Sharda Badri, who's worked for a New Jersey state senator the past 16 years, said she met the Pickering man on an Inter- net chat room in 1999. Ms. Badri, a well-dressed woman in her 40s, said the rela- tionship started out platonic but turned intimate in March 2000, when she had sex with Mr. Raghunauth during their first face-to-face encounter at a New York hotel. "I didn't know he was mar- ried," she told a 12-member jury Thursday. Mr. Raghunauth led her to believe they would get married, added Ms. Badri, who flew in to testify for the defence at the trial of Mr. Raghunauth. The 32-year-old father of one has pleaded not guilty to first- degree murder and is accused of poisoning his pregnant wife with cyanide. Prosecutors say he fed He- moutie (Geeta) Raghunauth lunch laced with sedatives then forced cyanide down her throat Mother's Day May 14, 2000. Region enters negotiations for $20-million diversion facility BByy JJaaccqquuiiee MMccIInnnneess Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM ----Durham could see its waste diversion rate soar to 60 per cent if a new $20-million waste processing plant is built in Pickering, says a spokesman for Miller Waste Systems. The company has all the per- mits in place to build a facility at its Squires Beach Road location that would process organic waste including kitchen scraps, leaf and yard waste into compost. The property is currently used as a garbage transfer site and recy- clable material sorting facility. Wednesday, at a joint regional works and finance meeting, councillors asked to have the Re- gion investigate a deal with the company to allow construction of the facility to go ahead. The Miller proposal would require a 20-year commitment from the Region to use the facility to process organic waste from all eight municipalities. The Region already collects or- ganic kitchen waste separate from other garbage for compost- ing in the municipalities of Clar- ington, Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock. Those municipalities turned over their garbage collec- tion to the Region earlier this year. Their organics are taken to a Richmond Hill area facility owned by Miller. However, that facility is at capacity and there are no other provincially ap- proved locations in the GTA for organic food processing with available space. If the other four municipalities implement the or- ganic collection program, new space must be created. "This is a critical piece to the integrated waste management ✦See Facility page 5 ✦See Crown page 2 The 28-year-old expectant mother was found dead in the couple's Beat- on Way home. The defence maintains she com- mitted suicide after discovering evi- dence of her husband's infidelity. Court heard Ms. Badri was one of at least three women Mr. Raghu- nauth, had sex with and promised marriage to in the months prior to his wife's death. She said she found out Mr. Raghunauth had a wife on May 15, the day after Mrs. Raghunauth's death, and was surprised. When confronted, Mr. Raghu- nauth lied telling her it was a "mar- riage of convenience" and that he and Mrs. Raghunauth had not even lived together. Ms. Badri agreed with prosecutor Frank Giordano she was "fooled" by Mr. Raghunauth. "Do you feel silly about it all?" Mr. Giordano asked. "Oh, do I ever," Ms. Badri said. The jury in the Superior Court trial heard the last evidence Thurs- day after four months of testimony from 50 Crown and 15 defence wit- nesses, including Mr. Raghunauth. Mo re than 340 exhibits have been entered into evidence. The Crown has portrayed Mr. Raghunauth as a liar, a thief, a forg- er, and an adulterer who murdered his wife for freedom from debt and family obligations. Court heard he made inquiries about obtaining cyanide, claiming he had "a skunk problem," was se- cretly engaged to his New York mis- tress Indira Seonarain three weeks before his wife died, and defrauded former employers, including York Central Hospital. Mr. Raghunauth, in his own testi- mony, admitted stealing from his employers and lying to his wife, girl- friends and the police. While he feels "morally responsible" for his wife's death, he insisted he didn't kill her. On May 14 he said he gave Mrs. Raghunauth flowers, cooked her a "Mother's Day treat" and went out with his father, visiting from Guyana. When he returned, he said he found his wife dead on the bath- room floor. The Crown and defence are ex- pected to begin closing arguments May 12. Luigia Ayotte, the Durham District School Board's programs superinten- dent, in a letter to parents and guardians this week advised that, "at this time, the capacity for our schools to deliver the assessments within the given time frame is jeopardized." The Education Quality and Ac- countability Office, the Education Ministry's arm's-length testing agency, assesses the students' read- ing, writing and math skills each year. This year's assessment window is May 5 to 22. Durham members of the Elemen- tary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) have been working to rule since January. A week ago, local pres- ident Rachel Gencey announced teachers would not administer the tests to students in classes, and if principals went ahead with them anyway, educators would not super- vise the students. Teachers on Tues- day began limiting supervisory duties to 60 minutes per teacher per week. "In the next couple of weeks, it may be happening, it depends on how the situation unfolds," Ms. Ayotte said. "We can go until I think the second week in June. The schools can actual- ly choose their dates within that (time frame)." She said the assessments might have to be delayed even further, adding, "We're not anticipating it." During the work-to-rule, principals have had to pick up the slack caused by teachers' withdrawal from some duties. However, Ms. Ayotte said it would be a tall order for administra- tors to take over the job of running the tests in schools. "One school has five Grade 3 class- es, one of our larger schools, and it would be virtually impossible," she said. As well, Ms. Ayotte said it would not be fair to students to go ahead, since they would not have adequate preparation before for the assess- ments. "The bottom line is the valid- ity of the results and what we do with them," she said. Her letter noted schools would give parents and guardians at least three days notice before beginning the as- sessments. In an interview Friday, Ms. Gencey downplayed the importance of the provincial assessments. "It's a standardized test; it's just a snapshot of the year," she said. "I think the teachers' assessment is a much more valid tool. I don't think it's earth-shattering." www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, May 4, 2003 PAGE 3 P 1735 PICKERING PKWY AT BROCK RD1735 PICKERING PKWY AT BROCK RD 905-686-2309905-686-2309 CANADIAN TIRE AUTO SERVICECANADIAN TIRE AUTO SERVICE Mon - Sat 7:30 am - 6 pm Sun 9 am - 6 pm OIL, LUBE & FILTEROIL, LUBE & FILTER MOTORHOME SUMMER MAINTENANCEMOTORHOME SUMMER MAINTENANCE • Motomaster Oil Filter • Grease Chassis 99999595 ** Brake Inspection Included* • Check All Chassis Fluids • Complete Front End Inspection • Brake Inspection • Check Belts, Hoses, Coolant, Lights Excludes Diesels. Miller has operated a similar facility to the Pickering proposal in Hali- fax for four years, says Mr. McArthur. The plant would take a year to 15 months to build. According to the waste man- agement study commissioned by the Region and released last week, the Miller Pickering facili- ty was one of two "innovative" waste diversion proposals put forward for consideration dur- ing the recent request for pro- posals Durham sent out. Mr. Watson said staff did not make a recommendation on either facil- ity because it first wanted to get all the collection processes co- ordinated throughout the Re- gion's eight municipalities so it knew how much organic materi- al it would have before proceed- ing further. strategy," Blair McArthur, Miller's vice-president told the committee. He stressed it doesn't matter who collects the waste or how it is collected provided the materials are separated out. Oshawa and Whitby use municipal employ- ees and equipment to collect garbage while Pickering and Ajax use contractors. Durham council has stated it wants to get all eight munic- ipalities diverting their organ- ics out of landfill garbage by 2004 to lower the cost of dis- posal and to reduce the Re- gion's dependency on Michi- gan-based landfills. Peter Watson, Durham's waste manager, says the first step is to get everyone collect- ing garbage in a way that al- lows the organics to be sepa- rated out. Pickering has ex- pressed interest in beginning the program this year. Miller says although there is no more room at its Richmond Hill fa- cility to take the Pickering or- ganics, it could find an alter- native facility in the short- term. The proposed Pickering fa- cility would be an indoor processor that would convert the organics to compost to the final curing stage. At that point, it is taken to an outdoor facility to be blended before it is sold as soil enhancer. Miller is looking at potential outdoor sites for the final processing stage within Durham, says Mr. McArthur, who points out this would allow the Region to process the majority of its garbage within its borders and "be a leader" in waste diver- sion. The Region's finance and works committee members are recom- mending Pickering begin the pro- gram, already in place in four other Durham municipalities (Clarington, Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock) as soon as possible. If Whitby, Oshawa and Ajax agree to collect the kitchen waste separately from regular garbage, they could begin the pro- gram sometime in late 2004. Those municipalities still need to determine how they could change their existing pickup to accommodate the pro- gram. The organic pickup program al- lows residents to dispose of kitchen scraps, including meat and dairy, into bins provided by the Region for curbside pickup. Each resident is provided with an under-the-counter container for use in the kitchen. The container is used in conjunction with biodegradable liners, which, once filled, can be transferred to a larger bin for weekly pickup. The committee also recommended the Region expand the Blue Box col- lection program, beginning this June, in Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa and Whit- by to include additional items such as juice boxes, gable top containers, all plastic containers with a twist-off top, aerosol cans and empty paint cans. The recommendations go before reg ional council Wednesday, May 7. P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, May 4, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Working to gether, not against Pickering, business group agree on plan for good of community Good things can happen when municipal officials and local business leaders meet halfway to resolve issues of mutual concern. So it is with Mount Pleasant Group Cemeteries and the City of Pickering, which resolved concerns over a proposed pedestri- an trail in the Duffin Heights Neighbourhood plan that would wind through one of the properties owned and operated by Mount Pleasant. It is but one part of the neighbourhood plan that is meant to act as a link between a future Seaton commu- nity with already established development in south Pickering. The cemetery operator quite properly raised concerns over the public trail through the quiet, natural surroundings of the cemetery, noting it preferred "passive recreation" uses such as "reading books on benches". The trail, as proposed, didn't offer assurances that were ac- ceptable to Mount Pleasant, setting the stage for further nego- tiations and modifications to the plan. In a matter of weeks, issues were addressed, changes were made that were deemed acceptable by all parties and, in the long run, citizens of Pickering will benefit from the dialogue. This is a small issue, certainly, but one that symbolizes the achievements that can be reached through thoughtful debate, a willingness to compromise and a view to the future. The City of Pickering approached the issue with ideas and open minds. The Mount Pleasant Group acknowledged the benefits of a trail and came armed with a willingness to consid- er all options. This approach, one that is inclusive and respectful of differ- ences, should guide the City in all of its dealings. It is far better to give up a little in the pursuit of a goal than give up everything in pursuit of exercising power. For its part, Mount Pleasant is setting an example for other landowners in Pickering who can add value to the community through the pursuit of mutually beneficial goals. That can translate into other areas of land use and develop- ment and sets an impressive example of what can be achieved when differing opinions are heard, debated and considered honestly and openly. Thus, a trail will eventually be built on the site with appro- priate measures to respect the rights of cemetery visitors, to as- suage the concerns of the landowner and to create an impor- tant new natural setting for Pickering residents to enjoy. See what happens when people work together. Perhaps a similar method can be used to resolve the vast dif- ferences between the City of Pickering and the Province on the Duffin Rouge Agricultural Preserve. Enough about all the SARS scares TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: For weeks now, we have been bom- barded with frightening figures of SARS victims. Every day an update. 'There are now 286 probable cases,'etc. All along I have been saying, why don't they tell us about all the people in this category who tested negative and went back to work, etc., reducing the figure and putting our minds at rest. Now that the World Health Organi- z ation has threatened our pocket- books, suddenly the number changes dramatically. But wait, don't get too comfortable, a crow died in Newmar- ket this week, and we now have to be scared of West Nile Virus. Please do not think I am making light of these diseases and their effects on the human race. But are we not suf- fering from information overload, must we hear it 60 times a day (they even interrupt my soap opera to tell me it's coming up). Now the teachers and education workers are aiming for another pay in- crease, the union gives them no choice, I'm sure the teachers etc., would be quite happy if not spurred on by peo- ple who have to justify their existence. The guessing here is that lacrosse provided by the Ajax- Pickering Rock in the Ontario Lacrosse Association's Senior 'B' league will catch on -- just as the National Lacrosse League's (NLL) Toronto Rock has capti- vated GTA audiences with its pro brand at the Air Canada Centre. For anyone not in the know, the Ajax-Pickering Rock is one of two expansion teams in the nine-team OLA senior 'B' loop for the 2003 season. The brainchild of area residents and co-owners Rob Roche and Paul St. John, the Rock was forged to follow on the heels and success of the local minor lacrosse program, also known as the Rock, that started several years ago. The Rock held tryouts in late April with more than 50 players vying for the approximately 18 roster spots. Its regular-season debut came last night (Saturday) at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex against the defending cham- pion Owen Sound Woodsmen. The team will play another 15 games throughout the spring and summer with seven more home games, mostly on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons, at the complex. Although the sport's roots run deep in other areas of Durham Region, with Oshawa, Clarington and especially Whitby springing to mind, lacrosse has virtually been ignored at the grassroots level in these parts until recently. Anyone wishing to play -- either at the minor league level or junior 'A', 'B' or major series -- had to travel to Whitby or Oshawa. Ajax and Pickering, however, have produced some notable players. Coming to mind is Ajax resident Gee Nash, a goaltender who toiled in the Whitby minor system and won at every level. He won the Minto Cup national title with the Whitby Warriors as a ju- nior and has played several sea- sons in the pros with the New Yo rk entry in the NLL. Niall Maynard, another Ajacian, was also a Minto Cup champ with the Whitby Warriors and has con- tinued to play at the Major Series level with the Brooklin Redmen. The Rock's games promise to be exciting, given the high energy and speed of the game. The play- ers, who play for the love of the sport, have all come from other senior programs, as well as some who've played at the junior level. The one notable exception is mountain-of-a-man goaltender Mike Miron who has risen through the ranks to arrive in the pros with the Columbus Land- sharks this year. The plan would see 215 geared-to- income units built in Durham with a contribution of $5 million from the federal government and $400,000 from the Province. Over 20 years, local property taxpayers would need to add to that with the Region mak- ing a $5-million contribution through waived development charges and tax reductions to the developer. Area municipalities that host the projects would have to contribute an additional $3.2 million between them. Other incentives, such as land donations could also be provided by municipalities. But regional councillors at Wednesday's finance meeting were concerned the incentives to private developers to get the units built may be a bad deal for the public forced to foot the bill. A maximum of 45 per cent of the units would be owned by a not-for- profit housing agency - up to 25 per cent for municipal non-profit agen- cies and up to 20 per cent for private non-profit. The remaining units would remain under control of the developer who must abide by rent control guidelines on those units for 20 years. After that, the developer would be free to sell or increase rents on those units under his control. The non-profit units would remain under the ownership of those agencies. While some councillors joked they might want to get into the housing development business to take ad- vantage of the deal, finance commis- sioner Jim Clapp noted the private sector reception to the plan has been cool. "The private sector is not lining up to take this on," Mr. Clapp said. "Whether this program gets off the ground (even if council approves it) is debatable. The whole thing is shaky at best." The Region must notify the Province by Oct. 31 if it plans to take advantage of the federal/provincial financing, which leaves a short win- dow for the Region to work with mu- nicipalities and developers to bring projects on line. Regional staff are also concerned about a requirement the projects be tendered for the lowest bid instead of working through a request for pro- posal process where the Region and municipalities would have more con- trol over the type of developments selected. The committee recommended sending the proposal to area munici- palities for consideration. However, it is also recommending that the Re- gion notify the Province it has con- cerns with the "lack of significant participation" by the Province, the limitations on the percentage of housing allocated to non-profit hous- ing participation, the short time- frame to submit project proposals and the need to tender the project. Pickering kids stack up Phin students show off skills at Invention Convention PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ––––Young city inventors showcased their ideas at the recent sixth annual Invention Conven- tion. "The students worked very hard," said Eleanor McIntosh, Grade 7 and 8 teacher at Elizabeth B. Phin Public School. "It was a good learning expe- rience." The school was the sole representative from Ajax and Pickering at the event, which included stu- dents from the Toronto, To ronto Catholic, York Region, Halton, Dufferin- Peel Catholic and Durham District School Boards. They all gathered in downtown Toronto's Commerce Court, which was particularly exciting for Elizabeth B. Phin's students, said Ms. McIn- tosh. "It went really well," she said. Grade 7 students Scott Paterson, Adam Ray and Andrei Vlagioiu were the creators of the 'E-Z Stack Chair', which can be com- pacted completely, but also adjusted for height through its legs. In recognition of their inventions, all students received a certificate of participation. The event was part of the Learning Partner- ship's program 'Investi- gate! Invent! Innovate! Ask The Podiatrist: My feet perspire a great deal, and I find myself with itchy feet that always crack between the toes. My friends at the health club tell me I have an athlete’s foot problem. Do you think I do, and what can I do to stop or prevent it from recurring? Your friends are right. It does, indeed sound as if you do have athlete’s feet (TINEA PEDIS). First, I must tell you that you don’t need to be an athlete to develop this skin condition. It is caused by a fungus which flourishes is a warm, dark, moist environment. As feet may perspire more with athletics, there may be a slightly higher incidence of athlete’s feet in people who participate in sports. Athlete’s feet can occur in the healthiest of people with the best feet. It is usually not contagious unless the proper conditions to ensure its growth exist. The area itself often has a reddish line with flaking, whitish skin, which peels or sloughs off. This is nature’s way of trying to rid the body of the fungus. The most common areas are between the toes. There are many ways to try and prevent the problem from occurring The best is to avoid walking barefooted in areas such as health clubs, swimming pool decks and common shower areas. Always wear shower shoes. Secondly, you should keep the environment of the foot as dry as possible. Wear cotton or wool socks, not nylon, polyester or rayon. Natural f ibres breath, and therefore, keep the foot dryer. Also, wear shoes that are made of leather or canvas. Shoes that are made to keep water out will keep perspiration in. Dry your feet well after every bath or showe r, especially between the toes. Putting socks on a foot already wet from the shower will hasten the occurrence of the athlete’s feet. Always put your socks on first when getting dressed even before your underwear. This will prevent the spread of the fungus to the groin, which is also a warm, dark, moist environment. Sometimes the nails may also become infected by the fungus. They thicken and become yellow. There is a tendency of the nails to reinfect the foot, so flare-ups are usually only temporarily controlled by medication. Once the fungus gets a “foot hold” on the nails, it is difficult to eliminate the problem. Tr eatment of an athlete’s foot problem involves: (1) Don’t scratch the area, as you will spread the infection. (2) Keep the area dry, cool and in the light as much as possible. (3) Wear socks and shoes made of natural materials. (4) Keep feet covered in public areas. (5) Over the counter creams and/or powders may help milder infections, as well as soaking the feet in tepid saline salt water. (6) Prescription creams or orals may be prescribed for more chronic conditions. (7) If a secondary bacterial infection occurs (misery loves company), that will also inflame the area - then a cortisone or an antibacterial cream may be prescribed. Usually fungal infections are easily controlled, but they can recur if the conditions needed by the fungus are met. It seems that some people are more prone to these problems. Remember, you don’t need to be an athlete to develop athlete’s feet. BEARD-CHIROPODIST Foot orthoses are devices that fit into your shoes that are designed to correct the alignment of your foot and gait. By cor recting the alignment, many painful conditions can be corrected. Many people have had poor, unsuccessful results with orthotics in the past, leading them to believe that orthotics are not going to help. James Beard, a registered Chiropodist at the Ajax Foot Clinic & Orthotic Centre believes “not all orthotics are created equally.” Many poor outcomes with orthotics could be alleviated with the following: • The impression of your foot must be done in a non-weightbearing plaster cast. This method is called a subtalar joint neutral plaster cast. It is the gold standard in the professional foot care industry, and many insurance companies are now mandating its use. Technical computer foot scans, and foam box impressions, tend to lead to poor orthotics. • Be sure the person prescribing the devices is a registered foot care professional. Chiropodists and Podiatrists are the ONLY regulated foot professionals educated exclusively in the assessment and treatment of foot disorders. A foot professional will look at your foot, but will also ask you many questions about your health. Orthotics differ based on health conditions, foot types, weight, and others. All of these factors must be addressed when prescribing orthoses. Foot professionals are also extensively trained in looking for poor foot mechanics and gait abnormalities. You wouldn’t come to a foot care office to get corrective eyeglasses, so why would you go elsewhere to get foot orthotics? See the professionals. The Ajax Foot Clinic & Orthotic Centre’s chief Chiropodist James Beard, uses all the above mentioned techniques in prescribing and manufacturing foot orthoses. The Ajax Foot Clinic & Orthotic Centre is always accepting new patients, and no referral is necessary. We offer evening and daytime appointments. We are located at 48 Church Street South, Ajax. The war in Iraq is a great cause for upset and concern, while the outbreak of the mysterious SARS virus or 'Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome' has Canadian health officials and media talking 'killer flu pandemics'. While paying attention to your immune system may seem like a low priority, in fact, according to Dr. James LaValle, R.Ph., N.D., C.C.N, a pharmacist, doctor of naturopathic medicine and certified clinical nutritionist and author of Cracking the Metabolic Code (Basic Health 2003), bolstering immune system function is never more important than during times of crisis. Dr. LaValle advocates plant nutrients can help support healthy immunity Of primary concern is the effect of all this stress on the immune system, or the intricate system that fights sickness and disease. Under acute and chronic stress the body's adrenal glands secrete excess cortisol. High levels of cortisol cause cells to die in the thymus gland, spleen and lymph nodes, the centers of immune cell production and activity. Dr. LaValle says, "the impact of stress and excess cortisol on the immune system makes us more vulnerable to sickness. By maintaining a healthy immune system, especially during times of stress, people can increase their odds to fight infection." One of the most important things people can do for the immune system is to ensure adequate nutritional intake. In addition to vitamins and minerals, plant sterols and sterolins are known to help support the immune system. Sterols and sterolins are essential plant nutrients that occur naturally in all fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and soy products. Dr. LaValle notes that Professor Patrick JD Bouic, Ph.D., the Head of Immunology at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town, South Africa, and one of the world’s leading experts on natural plant molecules says, "more than two decades of clinical research shows that phytosterols play an important role in optimizing the immune system." While healthy lifestyle and dietary choices are critical, individuals may also benefit from an immune support supplement. Moducare®, a scientifically-proven and award- winning (2003 'Best Immune Supplement' from Health Products Business) daily supplement of sterols and sterolins supports the immune system ensuring it is ready when called into action. Science shows Moducare® to be safe and effective The safety and effectiveness of Moducare®has been extensively tested. Since 1994, the successful studies using Moducare®have been published in six major medical journals including: •International Journal of Immunopharmacology; •Cell Biology International; •Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care and •The International Journal of Sports Medicine. These studies investigated the effects of a proprietary blend of plant sterols and sterolins (found only in Moducare®) on various types of immune suppression. In addition, in both long- term and standard toxicology studies, pre-clinical testing and clinical observations, Moducare®was found to have no negative side effects. Other immune system support includes… Dr. LaValle says, "even in times like this we can limit the impact of stress. Once we grasp the connection between stress and the immune system, we can begin to take steps to control it. We can exercise more often, get the rest we need, adopt a healthier attitude and choose foods rich in immune-support nutrients." These immune-support nutrients include vitamins A, C and E, minerals such as magnesium and zinc, antioxidants such as coenzyme Q10, Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Glutathione. The 80,000 square-foot facility, to be joined to Iro- quois Park Sports Centre in Whitby, will open its doors to the 94,000 elder residents living in East Central Ontario in need of health and fitness pro- grams. It's a number expected to grow to 15 0,000 by 2028. "We're looking for it to be a world-class facility," says Ed Crouch, vice-pres- ident of the project. "That's our ultimate goal." The opening of the facil- ity is scheduled for 2005. The non-profit corpora- tion began planning for the centre in summer 2000. The project has been a partnership between Vari- ety Village, Grandview Children's Treatment Centre, WindReach Farms, Town of Whitby, Durham school boards, Durham College and the University of Ontario In- stitute of Technology. Sharing resources with Iroquois Park, the $21-mil- lion facility will provide access to weight rooms, conference rooms, a gym- nasium, ice pads, baseball diamonds, a restaurant, tennis courts, waterfront trails, swimming pools and an indoor track. The centre will be barrier-free, focusing its services to be accessible to all people. Mr. Crouch says sharing resources with Iroquois Park, along with access to the waterfront, will give the project a boost other facilities don't have. "These are things that are not available in other facilities," he adds. Financial targets for the project include: $3 million from both levels of govern- ment (the Province has al- ready committed its share via a SuperBuild grant, and a decision from Ot- tawa is expected soon); $3 million from the Town of Whitby; $1 million from Durham Region; $7 mil- lion from corporate spon- sors; and $4 million from community and individual sponsors. Construction won't begin, explains Mr. Crouch, until 80 per cent of the funding has been achieved. Along with the senior population, the Abilities Centre will be open to about 235,000 individuals with disabilities in the East Ontario region and over 43,000 children. Abilities Centre Durham will be used by residents from Pickering to Belleville, and as far north as Peterborough and Orillia, says Mr. Crouch. People living in other countries, he adds, will also be drawn to the facil- ity in the future, and the centre will be designed with the ability to host in- ternational events. "The people in the re- g ion will be proud," ex- plains Mr. Crouch, who adds transportation to the facility is being closely looked at to ensure all can utilize the centre. The project's co-ordina- tors are taking the trans- portation issue seriously, he says. "We have a committee set up," he says. "That's one of the things we're working on right now." Whitby Councillor Shirley Scott has also ex- pressed an interest in en- suring proper transporta- tion for the Abilities Cen- tre's users. "Transportation would be a large part of the suc- cess of the facility," she in- sists. "I imagine that there will be proper transporta- tion... We would have to make some sort of arrangement." The project's co-ordina- tors are currently seeking a sponsor for the naming of the facility. "Now we're into the next stages of the project," says Mr. Crouch. "Putting a name to the building. Something like the Air Canada Centre building." Other fund-raising events for the Abilities Centre will be announced in the future. Jay Living life to the fullest Long-term cancer survivor has been through plenty in past 28 years BByy JJaannee MMccDDoonnaalldd Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM –––– Just before her 10th birthday, Christine Wells-Stew- art's parents were told their daughter had only three weeks to live. When they asked what could be done, they were told to take her to Disneyland. The Oshawa family chose not to head for the California theme park but to stay and fight the often-fatal illness - advanced Hodgkin's disease. That was 1974 and those three weeks have stretched into almost three decades, during which the now 38-year-old Christine has been to Disneyland many times. It hasn't always been easy and challenges remain, but Ms. Wells- Stewart's philosophy is one worth noting, especially during cancer month. "Life is living each moment like you'll never see another," she says. "Survivors condense their lives like soup. In a short time span they do everything." The fatigue, severe weight loss, pain, surgeries, years of chemotherapy and radiation treatments -- after which her long braided hair fell out -- are distant childhood memories. Through- out her ordeal, Ms. Wells-Stewart attended Brownies, sang in the church choir and went to Sunday school. She excelled at school, using her down time to study. In keeping with her optimistic philosophy, she remembers those long drives twice a week for two weeks (followed by two weeks off) to the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. One of the Canadian Cancer Society's Durham Unit volunteer drivers had long braids, too. "She was a beautiful lady," re- members Ms. Wells-Stewart. "When mine fell out, she let me tug hers. I remember drivers showing up with birthday pre- sents.... They went way beyond the call of duty, especially when you remember they were volun- teers." When she and her parents were told in early 1977 that she was in remission, they had a party. "And I stomped my foot and said 'I'm going to do everything I can as fast as I can.'" And so she has. Ms. Wells-Stewart married her older sister's brother-in-law. "I married the best man," she jokes, referring to the first time she met her future husband at her sister's wedding. She gradu- ated from Central Collegiate after she became a wife and mother and had lived in Scotland for a year. She then earned a diploma in public relations and worked as a flight attendant for Wa rd Air and National Airlines. A business course took her to work in downtown Toronto and anoth- er baby (she was told she could never have children) took up most of the 1990s. Today, she works with her husband in his ed- ucational computer business. She's also writing a book - about the late effects experienced by those who survived childhood cancer. "When I turned 18 years old," she explains, "I was asked to par- ticipate in a long-term study of pediatric cancer survivors. I have spent many hours filling out forms and giving information to the University of Minnesota in the U.S. which is being used to compile further information re- garding cancer, causes, treat- ments, cure rates, relationships, fertility issues ... Most important, late effects were calculated and a book was published in 2000. Any long-term survivor should have a copy of 'Childhood Cancer Sur- vivors'." Although she had been free from Hodgkin's disease since 19 77, Ms. Wells-Stewart is facing serious late effects of treatments she received as a child. She is checked for second bouts of cancer during annual checkups at Princess Margaret Hospital. She makes sure she gets an annual flu shot because of a compromised immune system and takes antibiotics before den- tal work. She's had chicken pox four times and shingles, but the greatest challenge the intrepid survivor now faces is extensive scarring which caused her to suf- fer congestive heart failure last summer. "I hold fast to the thought that if I had not survived the Hodgkin's disease, I would never have had these 26 years and yes, I have filled them in and not wast- ed anytime doing so." There are no support groups for long-term survivors such as herself in Durham Region, so Ms. Wells-Stewart suggests the previ- ously mentioned book for others and the American Cancer Soci- ety's www.acor.org web site. She lauds both the Canadian Cancer Society, Durham Region Unit (12 Stanley Ct., Unit 3, Whitby) and Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre (86 Colborne St. W., Os- hawa) as good sources of infor- mation and offers her own e-mail address: christine@wellscomput- ers.com for survivors who would like to get in touch with her. Walter Passarella/ News Advertiser photo Christine Wells-Stewart was only given weeks to live after her diagnosis with Hodgkin’s disease as a child. Yet, 28 years later, the Durham woman is still liv- ing life to the fullest, and offering advice to other long-term cancer survivors. A/P PAGE 20 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, May 4, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Iwanowski: History still in the making Longtime News Advertiser photographer heads home DDUURRHHAAMM ––––Yo u can't pick the time and place where you're born. Take the fine spring day Andrew Iwanowski came into this world: May 16, 1938 - Warsaw, Poland. "When war started, my parents and I were in Warsaw," recalls the award-winning Metroland pho- tog rapher, who will retire in May from the Durham Region divi- sion, after more than 19 years of service. "My dad was an employee of an airplane factory. A bomb fell on the factory so my dad was with- out work. On Sept. 1, 1939 we went back to the village (Wasil- iszki) where my ancestors came from and where it was easier to live. I lived with my mom. Dad was arrested by the Soviets. On Sept. 17, 1939, the Soviets had moved to the east. Dad returned to Warsaw and was involved in the Underground Army." It was a pretty full first year for young Andrew and his parents. And in some terrible ways, it was just the beginning. On Aug. 22, 1939 Adolf Hitler authorized the "killing without pity or mercy all men, women and children of Pol- ish descent or language." Then on Sept. 1, the Germans invaded. Almost from the beginning of the Na zi occupation, there were ar- rests and executions. Yet the un- derground resistance movement grew and was centred in Warsaw. "My dad's brother smuggled me back to Warsaw," says Mr. Iwanowski of his early memories. "He tricked me when he loaded me on the train. I was five years old in 1943. From 1943-44 I lived in Warsaw in an apartment where others who were involved in the Underground Army lived. Because my father was also in- volved, we had to move. Mom survived the war but lost a baby. Dad survived the Warsaw Upris- ing (Aug. 1, 1944) but was killed later by the Germans for being part of the patriots." As the war finally came to a close, he says his family's village and the towns around Warsaw were "empty of people, complete- ly destroyed." He has one partic- ular recollection from 1945 of see- ing two Germans speeding away "like crazy" on a horse cart they stole. "I was just happy they did- n't hit me," he remembers. As a young man, Mr. Iwanows- ki entered Warsaw University. But it was his interest in chemi- cal studies at a polytechnical school that piqued his curiosity for photography. He recalls a job with a hunting magazine as being one of his best working ex- periences and where he took his favourite photo: a deer running through a Polish wood early one fall morning. "I managed one shot only," he says. "Everything clicked." From the magazine he moved to general press photography. Again, history and timing was about to cause Mr. Iwanowski's life to take a dramatic turn. On holiday to visit an uncle in Lon- don, England in 1981, martial law was declared in his homeland. He jokes he's "still on vacation more than 20 years later." "The British government gave me a work permit," he says. "I had family in Toronto and con- tacted them. They were not close family but they set up a sponsor- ship for me. "When I arrived in Canada, I immediately became a landed immigrant," he continues. "Three or four years later, I was a Cana- dian citizen. Now I feel more Canadian than Polish. I am very well at home in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada." Professionally, he says he's par- ticularly enjoyed working with younger colleagues, with whom he's shared his years of experi- ence. He first worked in Canada at the Scarborough Mirror as part of an employment program for newcomers. When the grant ex- pired, he heard of an opening in Metroland's Durham division. "And the rest is history," he laughs. Now at retirement age, Mr. Iwanowski is headed back to the place where he was born, al- though the part of Poland where he is from has been renamed Be- larus. Does the adage 'you can never go home again' deter our Metroland photographer? No way. New generations of the Iwanowski family are waiting for him, one a grandchild only weeks old. It’s all part of efforts to encourage a positive lifestyle at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School in Pickering. “We run everyday re- gardless of the weather,” says M.J. Marrin, a fifth grade teacher at St. Mar- g uerite. “We also promote healthy living, the kids bring in healthy snacks everyday.” Marrin started the stu- dents running everyday not only for the physical benefits, but to help them with their schoolwork. “The students are more focused after the r un, it’s a huge differ- ence,” she says. “It’s a good behaviour manage- ment tool for teachers.” Cathy VanDen Hoogen, part of Program Support at the school, says the children love the extra ac- tivities and the reaction has been incredible. “We get great response from the kids, we have so many people come out for our teams and programs,” she says. “The participa- tion is fantastic at this school.” The students not only focus more in class, they have fun and learn that keeping in shape is impor- tant in maintaining health. “It’s fun, the best thing is running with friends,” says Megan Spicer, a Grade 5 student. “It’s good to keep fit and stay healthy.” Michael Straub, also in Grade 5, loves lacing up his shoes daily. “I am a long-distance runner, I like running a lot,” he says. “We have a snack before running so we burn up energy and it’s like an extra gym class so we can keep fit.” Along with running, the school has cross- country, track and field, a jump rope club and both inter-school and intra- mural sports. Grade 8 students help run the intramural pro- grams twice a week over the lunch period. “The exercise gives you endorphins, which makes you happy and it keeps you focused,” says Grade 8 student Larissa Eyitene. “We are in the gym twice a week, once for the older students and once for the younger kids.” The jump rope club started five years ago after a great response from the kids after a Jump Rope for Heart campaign. Both teams played tough defence and at times were penalized for rough play. East Side scored its resulting free throws but the bankers weren't able to convert their chances from the charity stripe. Open scoring chances were limited but both teams worked hard to create shots under pressure. Mario's rolled out to a big lead, with the bankers unable to close the gap. Entering into its 8th season, Whispering Ridge was designed to accommodate novice and advanced players alike. Bent grass tees and sculptured fairways combined with a pic- turesque view and virgin rough are the notable qualities that generate the increasing popularity of Whispering Ridge's brisk 18- hole challenge. This course offers a balanced mixture of short and long holes measuring in at a total of 4773 yards. Whispering Ridge is also the perfect choice for small groups of 20 to the cor- porate golf tournament of 200. The club features a two-level clubhouse, pro shop, large dining room, golf lounge, patio and complete locker and shower facilities. Golf Hints:Golf Pro Jerry Nemish says #3 is longer that it appears so keep that in mind when choosing your club. Aim to the left of the green and it will kick to the right for that hole in one.
