Atop down approach Wheels Pullout Fund-raiser helps ailing Ajax girl A fund-raising dance is planned for this weekend, with the proceeds to be used to cover the medical costs of a seven-year-old Ajax girl. Ginelle Smith has been fighting leukemia on and off since she was three. In addition to helping cover some of Ginelle’s medical expenses, a portion of the proceeds will be do- nated to the Canadian Cancer Soci- ety. First diagnosed with leukemia in 1998, Ginelle underwent prolonged and aggressive chemotherapy treat- ments, and on Oct. 6, 2001 the dis- ease went into remission. But, on Dec. 5 of last year, it re- turned and she had to be rushed to the Hospital for Sick Children in To r onto. Ginelle is now awaiting a match for a bone marrow transplant. The dance is being held Satur- day, March 8 at 8 p.m. at Club Carib, 600 Wentworth St. E., Oshawa. The cost is $10 and features in- clude a disc jockey, refreshments, raffles, prizes and a silent auction. For more information or to by a ticket, call Alan Hayes at 905-579- 6749. What’s On... While they took part in a province-wide teachers’ strike over the Ontario gov- ernment’s controversial Bill 160 in 1997, educators here have never taken labour ac- tion against the Durham Dis- trict School Board. So what’s changed at the local level in recent years? Bill Butcher was the Ele- mentary Teachers’ Federa- tion of Ontario’s Durham’s president or co-president for a decade before retiring in 2002. In an interview, he said a number of factors are in- volved, but chiefly the fact that the provincial ETFO of- fice is in charge of bargaining for Durham teachers. He notes that in the past, local teacher representatives did not bring as much provincial experience and awareness to the bargaining table. That’s the date set for the grand opening of the new 13 5,000-square-foot building at Bayly Street and Squires Beach Road, about three months later than originally expected. Several planning details have pushed back the pro- ject, said the markets’ man- ager Peter Freeman. “By the time we go through the permit process and the site plan process it will be late May,” he said. “We hope to start construction June 1.” In the meantime, there will be no temporary location as hoped. Vendors vacated the Metro East Trade Centre Jan. 31 to allow for redevelop- ment into several big box stores by property owner First Professional Shopping Centres. Its front exterior wall was the only thing left standing this week. Charter Hall, the company managing the markets, had tried to negotiate with First Pro for a temporary struc- ture in the northwest end of the trade centre parking lot to house vendors until their new location was available. Durham Regional Police said a vehicle carrying three people drove off after hitting another car on Pickering Parkway about 12:40 p.m. Saturday. A patrol officer who wit- nessed the minor crash acti- vated his flashing lights and tried stopping the car, which pulled into the Pickering Recreation Complex, police said. All three suspects bolted from the vehicle and the 16- year-old was nabbed by offi- cers on Alwin Circle follow- ing a foot chase. The other two suspects got away. Police said a silver hand- g un was found near the vehi- cle and several rounds of ammunition were seized from the floor of the car. The teen has been charged with failing to stop at an ac- cident, flight from police, possession of a dangerous weapon, breach of recog- nizance and numerous firearm possession charges. Durham elementary bargaining team takes hard line Kendall and Harold Vigoda, two members of the ETFO provincial takeover team, know what’s going on at other locals and other boards. “These two have all that in- formation,” says Mr. Butcher. “They bring that to the table. They bring a more aggressive attitude to the bargaining table.” In general, the provincial body’s involvement has been “very positive” for local teach- ers, he says, but acknowledges that in 2001, when ETFO provincial negotiated for Durham teachers, he felt like they were running the show. “I felt like I had no power in the bargaining; I thought it was all in Dave Kendall’s hands,” says Mr. Butcher. Rachel Gencey, Durham ETFO’s current president, is quick to point out that provin- cial ETFO comes in at the local’s request. In an interview, she admits to being annoyed by board claims that the provincial team is call- ing the shots at the bargaining table, that there is a “provincial agenda” at work in Durham, which explains the current con- frontation with the board. Ms. Gencey says there is no provincial agenda, and when teachers and the board sit down to negotiate, six of the seven teacher representatives at the table are from the local unit. “A re we being handcuffed and locked in a back room? Certainly not,” she says. Ms. Gencey says the board is overlooking its teachers in cit- ing a provincial influence. “They’re really underestimat- ing them, and it’s a really big mistake to do that,” she says. Mr. Butcher says ETFO Durham members teach small- er children, and “that has al- ways made us a little less ag- gressive.” He notes, however, that over the past few years, the board has hired several hundred new teachers per year, most of them young teachers who may com- pare their situation with col- leagues in York Region, for ex- ample, where public elemen- tary teachers are the highest paid in the Greater Ontario Area. “They’re saying, ‘why can’t we have that in Durham? That’s happening across the province’,” says Mr. Butcher. And, he says the youth move- ment is reflected on the Durham unit’s bargaining com- mittee as well, where “there are not as many old guys like me on the executive anymore.” Craig Burch, the Durham District School Board’s educa- tion director, doesn’t buy the argument that younger teach- ers are a factor in a more con- frontational union stance. “I don’t think it has anything to do with that,” he says in an interview. He is the board’s former em- ployee relations’ superinten- dent, previously in charge of bargaining. Mr. Burch says the influence of the provincial exec- utive is the big factor. He notes that on ETFO strike action bul- letins, three of the four contact names are provincial ETFO members. He cites “a combination be- tween a new executive and a greater provincial union spot- light on Durham” as the rea- sons for a tougher ETFO bar- gaining position. However, it seems not all Durham teachers, however, support a tougher ETFO here. Ms. Gencey did not dispute that at the Feb. 19 strike regis- tration meeting in Oshawa, a teacher stood up and ques- tioned the union’s hard-line ap- proach. She was apparently confront- ed by provincial members, after which she walked out of the meeting, followed by some of her peers. Ms. Gencey acknowledges that some teachers are having trouble with the union’s tough approach to bargaining, with- drawing from duties and head- ing down the road to a strike. “For a small minority of our members, they’re having diffi- culty with it,” she says. Flea market vendors wait and see porary sites in the area, how- ever Tom Ris- tov, a member of the Pickering Markets Ten- ants Associa- tion, said they couldn’t find anything suit- ing their needs. “We tried to stay within Pickering but nothing came up,” said Mr. Ristov. The lack of a temporary loca- tion will have no bearing on the new site, stressed Mr. Freeman. “We held a vendor meeting Fe b. 20. We in- vited as many of them as we could get a hold of,” he said. “And over half of them filled out an applica- tion and made the deposit (for the new loca- tion). It’s a sure thing.” He points out the site’s builder, Invar Building Cor- poration, never asked for a spe- cific commit- ment to fill the 550 vendor and antique spaces at the new building before going ahead with the con- struction. At the Feb. 20 meeting, ven- dors were told Charter Hall and Invar are fully committed to the project and it will be moving for- ward, Mr. Free- man said. “In the mean- time, some (vendors) are going back to their weekday businesses. Some are going to other mar- kets to wait it out,” he said. About 35 new vendors from the Pickering Markets have r ecently brought their wares to Dr. Flea’s Hwy. 27 and Albion Flea Market in To r onto, says owner Allen Koffman. But 75 of his ven- dors tradition- ally have had booths set up both in Picker- ing and at his location. ✦ Durham, from page A1 ✦Flea, from page A1 • Lube, Oil, & Filter • 50 Point Inspection FREE Jug of Windshield Washer Fluid SPRING SPECIALS!! $39.95 Offer Expires Mar. 31/03 TAN FOR $4.00 FRIDAYS March Madness Applicable only to Super Beds Bed Maximums and Restrictions apply Buy 100 Minutes and Receive 30 Minutes Free Bed Maximums and Restrictions apply Offer Expires March 31, 2003 Bring in this ad to receive: To view this home call Stephanie English. The Global Positioning Satel- lite (GPS) system, which relies on a satellite signal to tail a ve- hicle, was secretly installed on the accused’s Toyota 4Runner in mid-June 2000 during the in- vestigation into the death of his wife, court heard. Hemoutie (Geeta) Raghunauth, 28, died of cyanide poisoning in the cou- ple’s Beaton Way home on Mother’s Day, May 14, 2000. Mr. Raghunauth, 31, has pleaded not guilty to first-de- gree murder. Detective Sergeant Steve Illing, head of the Durham Re- g ional Police homicide unit, said Mr. Raghunauth was placed under surveillance shortly after the investigation began into his wife’s death. A few weeks into the probe Mr. Raghunauth was charged by Toronto Police with defraud- ing a former employer, and re- leased on bail June 20, 2000. He was ordered not to leave Ontario or possess travel docu- ments as part of the terms of his release, the Superior Court jury trial was told Monday. But at 8:30 p.m. on June 28, the GPS system showed Mr. Raghunauth driving down the Queen Elizabeth Way, over the Burlington Skyway, and headed in the direction of the US bor- der at Niagara Falls. Sgt. Pat Davidson of Durham’s surveil- lance team alerted Det. Sgt. Illing and police hastily con- tacted border points, the detec- tive testified. Mr. Raghunauth was arrested at 9:55 p.m. by US customs, he testified. Mr. Raghunauth was re- turned to Durham police head- quarters, held overnight at 17 Division and interviewed the next day by Det. Sgt. Illing. In an earlier statement he gave the detective, Mr. Raghu- nauth had said his wife had been healthy and that he didn’t know how she died. The second videotaped statement, shown to jurors Monday, began with a confrontational tone, unlike the first interview earlier in May. “There’s no doubt in my mind, Ganesh, you are respon- sible for the death of He- moutie,” Det. Sgt. Illing says at the start. Mr. Raghunauth protests his innocence. “God knows and I know, I’m innocent. My wife was the best thing that I could have ever had... I never did anything wrong to her... Never did,” he said. He then suggested “voodoo,” or evil spirits caused his wife’s death. “I don’t know how well you know or how well you be- lieve in voodooism, but Geeta was sick through voodooism acts,” he said. Court heard Mrs. Raghu- nauth was often sick with strange illnesses and was taken by her husband and family to their native Guyana, and an- other time to New York, to see Hindu priests to rid her of Obeah, or evil spirits. “The priest said there’s some- one who did a big voodoo act on her, and that’s why she was be- having that way,” Mr. Raghu- nauth said. Det. Sgt. Illing told the ac- cused, “You’re a bright man... you cannot possibly expect me, unless you think I’m a fool, to accept the voodoo.” Mr. Raghunauth replied, “I’m just being honest with you.” Prosecutors say Mr. Raghu- nauth was having an affair with Indira Seonarain, a New York woman he was engaged to three weeks prior to his wife’s death. He told Det. Sgt. Illing that Ms. Seonarain was “a friend I met from on-line” in a computer chat room, and their relation- ship was platonic. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, March 5, 2003 PAGE A3 A/P Fun FREE Reading Week activities for kids & teens Starts Friday, March 7th All of the FREE activities listed below will be held at Centre Court. After I turned 40, my weight started creeping up every year. I was unhappy and disgusted with myself. No matter what I did, I couldn’t lose my weight. Food seemed to have some strange control over me. I couldn’t get past a bakery without loading up on breads and pastries. I knew that my health was at risk. I attended diet workshops and tried a variety of diets on my own. Nothing ever worked. I had become a yo-yo dieter. RESULTS I eat healthier foods and enjoy them. Hypnosis helped me to eliminate cravings, food binges and poor food choices. Best of all, I never feel deprived. I enjoy my life more and have energy to spare. Today I am a slender 118 lbs. and I owe it all to Positive Changes Hypnosis. MY RECOMMENDATION I am convinced that my results are permanent. I have not put on a single ounce since I started the Positive Changes Hypnosis Program. I know the yo-yo syndrome is over for good. If you don’t call your life will remain the same and you will have missed out on what could have been. I urge you to pick up your telephone and call now. OR LEASE WITH DOWN SECURITY DEPOSIT and OR ‘Voodoo acts’ caused wife’s death, accused told police HHEEMMOOUUTTIIEE RRAAGGHHUUNNAAUUTTHH Decision on Durham courthouse could come later this year DDUURRHHAAMM ––––A new Durham court- house, promised more than half a decade ago, isn’t exactly around the corner but behind-the-scenes work to get it here continues, says a provincial government spokesman. In September 2001, the Province issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) for developers interested in building a consolidated regional courthouse. Durham has 24 court- rooms in six different locations in ad- dition to the Crown attorney’s office. “The first phase of the request for qualifications is done,” says Mo- hammed Nakhooda, spokesman for Ontario SuperBuild Corporation, the arm of the provincial govern- ment overseeing the process. During that phase interested bidders were qualified based on their ability to meet technical requirements and to finance the project, says Mr. Nakhooda. The private sector would assume responsibility for the owner- ship, operation and maintenance of the facility. Last fall, Whitby-Ajax MPP Jim Flaherty said the new courthouse would be “the centrepiece for Durham Region.” In addition to se- cure court facilities, it could feature a public space possibly with some commercial and residential areas. “This will be a dramatic public space. The whole idea is not just a court building,” the MPP said. Once the developers were quali- fied based on technical and financial ability, the RFQ continued into phase two, says Mr. Nakhooda. That phase, still ongoing, is a review of the sites proposed by each developer to determine if specific site criteria are met. Those developers whose sites qualify will be invited to submit a full proposal likely sometime between “early and mid-spring,” says Mr. Nakhooda. It has al- most been four months and still no inquiry. “Yet people are being hit with rolling blackouts,” he added. Rolling up in an orange coach bus decked out in the words ‘Stop Hydro Privatization’, Mr. Hampton said he was responding to the In- dependent Market Operator’s (IMO) warnings on Monday that the power supply was so low it may result in brownouts in Ontario communities. “Part of the reason we’re in this f ix is the nuclear station behind us in Pickering has been shut down now for almost four years and there are major problems with the shutdown,” he said. The restart has run into a $2-bil- lion cost overrun and its reopening has been put off four times, mak- ing it three years overdue, the NDP leader said. In the meantime, the cost of hydro electricity is much higher than the 4.3 cents per kilowatt- hour the provincial government would like consumers to believe, he charged. “Yesterday, it was 39 cents per kilowatt-hour. The difference is being paid out in a subsidy people don’t see and that subsidy now amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars a month,” Mr. Hampton added. Options for Homes could then use those savings against the mortgage on the building’s accessible units to help lower the cost of their modifi- cation for purchasers. Under the plan, development charges wouldn’t be paid to the City until those units were resold. But local councillors argued it could be decades before those units were resold and fees were paid back to the City. Instead, they opted for a more short-term solution, proposing the deferral of development charges and cash-in-lieu of parkland until such time an above ground building permit is issued, or six months from the issuance of the below-ground permit, which ever occurs first. Interest on the $1.2 million is esti- mated at about $18,000. However, members pointed out the City wouldn’t be losing those dollars, just collecting them later in the development process. “We may get the money faster than if it wasn’t deferred,” said Coun. Holland. “It will help accelerate their timetable by freeing up some of their cash flow, and accelerate those dollars in getting to us.” The condominium would intensi- fy the downtown with a range of dif- ferent housing, he added. Mayor Wayne Arthurs said he looked forward to seeing the overall site completed, noting the con- struction would complete a 15-year development process for that cor- ner of the downtown. Wa rd 3 City Councillor David Pickles acknowledged with the de- ferral, Pickering is “in a small way” helping facilitate Options for Homes with their vision of provid- ing home ownership to those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it. “But maybe the City should have a policy, maybe something finan- cially different, when it comes to af- fordable and accessible units,” he said afterwards. Wa rd 1 Regional Councillor Mau- rice Brenner said the Region of Durham and local school boards may also want to help in providing some relief to Options for Homes in the timing of its payments. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, March 5, 2003 PAGE A5 P Highway 2 Brock RdLiverpool RdKingston Rd. Leading the group was Mayor Wayne Arthurs, who charged back $25,501 in mileage, conferences, meals and taxable benefits to the City last year. Typically, expenses were higher for regional council- lors, with the average just over $11,000. Wa rd 2 Regional Council- lor Mark Holland claimed slightly more at $13,012 last year. Numbers were more varied for city councillors. Topping the list was Bill McLean in Ward 2, who claimed $12,701, above that of Wa rd 3 City Councillor David Pickles at $9,630 and Ward 1 City Councillor Dave Ryan at $6,532. The difference stems from personal philosophy, said Coun. McLean, in that some councillors feel it less impor- tant to travel to outside con- ferences. “Being this is my first term on council, I felt it was im- portant to get to those con- ferences. “I also held a couple meet- ings in which I had to pay for the space,” he added. When it came to wages, Coun. McLean ranked the lowest of his peers at $25,788 because of experience. Most council members were paid just over $26,000, with Mayor Arthurs earning $63,127 for his Pickering duties. Region of Durham finance staff say they are still finaliz- ing the 2002 pay and expense report for regional council- lors, which should be made public at the March 19 fi- nance and administration committee. ✦ Pickering, from page A1 WWAAYYNNEE AARRTTHHUURRSS Mileage, conferences meals and taxable benefits totalled $25,500. TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: I am usually not a complain- er, but lately I am getting more annoyed by the lack of respect that certain dog owners have for everyone. On a recent outing during the thaw last week, I was alarmed to see more piles of dog excrement along the boulevards of St. Martin’s and Radom streets than I have ever seen in my life. My dog was walking in it, so when I got home and every day since, I must wash his feet. If that isn’t bad enough, today I found it on my front walk, and some of it is less than 10 feet from my front door. Until I saw this, I was not upset enough to write this let- ter, but today was the last straw. I have a video camera and am considering setting it up to face the street. I don’t like to be mean, but it makes me wonder what kind of people they are and even scari- er than that, what are their homes are like? If you are too lazy to clean up after your dog, then don’t have one. I’m sure that more people are, like me, getting fed up with such inconsiderate people. Fa ilure to pick up is not just disgusting, it is threatening to the health of pets — not to mention that if you track it into your homes it is nasty. VVaalleerriiee BByyeerrss PPiicckkeerriinngg Local resident dumbstruck at bid for five-year nuclear licences TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: Re: ‘Regulator pushes for longer nuke licence’, Feb. 21, 2003 One is dumbstruck by the recommendation of the Cana- dian Nuclear Safety Commis- sion (CNSC) to increase the li- censing period of the ‘B’ reac- tors at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. CNSC knows the reactors are old and no other nuclear plant in the world is surround- ed by as large a population. The Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) admitted it would not allow a new nuclear plant to be built in the same lo- cation. Why are hearings con- ducted in Ottawa, and not where the most people are af- fected? PNGS’s history of significant nuclear “incidents” every other year coinciding with current two-year licences prove short- er, not longer, licensing periods are needed: i.e. 1988 — radioac- tive iodine vented into environ- ment over several weeks; 1990 — severe flux tilt — large power shifts in the reactor core; 1992 — radiation-contaminated heavy water dumped into Lake Ontario, the largest tritium re- lease in CANDU history; 1994 — Emergency Coolant Injec- tion System used to avoid a meltdown for the first time in CANDU’s history and Cana- da’s worst accident at a com- mercial nuclear station; 1996 — 500 tonnes of water spilled into the number-six reactor build- ing. Safety equipment could have failed from water damage. By 19 97, the public learned that over the preceding 20 years, more than 1,000 tonnes of cop- per, zinc and other metals were dumped into Lake Ontario. Since 1997, Pickering ‘A’ re- mains shut down and Picker- ing ‘B’ is not 100 per cent oper- ational. AECB was right then, when the normal two-year operating licence term was shortened to six months. The regulators seem unwill- ing to learn from history. CNSC’s past shows “too little, too late” without guarantees. How can the public feel safe when the government is both safety regulator and major pro- moter of CANDU reactors around the world? Public trust must be earned. Instead of a hodgepodge of ‘A’s’, ‘B’s’ and ‘C’s’, there should be straight ‘A’s’ — in PNGS annual reports — before rewarding any extended five- year licences. MMaarriiaann MMaarrttiinn PPiicckkeerriinngg Local teacher defends work and colleagues TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: My name is Sheryl Lavery and I am a hard-working, dedi- cated, Durham teacher. I hold a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Education, a French qualifi- cation and a teacher-librarian specialist qualification. At my school, I am the site administrator, report-card ad- ministrator, volunteer, co-op and special events co-ordina- tor. I teach French and an in- novative new library program called Information Literacy. I keep the library open every day before and after school, and I offer Library @ Lunch two days per week. Each year, with the help of another dedicated colleague, I c oach five gymnastic teams over two terms. I also coach a track and field event in the spring. I organize, support and offer extra literacy programs to our students. I am currently working on two Bertelsmann projects for innovative new programs being offered at our school with the hope of making these programs available to all Durham students. All of this “extracurricular activity” for which I volunteer, takes between two and three hours per day of my time. Do I stand alone in my dedication to the students, to the commu- nity or to the board? Certainly not! My colleagues are also a ded- icated group who enhance the learning experience both in and out of the classroom. In a recent letter to the edi- tor we, as teachers, were charged to do our jobs, “which is teach,” and that is exactly what we are now doing and will continue to do until our board and our federation reach a fair and equitable settlement. With the current offer of low salary, low preparation time and low benefits, what quality- level teacher will look at our board and wish to begin a ca- reer here? My children are also in the Durham Board public system. I want for them, the highest quality, most dedicated profes- sional who will be attracted to Durham, and who will be en- couraged to stay with our board for years to come. Let us hope our board wants the same. SShheerryyll LLaavveerryy OOsshhaawwaa Work-to-rule by teachers in Durham only hurts kids TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: It was interesting to read a student’s perspective of the Durham District School Board’s inability to assist stu- dents by agreeing to the DDSB teacher demands and thus ending the present work-to- rule campaign. But is this real- ly the right answer to the prob- lem facing the board and teachers? I vote to take the side of the kids. Our kids are the ones who suffer and are dragged into the middle of every squabble be- tween the board and teachers. Is this fair? The teachers say the kids are their only leverage. The kids just want to enjoy their whole school experience. We, as par- ents, remember our teachers so much more as we grow older so shouldn’t this be a positive experience? Why are my kids’ teachers telling their students the rea- sons they’re working to rule and so leaving me to explain it again when they get home from school? What has the explanation by teachers to my kids got to do with teaching their usual sub- ject? And, why don’t some schools allow parents to coach the school’s athletic teams so the kids don’t miss out? I always thought the teach- ers were in the classroom, (and outside of it), for the kids. I thought that is why you aspire to become a teacher. The work-to-rule campaign surely shows teachers are not here for the kids. They are here in Durham Region for them- selves. I hope they realize the effect their present actions will have on my kids later in their life. I definitely will remember. CC..LL.. The iron bridge The first iron bridge on Kingston Road in Pickering Village spanned Duffins Creek and was completed in 1890. This was a necessary improvement as the wooden bridges would be washed out or severely damaged by the annual spring flooding. Kingston Road was the only land route linking communities between London in the west and Kingston in the east for many years. This bridge withstood the increasing traffic for almost 30 years. Not for all tastes Teachers in favour of different bargaining tactics should be heard The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario is taking a hard-line approach in its current negoti- ations with the Durham District School Board. Much of that approach has been attributed to the Provincial office of ETFO, which is heavily involved in this negotiation and brings, as one veteran negotiator puts it, “a more aggressive attitude to the bargaining table.” In a resolute speech to School Community Council representatives on Feb. 24, DDSB director Craig Burch heaped a share of the blame for difficulties in this round of bargaining squarely on the shoulders of the provin- cial ETFO office, saying this is as much a provincially directed event as it is a locally directed one. With the Province determining how much will be al- lotted for teacher increases each year, and ETFO at- tempting to bring all boards in line with one another, Mr. Burch says he is in favour of provincewide bargain- ing which would put the government on one side of the bargaining table and the provincial union on the other. We agree with Mr. Burch when he says most teachers, principals and directors just want to do what they love to do - teach. Teachers he has talked to are very un- comfortable with the current situation at the bargain- ing table, says Mr. Burch, “and so are we.” And so are we. There is an awkwardness when you walk into a public elementary school these days. Oh, things look pretty much normal on the surface, but scratch a little and you’ll find many teachers who are re- luctantly towing the party line, unhappy and embar- rassed about being ordered by their union to cut off much of their contribution to education including coaching, academic help, report cards, education plans for high-needs students and more. One has only to look at a confrontation that took place at the Feb. 19 strike registration meeting in Os- hawa to know there is trouble brewing within union ranks. At that meeting a teacher, questioning the hard- line talk, was confronted by provincial members after which she walked out of the meeting followed by some fellow teachers. There are indeed teachers within the Durham union who agree with the tough approach and what is in fact a legal strike action, but many do not. And it is those whose philosophy about teaching differs from the hard- liners who are caught between a rock and a hard place. Follow the work-to-rule directives from ETFO and choose to abandon much of your own work ethic, or dis- regard the rules and face union-imposed fines and the wrath of disapproving peers. Some would say teachers who silently follow a path they disagree with are being untrue to the very lessons they teach their students - lessons about never bowing to peer pressure, about standing up for yourself even in the face of adversity. Others would say ETFO’s strength lies in its solidari- ty and when teachers begin to break ranks it weakens their bargaining power. There is truth in both statements, but they are the black and white of it all. We believe the answer lies in the grey. Yes, unions have a long and important history in this country –– one that can not be easily dismissed. But equally true is the teaching profession has a histo- ry of going the extra mile, of holding itself to high stan- dards and of being a large part of the moral compass we instil in our children. As such, the public expects teach- ers to walk the walk when it comes to fighting peer pres- sure and standing up for themselves. We applaud those teachers who have done their best to maintain as many services for our students as possi- ble. We have a verbal standing ovation for the teacher who spoke her conscience at the Feb. 19 meeting. And we urge other teachers to speak up if they disagree with the way negotiations are being handled. Not to sabo- tage ETFO, not to upend negotiations, and not to give the Durham District School Board an edge, but to make sure all voices are heard and listened to. The seventh-seeded Trojans will open the 18-team Ontario Federa- tion of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) ‘AAAA’ Basketball Cham- pionship in Hamilton today (Wednesday), playing the 13th- ranked Hillcrest school Hawks from Ottawa in the opening game. The Ajax-based Trojans earned their way to the provincials with an impressive 88-62 victory in the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) final over the defending champion Monarchs, of Pickering, played at a jam-packed Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Ajax. Pickering High shot the lights out in the contest, knocking down the three-point field goal with abandon. The Monarchs were mostly power- less to stop the onslaught. The shooting clinic was led by Trojans’ point guard Jason Jordan and for- ward Navin Singh, both tossing up six treys apiece, with Jordan’s com- ing mostly in the first half, and Singh taking over after the interval. Jo rdan finished with a solid 24 points, while Singh was next in line with 20 to lead the Trojans. Pickering High head coach Ron Parfitt notes his club played text- book Trojan basketball, namely moving the ball with authority in the offensive zone, looking for the open man. “We did what we do,” says Parfitt. “We moved the ball well and made the extra pass to get the shot that we wanted. We played a very good game. We were pretty good on de- fence. Everything went right for us tonight. They played hard too, but when (David) Ferdinand went out (early in the fourth quarter), that was the end of their offensive threat.” Parfitt gave kudos to his floor leader, Jordan, who not only distrib- uted the ball effectively to his team- mates, but his three-point daggers in the second quarter kept the Mon- archs from mounting any sort of se- rious run at the Trojans. “J ason took charge when we got f lustered. He got everybody under control and made the shots. Jason has played well. I think he has played better than anyone in LOSSA this year.” The Monarchs kept it close through the opening quarter, trail- ing by seven (18-11) at the end of the opening eight minutes of play. Early in the second quarter, a three point- er by Jordan put the Trojans up by 12 , but the Monarchs proceeded to go on a 6-0 run to wrestle the deficit down to eight points by the middle of the stanza. However, Jordan an- swered with his third three-pointer of the quarter to put the Trojans up by 11. Pickering High would end the quarter with an 11-point advantage (38-27). The third quarter was all Trojans, who went on an impressive 11-2 run in the frame to carve out an em- phatic 21-point lead (58-37) with two minutes remaining. Pickering High outscored the Monarchs 23-13 in the frame for a 20-point lead (61-41). With the Trojans’ lead at 27 points with just more than three minutes left in the game, both teams emp- tied their benches. Ferdinand led St. Mary with 24 points, followed by Sydney Bookal with 13. NNOOTTEESS::Pickering High also emerged as champions in the LOSSA junior ‘AAAA’ basketball f inal, defeating the Dunbarton High School Spartans of Pickering 78-60, also played at Notre Dame Friday night. Steve Lopez led the charge for the Felicien defends Big Ten hurdles crown PPEERRDDIITTAA FFEELLIICCIIEENN Big Ten 60m hurdles champion PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ——A Pickering Olympian has done it again at the 2003 Big Ten Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships at Indiana Universi- ty in Bloomington, Indiana. For the second consecutive year, Perdita Felicien — representing the Uni- versity of Illinois Fighting Illini — cap- tured the 60-metre hurdles crown, suc- cessfully defending her 2002 title last Sunday in a time of 8.02 seconds. What’s more, she did it over her main conference rival, Danielle Car- ruthers, who was running on her home track for the Indiana University Hoosiers. Illinois women’s track and field head coach Gary Winckler told the universi- ty’s Web site that although Felicien faced an uphill battle to retain her hur- dles title, she did so in impressive fash- ion. “I really thought Perdita would have a tough one being on Danielle’s home track, but she took control of the race and never looked back,” Winckler said. “It was classical Perdita Felicien. As far as I could tell, she never really felt pres- sured during the race; it didn’t seem like the race was as close as the times would indicate.” Felicien also competed in the 60 metres and finished seventh in 7.51 sec- onds. Next up for Felicien is the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Indoor Championships at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Arkansas March 14 and 15. She had previously qualified for the NCAA national show- case and has to be considered one of the favourites for the national 60m hur- dles crown. Local trampolinists head to nationals DDUURRHHAAMM —— Four area trampolin- ists bounced their way into the provin- cials and the Canadian championships after solid efforts at the third Ontario Cup qualifying meet in Ottawa last weekend. Amanda Paterson, 18, Charlotte Snape, 15, and Alan Morin, 20, all of Pickering, and Cory Kozmik, 15, of Ajax, not only qualified to compete for the Provincial medals at the Ontario cham- pionships April 5 and 6, but also have met the required scores to compete in the Canadian Trampoline and Tumbling Championships in Saskatoon May 15 to 17. Paterson earned a gold medal in the women’s individual junior national di- vision at the qualifier in Ottawa. Meanwhile, Snape brought home a gold in the women’s synchronized novice national division with partner Kayla Gray, 14, of Uxbridge. Snape also placed fourth in the individual competi- tion; Gray placed seventh in this catego- ry. Kozmik scored two bronze medals in the women’s youth national division in both individual and synchronized cate- gory with partner Daniella Jumelet, 15, of Scarborough. Cory has now qualified to compete in the upcoming Canada World Cup in Oakville April 4 and 5 to try for a spot on the Canadian youth team that will compete internationally. Morin placed fourth in the individual men’s senior national division. All four athletes train in Richmond Hill at Skyriders Trampoline Place, Na- tional Training Facility with coaches Dave Ross and Angelo Despotas. AAJJAAXX ——The Pickering High School Tr ojans senior boys’ basketball team will be one of the top seeds at the provincial high school championships that start in Hamilton today (Wednesday). The Trojans — fresh from a big 88- 62 victory over the St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Monarchs in the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) championship game Friday — will be the number-seven seed at the On- tario Federation of School Athletics Asso- ciations (OFSAA) ‘AAAA’ championships. The Trojans (37-5) will play the 13th- seeded Hillcrest Hawks (49-11) from Ot- tawa in their first-round contest at Hamil- ton’s Cathedral school at 7:15 p.m. A win there will set up a date with the loser of the game between the 10th- ranked Father Goetz Gators from Missis- sauga or ninth-seeded Beal from London at Hamilton’s St. Mary’s school Thursday at 11:15 a.m. Tr ojans’ coach Ron Parfitt says how his team does at OFSAA will depend on the match-ups on the court in any given game. He notes a team with a solid inside presence could give his smaller Trojans fits. He is, however, confident in his team’s ability to shoot the ball for a high percentage. “We know we can shoot with any- body,” says Parfitt. Eighteen teams from across Ontario will compete at the provincial high school basketball championships, culminating in Friday’s gold-medal final at Hamilton’s Cathedral high school at 8 p.m. The odds-on favourite to take the gold medal at this year’s championships is the Eastern Commerce High School Saints from Toronto — the number-one seed in the tournament. A conviction for even a minor offence can stay on your insurance record for up to six years, and on your driving record for three years. Upon reviewing your driving record an insurance company can see you as a high risk and raise your rates! As well many Traffic Tickets carry a hidden penalty called DEMERIT POINTS. Two to Three tickets with demerit points can mean a Licence Suspension, which besides the loss of driving privileges could put your insurance rates into the thousands of dollars! Most people never expect to receive a traffic ticket. When they do they often don’t know what the proper course of action is. Some people never seek the free advice and consultation that the Traffic Ticket People offer. The proper thing to do is call Chris Conway at the Traffic Ticket People at 905-424-XOPP. Chris made a career out of writing Traffic Tickets for 27 years as a Police Officer for the Toronto Police Service, and with the Ontario Provincial Police. As a former Traffic Cop, Breathalyzer Technician, and Detective, Chris’s experience with the Ontario Traffic laws has helped him successfully represent hundreds of people with Traffic problems and Criminal charges. Lanns plays the field with Susquehanna PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ——A Pickering baseball product helped a Pennsylvania college open its 2003 season with a split of games on the weekend. Gerohn Lanns of Pick- ering, a junior outfielder with the Susquehanna University Crusaders men’s baseball team, sparked the team’s of- fence in a 16-9 victory over Pitt-Greensburg Sunday during the team’s spring break trip to Fort Pierce, Florida. Lanns paced the team with four runs and fin- ished 2-for-4 at the plate for the Crusaders. In another game played on Sunday, Susquehanna dropped a 5-2 decision to the Loras Duhawks. Last season, Lanns posted a .270 batting average with 27 hits, 18 runs and 12 RBI in 31 games with the Crusaders. Susquehanna University, of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, will continue its southern spring break tour with ball games until Thurs- day.
