local resident and au- thor on the subject, Kevin Guest, says it is imperative parents take the time to broach this touchy subject at home. He brought this message to an Ajax school, Thursday. Const. Guest has seen what can happen first hand both profession- ally and in his personal life when bullying occurs. When he was in Grade 13, a friend of his was murdered by her boyfriend. The Durham District School Board does have a code of conduct and a number of programs such as 'Together We Light the Way,' a program to help students develop self-es- teem and responsibility. There's 'Values, Influence and Peers,' another program aimed at helping students deal with peer pressure and making good decisions. But the school alone can do only so much. As parents, we must educate our chil- dren on the values we hold dear and, as importantly, set an example of tolerance toward others. And, we must give them the strategies to deal with situations as they arise, so they will not become a statistic, on either side of the bullying equation. They gave their lives so we could choose TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: Most Canadians should be aware of the recent death of two of our young sol- diers due to hostile action in Afghanistan. We should also not forget the previous lives lost to friendly fire in an earlier incident. These guys gave their lives doing their duty for Canada. I could not help thinking that all these lives have been wasted if as we are happily going about our daily lives we do not stop to think what dying for Canada means. At this time of political activity, recently with the provincial elections and now the municipal variety, a thought came into my head whereupon we could perhaps honour these fallen heroes. They died for Canada, still one of the greatest coun- tries in the world. We are the envy of many other nations because of our de- mocratic values. My notion is we can show our respect by using the system these guys paid the ultimate price for. I refer to the right of every Canadian to choose who will represent them in gov- ernment be it federal, provincial or local. How sad it was and how ashamed we should be that approximately 55 per cent of our fellow Ontarians failed to exercise their right in the provincial elections. You have young men who have perished to protect this right and yet these apa- thetic people did not bother to register a vote. Let’s register a vote dedicated to those soldiers and the many that have fallen in two previous world wars to maintain our right of freedom of choice. On Nov. 10, VOTE, VOTE, VOTE. A/P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, October 17, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Did you enjoy fire prevention week? Yes, it was a hotbed of excitement wasn't it. It's taken on a different feeling for me this year, however, after I spoke to a fire-prevention inspector. The truth of how dangerous fire is was brought close to home. When Inspector Paul Hunt rat- tled off some alarming statistics, I was startled. There are people out there who don't even check their fire alarms on a regular basis to make sure they are in good condi- tion and with fully charged batter- ies. Can you believe it? Well, you should. According to the stats, half the people reading this are guilty of the crime of fire alarm negligence. Is it overstating it to call it a crime? No. According to Mr. Hunt's statis- tics, 95 per cent of homes in On- tario have detectors (how can even 5 per cent be so dumb?) and only 47 per cent of all of those detectors even work, the inspector says. Mr. Hunt said he does charge people if they are found to have no working fire alarms. Unfortunately, the charge is pretty low, involving a fine of just over a couple of hundred dollars. Not exactly a big deterrent. Still, it's good the law will punish someone for not adequately pro- tecting a home and more impor- tantly the people who live there. The plan around our home this week is to look at all the fire-pre- vention literature we can get our hands on. We're going to plan an es- cape route and tutor both our five- and three-year-old about what to do in case of a fire. The fire department where we live, has all the literature but we've never held family meetings before to ensure we are all fire conscious. If you haven't planned an escape route for your family, get to work on that now. Look for fire-prevention week displays at local malls or call the fire department. A fire-prevention officer will be glad to talk to you. Mr. Hunt was sure glad to talk to me about fire prevention. One final note to leave you with; candle fires are the only type of fire actually rising in occurrence. If you use candles, don't leave them burn- ing when you are not around. If Mr. Hunt doesn't respond to another fire caused by candles, it would sure make him happy. Dave Stell is news editor at the News Advertiser’s sister papers, Oshawa-Clarington-Whitby This Week. It’s not responsible,” says the 27-year-old. “The only promise I can truly make people is to serve their greatest needs.” This is his second at- tempt at the Ward 2 city seat, falling behind frontrunner Bill McLean. He says sup- porters urged him to run again because they weren’t happy with the way the post was being handled. The final straw, he says, was earlier this fall, when Pickering council lowered the speed limit on all local and collector roads in the City. “I don’t think it’s the answer people are look- ing for,” he adds. “I’ve been passed on Liverpool Road doing 40. That type of behaviour has to be curbed somehow but putting up 40 km/h signs isn’t going to address it.” Mr. Evely moved to Pickering when he was six months old, and returned to live there in the same house he grew up in after graduating from the University of Windsor four years ago. He operates his own corrugated box compa- ny and an interactive marketing consulting firm, but insists the two leave him with a flexi- ble enough schedule to take on public service. “I own my time with any venture I do,” Mr. Evely says. “And the community benefits more (by electing me to council) because I’m putting forward my best years, not my retirement years.” Mr. Evely is the vice-president and registrar of the Pickering Kinsmen and Kinette Club and also acts as public relations director to the Pickering East Shore Community Association. If elected, he would like to see public access to Pickering’s waterfront be maintained, the Duf- fin-Rouge Agricultural Preserve left off-limits to developers, and the City’s parks and streets kept clean and safe. PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG — If Bill McLean is re-elected, he plans to push for three police officers to patrol parks, playgrounds and plazas in Ajax and Pickering on a regular basis. “I want to manage the problem, not sim- ply respond to it,” he says. “Crime on our streets and in our parks needs to be ad- dressed.” A former Toronto Police officer, Mr. McLean spent 31 years on the force be- fore retiring recently and taking up real es- tate as a second ca- reer. He ran for the Wa rd 2 City seat in 19 97 but lost to Mark Holland. He returned in 2000 to finish first in a four-candidate race for the post. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the job,” he says, of his decision to run again. “I enjoy working with City staff. I enjoy solving people’s prob- lems and I enjoy having input into running the City and helping us grow.” Future growth and development is another issue that will need to be addressed, but Mr. McLean says it’s important the City continue with its growth management study and coun- cil take a hard look at the final results. Connecting the east and west spits of Frenchman’s Bay should also move forward while the City “is on a roll” improving the wa- terfront. Also among his priorities is expanding part- nerships with the private sector to create new recreational facilities for youth, and moving forward with the integrated waste manage- ment system. Mr. McLean is chairman of the Pickering Ajax Whitby (PAW) Animal Services Committee, and sits on the site plan commit- tee, civic awards selection committee, Picker- ing museum foundation as well as being the City’s police liaison. He has lived in Pickering for 23 years, where he resides with his girl- friend Dianna. He has an 18-year-old son Brandon, and a 21-year-old daughter Shan- non. 2003 MUNICIPAL ELECTION - PICKERING CITY COUNCILLOR WARD 2 BBRRIIAANN EEVVEELLYY BBIILLLL MMCCLLEEAANN Correction (ward 1) PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG — A story, which ran in the Oct. 10 edition of the News Advertiser contained an error. Ho 2003 MUNICIPAL ELECTION - PICKERING WARD 2 BByy LLeesslleeyy BBoovviiee Staff Writer PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG — Millennium Square, the Great Lakes Nautical Village, Progress Frenchman’s Bay East Park - in recent years, much work has been done on Pickering’s waterfront. Now charting a course for the City’s jewel will fall upon a new council for the next three years. Consensus is the first priority should be reha- bilitating Frenchman’s Bay. “I think council has done a really good job, doing what can be done quickly along the waterfront,” says Craig Bam- ford, who vice-chaired the 2001 Mayor’s Waterfront Task Force and now sits on the City’s waterfront co-ordi- nating committee. “The City has worked on the east and west trails, now I think the focus has to be Frenchman’s Bay,” he adds. Established in 1997, the wa- terfront task force, made up of several levels of govern- ment, outside agencies, and residents, with the aim of creating a comprehensive vi- sion along Pickering’s shores. A healthier bay was always identified as first priority by the task force’s final report, but there were certain time constraints because certain studies had to be done first, Mr. Bamford explains. With those studies now complete, the City is in the position of approaching other sectors and levels of government to help fund an $8-million storm water man- agement pond system to help f ilter contaminants from the bay, he says. A pontoon boat is impor- tant to help bridge the gap between the east and west spits, and one of the task force recommendations as part of the entire waterfront project, Mr. Bamford says. “But those are the orna- ments, you have to polish the jewel first,” he says. The plan to rehabilitate Frenchman’s Bay also allows for the ability to wind a series of trails around the storm water management ponds, he points out. Now that the studies are complete, Picker- ing has the information to support grant applications from such programs as the Great Lakes Cleanup Fund. “I would suggest Picker- ing’s contribution could be the pontoon boat and the trails,” Mr. Bamford adds. He believes chances for outside funding are good, considering a number of agencies have already taken part in the studies. And with Pickering’s outgoing mayor now the new MPP-elect, it’s likely Wayne Arthurs will be a strong voice for the project, having struck the task force himself in 1997, Mr. Bamford says. Mr. Arthurs says the City can count on his lobbying on its behalf with various ministries within his new government. “The City has put a lot of energy into the waterfront to lay the groundwork but the health of the bay is important and I think that’s where the focus should be,” he says. He’d also like to see Pickering push forward with negotiations to bring more lands along the trail into public ownership, and a return to emphasizing the natural features of the bay. The pontoon boat is a good idea, Mr. Arthurs adds, but he feels it’s not something that has to be done immediately. It’s an important part of its long-term use. He disagrees with critics, who argue too much attention is being paid to the waterfront at the ex- pense of other areas of Pickering. Council has worked hard to secure other projects for areas to the north like a future fire hall along the 407. Mr. Bamford sees nothing wrong with the City’s focus, considering its long-term implications and the fact most of Pickering’s residential tax base is centred around the bay. “We’re basically retrofitting the existing watershed to the standards of any subdivision in Pickering,” he adds. “The longer the City leaves this, the more expensive it will get.” Tapping into the waterfront WWAAYYNNEE AARRTTHHUURRSS Council’s focus should now be on Frenchman’s Bay Keeping an eye on the news News Advertiser Metroland Durham Region Media Group times, special needs, Ms. Maenza said. Captain’s Walk is the first release of residences which allow for rezoning of the main floor for commercial or retail usage and is part of the $40-million waterfront redevelopment plan in the City of Pickering. Years of public and private input has created a master plan designed to rejuvenate the City’s prime waterfront area at the foot of Liverpool Road with a combination of residential, commercial and public areas designed with a nautical flair. The waterfront area has already begun its transformation with the creation of the new Millennium Square and Waterfront Boardwalk. Ongoing revitalization of the area includes completion of the waterfront trail, remodeled marinas, shoreline upgrades, new parklands, new road designs, wide walkways, and street lighting all designed with a coastal ambiance. Captain’s Walk will surely offer an impressive address for those who seek to live, work and play by the waterfront. Glenbrook Homes presents a collection of three-storey freehold townhome residences with rear garages and rear laneways, as well as a 72-car commercial parking lot behind which is owned and operated by the homeowners. The homes are being offered as residences but the main floors can be rezoned commercial after closing to accommodate 800 sq. ft. for professional offices, retail, a restaurant, pub, nautical store, salon, gift shop, or an antique shop. The possibilities are endless! This elite address offers appeal to professionals (lawyers, insurance brokers etc.) who want to run their company from home, or for someone who simply wants to rent out the retail space and earn an income. Townhome residences are priced from $349,900 and range from 2,400 to 2,800 sq. ft. of living space. All units have views of the lake and are within a 100 yards of the marina and boardwalk. Shopping, schools and all the amenities are just minutes away. The principle of Glenbrook Homes, Joseph Winters, has built both residential and commercial properties in Courtice and the Greater Toronto Area. Mr. Winters is an engineer and personally supervises all aspects of his projects. He believes in delivering a quality product at fair prices and would rather over-engineer his offerings than go with the norm. Glenbrook prefers to include as standard what many builders sell as upgrade. They have several optional packages for construction finishes and mechanicals to suit both the investor or the owner occupier of the homes. The teen was treated and released from hospi- tal after the incident, and was to be later examined by an eye specialist, Durham Regional Police said. The victim and a 17- year-old friend were hors- ing around near Duffin’s Bay Public School at about 9 p.m. when he was unintentionally hit in the eye by the projectile about the “size of a gum ball,” said Sergeant Jeff Galipeau. “They don’t qualify as a firearm, but they can still definitely cause some damage if they hit an eye or bare skin,” he said, adding the gun was seized. Constantly worried about his health and his own state of mind, he found himself wanting to avoid situations that made him feel anxious such as being alone, going to work and socializing. In time Mike realized he was not alone in his suffering. Anxiety disorder is the number one emotional problem in our country today. Mike will share the story of his recovery and provide coping skills at a FREE seminar open to the public in your area. Symptoms of anxiety, panic and depression include heart palpitations, chest pains, dizziness, stomach problems, bewildered & spaced out feelings, confusion, shortness of breath, scary thoughts, trembling or shaking, nervous or panicky feelings, feeling helpless and hopeless, loss of appetite, excessively tired, and easily prone to guilt. Generally people fear what Mike calls, “losing control”, having a heart attack, embarrassing themselves, or losing their minds. The Midwest Center For Stress and Anxiety, with whom Mike works, has done stress and anxiety seminars for companies such as Chrysler, AT & T, and McDonald’s. They have also been featured on OPRAH, REGIS and KATHY LEE and ‘THE VIEW’ with BARBARA WALTERS. If you cannot attend, please call 1-800-829-8137 for information. Along with many other municipalities, Pickering and Ajax will celebrate Waste Reduction Week (WRW) in Canada. As well as having proclaimed the week in both local councils, ‘Too Good to Waste’ posters have been placed in prominent areas. Also, the following events will help our citizens learn more about how to conserve our resources. * A challenge has been declared be- tween the Town of Ajax and the City of Pickering. Municipal staff will focus on the amount of garbage created in respective municipal buildings. On an unannounced day during the workweek, the total amount of items that appear in waste cans will be weighed. The office staff with the low- est per capita amount will be de- clared the winner. The losing munici- pality must fly the other flag for a day. * In Ajax, displays can be seen at the Ajax Community Centre and the McLean Community Centre. Picker- ing residents can gather 3Rs informa- tion at the Civic Centre and Pickering Recreation Complex. * On Saturday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m., Ajax’s main library will host a chil- dren’s theatrical play entitled, ‘Wanda Wasteful.’ Duffy the Duck, Ajax’s mascot, also will be entertain- ing the young audience. * Town of Ajax staff will continue the feasibility of setting up a Waste Ex- change Program (similar to Picker- ing’s) on its corporate Web site. The concept lists items both for residents and industry to request materials as well as give them away. Discarded items and industries’ off-cuts could be another’s treasure. * A school in Ajax will be selected to receive a class presentation on the practices of responsible waste man- agement. The purpose is to encour- age the next generation to be more conscious of the amount of waste that it generates. Of course, we need to educate and lead by example. * Earlier in October, students at Cadarackque P.S. learned about composting through the ‘Pee Wee at Castle Compost’ puppet show. Now, not only will food scraps and paper towels be diverted from landfill across the border, but they’ll also be dug into the school’s garden. Any school wishing to begin a worm bin can acquire a supply of red wiggler worms from John Lok, at 905- 427-2724. The Ajax-Pickering Road Watch program will have an informational display during mall hours on Oct. 18 and 19. It includes a Halloween colouring contest for kids up to 12 years. Road Watch is a community-run program that targets dangerous dri- vers on local roads. Residents fill out a citizen report form when they see a motorist driving aggressively, and the form ends up with Durham police, who send a letter to the vehicle owner. Young people can pick up a picture at the display, located near the eleva- tor on the mall’s upper level. After they take it home and colour it, drop the picture off at any of the Road Watch drop boxes in Pickering and Ajax. A list of locations is available at the display. First, second and third-place prizes will be awarded. The bike draw was the cli- max of a successful Headsfirst program, which provides en- forcement, education and re- wards to young people for bicy- cle-helmet use and safe-cycling practices. This summer, Durham Re- g ional Police officers issued more than 140 notices across the Region to youth under 18 seen cycling without their hel- mets. Offenders had the option of attending a two-hour educa- tion session instead of receiv- ing a summons to court. Police also awarded 250 seen wearing helmets with certifi- cates for free products at local businesses. Mandatory bicycle helmet reg ulations were introduced in 1995, and from 1997 to 2001, Durham has seen a 23 per cent decrease in hospitalizations due to bicycle-related injuries, said the health department. For more information on the Headsfirst program, contact the health department at 905- 723-8521 or 1-800-841-2729 ext. 2545, or visit www.region.durham.on.ca or the DRPS Web site at www.drps.ca. So tear down that old wallpaper, rip out that tiny medicine cabinet, remove the particleboard cabinet and start anew. What does the perfect bath look like to you? Think about it. Do you see a skylight? How about piped-in music or a telephone? Perhaps you envision a tub with soothing jets. These may seem like ridiculous ideas, but keep them in mind. You may be able to work some, if not all, of them into your new bath. Start by looking through magazines, paying attention to elements you admire most. Maybe it’s a colour scheme or a set of highly polished fixtures that catches your eye. Perhaps it’s the curtains or the way the tub is positioned in the corner of the room that delights you. Maybe it’s just the feeling you get when you look at that photo. Tear out pictures you like and keep them in a notebook. Use it to guide your choices when planning your new bath. Start by determining how much money you can afford to spend on the project and stick to that budget. There are lots of ways to get a high-end look without spending high-end dollars. Be a savvy and resourceful shopper. Colour is usually the first step. Deciding on a colour scheme may be a difficult task for you. Think about the colours that make you happy and relaxed. Try to imagine what a soothing room would look like and pull out those photos you clipped for additional ideas. Once you’ve made a decision on colour, think about the walls. Choosing the right wall covering can be diff icult. A wide range of paint f inishes can be applied and the selection of wallpaper is outstanding. Read the manufacturer’s usage recommendations before purchasing wallpaper. Wood paneling is another option. Beaded board gives a bathroom country charm and is readily available at affordable prices. As soon as you have a wall covering in mind, consider the fixtures. Are you looking for a bathroom with an Old-World feel or do you prefer a more modern look? Antique dressers fitted with sinks are popular, taking the place of standard cabinetry, while a contemporary pedestal sink gives a sleek impression. For large families or even a husband and wife, double sinks are practical. Browse the Internet or your local home improvement store for a wide selection. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with what’s available and the costs. Faucet f inishes can range from chrome to brass to baked- on enamel or gold plate. These can be brushed, polished or matte. Shapes, sizes and prices vary as well. Lighting is another important feature in the bath. It should be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Try wall sconces or down lighting for a soft glow. Cove lighting and a small chandelier can add a touch of elegance. Candles can really set the mood, but be sure to observe safety precautions and never leave them unattended. Flooring options are numerous, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Laminate flooring is very durable, easy to clean and can be installed over an existing floor, but once damaged, it must be replaced. Ceramic and stone tiles are water and stain resistant as well as elegant, but they can be slippery when wet and are hard on the feet. Hardwood floors have that warm look but are vulnerable to moisture. Carpet is warm and comfortable, but absorbs moisture and can mold and mildew. The choice is not an easy one. Once you have selected the major components in the room, consider the f inishing touches. Mirrors add dimension to a bath and reflect light. If room allows, a full-length mirror is a good idea for that one final look in the morning before work. In a large bath, try to incorporate a place for relaxation. A small, comfortable upholstered chair or a cushioned bench will find many uses. For a country look, add a country cabinet to your bath for towels and appliances. If the one you have is a bit too rustic, go ahead and paint it to fit into your color scheme. Include framed artwork or a favorite drawing one of your children made in school to personalize your bath. Plants also add a nice soft touch to a bath. They help to balance a room with many hard surfaces. If you have a window and the extra floor space, add a tall ficus. It will appreciate the high humidity and you’ll feel a unity with the outdoors. Any plant will add a splash of color but observe their light requirements. If you don’t have a window in your bath, choose a plant with low light requirements like Mother-in- Law’s Tongue. Creating the bath of your dreams may take some time, but if you use quality materials and pay special attention to details, you can achieve the results you desire. A/P PAGE 20 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, October 17, 2003 www.durhamregion.com When it comes to designing a child’s bedroom, there are a lot of elements you need to consider. For example, the most important aspect is whether it will it be a single child’s room or will it be shared? The size of the room will also limit what you can do. Last but not least, how you decorate the room will depend on whether the occupant is a boy or girl. Children who have their own bedroom obviously only need one bed. Depending on the size of the room, you can choose a single bed, double bed or captain’s bed. If your child plans on having friends sleep over from time to time, you might want to consider investing in a trun- dle bed that can be hidden under the regular bed when not in use. For bedrooms that are shared by two children, bunk beds are the best choice for smaller rooms. If the room is quite large, however, you’ll proba- bly have enough space for twin beds. Regardless of the size of the room, make sure there is enough space for doing homework, storing clothes, toys and other personal belongings. Kids will also want to proudly display their most prized possessions. If space is limited, an elevated or captain’s bed can double as a practical storage space. When it come to decorating, girls tend to prefer softer, dynamic colours while boys gener- ally prefer solid, darker shades. What’s more, linens tend to be more elaborate for a girl’s room, and more understated for a boy’s. Last but not least, specific themes continue to be popular decorating techniques for children’s rooms. More than 70 teens, aged 13 to 19, audi- tioned at Petticoat Creek Community Centre and Dunbarton High School last week for the Pickering Teen Idol contest. Sixteen were chosen - eight from each venue - to advance to semi-finals being held this week and next. At Dunbarton High School Wednes- day, five semi-finalists were chosen in part by a student ballot and a panel of judges. Tafari Davis, Lisa Manis, Melanie Campbell, Cierra MacDonald and Laura Hurst now advance to the finals Nov. 8. Neva Fraser, Sophia Mangov, Erin Wil- son, Karli Reeve, Kurayne Foster, Julia Arbuckle, Alysha Harris, and Katelyn Saynor now compete at a second semi- final Monday, Oct. 20 at Petticoat Creek Community Centre. Likewise, judges will chose five finalists from that competition to make a total of 10 performers squaring off against one another at the final event. "We started a youth council about a year ago," explained Lindsey Brenner, Pickering's youth program co-ordinator. "We went out and asked teens what events they would like to see and a couple said, 'How about a talent show?'" "A fter American Idol and Canadian Idol, I thought, 'How about a teen idol contest?'" she adds. "I knew it would be a big seller." Response has been good, especially among Grade 8 students, who are just at the young end of the age requirements for the contest. Much to organizers' de- light, a large number of them have ad- vanced to the semi-finals and finals, says Ms. Brenner. There will be five judges at the final held Nov. 8 at Petticoat Creek Communi- ty Centre from 7 to 10 p.m. They include: booking agent Chris McKee, of SL Feld- man and Associations; school teacher and songwriter/singer Artemis; a repre- sentative of Chalet Studios in Claremont, known for its work with such acts as Rush and Blue Rodeo; Durham Regional Police youth investigator Constable Leon Presner; and Jacquie McInnes, news and entertainment editor with the News Ad- vertiser. Grand prize for the top performer is a half-day of vocal recording time at Chalet Studios, a profile story by Rogers Televi- sion, a photo session from Pickering Photo, a $75 gift certificate from the Pick- ering Town Centre, and a chance to sing at a variety of Pickering special events in 2004. Other prizes range from a Fender Squire Stratocaster guitar or Yamaha PSR290 keyboard from Durham Music; a co-writing and demo recording session with Artemis; and a three-month squash and racquetball membership at Picker- ing Recreation Complex. A free shuttle bus will help take teens to and from the final. Check the City's We b site (www.cityofpickering.com) for pickup and drop off locations. The Paul James Band plays The Thirsty Monk on Oct. 25 - and it's no ordi- nary gig, but a CD release party. Mr. James and his band mates are touring to promote the 16-track, La Vie en Bleu record, which includes four new, original compositions. "It's songs that we do live a lot, and sort of frequently requested songs," he says. "It has a real live feel to it, not over-produced, like early Stones, early Beatles, early Animals." A touring musician for 35 years, Mr. James has spent most of them in Canada - by choice. "I decided I wanted to be a Canadian artist and that meant playing all 10 provinces," he says, noting it was a lot harder in the early days. "Now there is a big independent scene, but back then you were with a machete, cutting a road that didn't exist. There was no Much Music." Mr. James has per- formed with legends like Lightnin' Hopkins, John Hammond and a big influ- ence, Bob Dylan, who he says knows about the new record. "It's fantastic," he says of performing with the greats. "I mean, it's sort of like playing with your peers, the guys you learned from in a lot of instances." The new record is a de- parture from his recent discs. His last CD was made up of 16 original tracks, and before that he released an all-acoustic recording. This time, Mr. James says he got the idea for La Vie en Bleu from fans who call for their favourites at shows. "It's been a wonderful life," he says. "I'm still doing what I like and I feel strongly about it." What he likes best is per- forming live, and local resi- dents are in for a treat. "I think we're gonna give 'em three sets," says Mr. James. "We're gonna hit 'em right between the eyes." Thirsty Monk owner Christien Edgecombe wouldn't miss the show. A guitarist himself, he says he first saw Paul James perform in a seedy bar in To ronto when he was 19 years old and was blown away. "I don't normally work Saturday nights, but I plan on being here until 2 a.m.," says Mr. Edgecombe. The Paul James band takes the stage at 10 p.m. and there's a $5 cover charge. The Thirsty Monk is at 85 Kingston Rd. E., just east of Harwood. Concertgoers can buy the disc at the show, or by visiting the band's Web site, www.pauljamesband.com. Collingwood won 6-3. Panthers get the blues PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ----After a good ef- fort through 40 minutes against the Collingwood Blues Wednesday, the Pickering Boyer Pontiac Panthers let it slip away in the third period. Playing to a 3-3 tie through two periods, the Panthers were bowled over in the final frame, allowing the visiting Blues to score three unanswered goals en route to a 6-3 victory in OHA Ontario Provincial Ju- nior 'A' Hockey League action at the Pickering Recreation Complex. The loss puts the Panthers (4-5-3-0 for 11 points) in sev- enth spot in the South Confer- ence standings. Meanwhile, Collingwood (second in North Conference) improves its record to 9-3-1-2 for 21 points. Panthers' head coach John Winder noted his charges were in control in the second period, but couldn't bury their scoring chances. "We completely outshot them in the second period and we could have went ahead 6-3, but instead we came out of the period tied," says Winder. The Panthers trailed 2-1 after the first period, but vault- ed into a 3-2 lead in the second stanza before Collingwood scored a power-play marker with just more than three min- utes remaining in the frame. In the third period, the Blues scored two goals in rapid succession to pull away. The Blues added an insurance goal with 30 seconds remaining. Kyle Cunningham, Andrew Dissanayake and Ryan Annes- ley scored the Panthers goals. Richard Schofield, John Scrymgeour, Cunningham, Kyle Robinson, Phil McIlhone and Jeremy Whelan assisted. The Panthers have a busy weekend on the ice, starting off at the Pickering Recreation Complex where they host the Ajax Axemen Friday at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Picker- ing juniors travel to Vaughan to play the Vipers at 7:45 p.m. They end the weekend with a Sunday night tilt in Toronto against the St. Michael's Buzzers at 7 p.m. GGAAMMEE SSUUMMMMAARRYY Collingwood-6 @ Pickering-3 1st PERIOD 1. 6:38 Collingwood - Andrew McBride (T.J.
