PICKERING ––A Pickering
pet store clerk was robbed by a
man with a knife Tuesday evening.
A 16-year-old boy working at
Pet Valu on Kingston Road was ap-
proached by a man with a knife
around 8:30 p.m., Durham
Regional Police reported. The man
demanded money and the clerk
handed over a quantity of cash.
The man then took off on foot
and headed east. Sergeant Paul
Malik said there were no cus-
tomers in the store at the time.
The man is described as white,
18- to 20-years-old and 5-foot-10
with a medium build. He was
wearing a black hooded jacket,
black pants, a black toque, and a
black scarf covering his face.

AJAX —A significant hurdle has been cleared,
paving the way for an emergency shelter in Ajax for
abused women and children.
The Town has agreed to sell a building and land to
the Ajax-Pickering Women’s Centre for $620,000,
which is $20,500 less than the municipality had the
site appraised at.
Durham Regional Police Detective Constable
Cheryl Carter, president of the women’s centre, called
the news, “excellent, wonder-
ful, wonderful”.
The centre had been caught
in the middle of a dispute be-
tween the Town and the police
department over the site. The
police had a lease with Ajax to
use the building, at Westney
Road and Harwood Avenue,
for a station.
But, during a reorganization
several years ago, personnel
were moved to the Pickering
station, essentially leaving the
building vacant. Before the
Town would sell the building
to the women’s centre, it want-
ed compensation for rent from
the police and assurances the
police would open another station in Ajax.
Mayor Steve Parish said a tentative agreement has
been reached with the police to buy out the remaining
five years of its lease and to open a new station in
Ajax.

AJAX ––A Whitby man
faces assault and mischief
charges after a motorist was at-
tacked at a red light in what po-
lice called a case of road rage.
Provincial police said a car
and sports utility vehicle were
both eastbound on Hwy. 7 at
Westney Road at about 4:30
p.m. Wednesday when the driver
of the car, a Saturn, refused to
let a Nissan Pathfinder merge in
front of him.
When they reached a red light
the Pathfinder pulled alongside
the Saturn and the driver got out,
Whitby OPP said.
The man approached the
Saturn, smashed the driver’s
side window, breaking the side
mirror, and assaulted the 24-
year-old Brooklin driver while
he was still sitting in his car, po-
lice said.
The man went back to his ve-
hicle and drove away.
The victim, who suf-
fered minor injuries, fol-
lowed the suspect and
contacted police, who arrested
the man a short time later.
Mark Williams, 34, of
Sandford Crescent, has been
charged, OPP said.
Witnesses are asked to call
the Whitby OPP detachment at

PICKERING —Pickering councillors
are calling for changes to the provincial body
originally designed as a check against “bad
and biased planning” by municipalities.
At Monday’s
City council
meeting, council-
lors called the
Ontario
Municipal Board
(OMB) an ap-
pointed body with
no direct account-
ability to the peo-
ple of the
province, adding
instead of being
the check it was
originally intend-
ed to be, it has
grown into a body
that may overturn
sound planning
decisions and re-
shape communi-
ties in a manner
that is contrary to
the community’s
vision.
City staff esti-
mates Pickering
spends $75,000 in
an average year
on OMB related
matters and coun-
cillors said there
is an increasing
trend of develop-
ers appealing is-
sues to the OMB
before a munici-
pal council even
considers the mat-
ter.
“It’s a com-
plete subversion
of our democratic
process,” ex-
plained Ward 2
Regional
Councillor Mark
Holland. “When
the NDP formed a
government the
OMB was anti-
development and
pro-social hous-
ing. (The OMB
members) simply
reflect the views
of the government
of the day. Now
that the Tories are
in, the OMB has a
pro-development
agenda... This is
the monster
they’ve created. It
circumvents the
process of allow-
ing communities
to plan their own
future and forces
municipalities to
spend millions of
dollars just de-
fending them-
selves.”
Council unani-
mously supported
a motion urging
the Province to re-
move, or at least
radically reduce,
the role of the
OMB back to a
pure check
against bad or bi-
ased planning.
Coun. Holland
said the Province cannot expect “smart
growth” to occur in an environment where lo-
cal planning and years of public input and de-
bate can be overturned by an appointed body
that often has little knowledge of the munici-
palities whose future they are shaping.
“We can’t have smart growth when we
can’t plan our own communities,” said Coun.
Holland. “The OMB has done a tremendous
amount of damage and played a negative and
damaging role in shaping our community... It
was designed to be a check against bad or bi-
ased planning, but what it has turned into is far
beyond that.”
A copy of council’s motion is being for-
warded to Premier Mike Harris, local MPPs
Janet Ecker and Jim Flaherty, and Dalton
McGuinty, leader of the official Opposition.

It’s tough enough for the handi-
capped to get around in a society
that often puts roadblocks in the
way. But when a handicapped park-
ing space is occupied by uncaring or
lazy drivers, those who truly need
and are entitled to these spaces are
handicapped twice.
Sometimes, I will sit in my car,
usually near one of the most used
entrances a local mall and near
where handicapped parking spaces
are available. I pass the time while
waiting for my wife to return from
her shopping and have noticed many
drivers illegally using the handicap
parking spaces. I would say approx-
imately 50 per cent of the time they
use these ‘special’ parking areas to
satisfy their own needs.
They drive into a space and place
the handicap sign at the appropriate
area on their instrument panel. Then
they get out of their vehicle and
walk without the aid of a cane,
walker, etc., to the mall entrance.
Quite often they are absent from
their vehicles a long time before re-
turning. I would think, to use the
handicap-specified parking space
properly, it would have to include
the person who is handicapped. The
spaces are larger by design to allow
space for unloading or loading a
wheelchair and to make it ready for
the handicapped person.
Please use your imagination for a
moment and envision the frustration
you would feel as a handicapped
person. If you were handicapped
and you saw someone was using the
only special parking space available
to you, you would be frustrated.
So what if you carry a handicap
sign to place on your instrument
panel? Please keep in mind, this
does not give you a licence to use
the special parking space as your
own handier place to park. It is
against the law for you to park here,
unless you are parking for a handi-
capped person to either leave or
enter your vehicle.
The law for those who illegally
park in a handicapped parking space
is being changed, finally. The fine
for this used to be $500 and now has
been increased to $5,000. When the
lazy, uncaring drivers become aware
of this, the spaces should become
very available for the right people.
With the fine being higher, it
would seem a concentrated effort to
patrol these special parking facili-
ties would produce revenue to sup-
port the effort.
Selfish motorists hamper handicapped drivers
With higher fines, it’s time to use revenues to beef up patrols and crack down on offenders
Safe energy policy
best legacy for Kock
To the editor:
Re: ‘How about the Irene Kock Memorial
Wind Turbine?’Steve Houston column, Jan.
20.
I am the brother of Irene Kock, the re-
spected anti-nuclear and environment ac-
tivist who died in a car crash Dec. 31. Mr.
Houston’s column is certainly written in an
honest and generous spirit.
The desire by many to find some way to
mark the work of this formidable yet gentle
warrior is much appreciated.
Suggesting the lone Ontario Power Gen-
eration (OPG) wind turbine at the Pickering
nuclear plant be named in honour of Irene,
however, misses the mark. It would be un-
suited to Irene, even though she stood
watch, like the tall turbine, over the aging
and decrepit Pickering reactor to ensure
safety came first.
Always alert to window-dressing efforts,
Irene was never impressed by the lone 1.8-
megawatt turbine at Pickering. Its insignifi-
cant contribution to OPG’s total energy out-
put is an embarrassing .006 per cent. It is a
failed attempt at diverting our attention
from OPG’s fixation with the obsolete,
risky, and infinitely more costly nuclear re-
actors.
Fifteen per cent of Denmark’s energy
comes from wind, and that country employs
17,000 in the manufacture and export of
half the world’s wind turbines. Canada’s
total of 137 megawatts is a mere 2.25 per
cent of Germany’s 6,100 megawatts of
wind power. Irene’s vision of a nuclear-free
future included fields and rooftops with
these powerful, slow-moving propellers that
do not harm birds.
A substantial investment in conservation
was also part of her green energy vision.
Carbon taxes have been implemented in
Finland, Germany, France, Britain, Norway,
Switzerland, Holland and Denmark. Cana-
da has no effective economic measures to
discourage overuse of energy — in fact, it
does the opposite. Let’s honour the memo-
ry of my sister with an ‘Irene Kock safe en-
ergy policy’, from which we can all benefit.

It was a long time coming, but a major hurdle has been
cleared in the quest to establish a women’s shelter in west
Durham.
Ajax officials, after months of delay, agreed this week to
sell Town-owned land and pave the way for the new shelter, as-
suming rezoning is approved.
The decision comes at an opportune time as the coroner’s
inquest into the murder of Pickering resident Gillian Hadley in
June 2000 is expected to wrap up today with jury recommen-
dation. This bold step by Ajax should help the community-
based movement gain momentum as it works towards a long-
held dream.
A lot of people have put in a lot of hours in helping to es-
tablish the centre. They include Ajax and Pickering officials,
local women’s groups, Durham police and area residents. Their
efforts, with some good planning and a bit of luck, should pay
off with the development of the shelter.
The site, in the former Ajax police station at Westney Road
and Harwood Avenue, provides a perfect location and facility
to house abused women in the community.
And one is clearly needed in west Durham. Along with the
Hadley murder and suicide of her estranged husband, Ralph,
the area has dealt with a series of horrific cases in recent
months.
Last year, Marcia Harmon and her daughter, Danielle, were
bludgeoned to death in their Pickering home by their husband
and father, who died two days later in hospital.
Two other cases are currently before the courts in which a
spouse is accused of horrendous crimes against their mates.
For better or worse, the Hadley case shone a spotlight on the
issue of domestic abuse and prompted a groundswell of sup-
port and activity to establish this shelter.
This decision taken by Ajax shows, despite early delays, it
is committed to providing long-term solutions. Other levels of
government have also shown support for the plan, which
should help move it along.
Certainly, shelters provide important safe havens for bat-
tered women and their children. But along with providing
bricks and mortar, the community must also examine educa-
tional and awareness initiatives to combat spousal abuse, and
follow up on recent commitments by Ajax and Pickering politi-
cians to lobby Durham Regional Police for the creation of a
dedicated domestic violence unit.
We may never eliminate domestic abuse, but ongoing efforts
in the community can certainly mitigate the frequency and
severity of it and, perhaps, avoid its worst outcome.

DURHAM ––A 39-year-old Ajax
woman is in a Toronto hospital follow-
ing a head-on crash on Victoria Street in
Whitby Tuesday night.
Shortly after 7 p.m., an Ajax couple
and their 10-year-old daughter were
eastbound in a Dodge Caravan on
Victoria Street near Lynde Shores
Conservation Area, Durham Regional
Police report. Their van collided head-
on with a Volkswagen travelling west.
The driver of the Volkswagen and the
Ajax family were taken to Ajax-

The child had bruises and a sprained
wrist, police said. The woman was trans-
ferred to Sunnybrook Health Sciences

treated and released. Wayne Leonard

We’re online at durhamregion.com“I’m pleased that we’ve
reached agreement on a fair
purchase price and resolved
the issues in this complicated
land-sale agreement,” he said.
“Council supports the con-
cept of a women’s shelter in
Ajax. There’s no question a
shelter is needed in west
Durham, but council had a re-
sponsibility to the taxpayers
to ensure the site is appropri-
ate, and if so, that the Town
received a fair price for the
land, compensation for the
loss of lease income, and ful-
filment of a promise for a po-
lice station in Ajax.”
Det. Const. Carter said the
dispute was between the
Town and the police depart-
ment. “The issues didn’t con-
cern the women’s centre.
Those are things they had to
iron out.”
The 25-bed shelter will be
the first of its kind in west
Durham, she added.
The facility, which is about
7,000 square feet, must un-
dergo extensive interior reno-
vations, and also requires a
7,000-sq.-ft. addition. She
said the earliest the facility
could open is this December.
“We can’t bid for tender
until we have the building,”
she added. “It depends on
who we get for the renova-
tions and addition.”
It’s going to cost $2.3 mil-
lion to buy and renovate the
building, with the Ministry of
Community and Social
Services contributing $2.175
million.

our estimate. The community
has to help us,” Det. Const.
Carter said.
The Province will also pro-
vide an additional $600,000
towards the operating budget
of $850,000 a year, leaving
the centre to come up with the
rest.
“Every year, we’ll have to
fund-raise to meet our operat-
ing budget,” she said.
Before the sale is finalized,
however, the centre has to go
through the normal planning
process, including a rezoning,
and that includes holding an
open house, expected later
this month.
“If we don’t get the zon-
ing, we don’t want the build-
ing,” Det. Const. Carter said.
June 5 is the closing date,
pending the rezoning.
“If nobody appeals, we’re
off and running. God knows
we need it,” she noted.
The provincial government
told her to get moving “or
that’s it and they’ll move on.
They want to see it up and
running.”
Assuming the normal plan-
ning process, including ap-
peal periods, the centre will
know if the rezoning is ap-
proved by mid-May.
“That’s when we’ll truly
celebrate,” she said.
For the first time in
Ontario, a pilot project will
see a specially-trained police
officer stationed at the shelter.
“The chief said if it’s need-
ed and we’re too busy, he’d
allocate more officers.”

Pickering, OPG ink fire services deal
Fire services agreement
formalizes ‘what we’ve
been doing for years’
BY MARTIN DERBYSHIRE
Staff Writer
PICKERING —The City and
Ontario Power Generation (OPG)
inked a new agreement last month,
formalizing a co-operative and collab-
orative relationship between
Pickering fire services and the local
nuclear plant.
“For years we’ve worked very
closely, co-operating with Pickering
Fire Services,” said Pat O’Brien,
manager of public affairs at the
Pickering Nuclear Generating
Station. “Now we’ve formalized that
process.”
Details of the agreement include
annual fire safety inspections of the
nuclear plant by Pickering Fire
Services, fire drills throughout the
year, advanced training for both fire-
fighters and OPG staff, and the hiring
of a new emergency response co-ordi-
nator for the city.
Part of the specialized training be-
gins this year when OPG staff and
firefighters participate in advanced in-
cidental command training at the
Department of National Defence fire
school at Base Borden.
OPG will cover the annual costs of
all the training, inspections, drills and
salary of the emergency response co-
ordinator, all expected to exceed
$200,000.
“Nuclear plants are different than
other industries,” said Mr. O’Brien.
“We recognize that for the safety of
our employees, the city and ourselves,
specialized training is needed.”
“This is exciting for (OPG) and
us,” said Pickering Fire Chief Bill
Douglas. “It represents an effective
fire safety plan, I’m very pleased we
got this done.”
OPG will also share fire safety and
prevention equipment and provide as-
sistance in the event of a major inci-
dent outside the plant.
“We’ve been here for 30 years and
always co-operated with the City, but
never set anything out on paper. This
agreement spells out in a positive way
what we’ve been doing for years and I
think we’d both agree it’s been a long
time coming,” said Mr. O’Brien. “It
meets the City’s needs and our needs
and I hope it will be undertaken in
other communities with nuclear facil-
ities.”
Veridian Connections Update:
Proposed Adjustment to Electricity Distribution Rates
To: Our Valued Customers in Ajax, Pickering, Clarington and Uxbridge.
I’m writing to advise you of a proposed adjustment to Veridian Connections’ rates for electricity distribution services.
A request for approval of this rate change has been submitted to the Ontario Energy Board. If authorized, new
distribution rates will take effect on March 1, 2002.
Why Are Rates Being Adjusted?
This rate adjustment is not unique to Veridian Connections. It affects most of Ontario’s electricity distributors, and is
driven by government legislation that has changed our businesses from non-profit operations to commercial
enterprises.
While a commercial orientation for our business will promote greater efficiencies, it also introduces new costs. For
example, we must now make payments equivalent to corporate income taxes - payments that will be used by the
provincial government to retire the debt of the former Ontario Hydro.
These new taxes account for over sixty percent of our proposed rate adjustment. The balance of the rate increase is
required to establish a commercially viable business.
How Will It Affect You?
The impact of the rate adjustment will vary by customer type and consumption level. The monthly bill for a typical
residential customer using 1,000 kWh’s of electricity will increase from $91.69 to $98.14. This represents an increase
of about 7% on the total electricity bill.
Full details of the proposed new rates can be viewed on-line at www.veridian.on.ca, or in person at 55 Taunton Road
East in Ajax.
Our Commitment To You
While our business in changing, our focus remains the same. We are committed to providing our customers with the
highest standard of service, at competitive distribution rates. And, as we are locally owned and operated, you can
count on us to continue our tradition of support to the communities that we serve.
Yours truly,
John Wiersma

DURHAM ––Negotiations on the creation of
an international energy research and development
facility, possibly to be built in Durham, continued
in Tokyo late last month.
On Jan. 22 and 23 delegations from Canada,
the European Union, Japan and the Russian
Federation met for the second in a series of nego-
tiation meetings expected to lead to an interna-
tional agreement on the location and construction
of ITER –– International Thermonuclear
Experimental Reactor.
In June 2001, Canada submitted a bid to host
ITER, a $12-billion collaborative fusion research
project at a site in Clarington beside the
Darlington Generating Station and St. Mary’s
Cement.
At the negotiations, Canada reported the first
formal review of the ITER project by the
Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission will occur
in March as part of its licensing process.
Other site offers are under consideration from
the European Union and Japan. At the negotia-
tions the European Union reported the French
minister asked for France’s proposal for a site in
Cadarache, France to be taken into account. A
study to analyze the possibility of Spain as a site
is also being conducted.
Japan reported on discussions at the Council
on Science and Technology Policy (CSTP), a
body chaired by Prime Minister Junichiro
Koizumi.
The Japanese participation in the ITER Project
is desirable and the council believes hosting
ITER is meaningful, said Atsuko Toyama, minis-
ter of science and technology. The Japanese gov-
ernment is expected to make its final decision on
whether to continue to pursue the ITER project
by the end of February.
Russia reported ITER continues as one of its
highest priorities.
The next negotiation meeting is scheduled for
March 19 and 20 in Moscow.

DURHAM —Public
school board trustees gener-
ally agree collecting criminal
background checks of em-
ployees will be time-con-
suming and involve a lot of
paperwork.
But at Monday’s Durham
District School Board stand-
ing committee meeting, there
was no consensus on the val-
ue of doing so.
Education director Grant
Yeo reminded trustees the
clock is ticking on about
6,500 board employees who
must, by July 31, 2003, pro-
vide a criminal background
check to the board.
“We’re talking about
gathering information in a
quantity we have never gath-
ered it before,” he said.
The board has required
background checks as a con-
dition of employment for
about eight years.
In addition to background
checks, Ontario Regulation
521, which took effect last
month, requires yearly of-
fence declarations from em-
ployees to fill in any gaps in
the time since the back-
ground check.
The regulation also ap-
plies to board service
providers and individuals
“who come into direct con-
tact with pupils on a regular
basis,” states the provincial
government act.
“I think that this is a case
of a regulation that has pro-
ceeded in spite of all the con-
cerns expressed,” said Brock-
Uxbridge Trustee Nancy
Loraine. “I look at this and I
think, will this give us a false
sense of security? The time
and effort and all of the infra-
structure that is going to be
put in place... are just mind-
boggling.”
She was told there is no
money in the education fund-
ing formula for the initiative
and that the employees them-
selves are expected to bear
the cost of $20 for an em-
ployee background check
from Durham Regional
Police.
Oshawa Trustee Kathleen
Hopper wondered how the
board is to respond to the in-
formation collected.
“At what point do you
find something that’s so of-
fensive that the person can’t
be employed by the board?”
she asked.
Mr. Yeo said that was the
crux of the issue but could
not answer the question.
“Certainly that’s something
for the Ontario Public School
Boards’ Association,” he
replied, noting the informa-
tion in a background check
could be several years old.
Others supported the reg-
ulation. Oshawa Trustee
Susan Shetler said it was
long overdue and shouldn’t
be a big problem for employ-
ees.
“I would like to think that
our teachers or service
providers would like to do
this,” she said.
“I’m sure 99 per cent will
come back with no record,”
said Scugog Trustee Martin
Demmers.
Shelley Page, Durham
president of the Ontario
Secondary School Teachers’
Federation, said the union
would not be covering the
cost of the checks.
“It’s not the union’s busi-
ness to police its members,”
she said. “And, in fact, when
we’re enrolled in the college
of teachers already, and
we’re members of profes-
sional organizations already,
and the board already seeks
background checks, this is
more of the government
passing laws and policies that
are already being covered in
schools.”

Fatal crash yields life to those receiving organs
BY STEPHEN SHAW
Staff Writer
DURHAM ––In life, Krista Lee
Shea was best known among family
members for her giving nature.
Therefore, it is only fitting in death
the 20-year-old local woman has
given the ultimate gift to a group of
strangers.
Ms. Shea, of Thomas Street in
Oshawa, died Saturday of injuries
suffered in a collision last Thursday,
the region’s first traffic fatality this
year.
And while her family mourns
the tragedy, Valerie Shea said they
are comforted knowing her daugh-
ter’s death has given new life to oth-
ers. Ms. Shea’s kidneys, liver and
pancreas cells were donated to three
recipients Saturday, said her griev-
ing mother.
“Krista was always there for oth-
er people. She gave everything she
had of herself to her family. We’re
devastated but it is very consoling to
know that, even in death, she is still
giving,” said Valerie Shea, 48, of
Courtice.
Her daughter’s liver was trans-
planted to an elderly woman; a mid-
dle-aged man was the recipient of
one kidney, while a woman benefit-
ed from the other.
Krista was headed to work in
Ajax when she lost control of her
westbound 1991 Chevrolet Lumina
on Phillip Murray Avenue in south
Oshawa and was ‘T-boned’ by an
eastbound pickup truck at 6:40 a.m.
She suffered massive trauma and
remained on life support at
Sunnybrook Health Sciences
Centre until the organ transplants
were arranged.
The unidentified driver of the
pickup truck suffered minor injuries
in the crash.
Sergeant Paul Malik, police
spokesman, said the probe into the
collision is continuing, but charges
are not anticipated. Investigators be-
lieve road conditions may have
played a role in the accident and are
asking any witnesses come forward
and call officers at 905-579-1520
ext. 5225 or 5227.
Ms. Shea, a graduate of Courtice
High School, was in her fourth and
final year of an apprenticeship as a
general machinist and was complet-
ing studies at the Durham College
campus in Whitby, her mother says.
Known as a “chatter-box” to
family and friends, Ms. Shea had a
cheerful, outgoing personality.
“She was just a beautiful girl, so
vivacious and loving,” Valerie Shea
said.
“When she walked into a room
the whole room would just light
up.”

Buffalo Nickel bison are

accurate term for what North
Americans refer to as buffalo.
Buffalo Nickel bison are ranch-
raised and grain finished to be
consistently tender and
delicious. Bison are not an
endangered species. Today there
are approximately 300,000
bison across North America.
Nickel bison is a premium
grade meat with a naturally
clean, non-gamy taste. Like a
fine beef steak but even more
tender and more delicious.
Much like swordfish or a fine
wine, bison is a more exotic

Great outdoors doggone fun
BY LESLIE JENNINGS
Special to the News Advertiser
“No matter what,” said
Genevieve Dooley, the leader of
our afternoon dogsledding ex-
cursion, “never let go of your
sled.” Those words, fresh from
our orientation, came back to
me in a flash as my team of six
boisterous Alaskan sled dogs
suddenly bolted. I’d’ been
standing nonchalantly on the
snow anchor waiting for every-
one to finish lunch, and the next
thing I knew I was jerked off my
feet, dragged from the waist
down with legs flying behind
me, holding onto the handle of
the sled for dear life.
“Woooooaaaaahhhh!” I
called out in my most calm yet
assertive voice, trying to brake
with my feet. I’m not sure if the
dogs would have eventually fol-
lowed my command, because
Genevieve thankfully pulled up
beside me and was able to halt
the runaways. “You looked just
like a stunt woman!” said my
eight-year-old son Vaughn
proudly.
Driving a dogsled
Although initially apprehen-
sive, my confidence in driving
the team increased as I devel-
oped a sense of rhythm and bal-
ance. The two-hour jaunt went
by quickly in a blaze of beauti-
ful countryside and falling
snow. Riding in the basket of the
sled got chilly after awhile, but
driving was far more physical
than I had expected. As we re-
turned, an exhilarated Vaughn
came running up to greet me.
“Did you see me driving?”
Genevieve, a competitive
dogsledder, had allowed him to
drive the team, a privilege usu-
ally reserved for those a mini-
mum of 10 years old.
Genevieve showed us how to
unhitch the dogs and march
them on their hind legs to their
55-gallon straw-filled barrels in
the yard. We said “so long” to
250 of the nicest Alaskans you’d
ever want to meet and headed to
our lodging, Voyageur Quest
Algonquin Log Cabin (near
South River, on Smythe Lake,
about eight kilometres from
Algonquin Park).
As we entered the cabin, gas
lamps and candlelight cast a
warm glow and a roaring fire in
the striking dual-sided field-
stone hearth blazed. We felt like
we’d slipped through the cracks
of time and it was love at first
sight for the entire family.
Staying in a log cabin, in the
woods, in winter, with no elec-
tricity, heated by wood and with
the comforts and hospitality of a
bygone era spoke to a romance
all of us connected to.
Owner of Voyageur Quest,
34-year-old John Langford, has
chosen his staff well. The two
guides who hosted our week-
end, 23-year-old Burk’s Falls
native son Brian Pink and 28-
year-old Torontonian Sam Start
stoked the fires, lit the lamps,
cooked delicious meals, man-
aged the cabin and guided us
through two days of winter
backwoods activities. With im-
peccable timing, meals ap-
peared, Algonquin lore was
shared, and we were left to relax
or encouraged to hustle as cir-
cumstance directed.
Back-country skiing
Although 10-year-old Bryn
and my 46-year-old spouse
were in their element back-
country skiing, hammering over
fallen logs and through brush on
cross-country skis was a bit too
demanding for the novices
(Vaughn, Niamh and me.) We
were far more content to ski
across frozen Smythe Lake
(known locally as Surprise
Lake).
On our final day, Brian and
Aussie Scott Burgess took the
whole family snowshoeing on a
four-km trail that included some
steep assents, spectacular land-
scapes and a million-dollar view
of Smythe Lake. The hike took
about three hours and presented
a considerable physical chal-
lenge for the adults, not to men-
tion the kids.
Snowshoes were too difficult
for our five-year-old, who was
light enough to walk on top of
the snow anyway and we carried
a plastic sled along with us so
that Niamh could take a break
on the flats of the trail. The boys
particularly enjoyed Brian’s
commentary on interesting for-
est flora and fauna.
Break from the TV
When it was time to leave the
snow and head back to the grey
city, Niamh informed me she
wanted to move to the cabin for-
ever. After a weekend when
prime-time viewing had been
limited to watching the antics of
the redpoll finches and hairy
woodpeckers at the bird feeders,
my son Vaughn told us, “it’s
good to get away from the TV
sometimes, you know.”
The package that we had en-
joyed, ‘footsteps of the pio-
neers’ provided an opportunity
to experience activities that I
would never have had the confi-
dence to do with my kids alone.

Valentines Day is for sweethearts.
Already we have been getting pictures
of your sweethearts being brought in
for our snap shot cakes. All look so
sweet and I know there will be tears
flowing on some. I even joined in with
our staff when they said aahh on
seeing them.
Nothing says I love you like a special
picture of your sweetheart reproduced
on our cakes amidst a flowing
background of hearts and flowers.
Some ideas include writing a poem or
love letter on any one of a number of
software programs that have beautiful
graphics, running it off and bringing it in
to us. We will reproduce it exactly as it
is on the page and adjust the size to fit
the cake of your choice (including our
heart shaped cake) in whatever colour
is on the original.
What about a cake for two? Our special
sweetheart cake is the one for you. It’s
also in the shape of a heart and it’s
about 6” wide. It can either have all
vanilla soft serve with strawberries and
whipped cream in the center or all
chocolate soft serve with cookie crunch
and fudge in the center. It has a special
design on the top for sweethearts and
it’s bordered in our rich vanilla whipped
topping.
Of course, we also have our regular
cakes with over 50 designs for
Valentines Day that you can choose
from right out of our display freezers.
We will personalize them while you
wait. Most popular expression? You
guessed it ... I LOVE YOU. Yes we can
custom design one for you and have it
ready in 24 hours. Our 8” cake serves
8-10, our Valentine heart cake serves
10-12 and our 10” cake serves 12-16.
For your big gatherings, our sheet cake
serves 20-24. Of course having enough
for seconds or dessert for the next day
will make you very popular with the
whole family. Sweetheart cakes start at

PICKERING —The Pickering Boyer Pon-
tiac Panthers finished the regular-season sched-
ule on a high note Wednesday by trouncing the
Wexford Raiders 8-4 at the Pickering Recre-
ation Complex.
The makeup contest from a previously can-
celled game was essentially a meaningless af-
fair for both squads as Wexford had already
locked up first place in the OHA Ontario
Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League South
Conference standings and the Panthers were re-
signed to fifth place after the Thornhill Rattlers
claimed fourth spot by beating Oshawa Tues-
day. Pickering will play the Rattlers in the first-
round, best-of-seven playoff series.
The game, however, wasn’t meaningless to
Panthers’ team captain Garett Winder who had
a four-point night (two goals, two assists) to
reach the 40-goal plateau and finish the season
with 73 points.
Pickering led 3-2 in the first period and then
struck for five goals in the second. Wexford
scored the only goal of the final period.
Also scoring were Mike Hanna with two,
Dan Schofield, Brent Chandler,
Ryan Taylor and Mitch Hugli.
Assisting were Hanna with three, Schofield and
Kyle Aitken,each with two,Kevin Rogers,Alex
Pavloski, Colin Jennings, Chris Anderson,
Chandler and Sean Bradley.
The Panthers open the playoffs in Thornhill
tomorrow (Saturday) at 7 p.m. Game 2 reverts
to the Pickering Recreation Complex on Sun-
day at 7 p.m. for a tentatively scheduled contest.
Game three is in Thornhill Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
No time or date was set for game four at the
News Advertiser’s deadline Thursday.

Durham West atoms lose
close game to Chiefs,
tie Brampton
DURHAM —The Durham West
Lightning atom ‘AA’ girls posted a tie
and a loss in two league games last
weekend.
The Lightning played to a 2-2 draw
with the Brampton Canadettes Sunday,
using two last-minute goals with their
goaltender on the bench to knot the
score.
Brampton scored in the first and
second periods to carry a 2-0 lead into
the final frame. The Lightning had a
chance to tie the game in the first peri-
od when forward Danielle Boudreau
was awarded a penalty shot after being
hooked from behind on a breakaway.
With their goaltender pulled in
favour of an extra attacker, Durham
West’s Kaitlyn Hill scored on a pass
from Brooke Sawyer to narrow the
score to 2-1 with 38 seconds left. With
only 14 seconds remaining, Sawyer
got another assist, passing to forward
Natalie Spooner who rifled a shot
through a maze of players into the top
corner.
Last Saturday, the Lightning
dropped their first league game of the
season, 1-0 to the Mississauga Chiefs
in a game that featured end-to-end ac-
tion. Mississauga scored the game
winner late in the second period on a
rebound after Kim Caggiula made
three big saves in a row. Spooner made
a valiant attempt to tie the score with
one second left in the game but was
robbed by the Chiefs goalie.
The atoms boast a record of 17-1-3
in league play, 5-0-2 in tournament
play and 3-0-0 in exhibition action.
Other team members are Kailey
Chappell, Trisha Egberts, Layne Far-

Unitarians have been accused of keeping their liberal religious message a secret. In fact we
seem to have an aversion to evangelizing our core beliefs of individual freedom and
responsibility in regligious matters.
Well, what would we sound like if we were to undertake a more assertive style? Come out and
join us as Rev. Jack lifts up Unitarianism in Canada with evangelistic fervour.
