‘Blunt impact’

At the end of their rope
Durham Regional Police Constable Basil Odei, who works out of
the Pickering police station, leads his team of fellow police offi-
cers during a fund-raising challenge to raise money for the Lung
Association. The ‘Pull for Kids’ event pitted Durham officers
against their counterparts from Peel Region, in which each team
had to pull a fire truck along a course in a bid for the best time.

OPG donates $1 million to Ajax hospital for diagnostic clinic
BY TONY DOYLE
News Editor
Local doctors have acquired
an impressive set of new eyes for
detecting a wide-range of ail-
ments, thanks to a $1-million do-
nation from Ontario Power Gen-
eration (OPG).
Officials with the Ajax and
Pickering Health Centre (APHC)
and OPG, along with dozens of
other guests, gathered Wednes-
day night at the Pickering Nu-
clear Information Centre for the
unveiling of the new ‘Ontario
Power Generation Nuclear Medi-
cine Clinic’.
The clinic, which hospital of-
ficials are optimistic will be oper-
ating this fall, will allow doctors
to focus exams on various organs
within the body and how they are
functioning and see if there are
any abnormalities that would oth-
erwise not be detected through
other diagnostic testing.
The announcement also served
to bring the hospital’s Vital Signs
campaign into sharp focus as it
works toward its goal of raising
$13.7 million as part of $98.6
million in expansion plans. The
Province has committed $56.6
million, and officials are looking
to local government for the other
$28.3 million.
The municipal request is part
of the $100 million that APHC
and Lakeridge Health Corpora-
tion, which services east and
north Durham, have asked the
Region for as part of a combined
$409.5-million project.
Vital Signs campaign chair-
man Gord Simmonds told the au-
dience the APHC emergency
room was initially built to handle
20,000 patients per year, but cur-
rently copes with more than
40,000 visits and will face 60,000

With police officers by his side,
double-murder suspect Mont-
gomery Harmon collapsed and died
suddenly in hospital –– only hours
after he was arrested for the blud-
geoning deaths of his wife and six-
year-old daughter.
An autopsy showed the Picker-
ing man died of a massive blood
clot in the lungs at 11:30 a.m.
Wednesday, four-and-a-half hours
after homicide detectives arrested
him at his bedside at Ajax and Pick-
ering Health Centre.
The 52-year-old was to have
been charged with two counts of
second-degree murder in the deaths
of Marcia Harmon, 42, and daugh-
ter Danielle.
Durham Regional Police discov-
ered the grisly murder scene Mon-
day morning when they located the
bodies of the mother and child lay-
ing on a bed side by side in a room
on the second-floor of their Lydia
Crescent home.
Autopsies showed that both suf-
fered “multiple blunt impact” in-
juries to the head, Dr. Barry McLel-
lan, regional coroner for the eastern
Greater Toronto Area, told a news
conference at Lakeridge Health Os-
hawa yesterday.
“In both cases they suffered sig-
nificant head trauma... multiple in-
juries that would be compatible
with a beating... to the head and fa-
cial area predominantly... An instru-
ment has been identified,” Dr.
McLellan said.
A steel mallet, similar in size to
a hammer, was seized from the fam-
ily home as the murder weapon,
Durham Regional Police revealed
yesterday.
Mr. Harmon was found in an up-
stairs bedroom unconscious from a
suspected attempted suicide by
drug overdose, possibly prescrip-
tion pills.
Mr. Harmon had been at Ajax

and Pickering Health Centre
under police guard since
Monday while homicide de-
tectives awaited medical
clearance to interview him.
Police said Mr. Harmon had
been drifting in and out of
consciousness, but investiga-
tors were told he was expect-
ed to survive.
At 7 a.m. Wednesday,
after he was removed from
intensive care, police were
cleared to speak with Mr.
Harmon. He was then arrest-
ed at his bedside.
Detectives were arranging
to have a justice of the peace
attend the hospital and re-
mand Mr. Harmon into the
custody of the Whitby Jail,
which would then have as-
sumed responsibility from
police for guarding the sus-
pect.
“He had been under
round-the-clock watch,” said
Sergeant Jim Grimley, who
added Mr. Harmon was not
discharged and was to remain
in hospital.
Two detectives were with
Mr. Harmon when it’s be-
lieved he got up to use the
washroom and suddenly col-
lapsed. Attempts to revive
him failed.
When he died Mr. Har-
mon was in police custody;
therefore Ontario’s Special
Investigation Unit is probing
the circumstances surround-
ing his death.
SIU spokesman John
Ansell said investigators are
looking into Mr. Harmon’s
medical condition and treat-
ment he received from the
time he was found by police
and his death.
“He was being watched
by two Durham Regional Po-
lice officers when he died,”
he said, adding there was no
evidence of any physical con-
frontation.
Although toxicology tests
will be completed, medical
staff suspected Mr. Harmon
was suffering from an over-
dose when he arrived at hos-
pital, the coroner said, adding
Mr. Harmon did not have
physical self-inflicted in-
juries.
Dr. McLellan said a pul-
monary embolism, or mas-
sive blood clot in the lungs, is
a medically “recognized
complication” in cases in-
volving patients who have
been in an unconscious state.
The complication can arise
when a person has been con-
fined to a bed for a lengthy
period, the coroner said.
With Mr. Harmon dead,
police admit they may never
know what led to the terrible
tragedy that has obliterated a
family and shocked the com-
munity.
Detectives will now con-
tinue the murder investiga-
tion under the authority of
local coroner Dr. John Swain
in the hope of providing an-
swers to the victims’ surviv-
ing family members on both
sides, and a future inquest.
“The family is at a com-
plete loss as to why this has
happened,” lead homicide de-
tective Brian Osborne said
earlier.
Police were not aware of
any prior history of domestic
problems at the residence and
had no prior dealings with the
husband or wife. The investi-
gation will include looking
into Mr. Harmon’s medical
history and the possibility he
was being treated for depres-
sion or some other form of
mental illness, although de-
tectives would not comment
yesterday.
Police officers were sum-
moned to the home at Dixie
Road and Finch Avenue at
8:30 a.m. Monday after a 911
call from Danielle’s grand-
mother, Louise Scarlett.
Pickering firefighters
forced entry through a side
window and police officers
then entered and searched the
home, locating the bodies.
Dr. McLellan could not
say whether the victims were
killed in their sleep, the order
of the attacks or when the
murders occurred.
An inquest must be held
into Mr. Harmon’s death
since he was in police cus-
tody at the time. However,
Dr. McLellan said a decision
has not been made on
whether the inquest will
probe the circumstances of
the slayings.
Although police would
not comment on the issue,
Mr. Harmon’s arrest for sec-
ond-degree murder suggests
the evidence did not support
the killings involved planning
and deliberation, the require-
ment for a first-degree
charge.
The funeral for Marcia
and Danielle Harmon will be
held April 6 at 10 a.m. at Car-
ruthers Creek Church, Bayly
Street, Ajax. Visitation will
be held April 4-5 at McEach-
nie Funeral Home, 29 Old
Kingston Rd.

Environment Minister Eliza-
beth Witmer will consider the
Durham Catholic school board’s
concerns over York Region’s pro-
posed water pipeline when she
considers York’s environmental as-
sessment (EA), says a ministry
spokesman.
Both school boards in Durham
have expressed concerns to the
Province over the project.
To meets its long-term water
needs, York is proposing a water
pipeline from the Petticoat Creek
Conservation area on Lake Ontario
in Pickering, up Whites Road to
York. A local group and the City of
Pickering are opposed to the
pipeline.
Ministry official Pamela Hub-
bard in a letter to Grant Andrews,
education director of the Durham
Catholic District School Board,
stressed the project has not been
approved.
“It should be pointed out that no
decision has been made about York
Region’s EA to date, since the Re-
gion has not submitted its EA to
the ministry,” she stated. “The is-
sues you have raised in your letter
will be considered by the minister
when she makes her decision.”
Ms. Hubbard outlined the envi-
ronmental assessment process.
The first step, preparation of the
terms of reference, began in Janu-
ary 1998 and saw York hold infor-
mation sessions, an information
workshop and provide a chance for
the public to comment. The terms
of reference, which describes what
work is required to address envi-
ronmental issues, was approved by
the ministry roughly two years
ago.
York is currently preparing the
EA for the project. The public and
review agencies can again com-
ment when the EA has been sub-
mitted and published. When the
comment period is over, the minis-
ter will decide if the project goes
ahead.
At the Feb. 12 Catholic board
meeting, trustees voted 6-2 in
favour of asking the education
ministry to stop the proposed
pipeline or make sure other alter-
natives are examined because of
concerns over possible dangers to
students during the construction
period.
Pickering Trustee Jim McCaf-
ferty at the meeting said construc-
tion truck traffic along Whites
Road would impact local schools,
since motorists seeking to avoid
the work area would choose other
routes, presenting an increased
danger to pupils walking to school
in several areas.
Mr. Andrews has said board
staff does not believe there is a po-
tential danger to students.

High price tag
on vaccination
program
To the editor:
Re: ‘Flu bug swatted in Durham’
March 21.
Flu bug swatted, but at what
cost?
Health Canada statistics show
this was a mild year for the flu. Re-
ported cases of influenza were
down across Canada, not only in
Ontario where universal vaccina-
tion is being attempted. Despite
this information, the Region’s asso-
ciate medical officer of health gave
the credit to the vaccination pro-
gram.
Dr. Donna Reynolds refers to
“free” clinics, but the doctors, nurs-
es and staff who worked there did
not work for free. Patient visits to
doctors’offices to get the shot were
billed to OHIP and therefore were
not free. Administering the flu shot
cost Ontario taxpayers hundreds of
thousands of dollars above the $38
million in provincial funding.
Dr. Reynolds reported 30 labo-
ratory-confirmed cases of the flu in
Durham Region this year, the same
as last year. She failed to mention
the thousands of Canadians treated
for oculo-respiratory syndrome, an
adverse side effect to the shot.
She also failed to mention the
letter in the Canadian Medical As-
sociation Journal by Dr. Vittorio
Demicheli, a leading epidemiolo-
gist. He states, “That claims about
the cost effectiveness of wide-
spread vaccination are dubious and
the stated aim of the program to
ease the pressure on emergency
rooms during the flu season is illu-
sory.” A British study found pre-
venting one case of clinical in-
fluenza costs on average $6,200.00
Besides the financial costs of
fighting the flu with a man-made
vaccine, there are the potential
long-term health risks associated
with injecting the toxic ingredients
of the vaccine into the body. The
harmful effects of repeated yearly
injections of thimerosal (a mercury
derivative and a recognized devel-
opment toxicant) and formalde-
hyde (a recognized carcinogen)
both ingredients of the flu shot, are
just not being recognized.
It appears the people who the
vaccination program benefits the
most are the vaccine manufacturers
and the health-care workers paid to
administer the shot and promote
the program.
Dr. Robert Sasse,

The differing views presented by
municipal councils in Durham and by
the Region itself with regard to the
Greater Toronto Services Board make
for interesting if obscure reading.
Typical of politicians everywhere,
once you read between the lines you re-
alize most who voted on GTSB options
did so for, in the words of Ajax Mayor
Steve Parish, “political jealousy and
fear”.
Fear perhaps that if a GTSB is estab-
lished, the regional level of government
might be dropped and all those 19 re-
gional councillors who voted them-
selves eight-per cent pay raises last
week would lose their juicy growing
salaries?
While that’s one possible take on the
discussions, another revolves around the
notion Durham politicians have never
warmed up to an association with the
other three 905 regions and especially
with Toronto itself.
But like it or not, and the benefits
will in future far outweigh the costs, our
tie to the GTA is here to stay. That enor-
mous market to our west is an incredible
spur to business development, econom-
ic health and all the other good things
we continue to receive.
Of course, such growth has costs. As
Oshawa Councillor John Gray says of
the GTSB, “We must be very careful.
We can be very myopic and not recog-
nize the danger we do ourselves by say-
ing, ‘We don’t want anything to do with
Toronto.’ Putting on the blinders is not
going to solve our problems.”
Indeed, co-operation with Toronto
and the other regions in a well-support-
ed GTSB could mean more money
flowing from provincial and federal cof-
fers to our area. And no other issue com-
pares to the need for efficient, effective
transit links. That’s where the GTSB
should focus its efforts.
An attempt to take on too many is-
sues and duties and to spread itself too
thin would weaken the GTSB’s effec-
tiveness. Its essential role must be to im-
prove and expand GO services, to im-
prove municipal transit links throughout
the GTA, to push for better regional
roads and, of utmost importance, to im-
prove the highway system throughout
the GTA, but especially in Durham.
Agreeing to be an active participant
in the GTSB does not mean, as some
would suggest, favouring amalgamation
with Toronto. It simply comes to terms
with the reality that as Durham grows,
its municipalities can’t sit in isolation,
hopeful a few voices here will be heard
by the powers that be at Queen’s Park.
We need to work together for improve-
ments and that’s where the GTSB, as a
planning and services board with re-
sponsibility for GTA transit, is essential.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Planning, transit should
be GTSB priority
Moving goods, people means dollars
and sense to all governments in GTA
My bumper sticker says it all —
I do indeed brake for old grave-
yards.
I have always had a passion for
exploring 19th-century graveyards.
One of the most peaceful places I
know is the pioneer cemetery in
south Oshawa, high on Bonnie Brae
Point, overlooking Lake Ontario.
Here, in this graveyard are the sto-
ries, lives and experiences of some
of the area’s earliest settlers who
were the founders of the communi-
ty. Marriages, births, epidemics and
deaths, as conveyed by the stones,
are all part of the local history and
the foundation of the community.
Graveyards are places where, if
you’ll pardon the pun, history
comes alive. Wander through and
you will undoubtedly see family
names familiar to you as street,
school or park names in your com-
munity. For me, much of the fasci-
nation with graveyards stems from
the wonderful examples of art found
on the gravestones. Gravestone mo-
tifs often represent the earliest ex-
amples of folk art in a community.
The depictions of willow trees,
urns, clasping and pointing hands,
mourning figures and flowers offer
a unique and intimate glimpse into
19th-century life.
In an era when illiteracy was
common, motifs were chosen with
great care to convey messages of
faith and society.
Themes relating to life, death
and the hope for everlasting life are
portrayed on the stones.
We need to do more as a society
to help protect these historical re-
sources within our community. Van-
dalism, neglect and development
are the worst enemies of our pioneer
graveyards. Education is a key com-
ponent of insuring the viability of
these historic resting places.
By all means explore, however
do keep in mind graveyards are first
and foremost burial grounds and
should be treated as such.
Rubbings are not usually recom-
mended as they can cause damage
to stones.
Stones are often unstable and
may topple so please supervise chil-
dren. Through education we can in-
stil a sense of pride and respect.
Children who respect graveyards
are less likely to grow up to be the
vandals of tomorrow. So the next
time you are walking or driving by a
graveyard, take the time to explore
and educate your children about the
importance of these historical trea-
sures — you just might see me
there.

“Population growth is a silent and steady
phenomenon,” said Mr. Simmonds, adding, “A
population of this current and projected size de-
mands and deserves excellent care.”
The five main components of the redevelop-
ment are the construction of a new emergency
services department, the development of an am-
bulatory care services centre, major clinical up-
grades, new rehabilitation facilities, and expan-
sion and modernization of diagnostic imaging
services.
“If you live in this town five years from now,
hopefully the expansion will be complete,” said
Mr. Simmonds in an interview.
He added, “it’s one of the greatest fund-rais-
ing challenges we’ve ever had, maybe the great-
est,” but said he’s confident the hospital can
raise its $13.7 million share.
With the nuclear medicine process, a tiny
amount of radioactive material is either injected
into the patient or inhaled and, following a
waiting period, a scan is performed. Dr. Dennis
Huang stressed the procedure was “safe” and
said doctors can target everything from bone
scans, to lung, heart, liver and gall bladder
scans, to studying blood flow.
“This will provide a functional study of pa-
tients, rather than an anatomical study,” Dr.
Huang, a radiologist with the Rouge Valley
Health System, which encompasses the APHC
and the Centenary Health Centre in Scarbor-
ough, said in an interview following the unveil-
ing.
OPG president and chief executive officer
Ron Osborne noted 40 per cent of employees at
the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station live
within the hospital’s catchment area, so offi-
cials want to ensure they had access to the best
health care available.
He also added the donation fits the compa-
ny’s profile.
“It’s nuclear medicine, there’s nothing more
appropriate,” he said.
“Not everyone understands that nuclear is
good for you.”

Julia Cornish one

honours program in
United Kingdom
An Ajax high school graduate, at-
tending college in the U.S., has been
selected to spend a year studying in
London, England.
Julia Cornish, a Pickering High
School graduate, is a first-year student
at Houghton College in western New
York. She is among a select group of
25 first-year students chosen to take
first-year honours program studies for
the spring 2001 semester in the United
Kingdom.
The program will combine a chal-
lenging curriculum with overseas trav-
el, in an ideal setting for the study of
literature, history, philosophy, fine arts
and other courses.
“We hope to introduce them to a
level of serious study earlier than they
typically would experience as a col-
lege student,” stated Dr. Cameron
Airhart, program director and
Houghton professor of history. “We
hope to introduce them to the de-
mands for excellence that the real
world expects.”
Final selection for the program, ap-
plied for by students, is made after on-
campus interviews.
Houghton College is a Christian
liberal arts college of 1,200 students.

Spring flowers help fight cancer
The arrival of spring means the
Canadian Cancer Society’s annual
daffodil festival will be fully in
bloom in Ajax and Pickering this
weekend.
Members of the Beta Sigma Phi
Sorority, along with local seniors and
the Optimist Youth Group, will be
selling the beautiful yellow flowers at
several locations throughout Ajax and
Pickering today (Friday) and tomor-
row.
Last year, more than $37,000 was
raised in the two communities.
The funds raised through daffodil
sales this year will be used for cancer
research and to support health pro-
motion and cancer prevention by
early detection.
Volunteers will be selling bou-
quets of 10 daffodils for $5.
The Canadian Cancer Society can
be reached at 686-1516.

DREADING THE ALLERGY SEASON?
When illness hits a fam-
ily member, teenagers gen-
erally find it hard to talk
about it with their parents
and friends, says Fran
King, a guidance counsel-
lor at R.S. McLaughlin
Collegiate & Vocational In-
stitute in Oshawa.
She says young people
don’t want to worry their
parents further or bother
their friends, so they often
remain quiet. But they’re
still troubled, and this can
lead to a lack of concentra-
tion and other problems at
school.
To help young people
open up, Ms. King has
started teen support groups
at public high schools in
Port Perry, Pickering and
Whitby.
“It’s to help the kids
deal with life-threatening
illness or serious illness in
their family,” said Ms.
King.
Seven weeks of sessions
at the schools are followed
by a group session in which
all three groups come to-
gether for ‘Celebration
Day’ at Camp Samac.
“The focus of the group
is letting them talk about
their feelings and helping
them to cope with the situ-
ation,” said Ms. King.
Pilot projects were held
last year at Dunbarton High
School in Pickering and
Eastdale Collegiate & Vo-
cational Institute in Os-
hawa. Ms. King applied for
and received a grant of 10
supply days from the
Durham District School
Board’s Bertelsmann Fund
to continue the program.
Financial help also came
from Hearth Place and
Hospice Durham with
Whitby Mental Health
Centre acting in a consulta-
tive role.
This year, support
groups have recently start-
ed at Port Perry High
School, Pine Ridge Sec-
ondary School and Henry
Street High School.
Ms. King says a total of
10 spots remain open for
students who want to par-
ticipate, with four spots
each available at the Port
Perry and Pine Ridge high
schools, and two places re-
maining in Whitby.
Students from other
schools are welcome to
join a group, space permit-
ting, with the condition that
they must be able to get
themselves to the sessions.
The weekly group ses-
sions take place on Tues-
days at 2:30 p.m. at Henry
Street, on Tuesdays at
11:15 a.m. at Port Perry,
and on Mondays at 11:45
a.m. at Pine Ridge.
Parents and students can
contact Ms. King at R.S.

Visions of The Garden
The lawn-visions of lush
green carpet, of children frolick-
ing, of dogs playing fetch.
Visions of lifeless grass, of
ripped up patches from skunks
and raccoons, of dandelions
and clover.
Where should you begin?
Establishing an action plan for
the maintenance and care of the
home lawn is an ideal place to
start. Secondly, obtaining prop-
er advice from garden centres
that sell lawn care products will
enable you to execute your
action plan properly. Lastly,
making a “time commitment”
to devote to the lawn will help
you obtain the desired results.
In these hectic busy lives
we all lead, perhaps the care of
your home lawn can be viewed
as a therapeutic endeavour - a
time to leave the cell phone,
pager and daytimer in the
house while you allow yourself
an hour to spend outside beau-
tifying your outdoor space and
reviving your spirit.
The home lawn, just like
the human body, needs to be
nourished and fed in order to
survive. Just as we need water
so does your lawn - remember
that those tiny blades of grass
are living, growing entities -
just as we need vitamins and
minerals so does the lawn need
fertilizer.
At times when we become
ill and require antibiotics to
build up our immune systems,
so will the home lawn require
additional help in the way of
lawn insecticides or herbicides
to combat the serious life - zap-
ping effects of lawn insects or
infestations of weeds. With reg-
ular treatment your home lawn
will flourish and thrive.
The number one step of
your home lawn maintenance
plan may be the application of
“Crabgrass Control” Fertilizer -
apply now to eliminate the ger-
mination of seeds. Or treat the
lawn to a boost after the long
cold winter by applying the
first dose of nutrients in the
form of spring fertilizer. Soon
the grass responds by “green-
ing up” and actively growing.
When the lawn is dry a
spring raking is essential to
remove debris, twigs and
thatch that have accumulated
since the last raking in the fall.
As the days become warmer,
“topdressing” the lawn with
seed and soil will thicken up
the existing grass and help to
improve the appearance and
texture.
Before your first mowing
check the lawn mower blades
for sharpness and cleanliness;
check all fluid levels and move
the lawn mower from the back
corner of the garage/tool shed
(where lawnmowers “hiber-
nate” over winter) to an easily
accessible area at the front.
Try not to view home lawn
care as a chore but as an oppor-
tunity for aerobic exercise, or a
“greet and meet” with the
neighbors as well as your con-
tribution to beautifying not
only your home but the envi-
ronment.
Until next week’s column
on “WHAT’S NEW AND HOT”
sit back and “Vision Your
Garden”.

The Genuine Factory
Outlet is recognized as one of
the best outlets in North
America for home decor prod-
ucts.
It is a surprise to every
new customer that walks
through it’s doors.
Located in Ajax south of
Hwy 401 at Westney Rd. across
from the Go Station, the build-
ing may fool you. Once you
step inside you’ll stand in awe
as you realize the shoppers
paradise you have just discov-
ered by its sheer size and
quantity of products.
It is also amazingly clear
and uncluttered for an outlet.
Everything in the store is very
well organized and easy to get
at and the selection is huge.
The Genuine Factory
Outlet decorates every room in
your home with over 5,000
products. The layout of the
factory outlet reflects the large
assortment of products manu-
factured in their 50,000 square
foot factory adjacent to the
Outlet.
From bed and kitchen to
the bath, fabric and rug shops,
their friendly, knowledgeable
staff takes time to ensure cus-
tomer satisfaction. It’s impos-
sible not to notice the friendly
knowledgeable approach by
the staff in the store.
THE MOST ASKED
QUESTION TO THE
OWNER BERNARD BARRY
“HOW DID YOU CREATE
SUCH A HOME DECOR
STORE THAT IS CONTINU-
ALLY CHANGING WITH
THE TRENDS? EVERY
TIME I COME INTO THE
OUTLET IT GETS BETTER
AND BETTER”.
The foundation is stocked
with over half a million yards
of fabric and 37 years of manu-
facturing experience.
The real secret of our suc-
cess is our fellow associates
who are knowledgeable; a per-
fect example is Michelle
Albero who helps present the
40,000 towels in over 20
colours in Canada’s largest
selection.
The Genuine Factory
Outlet’s Hall of Fame contin-
ues to develop these types of
people.
The reason of our success
over the years is our staff. We
have people who are well

Tired of Your Garage Door? Call the Garaga Guy He’ll Fix It For you.
In Canada, Garaga
replaces 225,000 to 250,000
garage doors a year. To
avoid problems, and avoid
getting fed up before you
should, you would do well
to have your current door
repaired or a new one
installed by a recognized
expert.
Dan Hill of Autograph
Door Systems is one of the
Garaga Experts, the largest
network of garage door spe-
cialists in Canada. And like
other members of this net-
work, Garaga selected Dan
for his expertise, his experi-
ence, the soundness of his
business and his attention to
detail.
To ensure that hey
receive complete training via
the Garaga Tech program,
the “Garaga Guys”, as mem-
bers of the Garaga Experts
network are known, must
respect a strict code of ethics,
guaranteeing your peace of
mind and your full satisfac-
tion. Furthermore, they ben-
efit from the exclusive
“Garaga Experts” warranty,
a warranty that has the full
backing of Garaga.
As for Dan he believes
that the desire to satisfy
clients accounts for the net-
works success. “Customer
satisfaction is what has
allowed us to become who
we are. You don’t fool
around with that, we the
Garaga guys, subscribe to a
philosophy. We commit to a
training program, and we
always seek to solve our cus-
tomers problems to ensure e
their full satisfaction,” he
asserts.
Dan believes that you
have to know your job to
improve the lifespan of
doors. “Durability depends
on two things: the quality of
the parts and the quality of
the installation. A poorly
installed door will wear out
prematurely.”
He also considers a
Garaga Experts to be an
insurance policy of sorts. “A
large part of the doors we
install are made-to-measure.
Especially in the case of ren-
ovations. You have to know
how to take proper measure-
ments, to avoid making a
mistake on an order and
making a door that doesn't
work properly.”

Onus on principals, parents for special health needs: Catholic board
BY MIKE RUTA
Staff Writer
Open communication lines are
the key to the Durham Catholic Dis-
trict School Board’s exceptional
health conditions policy, says pro-
gram superintendent Gerry Blake.
Trustees approved the new poli-
cy at the March 22 board meeting in
Oshawa.
The policy places responsibility
on both the school principal and the
parent/guardian in accommodating
students with specific health needs
in the school system.
“We didn’t have a policy in this
area and I think that what we want-
ed to do is ensure there’s an obliga-
tion to the parent to inform us of an
exceptional health condition of a
student,” said Mr. Blake.
He said principals, parents and
other stakeholders have called for
such a policy, and recalled a past in-
cident where there was confusion
over how to handle the medical con-
dition of a student in the school en-
vironment.
The parent/guardian must notify
the school principal, when register-
ing their child or earlier, of the stu-
dent’s exceptional health condition,
provide the school with relevant
documentation required to safely in-
clude the child and give the princi-
pal permission to share the informa-
tion where it is appropriate.
Principals are required to make
sure the parent/guardian is aware of
his responsibility and complete an
entry process before the student ar-
rives at school. As well, principals
must ensure physician’s instructions
and other relevant documents are
submitted, and make sure the school
has access to community/medical
contacts.
The principal, working with the
parent/guardian and any required
medical personnel, must develop an
emergency plan and conduct emer-
gency drills to determine the plan’s
effectiveness.
“This is a very important policy,”
said Mr. Blake.

AJAX-PICKERING BOARD OF TRADE
Z-Art gallery, owned and oper-
ated by Michael Jaensch, has been in
business for over ten years now.
Originally located in Pickering Village
the first Z-Art was destroyed by fire in
September 1991 when the entire strip
mall in which it was located was
engulfed. But Michael is a persistent
man and his dream was not destined to
die in a fire. Z-Art re-opened at Dixie
Road, Pickering and flourished. Last
year we expanded to our present larg-
er location located at 1822 Whites
Road, in the Amberlea Plaza,
Pickering.
Michael invites all past, present
and future customers to drop into the
store and see our display of hand
wrapped canvases. This form of fram-
ing involves seamlessly wrapping a
liner with custom chosen material that
matches in colour, texture and style the
canvas being framed. The frame, care-
fully chosen to co-ordinate with the
liner, is applied along with a matching
fillet. The end product makes for a dis-
tinctive and imaginative décor piece as
well as enhancing the canvas. Michael
is proud to provide this very personal
style of framing.
If it is quality framing at an
affordable price that you want - Go to
the experts. Z-Art has been framing
limited edition art and originals for
over a decade. Our friendly staff with
combined experience of 20, 15 and 5
years respectively is imaginative,
knowledgeable and eager to provide
the best customer service possible.
Donít leave your expensive and irre-
placeable pieces to an amateur. We
know our business and we are proud
to stand behind it.
St. John Ambulance has a histo-
ry that dates back almost 1000 years. It
started in 1080 when Benedictine
monks, attending at a hospital in
Jerusalem for pilgrims, took the white
cross as their symbol. This led to the
development of the Order of St. John.
Today St. John Ambulance is
divided onto two groups.
The St. John Ambulance
Association is a network of medical
professionals and program develop-
ment specialists who develop first aid
and health promotion courses, which
are taught by about 7,000 trained
instructors to thousands of Canadians
each year.
In the year 2000 over 450,000
people received first aid training and
over 350,000 received CPR training.
The St. John Ambulance brigade
is a group of nearly 13,000 uniformed
volunteers who serve their community
in many ways, from providing first aid
at public events such as the CAW
Picnic, Fiesta Week and track and field
meets.
Michele Cormier, Sales and
Marketing Consultant for the Durham
Region Branch, says they’re currently
working in conjunction with the
Workplace Safety and Insurance Board
to ensure that workplaces across the
region have adequately trained staff
and proper equipment on-site.
“Workplaces must meet specific
standards, it’s the law,” says Michele.
“We can help them with information
booklets, training and supply them
with first aid equipment and sup-
plies.”
Courses are taught at facilities in
Oshawa, Whitby and Ajax in such
areas as Emergency First Aid,
Standard First Aid, Adult CPR, Basic
Rescuer and even Wilderness First
Aid.

Following are new movie releases
being screened at cinemas in Ajax and
Pickering this weekend.
SOMEONE LIKE YOU
Starring Ashley Judd, Hugh Jack-
man, Ellen Barkin, Greg Kinnear,
Marisa Tomei.
Directed by Tony Goldwyn.
Jane Goodale (Judd) has everything
going for her. She’s a producer on a pop-
ular daytime talk show, and is in a hot
romance with the show’s dashing execu-
tive, Ray (Kinnear). But when the rela-
tionship goes awry, Jane begins an ex-
tensive study of the male animal in an at-
tempt to understand how and why Ray
has so suddenly and inexplicably jilted
her.
Turning to Freud, Darwin, her own
lovelorn friends, and a cabinet full of
theories, Jane begins a safari of sorts to
track down the strange lair of the human
heart. Along the way, she puts her “stud-
ies” and romantic misadventures to use
as a pseudonymous sex columnist —
and becomes a sensation in the process.

Odeon Ajax 10 Cinemas).
SPY KIDS
Starring Alan Cumming, Carla Gugi-
no, Antonio Banderas, Teri Hatcher,
Tony Shalhoub, Danny Trejo.
Directed by Robert Rodriguez.
Gregorio (Banderas) and Ingrid
(Gugino) are the two greatest secret
agents the world has ever known: mas-
ters of disguise, mavens of invention,
able to stop wars before they even start.
Working for separate countries, they
are sent to eliminate their most danger-
ous enemy... each other. But in an exotic
corner of the world when they finally
come face to face, they fall in love in-
stead and embark on the most dangerous
mission they have ever faced: raising a
family.
Now, nine years later, after their re-
tirement, having exchanged the adven-
ture of espionage for parenthood,Grego-
rio and Ingrid Cortez are called back into
action.
When their former colleagues —the
world’s most formidable spies — start
disappearing one by one, the Cortezes
are forced to take on techno-wizard
Fegan Floop (Cumming) and his evil,
egg-headed sidekick, Minion (Shal-
houb).
But, when the unthinkable happens
and they too disappear, there are only
two people in the world who can rescue
them... their kids.
Armed with a bag of high-tech gad-
gets and out-of-this-world transporta-
tion, Carmen (Alexa Vega) and Juni
(Daryl Sabara) bravely jet through the
air, dive through the seas and criss-cross
the globe in a series of thrilling adven-
tures on a mission to stop Floop, save
their parents... and maybe even the
world.

TOMCATS

beth, Bill Maher, Jerry O’Connell, Di-
rected by Gregory Poirer.
Michael Delaney is a struggling car-
toonist who must get his best friend,
Kyle Bremmer, an avowed bachelor, to
wed within 30 days in order to win a bet
and save himself from financial ruin.
Things get complicated when Michael
falls for Natalie Parker, the woman he
propositioned to be Kyle’s bride.

I attend Carruthers Creek
Community Church, formerly
called Steeple Hill, and was
very grateful last Sunday
when our Pastor Dave Collins
talked about keeping
promises. Before a jam
packed congregation of
almost 700 he said that he
used to promise his daughter
Rachel and son Matt that he
would take them to the Dairy
Queen and they would remind
him to keep his promise. That
nice plug is typical of the
support that we have received
from so many of the churches
in Scarborough and the
Durham Region since we
opened over 5 years ago.
I remember one Sunday
night when Pastor Sam
Martin from Bayfair Baptist
brought a Greyhound bus
filled with a visiting choir
from Tennessee over to the
DQ after an evening service.
It filled the whole store! On
another occasion I invited
Pastor Sam and his family for
free dessert at the DQ. In the
evening service he announced
to the whole congregation
that Charles had invited the
Pastor and the whole church
family over for free Dairy
Queen! Fortunately
everybody paid!
On many occasions Pastor
Craig Burton from Malvern
Christian Assembly has
brought family and friends
over to the store.
Many youth groups
including Forestbrook live at
our store and many of the
girls come in just to watch
our guys work! Kidding!
Some young mothers from
Churchill Heights Baptist and
other churches are regulars in
our play centre.
I WANT TO THANK ALL
THE CHURCHES IN THE
AREA FOR THEIR GREAT
SUPPORT. I WISH I HAD
SPACE TO MENTION
MORE.
However for me one of the
most rewarding experiences
is to see some of the
teenagers who work at our
store inviting their co-workers
out to church.
Not only are there a lot of
great churches in this area but
many more are starting up
and others are involved in
building programs as we
speak. Whoever said statistics
show that less people are
going to church must not
have been talking about this
area. For example, On Easter
Sunday our church will go to
two services to handle all the
new growth.
With Easter approaching
may I encourage you to think
about going to church this
Sunday? Speaking of
promises, one of my favourite
Bible verses spoken by Christ
was, “If you seek me you will
find me.” No matter what
your beliefs or denomination
I want to ask you this
question.
Have you been to church
lately?

Paris holidays pre-paid
Canadians can now get
trips to Paris packaged
like Caribbean holidays
This is the first summer season
that a Canadian travel company has
been able to offer air transportation
packaged with hotel accommodation
every week for a singular pre-paid
price.
Air Transat Holidays have out-
lined both their three- and four-day
vacations, and their seven-day vaca-
tions to Paris in their current Europe
brochure.
That means no more mixing and
matching with chances of not getting
what you want.
Up until now, the pricing of trips
to Europe was generally determined
by taking the air transportation price
and adding it to the accommodation
price.
Then on top of that you had to
budget for airport transfers, restau-
rant meals, car rentals, local trans-
portation, attractions, entertainment
and more. There were a lot of deci-
sions to be made and there was al-
ways the possibility of not getting ex-
actly what you want.
Now, and throughout the season,
you can choose from a selection of
weekly departures to Paris and your
package will include air transporta-
tion on Air Transat, accommodation
for three, four or seven days, and
highlights of the city on a River Seine
cruise.
Best of all, it can be booked in one
phone call and for one pre-deter-
mined brochure price. Ask your trav-
el agent for details.

PICKERING —The Pick-
ering Figure Skating Club will
end its season with a fun-filled
day on the ice this Saturday,
March 31.
The club hosts its biannual
Fun Competition at the Picker-
ing Recreation Complex’s De-
laney Rink from 8:15 a.m.
until 4:30 p.m.
The event features several
different categories in which
the skaters can participate. The
show involves all levels —
from as low as Canskate
through to the club’s senior
skaters.
Young skaters starting out
will be involved in element
and solo events.
A variety of dance events,
including similar pairs, shad-
ow dance and dance variations
will also take place. Team ele-
ments is an event where
skaters are placed in groups
randomly and each skater per-
forms a certain element of fig-
ure skating, and are judged as
a team.
Also included in the day is
an interpretive free skate event
where skaters hear the music
only three times, then must
skate a solo to the music.
The final events of the day
are the ‘showcase’ numbers
where the skater uses music,
costume and props to present
an entertaining solo.
Several of the club’s skaters
have selected the music, de-
signed and created their own
costumes and choreographed
their own solos.
Spectators are welcome to
attend. There’s no admission
charge.
Fun Competition wraps
up skating season
