What’s so funny?
AJAX ––The ‘kids tyme’program at the Mill Street Community Centre in Ajax provides the per-
fect setting for youngsters ages three to five to share fun times and socialize in a friendly, sup-
portive setting. The 10-week program allows children to explore their creativity through arts and
crafts and other pursuits. Here, friends Alex Capizzo and Mikayla Tafertshofer share a hearty
laugh at Thursday’s session.

Pickering
ready to
report on
Johnson
probe
BY MARTIN DERBYSHIRE

PICKERING —The City’s so-
licitor will report to councillors this
week the results of his investigation
into the actions of Rick Johnson at
his north Pickering property.
The Ward 3 regional councillor,
his wife, and the City of Pickering
are currently named in a lawsuit
filed by the Township of Uxbridge,
seeking $1 million in damages and
asking the Johnsons to restore the
property to its original condition.
Coun. Johnson cleared a road to his
landlocked piece of rural property
and cut down trees along the
Uxbridge/Pickering border to cre-
ate a driveway.

Students improve test scores
But amid latest
standardized test
results, Ecker admits
marks could be better
BY MIKE RUTA

DURHAM —Provincial test
results of grades 3 and 6 students
released Friday show “tangible im-
provements in student learning and
achievement”, says Janet Ecker
However, the education minis-
ter also conceded, “We’re not
where we should be yet.”
Ontario Grade 6 test scores are
up across the board compared to
last year’s numbers, while Grade 3
scores remained roughly the same,
according to the Province’s Educa-
tion Quality and Accountability
Office (EQAO).
The Education Ministry’s
arm’s-length testing agency ad-
ministered the reading, writing and
math test to the students last May.
Roughly 12,300 pupils in
Durham’s Catholic and public
school boards wrote the test, al-
though board results here are not
yet available.
Provincial results show fifty-
five per cent of Ontario’s Grade 6
English-language students met or
exceeded Level 3 (equivalent to a
score of between 70 and 79 per
cent) in the reading portion of the
2001 test, compared to 50 per cent
in last year’s assessment. There
was also a five percentage-point
jump in the writing score, or 53
per cent this year compared to 48
per cent in 2000. Meanwhile, 54
per cent of the Grade 6 pupils met
or surpassed the standard in math,
three points better than last year.
The Grade 3 results were virtu-
ally unchanged from a year ago:
the 49-per cent success rate in
reading and 52 per cent in writing
are identical, while 61 per cent of
students met or surpassed the
provincial standard in math, up
four per cent from last year.
The EQAO began testing
grades 3 and 6 students in 1999. In

Fighting influenza
PICKERING –– Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge MPP Janet Ecker rolled
up her sleeve Friday and took a shot to ward off the flu during a visit
to a local pharmacy to promote the provincial government’s under-
writing of free flu vaccines for Ontarians. Here, Ms. Ecker is given her
needle by registered nurse Christine Osborne as Shopper’s Drug Mart
pharmacist Rahim Suleman looks on. Mr. Suleman’s Steeple Hill drug
store is hosting a free flu shot clinic Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 4-8 p.m.

PICKERING —Public
board planners are overlooking
some key points in their proposal
to close Valley View Public
School, more than 100 people
heard at a meeting in the ham-
let’s community centre Tuesday
night.
Greenwood’s only school is
one of eight slated for closure in
the first draft of the Durham Dis-
trict School Board’s accommo-
dation plan, unveiled two weeks
ago and to be approved in De-
cember.
Residents have formed a save
our school committee and are
vowing to put up a determined
fight to prevent the closure of the
facility where former Canadian
prime minister John Diefenbaker
once went to school. The 20-plus
person committee is canvassing
the community for support, has
contacted the board’s 11 trustees
and other elected officials, has
started a petition sporting more
than 200 signatures, and hopes to
meet with Education Minister
and Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge
MPP Janet Ecker.
“We will present a strong and
united opposition to this propos-
al,” said committee member
Karen Wianecki. “We will send a
strong message that we are not
the route of least resistance. We
will, above all else, insist that our
children be allowed to continue
to receive the education we have
chosen for them and the one we
as parents believe they deserve.”
She challenged the board’s
reason for proposing the school
be closed, namely because its en-
rolment is declining. She said
two special-education classes
were moved from the school last
year, and noted attendance also
fell when the board changed the
school’s catchment area, which
was to have originally included
the Nottingham subdivision.
She said the board’s planners
are not thinking down the road in
considering only subdivision ap-
plications that have received final
approval in the accommodation
plan. With Hwy. 407’s arrival in
the area of Valley View will come
growth and students, Ms. Wia-
necki argued. She also criticized
the proposal to send Valley View
students to Cadarackque or
Claremont public schools, noting
the former is already overcrowd-
ed and has 11 portables.
The community plans to pre-
sent the board with three options
to keep the school open. They
will suggest the board revise the
school boundaries, accommo-
date students from overcrowded
schools at Valley View, or “reju-
venate” the school with a perma-
nent addition.
“This is only the beginning,”
said committee member Nicole
Hale.

The suit claims that if the
City of Pickering authorized
the work, it did so without
consulting the Town of
Uxbridge and was therefore
not in a position to give the
go-ahead.
Tom Quinn, Pickering’s
chief administrative officer,
has maintained the City did
not give permission, while
Coun. Johnson has said Mr.
Quinn gave the OK.
The confidential solici-
tor’s report will be discussed
by councillors at an in-cam-
era meeting Monday night
prior to council, although any
decisions will have to be ap-
proved in the public forum.
“I expect some actions to
be taken by the City and they
will have to be ratified in the
public meeting,” said Re-
gional Councillor Maurice
Brenner. “There are really
only three options. The City
can take legal action against
(Coun. Johnson), require him
to restore the property (to its
original state), or do noth-
ing,” he said, adding he felt
the last choice “is not an op-
tion”.
Coun. Johnson will not be
allowed to attend the in-cam-
era meeting nor will he be
able to vote on any decisions
at council.
As of Wednesday, City
clerk Bruce Taylor said he
had received six requests
from the public to make dep-
utations on the issue Monday
night before council reaches
a decision.
three years, overall Grade 3
scores have risen an aver-
age of roughly four points,
while Grade 6 results are
up an average of seven.
In a teleconference in-
terview Friday, Ms. Ecker
suggested improving stu-
dent achievement will take
time and is not a matter of
“snapping a finger” and
making it happen.
“We need to have as
many students as possible
meeting the provincial
standard,” she said. “We
deliberately set a high stan-
dard and the job now is to
work with schools to meet
those standards.”
Ms. Ecker said she
agreed with an EQAO rec-
ommendation that calls for
a review of the grades 3
and 6 data over the last four
years “to review the effec-
tiveness of the
provincewide implementa-
tion of the curriculum.
“Part of the plan has al-
ways been to take a step
back and say, ‘what do we
need to do’,” she said, de-
fending the curriculum as
“the right curriculum”.
The EQAO intends to
release school board results
Tuesday. School boards
then have until mid-De-
cember to release school-
by-school results in their
jurisdictions.
“Our plan is to do it ear-
lier in December... proba-
bly within the first week,
that’s what we’re aiming
for,” said Andrea Pidwer-
becki, Durham District
School Board spokesman.
Meanwhile the Durham
Catholic District School
Board plans to release its
school results at its Nov. 12
meeting.
As for the EQAO’s
Grade 10 test, cancelled in
mid-October after parts of
the exam were posted on
the Internet, the agency
now says it will likely an-
nounce new test dates next
week.

George Vanderkuur is a scientist at heart
and a teacher and Principal to the students at
Durham Secondary Academy.
A Graduate of the Royal Military College
in Kingston with a degree in Physics from
Carlton University, George taught high school
in the Ottawa area for 6 years.
But in 1969, when the Ontario Science
Centre opened he took a position as a
teacher/demonstrator for the next 10 years.
“It was a very enjoyable job,” says
George. “I taught school children from all over
and travelled to the U.S. and Asia conducting
workshops for the Centre.”
In 1980 he was promoted to Chief
Scientist and spent the next 5 years developing
exhibits.
“I really loved the creativity of designing
the exhibits,” says George. “As well as the
interaction with all of the staff and visitors.”
After his time with the Science Centre
George began work with the Premier's Council
Technology Fund coordinating the evaluation
of the seven different Centres of Excellence
across the province with teams of scientists
from many countries conducting research.
But as life comes full circle, George went
back to teaching and consulting for the Toronto
District School Board including his participa-
tion in the founding of the Ursula Franklin
Academy.
He then retired but that was short lived
when he starting writing text books and had the
desire to work part time as a science teacher.
During this time the opportunity came up
at the Durham Secondary Academy where he
took the position of Principal at the private
school in Ajax.
“The school fits an important need for
high school students,” says George. “The class-
es are no larger that eight and the highly quali-
fied teachers give them lots of attention and
encouragement.”
Each semester is 10 weeks long and they
can be started 4 times a year. Next term regis-
tration starts the week of November 13th. The
school is located at 520 Westney rd. S. in Ajax.

A little truth would
go a long way
To the editor:
Reality works sort of like this:
In order to have understanding there
has to be truth.
If the truth is distorted, understanding
becomes distorted.
If there is no truth, there is no under-
standing and therefore no true concept of
reality.
No true democracy can exist if truth is
withheld from the same grassroots de-
mographics that elect governments. The
United States has historically hidden or
distorted various truths from its citizens.
Therefore, the people of the U.S. have
no true concept of what is reality.
Let us hope that one day the citizens
of the world can unite and form a better
understanding of exactly what the nature
of the current Middle East conflict is,
and let us hope one day the American
government will stop the cloak of mis-
conception.

The public school board’s system-
wide accommodation plan is a logical
step towards addressing pupil place
needs in local communities, based on
the funding formula established by the
Province.
But remember, the plan is only in
draft form right now. If you think it’s
a done deal, I would suggest you re-
call three years ago when the board
went through this process for the first
time: trustees voted down the first
plan after an outcry in Oshawa over
six planned school closures there.
This time eight schools are slated
for closure and several communities
are vowing to fight the decision, as the
people of Greenwood are doing for
Valley View Public School. At a meet-
ing Tuesday night, a strong case was
presented for keeping that school
open and Pickering’s trustees are
heartily on side.
However, this is a numbers game
and the Province sets the rules. Home-
town pride doesn’t count for much
here. Strike that — it means nothing.
“The funding formula
provincewide does not recognize the
values of small communities, small
schools,” says Jack Massie, the
Durham District School Board’s facil-
ities superintendent.
To maximize provincial grants for
new pupil places, he said the board
has to maximize the utilization of
space in its existing buildings. Valley
View has a capacity for 189 students,
but only 141 pupils at present and four
classrooms not in use. That means
Valley View, sadly, is a liability to the
board. That is not to say Valley View
is failing as a school. There just aren’t
enough students right now.
According to an Education Min-
istry fact sheet on the pupil accommo-
dation grant, “boards qualify for fund-
ing for new pupil places when they
can demonstrate that they have used
all their permanent existing school
buildings effectively and cannot ac-
commodate increased enrolment
without additional space.”
The draft accommodation plan
does this by proposing the closure of
schools that are below their ministry-
rated capacity, those with falling en-
rolment, and by consolidating over-
crowded school populations. In the
last case, I’m referring to the plan to
use Exeter High School in Ajax to ac-
commodate elementary students from
two schools.
The bottom line is the board has to
close schools, freeing up pupil places
that generate dollars to build new
schools where they are needed. In the
draft plan, Mr. Massie says the pro-
posed closures would mean an addi-
tional $1.57 million per year for new
schools.
That’s how the system works. And
while school board officials often say
the accommodation funding formula
has resulted in a tremendous building
boom in recent years, it’s also why a
school like Valley View, cherished as a
perfect fit for its community, is on the
closure list.
It’s the system, not board, that penalizes little schools
By closing underutilized facilities, public trustees free up valuable money for new space across Durham
They’ve merrily tried all manner of personal and business tax
cuts, they’ve dropped spending on all the non-essentials and they’ve
watched and applauded as the Bank of Canada (following the U.S.
Federal Reserve Board) has slashed the prime rate month after
month.
Now it’s time for our federal and provincial finance ministers,
Paul Martin and Jim Flaherty respectively, to do something that will
have a real impact. The pair can even dress up as Santa Claus (Mr.
Martin) and his very special elf (Mr. Flaherty) if they like. Hal-
loween was just a few days ago after all, and as they say... Christ-
mas is coming. Please, please, please lower the dreaded goods and
services tax and the provincial sales tax. Only Mr. Martin and Mr.
Flaherty have it in their power (with the blessings of their bosses of
course) to take this drastic course of action, but we urge them in the
strongest terms to take the plunge.
As we deal with the daily drudgery of layoffs in all manner of
businesses and the latest doom and gloom on the terrorist and war
front, Canadians could use a little relief.
A cut to the GST and PST would have a direct and immediate
impact on our purchasing power. Yes, it would bring fewer dollars
into government treasuries, but with retailers cringing at the thought
of the worst Christmas shopping season in at least a decade, it’s
time for action. At a bare minimum, the PST and GST need a three-
point slash each, maybe more if our finance ministers are daring.
In Ontario, where the Tories have bragged at having the lowest
provincial income tax rate of all provinces, even besting Alberta,
there is work to be done. After all,Alberta, which to be fair lives off
its vast oil reserves, doesn’t even have a PST. In the provincial ri-
valry to take the least in taxes from its citizens, the Tories have a
way to go.
Why cut the GST and PST? To boost consumer spending of
course, to encourage consumption, to keep people employed, to
keep small businesses afloat. If the tax cuts have the desired effect,
it’s possible the jump in spending and the tax revenue raised might
even make up for the amount of tax chopped.
There are also those taxpaying workers to consider. These em-
ployees who’d be kept on would otherwise be forced to collect em-
ployment insurance — and be unable to purchase goods in the
amount they did while employed.
It’s not an easy decision, but Mr. Flaherty and Mr. Martin are
huddling right now with their experts. Let’s hope they are looking
hard at PST and GST cuts as they present budgets in the next
month.
Time for the
kindest cut of all
With Christmas coming, eliminate PST and
GST – jobs, business, economy depend on it

McTeague’s
bill deemed
votable
DURHAM —Dan McTeague’s
private member’s bill to prevent the
use of an efficiency defence argument
before the Competition Tribunal in an
attempted merger that would, in ef-
fect, create a monopoly, has been
deemed votable by a House of Com-
mons subcommittee.
“The efficiency argument cannot
be used to get a merger approved that
would give the merging parties com-
plete market dominance and the con-
sumer nothing to show for it,” he said.
“The courts have defended the princi-
ple of the Competition Act and Bill C-
248 seeks to entrench that view into
statute.”
The bill now goes to House of
Commons for readings.

Positive Changes
Positive Change Hypnosis
My name is Carol Hooper. I do companion care for older
adults.
Two years ago my size dropped from a baggy XXL to a
petite size six. I shed 95 pounds without dieting! I’ve kept
my weight off ever since. It’s been effortless! This is my
real-life story. I will reveal how I did it. Why I’m
convinced my success is permanent. Why I think you can
do it too.
Pain & Unhappiness
I was overweight nearly my entire life. Everything
revolved around food. I was obsessed. I turned to food for
comfort. It was my support when I was sad, tired or happy.
I couldn’t control it. I spent my life living to eat.
Carrying around an extra 95 pounds is a lot of work. I
was always tired. One or two naps a day was my routine. I
looked for excuses to stay home. I was hiding. There’s no
way I could be happy like that. I was heavy, miserable and
uncomfortable.
My weight embarrassed me. I tried everything to lose
my weight. I suffered through pre-packaged food and
chalky shakes. I counted, weighed, measured and starved.
I’ve done all the weird diets. The grapefruit, high protein,
low fat, to name a few. Any crazy diet you can think of, I
tried it. Diets don’t work.
I lost my weight once with medication. I gained it all
back plus 70 pounds.
Dramatic Results
When my weight exceeded my limit, I was desperate.
I discovered Positive Changes Hypnosis on WNIS talk
radio. They said I could have a free hypnosis screening.
I was impressed right off the bat. The staff is friendly
and caring. I expected a grueling sales pitch. There was
none. The screening was fun and informative. There was
no pressure. No need to sign a contract. The folks at PCH
had my best interest at heart. I felt it then. I know it now. I
signed up.
To be honest, I didn’t lose my weight right away. I
didn’t mind. My life was improving in astounding ways. It
was easy to stay motivated. Suddenly my weight started
dropping off me. The last 55 pounds melted off in five
short months.
Now my dress size is six petite. I lost my weight
without dieting. No hunger, cravings or binges. It was fast
and easy. I’ve exceeded my expectations.
Pride and Joy
I am extremely proud of my accomplishment. I can’t
take all the credit though. Hypnosis made it easy.
I have not had
to deal with
cravings and
binges. No messing
with diets, pills or
pre-packaged food.
Hypnosis made
weight loss simple
and straightforward.
I recommend
Positive Changes
Hypnosis daily. I
recommend it to
everyone. At first people
say, “Hypnosis? I don’t
know.” I tell them to take a
good look at me. I’m living
testimony and a two-year success
story. Hypnosis works!
Overweight hurts. I know. I
was there. Don’t let past
failures stand in the way of
your happiness. Call Positive
Changes Hypnosis. They won’t
charge you a penny to find out if
hypnosis is for you. There’s no pressure. No obligation.
If they don’t think hypnosis is right for you, they’ll tell
you so.
Don’t be left to wonder what might have been . . .
Pick up the phone and call now.

Do You Have Indigestion, Gas, Bloating, and a Few Pounds to Lose?
Evelyn Arbour is a
Registered Nutritionist and
is a guest speaker on the
“First Take with Dan
Carter” television show.
She is also someone
who has experienced
change in her life when it
comes to losing weight by
changing her eating habits.
“I know how it feels
physically and emotionally
to have a weight problem
and digestive disorders,”
she explains. “This experi-
ence helps me to work with
my clients so they can
achieve their goals.”
Evelyn has designed a
4 step program for her
clients that is easy to follow
and has resulted in long
term results.
The first step is a 1 hour
consultation. She finds out
what you’ve been eating
and how you’ve been feel-
ing. It’s a time to learn
about good and bad eating
habits as well as the differ-
ences between good and
bad digestion.
Next you take home a
questionnaire. This
helps you to see
which systems you
may be having
trouble with
including diges-
tion, elimination
and respiratory as
well as problems
associated with vit-
amin and mineral
deficiencies.
Once this is
done the next step
is to determine
whether you need a
detoxification pro-
gram.
“You may feel
bloated all the time,
have bad breath or
feel tired all the
time,” says Evelyn.
“Detoxification is
the body’s natural
process of elimina-
tion or neutralizing
of toxins via the
liver, the kidneys,
the urine, feces,
exhalation and per-
spiration.”
This step of the pro-
gram also includes your
eating plan based on your
needs whether it’s for
detoxification, weight loss
or both.
Evelyn provides you
with easy and affordable
recipes and an individual-
ized eating plan which will
include herbal supplements
for detoxification.
She will also instruct
you on healthy food substi-
tutions in particular replac-
ing the 4W’s: white rice;
white flour; white pasta and
white sugar.
The last part of the pro-
gram is your maintenance
stage when Evelyn reexam-
ines your eating habits and
how you feel to determine if
you need to modify your
eating plan.

Durham Region considers pesticide regulations
Health department
to look at health effects
of spraying
DURHAM —Durham’s health
department is reviewing the health
effects of pesticides, such as those
on lawns, before determining if
their use should be regulated.
The Durham Region Health De-
partment is currently reviewing
medical literature on the health ef-
fects associated with pesticide use.
It is also awaiting results of a simi-
lar study by Toronto’s health de-
partment and will conduct a survey
of Durham residents this month to
decide whether to recommend pes-
ticide regulations within the Re-
gion, said Dr. Robert Kyle,
Durham’s medical officer of health.
Municipal representatives, other
regional departments, the Durham
environmental advisory committee,
and other community stakeholders,
should hold a meeting in the new
year to review the findings, the
Durham health and social services
committee recommended Thurs-
day.
“I am really pleased with the di-
rection this is going in,” said Os-
hawa Regional Councillor Cathy
Clarke. “I really like the holistic ap-
proach, the consultative approach.
This means we can deal with it as a
whole instead of piecemeal within
each municipality.”
Pickering Regional Councillor
Maurice Brenner said the studies
will “give each municipality a bet-
ter understanding” of the issue. Pes-
ticide control is in the jurisdiction
of the local municipalities to en-
force, he noted.
“The Quebec Supreme Court
ruled it was OK for municipalities
to form bylaws banning or regulat-
ing pesticides,” said committee
chairman and Brock Councillor
Larry O’Connor. “(Regional) staff
will work with area municipalities,”
on regulations.

To the many Volunteers at the
Ajax/Pickering Hospital Auxiliary
“Your loyalty and hard work are an
inspiration to us all.”
We Salute You
Congratulations from the Mayor,
Council and Staff of the
Town of Ajax on 50 Years of Service
ith a twinkle in her eye, 88 year-old Dorothy
Westney recalls the details of an evening visit in
the fall of 1951.
“Jessica Ruddy phoned me and asked if she could
come over,” said Mrs.Westney. “Her husband,
Robert Ruddy, was on the Board of Directors of
the Ajax and Pickering Township General
Hospital and the board had just had a meeting.
Even though the hospital hadn’t been built yet,
the board had decided they wanted a women’s
auxiliary to help with fundraising and equipping
the hospital."
Mrs.Westney, a schoolteacher, was home after
the birth of her second daughter. She and her
husband, Henry, were busy running the family
farm in north Ajax. After some initial hesitation,
Mrs.Westney accepted the challenge and
gathering together a number of women from the surrounding
communities, chaired the first meeting of the Auxiliary to the Ajax
and Pickering General Hospital on November 7, 1951. The rest, as
they say, is history. This devotion to community is typical of
Dorothy Westney. She served as president of the Auxiliary from
1951 to 1953.
Along with a strong team of community-
minded men and women, she laid the
foundation of the Auxiliary’s 50 year history.
Service, fundraising, outreach, support – all
these cornerstones were laid in the first
years of the Auxiliary's history and have been
strengthened over the years.
Mrs.Westney continues to be involved with
the Auxiliary. For twenty years she
volunteered in the Auxiliary’s 4477 Nearly
New shop in Pickering Village and regularly
participates in meetings and fundraising
events. She is still actively involved with a
number of other community groups such as
Amnesty International and Community Care.
“I’m extremely proud of the Auxiliary and the
role the volunteers have played at the
hospital,” said Mrs.Westney. “Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering is
West Durham’s hospital and with everyone's support has an
exciting future ahead. The Auxiliary was there at the beginning and
I know it will be there in the many years to come.”
It would be impossible to put a price tag on
the contributions made by the more than
300 adult and student Auxiliary volunteers
to the daily life of the hospital. Their
invaluable support at the Information Desks,
in Day Surgery, the Health Education
Centre, the Fracture Clinic, Maternal and
Newborn Services and many other areas of
the hospital means so much to staff,
physicians, patients and visitors. They
tirelessly raise funds through a variety of

In everything they do, these dedicated volunteers work to further
their mission statement “…to assist the Health Centre in every

On behalf of the staff, physicians and patients at Rouge Valley Ajax
and Pickering, I would like to congratulate the Auxiliary on their
50th anniversary and thank them for their outstanding support.
A look through these pages will show quite clearly that their

excellent care to the residents of West Durham.

The 4477 Shop opened in March, 1976 and took its name from its phone number

money for the hospital and for student bursaries. Clothing, shoes, boots, jewellery
household items, collectibles, games and sport equipment can all be found at the
shop. Bursaries and awards are presented to students attending six area high
schools to assist them as they go on to
study as Registered Nurses, Registered
Practical Nurses or take courses in
other medically related fields.The 4477
Shop is located at 82 Old Kingston
Road, Pickering Village and is open
Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Close to 40,000 babies born at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering have been a little bit warmer thanks
to the Auxiliary’s volunteer knitters. Since 1956 the Auxiliary has ensured that every newborn
receives a pair of handknitted booties or a toque from
the Auxiliary. A dedicated group of volunteers (like Edith
Schofield, far right, who has contributed over 5,000 pairs
of booties) knit these colourful gifts and three days a
week they are distributed in the hospital before mom
and new baby head home.
Grade Two students from across Durham Region have an opportunity to visit the hospital
thanks to the volunteers who run the Wednesday morning tour program. The two hour
program helps youngsters become familiar with the hospital in case they ever have to visit
as a patient. A tour of various departments along with hands on work stations helps them
learn about casts, x-rays, operating rooms, stethoscopes and more.
Paediatric Education Program (P.E.P.)
Student Volunteers
Knitters
Student volunteers from across West Durham assist in many areas of the
hospital. These students, aged 14 – 20, commit to at least 150 hours during
the Fall/Winter program and 50 hours during the Summer program. But it is
not uncommon for Student Volunteers to do well over these minimums. In
2000, the Student Volunteers donated over 8,000 hours to the hospital by
helping out on the floors and in various departments.
To find out how you can become
a volunteer, please call the
Auxiliary at 905-683-2320

CONGRATULATIONSCONGRATULATIONS
The year 2001 is an extremely exciting year in
life of our community hospital. In March the
Foundation secured a substantial donation
allowing Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering to open
it’s very first Nuclear Medicine Clinic, a
vitally-needed service not currently available
within a 30km radius of the hospital. In June we
announced to the Rouge Valley Health System
Board of Directors that the Ajax Pickering
Hospital Foundation and the Centenary Health
Centre Foundation have combined their
strengths to form a new entity, the Rouge Valley
Health System Foundation. Now we are celebrating the 50th
anniversary of the Hospital’s oldest and dearest friend, the Auxiliary
to the Ajax and Pickering General Hospital.
As the West Durham community grows at a dramatic rate it is
important to have friends like the Auxiliary to help our hospital
keep pace. In 1999 the Auxiliary recognized that the hospital they
helped build was “bulging at the seams” and made a $500,000
pledge to facilitate the purchase of a brand-new CT Scanner.
An exemplary contribution that reflects the Auxiliary’s mission
statement “…to assist the Health Centre in every
possible way.” Not only was this a fantastic gift to
a growing institution but it was also the first
pledge in the Foundation’s $13.7 million Vital Signs
Capital Campaign, setting an example for other
community groups, individuals and businesses in
West Durham to follow.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Rouge
Valley Health System Foundation I would like to
congratulate the Auxiliary to the Ajax and
Pickering General Hospital on 50 years of
friendship and support to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering. With
friends like the Auxiliary the future looks bright for our community
hospital!
Sincerely,
Nancy J. Maxwell

CT Scanner
In June 1999, physicians, staff, the community and the Auxiliary
celebrated the arrival of a brand new CT Scanner at Rouge Valley
Ajax and Pickering. The hospital was able to purchase this $1.2
million brand new piece of specialized diagnostic equipment with
the help of the business and local community and with the
Auxiliary’s pledge of $500,000.
The CT Scanner is a vital and valuable diagnostic tool which allows
for greater accuracy and earlier detection of abnormalities.
Since 1999,West Durham patients have been able to get these
specialized tests done at their local hospital.
Special Needs Nursery
In the early 90’s, the Auxiliary focussed their fundraising attention on the newest
members of the West Durham community, the many babies born at Rouge Valley
Ajax and Pickering. With a pledge of $500,000 from the Auxiliary the hospital
was able to build and equip a Special Needs Nursery. Since then nurses and
physicians have been able to provide extra special care and specialized equipment
for fragile newborns at the hospital. Special monitors, equipment and incubators
ensures the very best care. The Auxiliary also made sure that rocking chairs and
fold out chairs were on hand for parents’ comfort.
Fluoroscope
In 1996 the Auxiliary pledged nearly $500,000 for
new equipment in Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering’s
Diagnostic Imaging Department. In just 30 months
they had met that commitment and in 1998/99 the
hospital was able to purchase a new fluoroscope and
radiology equipment including new ultrasound
machines, x ray machines, processors and an
imager/server/processor.

Pickering wins three straight
after opening night loss
PICKERING —The Pickering Panthers minor bantam
select hockey team reeled off three consecutive wins after
opening-night jitters hurt the squad.
In their most recent league contest, the Panthers scored four
times in the first period en route to a 5-1 victory over the Rich-
mond Hill Stars. Lighting the lamp were Andrew Paradis with
two, and Matthew Evans, Brad Downton and Chris Rotolo
with one apiece. Chipping in with assists were Andrew Gold-
smith, Taylor Gray, Justin Bruce and Evans. Pickering lost
Kyle Fredericks to a broken arm during the contest.
In Aurora, the bantams skated to a 3-2 win. Justin Pa-
pizewski, Gray and Bruce scored, with assists to Ryan Lind-
say, Daniel Thrift, Goldsmith, Downton, Rotolo and Bruce.
Matthew McMulkin was solid in net.
The Panthers devoured the Newmarket Redmen 6-2.
Downton and Gray netted two apiece, while Fredericks and
Papizewski each added one. Assisting were Fredericks with
three, Rotolo, Bruce and Derek Savoie with two each and
Goldsmith with one. Mike Johnson turned away 23 shots to
earn the win.
With six new faces in the lineup, Pickering was rusty in its
league opener, losing 4-1 to Ajax. Papizewski scored the lone
goal, assisted by Gray and Savoie.
Derek Westlake, Leland Street, Andrew Dowdell, Mike
Lafferton and Joey Paul have been solid performers for Pick-
ering.
Raiders the Kings of St. Lawrence
Peewees win five straight
for tourney crown
DURHAM —The Ajax-Pickering
Raiders Tormon/Bank of Montreal pee-
wee ‘AAA’ rep hockey team was
crowned king of the Rideau-St.
Lawrence Tournament of Kings in
Brockville last weekend.
The Raiders went undefeated in
round-robin play to eventually earn a
spot in the championship final against
another group of Raiders, the Nepean
Raiders. Ajax-Pickering captured the
title with a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
Chris Chappell scored the first goal
from Greg Riggs. Late in the second pe-
riod, Kyle Stewart and Andrew Wilkins
set up Nathanial Underhill for the game
winner. Jamie Molony was spectacular
in net to preserve the Raiders’first tour-
nament championship of the season.
In the opening game, the Raiders
skated to a convincing 6-2 victory over
the host Rideau-St. Lawrence Kings.
Goal scorers were Cody Pollard, Riggs,
Wilkins, Chappell, Stephen Boyle and
Underhill. Riggs also pitched in with an
assist.
In Game 2, the Raiders continued to
fill the net, scoring a 7-2 victory over the
Ottawa Sting. Robert Bentley, Brett
Chisholm, Kyle Speers, Stewart, Kyle
Neadles, Pollard and Chappell scored.
Assisting were Riggs with four, and
Wilkins, Chappell, Boyle and Underhill,
with one apiece.
The Raiders played their finest de-
fensive game, winning 4-0 over the
Kanata Blazers in Game 3. Scoring
were Speers, Bentley, Pollard and
Riggs, with assists to Chappell with two
and Bentley and Stewart, each with one.
The defence of Kyle van de Bospoort,
Chris Dixon, Wilkins, Boyle and
Chisholm was solid in front of a flaw-
less Molony.
In the final round-robin game, the
Raiders finished perfectly with a con-
vincing 5-2 victory over Nepean. Scor-
ing were Chappell with two, and Nea-
dles, Boyle, and Riggs with one apiece.
Assists went to Chappell and Pollard
each with three and Speers and Stewart
with two apiece. David Blair played a
strong game in net, keeping the Raiders
in the game with big saves early in the
contest.
The Raiders’ staff includes head
coach Tom Riggs, assistants Jeff Ram-
say and John Cleator, trainer Pat Speers
and manager Richard Wilkins.

Despite the uncertainty caused by
world events, many snowbirds are still
heading south this winter, said Canadian
Automobile Association Central Ontario.
Canada’s largest auto club has some
advice for those travelling by car.
“Motorists driving to vacation spots
such as Florida, often are so eager to
get there they forget to take appropriate
breaks,” says Carey-Ann Greenham,
Media and Public Relations Specialist for
CAA Central Ontario. A study by the
AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found
almost half the drivers in sleep-related
crashes said they did not feel even mod-
erately drowsy before they crashed.
“We suggest taking three days to
drive to Florida from the Greater Toronto
Area,” says Ms. Greenham.“
Depending on weather conditions,
CAA recommends one of two routes.
The first route is taking I-75 from
Detroit, Mi., directly to Florida, which is
about 2,289 km from Toronto and CAA’s
recommended route for winter driving.
Drivers will encounter mountains as they
get further south, but the chances of run-
ning into snow are slimmer. However,
short delays should be expected be-
cause of construction around Toledo,
Ohio, Dayton, Ohio, Lexington, Ky.,
Knoxville, Tenn., and Atlanta, Ga.
The second suggested route is to
take I-90 to I-79 from Erie, Pa., to Sut-
ton, W.Va., then US 19 to Beckley,
W.Va., to I-77.Take I-77 to Columbia,
S.C., before joining (via I-26) I-95 north-
west of Charleston, S.C.The route is
about 2,119 km from Toronto, the fastest
and most scenic route to the Atlantic
coast of Florida.

The Sept. 11 attacks in
New York and Washington
may have paralysed the
tourism industry but they
haven’t hijacked the ‘snow
bird’season.
Tourism officials from the
Sunshine State of Florida say
they expect little fall-out from
the disasters in terms of scar-
ing off Canadian seniors who
usually winter south of the
border.
“Our fly market has been
affected but the bulk of snow
birds drive. Most of our other
visitors aren’t likely to be im-
pacted unless they fly,” says
Tom Flanigan, a spokesman
for Visit Florida.
As the official tourism and
marketing agency for the
state, Visit Florida compiles
statistics and monitors trends
within the industry.
Approximately 43 million
people visit the state each
year with tourism contribut-
ing $20.9 billion to the local
economy.
A total of 1.97 million
Canadians visited Florida last
year, says Mr. Flanigan.
While Visit Florida doesn’t
have exact stats on snow
birds, it knows 43 per cent of
those people stayed longer
than 10 nights. Mr. Flanigan
estimates most of them were
likely Canadian seniors
spending more than a few
months in the state.
The vast majority of snow
birds own their Florida prop-
erties and therefore have a
vested interest in making the
trip, he says, adding in some
cases, they’ve become as fa-
miliar with the area as full-
time residents.
“All of our borders have
tightened up somewhat after
‘9-11’,” Mr. Flanigan says.
“If you see a mature couple in
a RV with Ontario plates, it’s
not likely they’re packing a
missile launcher. They aren’t
likely to incur much of a
delay.”
He also dismissed reports
of anthrax, which first sur-
faced in Florida, and the fact
FBI officials have found
some of the hijackers took
flight lessons in the Miami
area as not likely to directly
impact those visitors’ deci-
sions.
Snow birds were scared
off by the state’s climbing
crime rates in the early
1990s, when rental cars were
assigned special licence plate
numbers and therefore easily
targeted by the “bad guys,”
says Mr. Flanigan.
Their numbers also
dipped in late 1997 when the
value of the Canadian “loonie
tanked”, he says. They’ve
since rebounded at a good
rate and the concerns about
crime have faded, he adds.
Canadian seniors flock to
parts all over Florida, but
some of the most popular
destinations include Sarasota,
Fort Meyers and the ‘I-95
Corridor’, stretching from
Jacksonville down to Day-
tona Beach.
Northwest Florida, which
may not be as developed or
tropical, is becoming a hot
spot for its affordability fac-
tor. Mr. Flanigan says the
state is also seeing a growing
number of Quebeckers head-
ing south. They tend to like
the ‘I-95 Corridor’, he says.
“Right now the entire state
is for sale,” adds Mr. Flani-
gan. “There are over 800 spe-
cial deals and packages right
now being offered by lodges
and resorts in an effort to at-
tract people here.”
Perhaps the biggest exam-
ple of that is Walt Disney
World. Right now, the resort
is offering $59 per person per
night accommodations, the
same rate as a regular motel,
Mr. Flanigan adds.

Durham senior learns
difficult $4,000 lesson
BY JENNIFER STONE
Staff Writer
DURHAM —A Bowmanville
senior has learned a valuable les-
son after her wallet, which con-
tained her credit cards and per-
sonal identification numbers,
went missing.
Shirley Fus is out almost
$4,000 after someone illegally
used her credit cards for purchas-
es and cash advances before she
noticed the wallet was gone and
cancelled the
cards. And, since
she had her PIN
numbers in the
wallet, neither
the credit card
nor insurance
companies are
covering the
theft.
Mrs. Fus, 69,
said she had for-
gotten the PIN
numbers were in her purse, and
had only placed them there when
going out of town to attend a fam-
ily wedding. She believes her
wallet was stolen from her home,
which is up for sale and, as a re-
sult, had a number of visitors
through prior to noticing it was
missing.
“I think I should be allowed to
have what I want in my purse in
my house,” said Mrs. Fus.
“If I’d been outside and they
reached into my purse and took
my wallet, I’d have been fully
aware of what I’d have to pay.”
Police say the incident is
under investigation, and that a
video surveillance tape has been
borrowed from a bank where it is
believed at least one of the fraud-
ulent transactions occurred.
But they also say people have
to be extremely careful when it
comes to PIN numbers.
“They should only be in your
mind or a safety deposit box,”
said Constable John Payne of the
Durham Regional Police Claring-
ton community office. People
should also be careful not to use
obvious number combinations
such as birthdates, since other
pieces of identification within the
wallet, such as a birth certificate
or driver’s licence, may give
those numbers away, he noted.
Mrs. Fus, who said she gener-
ally stays home, and gets around
using a walker for support, sug-
gested others take her story as a
warning.
“I don’t want this to happen to
anyone else, because it’s a terri-
ble, terrible thing,” she said.

Our eight month delay for some type of interest rate relief
appears to have finally appeared. Over the past two weeks,
interest rates have dropped to record lows. This places them at
a level that they should have been at six months ago.
The housing market is still quite strong, with prices still
rising, and demand not slowing down. The job market howev-
er has become quite scary, with a large number of what we
always considered both stable and prosperous companies cutting their workforce.
REACT NOW
There is a possibility that interest rates will still move slightly lower, but take into con-
sideration how long it has taken for these recent reductions, it becomes debatable whether the
gamble on waiting would be worth it. Take advantage of these lower rates now. Consolidate
those debts that seem to get more and more difficult to keep under control each month.
Remember that holidays are only a little over two months away, so if you are like me, and spend
way too much money over the holidays, plan for it now.
A consolidation can be in the form of a loan,a second mortgage, (as long as your credit
is good financing to 100% of value is available)or re doing a complete new first mortgage is
another option. A good consolidation can save thousands in payments over the year, and proba-
bly more important is save your all important credit rating from slipping.
Remember that inquiries on your credit bureau can be the kiss of death on an application
because if you have more then two inquiries over the past three months, most lenders will auto-
matically decline your application because it appears that you are a credit seeker. Make sure that
what you are applying for is within that specific lenders lending guidelines, before you make a
formal application and a credit report is run.
Till next time
