HomeMy WebLinkAboutNA2001_10_05Officials celebrate birth of new university BY MIKE RUTA Staff Writer OSHAWA —Durham officials heralded “a bold new step in educa- tion” yesterday, as the announce- ment of Durham’s first university was celebrated at Durham College. Ontario Finance Minister Jim Flaherty allotted $60 million earlier this year to create the Ontario Insti- tute of Technology, a new university to open in two years at the Oshawa campus of Durham College. “The OIT at Durham plans to link education and skills training with the needs of the marketplace and offer a wide-range of career-ori- ented programs,” said Dianne Cun- ningham, minister of training, col- leges and universities. “College graduates attending the OIT will have a range of opportunities to seamlessly complete their degree programs.” MaryLynn West-Moynes, the college’s vice-president of academ- ic excellence and innovation, intro- duced a host of dignitaries, includ- ing Mr. Flaherty, Durham Chairman Roger Anderson, and mayors from several local municipalities. And while she asked the audience to hold their applause to the end, the introduction of college and OIT president Gary Polonsky sparked a standing ovation. “This room is filled with neigh- bours, neighbours in the best sense of the word,” he said. “Neighbours who have worked for 30 years... to achieve what other communities have.” Mr. Polonsky paid tribute to the Province, which he said “created the OIT” by making “a bold and coura- geous and correct decision” to fund the school which will be a unique facility, tailoring its program to the needs of the marketplace and blur- ring the line between a university and a college. By the end of the decade, the plan is for OIT to be roughly the size of Brock Universi- ty in St. Catharines, with as many as U did it, Durham! Durham College president Gary Polonsky is caught in the ‘Circle of Knowledge’sculpture by artist Edward Falkenberg during its unveiling yesterday in Oshawa. Mr. Polonsky joined other dignitaries across the region to officially launch the new Ontario Institute of Technology. Johnson has hired a new lawyer and now I’m dealing with her.” The Ward 3 Regional councillor came under fire this summer for building a road to a landlocked piece of rural property he purchased last year and for cutting down trees along the Pickering-Uxbridge Town Line to create a driveway. Coun. Johnson confirmed Thurs- day he retained municipal and envi- ronmental law specialist Virginia MacLean. “We just wanted some- one with a better understanding of the issues we’re faced with,” ex- plained Coun. Johnson. “She came highly recommended.” Mr. Reble said he would report to council in the next couple of weeks. Coun. Johnson has said he re- ceived permission for the work from chief administrative officer Tom Quinn, who denied giving approval. SINCE 1949 TODAY’S LIFESTYLE PICKERING SHOWROOM 1099 Kingston Road. That process will last until Nov. 30, and the board is expected to approve the re- vised document at the Dec. 17 board meeting. Principal associ- ations, teacher federation repre- sentatives, sec- ondary school student councils and all school councils can comment on the draft. The Province’s Sta- bility and Excel- lence in Educa- tion Act, which became law in June, requires all school boards to develop and put in practice a plan to deliver ex- tracurriculars in their schools. Each school must also have its own plan, derived from the board plan, to reflect local and unique circumstances. The draft poli- cy spells out that the principal is in charge of and ac- countable for ac- tivities at his or her school. When organizing school activities, principals are to consider the in- terests of stu- dents of diverse cultural back- grounds, what staff and/or com- munity members have to offer and available school resources. Rob Dyment, the board’s health and physical education facilitator, noted the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics executive has set 2:30 p.m. as the earliest time school sports can start. Oshawa Trustee Susan Shetler wondered if it was a good idea to have activities intrude on the school day, saying she has heard from parents who “aren’t pleased” with the 2:30 p.m. cap. “Our number one business is edu- cation...with this coming second,” she said. Ajax mother, son safe after home invasion Armed trio terrorize local family in Tuesday incident AJAX —A 22-year-old woman and her five-year-old son were trauma- tized but not physically harmed during a home invasion Tuesday. Durham Regional Police said three masked men, one armed with a dou- ble-barrel sawed-off shotgun, burst into the Heatherwood Road residence through a side door at about 8:35 p.m. and said they were searching for money. Sergeant Paul Malik said the woman was getting her son ready for bed at the time and neither was harmed. The intruders found no money and left. Sgt. Malik said the victim’s 21- year-old common-law husband re- turned home a short time later and po- lice were called. Detectives are investigating several leads, the officer added. Mr. Polonsky added OIT will be “completely student-driven” and in the marketplace in spring 2002 so students will know what courses the university has to offer. Darla Price, president of the Durham College student association, said the oc- casion was “truly a remarkable day”. A single parent, she said OIT means students such as herself and those with jobs here can “obtain a degree in my home town, something that would be impossible if I had to leave”. The creation of OIT will not only mean convenience for local students, but will also “open doors... we never thought were possible.” Mr. Flaherty presented Mr. Polonsky with an Ontario flag to be flown at the university, which he described as “a symbol of Ontario’s commitment” to OIT. “There was a time, between 1985 and 1995, where Durham Region was perhaps not on the top of the list of con- cerns for the province of Ontario; that’s not so anymore,” he said. The deputy premier and Whitby- Ajax MPP described OIT as “a bold new step in education that is geared toward student needs, market needs and the bot- tom-line jobs”. Mr. Anderson congratulated Mr. Polonsky, his staff, the college board of directors and “probably the best student body in all of Ontario”. Uxbridge resident Doug Wilson, the current chairman of both OIT and the college board of governors, said in an in- terview that pending government ap- proval, he hopes to keep that dual role. He was bubbling with excitement about Thursday’s event, which had an Academy Awards night kind of atmos- phere to it. “This has been building, of course, for a long time,” said Mr. Wil- son. “But until today the wraps weren’t really off it. Today was kind of the grand kick off. It was a party.” DURHAM from page 1 • Prevents surface crumble • Cleans easily • Resists solvents • Appearance • Stays black Extend The Life Of Your Driveway! Editorial &OPINIONS NEWS ADVERTISER OCTOBER 5, 2001 A few days ago, in one of my mo- ments of madness, I decided to wall- paper the bedroom. The wallpaper I picked out was the type you apply and then paint with your own choice of colour. As I applied the material and it failed to stick to the wall, I came to realize it was the type of wallpaper that required an adhesive. Funny thing was that the instruc- tions could only be read if the pack- age was opened — they were, in fact, inside out. To add complications to the matter, I found that since I had opened the roll, I could no longer re- turn it for a refund. Wouldn’t you think it fair that the information about the need of an ad- hesive be where it could be easily read on the front of the roll of wallpa- per, and not on the back? Do you think all labels and adver- tising are really being honest with the consumer? To suggest that to be true would be naive on my part because I’m sure there is an unwritten under- standing between advertisers and consumers that most labels and ad- vertising stretch the truth at least a lit- tle. Most women know that all the beauty products they buy won’t make them beautiful. Most men also know that wearing Arnold Palmer clothes will not improve their golf game ei- ther. How often have you gone off to some exotic vacation spot based on the description in the brochure and less-than-honest photographs, only to arrive there and find the place to be one step short of hell? I can relate to that scenario with some experience and I suspect many of you can. Imagine the impact on our lives if everyone had to tell the real truth about everything we wanted to sell. Would we really say the car we are trying to sell needs a new engine? Would we really tell anyone that the transmission was to say the least, dodgy? How about selling the house? Should we say the roof leaks, the taps all drip endlessly, the windows let in the weather, the basement leaks and the furnace is on its last legs? There really wouldn’t be much sold if we were all totally honest in our advertis- ing. So perhaps before we start to blame everyone else for misleading advertising we should take a closer look at our own situations. If we did that first, then perhaps we could real- ly make a solid complaint to those companies that place their instruc- tions on inside-out rolls of wallpaper. Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Roll with the punches or prepare to tell the truth Before complaining about people ‘massaging’the facts, take a look at your own situations Now that the Province of Ontario is conducting a financial review into the operations of Lakeridge Health Corporation, it’s time to make the process completely open to the public. The revelation last week the Ministry of Health is closely monitoring the finances of Lakeridge is cause for concern in Durham communities that have been very generous towards the needs of our local health-care facilities. Even a hint of any kind of financial mismanagement will surely lead to questions that require appropriate answers. Our tax dollars and donations provide the funds with which Lakeridge operates hospitals in Oshawa, Whitby, Clarington, Port Perry and Uxbridge. Sites that service patients from across Durham and beyond, including those from Ajax and Pickering. Lakeridge set its budget for next year at $220 million for the corporation, which includes $13 million more this year for in- flation and $6 million more for services. The Province agreed to give the hospital $8.5 million of the $19 million increase. Lakeridge then found $3.5 million in sav- ings bringing the projected deficit for the year to $7 million. Part of the Ministry of Health’s mandate will be to try to find that $7 million since Health Minister Tony Clement has vowed hospitals will not be allowed to run deficits in the future. Since hospitals across the province run cumulative deficits in the hundreds of millions every year, Lakeridge’s deficit may be nothing to lose sleep over. However, those taxpayers who fund the hospitals and use them here in Durham surely have the right to know exactly how much is being spent and what it is being spent on. At the very least the review must be transpar- ent, As for concerns about the cancer centre being removed from the control of Lakeridge Health, the only worry there is if con- struction of the facility slows down. Legitimate or not, local people have already contributed many millions towards the centre. If those funds have instead gone to other Lakeridge Health projects like expanding the emergency department and build- ing a new parking garage in Oshawa, then a full accounting needs to be made. Lotteries over the past few years have raised a few million for the cancer centre, but clearly the facility must be up and running by the fall of 2003. People are tired of waiting and tired of having to travel far from home for chemotherapy. If Cancer Care Ontario can get the wheels moving quickly and on budget, nobody will care who is calling the shots. A/P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, October 5, 2001 Serious questions need answers Health Ministry’s monitoring of Lakeridge Health must be open to all We were given free will to live in peace To the editor: Following the attacks on the United States, I have a number of questions that I think no one in this world can answer. Why can’t people live in peace? Why do people think revenge is the right thing to do? Why do people think two wrongs make a right? Why can’t people care? Why is America getting ready to go to war with a country where people are starving? It’s wrong! It’s like no one cares about anyone else. Do you think this world will ever change, or do you think we will live in a world filled with blood and retaliation for the rest of our lives and the generations to come? God gave people free will because He trusted them; He wanted everyone to live in peace. He gave us free will and we can’t even live up to one simple expecta- tion, to live in peace! Geoffrey Strickland, Grade 6 St. James Catholic Elementary School An unforgettable day To the editor: I have heard that an Afghanistan-based terrorist group is responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States. The presi- dent is considering an attack on the poor and innocent country of Afghanistan, be- cause he believes it was a group from this country that did it. My teacher repeatedly says she never thought she’d live to see a third World War. I cannot even imagine how the people who already risked their lives in a war feel right now. When I first heard about the Pentagon and World Trade Center being blown up, it didn’t mean much to me at first. Now I am forced to think about those innocent people fearing for their lives, knowing they may never again walk a step on Earth. My mom says I’ll never forget that fate- ful day when I was standing outside, never knowing people were being killed. God bless America, home of the brave! Cooking, heating and electrical fires account for about half of home fires and almost one-third of deaths, Mr. Evered noted. The baseball analogy is used to drive home safety messages about the leading causes of home fires — kitchen fires are first base, heating equipment fires are second, and electrical fires are third. Home plate is dedicated to home escape planning and smoke alarms. “People think they’re safer from fire than they really are, particularly at home,” Mr. Evered said. “As a result, they often lack basic information on how to prevent them. By learning where home fire dangers exist and taking some simple precautions, Ajax residents can greatly reduce their risk.” Through a partnership with the office of the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and Bell Canada, a provincewide colouring contest for chil- dren of all ages is being held. Contest entry forms are being provided at local schools, but can also be picked up at ei- ther Ajax fire hall. Entries can be re- turned to the fire stations, where a ran- dom draw will select a winner. That entry will then be forwarded to the prize headquarters. During the week, the public can drop by either fire hall for a tour. Also, orga- nized tours can be arranged. The halls are on Monarch Avenue at Centennial Road and on Westney Road just north of Hwy. 2. Tours run from 2 to 9 p.m. Oct. 7, 8 and 13, and from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 9 to 12. For more information on the week, call the fire prevention office at 905- 683-7791. Air & Hotel Cambridge Conservatory offers close encounters with butterflies Along a fairly quiet stretch of road on the outskirts of Cambridge, you can find a small jewel in the rough. Wings of Paradise is a privately owned butterfly conservatory that fronts 117 acres of woods and meadow. Conceived as a showcase for exotic but- terflies, as well as a venue where folks can get in touch with the environment, the facil- ity exudes a warm, family-focused feel . Typically a visit will start with the conser- vatory where you can commune with some 40 species of butterflies such as the blue morpho and striking owl butterflies. The tropical garden that is the backdrop for the butterflies features a cascading wa- terfall and meandering waterways. Curator John Powers, who has been collecting but- terflies for more than 40 years dreamed of such a facility, and with the help of three other business partners, Wings of Paradise was launched in January 2001. Public re- sponse to date has been good – as of Sep- tember about 110,000 people had visited the conservatory. The conservatory itself at 10,000 square feet is considerable though not huge. It is well laid out and offers a pleasant meander. A comparison with the Butterfly Conserva- tory in Niagara Falls is inevitable. Unques- tionably pots of money were spent on the Niagara Botanical Garden’s butterfly show- case and the physical structure there is im- pressive, with rolling terrain and seamless landscaping. While Wings of Paradise is not quite on such a scale, in many ways it felt more accessible than its upscale cousin. Visits to the Paradise are fairly casual, (no timed ticket required) and one is welcome to re-enter the conservatory as many times as one wishes. We visited on a sunny day, when the but- terflies are most active. Benches are posi- tioned throughout, and we sat quietly for some time, watching the winged inhabi- tants. The conservatory temperature ranges from 75 to 85 degrees (F), and staff recom- mend dressing in layers to allow for a com- fortable stroll. There are a couple of com- mon sense rules, such as not touching the butterflies (it damages their scales), not picking the plants, and staying out of the water. My kids loved rambling through the conservatory, especially walking under the waterfall. Currently, butterfly pupa are brought in from butterfly farms in Costa Rica and Malaysia. In the future, manager of market- ing at Wings of Paradise, Melissa Parker, says that there are hopes of expanding the variety of species on display by investigat- ing farms in the United Kingdom, or by raising butterflies in-house. After visiting the conservatory, you can enjoy a stroll along the Lightfoot Nature Trails that wind out back of the facility. At the moment, all you will see are woodlands, meadows and a naturalized butterfly gar- den. A short circuit will take 20 minutes or so, though there is a longer 5 km loop. Wings of Paradise have ambitious plans for the future. Eventually the complex will include a variety of gardens, including a rock garden, a special needs/seniors garden and a children’s garden designed to appeal to the senses. The first phase of landscape development is slated to be complete for June 2002. Wings of Paradise also has two display galleries, that showcase Powers’ personal collection of insect and butterfly specimins. For most kids, there’s nothing like a pecu- liar bug to capture the imagination. Different special event programming will be featured throughout the year. For exam- ple, we visited during the annual September Monarch Migration celebration. For a few days each fall when the wind and weather are just right, thousands of Monarchs will set off southward from central spots like Point Pelee National Park. We didn’t have to go all the way to Point Pelee however; as we were able to watch as curator John Pow- ers released tagged Monarchs as they start- ed their 4,500 km migration south to the Sierra Madres Mountains of Mexico. The tagging process, started 40 years ago by University of Toronto researcher Dr. Fred Urquhart and his wife Nora, led to the discovery of the Monarch’s destination in Mexico. There, the Monarchs will over win- ter in a dormant state, roosting in clusters on Oyamel Fir trees. On the way back north, it takes some three generations of monarchs to return to On- tario and the northern states. Since no but- terfly will ever make a round trip, the mech- anism that causes the migration is some- thing of a mystery. Do they follow the milk- weed? The continued tagging of Monarchs may eventually shed new light on this, how- ever in the meantime, it’s quite a spectacle to see the Monarchs take off with their tiny I.D. stickers. The kids were riveted by the Monarch re- lease. Meanwhile, John Powers gave us some insight into the tagging process –from the early Urquhart days when hand made and numbered gummed labels were applied, to the present. Don Davis, Monarch guru, also spoke on the famous butterfly, also known as the Happy Wanderer, or William of Orange (among other names). Allow between 45 minutes and two hours for a visit, depending on the activities of- fered and general interest. Wings of Par- adise is open year round, 10:00 AM – 4 PM daily. Adults $7.50, kids 5 to 12 $4, 4 years and under free. There is a café on site. For more information call 519-653-1234. 2500 Kossuth Rd, Cambridge. www.wingsofpar- adise.com. Small Business Week, which runs Oct. 21 to 27, is organized by the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), in co-opera- tion with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and pays tribute to the talents and achievements of owners and managers of small- and medium-sized enterprises. The annual event also gives entrepreneurs an op- portunity to network with those interested in small business and dedicated to its development. The BDC has chosen ‘the power of innovation — driving small business growth’ as this year’s theme. To be continually more productive, the BDC said small businesses have to step up the pace of their in- novation as research from Statistics Canada shows the most successful companies are the ones where innova- tion permeates in everything they do, from product devel- opment, to process design, and to marketing. Innova- tive companies, the BDC added, show productivity increases six- to nine-times higher than ones that aren’t particularly innovative. This year’s Small Busi- ness Week provides entre- preneurs an opportunity to take stock of where they rate on the innovation scale and to share ideas and infor- mation on using strategies to assure a prominent place for Canada in the fiercely competitive global arena, the release said. The Durham Business Advisory Centre, Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce and Ajax Pickering Board of Trade have all planned events for the week. Up to 35% OFF Green Fees Monday-Friday CALL US! By Lois Hole Multi-Ad Services At this time of year, peo- ple are thinking more about what to cook for Thanksgiving dinner than their gardens. However, there are still a few odds and ends to take care of in the yard. Heading off diseases and insects is one of those tasks, and in my experience the best way to discourage these pests is to clean up your garden before the snow falls. Knowing a little about how diseases and insects behave helps, too. DISEASES It would be nice if there were some magic spray or secret method of getting rid of all diseases. Of course, there’s no such thing. Fortunately, removing dead, diseased or decaying tissue as it appears can go a long way towards preventing the spread of future diseases. Most diseases go through a cycle. First, they infect the plant. Then, when winter arrives, they go dor- mant and wait inside the infected tissue. When spring arrives, the diseases leap back to life and reinfect the plant. So, removing diseased branches and stems in the fall greatly reduces the possibility of reinfection next year. Diseased tissue isn’t always easy to spot, but do the best you can-get rid of tissue with obvious cankers, holes, or black, dead patches. Remember to cut if off with clean, sharp pruners to pre- vent undue damage to your plants, and never throw dis- eased tissue into the compost pile. Cutting down rose canes is another good way to forestall disease. Some people like to leave the canes in place to trap snow, which helps ten- der roses over winter, but I prefer to remove canes and use mulches like peat moss for insulation. It’s much easier to remove the mulch in the spring than to have to deal with diseases (and insects) harboured by uncut canes. It’s especially important to cut back and clean up canes when the plant has a history of problems. Hybrid teas should be cut down to about 15-30 cm from the soil; hardy roses, generally more resistant to disease than hybrid teas, should just be trimmed to shape if you desire. Any part of a plant may provide shelter for disease. That’s why you should never keep potato tubers over the winter for planting next spring-these can harbour seri- ous diseases like bacterial ring rot, which causes a horrid, mushy brown ring to appear in tubers. Certified seed pota- toes are free of such diseases; it’s far better to buy these each year than to risk spreading this disease in your garden. Speaking of tubers and the like, never store any soft and mushy corms, bulbs, or ornamental tubers. These will continue to deteriorate in stor- age and spread disease to healthy tubers. Insects The shorter, cooler days of September are triggering certain insect behaviors. Most importantly, hibernating insects are on the lookout for hiding places. They’ll take shelter in cracks and bark on trees, in leaf debris, and any other sheltered spots they can find. Once more, your best strategy for preventing an insect resurgence in the spring is to remove any dead, dying or insect ridden branches, especially since most sprays are useless in the fall. One exception is a prod- uct called dormant oil. Dormant oil is a horticultural oil that coats and suffocates insects. It should be sprayed on trunks, branches and canes after the leaves have either fallen or been cleaned off. The oil kills mites and aphid eggs and can also kill some hiber- nating diseases. Another good spray is a special lime-sulphur concoction. It kills mites and disease, but should only be used on dormant plants. The lime-sulphur combination can cause severe burning on foliage, but once all the leaves have fallen in September or October, there is no risk of damage. The Last Word This isn’t a time to rest on our laurels-our tiny ene- mies certainly aren’t about to head into fall without having a plan for spring in mind. So hold off on those Thanksgiving preparations until you’ve frustrated their ambitions. &&LawnLawn GardenGarden Advertising FeatureAdvertising Feature Don’t Forget About Those Fall Garden Pests And Diseases Delivery & Planting Service, Insect & Disease Diagnosis Serving Local Gardeners For Over 30 Years Pine Ridge Garden Gallery • 7 days a week • 1 Year Guarantee Spring Flower Bulbs PLANT NOW!! Directed by Antoine Fuqua. Every day there is a war being waged on America’s inner city streets — a war between residents, drug dealers and the people sworn to protect one from the other. This war has its casual- ties, none greater than Los Angeles Police Department Detective Sergeant Alonzo Harris (Washington), a 13- year veteran narcotics offi- cer whose questionable methodology blurs the line between legality and cor- ruption. His optimism has long since been chipped away by his tour of duty in the streets, where fighting crime by the book can get you killed, and getting the job done often requires Alonzo and his colleagues break the laws they are em- powered to enforce. This crime tale shadows Alonzo as he tests the re- solve of wide-eyed, idealis- tic rookie Jake Hoyt (Hawke), who has one day, and one day only, to prove himself to his fiercely charismatic superior. Over the next 24 hours, Jake will be pulled deeper and deeper into the ethical mire of Alonzo’s logic as both men put their lives and career on the line. But Lewis’romantic hopes hit a detour when he stops on the way to rescue his older brother, Fuller, (Zahn) who goads his brother into play- ing a prank on a trucker over the CB radio, ridicul- ing his lonely voice in the night. Emboldened by the fact he’ll be moving soon, and rather than put up with the normal routine of school, he begins an all-out plan for retaliation against those who picked on him. After creating all kinds of may- hem, Max finds out he’s not moving after all and must face up to the consequences of his actions. This production is a bit of a depar- ture from what is usually seen at Heron- gate, being both a comedy and a musi- cal, with a touch of melodrama. The story is loosely based on the 90- year-old story by Gaston Leroux of a phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House and lives beneath it. In the Pinchpenny version, a small- town opera house struggles to present Grand Opera on a not-at-all grand bud- get. Efforts are hampered by a mysteri- ous character, perhaps a phantom, who appears onstage in opera after opera. The show includes heavily modified scenes from several operas. These are fun and quite musical, accompanied by marvellous piano playing by Rod Crawford. The script, cre- ated by Dave Reiser and Jack Sharkey, is far- fetched and not as hilarious as Sharkey’s straight comedies. How- ever, the talented and hard-working cast of Geoff Coulter, Bethany Jillard, Don Green, Duchan Cover, and Frances Stecyk, move the show along at a pace that leaves behind the creakier bits in the plot. NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, October 5, 2001 PAGE 17 P Strong local cast brightens Herongate offering Fear finds a home for Durham horror writer BY LESLEY BOVIE Staff Writer DURHAM ––Diana Bar- ron doesn’t look like a horror writer. She doesn’t wear black. Her home isn’t dark and draped in cobwebs. In fact, it’s bright and welcoming, and the view of Lake Scugog’s Port Perry shoreline from the writing nook in her kitchen is pic- turesque. But a small rubber bat on top of her computer monitor, a ‘Night Terrors’ interactive screen saver, and a healthy li- brary of Stephen King classics betray a longstanding affinity for dark fantasy. “I just always loved being scared,” says the writer, who recently penned her first full- fledged novel ‘Phantom Feast.’ Barron’s eyes light up re- calling childhood memories of peering through a banister as her parents watched such TV cult favourites as ‘The Twi- light Zone.’ She says it set her on a course for horror, catch- ing as many horror movies and books as she could over the years. But when it comes to hor- ror, nothing beats the descrip- tiveness of a spooky read, says Barron, who counts Edo van Belkom, Stephen King, Peter Straub, and John Saul as among her inspirations. “I love the inventiveness,” she says of the genre. And ‘Phantom Feast’, Bar- ron’s first attempt at the novel form, is nothing if not inven- tive. It tells the story of Erin, a young woman, whose parents purchase an antique circus wagon used in PT Barnum shows. They bring home the wagon, but have no idea it is haunted by the spirit of an African lion. “It retains his trace memo- ries and emotions embedded in its walls,” the author explains. “It retains his rage and the loneliness of when he died.” Getting inside the head of an animal wasn’t difficult for Barron, a member of the World Wildlife Fund and Humane Society. Nor was writing, period. After years of pursuing several different careers, including commercial artwork, Barron was sidelined by a multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 1994. “I was one of those people who always wrote poetry and just stashed it away,” she ex- plains. “But in 1997, I decided to sit down at the computer and as soon as my fingers hit the keys I just started writing.” Pickering Dairy Queen 1099 Kingston Rd. My desk is located in front of three big windows looking out over our street. I can see the trees lining our street and the leaves changing colour and covering the lawns. This is such a beautiful time of year and certainly with the events in New York a time of reflection as well. Can these terrorists really dictate our way of life? Fortunately even in times of restraint or recession people will always have money for fast food so I’m not complaining believe me. We have just opened a second store and our sales in both stores are still strong, even now, and I thank God for that. But what about the economy? Should we be afraid of flying because of these events? Should we stop spending, sell off our investments, bring the economy to a grinding halt and give in to the fear that is pervading the world? I think not. I heard of an owner of a company with about 200 employees who called them all in and gave them 100.00 each and said go spend it. That’s what we need to do. We need to pump money into the economy. Sherry and I have just put a deposit down on a vacation and we will be flying to our destination. One of our customers in the travel business said there are some great bargains to be had. This is the time to be thinking that way. Don’t give up! Step up! The government is doing it’s part for the economy by lowering interest rates and taxes. That is a great benefit to businesses like ours. That’s what we need… everybody working together. We need to spend money at Christmas and support all businesses where ever they are. That includes Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Burger King, Lick’s, Harvey’s and all the others. No Canadians should lose their job because of this. Not on our soil. Not in Canada! In the next 12 weeks we are going to do our part. Starting Friday, October 5 I will keep a promise I made earlier and run over 16 cent blizzard sale again for one week from October 5th to Friday, October 12th. There will be one change. When you purchase any 16 oz. blizzard at the regular price you will get another 16 oz blizzard for only 6 cents to celebrate 6 years in Pickering. Watch for more specials in the weeks to come. Next week a family of four will get a real deal. Tell your friends! Thank you Pickering for supporting both our stores. We are proud to have lived right here in Pickering Village for the last 10 years. We are proud to be Canadians. We won’t be intimidated! 6¢6¢ check for details check for details BY LESLEY BOVIE Staff Writer DURHAM ––This week’s tempera- tures may have been well above the sea- sonal norm but folks at the Port Perry Snowmobile Club are already dreaming about winter. Believe it or not, this is actually the club’s busiest time, when members start preparing trails by cutting brush and clear- ing dead trees. President Charlie Harper says he ex- pects it to be a good year even though the sport is in for some changes this season as dictated by Bill 101, the Motorized Snow Vehicles Amendment Act. “I think it’s probably a good thing. It takes the carelessness out of it and makes people responsible,” he says, of the stiffer fines and requirements being introduced. Durham Regional Police say the new legislation, which was passed in May, gives the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act “a little more bite.” Written in the early 1970s without much revision since, the act had become outdated, says Constable Douglas Morse, co-ordinator of Durham’s Snow- mobile Trail Officer Program. Now riders caught snowmobiling with- out a valid trail permit will face fines from $200 to $1,000. While trail permits have always been mandatory, there was always a few in the sport, who “ducked around it,” says Const. Morse. In the past, his special constables could only lay a trespassing charge in those cases, he says. “The sale of trail permits helps support the sport by putting money into trail main- tenance. If people don’t buy those permits, that money isn’t going in,” Const. Morse explains. Other significant changes include stiffer penalties for those fleeing from police. Those riders used to risk a $110 failing-to- stop fine but now they could pay anywhere between $1,000 and $25,000 for such an offence. Should their actions cause injury or death, they could even have their licence suspended for 10 years to life. At the same time, riders caught on the trails without a licence could face a $1,000 to $2,000 fine. In the past, those snowmo- bilers would receive a $110 without-a-li- cence ticket and a rider’s driving record wouldn’t be affected. That’s all changing now, says Const. Morse. Both he and Mr. Harper agree it’s a slim minority of snowmobilers who actually try to bend the rules on the trail. The amending act has been three years in the making, with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation gathering input from a number of sources, including STOP. It re- ceived unanimous approval from clubs across the Province at the Ontario Federa- tion of Snowmobile Clubs annual confer- ence last month in Timmins. “We still feel some adjustments need to be made,” says Mr. Harper, adding there will be some opportunity for clubs to make suggestions at the end of the season. But most of his 1,650 members won’t see much of a change because there is “high complacency” among the Port Perry club in terms of regulations and purchas- ing permits, he says. The OFSC is still reviewing its permit fees and the price may go up this year due to the organization’s rising insurance costs. Last year, permits were $120 if pur- chased before Dec. 1 and $150 after that date, says Mr. Harper. Board adds routes for north Pickering, Ajax pupils facing lengthy morning waits BY MIKE RUTA Staff Writer AJAX —The public school board has apologized to north Pickering and Ajax residents and added more late- morning buses so Pickering High School students don’t have a lengthy period where they are at school wait- ing for class to start. “Working with your staff we re- solved the problem we had with bus- ing at Pickering High School,” parent Peter Agur said at Monday’s Durham District School Board standing com- mittee meeting. “If the details don’t pan out, we may be back.” He thanked board staff and Ajax Wards 1 and 2 Trustee Marilyn Craw- ford for their help. Because it is overcrowded, Picker- ing High School has two schedules, with senior students starting school at 8 a.m. and younger students beginning at 9:25 a.m. The board this year cut a bus at the school, which meant that about 80 rural students, who start school at 9:25 a.m., had to take the buses transporting students for the ear- lier start. “My own daughter, she was being picked up at 7:20 a.m. and getting to school at 7:45,” Mr. Agur said in an in- terview. While the school proposed remedi- al help for the students, parents said their kids needed more sleep and a good breakfast instead. Mr. Agur said students had little to do when they ar- rived at school. “They’ve been hanging around the school and they’ve now discovered the cafeteria, and even the principal is say- ing it’s really quiet in there, they’re dead (tired),” he said. Mr. Agur said with more buses his daughter would now get about two hours more sleep per night. He told the board transportation staff should continue to find ways to reduce costs and improve the way bus- ing changes are communicated to the public. Mr. Agur said he only learned of the new busing arrangement in Sep- tember. He also said the busing problem is a symptom of a greater malady. “The biggest problem that we iden- tified is please enlarge PHS, it is much, much too (crowded),” he said. Business superintendent Ron Tr- bovich said “at the end of the day the only solution was to put on more buses.” He said students would be in- formed of the new bus schedule, to be implemented on Tuesday when three more buses are added. “An apology is in order to the Claremont, Whitevale, north Picker- ing, north Ajax residents,” said Mr. Tr- bovich. The Panthers come into the litmus- test contest against the first-place Buzzers brimming with confidence after vaulting over the .500 mark at the expense of the lowly Oshawa Legion- aires in OHA Ontario Provincial Ju- nior ‘A’ Hockey League action in Os- hawa Tuesday night. Panthers rookie forward Scott Old- field, returning to the line-up recently after a shoulder injury threatened to sideline him indefinitely, notched what held up as the game winner at the three-minute mark of the third period in a 3-2 Panthers win over Oshawa. The victory improves the Panthers’ record to 4-4-1-1 for 10 points, putting Pickering in fourth place in the nine- team South Conference standings. The Legionaires, meanwhile, continue to struggle with one win in their first seven games. Terming Tuesday’s win over Os- hawa as a “helluva game”, Panthers’ head coach Bill Purcell is satisfied with his charges’ renewed ability to play sound hockey in their own zone. “They were doing that we’ve been asking them to do in practice,” ex- plains Purcell. “We were playing strong in our defensive end and wait- ing for the breaks. It was a good team effort from the goal on out.” Veteran wing Michael Alexiou, who scored a goal and assisted on Old- field’s game winner, says the team is beginning to round into shape in get- ting to the .500 mark. Alexiou skated with centre Oldfield and wing Ryan Taylor on a newly-formed line that fig- ured in two of the three Pickering goals. “It was a new line combination and we really worked good together. Hopefully, we can continue playing to- gether and keep up the good play,” says Alexiou. Purcell is convinced if his team plays as well as they did against St. Mike’s last Friday and Oshawa Tues- day, the undefeated Buzzers could be in for a surprise tonight. “If we play as well as we did the other night against them, we can beat them. It would be a great two points for us if we can beat them,” says Pur- cell. Team captain Garett Winder scored the other Panthers’ goal, unassisted. Other assists went to Sean Bradley and Ryan Taylor. Scott Gray earned the win in net, making 23 saves, including several key ones in the final 1:30 of the game. PANTHERS’ POSTSCRIPTS: Rookie forward Steve Farquarson was held out of Tuesday’s game at the request of the St. Michael’s Buzzers. Obviously, a trade is brewing between the two clubs...Farquarson has seven points (four goals, three assists) in six games this season...Coach Purcell ad- mits he’s surprised to see Scott Old- field come back to the line-up after he re-injured a shoulder that was surgical- ly repaired and kept him out of hockey for a year-and-a-half. “I’m surprised he’s back, but he played well (Tues- day)...Pickering has lost its two previ- ous meetings with the St. Michael’s Buzzers so far this season. Pickering was beaten 10-5 by the Buzzers on Sept. 22 and 5-2 on Sept. 30. Sunday’s scheduled home contest against the Vaughan Vipers has been cancelled. The game will be played later this sea- son. Leading up to the finals, Durham won 6-0 over Cobourg. Morgan Gerrie, Adair, Wilson, Rebecca Van Gijn, Carly Marshall and Fettes scored. The Lightning also played Syracuse to a 2-2 draw.
