Pickering traffic study must focus on
more than cars, residents say
BY SUSAN O’NEILL
Staff Writer
PICKERING — A traffic study designed to in-
crease safety on local streets has to focus on the needs of
residents, pedestrians and cyclists and not just motorists
and commuters, community members told City staff
Wednesday.
Pickering is in the process of developing a ‘safer
streets traffic management strategy’in an effort to guide
the municipality in its future use of stop signs and traf-
fic lights, as well as the installa-
tion of traffic-calming measures
like speed humps and setting
speed limits.
“Traffic concerns represent the
number-one complaint we’re re-
ceiving from residents,” Stephen
Brake, Pickering’s co-ordinator of
traffic and waste management,
told a crowd of roughly 50 people
gathered in the City’s council
chambers to provide input on a
draft report.
“We want to have a safer sys-
tem of roads that will allow peo-
ple and goods to move safely,” Mr.
Brake said.
However, residents said traffic
movement isn’t the only factor
that needs to be considered.
“The whole focus of the report
is on moving cars,” Fairport Road
resident Gayle Clow told City staff, noting that approach
will “keep Pickering as a bedroom community... we
need to make it a vibrant community.”
Ms. Clow pointed out the City needs to encourage
walking by creating pedestrian-friendly streets.
“I encourage you to view the streets as something
more than a way to move cars,” she said, adding Picker-
ing’s approach to her street has turned it into a freeway
in recent years.
The creation of the safer streets strategy was in fact
sparked by concerns over traffic issues on Fairport when
a group of approximately 20 residents submitted a peti-
tion to council last year calling for the speed limit to re-
main at 40km/h.

PICKERING —May wasn’t a good
month at the Pickering Nuclear Generat-
ing Station, as five of eight performance
indicator targets set by Ontario Power
Generation (OPG) weren’t met.
The only targets met or bettered were
the number of unplanned reactor shut-
downs, the radiation dose to the public,
and the number of preventable spills.
May report card results were as fol-
lows, for the first five months of 2001,
except for measurements that are quar-
terly, as indicated:
• In an index reflecting 11 industry
standard performance measures set by
the World Association of Nuclear Oper-
ators (for the first quarter of 2001) —
72.2 per cent, worse than OPG’s target
of 76.2 per cent, and short of the indus-
try benchmark of 96 per cent. It’s a 0.2-
point decrease over the fourth quarter of
2000. The most significant factor for
missing the target was a 24-day un-
planned outage on Unit 7 in January and
February. The performance index is
measured quarterly;
• Public safety levels 1 and 2 events
reportable to the Canadian Nuclear Safe-
ty Commission — four, worse than the
year-to-date target of two. A Level 2
event is defined as significant. The May
events were due to the unavailability of a
boiler feed pump and “impairments” to
an electrical system;
• ‘Reactor trips’or the number of un-
planned automatic reactor shutdowns
per 7,000 hours — 0, better than the
OPG target and industry standard of one
trip per 7,000 hours;
• Capability factor or the amount of
energy capable of being produced per
month as a percentage of perfect perfor-
mance — 75.1 per cent, worse than the
OPG goal of 75.8 per cent and below the
industry median of 90.6 per cent;
• Radiation dose to the public from
both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ stations — 0.7 mi-
crosieverts (µSv), an international unit of
measurement, bettering the first quarter-
ly target of 2.5 µSv. The dose is signifi-
cantly below the regulatory limit of
1,000 µSv. The radiation dose is mea-
sured quarterly;
• Major and moderate preventable
spills — zero, meeting the goal of zero;
• Industrial safety accident rate, the
number of accidents per 200,000 work
hours that result in lost work time, re-
stricted-work injuries or fatalities —
0.37, worse than the OPG target of 0.30
and above the industry median of 0.1;
• Accident severity rate or the number
of days lost for injuries per 200,000
hours worked — 3.57, worse than the
OPG goal of 3.4.

PICKERING —The
public’s radiation expo-
sure from the Pickering
Nuclear Generating Sta-
tion during the first quar-
ter of 2001 was “extreme-
ly low”, says the Canadi-
an Nuclear Safety Com-
mission (CNSC).
For the three-month
period ending March 31,
the dose from the station
was 1.1 microsieverts,
which is below the regula-
tory limit of 1,000 µSv
per year. (A microsievert
is an international unit
used to measure radiation
doses.) Measurements are
recorded on a quarterly
basis.
By comparison, a typi-
cal chest X-ray produces
about 70 µSv, while
someone flying to Van-
couver from Toronto and
then back would be ex-
posed to about 20 µSv
from cosmic radiation.
The radiation dose due
to emissions are for a per-
son living just outside the
boundary of the station,
staying at their residences
24 hours a day, drinking
local water and eating lo-
cally-produced food.
The CNSC reports
most people would re-
ceive a lower dose, be-
cause they have different
eating habits and live fur-
ther away from the sta-
tion. The amount of radia-
tion significantly decreas-
es as the distance from the
station increases.
More than 90 per cent
of the radiation dose
comes from air emissions.
By comparison, the
dose from the Darlington
station in Clarington for
the same period was 0.6
µSv, and from the Bruce
station it was 0.9 µSv.

City residents
seek broader
traffic study
“Fairport Road is one of the most
difficult roads to deal with,” said
Richard Holborn, the division head of
municipal property and engineering,
noting the street is classified as an arte-
rial road in Pickering’s Official Plan,
but has a 40km/h speed limit. The speed
limit on arterials roads is usually higher.
“We’re hoping to come up with
some solutions,” he told residents.
“We’re trying to deal with all the users
of roads.”
Other concerns raised by residents
included the use of speed humps on
local streets.
Rougemount Drive resident Simon
Hunter said the speed humps installed
on his street in 1996 are nothing more
than a nuisance for motorists, while
Whitevale resident Lloyd Thomas, pres-
ident of the Whitevale Residents and
Districts Association, said the speed
humps in his community have been a
“tremendous success” in slowing traf-
fic.
“There isn’t a one-size-fits-all (an-
swer to addressing traffic concerns),”
Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice
Brenner said following the meeting,
noting the residents who live in the
community often know what’s best for
their street.
A second public meeting on the traf-
fic study is being held in the council
chambers at the Civic Complex at 7
p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19. The re-
port will then be submitted to council
for consideration in October or Novem-
ber.

Basketball player gets nine months in shooting melee
BY STEPHEN SHAW
Staff Writer
OSHAWA —A disputed foul
during a game of pickup basket-
ball between teams from Picker-
ing and Scarborough sparked an
explosion of violence that ended
with a 22-year-old Ajax man shot
four times with a 357-Magnum
handgun in the gymnasium at
Pine Ridge High School, court
has heard.
Teran Richards survived three
bullets in the back and one in the
elbow.
On Thursday, a young man
charged in connection with the
April 3 bloodshed was sentenced
to nine months in jail after plead-
ing guilty to assault and drug
charges. Court was told by pros-
ecutor Paul Murray that during
the evening basketball game tem-
pers flared and Pickering player
Al Nabe got into an argument
with Scarborough player Tyshon
Riley, 18, over a disputed foul.
Mr. Riley punched Mr. Nabe
in the face and bloodied his nose,
prompting Mr. Richards, a Pick-
ering teammate, to confront Mr.
Riley.
While Mr. Richards was try-
ing to speak with Mr. Riley, an-
other man who had attended the
school along with Mr. Riley, but
was watching as a spectator,
pulled out a handgun and opened
fire, the Crown attorney said.
The gunman fired one round,
hitting Mr. Richards in the arm,
then four more, with three of the
bullets striking the victim in the
back, court was told.
A fifth bullet grazed the head
of a 15-year-old girl who was
watching.
Court heard Mr. Riley fled
with the alleged gunman and a
third man in a Pontiac Sunfire
and was later arrested following a
car chase and a collision.
Mr. Riley has pleaded guilty
to assault, in relation to the alter-
cation with Mr. Nabe prior to the
shooting, possession of crack co-
caine, possession of crime pro-
ceeds, possession of stolen prop-
erty and breach of recognizance.
Mr. Riley testified he had
nothing to do with the shooting
of Mr. Richards and at no time
that night handled a 357-Mag-
num - the weapon used in the
shooting - or a 45-calibre pistol
also found near the crash scene.
Nor did he witness Mr.
Richards being shot or see the
triggerman, Mr. Riley answered
while under brief cross-examina-
tion by Mr. Murray.
Court heard Mr. Riley fled on
foot from the car after it rear-
ended another vehicle and
crashed at Taunton and Altona
roads. He entered a shed where
he was cornered by a farmer’s
dogs and held until the police ar-
rived. A second Scarborough man, the
alleged driver who was arrested in a
field, is still before the courts on charges,
including attempted murder.
Court heard Mr. Riley was in posses-
sion of an ‘eight-ball’ of crack cocaine,
3.8 grams or an eighth of an ounce,
$1,300 cash proceeds from earlier drug
transactions and a cell phone. At the
time he was under a court order not to
possess any illicit drugs, drug parapher-
nalia or cellphone.
Judge David Stone, of Ontario Court
of Justice, Oshawa, said Mr. Riley’s
worst crime was his continued involve-
ment “in the drug sub-culture.”
Mr. Riley was not directly involved in
the shooting of Mr. Richards nor did he
provide the weapon, said the judge while
addressing the assault charge.
“He punches a guy and he has plead-
ed guilty... How can you predict from
that there is going to be a shooting,” said
defence lawyer James Grosberg, who
added his client wants to finish school
and work as a carpenter.
Mr. Riley was credited with serving
eight-months pre-sentence custody and
ordered to spend one more month in jail.
He was also given two-years probation
with conditions to stay away from Pine
Ridge and not possess drugs.

land said Monday, noting the entrance,

rently difficult for boaters to navigate
because of high levels of sedimenta-
tion.
“Unless it’s dredged on a very con-
sistent basis, it’s almost impassable for
boats.”
Coun. Holland said the entrance
into Frenchman’s Bay needs to be
widened and reconfigured in a way
that will reduce the sedimentation.
That’s a project that could cost rough-
ly $2 million, he noted.
However, Coun. Holland reported
public funding can’t be secured for the
project unless the entranceway is trans-
ferred into public ownership.
“We can’t get public funds for a pri-
vate entrance,” he reported. “This
meeting will hopefully be a first step
towards advancing that agenda... in
seeing the land come into public own-
ership.”
PHC president Harold Hough said
Monday if transferring the ownership
of the entranceway into public hands is
a requirement to get the improvements
started, “we’re willing to comply.
“We would like to see the perma-
nent fix for the channel entrance. I
think it is the key to a vibrant water-
front.” Mr. Hough added, “There’s no
point in creating a marina village
(along Liverpool Road) if mariners are
precluded from coming in here be-
cause that channel is inadequate... we
want to be able to advertise that we
have the safest channel in the Great
Lakes.”
Meanwhile, David Steele, who
chaired a mayor’s waterfront task force
that recommended the improvements,
said the entrance into the Bay has been
poor for years, noting there are signs
posted informing boaters the entrance-
way can be dangerous.
“I think it’s a good move. I think it’s
something that needs to happen,” he
said.

Everyone can do
their part for
women’s shelter
To the editor:
Last year Gillian Hadley’s life was taken
at the hands of her estranged husband and
we were horrified. Then, Marcia Harman
and her innocent six-year-old daughter
were brutally killed at the hands of their
husband and father.
What does this mean for a woman who
is running for her life? Where does she and
her children find a safe place now? How
many more women and children will have
to die before a safe women’s shelter is up
and running in the Ajax and Pickering area?
Where are our priorities? Please, don’t
wait until it comes to you or someone you
love. Don’t think it can’t. It’s not just some-
one else’s problem, it’s all our problem. So
let’s not wait one more day or stand on the
sidelines. We need a home now where all
are made welcome and feel safe.
If you’re reading this and it touches your
heart, don’t say ‘what can I do, I’m only
one person?’ Look inside your heart and
you will find the answer. We are all crying
out for love.
For those who ask ‘what can I do?’Well,
I collected 1,300 signatures for this project
with the help of another Pickering resident.
Please call Durham Regional Police
Constable Cheryl Carter at 905-426-1064,
Whitby-Ajax MP Judi Longfield at 905-
665-8182, Whitby-Ajax MPP Jim Flaherty
at 905-430-1141 or Pickering-Ajax-
Uxbridge MPP Janet Ecker at 905-420-
0829 and let them know we are behind
them and ask what we can do. Do it now.
I believe the government has to play a
part in this and step in.
They need to have stricter rules for
spouses who abuse.

Letters to the editor
e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com
Education Minister Janet Ecker, who has been hitting poli-
cy home runs these last few months — consider her plan to end
the extracurricular activities standoff — had another reason to
be proud this week.
The Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge MPP, who was community
and social services minister prior to taking on her current port-
folio, was on hand Thursday as her successor, John Baird,
saluted the success of Ontario Works Durham.
Ms. Ecker was the minister who ushered in the controversial
‘workfare program’ and who had to take the heat when oppo-
nents attacked it as being unfair to welfare recipients.
But half-a-decade later, Ontario Works Durham can boast of
having placed 1,524 employable welfare recipients in volun-
teer positions. The idea is to help those on welfare get off the
government rolls and into full-time jobs by providing skills
and training in exchange for a welfare cheque.
Ontario Works Durham, which looks after the program
across the region, had a goal of 1,272 placements so it actual-
ly had a success rate of 120 per cent. That excellent record
meant an additional boost of $562,000 for local programs. Mr.
Baird handed over the cheque to Brock Regional Councillor
Larry O’Connor who is chairman of the Region’s health and
social services committee.
Mr. Baird, who offered financial incentives to regions and
counties that met or surpassed placement targets, was clearly
thrilled by Durham’s success. “You really have made a huge
difference in people’s lives in Durham,” he said.
Ms. Ecker echoed the comments of her cabinet colleague.
“They’ve (staff) done a fantastic job. As the minister when the
Ontario Works program was created, I was really pleased to be
here. The new money will help staff do a better job.”
The numbers show workfare was indeed the right idea at the
right time. The Tories, who have successfully fought institu-
tionalized and long-term welfare by cutting rates, boosting the
economy and by helping recipients find jobs, are to be com-
mended for starting the program and making it work. Al-
though, some proposals, including drug and literacy testing, go
too far in singling out the most disadvantaged in society who
rely on a meagre welfare cheque for the necessities of life.
But, on balance, many hundreds of thousands of recipients
no longer live on welfare in Ontario and the fine work of Mr.
Baird and Ms. Ecker along with staffers across the province is
responsible for that.
As targets continue to be set higher, let’s hope we can come
to a day when the number of welfare cases is a tiny fraction of
the percentage it was in 1995.

Workfare clearly
working in Durham
Local success means Region has an extra
$562,000 and 1,524 reasons to take a bow
The other day, just before sup-
per, I was on the phone when my
husband ran by to the kitchen. I had
forgotten the pot was on the stove.
“Didn’t you smell it?” my hus-
band asked while he was at the sink.
He seemed a bit steamed, scrubbing
the blackened bottom of the big
saucepan. “This pot is ruined. The
bottom is bumpy.”
My face felt hot. “Don’t worry, it
has burned many times. The worst
was Elizabeth’s 16th birthday, 25
years ago,” I said.
I was a teller at the bank two
blocks from home. Two of the chil-
dren went to the local school. On
this sunny February day I planned a
nice dinner. At noon, I went home
to start the pot roast. The electric
burner was turned on high and the
meat seared on all sides in the pot
on the stovetop. I added carrots and
potatoes and turned down the heat.
As I rushed back up the hill, I
wondered if I had turned the heat
down. But I had to be back at my
wicket. At 3:35 my son stopped by
on his way from school, then he
skipped home.
Within seconds, his red face was
above the wicket. “The house,”
(puff) “is on fire.” I locked my teller
drawer and ran.
I pushed in the door. Grey,
greasy smoke. The orange and
white cat was flat on the floor gasp-
ing for breath. With my sleeve over
my nose, I went to the kitchen.
Smoke and sparks came from the
stove where the pot’s juices dripped
onto the burner. I turned off the
burner, grabbed potholders, picked
it up and rushed out the door. The
pot hissed as I put it down in the
driveway.
The kids from the front half of
the duplex tiptoed up the driveway.
They stared at the pot then bent
over and gingerly picked up the lid.
“Eeuuow”. They dropped the lid.
Five seconds later they were back to
show the blackened cinder to some
other children. “Eeuuow,” in cho-
rus.
That birthday evening was spent
at the Laundromat. The cat sur-
vived. The children and I worked to
clean up the mess.
This scrubbing of the same pot
with the bumpy bottom brought it
back to mind. Pay attention to cook-
ing. It’s a difficult task that requires
concentration. Some pots are worth
their weight, if only as a spectacle.
Fortunately, daughter forgave me.
An unwatched pot boils and burns up trouble
Pay attention to the difficult task of cooking – it requires your concentration

Golf club
attack results
in 15-month
sentence
Judge describes incident
as ‘neighbourhood
dispute that escalated
to violence’
BY STEPHEN SHAW
Staff Writer
PICKERING —A 21-year-old
Pickering man was handed a 15-
month jail sentence Monday for at-
tacking his 61-year-old neighbour
with a golf club.
Darren Dzikowski was also or-
dered to repay victim Colin Waters
$14,352 for medical bills he incurred
as a result of the injuries he suffered
when he was struck in the face with
the golf club on April 21, 2000.
The retired Appleview Road resi-
dent needed extensive dental repairs
and surgery to have the tip of his nose
reattached, prosecutor Ken Polley
said.
Judge Donald Halikowski, of On-
tario Court of Justice, Oshawa, said
the vicious attack was rooted in a sim-
mering feud between the two neigh-
bours.
“It was a culmination of a long se-
ries of petty incidents... A neighbour-
hood dispute that escalated to vio-
lence,” Judge Halikowski said.
On the day of the assault, Mr.
Dzikowski, who lives with his parents,
had been practising hitting golf balls
in his backyard, irritating his neigh-
bour who then started to make “rude
and provocative sounds”, the judge
said.
Mr. Dzikowski went to confront
the victim in his backyard and when
Mr. Waters ignored him, he swung the
club at the man’s head, court was told.
Mr. Dzikowski, who pleaded guilty
to aggravated assault, apologized to
Mr. Waters in court, saying his out-
burst of anger was “absolutely inex-
cusable.
“My behaviour was completely in-
comprehensible. I’m ashamed and
embarrassed. Words are not available
to express my sincere remorse.”
An angry Mr. Waters told Judge
Halikowski in an impact statement,
“My face has been permanently dis-
figured and I have to live with this for
the rest of my life.”
The judge said Mr. Dzikowski has
no history of violent behaviour and
the assault was “out of character”, not-
ing the young man immediately called
an ambulance for the victim. He has
also taken anger management coun-
selling.
Despite the mitigating factors, the
judge rejected Mr. Dzikowski’s
lawyer’s bid for a conditional sen-
tence, saying any acts involving “ex-
treme violence” between neighbours
must be strongly denounced by the
courts.
He also placed Mr. Dzikowski on
two-years’ probation, ordered him to
provide police with a DNA sample for
the national registry and banned him
from possessing any firearms, ammu-
nition or explosives for the next 10
years.

Making a difference transcends age
‘Exceptional’Big
Brother receives
national senior award
BY MIKE RUTA
Staff Writer
AJAX —Neville White thought
he was getting too old to be a Big
Brother. But attending the recent
Big Brothers and Sisters of Canada
annual conference opened his eyes.
The 56-year-old Ajax resident
wasn’t there long because of work
commitments. However, it was a
meaningful stop since he received
one of the five national, Nissan Big
Brother and Big Sister Senior Citi-
zenship Awards handed out by the
organization.
With his first Little Brother,
Shane, now 20, Mr. White figured
he was likely getting too old to take
on another young friend.
“What does a little guy 10 or 11
or 12 have in common with my-
self?” he remembered thinking be-
fore going to the Toronto confer-
ence. “One of the things I learned as
a result of this award is there are se-
niors across the country my age
making a contribution.”
Mr. White said he will likely be
matched with another little brother,
but that doesn’t mean his relation-
ship with his match of roughly 10
years will end. In fact it was Mr.
White’s devotion to Shane that
prompted Monique Mara, case-
worker at the Big Brothers Associa-
tion of Ajax-Pickering, to nominate
him for the national award.
While young men leave the
agency when they reach 17 years of
age, Ms. Mara said Mr. White has
kept in close contact with Shane,
who was diagnosed with leukemia
“Neville’s looked after him; he’s
been his support,” said Ms. Mara.
“(His little brother) calls him his fa-
ther. He’s an exceptional individual
in all that he’s done.”
She said this is the first time a
Big Brother with the agency, in
Ajax-Pickering for roughly 28
years, has received a national
award.
An Ajax resident for 19 years,
Mr. White described how his little
brother has changed since they first
met.
“He’s turned into a very mature
individual,” he said. “I’ve had the
pleasure of watching him grow...
from a little boy to a young man,
and a young man who’s facing
some challenges far beyond his
years. I am always constantly
amazed at how he deals with it so
well. That’s where I feel quite
proud.”
Shane is proud of Mr. White,
too. And grateful. It was his Big
Brother who rushed him to the hos-
pital when he got sick, and who was
there for him when he received the
diagnosis.
“He’s a really good guy, for
one,” said Shane, when asked what
makes Mr. White a great Big Broth-
er. “All kinds of things. He’s fun to
be around, he helps me out; he real-
ly cares.”
The youngest natural gas fitter in
the province, he said he owes it to
Mr. White. When they first hooked
up, he said the pair would go to
movies, play pool and throw a base-
ball around. As he got older, his Big
Brother, whom he dubbed Mr. Fix-
it, shared his handy-man skills with
Shane, involving him in various
projects.
When he began training as a gas
technician, Shane said he already
had a head start.
“That’s what got me into a
trade,” he said.
Mr. White said what he didn’t
realize when he joined the organi-
zation is that he would gain as
much from the experience as he
gave, learning more about life and
himself.
Big Brothers are asked to com-
mit to spending at least three or four
hours a week with their Little
Brother, but Mr. White said the two
spent more time together than that.
“It just happened,” he said. “I
never anticipated getting involved
to the extent I am.”
For more information on the Big
Brothers Association of Ajax-Pick-
ering and volunteering, call the or-
ganization at 905-686-2871.
Neville White’s involvement with the Big Brother’s organization has resulted in his being awarded
national honours. He received one of five special awards for his dedication to the program.

John Keating’s
11,000-kilometre trip
raises $1 million
BY CRYSTAL CRIMI
Staff Writer
DURHAM —One-mil-
lion dollars, 11,000 kilo-
metres and plenty of aware-
ness later, John Keating has
left a huge impact on
autism research.
The Durham Regional
Police sergeant’s 11,000-
km trip began April 27 in
New York City and ended
July 19 at 8 a.m. in San
Diego, the site of the 2001
National Conference for
the Autism Society.
Although he missed the
funding target of $10 mil-
lion, he ended up raising $1
million and a whole lot of
awareness.
“We knew that goal was
kind of stretched,” he said.
“The important part was
raising awareness and we
raised a lot of it.”
The Autism Society an-
nounced they are making
Cycle USA an annual
event, such as the Terry Fox
Run where people can raise
money and awareness in
cities on one weekend of
the year through a 10 to 20
km bike ride.
He said before he began
Cycle USA, statistics re-
vealed seven out of 10 peo-
ple didn’t even know what
autism is, but now many
more people do and can be
more inspired to help find a
cure and possibly even help
his seven-year-old son,
Kurtis.
Kurtis has autism, a de-
velopmental disability that
impedes social and com-
munication skills.
After having various
charities knock on his door,
it suddenly occurred to Sgt.
Keating that nobody ever
collected money for
autism.
Although he did a lot of
interesting things while on
his trip, what he will re-
member the most are two
boys who donated.
One boy had a lemonade
sale and raised over $20 to
give to autism research be-
cause his sister has it, and
another boy whose sister
also has autism, donated a
bag full of pennies and
change.
“Riding the bike was
challenging, but comparing
it to living with autism, it’s
not difficult at all,” he said
about the 84-day trek.
Since he has stopped rid-
ing, he said his body feels
sluggish because it has be-
come accustomed to the
workout.
He also noted it was
tough being away from
home.
“Three months is a long
time... the hardest part was
being away from my fami-
ly,” he said.
Once he called home
and his wife told him how
their six-year-old daughter
said she couldn’t remember
what his face looked like.
Sgt. Keating is catching
up with his family now on a
vacation in the U.S.
He noted he is looking
forward to getting home
and back to his job in Au-
gust.
Autism appears in the
first three years of a child’s
life and is thought to be the
result of a neurological dis-
order that effects brain
function.
There is no single cause
and no cure.

Visions of The Garden
After a long hectic day
working, running errands, tak-
ing the children to sports activi-
ties...finally you are homeward
bound and turning into your
neighbourhood and down the
street....to home.
But when you pull into
your driveway and look at no
landscaping, very little plant
material or large, overgrown
evergreens crowding into each
other, the relief of being home
may only bring on questions:
What can be done to this front
yard? What plants would pro-
vide a welcoming entrance?
How do we spruce up this
yard? Should we be talking to a
professional landscape design-
er? What does a landscape
designer do?
Hiring a landscape design-
er to draw a professional plan is
certainly an option as is creating
your own landscape design.
What will a professional
landscape designer do?
Typically the designer will meet
you at your residence and ask
questions to find out your spe-
cific requirements as far as how
much time are you willing to
commit or devote to mainte-
nance; what is your gardening
experience; what are the sun
and soil conditions; are there
plants you definitely must have
in your design or are there
colours you like more than oth-
ers.
Other questions may con-
cern your budget - is the land-
scaping achievable in one year
or due to hard landscaping such
as interlock pathways or retain-
ing walls will it take more than
one season to complete.
The landscape designer
will use all of this pertinent
information as well as the mea-
surements of your property to
do a design. The design will
include the laying out of all
appropriate plants such as trees,
evergreens, shrubs (both flow-
ering and non-flowering), roses,
and perennials. Recommendations
will also be made to do with
ponds, arbours, trellises and
benches.
A professional landscape
design will also create a wel-
coming environment when you
arrive or depart. It increases the
pride of ownership and increas-
es the overall property value of
not only your home but the
neighbourhood as well.
When your landscape
design is planted and complete
additional end benefits would
be the therapeutic nature of put-
tering in your new garden,
enjoying the fresh air and sun-
shine and socializing with the
neighbours. There will be no
more dashing into the house to
simply avoid looking at a front
yard that is lacking in plants.
Overgrown front yards
can be renovated or rejuvenated
by removing any tall, mature
evergreens and replacing them
with smaller, neater plants.
A landscape consultant
can be hired for this endeavour
and will work closely with the
homeowner to achieve their
desired garden. As well as
assisting in the selection of
plant material, the consultant
may co-ordinate a landscape
crew to do the necessary work
or give you an action plan to do
the work yourself.
Certainly the same proce-
dures and principles apply to
backyards. Other questions to
do with a backyard design may
include: are you interested in
plant material that will attract
butterflies, hummingbirds, or
birds; will you have the time to
devote to a perennial garden; is
there plans in the future to add
a swimming pool, hot tub or
gazebo.
Visit us today at Pineridge
Garden Gallery if you require
more information on our land-
scape design or consulting ser-
vices.

umn....Sit Back and ‘Vision Your

AJAX —A longtime record-
ing project is finally a fait ac-
compli for an Ajax musician.
Singer/songwriter Kamil De-
whurst released his debut CD,
‘Kamz’, four weeks ago after
recording the eight tracks on the
disc over the past two-and-a-half
years at a Scarborough studio.
“It was a part-time thing
while I was in school, but I did it
full-time this summer,” said De-
whurst, 19. “It’s nice to finally
get it done.”
‘Kamz’ was
recorded and
written in part-
nership with
Scarborough
producer Norm
Sabourin, who
also played gui-
tar on the pro-
ject. Several
backup vocalists
were also re-
cruited.
Dewhurst de-
scribes the music
as “pop with hip
hop and dance
with an R and B
flavour”.He
noted the eighth
track was a bonus track titled
‘Fire’ that featured the vocals of
his sister, Janelle, who also
wrote the song.
Experimentation with sound
and vocals was the hall-
mark of the project,
noted Dewhurst.
“We had a back-
ground track, a techno
sequence, and I
freestyled with the vo-
cals to create a song that
had really fast rapping. It hits
you over the head, it’s off the
wall, something you’ve never
heard before,” he said.

I am enjoying a Blueberry
Shake as we speak. What does a
real blueberry shake topped with
whipped cream taste like and
why whipped cream?
When I first started suggesting
shakes topped with whipped
cream to our staff one of them
said she thought whipped cream
on top of a shake wouldn’t sell.
This prompted me to make a
video for the staff to demonstrate
my point.
First I want to say that we DO
NOT USE A MILK SHAKE
MIX at our store. Yes the others
want something fast, pre-made
and they just open a spigot and
viola a shake! Sorry not us. We
make every shake from scratch.
Yes it takes more time and I
make no apologies for that. If my
customers wanted it fast and pre-
made then why are they lined up
out the door of our store time
and time again?
In the video I began by filling a
DQ cup with ice cold milk to the
fill line on the cup. This
guarantees every shake is made
the same. All our cups have fill
lines on them. Next I spiraled
our patented world famous DQ
soft serve into the cup. I then go
over to our refrigerated bank of
fruit containers (pineapple,
strawberries, blueberries and
raspberries) and ladle in a large
helping of our blueberries. I
watch those blueberries swirl
down over that smooth creamy
soft serve. Then I turn the speed
on our blizzard machine to slow
and watch as it slowly weaves
the fresh milk, blueberries and
soft serve into a smooth rich
purple blend that makes my
mouth start to water. Then I top
it with whipped cream.
Now I demonstrate how you
sip a shake topped with whipped
cream. This got oohs and ahhs. I
take my straw and push it slowly
down through the whipped
cream trapping at least a portion
of it in the straw. Now I continue
to push it down into the
blueberry shake and I take a big
sip. The blueberry shake is
drawn up the straw forcing a

The Puck & Beaver, a Canadian Pub is located at 172 Hunt Street in Ajax. The location in the past has previously been the Monkey Bar, Cloud Nine, the Treehouse, the New Treehouse and the MidKnight Dine and Dance Club. The name “The Puck
& Beaver” has an interesting origin. Since there were so many Irish, English and Scottish Pubs, we wanted to have a Canadian Pub. Canadians are known to do things in big extravagant ways, love music, as well as having a very good sense of humour.
The bar, being licensed for more than 200 people, is larger than the traditional pub but that’s the Canadian way. The name was born one day at a resort on Buckhorn Lake where friends were gathered and suggested possible names for a Canadian Pub. As
soon as “The Puck & Beaver” was suggested, when everybody stopped laughing they agreed it was the best! The name is Canadian humourous and memorable. Definitely the Canadian way. Many changes have been made for the Puck & Beaver, with
many more to come. The colour and decor are being brightened up; the new menu’s will be out shortly; and many different forms of entertainment are being planned. The food has always been good, and now it’s even better with new and interesting
menu choices. There are always daily munchie, lunch and dinner specials. Private parties and groups from 20 to 200 or more are always welcome. Food can be ordered from the menu, or we have special buffet menus available. Groups and organizations
are welcome to hold fundraising event at the Puck & Beaver. The DJ and/or Karaoke are provided free of charge for the group events. Sports teams may want to take advantage of our unique and innovative sponsorship program. Local businesses may
also want to take advantage of our unique cross promotion program, where all businesses get promoted while people have fun! The Puck & Beaver has become a fun place for people to come have fun while singing and listening to music. All
entertainment is geared toward the “Baby Boomer” crowd. It is one of the few places in Ajax that you can hear live three to nine piece band. Karaoke is a regular event of interactive entertainment that allows people to become part of the entertainment.
DJ music is always available for your listening and dancing pleasure. Traditional Pub games such as darts, pool, trivia euchre, backgammon, crib and dominos are available as well. The Puck & Beaver is always having some form of contest or events
going on as well. Things like Survivor Karaoke; Sing the Street Song; pool and dart tournaments are regular events. Be sure to check them out. We really hope you drop by. We know if you do, you’ll definitely have a great time and come back. We will
apologize now for the renovations and such going on but we are trying to make the Puck & Beaver a more enjoyable place for you. While the painting and decorating are going on though, it is business as usual with all our daily specials and fun still
taking place.

Here are some of this season’s most frequently
asked questions:
Get married in St. Lucia
Q:We may elope to St. Lucia. What can you
tell us about the Windjammer Landing Resort, or
any others there?
A:Many of the well-known, all-inclusive re-
sorts in St. Lucia (like Windjammer Landing, Le
Sport, Rendezvous, and the two Sandals resorts
located there) offer wedding packages.
At Windjammer there is a bonus of a room up-
grade if you start the marriage process here with
Alba Tours. This resort property is located in the
exceedingly romantic hillsides of St. Lucia, over-
looking Labrelotte Bay. It features 232 open-con-
cept guest rooms, which are appointed with sunny
print fabrics, rattan furniture, warm clay tiles and
ceiling fans.
Windjammer facilities include four restaurants
(an all-inclusive plan is optional), four swimming
pools, two lighted tennis courts, nightly entertain-
ment, 18-hole golf course nearby, and a secluded
beach with a water sport centre.
It is easy for Canadians to get married in St.
Lucia. Inquiries can be made at the St. Lucia
Tourist Board at 1-800-869-0377.
Q:I’ve heard just recently that one of the
cruise lines has a no-smoking ship. Do you have
more information on which one it is and where it
sails?
A:Yes, it’s the MS Paradise, the 70,000-tonne,
2,040-passenger Carnival Cruise Line vessel and
the world’s first cruise ship to have a completely
smoke-free environment.
This super-liner, one of a series by Carnival
known for lavish entertainment, spacious cabins,
super-size fitness centre and nightlife galore, sails
from Miami into the Caribbean on seven-day itin-
eraries, year-round.
Go to www.carnival.com for port-of-call de-
tails and more. Enthusiasts of this century’s great
ocean liner era will notice the plush interiors of
Paradise are a tribute to the celebrated Nor-
mandie, the Queen Mary, and the SS United
States.

questions:
Exclusive bed and break-
fasts in London
Q:Do you have information
on bed and breakfast private
home accommodations in Lon-
don, preferably in the Knights-
bridge area?
A:Bed and breakfast ac-
commodation is available for
visitors in some of London’s
loveliest residential properties.
Most of the host homes on the
roster of Uptown Reservations
offer spacious living quarters,
private facilities, and most are
located in the smart and safe
sectors of London like
Knightsbridge and Chelsea.
Some homes are just around
the corner from Harrods, oth-
ers are tucked away in quiet
streets and squares, or in the
theatre district and close to
everything social. Your hosts,
and fellow guests (who at these
bed and breakfasts are often
business and/or single trav-
ellers) are likely to give you in-
sider tips for exploring the city
that you wouldn’t get else-
where.
Uptown Reservations has a
Web site for initial planning at
www.uptownres.co.uk, or e-
mail your questions to: in-
quiries@uptownres.co.uk.
Foreign affairs international
hotline
Q:I heard there was a warn-
ing regarding travel to Costa
Rica. Is this true and what
should we know?
A:The Department of For-
eign Affairs and International
Trade, reporting increasing
levels of crime in Costa Rica,
recently issued an advisory for
individuals planning visits to
the country. It read as follows:
“Ensure all travel is undertaken
during daylight hours, avoid
making stops en route to your
final destination, stay in well-
frequented and protected ho-
tels or campgrounds, and avoid
camping overnight on beach-
es.”
If you have questions re-
garding safety, security condi-
tions and health issues while
abroad, call the Foreign Affairs
and International Trade hotline
at 1-800-267-6788, or visit a
Web site at www.voyage.gc.ca.

Purple loosestrife isn’t a na-
tive species to North America,
but the plant has been spread-
ing rapidly, clogging wetlands,
marshes, river banks and low-
lying farm fields.
And, as it moves in, fewer
native plants and animals sur-
vive.
Without natural enemies,
purple loosestrife can displace
hundreds of fish and wildlife
species from their native habi-
tat.
The Ontario Federation of
Anglers and Hunters (OFAH)
is again organizing Project
Purple Week from Aug. 1 to 7.
During the week, community
groups and individuals can
help take back areas with pur-
ple loosestrife by uprooting the
plants or cutting off the flower
tops before they can spread
their seeds. Each plant can pro-
duce up to three million seeds.
Biological controls have
proven to be effective against
large stands of the plant, but
manual efforts, such as digging
and clipping, are still impor-
tant methods of curbing the
spread.
One biological method was
the release a small leaf-eating
beetle that feeds almost exclu-
sively on purple loosestrife.
For more information on
Project Purple Week activities,
call the OFAH invading
species hotline at 1-800-563-
7711.

PICKERING —The Frenchman’s
Bay Watershed Rehabilitation Project
(FBWRP) is looking for local residents
to keep their eyes peeled for osprey in
Pickering.
The organization is hosting a volun-
teer environmental watch (VEW) work-
shop from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday,Aug.
2 to introduce its new osprey watch pro-
gram. The meeting is also an opportuni-
ty for volunteers to learn more about on-
going water testing and butterfly moni-
toring programs.
“If you missed the invitation or were
unable to attend the last VEW work-
shop, the FBWRP invites you to attend
the second VEW workshop,” states a
news release. “This workshop will reac-
quaint you with our water watch and
butterfly watch and introduce you to the
new osprey watch program.”
Volunteers will help the FBWRP col-
lect information to determine the current
health of the watershed. The results of
the monitoring programs will be used to
determine future restoration efforts.
The meeting takes place at the bot-
tom of Wharf Street, just east off Liver-
pool Road South. The event takes place
rain or shine, so participants are remind-
ed to dress appropriately and to wear
shoes that can get wet and dirty.
