Friends, family say farewell to Pickering lad killed in ATV accident PICKERING —Funeral Services were being held today (Friday) at the Scar- borough Funeral Centre for Andrew Mason, killed Sunday in an ATV accident in north Pickering. And the youngster will be sorely missed by neighbour and friend Bruce Wilkins, who was in Andrew’s Grade 2 class at Maple Ridge Public School in Pickering. The two boys used to play at each other’s homes. “I will miss him,” he said in an in- terview Thursday. Bruce’s father, Darrel Wilkinson, said Andrew was at their house just this past winter, helping build a snowman in their yard. The boy’s sudden passing shocked him. “They were good friends,” Mr. Wilkin- son said. “He was very outgoing, very re- spectful and well-mannered.” Mr. Wilkinson, who said his son also goes off-roading, noted Andrew’s death might make him reconsider whether the activity is suitable for eight-year-olds. “I’ll be leery about it now,” he said. Meanwhile, Ontario’s deputy chief coroner said this week he is considering holding an inquest into the death. “Part of the problem is the fact that you do not need a licence to drive an ATV,” said deputy chief James Cairns. — FILES FROM TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE Pickering wants Hwy. 407 sooner, not later Check postings before lake swim ANDREW MASON most important for our City from an econom- ic perspective and it will connect the Region of Durham to the rest of the Greater Toronto Area.” Last month the Ministry of Trans- portation notified the Durham works committee a new environ- mental assess- ment (EA) needs to be done before construction could begin for the extension from Brock Road in Pickering through to Hwy. 35/115 in Clar- ington. The ministry also said the nec- essary EA would not be done until the end of 2004, which could delay completion of the extension until 2010. Coun. McLean said he was shocked and sur- prised by the delay since the City’s original un- derstanding was the extension would be com- pleted by 2005. He found unani- mous support for his motion at Monday’s council meeting, calling for the ministry to complete its EA by December 2003 and com- plete the highway by 2005. “The ministry can move through this far more quickly,” said Ward 2 Regional Councillor Mark Holland, agreeing the delay would cause Pickering the unnecessary loss of the eco- nomic opportuni- ties the highway is expected to bring. An environ- mental assess- ment was done for the route in 1994, but never filed with the ministry. Coun. Holland said it would be a waste to toss out the work already done and Ward 3 Regional Coun- cillor Rick John- son said he does- n’t think things have changed so much that the EA needs to be done again. “Sooner rather than later we need to get the 407 pushed through,” added Coun. Johnson, claiming the increase in traffic pouring off the end of Hwy. 407 into Brougham (Brock Road and Hwy. 7) would be tempered by the com- pletion of the extension. Council’s hope has long been that an in- dustrial base will settle around the northern toll highway bringing with it the development charges and continued industrial tax revenues the City so desperately needs. “Two-thousand-and-five may be a little far-fetched, but it can be done much sooner than 2010,” said Coun. McLean. “We want that industrial base settling in Pickering.” P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, August 2, 2002 Remember, we are the factory. Please visit our website at www.sleepfactory.com Please visit our website at www.sleepfactory.com SERVING DURHAM & KAWARTHA COMMUNITIES FOR OVER 24 YEARS! rrs TM FINANCING ACCEPTED PHONE ORDERS ACCEPTED Since 1978 Since 1978 Set $339 DOUBLE $229 Set $409 QUEEN $289 Set $499 KING $479 Set $799 COMFORT SLEEP Single Mattress $189 $249Set $419 DOUBLE $309 Set $489 QUEEN $369 Set $549 KING $519 Set $849 ORTHOPEDIC S/E Single Mattress DOUBLE $539 Set $779 QUEEN $599 Set $859 KING $769 Set $1249 ORTHO SUPREME $429Single Mattress Si n g l e M a t t r e s s e s fr o m $ 5 9 . 0 0 POCKET COIL S/E $389 DOUBLE $499 Set $729 QUEEN $579 Set $829 KING $709 Set $1089 Single Mattress • Bed Frame • Pillow Cases • Mattress Pad • Bed Rails • Sheet Straps • Comforter • Layaway • Pillow • Set-up • Disposal of Old Set • Pillow Protector • Percale Set of Sheets • Local Delivery NO PST & GST ONLY WITH ANY MATCHING MATTRESS SET PURCHASED OR Any 4 FREE CHOICES $15995PC. Michael Thomas O’Reilly, 40, of Oshawa, is the subject of an Ontario College of Teachers’ hearing set to resume in Toronto Thursday, Aug. 15, to determine if he is guilty of pro- fessional misconduct. “I believe I deserve to be back in the classroom,” the former Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School teacher said in an interview on Thursday. “I’ve proven in a criminal court and shown to a psychiatrist that I’m fit to teach and not guilty of a crime.” John Vesters, the board’s acting education director, said Thursday the board fired Mr. O’Reilly “for just cause” after a “very exhaustive, very thorough” internal investigation. Mr. Vesters said Mr. O’Reilly was a board employee for roughly 10 years. In November 1999, Mr. O’Reilly was charged with sexual assault after an 18-year-old woman complained to Durham Regional Police. Mr. Vesters said after the charge was laid, Mr. O’Reilly was removed from teaching duties and assigned to the Oshawa school board office, where he continued to work until his dismissal. During an Ontario Court of Jus- tice trial in Oshawa in 2000, the for- mer student claimed Mr. O’Reilly kissed and fondled her at her work- place. Mr. O’Reilly admitted visiting the woman but denied her allegations, testifying the woman made sexual advances towards him, whereupon he left. Justice Ray Taillon, in his Decem- ber 2000 ruling, acquitted Mr. O’Reilly, saying conflicting testimo- ny left reasonable doubt of his guilt in the case. Mr. O’Reilly in Thursday’s inter- view said after his acquittal, the board asked him to undergo a psychi- atric assessment to determine if he was fit to teach. He said he did so, and the psychi- atrist determined he was fit to return to the classroom, though he made recommendations for the board to implement. Mr. O’Reilly claimed the board argued it would be too difficult to im- plement the recommendations and as a result he was fired. He said he could not recall exact- ly what the recommendations were without reviewing his files. Mr. Vesters would not comment on those claims. Denys Giguere, spokesman for the Ontario College of Teachers, in an interview said Mr. O’Reilly’s hear- ing, before a college disciplinary panel, began in June. “The allegations against Mr. O’Reilly are that he touched and kissed a young woman without her consent,” he said. Mr. Giguere said a court’s deci- sion to acquit or find an accused teacher not guilty has no bearing on the college’s investigative process. “Behaviour does not have to be criminal for it not to be acceptable for a teacher,” he explained. Mr. O’Reilly continues to deny the allegations against him and said he and his lawyer are grieving his dismissal and proceeding with the college of teachers case. He said he believes he is “an ef- fective and good teacher” and re- mains committed to returning to the profession. “Ever since this problem started that was my goal, to get back in the classroom and resume my job and my life as I knew it two years ago,” he said. Durham Regional Police said the victim was getting out of her car near the Zellers store about 6:15 p.m. Tues- day when a man approached and asked her for a cigarette. The Pickering woman complied but was grabbed by the man, who held a sharp object to her throat and demand- ed money, police said. “The victim co-operated and gave the male a small amount of cash and her watch. The male then punched the victim on the side of the face knocking her to the ground,” said Sergeant Paul Malik, police spokesman. The attacker fled on a black motor- cycle with blue trim, heading south through the lot. The woman suffered a minor cut to the neck as well as several cuts and bruises and was treated at the scene by paramedics. “She was extremely shaken up and upset by the ordeal,” Sgt. Malik said. Coroner’s inquest being considered CORONER’S from page 1 BY JACQUIE McINNES Staff Writer DURHAM ––The sweltering heat might make it seem like the oxygen has disappeared from the air but official measurements indicate Durham is experiencing a more breathable summer than last year. “So far this year we have had seven smog advisories for Durham covering 12 days compared to last year when we had 16 days by this time,” says Dave Yap, Co-ordinator of Air Quality and Meteorology for the Ontario Ministry of Environ- ment and Energy. Advisories are is- sued when ozone smog “levels are expected to get into the poor area,” Mr. Yap adds. Despite the 12 days, including yesterday,Aug. 1, when Durham re- ceived smog alerts from the min- istry, there have only been four days of poor quality air conditions report- ed in Oshawa, the Durham testing station, according to the ministry’s Web site, www.airqualityontario.com. However, even on days the Os- hawa ozone levels were reported as moderate, some parts of Durham may have experienced poor quality air, says Mr. Yap. “That doesn’t necessarily repre- sent all of Durham. It’s not a full picture,” he explains. “Sometimes in areas where there is heavy traffic, like downtown Toronto, there will actually be a bit lower ozone read- ing,” he adds. In an effort to increase accuracy of the air quality index, later this month the ministry will begin mon- itoring of fine particles in the air in addition to ozone levels. While more than 50 per cent of the pollution that creates smog for Durham comes from south of the border, at home there are two signif- icant sources of smog, says Mr. Yap. The first is vehicle emissions and the second is energy production. On a hot smoggy day in late June, a number of Ontario munici- palities and regions met at the CN Tower to commit to doing their part to help reduce the province’s smog levels. Ironically, as they signed the inter-governmental declaration, par- ticipants could barely see five miles into the Toronto skyscape due to the smog, relates Durham Health and Social Services chairman and Brock councillor Larry O’Connor. Durham, Ajax, Oshawa, Toronto and York were among the Ontario municipalities that committed to policies to clean our air. In Ajax, council has committed to introducing proactive policies, says Gary Muller, the town’s senior planner. “We looked at initiatives of other GTA municipalities,” he says. “We looked at how we can maintain green areas and protect wetlands and woodlots in our Official Plan. These are things we can do as a cor- poration.”As new vehicles are need- ed the Town will look at stocking the fleet with low-sulphur cars and trucks. Buildings can be made more energy efficient, he adds. “We thought as a region it was time for us to clean up our act as well,” says Coun. O’Connor, who notes some of Durham’s corporate citizens have made attempts to be- come more environmentally-friend- ly in their practices. Although the efforts of the Re- gion of Durham may not have a large impact on the overall ozone levels for the GTA, he points out, cumulatively, municipal and region- al governments can make a differ- ence. “It’s one of those cases where we have to act locally to clean-up globally. That’s where things like our transportation plan make a dif- ference.” The Region’s smog-reduc- tion initiatives include improving public transit co-ordination across the region and providing a choice of transit options to reduce air emis- sions. As well, water-efficiency plans, Official Plan policies, tree conservation bylaws, pesticide edu- cation and the formation of environ- mental committees are among the programs the Region has committed to. As well as external policies, the Region is looking at its own opera- tions and buildings for improved en- vironmental policies. “It’s a chance to look inward, look at what we can be doing,” says Mr. O’Connor. Last Sept. 11, something both in- credibly tragic and wondrous oc- curred. For one brief moment, hu- manity stopped, stood still, and for the most part, came together as one. United in grief and disbelief, we set aside our problems — some trivial, others seemingly insurmountable — to mourn alongside a shell-shocked nation. Numb and incredulous, we witnessed great acts of bravery and selflessness. Recognizing the fragili- ty of our own existence, we tasted fear, propelling us to open both our hearts and our wallets in an effort to help heal the wounds of loss and dev- astation. We rushed, with great love and compassion, to raise incredible sums of money to aid our friends in need. United in pain, we sent our re- sources and our prayers. So why can’t we maintain that quality of energy to devise and exe- cute an effective strategy to help our own poor, homeless, and oppressed? We avert our eyes so as not to see the plight of those less fortunate, and ap- pease our guilt by hastily endorsing a cheque to a charity of choice. Yet, we can give so much more. We can bestow the gift of time as a volunteer, sharing our skills and wisdom with others. Most important- ly we can honour the precious gift of family and friends. At the very least, we can greet the day with optimism and share a smile with our loved ones. The power behind the smallest of kind gestures and the rewards that come our way may surprise us. Tol- erance and charity begin not only in our homes but also in our hearts. In 1986, with lower Manhattan as a backdrop, ol’ blue eyes, Frank Sinatra, celebrated the Statue of Lib- erty’s 100th anniversary with an emotional rendition of ‘The House I Live In,’ written by Earl Robinson and Lewis Allan. As the anniversary of our “day of awareness” looms near, let’s give some thought to a stanza taken from this moving song. ‘The house I live in, The goodness everywhere A land of wealth and beauty With enough for all to share A house that we call Freedom The home of Liberty And a promise for tomorrow!’ Let’s celebrate this house of promise we live in As first anniversary of Sept. 11 approaches, volunteer time or offer a smile in tribute Marcey Collins Opinion Shaper shouston@durhamregion.com P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, August 2, 2002 Income test comes up short for homes To the editor: Re: ‘I’ll have to mortgage my wheelchair,’ July 19. I must take issue with the statement of Rosalind Robertson, spokesman for Dan Newman, Ontario minister responsible for long-term care. We find ourselves in a very similar situ- ation to Jessie Podpora. My 83-year-old mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease six years ago. When it was no longer possible to pro- vide proper care for her at home, we reluc- tantly “placed” her in a nursing home last August. Her total income comes from old age security and guaranteed income supple- ment and is currently $1,000 per month. On her behalf we pay the nursing home ap- proximately $1,600 per month for a semi- private room. A letter from the director of the facility to all residents advising of the rental rate in- crease clearly states, “there is no rate reduc- tion for preferred accommodation.” This has been confirmed by the administrator of the home. Clearly then, by saying “any res- ident with an income of less than $20,000 per year can apply for a rate reduction”, Ms. Robertson is not providing all the details. In fact, the income test is applicable to less than 40 per cent of nursing home residents, and is currently linked only to those who are in ‘basic’accommodation. If it is the ministry’s intent to now extend assistance to all residents then a clear state- ment is needed to this effect. The income test should not be linked with the type of ac- commodation — this is an altogether differ- ent issue — one of availability. The relatives of many residents, like us, have had to ac- cept admission to the higher cost semi-pri- vate room because that was what was avail- able, given the waiting time for a room is in excess of one year. Clearly we are in a no- win situation. Editorial &OPINIONS PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER AUGUST 2, 2002 Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Most high school and university students are happy to flip burgers, cut grass or, if they’re really lucky, work in an automo- bile plant or on a construction crew during the summer. But for some fortunate students, there’s a dream to be fol- lowed, a passion to play out. All they need is a little money and just a bit of encouragement. Melissa McKnight, only 18, is getting a great opportunity thanks to the Business Advisory Centre Durham’s (BACD) ‘Summer company: student entrepreneurship experience’. The long-winded name, in short, awards start-up costs and business training to help launch a fledgling company. In Ms. McKnight’s case that would be Relaxing Thymes, a spa accessory retailer she runs out of her Oshawa home. The experience is all the better for the teen since she has as her mentor fur fashion designer Paula Lishman, world-renowned for her ability to market her clothing. Mrs. Lishman has been there to help Ms. McKnight fine-tune her business plan and offer her real-world expertise. Ms. McKnight is just one of six students in Durham taking part in the program. She’s joined by Jennifer Hayman of White- vale, whose business is the Garden Planner; Matthew Blanche of Whitby, who has created Epic Interlock and Landscape; Graham Greenland of Whitby with Greenland Home Exterior; Carla McLaughlin of Blackstock, with Backyard Splash; and Brock Baker of Bowmanville, who runs Up-A-Grade Tutoring. For Mr. Greenland, who is receiving business advice from Xtreme Water president Paul Valdstyn, the program has provided him an opportunity to get a first-hand taste of the business world. “I’m extremely happy I did this. Being my own boss is in my fu- ture and I’m having a great time.” Time and again, small businesses have been shown to be the bedrock of our national economy. The creation, growth and on- going success of small firms is the lifeblood of Canadian busi- ness. “The purpose of the program is for the students to truly expe- rience every angle of running their own business,” says Brenda Ruddy-Anderson, an information officer at BACD. “We want them to have a positive experience that encourages them to think about entrepreneurship as a viable choice once they are finished school.” While the chance to run a business for these young students will only last a summer, the experience of being an entrepreneur will last a lifetime, making it far more than a summer job. Such young minds and hands will chart the future course for our coun- try and with this innovative program, they’re getting an excellent head start. Young entrepreneurs get head start Program provides funds, encouragement as bedrock of economy gets a boost NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY EDITION, August 2,2002 PAGE 7 A/P BY LESLEY BOVIE Staff Writer DURHAM —He drove the Popemobile last week, made sure United States National Se- curity Adviser Condoleeza Rice was secure during the Kananask- is Summit in June, and now his next assignment is preparing for the Queen’s visit in October. Michael Kenny could have the most interesting and respon- sible job on the planet. And he and his family have lived in Port Perry for the last three years. “It’s been an incred- ible year,” said Corporal Kenny, a 29-year veteran with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and a member of its VIP security unit for the past five. Responsible for the security of heads of state, Cpl. Kenny has driven the likes of Prince Phillip, former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, former Canadian prime minister John Turner and countless ambas- sadors. But being chauffeur to Pope John Paul II during World Youth Day last week in Toronto was one of the pinnacles of his ca- reer. “It was the thrill of a life- time,” he said. “It was an ab- solutely unbelievable feeling to have somebody of his stature in the vehicle.” Usually the RCMP uses its own armoured limousines for heads of state visits. But since an assassination attempt in 1981, the Pope has travelled exclusive- ly in modified Mercedes Benzes, which encase his entourage in bulletproof glass and are known worldwide as Popemobiles. A Popemobile was flown from the Vatican to the Canadian Armed Forces Base in Trenton at the end of June to allow Cpl. Kenny’s unit time to get accus- tomed to the unique vehicle. “It didn’t take long but I did- n’t know if it was a standard or an automatic, or how it would handle,” he said, describing it like a sports utility vehicle. Cpl. Kenny was presented to the Pope at Morrow Park, where he received a commemorative medallion before driving him through the crowds of young people at the CNE Thursday and again in Downsview Saturday and Sunday. “He’s very alert. He knows exactly what’s going on,” said the corporal. “And the kids really invigorate him. He drew strength from them, you could tell.” The pontiff actually surprised Cpl. Kenny by standing up as they drove through the Princess Gates during the CNE parade. He also marvelled at the crowd. Some were laughing and cheer- ing, while others cried. But while meeting interesting people is a plus in his line of work, Cpl. Kenny said it’s a job that comes with a lot of respon- sibility and must be taken seri- ously. Cpl. Kenny is now co-ordi- nating security for Queen Eliza- beth’s tour through southern On- tario in October. Over the years, they established Community Lifecare as we know it today, a compassionate company dedicated to the growing needs of each community it serves. Therefore, it was a grand day on Thursday, July 11, 2002 when the newest addition to Community Lifecare, serving Pickering residents for over four decades, opened its state of the art Complex Care and Alzheimer’s Care Units at Village Retirement Centre, located at 1955 ValleyFarm Road. On hand for the Grand Opening Ceremonies were; from left to right-Mayor Wayne Arthurs, Councilor Rick Johnson, Mr. Fred Lafontaine (Founder of Community Lifecare), (in front) Mr. Jack Hunt (President of the Resident’s Council), Mr. Dan McTeague (Member of Parliament), Mrs. Marie Lafontaine (Founder of Community Lifecare), Mr. Brian Bradley (President of Community Lifecare), Mr. Peter Gregor (Projects Manager of Community Lifecare, (in front) Mr. Don Hiller (first resident of Aspen- the Alzheimer Care Unit), Mrs. Nancy Wisken (Administrator of Village Retirement Centre) and Ms. Janet Ecker (Minister of Finance). Holding the ribbon for the Ribbon Cutting ceremony were Mayor Wayne Arthurs, Councilor Rick Johnson and Finance Minister Janet Ecker, these government officials each played an integral role in working with the community of Village Retirement Centre to create this Long Term Care expansion, meeting and exceeding the growing needs of Pickering. Mr. Jack Hunt is holding the shovel from the Official Ground breaking ceremonies held the day of construction of this new expansion began. The community of Pickering can be assured that with the tradition of quality, innovative thinking and careful planning of all of Community Lifecare’s projects, the best is yet to come. This Tuesday, August 6th only! Receive Durham woman survives lightning strike Bolt from the blue ‘felt like two huge hands pushing me’ BY JEREMY LE PAGE Staff Writer DURHAM ––She says it to- tally freaked her out. On Monday evening, around 6 p.m., Gayle Grant says she knew a storm was approaching. She wanted to get the deck chair cushions inside her house before the rain came. But when the 41-year-old Brooklin resident stepped out onto her deck, she says she re- ceived the shock of a lifetime. “I had a feeling of doom come over me,” she recalls. And for some reason, she explains, she knew she was about to be struck by lightning. However, the conductor of electricity proved to be a pool light and not her body, although the charge that was sent through the deck and into a nearby tree was enough to send her flying off her deck and onto the ground, she says. “It felt like two huge hands pushing me into the ground,” she explains. A doctor later told her the feeling was the current of electricity exiting via her head, she says. “I was freaking out,” she adds. She heard screaming after the lightning hit, she says, so she knew she wasn’t dead. Neighbours came to her aid, but she says she couldn’t speak. Her heart was beating really fast, she explains, and she felt like she might have a heart attack. After a 911 call was placed, paramedics arrived, she says, fol- lowed by a fire crew. According to the Whitby Fire Department, firefighters were told Ms. Grant was OK by the time they were on the scene. Durham Region Emergency Ser- vices told Ms. Grant she was very fortunate, and should go out and buy a lottery ticket, she says. “I feel really weird still,” Ms. Grant says. “(But) I’m up and walking around.” She says the idea of getting struck by lightning so close to her home had never occurred to her. And her advice to people: “Stay in the house if there’s light- ning.” Gayle Grant is lucky to have es- caped serious injury after a light- ning strike at her Durham home. PICKERING 905-839-8399 www.diplomatpools.com OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK! dpools@diplomatpools.com Conservative is the Trend in Kitchen Cupboards Kitchen cupboards are adopting a more conserva- tive style this year and the materials being used give them an authentic feel. It’s worth pointing out that such a combination allows you to create a timeless decor that will never become outdated. In addition to these refined contemporary models, you will also find lots of Victorian style woodwork with detailed molding this year. But even your regular run-of-the-mill kitchen cup- boards and their various components can be person- alized by giving them a dis- tinctively unique look. Some cupboards can have different sizes and shapes or even sur- faces can vary. You can also insert shelves between your cupboard doors. The impor- tant thing to keep in mind while designing your kitchen cupboards is to respect the proper propor- tions that will create overall harmony. You can even install camouflage doors to hide your appliances. The current trend in wood cupboard doors is toward antique finishes such as patina and ceruse. Warm oranges and cognac shades are also popular and work beautifully with maple. Alternatively, you can opt for a slightly darker oak, which will always be in style. Among the synthetic materials available, thermo- plastic is a popular choice. It is available in white and var- ious shades of beige. Naturally, for those who are on a tighter budget, melamine is still a great choice and is available in white or imitation wood finishes. Your two sons, ages five and eight, have worn you down over the months and they have finally suc- ceeded at convincing you to give them own special playroom. What’s more, they already have it all planned out: televi- sion, VCR, stereo, computer and refrig- erator... Refrigerator? Of course, they need to have snacks on hand! But you also have your own ideas of what they will really need and use. With a bit of care- ful planning, you can choose the right furniture and accessories to create a fun, welcoming playroom without blowing your bud- get. If your kids enjoy a lot of “floor” games such as playing with building blocks, toy cars and other such things, reserve an area that will be free of furniture and plants. Storage units made of wood with plastic drawers can be found in most furniture stores and are perfect for a playroom because they can be easily cleaned. A few large cush- ions will also be appreciat- ed when the kids decide to watch televi- sion or play a video game. Remember, a play- room is for kids, so make sure everything is within reach. You don’t want them to have to climb up on a chair or scale a bookshelf just to reach a toy. Your best bet is to stick to low fur- niture. If you want to buy tall bookcases for future use, keep everything that will interest them on the lowest shelves. If there is enough space in the play- room, add a desk and chair for drawing and painting. If space is restricted, opt for a foldout table that you can tuck away when it is not in use. Now, at 18, she is the sole propri- etor of Relaxing Thymes, a spa accesso- ry retailer, based out of her Oshawa home. As part of the Business Advisory Centre Durham’s (BACD) Summer Company: Student Entrepreneurship Experience program, Ms. McKnight was one of six students to be awarded with start-up costs and business training to help launch their own company. The young entrepreneurs were chosen based on a business plan, provided to the BACD. Funding for the program is pro- vided by the Government of Ontario Ministry of Enterprise, Opportunity and Innovation. A family friend told Ms. McKnight about the program, she explains. That was on a Friday, and the business plan was due the following Tuesday. “(I knew) it was a great opportunity,” she says about the program, describing how she rushed to get the proposal fin- ished on time. “(Starting a business) was something I was interested in be- fore,” she adds, although she admits she thought it wouldn’t be until she was a bit older. Ms. McKnight gained insight and advice from her parents, she says, and her program mentor, Paula Lishman, owner of Paula Lishman Ltd., a manu- facturing and design company. The two were paired up by the BACD, and Ms. McKnight says Mrs. Lishman’s business expertise was an asset to helping her fine-tune her busi- ness plan. Each student in the program is paired with a mentor suited to his or her busi- ness goals. The intent is to let mentors share their specific business experiences with the younger entrepreneurs. Graham Greenland, 23, is also in the entrepreneurship program. His busi- ness, Greenland Home Exterior, in Whitby, is mentored by Paul Valdstyn, President and CEO of Xtreme Water. His business is commissioned to do a variety of landscaping projects, includ- ing interlocking brickwork, painting, fence installation, and repairs to existing landscaping. Mr. Greenland discovered the pro- gram through McMaster University’s employment centre. Having already planned to create his own busi- ness for the summer, he says the opportunity to be part of the en- trepreneurship program was per- fect for him. “I’m extremely happy that I did this,” he says. “Being my own boss is in my future,” he adds. Although he is pursuing a masters degree in bio-medical engineering this fall at the Uni- versity of Toronto, he says this summer’s experience will be valuable regardless of the busi- ness he operates. “(And) I’m having a great time,” he says. Other Region of Durham en- trepreneurs include Matthew Blanche of Whitby, with his business, Epic Interlock and Landscape; Carla McLaughlin, of Blackstock, with Backyard Splash; Brock Baker, of Bow- manville, who runs Up-A-Grade Tutoring; and Jennifer Hayman, of Whitevale, whose business, the Garden Planner, is mentored by KX96 New Country FM’s marketing consultant, Kevin Kipping. “The purpose of the program is for the students to truly experi- ence every angle of running their own business,” says Brenda Ruddy-Anderson, an informa- tion officer at the BACD. More information about the pro- gram, or details regarding the student’s businesses, call 905- 665-6402 ext. 236. Over the course of the last couple of year’s we have more than doubled the number of active players on our House League roosters. The feedback from parent’s and player’s alike has been extremely positive. We could not continue to grow and prosper without the active participation of our Dolphin volunteer’s. Once again, thanks to all who made the 2002 House League Season one to remember!!! This year’s campaign also saw the introduction of our Collegiate Rep. Team. Our lads finished with a regular season record of 4 and 4 and made it to the semi-finals. In a hard fought battle they bowed out to the Markham Raiders 35-24. Our hat’s are off to you, Coach Dobbin, and the rest of your coaching staff and players. It should also be noted that many of this year’s Collegiate player’s have been actively recruited by Colleges and Universities on both sides of the Border. Go get’em boy’s! Our Bantam’s finished the regular Rep. Season with an outstanding 6 and 2 record. We will be hosting a quarter final match against York-Simcoe on August 10th. NEWS ADVERTISER BILLBOARD August 2, 2002 DURHAM —An ex- isting smog advisory has been continued for all of Durham Region. The provincial Ministry of Environment and Ener- gy has expanded the advi- sory because high smog levels are caused by the hot, sunny conditions and light southwesterly winds blowing air pollution up from the United States. The advisory covers the Greater Toronto Area and extends easterly to include Quinte, Northumberland, Peterborough and the Kawarthas. Steps to take to lower pollution levels include re- stricting the use of gas- powered equipment, tak- ing public transit or car- pooling to work, turning off your vehicle during prolonged periods of idling, turning down the air conditioning, and re- ducing electricity con- sumption. SIGNS Starring Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix Directed by M. Night Shya- malan Everything that farmer Gra- ham Hess (Mel Gibson) as- sumed about the world is changed when he discovers an intriguing message –– an intri- cate pattern of circles and lines –– carved deftly into his crops. As he investigates the un- folding mystery, what he finds will forever alter the lives of his brother (Joaquin Phoenix) and children. ‘Signs’ is a unique story that explores the mysterious real-life phenomena of crop signs and the effects they have on one man and his family. MASTER OF DISGUISE Starring Dana Carvey, Mark Devine II Directed by Perry Andelin Blake Pistachio Disguisey (Dana Carvey), a sweet-natured Ital- ian waiter at his father Fab- brizio’s restaurant, can’t figure out why he compulsively mimics his customers and de- sires to change his natural ap- pearance. What he doesn’t know yet is that these traits are part of the Disguisey family secret legacy. Fabbrizio has never told his son he comes from a long line of masters of disguise able to mask themselves as almost anyone or anything by har- nessing the great power of En- ergico. Such a talent makes Fab- brizio the kidnapping target of his former arch-enemy Devlin Bowman, a criminal master- mind with a plot to steal the world’s most precious trea- sures. Powerful display from City team too much for American competition PICKERING —The Pickering Power girls’under-18 soccer team took on the best in the U.S. — and won. The Power squad travelled to Blaine, Min- nesota to compete in the Schwann’s USA Cup earlier this month. Involving more than 800 teams from all over the world, the tournament is the largest in North America. The Pickering team, which plays in the On- tario Youth Soccer League — the highest level in the province — was entered in the Cup flight usually attracting the highest-calibre teams. After winning its pool and engaging in an all-out struggle in the semifinal, Pickering powered up to meet a strong, and undefeated team, Exodus, from Barrington, Illinois. The Power girls played in the main stadium at the National Sports Centre, which has 52 soccer fields. Continuing a trend that had per- sisted through the week, Pickering gave up the first goal of the game early in the second half and tied the contest with a goal by Breigh Cameron who, at age 15, is the youngest member of the squad. After 90 minutes in over-90 C temperatures, the teams played an extra 10 minutes of overtime before going to a shootout. Pickering scored on all of its shots and goalkeeper Rachel Spurs stopped all but one Exodus attempt for a well-deserved 4-1 victory in the shootout and an overall 2-1 win. Winning this competition continues a tradi- tion for the Pickering Soccer Club as its under-19 team won the USA Cup the previous year. In the semifinal, the Power met a strong team from St. Paul, Minnesota and, after extra time could not find a winner, the teams began a shootout. Pickering went on to win 2-1. Pickering finished first in round-robin play and advanced to the semifinal. Power record- ed wins over Minneapolis Kickers, Minn. (4- 2) and Twin City Firebirds, Minn. (4-1), and tied Madison Rumba, Wisc. (1-1). Goal scor- ers were Julia Sesti, Helen James, Sarah Lit- tle, O.J. Lym and Ashley Cox. Also competing from the Pickering club were the girls’ under-16 and under-19 teams and the boys’under-14 squad. All of the teams did well and advanced to the later stages of the competition. The under-19 team won the con- solation final after playing all their games short of players due to injuries. The Power under-18 team includes 14 Durham players from Newcastle, Bow- manville, Courtice, Port Perry, Oshawa, Whit- by, Ajax and Pickering. The balance of the team comes from Scarborough and East York. Other under-18 team members are Erin Watson, Sharon Cook, Lindsay Zara, Dana Szeghalmi, Andrea Mee, Andrea Park, Allie Ward-Bellingham, Stephanie McNorton, Kat- rina Gaudet, Katie Meleta, and Lindsay Cox. John Cook and Joe Spurs coach the team. P PAGE 22 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, August 2, 2002 Church St. S at Bayly St. 905-683-3210 4 HOLES OF GOLF ANY DAY! ANY TIME! $5 EXPRESS GOLFSports&LEISURE NEWS ADVERTISER AUGUST 2, 2002 Pickering soccer under-18s drink from USA Cup Pickering man lands whopper of a shot BY AL RIVETT Sports Editor PICKERING —It was, without a doubt, a most amazing day on the golf course for a Pickering man. One swing of the golf club for Bernie Leufkens, 44, had the net result of sending him and his 14-year-old son Brendan on a $10,000 fishing trip to British Columbia. He was taking part in a charity golf tournament at Angus Glen Monday afternoon. The Toronto firefighter stepped up to the sixth tee — a 168-yard, par 3 — at the Markham-area course, which is the site of this year’s Canadian Open. Using a three iron, he watched the ball sail toward the pin, hit about four-feet left of the flag, and then follow the contour of the green. Leufkens picks up the story from here. “We watched the ball disappear be- hind the pin. We thought it might be behind the pin. Who’s going to expect that it’s going in the cup? I haven’t put a ball on the green (in one shot) in three years never mind in the hole.” Walking up to the green, it became apparent to all in his foursome, the golfer with a 36 handicap had indeed stroked an ace. “I was in shock. It was a feeling of total disbelief; I couldn’t believe it ac- tually happened,” said Leufkens who describes himself as a casual golfer, getting out on the links an average of three or four times a year. After finishing the round, Leufkens celebrated at the clubhouse with the other members of his foursome. In the process of celebrating his good for- tune, he had his picture taken holding his lucky hole-in-one ball with the ‘Bud Girls’who were on hand. Leufkens said he and his son will depart Aug. 31 for the four-day, three- night trip to Englefield Bay in the Queen Charlotte Islands, north of Van- couver. Pickering’s Bernie Leufkens is flanked by two Bud girls, one of whom is holding the lucky ball he used to post a hole-in-one during a charity golf tournament at Angus Glen. Members of the Pickering Power girls’under-18 rep soccer team pose after capturing the championship at the high-calibre Schwann’s USA Cup Soccer Tournament in Blaine, Minnesota recently. The Pickering team defeated a talented group of U.S. squads in the prestigious tournament, including Exodus from Barrington, Illinois in the title game. Please recyclethis newspaperAdverting Feature WOMEN’S BOX LACROSSE LEAGUE HOLDS REGISTRATION DURHAM – The Durham Women’s Lacrosse League is holding its registration for both Contact and Non-contact leagues.
