Ten of 14 beaches tested by the Region of Durham health depart- ment are open following testing during the week of Aug. 6 but both Oshawa Lakeview Park beaches remain closed as does Kinsmen Beach in Port Perry and one Ajax beach in Rotary Park. BY JACQUIE MCINNES Staff Writer DURHAM —Durham Regional Chairman Roger Anderson hopes the representatives of Ontario’s 450- plus municipalities elect him as their new leader when they get together for the annual Association of Mu- nicipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference, next week. “I think I could offer the leadership municipalities are going to need over the next few years to ensure the Province provides a new deal for municipalities; one that’s more fair and equitable than the one we have right now,” said Mr. Anderson. The chair- man has sat on the AMO board of directors for 12 years and has served as vice- president for five of the last six. Mr. Anderson is running against Thunder Bay Mayor Ken Boschoff, said Dino Zuppa, senior policy adviser for AMO. “It’s a very impor- tant position to represent the municipalities of Ontario,” said Mr. Zuppa, who noted AMO successfully lobbied to get a new municipal act passed last year for the first time in 150 years. As well, the president must liase with the Province to bring the municipalities’ concerns to the attention of ministers. “One size does not fit all in this province,” said Mr. Anderson, adding the provincial government needs to ROGER ANDERSON ‘One size does not fit all.’ NO PAY M E N T S NO INTE R E S T For 1 ye a r . The Office Depot and Zellers are partnering a Back to School backpack program, organized by the Ajax-Picker- ing United Way, The Canadian Red Cross Durham Region Branch, and the Child Poverty Task Force. The purpose of the program is to provide children in need with school supplies. It is the third year of the program. “We are thrilled to be able to invest in the children of our community in this way,” says Darrin Sharp, Zellers Os- hawa Centre store manager. Back to School drop-off boxes are located at Zellers in Oshawa, Claring- ton, and the Pickering Town Centre. Items required for the backpacks in- clude: lunch bags, pencils, rulers, high- lighters, calculators, paper, pencil crayons, erasers, binders, pens, duotangs and math sets. “The children are so proud and happy to get the backpacks... they usual- ly use plastic bags and leftover sup- plies,” says Eileen Gerber of the Family and Community Action Program. The number of children in each com- munity who require supplies are: 3,094 in Oshawa,Whitby, and Clarington; 215 in Scugog; 69 in Brock; and 996 for Ajax, Pickering and Uxbridge. More than 80 schools have requested the backpacks this year. In 2001, 12,202 items were donated, providing more than 2,000 children with school supplies in the region. This year, the goal is 4,400 kits. The course will run five evenings between Sept. 17 and Oct. 15, 6:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Topics featured at the work- shops include child co-opera- tion, motivation and effective discipline with love. There is a $50 registration fee per family. Couples, single parents, non-custodial parents and oth- ers caring for children are wel- come. The course is being pre- sented by Elizabeth Pierce, a family counsellor with Catholic Family Services of Durham. Registration must be com- pleted by Sept. 6. The Friendly Visiting Pro- gram involves volunteers who can help relieve the loneliness and feelings of isolation felt by some older resi- dents. Volunteers can share stories, play cards or board games, go for a leisurely stroll or simply drop by for a cof- fee. With the Home Help Pro- gram, people as- sist by doing basic housekeep- ing chores such as laundry, clean- ing floors or dusting. Clients are seniors or those with a physical disability. Those performing the chores re- ceive $10 an hour, with the clients paying the fee directly to the helper. For more information or to volunteer, call 905-686-3331. recognize the unique require- ments of the various regions in the province and must recognize the impacts of the regulations and legislation it creates. “With policing costs, for ex- ample, the Province cannot in- troduce a new standard of ser- vice without the revenue to back it up. Municipalities cannot af- ford to continue to fund those changes,” he said. The same ap- plies for ambulance services, added the chairman, who said when municipalities meet provincial ministers during the Aug. 18 to 21 conference, they need to work out a better deal on ambulance funding. “If the Province wants ambu- lance service to be better (to meet legislated requirements) it has to come to the table as a full partner,” he said. “A partner means 50/50 funding. Seventy- thirty is not a partnership.” Road infrastructure is another important issue Mr. Anderson hopes the Province will come willing to address. “The infrastructure and bridge construction costs are enormous. The Province down- loaded bridges and about 5,200 kilometres of roads in 1998. The money they gave for capital and maintenance has run out. Munic- ipalities will not be able to afford all those roads unless the Province gets back in,” he said. Ajax Ward 3 local Councillor Randy Low will be attending his second AMO conference, having gone to last year’s gathering. “I look forward to hearing the premier. I’m interested in what he has to say, especially the new municipal act,” Coun. Low noted. He also wants to speak to Pre- mier Ernie Eves about the appli- cation submitted by Norm Picov to install slot machines at his racetrack. “I want it to go for- ward.” Coun. Low added, “I want to get to meet the other representa- tives, from other communities, to talk about planning issues.” Pickering Ward 2 Regional Councillor Mark Holland will be attending, but wasn’t available for comment. Mr. Anderson said the minis- ters would be wise to hear what the municipal representatives have to say. “Out of 460 munici- palities in Ontario, maybe 10 aren’t members of AMO. It’s an organization the Province should listen to. I hope the Province will act on some of the advice it has to give. I’d like Durham to be part of that.” P PAGE 4 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 11, 2002 Brock North Dental OPEN EVENINGS & SATURDAY CONTACT US AT 905-427-7773 TAKING APPOINTMENTS IMMEDIATELY • DIGITAL X-RAY • INTRA ORAL CAMERA • TV IN OPERATORIES • KIDS PLAY STATION 2 • DIRECT BILLING TO INSURANCE NOW OPEN!! Pear- son Public School about 4 p.m. when a group of five male youths walked up and grabbed their phones, which were lying on the grass, Durham Regional Police said. The 14-year- old confronted one of the youths, who punched him in the face and pulled out a small silver- coloured hand- gun, holding it to his back. The victim’s friend was punched and pushed by a sec- ond teen in the group, who fled on bicycles to- ward Westney Road. The Canadian Associa- tion of Physicians for the Environment is particularly concerned about the effects of pesticide exposure on children, and calls for abandoning all synthetic pesticide use except in rare, critical situations. The Ontario Public Health Association passed a resolution last year urging mu- nicipalities to restrict the use of chemical pesticides on both public and private lands, and recently the Canadian Public Health Association adopted a resolution regarding the restriction of pesticide use. The Canadian Cancer Society also issued a statement earlier this year regarding its opposition to the cosmetic use of pesti- cides. Judging by the number of people who continue to have their lawns sprayed, the growing consensus among medical profes- sionals that ‘the perfect lawn’ carries too great a cost in terms of health risks, is not widely recognized. Nor perhaps do many know the province of Quebec has legislated a phased-in ban on chemical lawn care for that entire province. Three years from now, no one in Quebec will be spraying on public, private or commercial properties. And Cobalt, Ont., recently became the first Ontario municipality to pass a bylaw forbidding pesticide use on private as well as public property. Clearly, more and more of us are con- vinced going to war on the cancer epidem- ic is much more worthwhile than continu- ing to wage war on dandelions. Editorial &OPINIONS PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER AUGUST 11, 2002 Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Ladies and gentlemen: In this corner, from northwestern On- tario, the mayor of Thunder Bay, Ken ‘the Battler’ Boschoff. And, challenging for the high-powered presidency of the 450- plus strong Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), your two-term chairman of Durham, Roger ‘the Scrapper’ An- derson. Yes, Mr. Anderson, who has won the confidence of council- lors from eight municipalities across Durham in two separate elections now, has decided he wants to take the helm of the pow- erful AMO council. The association, which takes in the concerns of Ontario cities, towns and villages as disparate as Toronto and Temagami, needs a vocal, persuasive leader capable of having influence at the provincial level. With four cabinet voices in five ridings here in Durham in- cluding influential movers-and-shakers like Janet Ecker, Chris Hodgson and Jim Flaherty, Mr. Anderson’s words and actions would have some weight. The Durham chairman has a decent track record of accom- plishment over the past five years. He helped in the effort to bring the University of Ontario Institute of Technology to the re- gion and has campaigned hard to land the International Ther- monuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) for Durham. If Durham, to some extent, can be considered a mini-Ontario with rural municipalities having to share services and resources with their urban cousins, Mr. Anderson has shown an ability to work well with both. That will only intensify should he be se- lected president of AMO. Mr. Anderson, who has sat on the AMO board for the past 12 years (he has been vice-president five of the last six years), ob- viously has the experience. And, he knows what AMO needs to do. “It’s an organization the Province should listen to. I hope the Province will act on some of the advice it has to give,” he said. “With policing costs, the Province cannot introduce a new standard of service without the revenue to back it up... if the Province wants ambulance service to be better, it has to come to the table as a full partner... infrastructure and bridge construction costs are enormous. The money the Province gave for capital and maintenance has run out. Municipalities will not be able to afford all those roads unless the Province gets back in.” As a well-known quantity who is on a first-name basis with some of the most powerful people at the cabinet table, Mr. An- derson is an ideal choice to lead AMO. Delegates to the confer- ence this week should vote for him so municipalities across On- tario can be better represented. Anderson a solid bet to lead AMO Durham chairman has political connections, experience needed for job NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 11, 2002 PAGE 7 A/P My name is Melissa Hayden. I lost 30 pounds with Positive Changes Hypnosis. I went from a size 16 to a size 8 in four short months. I’m at my ideal weight and I feel great! Daily Struggle I struggled with my weight all my life. Up and down, up and down, like a yo-yo. I thought to myself, I am an intelligent woman, why can’t I control something as simple as food? I knew that I was dealing with more than just weight. I had tried the national diet chains. I lost weight, but I was hungry and cranky. I am a former diet ‘leader’. I had a lot of knowledge about weight loss, but it didn’t motivate me. After working so hard to lose 80 pounds, I had gained back 30. Confused? No need to be, said a spokesman for the Uxbridge Con- servation Association, which re- ceived a $57,000 cheque Friday from Ontario Finance Minister Janet Ecker on behalf of the Trilli- um Foundation, during a ceremony in Glen Major Forest. “It was recognized the conser- vation association, having done the Uxbridge portion of the (Trans- Canada) trail, had the expertise and know-how to do it in Pickering and Ajax,” explained Wynn Wal- ters. He noted the councils of Uxbridge,Ajax and Pickering have endorsed the project. Mr. Walters said the trail-build- ing program, to be completed over the next 18 months, will be made up of three phases: • Putting the finishing touches, such as posting signs and drawing up maps, on Uxbridge’s 20-kilo- metre portion of the Trans-Canada trail, which snakes along the east end of the Township; • Selecting the best route for the trail to extend through Ajax and Pickering; and • Negotiating with landowners in Ajax and Pickering and working with local environmental groups to actually build the trail through those communities. Mr. Walters said it is likely the trail will be built primarily along Duffins Creek, as governments and public agencies already own sig- nificant amounts of land in that watershed. Once completed, Uxbridge residents will be able to use the trail to get as far south as the Lake Ontario waterfront. “We’re absolutely delighted,” Mr. Walters said. “It fits in with the concept of Uxbridge being the trail capital of Canada. “And that’s not an exaggeration, because we have the intersection of two major trails of Canada: the Trans-Canada trail and the Oak Ridges Moraine trail.” A/P PAGE 8 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 11, 2002 NE083A102 © 2002. Around 6:15 p.m., a woman getting out of her car in the Pickering Town Centre parking lot was approached by a man who asked her for a cigarette. As she handed over a smoke, the man grabbed her, held a sharp object to her throat and demanded cash. The woman turned over money and a watch, after which the suspect struck her in the face, knocking her to the ground. The man fled the area on a mo- torcycle and was last seen going south. Paramedics treated the woman for cuts and bruises. The suspect is described as white, 20 to 25 years old, six-feet tall, with a medium build, dirty blond hair in a ponytail and tattoos on his left arm. He is clean-shaven with a scar on the left side of his face. He was wearing a white tank top and blue jeans. The mo- torcycle is black with blue trim. A/P PAGE 10 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 11, 2002 Knocking the wind out of dirty air Durham’s smog the result of North American lifestyle This is the eighth in a series of monthly features examining envi- ronmental issues in Durham Re- gion. In this story we look at how smog impacts daily life in Durham Region. BY TIM FORAN Staff Writer DURHAM –It’s another hot, sticky day as you pull your car in to fill up at a local gas station. As you undo the gas cap, you hear a slow hiss and see a wavy translucent gas escaping from the tank. That gas, an example of what is called a volatile organic com- pound, rises up to the sunny sky where it mixes with the nitrogen oxide spewed out by your car’s ex- haust. And then, there the two sit, part of a dirty haze blanketing the area. The haze is smog, a chemical soup made up of dust and other particulates, but mostly ground- level ozone, created when a volatile organic compound and ni- trogen oxide mix in the hot sun. As summer temperatures rise in Ontario, so too do smog days. Dur- ing last year’s drought-like sum- mer, the Ministry of the Environ- ment issued seven smog advisories covering 20 days in Durham Re- gion, part of a record-breaking 33 smog alerts issued across the province. This year, the odd rainfalls have helped push the numbers slightly down. As of Aug. 2, there were seven smog advisories in Durham but only covering 12 days. Still, those figures are a far cry from 1993 when the Province first began issuing smog alerts. That year, only one advisory was issued in Durham for one day. The Ministry of Environment (MOE) says the increasing num- bers are due to the improved sci- ence in predicting smog events. It maintains Ontario’s air quality has been improving steadily since 1988. But is it getting better fast enough? A California study re- leased this year and outlined at Toronto’s Smog Summit in June revealed smog could cause asthma in children. And the Ontario Medical Asso- ciation (OMA) has called air pollu- tion a “public health crisis.” It pre- dicts 69 people in Durham will die this year due to smog-induced res- piratory and cardiac illnesses, 60 per cent of them seniors. Across the province, it expects 10,000 people will be admitted to hospital and 13,000 will visit the emer- gency room due to the effects of air pollution. We are the main source of smog - that is, our lifestyles at least. Transportation, especially the cars and trucks people use for personal use, is the largest source of smog- contributing nitrogen oxide. That is followed by an electrici- ty-generating sector that says it is caught in a catch-22. For example, though it primarily uses nuclear power and hydro-electric dams to generate electricity, Ontario Power Generation switches on its five coal-fired power plants to help cover peak power demands, espe- cially in the summertime when On- tarians are hiding from the heat and turning on their two million air conditioners. The third major source of smog is industry, including cement kilns and smelters, followed by residen- tial sources such as lawn mowers, other small engines and pesticides. Of course, since air knows no bounds and goes where the wind pushes it, about half of Durham’s smoggy haze actually drifts in from the United States, where the larger population means more cars and where coal-fired plants provide a larger percentage of electricity. On- tario is currently pursuing a lawsuit against several mid-western states for this incursion of pollution, but ironically New York State is doing the same to Ontario. The problem for both complainants is that pre- vailing winds are eastward (which also means Durham picks up pollu- tion from the rest of the Greater Toronto Area). Each smog day, the Province asks residents to do things like not use lawnmowers, reduce car use and turn off lights when possible. But what are governments doing in return? Short of doing its best to im- prove transit with limited dollars, Durham Region itself is limited in what it can do to ease smog. The burden, then, falls upon the two upper levels of government, both of which say they’re making im- portant strides to improve air qual- ity. In late 2000, Canada and the United States signed the Ozone annex, an addendum to a previous air quality agreement signed in the 1980s to address the sources of acid rain. The annex sets out targets to re- duce emissions of both nitrogen oxides and volatile organic com- pounds by 2007. For instance, Environment Canada said Ontario’s electricity sector, essentially referring to its coal plants, must cut in half its emission of nitrogen oxides over the next five years compared to 1999 levels. The federal government will also introduce stricter emission standards for SUVs and trucks in 2004. And it is looking at stricter standards for small engines, to fall in line with U.S. rules. The Province responded to the Ozone annex by introducing new emission standards for its electrici- ty sector at the start of this year. The environment ministry is now working on formulating similar emission caps for industrial pol- luters. To many, though, that’s not enough. Since 1997, the Ontario Clean Air Alliance (OCAA) has pushed Ontario to close down its coal-fired power plants in favour of using natural gas or, even better, re- newable energy sources such as wind or solar power. “Phasing out the coal plants is the least-cost option to achieve a great reduction in air pollution,” explains Jack Gibbons, a spokesman for the OCAA, which, it should be noted, receives five per cent of its operating funding by En- bridge Consumers Gas. Renewable energy currently provides less than half of one per cent of Ontario Power’s energy ca- pacity. But Mr. Gibbons says cleaner natural gas could be used until green energy becomes more viable. He estimates it would cost Ontario Power $4.85 billion to con- vert four of its coal plants to natur- al gas (the Lakeview Plant in Mis- sissauga already plans to stop using coal by 2005). Amortized over 25 years, those conversion costs would translate to less than $5 per month for electricity customers, says Mr. Gibbons. OPG spokesman John Earl takes issue with OCAA’s figures, saying a cost-per-customer conversion esti- mate is not possible to calculate in Ontario’s open electricity market. He adds converting to natural gas could drive up the price of gas, leading to unpredictable customer price increases. Energy Minister Chris Stock- well has repeatedly said it is im- possible to shut down any coal plants at this time because Ontari- ans will be left in the dark. However, in early June, an all- party committee on alternative fuel sources recommended the Province force Ontario Power to shut down two of its four coal plants by 2005, when reactors at both the Pickering and Bruce Nu- clear plants will be coming back on-line and can pick up some of the Province’s electricity generation. The committee recommended the remaining two coal plants be shut down by 2015, but not to be replaced by natural gas. Instead, it recommends the Province force electricity generators to invest in green power. MPP Steve Gilchrist, who chaired the committee, believes the future of green power is near. He says both wind and solar power are becoming increasingly viable and economically feasible, an important selling point for ener- gy retailers. “If the price differential (be- tween traditional and green energy) was relatively small...I think (cus- tomers) would switch to green power,” Mr. Gilchrist says. Other recommendations by the committee include providing in- centives for customers to purchase green technology such as a natural gas-fuelled car or solar panels for the roof of their house. Mr. Gilchrist also took dead aim at users of diesel fuel, including municipal transit bodies. “The fact is a car manufacturer today puts out less than one per cent of the pollution of a car made in 1970,” he says. “So the reality is, an old diesel bus is not better than 50 new cars.” Oshawa Councillor Warren Young, the vice-chairman of the Oshawa Transit Commission, says he understands Mr. Gilchrist’s en- vironmental concerns but says mu- nicipalities can’t afford to invest in unproven and more expensive al- ternative fuels for buses. If the Province covered the extra cost of a natural gas bus compared to diesel, for example, Oshawa would gladly take them up on the offer, he says. The Province is expected to re- spond to the fuel committee’s 141 recommendations by October. In the meantime, while individ- ual actions may seem insignificant, it is important for Ontarians to change their lifestyle in order to beat smog instead of merely rely- ing on government initiatives, says an Environment Canada spokesman. “You have to recognize while 50 per cent (of smog) is maybe at- tributable to transboundary activi- ties, 50 per cent of it is attributable to local,” says John Mills, regional director for Environment Canada. “And those activities, like run- ning a lawnmower or travelling in a car just to pick up a loaf of bread down half a block, is contributing to that.” What can you do? 1. Reduce car use or car- pool. Environment Canada says vehicles are becoming less polluting and more fuel ef- ficient, but those benefits are outstripped by the ever-in- creasing amount of new auto- mobiles and the fact Canadi- ans are driving more often and longer distances. 2.Turn off lights when you aren’t using them. 3.Turn down the air condi- tioner (raise the temperature a couple of degrees). Ontario’s two million air conditioners cre- ate a summertime effect equal to adding the power demands of a city the size of Toronto on the Province’s electricity grid. 4. Limit use of small-engine tools, such as mowers, chain- saws and leaf blowers. Use electric-powered tools or, better yet, manual tools. 5. Avoid using aerosol sprays and cleaners and oil- based paints. 6. Don’t light up on smog days, whether it be a cigarette or a gas barbecue. If your dentures feel loose, click , slip or cause chew- ing problems they can aggravate other health problems. Problems known to be associated with poorly fitting den- tures include chron- ic bad breath, sore spots, jaw pain , speech difficulties and a host of dietary problems. Standard or Personalized? Most standard dentures fit com- fortably and chew well, but they may look “too perfect” to suit you. Personalized den- tures treat each tooth individually, so the smile looks more natural. Personalized den- tures are also hand-crafted to match your eyes and eyeglasses, hair colouring , complexion, age and facial features. Is it time to let your smile shine through? If your dentures are more then 5 years old, make an appointment to talk with your denturist. Munch blueberries, slay those ‘free radicals’ “My God, why did you buy so many blueberries?” my wife ex- claimed. But I wasn’t about to tell her. I had indeed bought a lot of blue- berries driving back from northern Ontario. I intended to surprise her by writing the great Canadian novel, and wow people at the next dinner party with scintillating remarks. The blueberries were going to do it, of course. I had good reason to believe I had- n’t wasted my money. Several med- ical reports have labelled blueberries “the No. 1 antioxidant.” That is, blue- berries destroy what’s known as “free radicals,” the waste products of me- tabolism. It’s believed free radicals increase the risk of cancer, heart disease and cause wear and tear on the brain. The more free radicals, the more we are subjected to what’s called “oxidative stress,” and the greater the chance you’ll forget where you left your car keys or lose your balance. Dr. James Joseph is Chief of the Neuroscience Lab at the U.S. Depart- ment of Agriculture’s Human Nutri- tion Center on Aging at Tuft’s Uni- versity. He and his colleagues tested blueberries and other fruits to see how they affect the brain and aging. The result? Blueberries were at the top of the list when tested against 60 other fruits and vegetables. Dr. Joseph reports blueberries re- ceived the highest ORAC score (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capac- ity). This is a measure of an antioxi- dant’s ability to destroy free radicals. The only other produce with bet- ter scores were prunes and raisins. But these are dried versions of other fruits. Squeezing the water out of a fruit automatically concentrates its ORAC score so it’s not a fair com- parison. But is there any concrete evidence blueberries decrease the number of free radicals? Researchers at Tufts University fed rats a regular diet, a diet with added vitamin E, a diet with added spinach and one with added blueberries for eight weeks. The rats were then exposed to pure oxygen for 48 hours which is different than the air we breathe. Pure oxygen causes a marked in- crease of free radicals in rats and it does the same in humans. Researchers found that blueber- ries did a much better job of blocking the adverse effect of the free radicals than spinach or vitamin E. Other researchers at Tufts, Bar- bara Shukitt-Hale and her col- leagues, tested the effect of blueber- ries on the learning and motor skills of 19-month-old rats. In rats these are the first things to be affected by aging. And testing a 19-month-old rat is equivalent to investigating a 60- year-old human. Rats were given their regular diet or one supplemented with either spinach, strawberries or blueberries. They were then subjected to several tests. Researchers found blueberry-fed rats were able to remain on a log longer before falling off. In the next test rats were placed in a pool of cold water with a raft in the centre. Since rats don’t like cold water they all soon learned the location of the raft and swam to it. In this experiment, it didn’t matter whether the rats were fed spinach, strawberries or blueber- ries. Those on specials diets re- membered the location of the platform better than the rats fed a regular diet. So what’s in blueberries that may have an effect on our brains? Blueberries are rich in antioxidant phytochemicals (plant chemicals) called antho- cyanins. It’s possible these plant chemicals are more potent than other antioxidants such as vita- min C and E. Dr. Joseph believes blueber- ries and other fruits and vegeta- bles move chemicals into and out of the blood at crucial times in order to prevent damage to cells. But, at the moment there’s no concrete clinical evidence that blueberries will make you a genius. And Dr. Joseph adds this cau- tion. Just as it’s prudent to diver- sify your financial portfolio, it’s also wise to do the same with fruits and vegetables. For in- stance, tomatoes have a low ORAC score but are rich in ly- copenes which may help to pre- vent prostate cancer. So don’t count solely on blueberries! Now, how have I fared? For weeks I’ve faithfully had a bowl- ful of blueberries every morn- ing. I recently said to my wife, “Have you noticed anything dif- ferent lately?” “About what?” she replied. Well, maybe at the next party someone will see the difference. Besides, I’ve still got a ton of blueberries to eat. W. The first-ever meeting of a users’ group for the two new leash-free dog areas of Ajax met to get to know each other, but also to find out what’s expected of them. Ajax deputy clerk An- drew Brouwer noted the turnout was “pretty small”, but the comments were “positive overall”. He attributed the turnout to it being the middle of the summer. “Fifty invitations were sent. There were 10 to 15 there. It was like a focus group” giving people a chance to “open up,” Mr. Brouwer said. Ajax council recently opened the two areas on a trial basis. A report to council will be issued in the fall, detailing the suc- cess or failure, along with possible improvements if politicians decide to keep them open. The sites are at the northwest corner of the Greenwood Conservation Area, at Church Street and the 5th Concession, and on Westney Road South at Clements Drive West, next to the parking lot used by anglers. Mr. Brouwer said hav- ing a users’ group is “es- sential. They provide feed- back so we have good in- formation to give back to council. “They’re ambassadors for the rules and regula- tions. “They’ll tell others, in a friendly manner, the rules and regulations. I don’t see having a leader per se. They’ll provide input, so it’s not staff run. It’s not an advocacy group.” He noted some other municipalities, including Oshawa, have contacted Ajax about the approach it took in setting up the areas. “We did recommend a users’ group. They are im- portant. If we do it right, it will be a good example for other places,” Mr. Brouwer stated. The users group “may be called on for consulta- tion”, such as the type of signs posted in the area. “They’ll tell us when we’re doing something right. They’ll pick up litter or garbage. They should be thanked for it.” Birth of first child for crew member the biggest surprise of event PICKERING —Oh baby, this was a championship to remember. The five-man crew of the ‘Bohica’, which races out of the Frenchman’s Bay Yacht Club, was sailing along in first at the J24 Ontario Championships last weekend when a cry for help went out. “I received a call from my wife,” re- called first-time daddy and helmsman Brent Hughes this week. “She went into labour a month early. I had to walk away.” The bouncing baby girl, Aubrey, may have kept Hughes from one race, which he doesn’t regret for a second, but the ‘Bohi- ca’ was in the water for two thirds and a fourth-place finish at the four-race champi- onship, held at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. Those results, all coming Saturday, had the cumulative effect of leaving the crew in first following the first day of racing. With Sunday’s call to daddy duty, the Bohica missed its final run but still finished fifth overall among the 17 entries. The solid standing was just the latest in a run of impressive finishes for the local crew, which is made up of the 30-year-old Hughes, a Pickering resident, tactician Irwyn Naidoo, 28, of Pickering, trimmer Rich Coram, 31, of Unionville, pitman Mark Bowman, 32, of Whitby, and fore- deck Tom Oliver, 23, of Pickering. On July 27 and 28 the Bohica finished second out of 30 boats at a five-race regat- ta in New York State, losing its lead the last day to the third-place crew at the recent World Sailing Championships in Kingston, Ont. In Kingston, the local sailors finished 40th out of 62 of the world’s best crews, including a seventh-place showing in one of the nine races held over five days. The standing also left them as the ninth-best Canadian boat. “We had a very, very competitive fleet and everything went well,” said Hughes. He added the overall experience offered momentum for the more recent regattas. “Absolutely, we definitely came out of there with strong sails,” he said. The Bohica wraps up the season Oct. 3 to 6 with the Pan-Am trials at the Port Credit Yacht Club in Mississauga. The Pickering resident failed to finish one race and was seventh in the other as rounds 5 and 6 of the 2002 Canadian Formula Ford Championship hit the track in Trois-Rivières, Que. Aug. 3 and 4. Guerrieri, who drives the No. 11 NGCL Cherry Beach Sound Vector, was in the 13th starting position for the 25-lap Round 6 on Sunday. After some early passes and an intense battle for ninth on Lap 17, the local racer set- tled in for a seventh place finish and nine champi- onship points. Louis-Philippe Du- moulin, on his home track, took his second checkered flag of the weekend. The wins were also his fourth and fifth of the season, tying a series record held by three other drivers. Just 24 hours earlier, Guerrieri started ninth for the 25-lap Round 5, moving up to sixth after five laps and fourth on Lap 16. It was then that his day ended in 17th place. “The car was running very well but suddenly the engine stopped because of an electrical glitch,” the 18- year-old said in a release. Guerrieri boosted his championship points total to 66 with two races to go. That’s tops among rookies and good enough for third spot, 22 behind Didier Schraenen and seven ahead of Ashley Taws in fourth. Dumoulin leads the pack with 123 points. Next up is the series’sec- ond stop of the year at Mo- sport, where Guerrieri fin- ished second in May. The drivers hit the Bowmanville- area track Aug. 16 to 18, be- fore finishing the season Sept. 27 to 29 at Circuit Mont.-Tremblant in Quebec. It turns darker and darker when used, because of the high temperature (almost boiling) generated by high pressure (up to 1800 psi). High temperature causes the fluid to start breaking down, causing electrochemical degradation. The more the fluid breaks down, the more it will be contaminated. Sludge and varnish are the main byproducts. Sludge and varnish starts to cause clogging of valves, which in turn causes higher and higher pres- sures, then more contamination, and more and more PROBLEMS. Now, at THRIFTY MECHANIC SHOP, we have an Option for you. Using a state of the art “Power Steering Flush Machine”, we will provide you with the latest service procedure that safely removes varnish and sludge deposits, and cleans all internal power steering components (pump, rack and pinion, hoses, valves, switches and P/S cooler lines). Then the system is filled with fresh fluid and conditioners that revitalize the seals and O-rings of the system. Now that you have educated your- self reading this article, if your vehicle P/S system is showing any signs of cont- amination, noise, stiffness, rough or hard turning, this service is the first thing you should try before it becomes necessary to perform major repair work, or even the need for replacement of very expensive P/S components. SEE AD FOR SAVINGS A Power Steering System Flush is Good Preventative Maintenance It’s important to educate yourself on all of the various systems in your vehicle including your power steering. Neglecting them could result in expensive repairs in the future. PICKERING —The Pickering Power Strikers under-11 boys’ soccer team used a strong offence and stringent defence to claim the Ambassador Cup in Kingston. Pickering, which plays in the Central East Soccer League, worked overtime to clinch the title over 14 other premier and division 1 and 2 teams at the Ambassador Cup Tournament. Facing North Scarbor- ough Strikers in the final, the score was tied 1-1 through regulation and extra time, leading to penalty kicks. The Power had the advantage there, winning 4-3. “The outstanding work of the strikers, the creative play of the midfielders and the im- penetrable wall of defenders” were the keys to the tourna- ment success said assistant coach Ken Michael. After going 3-0 in round- robin play, Pickering dumped the Ajax Warriors 3-1 in the semifinals.
