Last July, Pickering Councillor Mark Holland asked council to con- sider a $4.5-million donation. That day council approved $7.5 million for the new regional cancer centre to be located next to Lakeridge Health Oshawa. His request was referred to the finance department for a report to consider the question of capital health care contributions. Coun. Holland says he hopes that report will be available to the committee next Wednesday, Jan. 22 when Gord Simmonds, chairman of the Vital Links Campaign for the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital, makes a presentation to the finance committee. Katie Cronin-Wood, spokesman for the hospital, points out Mr. Sim- monds will be asking for $1 million less than Coun. Holland’s original motion. “We’re asking for a quarter of the 30 per cent we are responsible for,” says Ms. Cronin-Wood. The hospital must raise $13.7 million of the total $46.9 for the hospital ex- pansion. The project will include a new ambulatory care centre, ex- panded emergency room, expanded diagnostic imaging room, more mental health services, a new com- plex care unit and will fund im- proved technology and infrastruc- ture. “If we determine this is not with- in our jurisdiction, not only do we lose the expansion of the hospital, DURHAM —Volunteers and supporters will be cele- brated at upcoming gala. Durham Regional Police’s forensic identification unit dis- covered the e-mail message crumpled in the garbage while searching the couple’s Pickering home on Beaton Way, several weeks after the 28-year-old woman’s cyanide death. Ganesh Raghunauth, 31, is on trial for first-degree murder of his wife, who was pregnant with their second child when she died on May 14, 2000. Prosecutors are alleging he drugged Mrs. Raghunauth, 28, with sedatives before fatally poisoning her with cyanide. “Hello me (sic) dearest beloved husband Ganesh,” began the April 25, 2000 e-mail, read to the jury by Durham Sergeant John Van Seters on Fri- day. “I used to be your No. 1, now maybe I have no number... No matter what you do and say you will always be my No. 1,” Mrs. Raghunauth said in the message. “As I said, whatever is done is done, from now onwards I have nothing to say to you about the past. Maybe you were short of certain things and you found it somewhere else, but I hope to God you don’t pick up any dis- ease. I am praying for that not to happen to you of all people,” the e-mail continued. She professed her devotion despite her husband’s transgres- sions. “I am forcing myself to think positively about you. Gan, I have no eyes anywhere else, and that is the commitment I will treasure,” she said. “We can move on positively if you can correct yourself and be a man to sit down and talk to me... “We really need to talk about everything that has happen (sic).” On the day his wife died, Mr. Raghunauth called 911 and said he found her unconscious on the bathroom floor, after buying her a Mother’s Day gift. Samples taken during an au- topsy revealed 64 times the lethal level of cyanide in her blood, and massive amounts of the sleeping drug Temazepam. Court has heard three weeks before his wife’s death Mr. Raghunauth was engaged to In- dira Seonarain, a New York woman with whom he had been having an affair. Among more than 100 ex- hibits filed by the Crown was a ribbon found in the house during the police search engraved, “Ganesh and Indira, engaged April 22, 2000.” In a series of photographs shown to jurors, Mr. Raghu- nauth and Ms. Seonarain are seen smiling, embracing and posing in Niagara Falls in front of various tourist sites. The pictures were taken May 28, 2000, two weeks after Mrs. Raghunauth’s death. The trial was told family pic- tures of Mr. and Mrs. Raghu- nauth and their 15-month-old son were found hidden under beds and couches and other areas of the house. Meanwhile, pictures of Mr. Raghunauth and Mrs. Seonarain together were discovered openly displayed around the home dur- ing the search a few weeks after Mrs. Raghunauth died. A day planner and address book be- longing to Ms. Seonarain was also found. Birthday and other cards from Mrs. Raghunauth to Mr. Raghunauth, along with other sentimental family mementos, were found in the trash. The trial, before Justice Robert Scott, continues Monday Jan. 27. Learn more about learning disabilities DURHAM —Show your support for Learning Disabilities Awareness Month. Bail granted to Ajax man charged with luring teen BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer DURHAM ––A Catholic high school teacher charged with sexually exploiting and luring a female student over the Internet is free on $3,000 bail. Sherif Ashamalla, 29, of Lake Driveway West in Ajax, was re- leased Friday by Justice of the Peace Linda Kay after a hearing in Ontario Court of Justice, Os- hawa. The Grade 10 English teacher at Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic School, Oshawa, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly trying to arrange a sexual en- counter with the 15-year-old stu- dent during conversations in an Internet chat room. The Durham Catholic District School Board has suspended Mr. Ashamalla from classroom du- ties. Durham Regional Police said its Sexual Assault Unit launched the investigation after the girl’s parents reported the on-line ex- changes, which allegedly “turned sexual in nature,” said Sergeant Paul Malik. “Arrange- ments to meet outside of school were being discussed” between the student and teacher, said the police spokesman. After two nights in custody, Mr. Ashamalla sat slumped in the prisoner’s box during the court appearance. A publication ban was placed on evidence. While the hearing took place Friday, detectives continued their investigation, searching the ac- cused’s apartment for evidence in the case. Earlier in the week, police said, the girl’s computer was removed from the family home and downloaded as evi- dence. It’s the first time Durham police have laid an Internet-child luring charge. The charge, which applies to a child under 16, falls under a new section of the Criminal Code making it a crime for adults to communicate with a young person through the com- puter, with an intent to initiate sexual contact. Mr. Ashamalla has been teaching at Paul Dwyer for the past five years, and previously taught Family Studies. The girl was not a student in his class. As conditions of his bail, Mr. Ashamalla must not communicate with any female students at Paul Dwyer, or any females at all under the age of 18. Under his terms he must stay away from the Stevenson Road North high school, is barred from using the comput- er to access the Internet and cannot enter his apartment until the police investiga- tion has concluded. Mr. Ashamalla is back in court Feb. 3. Number 7 has legal non- conforming status, having been in existence since 1952, predating the City’s zoning bylaws. But Barry Kaufman, who purchased the property in 1989, is trying to rezone the property to formally rec- ognize a number of improve- ments he made to the busi- ness in 1999. At that time, Pickering’s committee of adjustment ap- proved the construction of a new indoor parts and engine storage facility and disman- tling bay. But the property’s legal non-conforming status meant the new building had to be built as an extension of an old structure on site and connected with a ‘breeze- way’. Mr. Kaufman now wants to demolish the old building, which he says was built in the 1960s, is “rat-infested” and hasn’t been used by the business in over a year. How- ever, to do that, the property has to be rezoned. Planning director Neil Carroll said Monday night, if approved, the rezoning appli- cation will have a holding provision, which won’t be lifted until he completes cer- tain provisions like con- structing a two-metre fence to the north and south of the property. But that didn’t satisfy neighbours who said they didn’t feel their concerns had been addressed by the rezon- ing. John Murphy, who lives on Concession 5, said he is still concerned for his drink- ing water and those of 35 es- tate homes slated for con- struction across from the auto recyclers in the future. “I think it’s short-sighted to take a legal non-conform- ing entity and legalize it,” he said. Mayor Wayne Arthurs warned the owner would have every right to take the issue to the Ontario Munici- pal Board if the rezoning failed. In an interview after- wards, Mr. Kaufman said a lot of the new fencing and as- phalt work relies on the de- molition of the old building. Without the rezoning, most of that work can’t be done, he said. “People here think by giving me legal status I’m going to expand this place tremendously,” Mr. Kaufman added. “But they don’t know what’s happening here. They don’t have a clue.” Number 7 aims to protect the environment by recycling everything from gas and an- tifreeze to windshield washer fluid and mercury switches, he said. “This is my own property. I don’t rent it,” Mr. Kaufman added. JOHNSON from page 1 P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, January 19, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Canada must stick to peacekeeping role To the editor: Canadians are deeply disturbed to know our government has finally caved in to pres- sures from the United States. After meeting with U.S. Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld on the issue of a United Nations mandate to participate in a war with Iraq, our Defence Minister John McCallum de- clares: “ We’re saying we much prefer that, but we may do it otherwise.” A blithe flip- flop of the Liberal government. Earlier, Prime Minister Jean Chretien as- sured his countrymen that evidence of Iraq’s possession of and intent to use biological, chemical or nuclear weapons must be clear before a prudent international intervention can be shaped and carried out through the UN. Although the UN inspectors came back with a ‘no smoking gun’ verdict, the U.S. continues to take a belligerent position. Now the threat from North Korea and a Third World War scenario is scary indeed. But what is the real reason North Korea isn’t a high priority? It’s the oil. Also, the U.S. has already committed so many diplomatic and military resources to an attack on Iraq that it’s virtually impossible to back down and focus on North Korea. Some analysts believe a perceived North Korean threat is necessary to justify build- ing the theatre missile defence system, in- tended to counter China’s growing military and political power. All the while Washington is pursuing an incoherent foreign policy by mobilizing massive forces against a weakened secular dictator 6,000 miles away who doesn’t seem to have had anything to do with a series of devastating terrorist attacks. Instead of blindly following the U.S., Canada must not abandon its peacekeeping role for which it is known the world over. Editorial &OPINIONS PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER JANUARY 19, 2003 Here’s what will happen in 2003: Over the vociferous objections of a minority of Durham council- lors, a new headquarters will be ap- proved next to the existing one in Whitby. Those opposed, primarily from Oshawa, will disingenuously claim it’s a waste of taxpayers’ money, when their real concern is a tenant moving out of a downtown office building. Where’s the concern for taxpay- er dough when considering the mil- lions spent on leasing space for more than 30 years in south Whitby for the works department? The Re- gion could have constructed a building for works at a considerable cost savings. Over the vociferous objections of Whitby councillors, a new court- house will be built in downtown Oshawa. The Province has been promising for years to build the courthouse in the downtown and this year it will go ahead. After all, this could be a provincial election year and a courthouse is a good sop to voters. It will be an election year munic- ipally, so I’m hoping for a real mayor’s race in Ajax. It’s doubtful it will happen, given the over- whelming odds faced when taking on an incumbent, but it would be nice to see an honest-to-goodness battle. It certainly would be more exciting than the 2000 race, when the guy challenging the mayor al- most didn’t even know he was run- ning and that’s not a joke. Actually, it would be enjoyable to see a contest for all municipal positions. Maybe voters would pay more attention and they’d be more inclined to head out Nov. 10 to mark a ballot. One would think that tax in- creases of three, four, five or six per cent would get people to sit up, turn off the TV and take notice. Ajax councillor Scott Crawford, who is now a grandfather (another sign of the apocalypse), will run in an election under the banner of the Mullet Party. Michigan politicians will rise up and ban Canadian garbage. Durham will look for a landfill site, say no trash will be imported and then cast an eye towards Pickering, which just so happens to be the nearest community to Toronto. So, some- one will say, ‘what the heck, let’s give Mel a going away present’ and try to open a dump here. As this is column is based solely on the facts emanating from my crystal ball, it looks like a World Series win for the Boston Red Sox, I’ll get a whopping huge pay raise, win the lottery and my cats will ac- tually pay attention to what I say. (It could happen.) Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com On new construction, municipal elections and landfill... It’s a story with which residents in nearly every municipality across Ontario can relate. A developer makes a proposal to local council to build a housing or commercial project on land zoned, in the council’s Official Plan, for another purpose. The project is opposed by nearby homeowners who come to council to argue against it. When it comes time for a final decision, council votes against the development. However, the developer doesn’t take ‘No’for an answer, even if it is from a democratically elected body backed up by an Of- ficial Plan that must be approved by the Province’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs. The council decision is appealed by the aforesaid spurned developer to the Ontario Municipal Board, a non-elected arm’s-length body with the final authority to over- turn local planning decisions. The council decision is overturned by the OMB, much to the chagrin of local politicians and the homeowners who opposed the project in the first place. A trip to the OMB costs everybody involved loads of time and money and is usually a recipe for frustration. The GTA Task Force on Ontario Municipal Board Reforms, initiated by Durham Region and including Chairman Roger Anderson as well as such experienced political hands as former Toronto mayor John Sewell, is now looking very closely at the role of the OMB. The concerns raised before the task force largely centre on the role and authority of municipal and regional councils as well as the purpose and use of the Official Plan. Why go through the time, effort and expense of preparing Official Plans when an OMB commissioner can ignore them and also ignore the will of council, the direct representatives of the taxpayers? Who should ultimately decide what gets built and where in a community? Should the final decision be made by the local and regional politicians and the staff and planners who work for them or by a so-called arm’s-length body of appointees (the OMB)? The goal of the task force is to look at the entire system, take a look at the way planning bodies work in other provinces, and hear from a wide array of interested parties from homebuilders’ associations to developers to citizens’ groups to municipal and regional politicians. Ultimately, the task force must decide if the current system works best or if a better, more efficient, less costly system is available to settle planning disputes. While it wouldn’t make sense, as Mr. Anderson indicates, to dump the entire OMB process, there’s nothing wrong with making changes to improve the system for everyone. Municipal board reform merits review While scrapping group altogether makes no sense, changes must be made Keith Gilligan Staff Writer kgilligan@durhamregion.com www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, January 19, 2003 PAGE 7 A/P PAY IN 12 EQUAL PAYMENTS INTEREST FREE!* *See Sears Travel for complete details, terms and conditions. Peopled with costumed, role-playing volunteers from all over Durham Region, this living museum offers visitors an intimate glimpse into the lives of Eu- ropean settlers in this area. With more than a dozen buildings on the site, the village welcomes visitors and students from June to September, with season- al events at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Explore such early buildings as an 1830s barn, the Collins house from the Chalk Lake area, circa 1845, the 1850s Brougham Cen- tral Hotel (originally located just miles away), the Duffin’s Creek General Store (1855) and the blacksmith shop, built in 1856 and the only village building origi- nally located in Greenwood. The black- smith shop contains many tools original to the smithy. Visitors can watch as volun- teers carry out the everyday duties of early settlers, in- cluding blacksmithing, gardening, cooking, fence- building, rope-making and more. The village offers tours for students, allowing them to take part in build- ing fences, sawing logs, making candles and ropes, blacksmithing, playing games, rug-weaving and bak- ing. Programs are adaptable to suit pre-schoolers and adults. Individuals and groups are welcomed, although group visits required advance bookings. There is a gift shop, a picnic area and plenty of free parking. Most buildings are wheelchair accessible. Admission is $4 for adults, $2.50 for children. Pickering Museum Village is located three kilome- tres east of Brock Road on Hwy. 7, west of Westney Road in Greenwood. The village is open weekends during June and September, and Wednesdays to Sun- days during July and August. The hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information, call 905-683-8401, send an e-mail to museum@city.pickering.on.ca or visit the to Pick- ering Museum Village Web site, www.cityofpicker- ing.com/standard/lifestyle/museum. Curves provides a thirty minute total workout and weight loss counseling in the same place. “The reason Curves franchises grows so rapidly is because Curves is a unique concept in the exercise industry,” says owner and manager Joanna Lopez. “The facility is built around a breakthrough in exercise with the use of the Curves workout system. It’s a complete workout in just half an hour.” The Curves workout is a system of exercise that alternates hydraulic resistance machines with aerobic recovery stations. As you move around a circuit, enjoying the music, you perform both a cardio and strength training workout at the same time. “The thirty minute total workout burns as much as 500 calories,” says Joanna. “Because you’re moving fluid rather than weights, its safe for any age or condition. Weight loss is the main reason women join our facility,” says Joanna. “But along with weight loss are health reasons such as osteoporosis, arthritis and diabetes; more energy; decrease stress and firm up. Members are successful in reaching their fitness goals for the first time because the workout is quick and fun, the atmosphere is not intimidating, and monthly consultations monitor and motivate. We also run challenges and exciting promotions that encourage members to come three times a week, the best frequency for the best results.” The testimonials given by the facility’s members are an indication of the facility’s success. The answer seems to be yes. People who are optimistic are more likely to overcome pain and adversity when recovering from an illness. They are also more likely to stay healthy. Your body responds to your thoughts, emotions and actions. There are three strategies you can use to recover from an illness and stay healthy. First try to change your expectations from negative to positive. Here are some suggestions: • Stop negative self talk. Make only positive statements. • Send yourself affirmations. An affirmation is a phrase or sentence that sends a strong positive statement to you about you. • Visualize health and healing. • Don’t feel guilty. Sometimes an illness may develop and persist no matter what. Do the best you can. Just about anything that makes you feel good about yourself helps you recover and stay healthy: • Friendship. Close social ties help you recover faster from illnesses and reduce your risk of developing diseases from arthritis to depression. • Volunteering. Helping others helps you help yourself. People who volunteer enjoy life more than those who don’t. • Petting an animal. When you stroke a pet, your blood pressure goes down. • Spirituality. If you believe in a higher power, ask for support while you are recovering. Prayer, faith and spiritual beliefs can play an important role in recovering from an illness and staying healthy. Believe it or not there have been studies that show laughter does many things: • It can strengthen the immune system, possibly increasing antibodies and disease-fighting cells. • It increases endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller, thus increasing pain tolerance. • It gives you a mini workout by increasing your heart and respiration rates, as well as blood pressure. Experts say a hearty one minute laugh is equal to approximately 10 minutes on a rowing machine. • It works certain facial and abdominal muscles. This is especially useful for people who have neuralgia or rheumatism. • It helps people with certain kinds of respiratory illnesses by increasing their ventilation and clearing mucus. • It reduces the incidence of arterial blockage, angioplasties and heart attacks. It is said that children laugh approximately 400 times a day, while adults laugh 15 times. The older we get the more responsibilities we have and thus the more stress. Things that were funny then don’t seem that way now. But it’s OK to laugh. A good belly laugh will work the abdominal muscles, massage your internal organs, improve the blood supply to the intestines and help the bowels move properly. So next time you are feeling stressed, try something positive, like an old-fashioned belly laugh. But when one leg is longer than the other, the secondary complications can become quite painful. When the difference is substantial, the effect on gait and posture can be quite disruptive. There are two types of limb-length discrepancies. The first is designated as structural. Here there is an actual difference in the skeletal length of one leg. This could be caused by polio or a hip replacement or leg fracture. The other is known as a function discrepancy. The actual lengths of the legs are the same but a curve in the back or a dropped pelvis may lead the leg length differences. Changes in gait occur as your body tries to shorten the longer leg and lengthen the shorter leg. This can be seen in the foot whereby the foot on the shorter side maintains a higher arch and the patient will bear weight on the outside of the foot. This foot can be a shoe size smaller than the other because of the higher arch. The foot on the longer leg will lose some of it’s arch and weight will be borne along the arch or big toe side of the foot. This foot, because of the fallen arch can be a size longer. The foot on the shorter leg can be prone to stress fractures as the foot is more rigid while the leg on the longer side may be prone to knee strains due to internal rotation of the leg. The most common change in posture due to a limb-length discrepancy is scoliosis, a curve in the back. As a result of the scoliosis, the patient’s pelvis will be tilted down to the shorter leg side; the head and shoulder will be tilted down on the longer leg side and even the level of the fingers when standing erect will be lower on the long side. Even the skinfolds of the gluteal muscles (bum) will be uneven. All this occurs so that the body compensates for the unevenness in the length of the legs, and the patient may not even walk with a limp. The measurement of the length of legs is not very accurate. When I do so in my office, I use two different methods and look for a raw difference as I measure from the belly button to the inside ankle and also from the top of the hip bone to the inside ankle. Treatment involves lifts and/or orthotics. Purely structural deformities require a lift for the shorter leg. Functional deformities are best treated with orthotics. Asymmetrical problems should not be treated lightly. They are one of the leading causes of back problems and the third most common cause of running injuries. If you have any questions or would like a topic addressed, mail it to ASK THE PODIATRIST C/O THE NEWS ADVERTISER. Bing Crosby once crooned, “You’ve got to accen-tchu-ate the positive/E-lim-in-ate the negative/Latch on to the affirmative.” They were simple words intended to muffle the doom-and-gloom regularly heard by a war-weary public in the 1940s. Today, those same words can apply to people seeking lifestyle changes, whether it’s to quit smoking, lose weight or reduce stress. For those who’ve tried to break free of their bad habits and failed, one company offers a unique solution: hypnosis. Rudy Fedorowich, director of the Ajax branch of Positive Changes Hypnosis, says his service is often not his clients’ f irst choice. “There are people who want a quick fix but there are also those really desperate to change their lifestyle so they can enjoy their families and have good health for the long term. Our high success rate often makes us the last choice.” Positive Changes Hypnosis was founded in the United States in 1987. It has since branched out to over one hundred centers across North America, including 19 in Canada. One is located in Durham on Westney Raod in Ajax. Though hypnosis has been around for centuries, it’s often been misunderstood. Popular entertainment has given the impression that it’s some kind of mind-controlling device designed to make people do crazy things. But Fedorowich refutes that idea. “When people come to our center, they have to want to change,” he says. “Basically, we’re guides. We show people how to change but we can’t make people do what they don’t want to do.” A free initial consultation helps determine whether or not hypnosis wo uld benefit a potential client. If so, a suitable programme is implemented. “In the hypnosis session,” Fedorowich says, “you go into a completely relaxed state. It’s like your body goes to sleep but your mind stays fully awake. We talk to the subconscious mind to help structurally change your habits.” He says anyone with an IQ over 60 and who is free of severe mental disorders can be hypnotized, though it may take some people more time than others. A special light and sound machine is often used to slow brain waves and relax people in order to tap into the subconscious more quickly. Sessions are recorded so clients can review at home and program their minds to develop good, long- term habits. Fedorowich adds hypnosis is completely safe and effective. “It works for most people. They come out of our sessions with great satisfaction, having lost weight or quit smoking, and happily recommend us. They are able to sleep better at night, have a sharper memory and develop higher self- esteem.” If you want to make good on that New Year’s resolution, visit Positive Changes Hypnosis today. In Ajax, the branch is located at 725 Westney Road South, Unit 7. Call (905) 686-7717 for more information. Labelling, The Easy Solution “Hyperactive”, “Slow”, “ADD”, “ADHD”,”LD”, “Dyslexic”, the lists goes on and on. Educators have labels for everything. Although we have become comfortable with the growing use of labels, has anyone ever considered the consequences of a label? Will being labelled lead to enhanced academic performance, or will a labelled student simply behave in the manner that they feel others expect of them based on the label? I believe in the idea of a self fulf illing prophecy. I believe that students will live up to, or down to, any expectations we place on them. So raise the bar. If we label a student in such a way that the expectations on them are lower, then that is the exact result we can expect. So raise the bar. In my opinion, labelling a student serves no positive pur pose, it is simply the easy solution. Labelling allows those responsible for the positive development of a student to feel that they are off the hook, because, after all, the student’s problem has been identified, the label tells us so. Have y ou ever considered the long term consequences of a label? Many adult males still believe they could never learn to spell because they were labelled. Likewise, many adult females believe they could never do math because of a label. So what about today’s students? Where will they be as adults as a result of the overwhelming abundance of labels they have received as children? The new motto for parents and educators should be, “Think long and hard before you label a child”. Before labelling a student, make sure that all possible options are researched. Here are some areas that you should consider before placing a label on any student: 1.) Have their eyes checked. 2.) Have their hearing checked. 3.) Check for nutritional deficiencies. 4.) Check for allergies, both food and other. 5.) Monitor their sleep patterns. 6.) Check for stress or trauma. 7.) Check for personality clashes with the teacher. 8.) Check for dominant learning preferences. 9.) Check for major emotional stresses like divorce, move, etc. 10.) Check the learning environment at school and at home. Any of the above possibilities could lead to challenges with learning. Challenges that can be manageably overcome without all the negative consequences of a label. You have a responsibility to the student to do your research before drawing any conclusions, and def initely before placing any labels. After all, as an educator, you would expect your students to do their research before drawing any conclusions in any assignment they submitted to you, so why should it be okay for adults to draw conclusions based on insufficient research? One final thought. Maybe educators who insist on placing labels on students should consider that they themselves may be suffering from a serious form of “Labelitice”. I wonder what the long term implications could be for someone suffering from “Labelitice”. I wonder if educators suffering from “Labelitice” should be separated from their friends, publicly identified, and sent to a specialist? Do you think that would help them long term? Austin’s Shane Bonner fails to slip one past Pickering High School during recent high school hockey action at the Ajax Community Centre. The hometown squad pulled off an improbable win in this game with only a handful of players. Goalie Aaron Spink was masterful in the cage, as illustrated in this effort. Offence goes missing in women’s basketball action Return to the court a low-key affair after holiday break AJAX —With teams returning to the court fol- lowing the Christmas break, the games were pre- dictably low scoring in Ajax Ladies’ Basketball League action last Wednes- day night. In the opening game of the evening between East Side Mario’s and the Bank of Montreal, both sides worked hard to find scor- ing opportunities but were off the mark with some rusty shooting. With the bankers missing several key players, Mario’s chalked up a 27-16 victory. Erinn Lynch netted 10 points for East Side; Sue Nowry and Portia Vidal each sunk six for the bankers. In the second game, Se- lect Food Products faced second-place Donlands Jewellers. Select jumped out in front from the tip and powered its way to a commanding lead. Al- though Donlands fought back, Select’s determined play resulted in a 49-31 victory. Lori Lomberg posted a game-high 20 points for Select. Lana Letourneau replied with six for Don- lands. Historic effort leads soccer girls to championship win Local team first from Canada to win Florida event PICKERING —A Picker- ing Soccer Club (PSC) under- 19 girls’ ‘Academy Team’ made history over the holiday. The Pickering entry was the first team from Canada to win any division or age group at the Orange Classic Girls Showcase Tournament in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The tournament ran Dec. 27 to 30. The team was put together by PSC coach Manny White and made up of under-16, under-17 and under-18 girls from Ontario Youth Soccer League teams. The purpose of the acade- my program is to help players who are interested in a soccer scholarship and provide them with playing opportunities. More than 281 university scouts were reported to be in attendance at the tournament. In the final, Pickering best- ed the TOWSC Thunder from New York 2-1 in double over- time. The championship game was played only 90 minutes after Pickering won its semifi- nal match. The Academy Team mount- ed strong pressure in looking for the opening goal, but the Thunder played a strong de- fensive game, limiting scoring chances, while their goalkeep- er made several good saves on shots from outside the box. The first half ended in a score- less tie. Six minutes into the second half, the Thunder went up 1-0 on a breakaway. Looking for the equalizer, Pickering was rewarded with a goal by Erin Gilson on a low hard cross from Candice Cunningham in the 80th minute. Five minutes remained in the second extra frame when Dana Szeghalmi put a cross in from the right wing and Cort- ney Stewart was on the spot for the winner. Andi Sadowski was named the tournament’s most valu- able player. For the second year in a row the top goal scor- er was Gilson with six. In the semifinal, the Acade- my Team played Miami Pre- mier of Florida, scoring a 7-1 victory. Miami tested Pickering in the opening half, but a stellar defensive effort foiled Miami’s efforts and the Acad- emy Team built a 4-0 lead in the first 45 minutes of play. In the second half the Academy squad scored three more goals, but conceded their first goal against in the dying minutes. Gilson scored four goals, with singles to Szeghalmi, Cun- ningham and Christina Balint. In preliminary games, the Academy Team was a perfect 3-0, scoring nine goals while not surrendering one. Aurelea Gumiela earned three shutouts, with the help of a strong defence. Pickering opened under-19 Green Division play with a 4-0 win over Norcross Majic Gold of Georgia. Gilson, Balint, Sarah Reid and Szeghalmi scored. In Game 2, Academy blanked the Genessis Soccer Club of Texas 2-0. Cunning- ham and Andrea Dale scored. Academy ended prelimi- nary play with a 3-0 win over the Kendell Storm of Florida. Balint scored twice, with Szeghalmi adding a single. Other team members are Jennifer Peios, Jacqueline White, Lindsey Murphy, Julia Callaghan, Stephanie Williams, Alexandra Moraca, Tenaj Patterson, and Codi Tredway. PICKERING —The Pickering Panthers major atom ‘AA’ rep hockey team was edged out of the playoff round at the recent Ottawa Bell Canada Cup Tourna- ment. Needing only a tie to ad- vance to the quarter-finals, the Panthers suffered a disap- pointing 2-0 loss in Game 3 to the North York Knights, whose determined and disci- plined play was enough to hold the Panthers off the scoreboard. Pickering opened the 32- team tournament with a 3-2 victory over the London Knights. Trailing 2-1 entering the third period, the Panthers rallied for the come-from-be- hind win. Glenn Murphy, Corrado Gianfriddo and David Mott scored. In Game 2, the Panthers pounced all over the New Hampshire Avalanche 10-2. Gianfriddo scored twice, and Louis Del Re, Mott, Chris Raguseo, David Whorpole, Carter Finlayson, Brian Smith, Charlie Graber and Adam Cranley scored once. Michael Straub, Whorpole, Graber, Del Re, Cranley, Murphy and Gianfriddo each counted two assists. The Panthers also took part in the skills competition that coincided with the tour- nament, including the four- man relay race. The Picker- ing foursome of Straub, Zach Munn, Del Re and Whorpole had the fastest time of all en- trants. The shooting competition showcased the talents of Graber and Murphy, while Raguseo and Mott excelled in the all-star game. Blake Cluff and Daniel Tomei supplied stellar goal- tending throughout the tour- nament. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, January 19, 2003 PAGE 21 P Skate Exchange 980 Brock Rd.
