In cross-examination, Crown Attorney Paul Murray said he didn’t buy the defendant’s story that a third man known only as ‘Razor’ shot Teran Richards be- fore fleeing in a car with Mr. Maragh and Tyshan Riley. “There was no third person. That’s the truth,” Mr. Murray told the court. “I’m saying Razor didn’t exist.” Mr. Maragh, 23, has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, f light from police and numerous firearm charges in connection with the April 3, 2001 shooting at Pine Ridge High School. Mr. Richards, 22, and formerly of Ajax, survived four gun shots from a .357-caliber revolver dur- ing a dispute over a foul at an after-hours basketball game in the school gymnasium. Mr. Maragh testified Wednes- day Razor was in the back seat of the rented Pontiac Sunfire they sped off in before crashing in north Pickering during a po- lice pursuit. The defendant said he met Razor three or four years ago in the Galloway neighbourhood in Scarborough and eventually began selling drugs for him. But Mr. Maragh said he knew little else about his “business friend” other than he drove new rental cars, originally hailed from Ja- maica, and now lives in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue area. “In three and a half years you never discussed anything of a personal nature?” Mr. Murray asked. “Surely you didn’t have the same relationship with him as other friends when it involved fronting drugs for sale. There had to be some level of trust.” “We didn’t discuss anything personal,” said Mr. Maragh. “He Crown cuts up ‘Razor’ theory Celia Klemenz/ News Advertiser photo PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG - Peterborough police have charged two Picker- ing men with sexual assault after a woman was fondled last Friday. Durham Catholic District School Board trustees ap- proved it at the June 23 board meeting. Howev- er Mitch LePage, the board’s spe- cial-education su- perintendent, said the board is awaiting informa- tion from the Province so it can develop a five- year plan. He said a lot of informa- tion is still miss- ing and the process will con- tinue into the next school year. Mr. LePage said the Educa- tion Ministry is working on new standards for each exceptional- ity, outlining what services boards must provide. As well, revised ex- ceptionality defi- nitions are also in the works. “It makes it much more diffi- cult for school boards to know exactly what they’re going to have to do to meet the stan- dards and re- spond to the defi- nitions,” he said in an interview. As a result, staff has recom- mended major changes to the board plan not be made until the Province has completed its work. A draft autism spectrum disor- der standard is to be field-tested by the ministry in the next school year, and the Durham Catholic board had ap- plied but was not chosen to take part in it. Mr. LePage said the main dif- ference in this year’s plan is the extensive consul- tation process that occurred during the school year, involving focus group ses- sions and a sur- vey sent out to community mem- bers. Eighty-four per cent of survey respondents, ac- cording to the plan, rated the school team meeting process as good to excellent. Individual edu- cation plans for special-education students were also rated good to excellent by 78 per cent of respon- dents. However the plan states the lowest rate of satisfaction was with services for gifted students, with only 13 per cent giving a good to ex- cellent rating. The focus group par- ticipants stated a lack of adequate provincial finding for special edu- cation has resulted in not enough staff to support services, with exist- ing staff bearing a heavy workload. Student services and informa- tion technology staff are hoping to put the plan on the board’s Web site. Once we start asking for donations it won’t take long,” said the fund- raising campaign chairman. The Ajax Pickering Women’s Centre hopes to have the new Ajax shelter, Herizon House, ready for women and children in West Durham by next June. It’s imperative the remaining $500,000 in capital needed to finish the project rolls in before then. “We’d like to have it by the time we complete the building,” explained Ms. Olenroot. “It’s much harder to raise money for something after it’s been built.” Her last project was helping the Friends of the Ajax Public Library group raise $1 million for a new facility. They man- aged to complete that task in about four years. “It helped me to understand how to run a major campaign,” said Ms. Olenroot, who advises small business on marketing, sales and promotion. This effort will concentrate on “fun events” to get the com- munity involved, she said. Her committee is also looking for corporate donations and sup- port from local service clubs. The Ajax Kinsmen Club is the first to contribute to the capital campaign, she said, do- nating $5,000 at the centre’s an- nual general meeting June 25. The campaign’s first fund- raising gala, ‘An Enchanted Evening, Thanks for Giving’ is Saturday, Oct. 11 at Trafalgar Castle School. Tickets are $125 or $200 for a couple. The centre also plans to make ‘A Tasteful Event’ an annual affair after the wine tasting and fashion show was such a hit in May, said Ms. Olenroot. DDUURRHHAAMM — Durham’s Catholic school board in- troduced two new superin- tendents at its June 24 board meeting, the last be- fore the summer break. The appointments of the rookie supervisory officers (SO) take effect Aug. 12. Mary-Catherine Kelly is a former teacher, vice-princi- pal and principal in the To r onto, Welland and Pe- terborough Victoria Nor thumberland and Clar- ington Catholic school boards. She will become the new secondary schools su- perintendent, also respon- sible for south Whitby ele- mentary schools. John Malloy’s experience has been with the Toronto Catholic board, where he was a teacher, chaplain, vice-principal and princi- pal. At the Durham Catholic District School Board, he will be responsi- ble for the Pickering and Ajax family of elementary schools and staff develop- ment. Early this year, the board rehired retired superinten- dent John Vesters on a con- tract basis until the end of this month. Board chair- man Mary Ann Martin at the time noted the board was short one supervisory officer and despite a search was unable to find a suit- able replacement. Education director Patri- cia Manson said in an inter- view the board took advan- tage of funding it received from the Province for the at-risk student program de- buting this fall. She said the funding was for either a principal or an SO to report directly to the education di- rector. Ms. Manson said Mr. Vesters’s contract will not be renewed and that super- intendent portfolios will be shuffled with the addition of the two new staffers. Paul Pulla, the current Catholic board introduces super new additions secondary schools superintendent, will take over the at-risk portfolio and remain in charge of continuing and adult education. Mitch LePage will remain the board’s special-education superin- tendent, also responsible for north Whitby and north Durham elemen- tary schools. David Visser and Chris Hurst will remain the SOs in charge of business and human resources, respectively. Gerry Blake remains superintendent of elementary school programs and Oshawa elementary schools. just gave me drugs and that’s it.” The Crown also pointed out Mr. Maragh and Mr. Riley left a number of personal belongings around the crash scene but Razor didn’t leave behind any items other than the .357 revolver Mr. Maragh alleges be- longed to him. It was found about 106 feet northeast of the car, said Mr. Murray. Earlier in the day, Mr. Maragh tes- tified in his defence, he lied to fellow inmates at Whitby jail soon after his arrest, telling them he did the shoot- ing because he was afraid of being muscled by larger prisoners. “They had seen it on TV. They had seen it in the papers. I knew people would leave me alone,” he told de- fence attorney David Bayliss. “I’m small so I used it to my advantage.” The defendant said he also lied in a taped conversation to an under- cover police officer posing as a gang member in his cell at an Oshawa courthouse because he wanted to impress an inmate he thought was also in jail for a shooting. “I didn’t want there to be any problems with him...I was just say- ing a lot of stuff,” Mr. Maragh said. Asked why he didn’t tell them a third person was involved in the shooting, Mr. Maragh said he didn’t want to “rat on Razor.” “If I do that, I’d be in trouble in jail. You don’t rat on people,” he said. In his cross-examination, Mr. Murray pointed out the defendant didn’t feel the need to tell inmates he was the trigger man at the three other Provincial holding centres he’s been held in since his arrest. Mr. Maragh said he told about 15 people at Whitby jail but soon stopped upon the advice of his lawyers. He told the court he had no idea fellow inmates would go to the po- lice with the information. But the Crown argued Mr. Maragh must have known prisoners talk to the au- thorities or he wouldn’t have kept quiet about Razor’s involvement. “Given the few details you have (about Razor), how is it ratting him?” asked Mr. Murray. “J ust mentioning his name is rat- ting him out,” answered Mr. Maragh. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, July 4, 2003 PAGE 5 P New Store Hours: Mon. - Wed. 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Thurs. & Fri. 10 a.m. - 9 p.m., Sat 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. 900 Champlain Ave., Oshaw a 1-800-642-4561 or (905) 723-5211 on sale now What’s your new look of comfort? 50 SECOND TIME AROUND THRIFT STORE Kingston Rd.Hwy. 2 Hwy. 401Sheppard Ave . 91 Rylander Blvd. Village of Abbey Lane VILLAGE OF ABBEY LANE (PORT UNION & 401) 416-283-1882 Your support of this store benefits children with chronic and serious illnesses and their families. % OFF •SHORTS • TEES AND MORE •MENS •LADIES •KIDS ALL CLOTHING FOR SUMMER 2 DAYS ONLY FRIDAY JULY 4TH SATURDAY JULY 5TH Razor blamed by accused ✦ Razor from page 1 injured. Womens’ shelter needs us all $500,000 capital campaign will build new home and new hope for clients Staggering, surprising and sobering -- how else to describe the opening of the long-awaited new women's shelter in west Durham? Herizon House offered refuge to its first abused women and chil- dren May 6, and one day later housed 17 . Today, the home is full, with 12 children and nine women currently rebuilding their lives with the help of staff and support services. Consider that in a snapshot survey on April 15, 2002, it was found 3,287 women and 2,999 children were living in shelters across Cana- da. And these are just the women lucky enough to have escaped emotionally, physically and sexually abusive situations. Abuse of women and children offers no discrimination against economic class, race or religion. Stats show it could be a family member, friend, neighbour or the person who greets you each day at the store. The need for a shelter in west Durham can be traced back at least 10 years with the formation of the Ajax Pickering Women's Centre Inc. But the need really came into the spotlight three years ago following the shooting death of Gillian Hadley in her Pickering home by her husband Ralph, who then turned the gun on himself. While sadly not the only murder of Ajax and Pickering women by a spouse in the last few years, the tragic Hadley tale and subsequent coroner's inquiry certainly seemed to be the catalyst for the final push in making the west Durham shelter a reality. Yet despite welcoming its first clients two months ago, plenty of work remains for Herizon House. The current shelter is only tem- porary, as extensive renovation work and additions continue at the shelter's permanent location in Ajax. That work carries with it a $500,000 price tag, the basis for which a new capital campaign was recently launched. The shelter will be appealing to the broader community through a number of fund-raising avenues for support in reaching its goal in time for next year's opening of the permanent home. In its short history so far, Herizon House has already helped women in our communities get back on their feet and begin lives anew. With continued support the prospects for a truly incredible legacy are endless. We encourage all residents, community groups and businesses to step up and support the shelter in any way they can. Every member of the community has a role to play in ensuring the long-needed ray of hope for local women and children. So yes, staggering, surprising and sobering -- but here in Ajax and Pickering, comforting as well. Too many chiefs TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: Recently in two of our current councillors’ publicity, which of course is geared towards the November elections, I have noticed that they both refer to themselves as "deputy mayor". Presum- ably this is a meaningless position which basically infers that these two gents are available to step in should the mayor be- come indisposed, unable to chair a meet- ing because of a conflict of interest, or maybe these guys have a spare pair of scissors each for ribbon cutting. I really do not think that anyone should be swayed in their voting intentions because certain people like to give themselves ti- tles that do not really exist. They were not elected by us. These positions, hope- fully carry no financial rewards, after all any one of our current council could and should be able to chair a meeting at any time. In fact it would be far better if either the mayor, as a privilege, appointed his own deputy or better still it should be done on a rotational basis involving all councillors. If the United States and in- deed Canada can operate a national gov- ernment with one vice-president and one deputy prime minister respectively then why on earth does Ajax need two deputy mayors? Would it also not make a re- freshing change when people are running for public office that instead of blowing their own trumpets, they explain things that the people care about such as why they would not want to be accountable to the electorate by signing a simple code of ethics, and give their reasons for not doing so ? Don't forget to ask them folks come door-knocking time. Remember it's our tax dollars that pay these people. A/P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, July 4, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Ihave often wondered if GO train officers are wannabe police offi- cers. I do not envy their job, but I also do not support the way they treat commuters. I have been a com- muter for several years and I have only met one officer who consistent- ly treats all commuters with dignity and respect. Even if she is giving a ticket to someone, commuters do not feel stripped of their pride be- cause of her polite and respectful manner. I am sure many of us have received a ticket or warning at some point. Maybe we changed our coats or purses and forgot our monthly paid ticket only to find out when asked for it, we did not actually have it. To err is human. After riding the train for so long, you get to know the officers and, yes "we" the commuters, have nick- names for them. One we call Rambo and are hoping that for the next movie sequel they will choose this GO officer instead of Sylvester Stal- lone. We have another officer and de- spite her John Wayne stature her beautiful blue eyes are the door to her soul, the only sign of tenderness. When commuters are sleeping I imagine the officers have been trained not to touch the person with- out their consent as it may be con- sidered assault. So what do they do when the commuter is asleep? One option, yell at the commuter in their sergeant major voices, making all commuters want to wet their pants. Or, yank their ticket out of their hand, waking the commuter up and invoking cardiac arrest. But, they have not touched the commuter! Not too long ago my ticket double- stamped over a previous ride. Oops, I thought, I better do it again as I re- membered an individual received a ticket for the exact same thing. So I stamped again. Of course the GO of- ficer arrived to check tickets. He started lecturing me about what I had done. When I tried to explain why I had done it, he put his finger up to shush me, finished talking and walked off. Had I been a good femi- nist I would have bitten off his index finger - unfortunately, the Mike Tyson in me did not emerge. But I felt a violation of my dignity. It made me think that perhaps these officers should be attending our Oshawa UOIT for a course in the Justice Wing on respecting others. As commuters we continue to tol- erate the lack of respect and why - because we all have to work and pay the bills. We do have one thing to be thankful for, they do not carry guns. The Region is currently reviewing the Plan. As part of the review, four Discussion Papers have been prepared that propose directions to protect the environment and rural resources, and to satisfy urban land needs and demand for commercial opportunities. The proposed directions are intended to stimulate discussion that will lead to the consideration of a final set of directions by the Region in early 2004. The proposed directions presented in the Discussion Papers do not necessarily represent the position of the Regional Council on changes that may be considered to the Regional Official Plan. Regional Chairman Roger Anderson called it “the last chapter of a book. “The debate is over and con- struction is beginning,” he told the crowd of around 50 gath- ered at the existing region headquarters at Rossland Road and Garden Street Wednesday morning. “This is a big step for the Region of Durham...(it will) be a place most residents will be proud of.” The groundbreaking follows 12 years of debate over a cen- tralized head office, which will join around 1,000 regional ad- ministration employees now working at nine separate build- ings - eight of them leased. The Durham Regional Police’s head office will also relocated to the new building. A recent report said the new regional head- quarters could save $34 million to $57 million over the next 35 to 40 years. “It was built on numbers, numbers that have withstood all the questions that have been asked,” said Whitby Mayor Marcel Brunelle, adding he’s happy the headquarters is remaining in his town. “When this building arises, a new day will begin.” Mr. Anderson has also at- tached some guarantees to the 334,155-square foot building: it will not exceed a cost of $67.7 million, and will not increase regional property taxes, nor negatively affect any planned regional capital programs for water, sewer, roads or general levy purposes. And he said, “without hesita- tion,” that a ribbon-cutting will take place in September of 2005. The Region is hoping to bring some elements of the old building into the new, including crests, the book of remem- brance and articles from coun- cil chambers, said Gary Cubitt, the chief administrative officer for the Region. BByy CCaarrllyy FFoosstteerr Staff Writer DDUU RR HH AA MM - The Re- g ion can knock $150,000 off the Regional head- quarters bill after Whit- by Mayor Marcel Brunelle promised to ab- sorb half the building permit cost. Mayor Brunelle made the comment at the ground-breaking cere- mony for the new head- quarters Wednesday morning. The 334,155- square foot new facility will be built in front of the existing office at Rossland Road and Gar- den Street in Whitby. Mayor Brunelle had just finished delivering a speech to the crowd of 50, when Regional Chair- man Roger Anderson j okingly asked if the mayor was done. Mayor Brunelle took the micro- phone back and made the announcement. “It was a great gesture by the Town of Whitby,” Chairman Anderson said of halving the cost of the estimated $300,000 per- mit. “I look forward to receiving the cheque.” Mr. Anderson said the permit cost is just money going from one taxpay- er’s pocket to another. Whitby council has not passed an official mo- tion, but Mayor Brunelle spoke to the members on Wednesday and received verbal approval. “It’s one of those things where I had dis- cussed it with members of council and seemed to have an agreement,” he said. Sgt. Keating cycled across the United States for 90 days last year and participated in more than 200 speaking engagements and events, raising money all in the name of autism, from which his eight-year- old son Kurtis suffers. “It was an incredible experience,” said Sgt. Keating, of Courtice. The police officer said he experienced many emotional moments while biking. On Father’s Day last year Sgt. Keating was to stop in Texas for a speaking engagement and was told his wife and two children wished him a great day but could not be with him. Unbeknownst to Sgt. Keating, a man named Jack Wagner, who had no connection with autism but was touched by Sgt. Keating’s story, paid for his wife and children to fly down for a three-night, all-expens- es-paid visit. There was not a dry eye in sight as the sergeant’s wife and two children ran out of a white van to surprise him. “As far as I am concerned,” said Mr. Wagner to Sgt. Keating, “no father should be without his kids on Father’s Day.” Another time, an eight-year-old boy handed over his “life savings” to the sergeant so that he would help his five-year-old sister, who also suffers from autism. The boy’s life savings consisted of a handful of nickels, quarters and dimes, which he carried in a plastic bag to hand to the cyclist. The long-time veteran of the po- lice force said his travels have brought him joy knowing there are good people in the world. “A fter close to 20 years as a police officer seeing bad things and peo- ple, it is refreshing to meet thou- sands of good people wanting to help. “I have to do it,” said Sgt. Keat- ing of his bike trip across Canada. “My life is autism. I want to know that I did all I could and not regret that I could have done more.” Sgt. Keating said that he is not a cyclist and so some parts were dif- ficult for him. “There were times when I was so tired and didn’t want to do it any- more. I said I can’t quit and I would look down at laminated pictures of my kids on my handlebars and keep going. The thing I learned was that children can be such a moti- vating factor.” Sgt. Keating raised more than $1.3 million last year and hopes to raise $1 million this year. He hopes people become more aware of the effects of autism. “People won’t give to a cause if they don’t understand it,” said Sgt. Keating. “People have to under- stand that autism is devastating.” He pointed out children who have autism do not have any distin- guishing characteristics and peo- ple often dismiss its severity. According to the Autism Society of Ontario, autism typically ap- pears during the first three years of life, and is the result of a neurolog- ical disorder that affects the func- tioning of the brain. It impacts the development of the brain in areas of social interaction and communi- cation skills. “I want children with autism to lead the best quality of life,” said Sgt. Keating, who stated that the best way to do that is to increase funding for research. Sgt. Keating said he is blessed with the desire and ability to ride across the country but says this is the last year for cycling for autism. “I am not going next year because I don’t want to leave the kids for any length of time.” Sgt. Keating has told his son Kur tis what he is doing and phones him every day when he is away but said it is difficult for Kurtis to ex- press himself. Luc Vandermeern, who will be riding alongside Sgt. Keating while they cross the country, also has a child with autism, his 10-year-old daughter Sarah. Sgt. Keating and Mr. Vander- meern begin their travels in Van- couver on July 5 and will finish Aug. 23 in Halifax, N.S. The pair, along with their sup- port team, will be arriving in Os- hawa on Aug. 9. People will be able to raise pledges and join the two as they cycle from the Civic Auditori- um to Lakeview Park on Aug. 9. Sgt. Keating said the support he has received from friends and col- leagues of the police association has been overwhelming, especially the support he has received from Bob Boychyn, chairman of the po- lice services board and Durham Region Police Chief Kevin McAlpine. For more information on the cy- clists and their journey or for infor- mation on autism visit www.cycle- forautism.com. Autism bike ride a journey of love for police officer Durham Regional Police Sergeant John Keating, with his son Kurtis who has autism and his daughter, Krystal. He is getting back on the bike to cycle across Canada to raise awareness about autism. Last year he cycled across the United States over a 90-day period and participated in more than 200 speaking engagements. PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG — Spend a week in Ireland this summer. Well, sort of. Foundation plantings are the evergreens used around the outside perimeter to soften the straight lines of the house, driveway and walkways or to hide unsightly concrete blocks. In new subdivisions the planting of foundation and specimen evergreens helps to soften the starkness of house after house and gives the homeowner the benefit of a welcoming entrance. Evergreens can be upright or spreading, and a combination of both provides a straight forward design for the front yard. “Designer” evergreens such as spirals, multiple round tiers or pom- poms are popular due to the predictable growth habits; and with a minimum of two trimmings per year can look neat and tidy year round. Upright evergreens such as Emerald Cedar, ‘Mountbatten’ Juniper or ‘Spartan’ Juniper can be planted at the perimeter of the house to soften the strong lines of a two or three storey house and frame the entranceway. As well, the above are all excellent choices for a hedge for screening or privacy. For a rich dark evergreen, the vast array of yews (Taxus) are an ideal choice due to their colour, pr edictable growth habits and adaptability to various amounts of sunlight. 7,500 SQ. FT. They require full sun and should be protected over the winter by burlaping or applying an anti-dessicant product. Spreading evergreens for foundation plantings include the following: ‘Blue Star’ Juniper in a sparkle like fine needle; the greens would include ‘Calgary Carpet’ Juniper or ‘Dwarf Japanese Garden’ Juniper which remain low as they grow or the yellows of ‘Gold Coast’ or ‘Rheingold’ Juniper. Here are some recommendations to consider when planting your evergreens: 1) Amend the existing soil with the addition of triple-mix soil and use triple-mix soil in the planting hole. 2) Fertilize regularly with a transplant fertilizer to promote a strong healthy root system. 3) Add bonemeal to the planting hole as well for better results in root development. 4) Regular watering is critical as the temperature and humidity soars - a soaker hose is ideal for use when a new area is planted with evergreens. 5) Consistent watering right up until the ground freezes also ensures the evergreen going through the winter without the added stress of being dry. For formal or informal plantings in your home landscape, evergreens are an excellent choice. Until next week’s column... ‘Sit Back and Vision Your Garden.’ = Beautiful Job!!! The 35th annual Os- hawa Art Association ju- ried exhibition opened Thursday night at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa. The open exhibition will run through to July 13. The association received more than 133 entries from artists. Juror Ray Cattell chose 63 for the annual show and selected winners in a variety of categories. That's about average, said show chairman Catherine Delhaise. "It's an open juried show," she explained. "It's open to artists in Durham Region and all members of the OAA." The gallery's Garfield Fe rg uson, who has hung the show for years, has in- dicated it's one of the best the OAA has presented, she said. Delhaise won best pastel in the show which put her "on top of the world," she said. OA A president Sharon Steinhaus has been con- centrating on art for the last eight years and enjoys working in all media. "There's just too much yummy stuff out there" to restrict herself to one or two, she said. "Don't spe- cialize, there's too much good stuff out there." "Every new painting has to be a new experience," Delhaise said. "It doesn't always work." They are inviting every- one to attend the gallery for the show, in order to see the work being pro- duced across Durham. The show's juror, Cattell, was born in England and studied and produced art there until he came to To ronto in 1954. He's a life member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Wa- tercolour. His works are in private collections around the world, including the Prince of Wales and the Vatican Library. This show is one of two put on by OAA. The sec- ond is the fall art festival, with works by OAA mem- bers only. This year, the festival will be held Oct. 2 to 5 at Jubilee Pavilion, Lakeview Park, Oshawa. OAA has 172 members and has been active since 19 67. Its objectives are to encourage the develop- ment of artistic talent in the region. Annual mem- bership is $25 which covers the cost of a monthly newsletter and programs for monthly meetings. Meetings are held the sec- ond Wednesday of every month. Anyone interested in joining is asked to send name, address and a cheque to the Oshawa Art Association, Oshawa Cen- tre Post Office, Box 30637, Oshawa, ON L1J 8L8. Clocks!! Community Care setting up new home Almost 900 have confirmed for first-year university BByy MMiikkee RRuuttaa Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM — Canada’s new university has so far accepted close to 900 stu- dents for fall studies. The Council of Ontario Universities recently re- ported that 71,913 Ontario high school students have told the Ontario Universi- ties’ Application Centre (OUAC) that they would be accepting university offers and begin studies in Sep- tember. The figure repre- sents about 70 per cent of students who applied to university in this double co- hort year, when Grade 12 students graduated with their OAC counterparts. Jamie Mackay, the OUAC’s executive director, in a press release stated that by November, when universities report their en- rolment numbers to the Province, the figure would likely stand at roughly 70,000. He added that 46 per cent of students who accepted offers received their first program choice, down from 49 per cent last year. The OUAC reported 513 secondary school students have so far signed up to at- tend the University of On- tario Institute of Technolo- gy (UOIT) in Oshawa. But Richard Levin, UOIT’s vice-president of enrolment management, on Thursday said the total number of confirmed acceptances is 877 pupils. “We were targeting just about 700 so we’re really pleased with that,” he said. “We do have the capacity to handle a few more, so we’ll be continuing to encourage applications through the summer for certain pro- grams.” Mr. Levin said the uni- versity could accept 1,000 first-year students. Pro- gram openings still exist for honours degrees in inte- grated justice studies, com- merce, manufacturing en- gineering, nuclear engi- neering, biological sciences, physical sciences and radi- ation physics. He expected the number of confirmed students to slowly change through the summer months. Roughly 4,700 students applied to UOIT and about 900 made it their first uni- versity choice, however many chose to go else- where or were not accept- ed. Two-hundred-and-fif- teen students are con- firmed for the university’s commerce program, mak- ing it the most popular. En- rolment in the other pro- grams is as follows: nursing (collaboration with Durham College) — 153; justice studies — 117; man- ufacturing engineering - 11 5; science — 103; nuclear engineering - 92, and edu- cation — 82. Students appear to be flocking to Durham Col- lege: Mr. Levin says enrol- ment compared to last year is so far up about 18 per cent, more than at any other Ontario college. The average enrolment increase at Ontario col- leges for September is around five per cent, he said. Wednesday was the payment deadline for col- lege courses so Mr. Levin says it’s hard to pin down an exact number of stu- dents at this point since “confirmation numbers are very volatile.” Mr. Levin said excite- ment is building amongst UOIT staff with two months to go before the university opens. “People are thrilled and excited about welcoming the first class and we’re confident we’re going to de- liver a great program,” he said. After putting together what can only be termed a year of excellence on the ice, scoring more than 200 goals as a member of her high school team, Team Ontario at the 2003 Cana- da Winter Games, and with her club team, the Durham West Lightning juniors, Pickering’s Ashley Riggs is looking ahead to her hockey future. And, that future lies with the St. Cloud State Huskies of St. Cloud, Min- nesota. The diminutive 5-foot-3 centre known for a deft scoring touch accepted the athletic scholarship offer of the Huskies after mulling over several oth- ers from NCAA Division 1 schools, including Bemidji State University, the Uni- versity of Wisconsin, and Northeastern University in Boston. She was, however, im- pressed with the campus and the facilities at St. Cloud, especially the hockey facility she expects to adopt as her second home. “The arena was huge; it was an amazing arena,” said Riggs, 18, a St. Mary Catholic Secondary School graduate. “That’s what caught my eye.” She was also sold on the hockey program, which offers an up-and-coming team in the ultra-compet- itive Western Collegiate Hockey Association, al- though St. Cloud suffered through a tough 2002-03 campaign with an 11-23 overall record. As one of four freshmen forwards on the Huskies’ roster for 2003-04, she’ll be counted on to show her scoring acumen on a daily basis. “It is a very competitive conference, which will be good for me. But, I think it’s going to be a lot of fun,” she said. Her coach at St. Mary, Dino Caggiula, said the sky’s the limit for Riggs in the university ranks. “She’s an incredible player,” he said. “Probably, she’ll step right into the first or second line. She’ll definitely get some power- play time and do real well. I’ve talked to a number of university scouts and every one of them wanted her. Her potential is unbe- lievable.” Her scholarship to St. Cloud caps off what can only be described as a dream season. To wit: • After two consecutive provincial silver medals in high school senior girls’ hockey, Riggs helped lead St. Mary to the gold medal at the 2003 Ontario Feder- ation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships; • A gold medal with the Team Ontario women’s hockey team at the Cana- da Winter Games in New Brunswick; and • Besides the 200 goals, she added more than 50 assists combined with the three clubs. But, that’s not the end of the accolades. She also saw her number 91 St. Mary sweater lifted to the rafters at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Her St. Mary teammates be- stowed her with the hon- our as a way of signifying the first Ontario Federa- tion of School Athletic As- sociations (OFSAA) gold medal by St. Mary in the first OFSAA girls’ hockey championship. Riggs noted she was “surprised” to learn of her sweater making a stop in the hall. In preparation for her freshman season, she’s going full tilt this summer with her training regimen. That includes being on the ice three times a week with a local bantam ‘AAA’ squad at Art Thompson Arena in Pickering. In ad- dition, she also plans to do off-ice conditioning. She noted hard work should make her ready to play a big role with the Huskies. “As long as I train in the summer I should be fine when I get there,” she said. Although playing uni- versity hockey is in her im- mediate future, her ulti- mate goal is to play on the Canadian national women’s team and repre- sent the country at an up- coming Olympic Winter Games, possibly in 2006. “I’m hoping I get that chance,” she said. Floating on a cloud RON PIETRONIRO/ News Advertiser photo Ashley Riggs is off to Minnesota after she accepted a hockey scholarship at St. Cloud State. Although she had a choice of universities, Riggs chose to join the Huskies because of the strength of the hockey program. Spartans explode for ball title AAJJAAXX — After dropping its first game of the Burlington tournament, the Ajax Spartans Sherry Brining - Sutton Group major rookie baseball team reeled off four consecutive victories to take the consolation championship. The tournament included 16 major rookie teams from across southern On- tario in a three-day elimination format. The Spartans bats were lively early in the final as they turned a 4-0 first-in- ning lead into a 14-5 romp over the Mis- sissauga Twins to claim the champi- onship. The Spartans crushed the Barrie Red Sox 18-5 in the semifinal. Ajax ex- ploded in the first inning, scoring six runs. All told, Ajax unleashed a 36-hit at- tack. The Brampton Royals defeated the Spartans 7-2 in the tournament opener. The Ajax rookies regrouped in a major way in Game 2 against St. Catharines, posting a 13-8 victory. In Game 3, the Spartans blanked Oakville 14-0. Team members Brandon Carter, Matthew Coppens, Ryan Delaney, Tim Ernst, Joshua Fagan, Shayne Owen- Flood, Kaza Keane-Kajami, Jesse McDon- ald, Ryan Pim, Dylan Rivers, Matthew Scobie and CJ Stephens all put up excel- lent offensive numbers. Ajax dominated Spartacus 5-2 in the semifinal game, while in the quarter-fi- nals, the Strikers edged York United Rapids 3-2. The Strikers began their journey to- ward a championship with a 3-2 victory over North York Cosmos in the tourna- ment opener. Next, the Ajacians had little trouble in silencing the Barrie Spirits 7-0. In Game 3, Ajax pulled a similar 7-0 romp, this time over Glen Shields Sun- devils ‘A’. The Ajacians dominated the first half of the game but Guelph’s de- fence proved impenetra- ble as the first half ended in a scoreless draw. The second half was more hotly contested, as both teams had chances to score. But with just two minutes left, the Royals scored the game’s only goal, sealing the title. The Jaguars are Brian- na Fine, Sammy Jones, Kimberly Mayer, Jorden Maharaj, Natalie Crayper, Katrina Dinatale, Paige Luet, Layne Meingast, Kerrie Dipoce, Charlotte Ince, Gabriela Fofic, Leanna Bower, Tiffany Allen, Ashley Gillett and Tanille Jordan. Ford Luet and Joanne Jordan coach the team, Lori Jones is the manager and Brenda Meingast is the trainer.
