Flags at all City of Pickering facilities were flying at half-mast Wednesday and city staff was ask- ing other members of the commu- nity to do the same. In a further symbolic show of sympathy and solidarity, Mayor Wayne Arthurs raised a U.S. flag, brought in to mark the most sombre occasion, halfway up the flagpole in front of City Hall Thursday morning. The City is inviting residents to share their thoughts and prayers with the victims and their families by signing a book of condolence, available Monday to Friday at City Hall, One The Esplanade, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the main branch of the Pickering Pub- lic Library after 4:30 and until 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex, 1867 Valley Farm Road, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. City officials said although there was no immediate threat to Pickering, the Emergency Opera- tions Centre went on standby Tuesday and a communications effort between federal and provin- cial agencies, as well as the Durham Emergency Measures Organization, was co-ordinated. Regional officials with the Emergency Measures Office con- tinued to monitor the situation Thursday, but closed its opera- tions centre, which had been set up Tuesday in case it was re- quired. No personnel were ever positioned in the centre, said Re- gion spokesman Pat Robinson, but relevant staff members remain on standby. During a meeting of Durham council Wednesday, a moment of silence was held out of respect for the victims. Ontario Power Generation said its enhanced security measures at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station remained in effect Wednesday, although they know of no threats made in regards to U.S. or Canadian nuclear stations. With an estimated 200 New York firefighters dead in the col- lapse of the World Trade Center, Pickering Fire Chief Bill Douglas said the service is compiling a quickly growing list of firefighters willing, if needed, to head to New York. “Firefighters are a close, tight- knit family,” said Chief Douglas, adding the force is working with fire services in Toronto and co-or- dinating a response should they be asked for help. RON PIETRONIRO/ News Advertiser photo Relief for Durham teacher as relatives found safe BY JANE McDONALD Staff Writer DURHAM ––The memory of another dark day in American his- tory helped Mary Street School principal Barbara Farrow carry on last Tuesday. Despite knowing both her brother and sister work in build- ings close in proximity to the World Trade Center, the American- born educator knew she had to pre- sent a reassuring appearance to her students. She would just have to wait to find out the fate of her sib- lings. “I had no idea if they were OK,” she says. “I couldn’t get through to my mother on Long Island to see if they were OK.” But Ms. Farrow knew what she had to do. “I needed to go from classroom to classroom to keep myself dis- tanced,” she says. “The attack was brought so close to me and was so very personal.” Sierra Club, OPG spar over nuclear restart BY MARTIN DERBYSHIRE Staff Writer PICKERING —A local envi- ronmentalist group opposed to the restart of the Pickering ‘A’nu- clear reactors says the environ- mental assessment was a white- wash and they have serious safety concerns. With a public hearing at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Com- mission (CNSC) in Ottawa set for Oct. 3 and plans to restart the first of four units by March 2002, the Sierra Club of Canada has sent a written submission to the CNSC asking that Ontario Power Gener- ation (OPG) not be licensed to restart the reactors at this time. “The day-to-day toxic emis- sions from the plant are long- standing concerns for us,” said See NUCLEAR page 4 See NEWS page 8 See PICKERING page 8 NN aa tt ii oo nn aa ll DD aa yy oo ff MM oo uu rr nn ii nn gg FF rr ii dd aa yy ,, SS ee pp tt .. 11 44 ,, 22 00 00 11 Two Great Places! Durham Regional Police Sergeant Paul Malik said the pro- ject, the force’s response to a wave of attacks and muggings last month, has had a “significant impact” on street-level violence. A task force of a dozen police of- ficers pulled from across the depart- ment resulted in 405 charges against five adults and 12 youths during the two-week operation, focused on suspected members of street gangs and other “bullies”, said Sergeant Malik. Some of those targeted by police allegedly belong to a gang called AK Ajax Chaos, sources said. In some of the recent street mug- gings, victims were swarmed by as many as 20 assailants armed with baseball bats and sticks and robbed of cash, cellphones and jewelry, po- lice said. In one case a 16-year-old Ajax boy suffered a broken orbital bone when robbed, beaten and hit with a branch near Lakeside Public School. The victims were robbed of as little as $2, while most attacks oc- curred between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. on public streets and in schoolyards and parks. Of the 17 suspects, 12 have been arrested and five others are wanted on warrants. “They’re hiding. They know who they are and that we’re looking for them. My best advice for them is to contact us and turn themselves in,” said Sergeant Bruce Townley, who headed up the task force. Many of the suspects were not previously known to police. “There’s a lot of names we’ve never heard. These guys are a real concern for us,” he added. All 17 are charged with robbery, wearing a disguise during a crime and weapons offences, police said. Other charges include aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property, mischief, ob- structing police, breach of proba- tion, breach of undertaking and breach of recognizance. Sgt. Malik called the investiga- tion a “major success” and said it was based on “good police work. We expect there will be convic- tions,” he said. Police have no plans to let up on street crime enforcement in the community and vow “continuing ef- forts to stop this kind of bullying”, Sgt. Malik said. One man is charged with 16 counts of robbery and seven counts of forcible confinement. Another faces 13 robbery charges. The adults charged are Kyle An- drew Corbin, 18, of Griffiths Drive, Bryan Frederick Styles, 21, of Pem- bry Drive, and Junior Joseph Walk- er, 18, of Mapson Crescent, all of Ajax; Jerome Jermaine Stanley, 18, of Tawnberry Street, Pickering, and Hondari Harris Johnson, 19, of no fixed address. The other 12 charged — five 15- year-olds, four 16-year-olds, two 17-year-olds, all males from Ajax, as well as a 16-year-old from Scar- borough — cannot be named under the Young Offenders’Act. Not intended to solicit properties currently listed for sale. Copyright@ 2000. AJAX/PICKERING - A new report has just been released which identifies the 6 most common and costly mistakes that homebuyers make when moving to a larger home. Unlike the experience of buying a first home, when you’re looking to move-up, and already own a home, there are certain factors that can complicate the situation. It’s very important for you to understand these issues before you list your home for sale. Not only is there the issue of financing to consider, but you also have to sell your present home at exactly the right time in order to avoid either the financial burden of owning two homes or, just as bad, the dilemma of having no place to live during the gap between closings. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “6 Mistakes to Avoid When Moving Up to a Larger Home.” The information contained in this report will help you make informed choices before you put your home on the market in anticipation of moving to a larger home. P PAGE 4 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, September 14, 2001 Nuclear plant safety a priority: OPG Irene Kock of the Sierra Club of Cana- da Nuclear Campaign. “We definitely do not support a restart.” However, Pickering council recent- ly voted unanimously to support a restart and Pat O’Brien, manager of public affairs for OPG, said reviving the reactors would have no significant environmental impact. “The plant is safe and it always was safe,” said Mr. O’Brien in an interview Friday. “Safety at all our plants is a priority; if they’re not safe they won’t operate.” Sierra Club’s submission states “the environmental assessment on Pickering ‘A’ restart is a whitewash of important nuclear safety issues at Canada’s oldest commercial nuclear power station,” claiming first, that the assessment failed to consider an ade- quate nuclear emergency plan. But, Mr. O’Brien said, although they do co-operate with the Province, nuclear emergency response in the event of an accident falls under provincial jurisdiction, not OPG’s. He also said the kind of accidents Sierra Club wants the CNSC to consider are highly unlikely. “The circumstances Sierra Club wants us to consider are unrealistic,” he said. “We do look at accidents with a one in one-million or one in 10-million chance of happening, but Sierra Club wants to include accidents with a one in 100-million chance. The CNSC has said that is not a realistic scenario to consider.” Sierra Club also contends the emer- gency shutdown procedure at the plant is insufficient, but Mr. O’Brien said a new double shutdown system would be in place before the restart. In addition, the Sierra Club claims Pickering ‘A’ was allowed to meet standards that are inferior to the re- quirements applied to newer nuclear facilities. Mr. O’Brien said that statement is “nonsense”, adding both the CNSC and OPG would never compromise the safety of the plant, its staff, or the pub- lic. May I personally and publicly com- mend Mary Pope for taking the time to teach her two children to value and respect each and every individual on this earth. My wife and I have four children; four young minds that we are committed to teaching the importance of loving and re- specting each person, but also understand- ing that the ‘choices’we individuals make are not personal and not necessarily right for the next person, or for our society. Ms. Pope, I am encouraged to see you recognize lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans- gendered individuals choose to live an “al- ternative lifestyle”. Please understand, lifestyles are to be taught at home, not in the classroom. When someone can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the gay and lesbian lifestyle is not a choice, we will withdraw the ‘declaration of family rights’ legal form we have filed in our children’s school. If we would only observe the rapidly and uncontrollable self-destructing world we live in, it would remind us of the im- portance of truth and of the fixed standard of right and wrong given us. What has to happen for us to realize that there are damning consequences to compromise and tolerance? Editorial &OPINIONS PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER SEPTEMBER 14, 2001 Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Shock. Horror. Anger. Sorrow. Grief... and revenge. Those five very different emotions -- and the solution so many hope and pray for -- sum up what many have felt since 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001. As buildings continue to fall in New York City, as rescue workers continue to battle their way through the rub- ble, as the body count piles up by the hundreds and thousands, Canadians are trying to figure out what we can do to help. The prime minister's decision to declare today a national day of mourning is a good place to start. There will be a noon-hour Parlia- ment Hill ceremony to mark the casualties of Tuesday's attack. Peo- ple by the thousands here have given blood, have offered to be part of rescue crews, have driven to New York to do whatever they can. Meanwhile, there are some incredible, heart-warming stories emerging from the horror we’ve all witnessed. One young man, a survivor of the World Trade Center attack, came across a wheelchair-bound woman near an exit door. He picked the woman out of her chair and carried her 68 floors to the ground, the two of them escaping seconds before the tower col- lapsed. Another man, on board the flight that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, spoke to his wife via cellphone from a washroom in the sky. Told about the attacks on the World Trade Center, the man realized there was only one thing he and his doomed fellow pas- sengers could do. They bravely embraced certain death, rushed the hijackers and forced the plane down before it could kill thousands of innocent Americans. What heroes. Balanced against these coura- geous tales are grim reminders that reveal our darker nature. Rock- throwing and the lobbing of a Molotov cocktail at a mosque in Os- hawa is not the Canadian way and deserves our condemnation. We are stunned by the ease with which 12 to 24 terrorists took over four separate jets at three major airports in the most powerful nation on Earth and managed to shatter a country's confidence in just a few hours. Indeed, how could it happen? Questions abound over how unprepared the U.S. was for such an attack. How could the combined forces of the FBI and CIA, part of the billions spent per year on intelligence in America, fail so miserably? How could all these terrorists make their way across international borders, through airport security and on to jets? These questions demand an- swers and desperately require solutions to prevent a recurrence. This deadly attack has united the free world like nothing else since the Second World War. The massive resources of the United States, with support from all its allies, will be launched against those responsible for this devastation. A day of reckoning will come -- ter- rorists across the globe beware. Americans will not rest until you are obliterated. Rest assured, day of reckoning is coming Canadians, rest of free world get behind U.S. as it prepares to make killers pay “Kill those responsible,” “strike back”, and “revenge”. Those words came out in editorials here in Canada and across North America the day after the attack on America. The overwhelming response so far appears to be bomb the heck out of whoever is responsible. Unfortu- nately, we don’t have an obvious enemy to strike back at swiftly. And so it goes with the evil that is terror- ism. A free democratic society, like the one we live in today, is always vulner- able to this type of cowardly attack. An attack that may have been perpe- trated on religious beliefs, like so many other senseless acts of violence and even wars. And not historical events, but events taking place now, in Bosnia, the Middle East and now here. But calmer heads must prevail. This talk of revenge and swift brutal justice had better come down to Earth soon. Because the idea of annihilating another country, all for eye-for-an-eye thinking, is deadly wrong. These terrorists — it will likely be proven to be a small band of fanatics behind the attacks — want to provoke the U.S. They want outrage and retal- iation and we cannot give in to that mentality if we ever want to reach world peace in our time. They have proven they are willing to die for their cause. We can’t give them what they want. Certainly anyone still alive, found to have been involved in the attack must be hunted down and dealt with swiftly but not at the expense of inno- cent lives. An attack on another coun- try that harms even one innocent per- son will only ensure hostilities and the possibility of further terrorist attacks will continue. In fact, it will ensure the likelihood of further terrorism. And we have to find a way to rise above our feelings of revenge, just enough to realize the true cost of con- tinuing attacks on either side of reli- gious and political differences that fuel the death and destruction no one really wants. The cycle of madness must be stopped. It has to be or our so- ciety’s dreams of worldwide peace has no hope of ever becoming reality. Now only a hollow feeling exists in the aftermath as people struggle heroically to save those they can, peo- ple clinging to life amongst the rubble of the World Trade towers and the Pentagon. There is no one taking re- sponsibility for what amounts to the worst act of terrorism in modern times around the globe. Yet move on we must. Revenge has to take a back seat to the healing. People across North America are scared this week. Their safety has been compromised and in order to get back to normal somehow, we must focus on the dream of peace and fight against our dark thoughts. We must find peace. America, its Allies must hold their fire Retaliating and attacking a country goes against global goal of reaching world peace David Stell Staff Editor shouston@durhamregion.com BY JACQUIE McINNES Staff Writer DURHAM —Prayers, blood, money and manpow- er. Durham residents and government officials are giv- ing their all to aid the vic- tims of Tuesday’s terrorist attacks in the United States. “We’ve had close to 1,500 calls so far,” said Sharon Walker of the Durham branch of the Cana- dian Red Cross on Thursday morning. The Red Cross is co-ordinating volunteer ef- forts in the Region as well as accepting donations of money. The Durham branch is accepting cheque, credit card and cash donations and, beginning today (Friday) all major banks were expected to begin accepting donations on behalf of the Red Cross also, she said, adding a do- nation total was not avail- able at press time Thursday. “Locally about 30 volun- teers are on alert,” said Ms. Walker. “They are highly- trained disaster response volunteers,” with skills in a variety of administrative ca- pacities including logistics, shelter management, public relations, food provision and volunteer co-ordination. “They are all registered volunteers with the Red Cross for a number of years and have gone through ad- vanced disaster training with us,” said Ms. Walker, who noted they have been dis- patched into disaster areas before, including the Que- bec ice storm and the Mani- toba floods. The volunteers have not yet been called to action but Ms. Walker anticipates they may be soon, particularly those specializing in logis- tics. Durham residents have also been offering their ser- vices and there is some need for people to help at the Durham Red Cross office, fielding calls and sending thank-you notes, she said. Anyone who would like to contact the Red Cross to offer office assistance or to make a financial donation can reach the Durham office at: 419 King St. W., Suite 115, Oshawa, Ontario L1J 2K5. Durham educators were in- structed to deal with individual students’concerns and fears as they arose, and that work was continuing the day after the tragedy. Several local students have personal links to what oc- curred in New York City, when terrorist-controlled jetliners crashed into the World Trade Center, toppling the city’s highest buildings and killing, it is believed, several thousand. “I had a little girl this morn- ing come in from a Grade 2 class, who has two aunts in New York, in tears,” said Maret Sadem-Thompson, principal at Ritson Public School in Os- hawa, in an interview Wednes- day morning. She explained the student was upset because her family has not been able to reach their relatives. Ms. Sadem-Thompson telephoned the girl’s family and after speaking with her the student was much bet- ter and able to return to class. “She stopped crying and knew she could come back (to the office) any time and (her family) would come and get her,” she said. Flags at all public and Catholic schools in Durham Region were fly- ing at half-mast Wednesday and were likely to remain so for the rest of the week. A moment of silence was observed in public schools Wednesday morning, and Catholic students prayed for victims and caregivers involved in the tragedy. Ms. Sadem-Thompson said it’s a fine line between answering stu- dents’ questions and reassuring them, but not scaring them. “You don’t want to shut kids down but you also want to balance it as a professional so kids aren’t frightened by it,” she said. Older children had more ques- tions because they went home for lunch, knew more about what had happened and are better able to form questions, said Ms. Sadem-Thomp- son. “They had questions about whether they’re safe and if this will happen here.” At St. Mary Catholic Sec- ondary School, principal Mike Bak said the students heard and saw the news with “shock” and “sadness. “They were tremendously, I think, affected by the circum- stances and they’re very, very concerned about what was going to happen and what had hap- pened,” he said. “They certainly wanted details and a number of the classes spent some time in our (communications/technolo- gy) area, watching with their teachers the happenings of the day.” Two of those students were Ei- lene Amurao and Ciji Morota, both in Grade 12, who said many students watched the events on television, silently. “It’s just so incredible to see peo- ple jumping from the highest build- ing,” Eilene said, adding it was “sad” to know they were jumping to their deaths to avoid suffering from flames and smoke. Grant Andrews, Durham Catholic District School Board edu- cation director, on Wednesday morning e-mailed principals sug- gesting prayers and scriptures for morning announcements, a letter principals could send home with students, advice for schools on how to respond to kids’ concerns and questions, and other resource mater- ial. The Durham District School Board Wednesday sent a one-page letter home with students Wednes- day afternoon, offering advice for parents on how to make sense of the tragedy for young people and help them deal with it. Parents are ad- vised to use “straightforward terms” that kids can understand when ex- plaining what has happened, to be willing to talk about a child’s fears and worries and to keep family rou- tines as regular as possible. The board’s crisis response team, comprised of social workers and other student support staff, is avail- able to help principals and teachers help students deal with the tragedy. High school students like Ciji Morota (left) and Eilene Amurao joined others who followed the day of terror on televi- sion. Durham Muslims put out call to help victims of U.S. attack BY MARTIN DERBYSHIRE Staff Writer PICKERING —Shocked and saddened by Tuesday’s terrorist at- tacks on the U.S., Muslim leaders in Pickering are asking the public not to pin the actions of individuals on an entire religious group. Kazim Qureshi, a member of the Pickering Islamic Centre’s board of trustees, said he is fearful people may look to place the blame on all Muslims, since terror- ist Osama bin Laden, who has re- portedly in the past called for Mus- lims worldwide to kill Americans and their allies, is being named in connection with Tuesday’s attacks. “Muslims are not to blame,” he said. “There are bad people in every religion, in every culture and every society... it is individuals who do these things and we do not share their views.” He said he was reminded of the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, when Muslims across North Amer- ica became targets for a confused public looking to place blame and noted an Islamic centre in Oshawa was the site of some acts of van- dalism following Tuesday’s events. “It’s a hate-crime offence,” said Sergeant Paul Malik, spokesman for Durham Regional Police, of the rocks and a Molotov cocktail thrown at the Oshawa Islamic Cen- tre. He said it’s unknown if the inci- dent was in response to Tuesday’s attack on the U.S. About 4:15 p.m., a rock was thrown at the central Oshawa building, resulting in a broken win- dow. At 11 p.m., a flaming beer bottle was thrown at the building. The bottle landed against a fence and only burned some grass. At least two other broken beer bottles were spotted near the fence and an unbroken bottle was inside the fence on a gravel yard Wednesday morning, police reported. Sgt. Malik said some people were seen in the area but there are no suspects. Mr. Qureshi said more than 500 Muslim families involved with the Islamic Centre on Brock Road North are mourning the deaths of the innocent victims and stressed they have been affected by the tragedy as well. “We are Canadians, North Americans as much as anybody else,” he said. “I have many friends with businesses in Man- hattan, some of which I’ve spo- ken with, others I am very dis- turbed about... Muslims, every- body is in the same boat.” The Islamic Centre is asking members of the Muslim communi- ty to donate blood to the survivors and make financial donations to the Canadian Red Cross to aid the victims and clean-up ef- fort. “We are a strong part of the community,” Mr. Qureshi said. “Any way we can help, be it money, blood, or volunteers, we will.” P PAGE 8 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, September 14, 2001 hospital has set up a command centre ready to jump into ac- tion should any support for the U.S. be needed. Katie Cronin-Wood, public relations spokesman for the hospital, said they are on “standby, ready to be called upon if anything should come out of the United States.” If hospitals in Toronto are called in by New York authori- ties to provide assistance, she said the hospital could see an influx of patients through a domino effect. Attack on America... Kazim Qureshi: ‘We are Canadians, North Americans.’ Durham students look for answers News was good on a day filled with tragedy And so throughout the day, Ms. Farrow reassured all the children from grades 1 through to 8. “I went into every classroom and showed pictures I’d taken off the Internet. We talked about the people there having fire drills and that we were safe here in Oshawa.” Ms. Farrow lived just outside New York City until she was 20- years-old, when she chose to relo- cate in Ontario. But her heart was back in the land of her youth Tues- day until she received a “wonder- ful” phone call at about 3 p.m. Both her sister and brother were alive and well and accounted for. “Mr brother James was within site of it, the World Trade Center,” she was told by her mother. “He was standing on the roof (of the building he works in) when the second plane hit. My sister (Jeanette) also saw the second aircraft. She works within, if you have a good arm, a ball’s throw away from the World Trade Center. She saw the second plane and was suddenly scurrying down 29 flights of stairs.” Greatly relieved, Ms. Farrow credits the children of Mary Street School and a teacher she had 38 years ago for helping her get through the infamous day, Sept. 11. The society holds its fourth annual SuperWalk for Parkinson’s on Sunday, Sept. 23. For the first time, two walks are being held in Durham, one in Ajax and the other in Oshawa. Participants have the choice between a two-kilo- metre route or a seven-kilometre route. “We thought the area was large enough to give us a bit more cover- age,” said Jean Keary, president of the Durham chapter. “Also, we have a lot of members from Oshawa.” This is the fourth walk in Ajax and the first in Oshawa, she noted. She noted other groups hold walks in two locations and “we want to see how it went to have two.” Last year 30 walkers took part and raised just over $6,000. “We’d like to either double or triple (the amount raised),” Mrs. Keary said. This is the 10th year the Parkinson Society Canada is holding walks across the country. Funds from the event are used to support local initia- tives and for research in finding a cure. Durham walk co-ordinator Brian Quin said some of the money raised here goes towards research in finding a cure and some is used to sustain exist- ing programs offered by the local soci- ety. “Our primary motivation here is to raise money for research,” he said, noting the slogan is ‘walking towards a cure: pledging to make a difference’. The Durham SuperWalk for Parkin- son’s starts at Oshawa City Hall and at Ajax Town Hall. Registration begins at 1 p.m. in both locations and the walk- ing gets under way at 1:30 p.m. Walkers can register prior to the day by calling Fidelity Security at 1- 866-768-5947 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Oshawa Mayor Nancy Diamond and Ajax Mayor Steve Parish are the hon- orary chairmen for the walks in their communities. Mrs. Keary joined the so- ciety six years ago when her husband Charles was diag- nosed with the disease. Charles is “doing quite well at the moment. His medication is working at the moment. He’s doing quite well. He gets out and walks,” she said. “He gets out and does things. He wants to do the seven-kilo- metre walk.” Mr. Quin began feeling the effects of the disease in 1989 and has been on med- ication for five years. For more information on the walk, call Mrs. Keary at 905-619-1469 or Mr. Quin at 905-428-2266. Jean and Charles Keary take a stroll in preparation for the Su- perWalk for Parkinson’s re- search. Mrs. Keary is president of the Durham chapter of the Parkinson Society. Her husband was diagnosed with the disease in 1995. The Youth Centre is offering the group for teens 13 and 14 years old, giving them the oppor- tunity to examine aggressive be- haviour, increasing awareness of the behaviour and its impact. They’ll also identify their own anger management styles and triggers, along with a variety of new management skills. A group format is used, so par- ticipants can learn from each other and offer support. There’s also the chance to enjoy leisure time in the centre’s activity room. The group runs for six weeks on Thursdays starting Oct. 18. All potential participants are required to attend an intake session on Thursday, Oct. 4 from 5 to 6 p.m. Parents or guardians must attend a session without their child on Thursday, Oct. 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. All group sessions run from 5 to 7 p.m. at the centre, 360 Bayly St., between Westney Road and Finley Avenue, in Ajax. Congratulations Bryan & Riyad, for being our Carriers of the Week. It’s amazing what can happen with a little teamwork. Soccer It’s the world’s most popular sport, and no wonder – it helps to teach confidence and teamwork, all in a fun environment. That’s why Tim Hortons was proud to put our name on the jerseys of 1466 kids that participated in the Timbits Soccer program in the Durham area this year. Thanks to everyone who helped our kids aim for their goals. Tim Hortons Summer Swim Tim Hortons Summer Swim added a splash of free fun all summer. Your local Tim Hortons provided a complimentary block of time each week at local public swimming pools. Your kids laughed. They made new friends. And you didn't have to dip into your wallet. Summer Sports Providing jerseys and medals for kids’ minor league teams are just a few examples of how we cheer for our young local heroes. This year’s Durham Timbits T-Ball, Football and Lacrosse programs were great ways to help kids learn fair play while having fun. Here are just three of the ways we’ve been busy serving the Durham area over the past little while. ® RAMNOR Heating & Air Conditioning A Controlled Comfort Air Co. 1621 McEwen Unit 8 Whitby 905•434•5541 or 905•434•5541 SERVICING DURHAM SINCE 1965 SERVICING DURHAM SINCE 1965 Pickering Home & Leisure Centre Hwy. 401 & Brock Rd. What a summer! It’s been great for B.B.Q’s, dips in the backyard pool, visits to the cottage and sunny days on the golf course. With all the sunshine it has been great for plant growth provided extra water was given to com- bat the extra evapora- tion. With the cooler days ahead of us, it’s time to get out of the air condi- tioning and stressful world news and “dive” into your gardens. “Spruce” up your gardens with a splash of fall colour. Plant fall mums, ornamental grasses, colourful cab- bages and kale this week. Purchase spring bloom- ing daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and crocus’ now while the selection is at its best.Try the new tulip “pretty women” (deep red). To really enjoy your garden, plan ahead. Think about those spectacular splash- es of colour, spring bulbs will add to your garden next spring. Thinking about good thoughts, why not plant a few spring bulbs at a loved ones cemetery plot or at your child’s school. I’m sure your local church could also benefit from the planting of some spring flowering bulbs. September is a busy time at the garden centre. Things to work on this week: •Planting of ever- greens, shrubs & trees •Over seeding your lawns •Fertilizing and spraying your lawns (grub control) •Adding perennial plants like hostas and grasses to your gardens •Planting spring flowering bulbs (tulips and daffodils) •Ordering your fire- wood for delivery •Adding a bird feeder (in preparation for winter) •Bring tropical patio plants (like: hibiscus, madervillas, Oleanders) in for the winter before cold nights hit these deli- cate plants (spray for bugs first) •Purchase a new rake and clear leaf bags •Build a new gar- den bed for next year (adding triple mix soil, genesis compost and peat moss) •Take advantage of fall specials such as 40% off selected outdoor pots (again pre-planning for next spring) •Take an hour to enjoy the hammock and read a book Treating your gar- dens and lawns as thera- peutic enjoyment rather than a chore will greatly reduce the stress built up during the week. Come and visit us at the Pine Ridge Garden Gallery for timely and accurate gardening infor- mation and of course great plants. We offer a horticul- tural consulting service and a design service that will see one of our experts come right to your house. Stop in this week to inquire about these services. The sophisti- cated homeowner can express that good taste through a well coordinated room.” Being a factory and understanding the many facets of how to put togeth- er the variety of products that satisfy a particular taste in decor, the cus- tomer’s needs are what their well trained and focused staff have been doing all of their lives. So come and enjoy The Room With a View and brighten up your home with something new. Invest in your Foundation and Repair Those Leaks Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons has been successfully repairing leaking basements for over 24 years and although he says, “I’m still learning,” he estimates he has been in close to 15,000 homes and seen virtually every possible leaking situa- tion one can imagine. Gordon says, “basically, the amount of years I’ve been in this business has forced me to develop hun- dreds of different techniques to successfully solve every sit- uation I’ve encountered”. He also says that “having an extensive background in spe- cialty products for concrete, I know which products to use and which ones really work, that’s why I can offer a 10 year full guarantee on all the work I do”. Gordon prides his com- pany on fast, neat and efficient service. He also prides himself on his troubleshooting ability. “I like to professionally solve problems at the least most rea- sonable cost to the customer. Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perime- ter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles but that is because it is absolutely neces- sary. What I won’t do is quote on an expensive excavation type repair when I know a simple little interior injec- tion will solve the problem. Give me a solid concrete foundation and 90% of the time I can inject the problem with polyurethane by standing on the inside and pumping right through the wall. Block foundations should be repaired from the outside but I try to isolate the problem within 10-15 ft. to minimize the excavation necessary.” Gordon says “home owners should invest in their foundations in much the same way they invest in their roofs. Water corrodes and very quickly. The same way a leak in your roof starts cor- roding the wooden rafters, a leak through your foundation starts to under- mine the very integrity of your home. People tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one. Catch it early enough and possibly save your- self a fortune.” Gordon goes on to say that “no job is too big or too small and I can promise you a fair and objective evaluation of the problem.” For a free professional evalua- tion call Gordon at 905-686-6880. Beware those in The Glass House Following are the new movie releases being screened this weekend at cinemas in Ajax and Pickering. THE GLASS HOUSE Starring Leelee Sobieski, Trevor Morgan, Rita Wilson, Michael O’Keefe, Diane Lane, Stellan Skarsgard. Directed by Daniel Sack- heim. When Ruby (Sobieski) and her younger brother Rhett’s (Trevor Morgan) parents, Grace and Dave Baker (Wil- son, O’Keefe), are killed in a car crash, their parents’ best friends, Erin and Terry Glass (Lane, Skarsgard), become their guardians. Ruby and Rhett are promised a world of opulence and California fun — all they have to do is move into the Glasses’ gated house in pic- turesque Malibu. But, in this taut psycholog- ical thriller, trust can be as transparent as The Glass House. Before long, Ruby suspects Erin and Terry may not be the ideal guardians they seem to be. But, are her suspicions jus- tified or merely the percep- tions of a rebellious teen with a fertile imagination? (Cineplex-Odeon Ajax 10 Cinemas, Famous Players Pickering 8 - Pickering Town Centre). Hardball Starring: Keanu Reeves, Diane Lane, Michael Jordan, John Hawkes, Stephen Cinabro. Directed by Brian Robbins. An aimless young man (Reeves) can’t seem to stop gambling, drinking, and scalp- ing tickets, even though all his friends are settling down and making good money at legiti- mate jobs. Desperate for cash, he se- cures a loan from an acquain- tance by agreeing to coach the little league team of the Cabri- ni Green housing projects in Chicago. His new job gives him pur- pose, and he starts to turn his life around. (Cineplex-Odeon Ajax 10 Cinemas, Famous Players Pickering 8 - Pickering Town Centre). For a complete listing of what’s playing this weekend in Ajax and Pickering, contact your local cinema. All is not as it seems in The Glass House, with rising star Leelee Sobies- ki taking a leading turn in the thriller. It’s playing this weekend at cine- mas in Ajax and Pickering. DURHAM ––After three years of surpluses, the Os- hawa-Durham Symphony Orchestra ended the 2000- 2001 year with a $5,000 deficit. But outgoing president Bill Swan predicts a bright future. Swan attributed the deficit to the cost of school concerts and an expensive perfor- mance of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ in December. “In the days when art or- ganizations are struggling, the ODSO is in a strong posi- tion,” said Swan. “The orchestra is poised to explode with the growth of the audience, the number of performances and activities, and critical attention,” he added. In the 1999-2000 season the orchestra had a surplus of $34,604. Last year the ODSO held performances in the Sal- vation Army Temple, a 400- seat auditorium so subscrip- tion sales were limited. With a new 1,000-seat venue at the Calvary Baptist Church and increased advertising, the or- chestra has already doubled subscription sales. For more information call Bill Swan at 905-434-7183 or email him at wgm- swan@home.com. Symphony runs small deficit in 2000-01 Pickering Dairy Queen 1099 Kingston Rd. L1V 1B5 (905) 831-2665 DRIVE THRU P L A Y LPA A C E WHERE’S THE BEEF ! ? Is it just me or are the patties and buns getting smaller on a lot of burgers these days? Oh yes the signature burger is big but what about everything else? TRUE VALUE is something we all say we want, even insist on, but I wonder with the tempting way fast food is presented all over the TV whether we really care sometimes WHAT SIZE WE GET or HOW MUCH IT COSTS or HOW IT TASTES. If it’s hot and filling then you’re happy. You see a juicy looking burger on TV and that picture is burned into your mind and you want it! One of the things I’m sold on at Dairy Queen is that the corporation does it’s homework. The hamburgers we sell at the Pickering Dairy Queen have it all when it comes to VALUE, SIZE and TASTE. Check and see if you agree. First the regular Dairy Queen burger is 2.7 OUNCES. Every day, every month, every year. I challenge you to find a bigger regular burger at a better price. Our double cheeseburger is a third of a pound which blows away any quarter pounder. Over a third of a pound of pure beef! Second, you can have all the fresh toppings you want, the way you want it, ABSOLUTELY FREE. Lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, mayo, ketchup, mustard and relish. On every burger no extra charge! We don’t put your condiments on in advance. It takes a little longer but it’s worth it! The way you want it! Third, at Wendy’s and McDonalds they fry their burgers. At the DQ we FLAME BROIL the burgers. You can instantly taste the difference in a DQ burger because of the incredible beef flavour. Fourth, you can have your CHOICE OF BUNS whether it’s our toasted sesame seed buns or our fresh 100% whole wheat buns. It’s your choice at no extra charge. Fifth, when you order a combo burger value meal (burger, fries and drink) at our store you can add a 2.19 DQ sundae, with over 30 delicious toppings, for ONLY 99 CENTS. The coin you are given to redeem your sundae is good that day or any day, any month, any year! It’s time to compare and see if you are really getting VALUE for your hard earned dollar. Add to that the great staff and the clean store as well as the best desserts in the world and you have REAL VALUE. Dairy Queen has done it’s homework. Now we just have to get the word out. High moisture levels in the air from autumn’s high precipitation levels are present in the form of acid rain from now until winter. During the course of a 12 month period, acid rain is the single most contributing factor in the corrosion process. Moisture from condensation in the fall and winter has the highest of acid levels because of the concentration of ground level pollutants. The rate at which steel rusts doubles for every 5 degrees above zero Celcius. Consequently, one should never underestimate the importance of rust proofing before the snow and salt hit the roads. Annually certified technicians at Krown Body Maintenance apply an environmentally safe, solvent-free formula that dispels moisture from metal and sets up a corrosion resistant surface. Krown’s low viscosity formulation is capable of penetrating hard to reach areas that effect the vehicle’s structural integrity such as metal folds, seams, and spot welds. It helps to lubricate fasteners, brake cables and power window mechanisms, but will not damage plastics, paint or fabrics, nor will it void your new car warranty. Krown is the only national program endorsed by the APA (Automobile Protection Association), a non-profit auto industry watchdog. Krown offers the best new car warranty with no mileage or time limitations (ask for details). Krown is also the exclusive distributor of LUMINATE, an acclaimed 2 step polish & paint protector. Founded in 1986, Krown Body Maintenance has become Canada’s #1 rust control organization. Krown is a Canadian company that is an Owner-Dealer co-operative, with over 240 dealers across Canada. Krown has served Pickering since July 1986, and is operated by dealer Wendell Gaudin who acquired the business 5 years ago. Call Krown today for your appointment, and ask about their corporately backed national warranty program.1550 Kingston Rd., Pickering (905) 839-9637 (1 block west of Brock Rd.) 1801 Dundas St. E., Whitby (905) 404-1818 (Kendalwood Park Plaza) Sylvan Learning Centres are a network of more than 1600 sites across the world providing instructional services to students of all ages and skill levels. NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY EDITION, September 14, 2001 PAGE 23 P P PAGE 24 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, September 14, 2001 Sports &LEISURE NEWS ADVERTISER SEPTEMBER 14, 2001 Opening night less than stellar for Pickering Panthers Missed chances, mistakes combine for 3-0 loss PICKERING —A hot goal- tender, missed scoring chances and youthful mistakes added up to a loss for the Pickering Boyer Pontiac Pan- thers Wednesday night. The rookie-laden Panthers were burned for power-play and short- handed markers in a 3-0 loss to the neighbouring Ajax Axemen in the club’s OHA Ontario Provincial Ju- nior ‘A’ Hockey League South Con- ference regular-season home opener at the Pickering Recreation Complex. Despite a closely contested game, the Panthers were their own worst en- emies, said Pickering general manag- er Cliff Long, noting mistakes came back to haunt them against a veteran Axemen club. But, mostly, the main culprit in the loss was second-year Ajax goaltender Craig Neilson, who turned back 45 shots. “There were a couple of mistakes. We kind of beat ourselves,” said Long. “But, their kid, Neilson, was outstanding. We had some opportuni- ties around the net, but I guess it was- n’t our night.” With two Panthers off with penal- ties, Ajax scored a power-play goal at the 8:22 mark of the second period. It was Tyler McGregor’s first of two goals on the night. Ajax opened up a two-goal lead in the third period on a goal by Jody Mitchell. The Panthers’ best chance to get on the scoreboard came at the mid- way point of the third stanza. With two Axemen in the penalty box, Pick- ering failed to capitalize on the five- on-three advantage. In fact, later in the power play, McGregor scored a short-handed marker to put the proverbial nail in the coffin. If there was one silver lining for the Panthers, it was that they outshot the visitors 45-35. The Panthers play their second game of the junior schedule tonight (Friday) at Markham against the Waxers. On Sunday, Pickering travels to Scarborough for a date with the Wex- ford Raiders at 7 p.m. Then, on Mon- day, the Panthers play the Vipers in Vaughan at 7:15 p.m. A.J. PICKERING —The Pickering Red Sox minor pee- wee rep baseball team was a semifinalist at the Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) Championships in Niagara Falls over the Labour Day weekend. Playing five games in two days, two requiring extra in- nings, the Sox were in tough against Barrie in the semifi- nal contest in the eight-team tourney. With Barrie in the lead entering the bottom of the sev- enth inning, Pickering cut the lead to one run with the tying and winning runs on base. A fine defensive play by Barrie derailed the Red Sox’s rally attempt in a narrow 3-2 loss. In the quarter-finals, Pickering drew the difficult task of playing the Toronto champs — East York. With the game tied 4-4, Pickering brought in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Impressive Red Sox pitching and defence helped shut down East York. Pickering opened the OBA tournament against Barrie, eking out a 6-5 victory in extra innings. The Red Sox exacted a measure of revenge over the Windsor Expos in Game 2. After having lost a tournament championship to the Expos earlier in the season, Pickering was up to the task this time, hammering Windsor 11-3. Pickering lost its first game of the tournament, a 4-3 extra-inning affair to Guelph in Game 3. The Red Sox qualified for the OBAs after sweeping last year’s champion Whitby in an exciting two-game series. Team members are Robert Carman, Kevin Haggarty, Travis Hendry, Mark Hoyne, Kyle Kotchie, Michael Mc- Farlane, Ross Norman, Daniel Pineau, Stan Pon, Matthew Redding, Chris Rose and Ryan Turner.
