The 18-year-old Pickering swimmer has been recommend- ed for a police commissioner’s citation after administering life- saving CPR to two drowning Markham men in Burleigh Falls on Labour Day weekend. “I didn’t think. I just ran down to the lake,” said a still-stunned Mr. Barnes. “Everything hap- pened so fast.” The teen, who was swimming with friends near his cottage when the incident took place last Sunday, managed to revive 21-year-old Bantharakanthan Ratnakuperan. He then per- formed CPR on Nishanthan Ra- jesparam until paramedics ar- rived but the 24-year-old was pronounced dead at Peterbor- ough Regional Health Centre an hour later. Recently taken off life-sup- port, Mr. Ratnakuperan is in in- tensive care at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. Mr. Barnes said he’s still try- ing to come to terms with not being able to help both men. “I’m alright,” he added. “But sometimes I think about it.” A nationally ranked swimmer, Mr. Barnes learned CPR last year as part of a national lifesav- ing course, but last weekend was the first time he’d ever been called upon to use his training. “Some guy just came out with a cell phone and asked if anyone knew CPR and I ran to the lake,” said the Grade 12 Dunbarton High School student. “Every- thing just came back to me.” Mr. Barnes, who competes out of the Scarborough Swim Club and hopes to qualify for the 2004 Olympics later this year, said he Pickering swimmer a hero PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG — Competitive swimmer Warren Barnes put his CPR skills to the test last weekend when he helped resus- citate a drowning man in Burleigh Falls. Setting up a podium at Herongate Barn Theatre, at the foot of the Duffin-Rouge Agricultural Preserve, the local MPP took her pokes at challenger Wayne Arthurs. By including the preserve in the City’s growth manage- ment study, the Pickering mayor has turned his back on a 1999 deal among the City, Durham Region and the Province to keep the lands agricultural in perpetuity, she said. “Wayne Arthurs and some developers have challenged my interest to protect the agricultural preserve,” Ms. Ecker said. “Sorry Wayne, sorry developers. The long- term vitality of our natural heritage is far more impor- tant than your short-term in- terests.” She also refuted advertise- ments taken out by the West Duffin Community Group Inc, claiming the MPP wants to pave over Seaton. “These newspaper ads are from people outside the com- munity telling us what’s best in our community,” Ms. Ecker said. “Not one shovel will go into the ground (in Seaton) until there is proper consul- tation.” Her promises were well re- ceived by local environmental groups in attendance. “Even if she’s in a minority government, I feel she’s going to be a strong voice,” said Lorne Almack, of the Green Door Alliance. “She’s protect- ed the environmental com- munity all along.” The City has disappointed the environmental community, he said, by seemingly turning its back on the agricultural easements placed on the preserve back in 1999. “I was a member of one of the groups that signed on to the agree- ment,” Mr. Almack said. “It was a wonderful achievement, we thought.” But, developers now stand to gain from public land that was sold at much lower agricultural prices to farmers, added Brian Buckles, also of the alliance. “That’s just unconscionable,” he said. Ms. Ecker also pledged to transfer 3,500 acres of Rouge Park lands to the Toronto Region Conservation Authority for further protection. MPP Janet Ecker held a press conference at Herongate Friday to dis- cuss the agricultural preserve. It was only reading in newspapers af- terwards that he discov- ered the second man had died. The Ontario Provincial Police said the victims were part of a larger group of eight men from Markham, who were fish- ing from the shore that day. At around 5:30 p.m., Mr. Ratnakuperan, 21, and Mr. Rajesparam, 24, both reportedly poor swim- mers, went for a dip but soon found themselves in distress in the three- metre deep waters about seven metres from shore. A third man from the group, 24-year-old Vija- yaram Santhananthan, jumped in to help, but OPP said, he too, was a poor swimmer. He was pulled to shore by an ex- tended fishing rod. The commotion attract- ed the attention of nearby scuba divers Nick Weath- erilt and Kim Vandie, both 20 and of Millbrook. While he managed to bring both men into shore, she located Mr. Barnes, who started per- forming CPR before emer- gency crews arrived. It’s their quick action that has prompted the OPP Peterborough de- tachment to recommend all three for a citation, said Senior Constable Brad Filman. “In this case, it’s a cita- tion for bravery and life- saving - lifesaving because he was able to revive one of the victims, and brav- ery because they dove into get them,” he added. Const. Filman said he has only recommended three citizens for citations in his long career as a po- lice officer. The detachment will put together a package with all the details of last weekend’s rescue and for- ward it to the OPP profes- sional standards branch for consideration. Should the nomination be successful, Mr. Barnes and the Millbrook couple should receive the honour at a ceremony later in the year, he said. Quick action saves a life ✦ Quick from page 1 Little Matthew scores free university tuition BByy LLeesslleeyy BBoovviiee Staff Writer AAJJAAXX — Matthew Patrick Molina has a pret- ty good start on life. He has two parents who love him and now, a piece of paper guaranteeing him one year of free tu- ition at Canada’s newest university. “This is a door he can step through at any time,” said Carolyn Byrne, dean of health sciences. “Maybe he might decide to go into something else but the offer is always here.” To commemorate the first day of classes Sept. 4, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) presented free one-year tuitions to the f irst babies born in the Lakeridge Health Corpo- ration and Rouge Valley Health systems, as well as the Northumberland Health Centre. Matthew was one of three babies in Durham Region and Northumber- land, who received a gift basket full of school para- phernalia and a certifi- cate declaring the tuition prize. Aidan Michael James Sauve, of Whitby, was the f irst baby born at the Lakeridge Health Corpo- ration, while Oliver Doig, of Cobourg, was first off the mark at Northumber- land Health Centre. Jennifer Samarelli, 21, of Pickering, and her 25- year-old partner Jason Molina welcomed the eight-pound, three-ounc- er into the world Thurs- day at 2:11 a.m. at Rouge Valley Health, Ajax and Pickering hospital. After 19 hours of hard labour, the couple were still a little overwhelmed Friday morning by the birth of their first son and the subsequent honour. “It was surprising. There was happiness and all those kinds of feel- ings,” said Ms. Samarelli. The first grandson for both families, Matthew’s delivery and his free tu- ition were actually an- nounced over the speak- ers at Willow Park Public School, where Ms. Samarelli’s dad is head custodian. Dr. Byrne said she hopes to keep in touch with Matthew’s progress over the years and hopes to still be a dean at UOIT when and if he comes knocking on the universi- ty ’s door. “We should stay in touch,” she said to Ms. Samarelli. “I can tell you what is happening at the university and you can tell me all about your beauti- ful son.” UOIT officials say a year of tuition is currently valued at about $4,200 but there’s no telling how much it will cost to attend years from now. Right now, UOIT offers programs in six different faculties - engineering, business, education, sci- ence, justice and health sciences. “But Matthew will have even more options in the future,” pointed out Dr. Byrne. “We hope he takes health sciences, natural- ly.” “I see him trying to race cars like his father,” added Ms. Samarelli. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, September 7, 2003 PAGE 5 P WestNilevirus: Fighting mosquitoes. I have not read of a single, specific fear that would warrant this. Are the advocates con- cerned that the impact of a light aircraft (or a heavy commercial plane, for that matter) would shatter the housings of the reactors, spewing radioactive mate- rial far and wide? There must be some- one with the competence to address this concern. The layman should not be left quaking in his boots because of un- informed talk by other laymen. Person- ally, I am much more fearful of a plane crash on places like: Cameco Corpora- tion in Port Hope (suppliers of enriched and depleted fuels for nuclear reactors); pesticide and chemical storage sites in Ajax; the water treatment plant where I might find myself downwind of a cloud of chlorine gas; the sewage treatment plant when I might be downwind of a cloud of fecal dust with the attendant aroma, complete with dangerous bacte- ria, viruses and parasites. I sincerely ask, what specifically are the reasons for the creation of a no-fly zone around nuclear power plants? Re- gional Councillor Mark Holland's pro- nouncement that "It is one of those things that seem inherently logical," does not satisfy me. If there is inherent‚ logic I would like the logic spelled out. CChhrriissttoopphheerr FF.. It's a thing of beauty when good people accomplish greatness. Thus is the case with Picker- ing's Perdita Felicien. As someone who has followed this elite athlete on her journey to the pinnacle of her sport, it was a sight to behold at the world cham- pionships last week -- seeing her fight for every inch of track at the end of the 100-metre hurdles final. Leaning over the finish line, she looked up in awe at the scoreboard to confirm what she already be- lieved: victory was hers. Within seconds of her breathtak- ing albeit unexpected gold-medal win, Perdita was loping with glee around the track, carrying a Cana- dian flag, looking every bit the champion she is. And, still later atop the medal podium, she was basking in the glory of having O Canada played in her honour from the loudspeakers at the cavernous stadium. For me, it was a treat to see Perdita fly under the radar, not having any pressure on her what- soever, because essentially no one was counting on her to win a medal, let alone gold. She was an unknown, an outsider there, and she was fine with that, quietly con- fident that her athletic abilities would speak for themselves. And, speak they did -- loudly. The 23 year old picked the most prestigious meet on the 2003 inter- national track and field calendar to be at her best. Her best proved to be more than adequate, running the final in a jaw-dropping 12.53 seconds. Her time didn't just beat the previous Canadian record of 12.61 seconds, it annihilated it. Make no mistake, her world championship victory was no fluke. Her star had been shining brightly for many years at the University of Illinois, winning back-to-back NCAA national hurdles in Califor- nia in June, rarefied air indeed for any collegiate track and field ath- lete of any era. And, much to the City of Picker- ing's credit, they plan to celebrate the accomplishments of one of our own. The City, I understand, is still searching for an appropriate date to hold a ceremony to honour Perdita, owing to the fact she's back at Illinois finishing her kinesi- ology studies there. When she comes home, there's no one more deserving of our ado- ration and gratitude for putting Pickering on the world map, at least where track and field is con- cerned. A treat to watch Perdita grasp greatness EEddiittoorriiaallss &&OOppiinniioonnss SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2003 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ JACQUIE McINNES, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Editorial Letters to the Editor AAll RRiivveetttt ss pp oo rr tt ss ee dd ii tt oo rr More research, rational thought required Extra steps needed beyond call for no-fly zones near nuclear plants Anwar Ur Rehman Mohammed may or may not have flown over the Pickering Generating Station over the past three years during pilot lessons with the Durham Flight Academy, according to contradicting sources. Either way, what has come to light from his recent detain- ment is it is not only possible but perfectly legal if the man now suspected of ties to an al-Qaida sleeper cell did tour the skies above the nuclear plant. In the wake of these revelations, one Pickering councillor is calling for no-fly zones over Durham's nuclear plants. "It's one of those things that seem inherently logical," said Coun. Holland. While it is reasonable to inquire about the need for no-fly zones, the councillor shouldn't jump to quick conclusions and neither should we. There are many questions that still need to be asked before no-fly zones are determined to be the cor- rect action for the desired outcome: to protect our nuclear plants from sabotage. Unfortunately, because it involves security, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), which regulates the plants, cannot fully reveal all measures it requires of Ontario Power Generation in regard to protecting Durham's plants against terrorist attacks. Given the robust nature of the plants, it is possible no-fly zones are deemed redundant given other fortification tactics in place. Or it may be that enforcing no-fly zones would be so onerous and cost-prohibitive that in light of other actions being taken, the end doesn't justify the means. Coun. Holland's directive deserves a further look. It doesn't hurt to review policy. But let's hope our air traffic, on which our economy depends, is not rerouted for the sake of public relation optics if it isn't the panacea required. And let's not forget the primary question. How did someone here on a student visa, now being held on suspicions of links to terrorist activity, get the opportunity to take flying lessons in Canada? According to Durham Flight Academy, this man went through a background check with authorities before he was permitted off the ground. There are a lot of buildings less fortified than our nuclear plants that could, if sabotaged, result in great devastation to the surrounding population. We need to ensure foolproof security begins at the runway, not in the air. Durham store hasn’t carried Aylmer meat in over 16 months BByy CCaarrllyy FFoosstteerr Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM — A local deli and fine foods store is frus- trated it remains on a list of retailers who may have received possibly tainted meat from a slaughter- house in Aylmer. “We don’t have any Aylmer meat here, but they’re (the government) in no hurry to get our name off their list,” said Richard Halenda, owner of Halen- da’s Fine Foods. “Maybe they don’t understand what the cost is to one’s reputation.” Halenda’s Whitby store is one of hundreds of retail- ers on a Canadian Food In- spection Agency Web site listing places that may be carrying meat from Aylmer Meat Packers Inc. While neither the Ministry of Natural Resources nor the Ontario Provincial Police will reveal why the abattoir has been under investiga- tion for two months, there are allegations of dead- stock killing at the factory. On Aug. 24 the Province issued a recall of all beef and beef products processed at the Aylmer plant, four days after sus- pending its licence. Halenda’s, which also has three stores in Oshawa - none of which is on the list - has not bought meat from Aylmer since June 2002. “We stopped buying (from Aylmer) because we didn’t have faith in them,” Mr. Halenda said. “Their quality was all over the board. “But now people are being punished for buying from a (provincially) en- dorsed house.” Mr. Halenda wants to know why his Whitby store remains on the list, despite a CFIA inspector visiting him on Saturday. “It raises a lot of ques- tions,” he said. “Does that mean the investigation goes back 16 months ago?” While it’s suggested that fresh meat only be frozen for up to six months, and frozen foods be kept for up to a year, people could still have products in their freezer, said Ron Ramde- holl, national manager in the office of food safety and recall at the CFIA. “I understand their con- cern,” he said of the stores. “It just takes some time to verify when the product was received, and any like- lihood people purchased it... we’re trying to move as quickly as possible to clear the stores.” Mo re than 10 have been removed, Mr. Ramdeholl added. It’s a difficult task to trace meat from Aylmer, he said. Not only was it sold directly from the slaugh- terhouse, but it also went through other processors who made it into things like sausage, pasta sauce, hamburger patties and wieners. Deb’s Farm Fresh Foods in Goodwood is also on the retailers list and remains there despite Durham health department offi- cials “clearing them,” last week. That came before the Region knew the CFIA had taken over inspections in the wake of the recall, said Ross MacEachern, manager of environmental health for Durham. Deb’s could not be reached for comment. As part of the meat re- call, the CFIA has also asked other products from Aylmer - including lamb and pork - not be con- sumed. Consumers should also remember none of the alle- gations against Aylmer have been proven, said Bruce O’Neill a spokesman for the Ministry of Public Safety and Security. That’s right, it’s the client who chose hypnosis, Marc Merlis, who is now exactly 8 lbs. away from his goal. Dateline put the major diet plans to the test with six members of the Class of 1978. Each participant wanted to lose weight before their 25th high school reunion. Like thousands of Positive Changes clients, Bakery Chef Mark Merlis found that hypnosis made all the difference. Dateline reports,“As for the hypno- tized baker, things couldn’t be bet- ter. By April he had lost almost five inches off his waist. And look who else caught the fever. His wife went to the hypnotist to quit smok- ing. And guess what? She says she no longer has the desire to smoke. Smoke free, fat free, the Merlis’s are flying…” More and more former dieters are turning to hypnotists and, like Marc, are discovering that it’s more effective than the leading weight loss shake, safer than a bacon cheeseburger protein diet, less painful than training for a marathon, and doesn’t involve counting points, calories, or a yo-yo diet. If you’re ready to take back control, and change the behaviours that caused you to gain weight in the first place, call your Ajax Positive Changes centre and book your FREE consultation NOW. The Pickering boy reportedly bid $8 million on a famous rock star’s guitar during the recent 24-hour buy- ing spree, Durham Regional Police said. “The victims were able to cancel some of the bids, but two sellers are requesting their money, several hun- dred dollars,” Sergeant Paul Malik said. “The man is now concerned about getting a bad rating on ebay,” he said. The officer was referring to the “pos- itive/negative” feedback buyers and sellers leave for one another on the popular Internet auction site. He said the boy changed the vic- tim’s ebay account password during a recent visit to his neighbour, who had auctioned some collectible cards for him in the past. No action has been taken against the child, said the officer. The 19-year-old had the op- portunity to show Jim Flaherty some of his T-shirts and hats at an early morning breakfast held at the Legion Hall in Ajax last week. Mr. Wilks was one of nine Durham students to take part. “It is pretty cool stuff,” said Mr. Flaherty of the Ajax teen’s clothing line. “I know my sons, who are 12, would love that ap- parel. It is very cool.” ‘FourOneSix Apparel’ is the name of Mr. Wilks’s clothing business, named after the To ronto area code. He was able to launch his business thanks to start-up money and business advice by a student program called ‘Sum- mer Company’ through the Business Advisory Centre of Durham. “It is going pretty good,” said Mr. Wilks of his business. “I have had lots of help from the BACD and the Summer Com- pany. They provide you with lots of help and mentors and it has been great. Having help makes it so much easier.” Mr. Wilks started his compa- ny because he found many of the stores he liked to shop in were getting too expensive. “I thought I would do my own thing and my friends liked it and it just got bigger as I went on,” he said. Beginning this month Mr. Wilks will be a student of the Guelph/Humber Co-op pro- gram for computer technology and telecommunications. He plans on putting his business on hold in order to pursue his studies, but plans to start it up again next summer. Mr. Wilks hopes to get his clothing into some big-name stores in the future and still keep the “prices low.” To check out some of Mr. Wilks’s clothes log on to www.416apparel.com. Students can present a busi- ness proposal to the Summer Company for examination and if accepted will receive at least $1,500 to get their business off the ground. Jim Flaherty hosted the breakfast for Durham’s 2003 Summer Company partici- pants in order to congratulate them on their efforts. For more information call the BACD at 1- 866-632-5151 or 905-665-6402. The BACD is at 1601 Hopkins St. in Whitby. Frustrated with the limited op- tions he was faced with, John Fyfe turned to Tai Chi and found it has changed his life forever. “It was either go under the knife, live with pills for the rest of my life or find an alternative,” said Mr. Fyfe. He had heard of a Tai Chi master who was giving free lessons down at the lake but Mr. Fyfe didn’t believe it was true. “I kept hearing these stories about this man’s lessons. I thought this man doesn’t know what he is doing. Who would do that? I went to meet him and I didn’t believe what I saw,” he said. According to Mr. Fyfe, it takes a lifetime of dedication and recogni- tion from others to become a master. Master Lai helps through Tai Chi ✦See Tai page 15 Tai Chi master Dr. Tak Ka Lai goes through a routine at the Connaught Park Club House in Oshawa. Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo “You cannot go around calling yourself a master. There are some that do and those people are not masters. In China an association must recognize you as a master but over here if you know what you are looking at you can recognize one. I have been in this game long enough to recognize a master,” he said. And that day at the lake he saw a master. “It is the mind, the attitude, com- posure, the way they move, the way they talk, the way they think, it is mostly an attitude,” said Mr. Fyfe de- scribing characteristics of a martial arts master. “It is not just the martial arts skill that makes a master, far from it. It is the whole package and they are few and far between,” he said. Mr. Fyfe, now much older, is a reg- ular student of Master Lai who is also a doctor. Dr. Tak Ka Lai immi- grated to Canada from Guangdong Province in China in the early 80s and began to set up his acupuncture clinic. He had desperately wanted to teach Tai Chi but didn’t know how to go about it so he started to practice down at the lake. Slowly, more and more people became interested in his lessons, which he offered for free. “I wanted to use my skills to help people,” said Dr. Lai. “I am from China and I love my motherland but I came here and this is my country so I love my country.” According to Mr. Fyfe, Tai Chi is a form of harnessing energy or moving meditation that benefits your health both psychologically and physically. “Some people take longer than others,” said Mr. Fyfe. “I was serious- ly into kung fu before I switched [to Tai Chi] and it took me forever to relax. But once it clicks it is amazing the difference.” Mr. Fyfe is adamant that Tai Chi taught by Dr. Lai has helped him re- cover from his injuries and rejuve- nate his spirit. “Believe me it worked. It is low im- pact, probably the best form of exer- cise that anybody could do without causing any undo stress on the joints,” he said. Tai Chi preaches love and togeth- erness even though it is a martial art. Whereas kung fu is an aggressive sport, Tai Chi is a defensive one and looks down upon fighting. Sterling Tobias is another one of Dr. Lai’s students and has helped or- ganize a variety of different Tai Chi classes for people to attend. Master Lai, now a senior himself, decided to start a program for senior citizens a few years ago. “We are well received by the se- niors because Dr. Lai teaches them two movements very slowly, gently and works with them and they are very dedicated,” said Mr. Tobias. “They probably have the best atten- dance of all the programs that we run.” Mr. Tobias said that seniors like to participate in the program because it gives them movement. “We just tell them to try. Just try. They like it so much they show up early, almost a half hour before class and wait for us to come and talk to Dr. Lai and ask him about their aches and pains,” said Mr. Tobias. “It is more than just Tai Chi, they devel- op a relationship with him.” On Monday nights beginning at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Lai teaches Yang style Tai Chi and Tai Chi sword. This pro- gram runs all year at Connaught Park Club House. Dr. Lai also teach- es a seniors program beginning in the fall. For more information about times and dates call Mr. Fyfe at 905- 434-1322 or Dr. Lai at his clinic phone 905-434-1322. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, September 7, 2003 PAGE 15 A/P Sunshine Express “All is lovely, all amiable, all is amenity and repose; the calm sunshine of the heart”: Constable The beaches and pleasant climate of Florida and Myrtle Beach are yours to enjoy on our incredibly affordable Sunshine Express holidays. (Lib- eral Leader) Dalton (McGuinty) can go to Van- couver and speak to the Liberal premier there, Gor- don Campbell, who has en- dorsed public auto insur- ance, who realizes it’s the best deal for drivers in British Columbia. And, (Premier) Ernie (Eves) can go to Vancouver, and the Liberal premier, who very often acts like a Conserva- tive, can tell Ernie as well, what a good deal public auto insurance is,” he said. The Ontario NDP is promising to institute a public auto insurance sys- tem, similar to those in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manito- ba, if it wins the provincial election set for Oct. 2. Mr. Hampton says rates in Ontario are up to 50 per cent more than in provinces with public auto insurance and he says a public system can immedi- ately save the average dri- ver $500 a year. A report released Thurs- day by conservative think- tank the Fraser Institute, says public auto insurance leads to more deaths, in- juries, and property dam- age because costs for bad drivers stay down. The study says under a public system Ontario could be faced with 50 more young driver deaths each year and 3,900 more personal injury collisions. But, Mr. Hampton says the assumptions in the study do not hold true. Critics have said the ex- pected $500 million cost of setting up public auto in- surance is too high. But, Mr Hampton says start up costs will be paid back by the system within three years. Tissue mineral analysis (TMA) is providing a definite blueprint for understanding symptoms that accompany nutritional imbalances, such as weight gain, pain, fatigue, irritable bowel, and ADHD, just to name a few. TMA is a laboratory - generated report derived from a lock of hair (a sample is taken from the nape of the neck). The report reveals a very concise breakdown of a person’s elemental chemistry, which includes Nutritional Elements, Toxic Elements (heavy metals), and also the Significant Ratios. Nutritional Elements serve as co-factors and coenzymes making reactions complete, and when imbalances occur, homeostasis (equilibrium of the internal systems of the body) is susceptible. When imbalances in any of these areas are exposed, specific recommendations are made providing a solution to correct troublesome symptoms at the root cause. For example, the thyroid gland may not function optimally without adequate iron, the pancreas may need a certain amount of calcium to release insulin, and high levels of tissue calcium may indicate that the body is not metabolizing calcium efficiently, as excess calcium shows up in the soft tissues (hair), rather than in the hard tissues (bone). Perhaps the body is too acidic from dietary intake, and calcium is being utilized to neutralize acid. Osteoporosis and many other diseases may be a result of nutritionally induced metabolic difficulties. The TMA lab report will indicate the status of calcium, as well as iron, chromium, and zinc and many other elements. How do we get mineral imbalances? Culprits of mineral imbalance are poor diet or acidic diet, medications, poor digestion (absorption), and stress. Karen Steward interprets TMA lab reports in Pickering, for more information call Karen Steward at (905) 837-6627. Karen Steward, R.N.C.P., C.N.P. Join the Walk that’s good for everyone’s heart. For seven consecutive years, the script was always the same, ending with no better than a third-place finish at the OBAs. Labour Day weekend 2003 changed the story dra- matically. The 13 best bantam 'AAA' teams assembled in Burling- ton for the season-ending championship. Pickering was informally ranked ninth of the teams after a season of injuries and mediocre tournament re- sults. North York had just re- turned from the Canadian 'AAA' Bantam Championship with the national gold medal. Mississauga North was ranked a close second in ability. The Sox played the final against Mississauga North, a squad that had whipped Pick- ering 13-2 in the opening game of the tournament. This time, Pickering surprised Missis- sauga North by scoring four runs in the top of the first in- ning against a suddenly ner- vous defence. The first Missis- sauga North batter responded with the only home run of the game in the bottom of the first and Mississauga North sent seven batters to the plate in the first inning but still trailed 4-2. The game settled down with excellent defensive plays by both teams and timely bunting and two-out hits by the Sox. A last inning scare with the pos- sible winning run at the plate for Mississauga North was averted and Pickering emerged 7-5 champions. The Sox advanced to the final after a 5-2 semifinalvicto- ry over Waterloo. The Picker- ing bantams received strong pitching and timely hits. Pickering drew Mississauga Nor th in the opener and ab- sorbed the worst drubbing in its eight years at the provincial championships, losing 13-2, their first loss in the double- knockout tournament. An early Saturday morning 4-0 win over Agincourt allowed the Red Sox time to check out early from the local hotel be- fore meeting powerhouse Nor th York in the afternoon. Nor th York opened up a 3-0 lead in the first inning but the Red Sox didn't allow another run while spreading out their own hits over the game's final six innings and emerging with an emotional 6-3 win. Burlington was no match for the Sox with both teams play- ing their fourth game of the tournament Saturday night. An 11-4 win moved the Red Sox into the semi-final against Wa- terloo Sunday afternoon. The guest of honour at the team’s celebratory dinner was Mike Leufkens who coached the team during its initial five years of development. Team members reside in Ajax and Pickering. They are: George Bozinovski, Tim Cozi- er, Brandon Crummey, Kevin DeMattos, Travis Livingstone, Anthony Lue, Jamie Molony, Kyle Neadles, Mark Phillips, Ryan Powell, Dwayne Proudlove and Brent Tamane. Jim Crummey coached the team, assisted by Trevor De- Mattos and Steve Wyzinski. All three Dolphins teams came away with hard-earned wins over the perennial Central Ontario Minor Football League contenders from Burlington at Kinsmen Park in Pickering Monday. The tykes started the ball rolling with a 12-0 victory; the atoms followed with 16-8 win and the peewees finished a perfect pigskin day with a 22-8 decision. The tykes scored all its points in the f irst half. Running back Denver Wright put the Dolphins on the scoreboard, scor- ing on a pitch from quarterback Jeff McIlravey to the right side of the field. Wright then ran the ball 70 yards into the end zone. Fullback Ashton Rochester scored the second major on a reverse to the right from Burlington's six-yard line. Rochester broke two tackles in the back- field before turning the corner and head- ing into the end zone. Defensive linemen Michael Roache and Jordan Ali rattled the Burlington offence continually up the middle and corners Richard Quintenton and Omar Smith shut down the Stampeders outside. Defensive player of the game was line- backer Alex Horodnyk and centre Jack- son Harding got the nod as the offensive player of the game. Meanwhile, the Dolphins' atoms im- proved its record to 3-0 with Monday's victory. Running back Myles Daly scored on a 10-yard scramble to tie the game at 8-8, with Kyle Goffe adding the two-point convert. Daly later scored a 90-yard touchdown and completed the scoring with a two-point convert. The offensive line of Ian Tobias, Brent Peters, Ryan Ko, Jamel Watson, Matt Blum, Josh Smith, David Hassell and Kyle DeBellotte did a solid job of opening holes for the running backs and protect- ing quarterback Tosh Miller Francis. On defence, linemen Peter Iyamu, Flo- rian Schlosser, Matt Blum, Brandon Mis- seri and Nick DeFreitas all provided a dominating performance. Safety Andre Shand also made countless tackles in the contest. Also providing solid efforts were David Wilson who played cornerback and re- ceiver, Alan Forsythe who made several punishing tackles, and Kyle Whelan, Jesse Kelly and Darnell Brown who were also key contributors. The peewees also pushed its league record to 3-0 with an exciting, hard-hit- ting victory over the Stampeders. Following an interception by defensive back Robert Spagnola, quarterback David Priestman hooked up with wide re- ceiver Cecil Cherrie for a 30-yard touch- down pass. Kicker Alexander Ko booted the convert. Tight end James McIntosh pulled in a 30-yard pass-and-run play from Priestman to give the Dolphins good field position. Running back Tris- tan Ming later scored on a three-yard dive to extend the Dolphins' lead. Before half time, the Stampeders struck with a touchdown to cut the Dolphins' lead in half. The peewees responded in the third quarter with a 35-yard touchdown score from Priestman to wide receiver Travis Thomas. At that point in the contest the Dolphin defence took over, shutting down the Stampeders. Inside linebackers Andrew Smith and Keith Hunter fought off blocks to make tackles and limit Burlington's progress. Defensive corner Sean Carter harassed the Stampeders' ball carriers and the quarterback throughout. Linemen Michael Vahabi and outside linebacker Philip Roy had exceptional games. On offence, the backfield duo of Ming and Quittenton combined with Jermayne Goodridge and Andrew Smith to provide a formidable ground game. Offensive linemen Shayne Pinnock, Jide Utomi, Scott Blake, Taylor Rice, Eric Degnan, Michael Vahabi and James McIntosh supplied solid work. Special teams play was led by Justice Mounsey and Alexander Ko. All three Dolphins teams play in Etobi- coke against the Eagles today (Sunday, Sept. 7). Here, Brandt Gordon, left, knocks away a pass intended for receiver Joe Dublin. Can't outfox the Sox Pickering minor bantams Eastern Ontario champs PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ——The Pickering Red Sox minor bantam rep baseball team capped an outstanding summer by winning the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association Championship in Peter- borough recently. The Sox entered the EOBA event as one of the favourites to take the EOBA crown, posting an impressive 17-1 league record, with a loss to Ajax being the only blemish. The team's near-perfect record, however, didn't guarantee success at the champi- onships, with the team having to go to a second and final game against the Ajax Spartans in order to nail down the title. With the Sox undefeated heading into the final, the Ajacians would have to beat Pickering twice in order to take the EOBA crown. Ajax won an exciting 14-11 decision in the first game, to set up a second and deciding contest with the title on the line. Pickering, however, would emerge victorious 23-15, despite tired pitching and weary batters on both teams. The Sox opened the double-knock- out event by posting big offensive numbers in back-to-back wins over Clarington and Keene. Pickering beat Clarington 24-5 and edged Keane 5-2. This set up a game against Sox ri- vals, the Whitby Wildcats, in what would be the game of the tournament. Due to weather delays, players and fans found themselves extremely worn out after an 8 a.m. opener and now playing their third game at 9 p.m. The long day for the Sox seemed to pay off in Whitby's favour early; they jumped into a seemingly insurmount- able 7-0 lead. A loss for Pickering would mean playing another early game Sunday morning. Perhaps the incentive for extra sleep jarred the Sox back to life, and they responded with six runs. Over the final four in- nings, the lead changed hands with Whitby ahead 9-8 in the ninth inning. The Red Sox bantams capped the late-night thriller with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to head home with a 10-9 victory, their third win of the day. Team members are Robert Car- man, Brandon Eleuterio, Travis Hendry, Mark Hoyne, Kyle Kotchie, Mike McFarlane, Daniel Pineau, Stan Pon, Eddy Ricciardi, Chris Rose and Ryan Turner. Mike Carman manages the team, assisted by Dave Hindley. The general manager is Colin McFar- lane.
