The Ministry of the Environment on July 10 an- nounced the tight regulations would also govern nursing and retirement homes, and social and health-care facili- ties that have their own water supply systems. John Steele, a ministry spokesman, said the Province is targeting these facilities for two reasons: because they have their own water supply systems and therefore don’t fall under the existing drinking water protection regula- tion announced last fall, and these facilities service young and old populations. “Seniors and very young children are very much the ones affected by bad water,” explained Mr. Steele, citing the fact E. coli deaths in Walkerton occurred in those age groups. Gary Gibson, occupational health and safety officer for the Durham District School Board, said, “the majori- ty of the elements in the regulation we’ve already had in place and covered by our well-water management plan.” That plan, introduced last September, calls for month- ly coliform tests of treated water at the board’s eight rural schools serviced by well water in Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog townships and in north Pickering. The board also owns four outdoor education facilities — visited by stu- dents throughout the year — that draw well water. “We’ll have to change our (coliform testing) frequen- cy to every two weeks,” said Mr. Gibson. And, while the board created a formal training pack- age for staff operating the chlorinators at its facilities, he said they would have to be retrained if the regulation passes, as is expected. “Now the ministry has basically defined what training is and there’s a ministry-sponsored, accredited course,” said Mr. Gibson. Mr. Gibson did not know how much it would cost the board to make the changes and to test more frequently. Tony Wong, Durham Region’s man- ager of environmental health, said child- care facilities in north Pickering, would be affected by the regulation. Water at those facilities is tested when the health inspector visits, an aver- age of four times a year. Mr. Wong said there are no nursery homes or homes for specialized care on well water in Durham. Mr. Steele said the proposed regula- tion would be posted to the ministry’s environmental bill of rights (EBR) reg- istry for public comment for a period of 30 days. He noted there is, how- ever, a suggestion that this re- quirement could be reduced in scope if the owner of the water supply achieves a series of good samples. Up until now, many facili- ties with private water sup- plies that serve the public have had their water tests done by municipal health units when they conducted regular inspections, Mr. Steele said. He said the new regulations could mean these facilities will have to pay an accredited lab to do the extra tests rather than relying on municipal inspectors. After two weeks in Whitby Jail, the 40-year-old woman and her 49-year-old husband, who cannot be named, were ordered released yesterday by Justice of the Peace Jack Wiley, who approved three proposed sureties. Both are charged with two counts each of forcible confinement, failure to provide the necessaries of life, assault, assault with a weapon and aggravated assault. The mother is also charged with administering a noxious substance. With their heads covered by jackets, they walked out the back of the King Street East courthouse and were over- whelmed by reporters and cameramen. Police alleged the pair locked the boys, ages 14 and 15, in separate en- closed baby cribs “for hours on end on a daily basis for years.” Removed from their home on June 29 by the Durham Children’s Aid Soci- ety, investigators say the teenagers were forced to wear diapers, physically as- saulted and deprived of adequate food. The couple was arrested July 5 and granted bail, but were only yesterday re- leased after three family friends agreed to guarantee $10,000 for each of the ac- cused and promised to make sure the ac- cused abide by court-imposed terms. They must reside with two of their sureties in Lakefield and are not permit- ted to leave the home unless in the com- pany of their sureties. They must not communicate in any way with their sons or witnesses, remain away from Cartwright Central Public School in Blackstock, not return to their residence. Nor can they be in the company of any person under 16 years unless an adult over 21 years is present as part of the conditions of their bail. The couple’s release on bail shows the “the bail system works,” said de- fence lawyer Alex Sosna, who asked the case be adjourned to Aug. 14. In a new twist in the investigation, Durham Regional Police Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit detectives yester- day arrested a 28-year-old Port Perry man who they described only as “a member of the extended family.” Police allege the man, whose name was withheld, participated at times in the disciplining of the children, al- though he has co-operated with detec- tives. He surrendered to police headquar- ters in the afternoon and was charged with two counts each of assault with a weapon and forcible confinement. He was released on an officer’s un- dertaking with conditions that include he not associate with either of the par- ents or the children involved in the case. The man is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 23. NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, July 20, 2001 PAGE 3 A/P Third person charged in child-abuse case PICKERING VOLKSWAGEN INC. The City of Oshawa Marine Rescue Association (COMRA) responded to a call for help about 9:45 p.m. after the vessel’s operator contacted the Coast Guard in Trenton by radio, said Jason Pow, the association’s media relations officer. He reported there wasn’t a marine radio or any flares on the boat, which had suffered mechanical difficulties and was located by COMRA less than one nautical mile west of the Pickering Nu- clear Generating Station. “The boat was closer to shore than what he had stated he was,” Mr. Pow said, noting he did not have any information about where the boaters were from, where they were travelling to or how long they’d been out on the water. Mr. Pow said there were no in- juries and the boat was safely towed to the East Shore Marina in Frenchman’s Bay. He noted boaters are “encour- aged to abide” by the rules and regulations set out by the Canadian Coast Guard and should carry proper marine equipment on board their vessel. Mr. Pow said the conditions on the lake Wednesday night were fairly calm with swells of about one metre. He added the last call COMRA responded to was on Canada Day when a couple of pad- dleboats were blown out about a mile-and-a-half into the lake. Wearing an orange jail-issued jumpsuit, a handcuffed James Stew- art Poland, 38, had his case ad- journed by defence lawyer Lorne Sabsay to Sept. 5, for a judicial pre- trial. Mr. Poland was arrested June 7 after Durham Regional Police, act- ing on a phone tip, discovered the body of Andrea Schneider in the trunk of her car parked at the Durham Centre shopping plaza at Harwood Avenue and Kingston Road in Ajax. An autopsy found the 38-year-old mother of three, execu- tive secretary to the board of direc- tors at the Royal Ontario Museum, died from blunt force head injuries inflicted in the garage at the cou- ple’s Perfitt Crescent home. The couple’s terminally ill seven-year-old daughter was taken to The Hospital for Sick Children to be cared for and their two sons, ages five and 11, are with relatives. Thank you for telling the Barclay fam- ily story and their plight regarding living conditions in their historic cottage on a property that has been resided in and loved by many members of one of Picker- ing’s first families. As the chairman of the advisory com- mittee for Pickering Museum Village, I would strongly recommend our commu- nity support the Barclays in preserving this genuine part of the history of the township of Pickering. Our museum vil- lage houses a few of Pickering’s treasures, but we can’t accommodate or support all of them and it is my strong desire that homes of this vintage be preserved and we can continue to celebrate the lives of significant characters who contributed to our cultural diversity in the first 200 years of Pickering’s history. I am also a direct descendant of the Reverend George Barclay and know the contributions of both Rev. George and his son Captain George Barclay to education and politics in our community. I hope by letting your readers know about them, our Barclay family legacy will be maintained and continued. Editorial &OPINIONS PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER JULY 20, 2001 His name was Alexis Helmer, a 22-year-old Ottawa boy full of all the promise and ambition human na- ture instils in every young man. When he left Canada for the killing fields of Flanders, little did he know his presence there would influ- ence the way an entire world would forever remember ‘The Great War’. Sadly, the name Alexis Helmer is probably not recognizable to most Canadians, but his place in our histo- ry, along with many others, must be remembered. His death at the battle of Ypres on May 2, 1915, devastated his close friend, a young doctor by the name of John McCrae. It was on May 3, 1915, that Alexis Helmer be- came the painful inspiration for the most thought-provoking war poem ever written, ‘In Flanders Fields’. My love for Canadian history began at a young age when my father would regale the family with unusu- al anecdotes about the city of Toron- to. The family would roll their eyes in a collective defiant act, thinking this might make the pain of another one of dad’s stories pass quickly. I never told anyone, but I found dad’s stories always left me wanting more. For some reason, the thought of the legendary Conn Smythe building Maple Leaf Gardens during the de- pression and paying his construction workers in stock was interesting. The stories of Canada are endless. The lives of John McCrae and Alex- is Helmer are but one. Perusing the pages of history, I am often left with a sense of unworthiness in holding citizenship in this land when I read and discover the actions and exploits of my brothers and sisters that came before me. We, as a nation, have been historically lazy and adrift for too long and are long overdue in re- claiming our past for future genera- tions to discover. Historical revision- ists have been failing in their at- tempts to discourage the teachings of the past in favour of a sanitized vi- sion of the future. I am curious as to how future gen- erations will look upon us. Are we to be remembered as an era of politi- cally correct generic citizens living for today and standing for nothing? We must instil in our children some of the seeds of our past if we are to evolve and improve as a peo- ple. I’m happy to say there appears to be a national collective effort under way promoting our history thanks in part to organizations like the Dominion Institute. In the meantime, the view of our past from my ivory tower is spectac- ular. Feel free to join me, and, of course, bring the kids. Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Seeds of our past plant firm foundation for our future Give our Canadian history more of a read, you may find yourself feeling unworthy of this great land Durham Region tourism is really clicking. The latest venture by the Region of Durham has expanded our borders with a tourism link on its Web site. Figures show more and more people are seeking information about what Durham has to offer. Tourism is a huge business for thousands of employees in Durham each year. Consider for example that in 1998, the most recent year for which figures are available, tourists made 2.2 million person visits to the region, spending a whopping $92 million. No doubt those numbers are on the increase if an unofficial figure like Web site visits is anything to go by. Not surprisingly, the Great Blue Heron Charity Casino in Scugog is No. 1 for visitors to Durham. Many people owe their jobs to the tourism business and the casino brings in revenue in buckets to Durham. It should be noted a percentage of that cash raked in at the tables and at the slots goes back into the com- munity. World-renowned Cullen Gardens in Whitby rates as the No. 2 Durham attraction with many thousands of visitors checking out the beautiful landscapes and other goodies to be found there. Other must-see places in Durham include the Bowmanville Zoo, the oldest of its kind in Canada, Jungle Cat World in Orono, Parkwood Estate in Oshawa and the Ocala and Archibald wineries in Scugog and Clarington, respectively. Durham’s more rural municipalities, Uxbridge, Brock, Scu- gog and Clarington are ripe for the tourist trade according to Durham tourism manager Patti Watson, who believes the region has held its own or is slightly up in tourists this year. “I feel... the countryside, the Uxbridge, Port Perry, Orono, Bowmanville, Oak Ridges Moraine areas are more popular. That’s where the wineries are, where the bed and breakfasts are, all three of the municipalities in the north. I think they have all the right components to make an excellent tourism destination,” said Ms. Watson. Building interest in and promoting those more rural destina- tions while maintaining and increasing the flow of tourists and their dollars to current attractions is the challenge for the future. In Ajax and Pickering, the ever-expanding waterfront areas draw thousands of visitors, and if the much-anticipated water- front park, planned for Whitby, ever does come to fruition it will certainly help draw more tourists to Durham. Let’s hope more projects come along to bring travellers our way, while also building on the great attractions we already have. Durham tourism manager Patti Watson said at this time last year the office had re- ceived about 50 electronic inquiries. This year the number has ballooned to 500, and while many of them come from Ontario and even Durham residents, the World Wide Web has made Durham just a click away for other tourists. “It’s really amazing where we’re getting e-mail inquiries from,” she said in an inter- view. “We’ve had (inquires from people in) England, China, Taiwan, Columbia, Aus- tralia — right around the world.” One inquiry came from a travel agent in South America who has clients coming to the area and wanted as many tourism brochures as possible. Ms. Watson said a traveller who has done some Web research is ahead of the game, already possessing some knowledge of the area they plan to visit. “The World Wide Web has opened up for people who are travelling internationally, to research where they’re going and ask spe- cific questions,” she said. Summer is just picking up speed, but Ms. Watson said she has spoken with con- tacts in other jurisdictions outside Durham and is hearing tourism numbers are down so far. But, speaking with local hotel owners and others, she’s happy to report “things are definitely holding their own and even up a little”. Ms. Watson said in her job it’s difficult to get hard data. Private businesses don’t re- lease attendance numbers to her, only indi- cating the number of visitors is up or down compared to last year. She said a survey found tourists made 2.2 million person visits to Durham in 1998, spending $92 million. So what’s the top attraction for tourists visiting Durham? “As far as attendance and the number of people who are employed, the (Great Blue Heron) Casino is number 1,” said Ms. Wat- son. “As far as one, big-name attraction, it would be Cullen Gardens (and Miniature Village). And Cullen Gardens is probably rated one of the top 10 attractions in Toron- to.” Michelle Ratte, special events supervisor at Cullen Gardens, said a broad range of people come to visit the Whitby attraction. “Sometimes you can go out there and all the licence plates are from Ontario,” she said. “Other times it’s a real mixed bag.” Many visitors come more than once a year, taking advantage of the annual pass. Perhaps 15 to 20 per cent arrive on tour buses, said Ms. Ratte, with Cullen Gardens either as the only destination on the trip or as part of a broader itinerary. Her sense is tourist numbers at Cullen Gardens are pretty much on par with recent years. Apart from the big two, Ms. Watson said the Bowmanville Zoo, the oldest in Canada; Jungle Cat World in Orono; Parkwood Es- tate in Oshawa, and the Ocala and Archibald wineries in Scugog and Claring- ton, respectively, are also top local destina- tions. The typical Durham tourist comes from the Greater Toronto Area, said Ms. Watson. A Toronto resident, after hearing so much about the Oak Ridges Moraine, may want to see it for herself by going on a hike with a friend, leaving the busy city behind for the rolling hills and forests. “Within 20 minutes or half an hour, you can be in the countryside,” she said. As for places growing in popularity, she be- lieves Durham’s rural areas are on the up- swing. “I feel... the countryside, the Uxbridge, Port Perry, Orono, Bowmanville, Oak Ridges Moraine (areas are) more popular,” said Ms. Watson. “That’s where the winer- ies are, where the bed and breakfasts are. Uxbridge, all three of the communities, I think they have all the right components to make an excellent tourism destination.” She said some destinations are right next door to many residents, but remain un- tapped resources. The Second Marsh area in Oshawa is the largest protected wetlands in the Greater Toronto Area, she pointed out. “Most people don’t think about going down there and taking a hike,” she said. “It doesn’t cost anything and you learn a lot.” To get a sense of what Durham has to offer, visit the region’s Web site, www.re- gion.durham.on.ca, and click on ‘tourism’. JASON LIEBREGTS/ News Advertiser photo DURHAM — With so many incredible locations to chose from, interest in Durham Region tourist spots is on the rise this year. Jennifer Albertson, left, and Joanne Mason spent a day with Ms. Mason’s daughter Samantha recently, enjoying all that Petticoat Creek Conservation Area has to offer. Despite tough loss, Ajax teen feels ‘we had the best bid’ Experience leaves Massimo De Simone with invaluable experiences, new friends – and wanting more ond to Beijing in a vote of the Internation- al Olympic Committee (IOC) in Moscow last Friday. “Definitely. Now that I’ve seen all the hard work that goes into it, if another bid is forthcoming, I’ll definitely be one to sign up,” said the well-spoken 15-year-old. “Now that we know how the bidding process works, there is so much we can learn from it.” Massimo was in Moscow last week as part of the ‘shadow cabinet’ — a group of former athletes and youth asked by the bid committee to act as advisers on such is- sues as designing the athletes’ village. He was one of two youth members of the cab- inet to make the trip to the Russian capital last Thursday for Friday’s announcement of the host city, flying on the same plane that carried Prime Minister Jean Chretien to the critical IOC vote. Although the result of the vote was dis- couraging, Massimo was nonetheless con- fident that the best bid of the five compet- ing cities belonged to Toronto. “Of course, everyone was disappointed. I’ve put two years of volunteer service into this and some people have put as much as four years of work into the bid. We knew we had the best bid — people came out and said that it was — but when (then-IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch) said it was Beijing, we were all a little down,” he said. Massimo said it was exciting to be a Canadian in Moscow for the vote. Al- though he didn’t take part of the Toronto bid committee’s final presentation to the IOC delegates due to a mix-up with ac- creditation, he said everyone played a role in the final, last-minute push. “Not everyone had an important role, but everyone had something to do,” ex- plained Massimo, who’ll be attending Grade 10 at St. Michael’s College in Toronto this fall. The ‘shadow cabinet’ was formed two years ago, with 21 youth from across the GTA being part of the advisory group to the Toronto 2008 bid committee. The Durham Catholic District School Board nominated Massimo for the honour as, at that time, he was a Grade 9 student at Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School in Ajax. Massimo noted his role with the ‘shad- ow cabinet’ was to give a youth perspec- tive to the bid committee, especially where it concerned the ‘World Youth Centre’ a lasting legacy to youth that was part of the bid. Beyond the actual bid process, Massi- mo took away one other important experi- ence as well. “I met 20 friends who I’ll have for life,” he said. A.J. Friendship pays off AJAX —From Mary to Mary. That’s what Mary O’Rourke of Ajax plans to do with some of the second prize she won in the July 14 Lotto 6/49 draw. Ms. O’Rourke won $85,770.70 and plans to share it with Mary Savoini. “I’m so happy to have won such a prize, I will be sharing it with my best friend, Mary Savoini. The two of us have been playing bingo and lotteries for many years and always agreed to share any win- nings. That’s what friends are for,” Ms. O’Rourke said when claiming her prize. Ms. O’Rourke is a registered nurse at Riverdale Hospital in Toronto. The 54- year-old has two daughters. In addition to sharing with her friend, Ms. O’Rourke plans to share with family. The winning ticket was bought in North York. The Durham Family Court Clinic hosts the Oct. 20 rally, with ‘scary things’ as the theme, as a fund-raiser to support the work of its communi- ty support team. Limited to 25 vehicles, rally par- ticipants will start from Whitby and travel to various Durham locales on a scavenger hunt that includes a lot of brain-teasing questions. Participants can win prizes in var- ious categories, including theme-re- lated costume design. The reception and awarding of prizes will take place at Cullen Gardens and Minia- ture Village, the home of ‘Halloween spooky nights’. Sylvia Pivko, the clinic’s execu- tive director, in a press release asked for individuals and businesses to support the clinic, since it “can only benefit the entire community when troubled youth get the support that they need to turn their lives around”. The goal is to raise $13,000 dur- ing the organization’s third car rally. Adult registration is $25 and rally participants are asked to collect pledges. The registration deadline is Oct. 10. The DFCC is a local, non-profit community service agency that for more than two decades has served the needs of children, youth and fam- ilies before the courts in Durham. The community support team assists troubled youth trying to refocus their lives and rebuild relationships with their families and their community. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, which on May 13 froze development on the Oak Ridges Moraine for a period of six months, said interested citizens could provide input — via mail or on the moraine portion of its Web site (www.mah.gov.on.ca) — on how to protect the moraine. An advisory committee of stake- holders that was recently set up to de- velop a long-term strategy to protect the moraine will also hold a series of public consultations and stakeholder meetings throughout the summer. No details of the meetings are yet avail- able but a ministry official said the public would receive plenty of notice. “We will give enough notice so people can make appropriate arrange- ments (to be at the meetings),” said Alexandra Gillespie, a spokesman in Minister Chris Hodgson’s office. The Province said its advisory com- mittee would take into account letters and submissions it has already re- ceived regarding the moraine, as well as a preliminary strategy to protect the moraine developed by the regions of Durham, York and Peel. It will also take into account the input provided at public sessions held by the three re- gions. Ms. Gillespie said the ministry moraine portion of its Web site would be up and running within a couple of days. Those wishing to mail comments should send them to Audrey Bennet of the ministry’s provincial planning and environmental services sub-commit- tee. I am writing to you today about something that is very important to my family and me and I am hoping that you will agree to help. My mother, Susan, was diagnosed with ALS in September 1999. ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a fatal illness that attacks the motor neurons that take messages from the brain to the muscles. When these motor neurons fail, you quickly lose the ability to move, walk, and even talk. This makes even the simplest tasks nearly impossible. As of yet, there is still no known cause, cure of even a treatment for this disease. Most people live two to five years after diagnosis, but my Mom passed away only 13 months later. Mom’s f irst symptoms were slurring of her speech and difficulty swallowing liquids and food. As time progressed, simple chores such as lifting a glass became more and more difficult. Within a few months, she had to have a feeding tube placed in her stomach because she could not eat anything at all. Shortly thereafter, she lost her ability to speak and also became bed-ridden. She passed away on November the 5th, 2000. Watching her go through this was the most difficult thing my family and I have had to endure. This disease took our mother from us and our lives will never be quite the same again. My Mom will not be at my graduation, nor will she be able to dance with me at my wedding, or hold her future grandchildren. With your help, perhaps we can prevent this from happening to someone else. On Saturday, September the 29th at 9:00 am at Rotary Park in Ajax, a 5 kilometer Walk to D’Feet ALS will be held. We invite you to come and participate in our Walk and supporting the cause by making a contribution. We will have families and businesses forming teams. My family is actually leading two teams, one captained by my Dad, and the other captained by me. After completion of the Walk, a barbeque will be held for all participants and sponsors who were involved with this worthy cause. One of the things that make these Walks especially fun is that it gives the family and friends a chance to honour and support someone that they know with ALS, or to reflect on memories that we have had with loved ones who have passed away. It will also enable us to increase public awareness, support local programs and make a contribution to research to find a cure. I hope that you will join us in this effort and look forward to seeing you with your family and friends at our Walk Yours truly, Jordan White P.S. Durham Regional Police and cor- rectional officers arrested Scot Gre- gory Freeman during a recent project targeting probation violators. The 27-year-old, who was denied bail last month, appeared in court Monday on charges of failing to com- ply with probation by breaking his curfew, assault police with intent to Man charged in vicious street beating PICKERING — A 23-year-old man is recovering from serious facial injuries after he was the victim of a vicious as- sault on the weekend. Durham Regional Police said the vic- tim was already bleeding from an injury when he got into a cab with another man just before 3 a.m. Saturday. The taxi stopped on Front Road at which time the victim was dragged from the car, punched to the ground and kicked several times in the head. Police were alerted and the man was taken to the Ajax and Pickering Health Centre. He suffered a broken cheekbone, jaw and nose. Police said a suspect was arrested at about 5 a.m. Sunday after officers, in an unrelated incident, were called to Marshcourt Drive for a man attempting to force his way into his ex-girlfriend’s residence. Jason Alore Spencer, of no fixed ad- dress, is charged with aggravated as- sault, assault causing bodily harm and obstruct police. resist arrest and two counts of threatening death. “It’s alleged the officers were threatened while making the ar- rest,” police spokesman Dave Selby said. Mr. Freeman was scheduled to be back in Oshawa court Thursday. The Emperor Street resident was convicted in 1998 of manslaughter in the death of Paul Lebar, 25, also of Ajax, who died Dec. 14, 1996 after being punched in the head outside the Second Storey Bar and Grill on Harwood Avenue South. Mr. Lebar suffered multiple blows to the head and died as a result of a ruptured vertebral artery, court was told in 1998. Mr. Justice Donald Halikows- ki sentenced Mr. Freeman to 15 months in custody and three- years probation. In 1999 he was convicted of breaching probation and given 90 days in jail and three-years pro- bation. Mattress STARTING from $4900 6 Pc. Durham MP Alex Shep- herd said a new regulation by the Ontario Ministry of Health forcing audiologists to work under direct supervi- sion of an ear, nose and throat specialist will cut off access to residents in parts of Durham where specialists are scarce. “There are huge lineups to see ear, nose and throat specialists,” said the Durham riding representative, who has been using the services of an audiologist for the past 25 years. “To get into see one can mean a two- to three- month wait. What this is say- ing is an audiologist has to be an employee of a doctor. This is going to be more costly (to taxpayers) and it restricts the actual service. This at a time when the demographic is aging and more and more people are having hearing problems.” Ministry spokesman David Jensen said the new policy is “formalizing” the expectation by the ministry that audiologists perform under the direction of a physician. Currently audiolo- gists must bill through a physician, he pointed out. “It gets back to the fact it is the doctor that bills,” he said. But Durham audiologist Jack Vlad disagreed. He said there is a tremendous differ- ence between billing through a doctor and working on the premises of one. Like Mr. Shepherd, he said this could have serious implications for patient access to hearing tests. “I bill through a physician in Peterborough and an ear, nose and throat (ENT) spe- cialist in Ajax,” he said, not- ing in some areas of the province there are audiolo- gists but there are no ENTs. For patients in areas without specialists, the only option will be to pay for the tests, which can run from $40 to more than $100 depending on the type of tests required, he said. “While $40 may not sound like much, to some people it is the difference be- tween buying groceries or not.” He also suggested the new system will cost taxpay- ers more because specialists will refer the patient to the audiologist which will mean an additional $50 consulting fee paid through OHIP. As well, Mr. Vlad sug- gested the proposal isn’t practical. “If it means the doctor has to be in the office supervising it will be impossible to com- ply,” he said, noting ENTs perform many of their duties outside the office. The new regulation was announced June 22 and was originally scheduled to take effect July 1, but the date was extended to Aug. 13. Mr. Jensen said the new policy is the result of findings from a physician services commit- tee, which reports to the min- istry. “This is totally inconsis- tent with the Province’s own policy,” said Mr. Shepherd. “This was all done behind closed doors, over night. This is just the tip of the ice- berg. More things will be af- fected and more health care will have to go through the doctor’s office,” he said, questioning if eye exams will be next. “It makes no sense. I am just outraged the (Premier Mike) Harris government has done this.” The College of Audiolo- gists and Speech Language Pathologists announced Wednesday it intends to begin legal proceedings to have the decision reversed. All STAR Shopping Here are some of this season’s most frequently asked questions: Insurance for your trip: Q:The purchase of health insur- ance while away is pretty well essen- tial, but what about trip cancellation insurance? A:Trip cancellation insurance re- imburses you for the prepaid, non-re- fundable portion of your costs if you’re forced to cancel or interrupt your trip for reasons such as illness, injury or death. While many insurance policies offer a wide-range of additional ben- efits, still, explicit conditions for can- cellation apply. Policies vary, for example, on the subject of medical problems that ex- isted before the trip. And many won’t insure you if you are planning to parasail, scuba dive, or pursue other adventurous activities. Still, cancellation insurance is highly worthwhile if you’re paying a large amount of money well ahead of time. If you do have to cancel, be sure to notify your travel agent immediately. Your reimbursement will be based on when the cause occurred. Also, insurance is generally limit- ed to the difference between what you paid to the travel operator and what you are entitled to recover from them. Insurance companies step in only after the travel operator has deter- mined its ceiling on the refund. Q:What are the rules regarding compensation of lost baggage when flying? Is there any difference if it gets lost on a Canadian route, a U.S. route, or during international travel? A:Yes, there is a difference. Cur- rently the airlines in Canada pay $750 for bags lost on cross-country domestic routes. If you lose your lug- gage in the United States on-board any U.S. airline, the minimum listed amount to be paid is $2,500 U.S. This minimum was recently raised from $1,250 as a direct result of con- sumers driving government legisla- tion. If you travel overseas, the rule of compensation at present is $20 U.S. per kilogram. The baggage weight re- striction on most international flights is 70 kilograms. By the way, North American in- dustry statistics indicate 99.5 per cent of all checked bags arrive as sched- uled, with 80 per cent of the rest ar- riving within five days. — News Canada A/P PAGE 18 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, July 20, 2001 Travel &TOURISM NEWS ADVERTISER JULY 20, 2001 Insure you don’t take unwanted baggage Travel insurance and standard rules for lost baggage help make trips smooth sailing With travel insurance and lost baggage rules, all these Caribbean cruisers have to worry about is a perfect tan. The name came later to reflect on the things to come. Country Craft & Chat, located at 109 Old Kingston Rd. Unit #2 in Ajax Pickering Village, has been carefully put together to become a store where you feel right at home. When you enter you will find a cozy fireplace with two wingback chairs. These have been placed so you can sit and relax while making a deci- sion where you want this or that. you can come and browse, or maybe the ambiance of the store will encourage you to buy one of those unique items. Maybe you might be looking to make some decorative changes in your home and need some ideas, well we have a variety of magazines for you to browse through and hope you find some- thing that tickles your fancy. I have tried to put together a cozy environment that makes you feel good all over, as my mother-in- law says”if it’s not cozy, it’s not Shirley”. Along with our new and old country decor we have a variety of gift baskets to choose from. When you see them you will see that they are a basket that have everyday useful items in them. We won't let you throw anything away. If you need a basket for a spe- cial occasion and I do not have it in the store, with some notice I’m sure I can come up with something special. This is just the start of Country Craft & Chat so you don’t want to forget the name. I will continue to look for unique prod- ucts or ideas. I want to have items that you don’t see at other stores, I want to be different. I also have my own motto “When I save you save”. I am looking forward to a new challenge and meeting new people and, hope I can make the Ajax commu- nity proud. Special thanks to my husband Jim for making this all possible. PICOV FURNITURE C.C. Each Saturday and Sunday, until the end of Au- gust, visitors to Archibald Orchards and Winery, just north of Bowmanville, will discover a co-op studio of artists and artisans at work creating and selling unique gift, home and garden items. “All of us are a mix of mediums which is kind of neat,” said chalk pastel artist Christena North. “It’s like an artists’ market and there is always someone working on something so people can get a chance to get a look at what we’re doing.” Currently, there are eight artists who display their work at the studio located in an open-air build- ing at the orchard, said Sandy Archibald. The win- ery and gift store is open and once their thirst for art has been filled, visitors can come in and sample fruit wines. On Sunday afternoons, the orchard of- fers wine and food tasting featuring free samples of pastas, desserts and other foods to accompany the fruit wines. “It’s so peaceful there,” said Ms. North, a Whit- by resident. “My life is hectic but there it is very serene and you feel like you can breathe again.” The co-op studio has been an ideal place for artists to share ideas and learn from each other, she said. “None of us really knew each other. It was wonderful how we’ve bonded.” The artists are from various parts of Durham Region and anyone interested in displaying their work can contact Ms. North for information on set- ting up a display. The space has been donated free of charge by Archibald’s Orchard. Artists interested in more information can call 905-666-3040. Archibald’s is located at 6275 Lib- erty St. N. L1V 1B5 (905) 831-2665 The CHOCOLATE ROCK is one of our family of ROYAL TREATS. If anything Dairy Queen has the market cornered on really neat and catchy names. The Chocolate Rock begs the question ... What is it? Before I tell you what it is, especially for those who have never tried it before, I want to tell you the philosophy behind this particular Royal Treat. This ROYAL TREAT was rolled out last year in part to introduce our newest gourmet ingredient ... a special blend of DQ ROASTED ALMONDS. The roasted almonds give an incredibly new and unique taste to this truly sumptuous dessert. The key again is the combination of the different ingredients and the resulting flavour experience. First we pump HOT FUDGE into the bottom of the fluted dessert dish. Now we sprinkle in a portion of our new ROASTED ALMONDS. This guarantees a sweet finish to this dessert. Now we spiral in the reason people come to this store. A heaping mound of DQ SOFT SERVE finishing in a big circular mound topped with our trademark DQ curl. Now the special combinations begin. We send another generous pump of HOT FUDGE cascading down the sides of the soft serve pooling around the middle of the dish. We sprinkle the ROASTED ALMONDS lightly over the top of that pool of HOT FUDGE. Then a second sprinkle all over the top of that cold creamy soft serve. Now the final and impressive touch. We drizzle our WARM CHOCOLATE COATING down over the top of the soft serve completely covering those roasted almonds. The coating quickly hardens (like a dipped cone) thus you have the CHOCOLATE ROCK. As you plunge your spoon down through the CHOCOLATE COATING, icy cold soft serve and ROASTED ALMONDS you immediately hit the pool of HOT FUDGE and roasted almonds. It is the union of the sweet, sweet chocolate coating and the rich, rich not fudge with the cold, creamy soft serve and roasted almonds that produces such a unique taste sensation followed almost immediately by a wild urge for a second mouthful. If you haven’t tried one may I suggest you give it a try. Bring this ad and I’ll top it with whipped cream free of charge. A CHOCOLATE ROCK topped with whipped cream. Doesn’t that sound good? Pony club ready for a show Expos end Sox title hopes Pickering minor peewees come up just short in Brass Bat tourney final PICKERING —The Pickering Red Sox minor peewees fell just short of the brass ring at the recent 2001 Windsor Brass Bat Tournament. The Sox advanced all the way to the championship game against tournament hosts, the Windsor Expos. Pickering held a 6-4 lead until the top of the seventh inning before the wheels came off. Some untimely errors haunted the Sox as Windsor scored five runs to score a 9-6 victory. Travis Hendry, Mark Hoyne and Stan Pon each contributed two hits, while Chris Rose, Kyle Kotchie and Robert Carmen added sin- gle hits. The Red Sox got off to a great start by winning their first game against the River- side Royals (east Windsor), 7-2. Hendry and Pon were solid on the mound, holding Riverside to eight hits. On offence, Ryan Turner led the way with three hits, including a double, while Pon rapped out a pair of hits, including a triple. Pon would later steal home base. Hoyne had a pair of singles. Defensively, Pon and Carmen combined for a double play. In the second game, the Sox scored a 6-1 win over the Cambridge Cubs. Michael McFarlane and Hoyne combined in the win on the mound. Offensively, Turn- er and Pon had three hits apiece. Hoyne chipped in with a triple and double and Chris Rose hit two singles. Hendry, Kotchie, Kevin Haggarty, Matthew Redding and Ross Norman added key singles. The Sox ripped Etobicoke Kingsway 12- 2 in Game 3. Kotchie and Carmen supplied strong pitching efforts. In the first inning, Redding and Rose produced a spectacular double play to kill a potential Etobicoke uprising. Hoyne led the team with a home run, two singles and a base on balls. McFarlane, Nor- man and Pon all contributed three hits. Rose and Hendry supplied two hits apiece, includ- ing a triple by Hendry. Carmen and Kotchie each had one hit to round out the Pickering attack. In a total team effort, Pickering downed the London Tec Eager Beavers 23-7 in a game that was called in the fifth inning when the mercy (10-run lead) rule was invoked. The Sox led London 23-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Eager Beavers stormed back for seven runs. Team member Daniel Pineau was absent for the tourney. The team’s manager is Mike Carmen. The coaches are Richard Hoyne, Jeff Redding and Dave Hindley. The general manager is Bernie Rose. Players Wanted for Volleyball Tournament Sat. DANCE PATIO BAR CHATTS opened for business in February of 1999 by Chris & Tom, the owners of Papps Casual Dining in Pickering and two friends Heather and Tommy. Later the restaurant was taken over by Billy, Nelson and Tommy who are the current owners. The fresh roadhouse setting and large menu are a draw for local patrons. Guests can choose from big roaster wings to steaks , fajitas, nachos and the best steak on a kaiser in town. Chris’s dad owned Big M Drive In, in Bay Ridges, and his recipe is legendary. Stay for the evening on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays and enjoy bands or the DJ and dance the night away. If you’ve never experienced the entertaining band “Two for The Show” come out on Thurdays nights and have some laughs. The restaurant features a four sided fireplace, pool table, games, large screen TV for viewing special events and a large patio for 110 people complete with a bar and Bar B.Q. Why not book the patio for your next private party or golf tournament? The owners at Chatts feel strongly about giving back to the community. This is evident by the sponsorship of local sports teams including baseball, hockey, volleyball and darts. The annual dinner for 100 people where proceeds are donated to Variety Village is a favourite event. If you’re a golfer, Chatts hosts 4 tournaments annually. Ask about the next available date for sign ups. The homemade style of cooking brings back customers time and again. Even the French fries are cut one potato at a time! Chatts has adopted many of the Big M traditions that customers have come to love, in many of their food recipes. Bill, Nelson and Tom invite new customers to come on in and experience dining and entertaining pleasure at its best. They would also like to extend a special thank you to all the workers at the Chrysler Trim Plant who believed in them and have given their support. You’re the best! Cheers!
