Pickering staff to begin Official Plan work Waterfront vision starts to take shape BY SUSAN O’NEILL Staff Writer PICKERING —The City is preparing to move ahead with its vision for development near the Pickering waterfront. Councillors voted Monday to direct staff to begin a City-initiat- ed Official Plan (OP) amendment for the entire Liverpool Road wa- terfront node, which extends southward from Commerce Street on both sides of Liverpool Road to Lake Ontario. According to City staff, the process is necessary to allow the development guidelines being created through an ongoing re- view of the area to be implement- ed. “At this stage I’m happy to see this process reinvigorated,” said Mayor Wayne Arthurs, who re- ported development applications for the area will likely be consid- ered by council in June. The City will hold a public meeting next month to consider potential amendments to the OP to implement the results of the ongoing Liverpool Road South Area Detailed Review. That review, which was trig- gered by development applica- tions, will establish land use and Durham violent crime statistics soar in 2000 Police chief calls region’s numbers ‘very disturbing’ BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer Violent crime in Durham sky- rocketed 15.9 per cent last year with more drugs and gunfire on the streets and physical and sexual as- saults, police say. Although the overall crime rate dropped slightly when property of- fences are included, the 2000 sta- tistics reflect an escalation in the “seriousness and degree of vio- lence”, Durham Regional Police Chief Kevin McAlpine said. A report on last year’s crime rates submitted to the Durham Po- lice Services Board shows alarm- ing increases of 23.2 per cent in sexual assaults, 10.7 per cent in as- saults, 48.9 per cent in weapons offences and 14.8 per cent in threatening. “Certainly any increase in crimes of violence causes all of us to be concerned. The numbers are very disturbing to us and they should be disturbing to the com- munity,” Chief McAlpine said in an interview. Despite the troubling statistics, the chief said random acts of vio- lence are not the norm in the re- gion and account for a very small percentage of crime. “A significant portion of that 15 per cent of violent crime is family- related, domestic-related. A lot of these are acts that are not random, they are incidents perpetrated by people who are purported to love each other,” he said. “Generally speaking I think Durham Region is and will contin- ue to be a safe place to live, work and play.” Chief McAlpine added reduc- ing criminal activity goes well be- yond policing and is a community responsibility. The workers, members of the International Association of Machinists, Local 5254, walked out at 12:01 a.m. Fri- day, March 2. The company paints and supplies plastic parts, includ- ing bumpers and side-mould- ings, for General Motors and Ford. Local president Tim Jack- son said the big issues for the union are a wage increase and “better language in the collec- tive agreement”. The four-year contract ex- pired at midnight on Dec. 30. Negotiations began in Novem- ber, but broke off March 1, Mr. Jackson said. The company has a produc- tion facility at Clements Road and Finley Avenue in Ajax and a warehouse on Orangebrook Court in Pickering. It operates three shifts, six days a week. Company officials couldn’t be reached for comment. Port Perry man faces charges in death of Pickering woman BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer A 31-year-old Port Perry man has been charged with criminal negligence and impaired driving causing the deaths of two people, from Oshawa and Pick- ering, after a horrific three-vehicle crash in Scugog. The police helicopter,Air 1, is being credited for assisting in the quick cap- ture of three suspects who allegedly abandoned a sport utility vehicle that had been involved in the collision and fled the scene on foot. Police said the chain collision oc- curred on Island Road at 12:20 a.m. March 2 when a southbound Chevy Cavalier driven by Ellen Brown, 60, of Pickering, was rear-ended by the Chevy Tahoe, which was also headed south. As a result of the impact, police said Ms. Brown’s car went out of control, spun across the centre line and collided with a northbound Pontiac Grand Prix driven by John Piccitto, 48, of Oshawa. The drivers of both cars were killed instantly in the crash, which occurred a kilometre south of the Great Blue Heron Charity Casino. Constable Carol Stenzel of the traf- fic management unit said an officer di- rected to an area by Air 1 flight ob- servers tracked down two of the sus- pects at a nearby residence a short time later. A third suspect returned to the scene about an hour later, she said. All three occupants of the Tahoe were taken to hospital, treated for minor injuries and subsequently arrested. Two were questioned and later released without being charged, Const. Stenzel said. Police suspect drinking and dri- ving caused the crash. “It’s a straight stretch of roadway with good visibility. There’s really no reason for this type of collision to hap- pen,” Const. Stenzel remarked. The road was shut down for the day as collision investigators examined the mangled wreckage and reconstructed the crash. William Allan Kane, of Demara Road, is charged with two counts each of impaired driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death and failing to remain causing death. Council also voted Monday to move forward with the review of two development applications from the Pickering Harbour Company for the area. The applications, which were tabled by council last June, propose the construction of 40 townhouse units adjacent to Liverpool Road and Wharf Street and the potential devel- opment of a marina and 140-unit hotel/ apartment complex with restaurant, retail, entertainment and office space. “This is a very valuable process,” said Ward 2 Regional Councillor Mark Holland, who noted the issue is “very important to the community. “Now it’s time to move forward, it’s time to look at the development applications.” He noted it’s only fair to all parties involved to reach some kind of con- clusion. He reported the final part of the Liverpool Road South Area Detailed Review is beginning and said it seems a “nautical village theme” is arising. He also pointed out “I will not support uses that do not enhance the community.” Coun. Holland also said he won’t support residential developments in the area. “We have to be cognizant of the balance of the different uses that are down there... we have to tread care- fully,” he said. PICKERING from page 1 City residents spike community centre idea PICKERING —A pro- posal to build a community centre in David Farr Park near Vaughan Willard Public School was met with opposi- tion at a public meeting last Thursday, a local councillor reports. However, there was some agreement on the need for a washroom facility in the park, which is heavily used by soccer and baseball teams and the Glendale Tennis Club. Ashley Jones, president of the tennis club, reported the meeting at William Dunbar Public School was held to gain input from area resi- dents about the proposal. And, although there wasn’t a lot of support for a communi- ty centre, he said the “issue is not dead yet”. Susan Mathieson, a mem- ber of the committee that suggested the idea on behalf of the tennis club, reported the idea “was to put some kind of a community centre in the park that provided washrooms and some kind of meeting space.” She noted there is a paved area near the tennis courts that the club had identified as a possible location, adding the tennis club was not proposing the use of any green space for a facility. But, Ward 2 local Coun- cillor Bill McLean said the comments at the meeting were “overwhelmingly” against the proposal. He noted the park, which is very well used, is “the heart of the Glendale com- munity”. And, he believes residents need to reach a consensus on what they want to see happen there. Incidents of domestic violence, which account for the majority of as- saults, dropped slightly by 0.4 per cent, to 2,871 in 2000 from 2,882 in 1999. While family violence went down in most municipalities, domestic as- saults went up 12.8 per cent in Whitby and 6.7 per cent in North Durham. Chuck Mercier, superintendent of crime management, attributed the ris- ing number of assaults (2,974 in 2000 from 2,686 in 1999) and sexual as- saults (659 from 535) to new profes- sional protocols, improved education and increased public awareness of do- mestic violence and child abuse. “There has been a greater emphasis over the years on making it more ac- ceptable to report (domestic and sexu- al assaults),” said Supt. Mercier, who noted stricter criteria requiring school officials and child protection agencies to report suspected abuse to police have been established in the past few years. The increase in violence is inter- twined with a dramatic rise in the num- ber of weapons and drug offences, po- lice say. Crimes with weapons climbed from 462 to 688 while drug offences jumped 53.3 per cent, from 820 to 1,257. A particularly disturbing trend has been the willingness of criminals to fire guns in public, putting innocent bystanders at risk, said Supt. Mercier, recalling recent public shootings that occurred in a Pickering townhouse complex and behind Durham Region police headquarters. “I think the seriousness of these events and (frequent) involvement of gunplay speaks to a serious problem,” Chief McAlpine said. More and more criminals “disre- gard the value of human life”, he said. Supt. Mercier said the higher drug numbers are the result of new special enforcement units in each division as- signed to target street-level dealing. The force plans to double the size of its drug squad this year, pending bud- get approval. Will an additional 47 officers that police plan to hire this year help? “Is it enough, will it ever be enough? Who knows,” Chief McAlpine shrugged. The homicide rate dropped slightly in 2000, with police investigating four murders and six attempted murders. The rate has climbed steadily since the 1970s, when the average number of homicides in Durham was 1.8 annual- ly. In the 1980s police probed 3.8 mur- ders per year, and five in the 1990s. Also of concern to police is an in- crease in traffic fatalities. Last year 33 people were killed in collisions on Durham roads, up from 26 in 1999. Another 17 died in region crashes in- vestigated by Whitby OPP. Cases involving criminal negli- gence, almost all relating to motor ve- hicle collisions jumped from 11 in 1999 to 29 in 2000. The number of impaired drivers on local roadways went up 10 per cent from 3,104 in 1999 to 3,418 in 2000. The most dramatic increase in drinking and driving occurred in North Durham, where police report a 60-per cent rise. On the bright side the number of robberies dipped 2.4 per cent to 281. Although there were just two bank holdups, compared to 30 in 1999, the decrease was offset by a rise in street muggings and convenience store heists. In total there were 5,869 crimes against persons in 2000. Other good news included a drop in property crimes such as break-and-en- ters (down 7.6 per cent) and auto thefts (down 13.5 per cent). Durham boasted a 40 per cent over- all clearance rate (cases solved), four- per cent higher than the Ontario aver- age, Supt. Mercier said. When it comes to violent crime the force cleared 83 per cent of cases, above the provincial average of 77 per cent. Of 104 homicides in Durham since 1975, six remain unsolved. Editorial &OPINIONS news advertiser March 9, 2001 Canadian farmers in need of our support To the editor: Canadian farming is a long- term operation that can’t be turned on and off like a light switch. As you enjoy your next ham- burger or steak, ponder the thought that the beef farmer owned and fed the animal for up to 30 months from conception until the beef reached your plate. Perhaps you prefer a pork chop that would take approxi- mately 11 months to reach your plate. Do you need milk or cream for your coffee? Well, if the dairy farmer needs a replacement cow it will take 38 to 42 months to bring it into production. As you think about these facts, some- where in Canada a farmer is probably trying to think of a plan to avoid bankruptcy and another farmer is contemplating retire- ment. I wonder what the formula is to get a replacement farmer? With the current economic cli- mate in agriculture in Canada, it will be extremely hard for a young farmer to prepare a finan- cial plan that any banker would approve so a new farming opera- tion could be started. Agriculture in Canada needs the support of our federal and provincial governments in order to continue supplying the quality products that our population re- quires. Any infusion of cash by gov- ernments into agriculture is an investment that creates major spinoffs in the economy, as most farmers who have money spend it on keeping their farm business operation functioning. I believe that if agriculture is doing well in a country, then the economy will also be in good shape. The Canadian farmer’s magic hat is now empty. Without support from the rest of the Canadian people we will soon have to rely on food from other countries, no matter what the quality. In closing, I would like to say I am a fourth-generation Canadi- an farmer and with the present state of agriculture in Canada will probably be the last one in my family. Edward Beach, Executive committee member Durham Region Federation of Agriculture EDITORIAL LETTERS TO THE EDITOR So, are you connected yet? No e- mail address? What’s the matter with you? Don’t you realize the whole w.w.world is in on this new wonder ex- cept you? If you’re not, I wouldn’t blame you for certainly feeling that way if half the television and radio ads are anything to go by. Frankly, I have a hard time un- derstanding most of these www dot cryptic messages and sometimes be- lieve there is a secret vocabulary that only computer geeks can decipher. Am I ready? Apparently not. The Internet has opened many av- enues and the world is becoming a much smaller place due to this com- paratively new phenomenon. Now let me hold my hand up at this point in time and admit that yes, we are ‘connected’ in our happy house- hold and we use our mailbox every day to keep in touch with family and friends. When I don’t have the time to sit and chat for half an hour on the tele- phone, I can send a quick note or e- card in seconds and still get brownie points. I can check for movie listings, renew my library books, do my bank- ing, and hey, even write this column, all from the comfort of my spare bed- room and at the click of my faithful mouse. There can, of course, be a downside. While we use our newfound skills for a period of probably an aver- age of a half-hour to 45 minutes per day, I believe there are many ‘clickers’ out there who use this as a new form of entertainment, spending hours upon hours wading through layers of infor- mation. Yes, the Internet goes deep and can be hypnotic. One day, even I found myself with teary eyes and a crick in my neck due to spending an unfore- seen two solid hours searching for something I now forget. When I was a young girl, television was the evil device to keep children away from. Although this has not changed a great deal due to much more violent and inappropriate programs, at least back in my day television was a family or social occasion with every- one watching the same show and viewing could be monitored accord- ingly. Nowadays the computer screen is fast becoming the new entertainment. This can be a great research tool, and yes, even an enjoyable recreational pastime. However, parents should be aware while Johnny isn’t out doing goodness-knows-what at 11 p.m. at night, they should know who Johnny is talking to or viewing on the screen. So far, I have managed to learn how to open and send my mail and do the odd research here and there. Computer geek I am not. Now, how do I send this attachment again? Internet not e-xactly for everyone Confessions of a computer geek in training E-mail your comments on this opin- ion to steve.houston@durhamnews.net. Linda Sim Opinion Shaper It was a bit of bad news, followed by more bad news, topped off by, well, some really bad news. The latest annual crime statistics provided by Durham Regional Police offer a miserable picture of 2000. Just about every crime, especially those in- volving violence, was up significantly during the year. In a year when the horrifying Hadley murder-suicide dominated Durham news in June, the numbers show violent crime up a staggering 15.9 per cent in Durham. As Chief Kevin McAlpine said in analysing the numbers, “A significant portion of that 15 per cent of violent crime is family related; domestic related. A lot of these are acts that are not random, they are incidents perpetrated by people who are purported to love each other.” We all remember the attack on Gillian Hadley at her Pickering home by her estranged husband Ralph. De- spite a peace bond ordering him to re- frain from contact with Gillian, Ralph broke into her home, dragged her in broad daylight back inside -- she was able to hand off her infant child to a stranger for safety -- and murdered her before turning the gun on himself. As atypical as that crime was, it was indicative of a disturbing Durham trend in 2000. The use of guns in- creased 48.9 per cent from 1999. Sex- ual assaults are up 23.2 per cent while assaults are up 10.7 per cent. These numbers are far out of whack with the population growth in Durham. The re- gion grew by three per cent last year. While the numbers are disturbing to be sure, Chuck Mercier, superinten- dent of crime management, offers a plausible explanation for some of the statistics. Supt. Mercier attributes the large jump to new professional protocols that see improved education and in- creased public awareness of domestic violence and child abuse. In other words, women and children are less willing to take it and more willing to report it now than they’ve ever been. And that increases the numbers. Drinking and driving was up 10 per cent last year and the numbers are par- ticularly upsetting in north Durham where there has been a 60 per cent in- crease. The message that drinking and driving kills must continue to be ham- mered home to stem the road carnage we see around us. The force hopes to bring 47 new of- ficers on board this year and the chief has been instrumental in pushing for more community policing which can only help -- we hope -- to curb the crime tidal wave. Let’s hope 2001 will be a better and safer year for us all. Crime stats represent truly distressing sign Violence in Durham way up in 2000, especially in domestic-related cases E-mail your comments on this opinion to steve.houston@durhamnews.net. The pregnancy quiz was developed by the department’s ‘Healthy Babies/Healthy Chil- dren’ program and community members to help identify pregnancy risk factors. The quiz highlights several topics such as good nutrition, avoiding tobacco, alcohol and drugs, and getting enough folic acid. It also provides opportunities for expectant moth- ers to speak to a public health nurse. Everyone who returns a completed quiz is eligible to win free attendance at a prena- tal class series. One draw will be held each month and the winner will have a choice as to where they will attend classes: Lakeridge Health Oshawa or the Ajax and Pickering Health Centre. Quizzes are available throughout Durham at doctor’s offices, clinics, hospitals, phar- macies, libraries and other community agen- cies. To obtain a copy or for more prenatal in- formation, call the Durham health connec- tion line at (905) 723-8521 or 1 800 841- 2729, ext. 2158. He wrote a note back letting his southern neighbours know he found the balloon. BY SARAH MITCHELL Special to the News Advertiser Who would have thought one bal- loon could travel all the way from Mississippi? Pickering resident Kevin Conway may have been skeptical at first, but an unexpected visitor from 2,200 kilometres away has proven him wrong. While walking his dog down at the Ajax lakefront on Sunday, Feb. 25, Mr. Conway discovered a helium- filled balloon with a small note con- taining the name and number of a church in Amory, Miss. and a request to send a letter when found. “I think it’s cool!” was Mr. Con- way’s reaction to his find. “It comes across five states and for some reason the good Lord puts it into my hands.” The balloon was released Feb. 22 from the First Baptist Church in Mis- sissippi on behalf of three partici- pants of the church’s Alzheimer’s disease day-care program. Mr. Con- way’s find was released for Hazel Young. “That particular balloon got stuck in a tree across the street from where we released it, and we thought it was stuck there, but the next morning, it was gone,” Maryneil Doris, one of the volunteers at the day care recalled in a recent phone interview. Mr. Conway wasn’t the only one impressed by the long-distance trav- eller. His mother Irene was also amazed. “I think it’s just fantastic that a he- lium-filled balloon could come this far,” she said. “The wind must have been in this direction for it to last so long.” Six days of fun lie ahead at The Youth Centre The Youth Centre is offering a number of activities over the March break. Kicking off the break today (Fri- day) from 1 to 4 p.m. is a games drop-in where youth can come surf the Internet, test their Nintendo 64 skills, play ping-pong or just hang out. The fun wraps up Friday, March 16 with a heart-saver ‘A’CPR course. The cost of the course is $10. The activities are open to Ajax and Pickering youth 13 to 19 years old and events (except rock climbing) are at The Youth Centre, 360 Bayly St. W., in Ajax. After several days of argu- ments into whether an injunc- tion should be imposed on the locked-out workers to prohibit them from ‘blockad- ing’the steel mill, a court de- cided to put off the hearing until March 12. During this time Lasco has agreed not to attempt to bus in replacement workers. In return, the union agreed to limit delays to traffic entering and leaving the plant to a maximum 20 minutes. The decision came as a re- lief to United Steelworkers of America - Local 6571 union president Denis Kavanagh who was named as one of six defendants in the injunction. In addition, the union was facing a $75-million lawsuit filed by Lasco for economic damages. “Now we can resume talks in good faith,” Mr. Kavanagh said yesterday. “With the threat of scabs hanging over our heads, there was no way we could negotiate.” In the last two weeks LASCO has hired an unspec- ified number of replacement workers but hasn’t yet tried to transport them through the picket line. The union was also facing an attempt by five of its own members to return to work. On Wednesday af- ternoon, and again the next morning, their Yukon truck was turned away after being stopped at the gates for sever- al hours. Durham Regional Police labour liaison officer Sgt. Jim Grimley testified in court that on both occasions he advised the workers on the picket line that their action was unlaw- ful. Asked how locked-out workers could be permitted to return to work, Lasco head negotiator and plant manager Bernie Lewis declined to comment except to say the details “will come out in court.” Steel plant management, union workers cut temporary deal A/P PAGE 10 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, March 9, 2001 TWO DAY SALE! “SATURDAY & SUNDAY ONLY” 1650 BAYLY ST. NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY EDITION, March 9, 2001 PAGE 13 A/P AJAX —Playground space at a Pickering Village apartment could be re- moved to make way for more parking spots. Of the 14 spots to be created at the Tiffany Apartment at 67 Kingston Rd. S., eight will be along the eastern property line, which is at the rear of the building, and six will be near the driveway entrance. Ajax council will con- sider the matter when it meets March 26. Council’s Community Affairs and Planning Committee ap- proved on Monday remov- ing the playground because there’s a severe shortage of parking spots at the build- ing. “It’s a trade-off of more parking or a play space,” Town planner Renrick Ashby told the committee. In his written report, Mr. Ashby noted planning staff is usually reluctant to re- move a playground, but he said most residents in the building want the extra parking. Ted Gauder, a resident in the apartment since 1972, told the committee, “For us in the building, the parking is terrible. We need parking very much.” One of Mr. Ashby’s rec- ommendations was that the building owner, Paul Mar- siglio, contribute $7,500 to the Town’s park reserve fund. Mr. Ashby noted the owner agrees to giving money, but not $7,500. The amount is what it would cost the Town to replace the playground equipment in a nearby location. He added there’s a lack of playground space in the area bounded to the west by Church Street and south of Kingston Road. He called the amount a “modest contribution” to replacing the equipment. Bryce Jordan, a planner representing the building owner, said putting in the parking spots and correct- ing a drainage problem will cost about $10,000. “It (the $7,500) has been characterized as a modest contribution. The work is $10,000 and the contribu- tion isn’t modest based on the cost of the project,” Mr. Jordan said. “We ask that you waive the fee.” A/P PAGE 14 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, March 9, 2001 Swings may be swapped for parking spaces at Ajax apartment We’ve Got Your Size Sizes 4-15 Widths AA-EEE PICKERING TOWN CENTRE • UPPER LEVEL • SEARS WING INVENTORY SALE $15 OFF Doctors claim walking is the BEST exercise you can do. We had ten openings for the summer and were overwhelmed when almost 100 teenagers lined up for interviews. Sherry and I interviewed every one of them and we would have liked to hire them all. Sherry and I have always been impressed with the high quality of the kids who live in this area and this day was no exception. We were only able to narrow it down to 34 outstanding applicants for a ten positions. I then called Richard who manages the Wendy’s here in Pickering and John the manager of Burger King and they both agreed to accept the resumes of the balance of these applicants. Many thanks to both of these men for giving these kids at least a second change for the interview. There is no guarantee that they will get the job but they will be willing to help. I have always insisted that competition benefits you the consumer the most. But it doesn’t mean that we can’t work together to provide jobs for the teenagers of Pickering. These men are a prime example of that co-operation and please thank them or leave a message for them the next time you pay a visit to their stores. DONATION TO SICK KIDS ON VALENTINE DAY As you know our next door neighbour’s 12 year old daughter is battling leukemia and being treated at Sick Kids. The hospital is a wonderful facility for kids and needs our support. In honour of Nerissa Bungaroo we made a pledge to donate 1.00 for every cake sold from the Friday to Valentine’s Day. We sold over 300 cakes. Last year we sold 150 cakes at this same time and we want to thank our customers from the bottom of our hearts for the great support they gave us on this project. We will forward a cheque for 320.00 to Sick Kids in honour of Narissa and the great work done at the hospital. OUR THREE NEW BLIZZARDS: Yes we have received many calls and inquiries as to when we will introduce our new CLODHOPPER BLIZZARD as well as our new MOCHA CHIP WITH NESCAFE and the third one is going to be an instant hit with the teenagers. It’s called the GRAPE EXPLOSION. Our staff have been sampling them as we teach them how to make these three new products and they love it! The Durham association describes learning disabilities as a lifelong communication disorder that causes difficulties in acquiring oral lan- guage, reading, writing, mathematics and organizational skills. The Learning Disabilities Associa- tion of Durham works with the regin’s two school boards and other community agencies to improve ser- vices and supports for people with learning disabilities. Much of the as- sociation’s work is carried out by vol- unteers. For more information about the campaign, or to place an order for flowers, call Maureen Pryce at 839- 2779. Eat your spinach, flex your mus- cles and pull for kids. The Lung Association, Durham Area, is hosting its 1st annual Pull for Kids, a pilot event to raise funds for childhood asthma research. Teams of eight will compete against each other as they pull a pumper truck across a pre-deter- mined distance tug-of-war style. Kids can sign up for the Kids Mini Pull. It all takes place on Saturday, March 24, at the Oshawa Civic Audi- torium. Asthma is the No. 1 reason chil- dren are hospitalized in Canada. You can help to change this statistic by rounding up a team of co-workers, friends and/or relatives for this chal- lenge. You ’d be there for them all the time if you could, but that’s not possible. You have to go to work or on vacation and your pet has to stay home. But the good news is it doesn’t have to be lonely. Melanie Hancock is the owner of Pet Playcare, a service that treats your pets asVIP’s, Very Important Pets. She provides your pet with daily exercise, taking it for a 30 to 40 minute walk and when possible have it socialize with other pets. “Its more than just a walk,” says Melanie. “It’s a high energize time when the pet can develop its social skills and at the same time get exercise. It makes for a more content and happier pet. One that is more playful and less aggressive when at home. Melanie also provides a pet sitting service if you go on vacation or business trips. The pet stays in your home where it feels most comfortable and receives 3 to 4 visits per day for feedings and walks. “We match our routine with the pet’s routine and it stays in its own home, sleeps in its own bed and eats its usual food,” says Melanie. While in their care your pet can be taken to veterinarian or grooming appointments. As part of the pet sitting service, Melanie will also pick up your mail and newspapers, alternate your lighting and do other things to ensure your home has that lived-in look. “People should know that their insurance companies require your home to be checked every three days if you’re away.” says Melanie. Pet Playcare is insured and bonded, providing clients with peace of mind and the added security of knowing your pet and home are in good hands. Pet Playcare is a member of Pet Sitters International (PSI), the largest international organization for professional pet sitters. For more information about Pet Playcare call (905) 837-8853. In the final game, the Valley Farm Colts matched up against R.H. Cornish Public School from Port Perry. The Colts started slow- ly, trailing by nine points at the half. Valley Farm, however, changed its defensive strategy in the second half to win 33-23. The victory gave the school its first-ever intermediate boys’ bas- ketball regional title, placing first out of 101 schools in Durham Re- gion. The Colts finished the season with a perfect 34-0 record. Valley Farm defeated teams from Hillsdale Public School in Oshawa, Maple Ridge Public School in Pickering and West Lynde Public School in Whitby to get to the championship game. The Colts took part in the DEAA Area 7 finals in mid-Febru- ary and made it to the final of the Pickering-area school meet. The Colts met Sir John A. Macdonald Public School in the final and in a close game, emerged victorious for the Area 7 title and number-one seed for the Durham champi- onships. The Colts competed in two tournaments this season, winning both titles. At the 48-team, Rick Petty-John event,Valley Farm won the championship after defeating Cornish. At the Ormiston Invitational Basketball Tournament in Whitby, the Colts defeated Cornish in the semifinal and Highbush Public School of Pickering in the champi- onship match. Team members are Stephen Lopez, Fabian Samuel, Anthony Lue, Kyle Donnan, Omar Qayou- mi, Richardo Cole, Gavin Sat- narain, Zawar Khan,Aaron Morris, Astanth Rajanathan and Kenny McBride. Sport SHORTS MARCH 9, 2001 Eclipse earns draw during indoor soccer action The Ajax Eclipse under 12 girls’ indoor rep soccer team earned a 2-2 tie against a tough East York team during recent league play at the Downsview Hanger. East York opened the scoring during North York Hearts Indoor Soc- cer League action on a corner kick, but the Eclipse answered back when Latoya Smith scored on a beautifully executed free kick. Ajax took the lead in the second half after Pam Ogle and Smith worked a beautiful give and go to beat the East York goaltender. With time running down East York was pressing hard to tie the game, when an Eclipse defender at- tempting to clear the ball accidental- ly headed it into her own net. Playing a strong game in net for the Eclipse was Jessica Dolhan. Panthers add win, tie to bring post-season mark to 3-1-3 PICKERING —The Pickering Panthers TACC Construction major bantam ‘A’ rep hockey team contin- ued its strong play in the second round of the Lakeshore League OMHA playdowns with a win and a tie in recent action. In what was arguably the team’s finest game of the season, the Pan- thers skated to a 3-2 victory over Trenton. Trenton opened the scoring early in the first period and the one-goal lead held up until the early going of the third period when Pickering scored the tying goal. A point shot by Ryan Rogatinsky found the top corner of the net. Trenton replied quickly to regain the lead, which they held until three minutes remained in the frame. Pickering’s Colin Campbell con- verted a pass to tie the game. Robert Bayley and Giancarlo Domin- go assisted on the goal. Trenton continued to pressure the Pickering defence, but goal- tender Kenny Saunders was equal to the task. With a minute remaining, the Panthers’ Craig Burrell won the draw to Campbell, who fed a pass to Domingo, who one-timed a shot with less than a second on the clock for the winning marker. In the next game against Lind- say, the lead changed hands several times before the two sides settled for a 5-5 draw. Matt Yarmoluk scored a pair of goals, while Paul Jefferies, Sean Dubeau and Troy Carpenter added single markers. Assists went to Bill Keith and Dubeau each with two, and Yarmoluk, Jefferies, Burrell and Rogatinsky. Pickering’s record in the playoff series stands at 3-1-3. Durham Region, which represents about 1/60th of the country’s population, will account for more than half the talent on Canada’s women’s entry at the World Cup field lacrosse championships in England this summer. Ten of the 18 players selected to the national team hail from Durham — four from Whitby, three from Brooklin, two from Oshawa and one from Pickering. Brooklin’s Jennifer Johnson is ex- pected to lead the Canadian contingent. The 24-year-old Anderson Collegiate grad was a three-time all-American while at Penn State University and is now an assistant coach at Cornell Uni- versity. “It’s a great opportunity to go to a place such as England and represent your country,” said Johnson, who is re- covering from October foot surgery but should be at full speed for the July 7 to 14 tournament. “It’s just an awesome feeling.” Along with Oshawa’s Carolyn Toll, Whitby’s Troyhann Santos and Picker- ing’s Audrey Kelly, Johnson has played the past 11 years for an Ontario elite team coached by Donevan Collegiate teacher Barb Boyes. Both Toll and Johnson give credit in part to the strong local high school pro- gram they had while growing up — a program that has since died out — for the national team’s local flavour. And both agree a medal is well with- in grasp. “I think this is going to be the best team Canada has sent so far,” said Johnson. “We’re definitely going to con- tend for a medal.” Canada, which finished a disappoint- ing fifth in Japan in 1997, will be bat- tling for medals with the heavily- favoured United States, Australia and England. “We are going to come home with a medal,” said a confident Toll, 27. “We have an excellent team this year.” Toll, the wife of Steve Toll from the Brooklin Redmen and Toronto Rock, is a graduate of Donevan Collegiate and the University of Western Ontario. “Considering lacrosse is such a big part of my life, it’s great to be competi- tive at this age,” she said. “I like to fulfil athletic challenges.” Other local players on the team are Jessica Williams, Jessica Brownridge and Lynz Keys of Whitby, Tami Jones and Sarah McGoey of Brooklin and Vessy Mochikas of Oshawa. The majority of the players on the Canadian team played under the name Proboss and finished second at the pres- tigious Vail Shootout tournament in Col- orado last year. NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, March 9, 2001 PAGE 31 A/P AJAX —The Ajax Knights tyke ‘Red’ select hockey team ended a spirited playoff series with the Uxbridge Bruins by winning the third and final game on home ice recent- ly. The two teams battled hard throughout in an exciting display of hockey. In the end, the Ajax tykes hung on for a 3-2 victory to move on in the playoff hunt. After a scoreless period, the Knights did all their scoring in the second to open up a 3- 0 lead. Uxbridge, however, scored two third- period markers to make it close. Dakota Marsham started the scoring for Ajax by banging in a loose puck. With time running out in the frame, Christian Kirk scored, with assists to Michael Schlink and Cale Grundy. Moments later, Jake Bannister scored what proved to be the game-winning goal from Kirk and Schlink. In Game 2 of the series in Uxbridge, the Ajacians pulled out a 2-1 victory. The game winner was scored off the stick of Adam Valadao with 1:24 remaining in the game. Jordan Minos drew an assist. Kirk opened the scoring for Ajax on a penalty shot. The Ajax defence played a pivotal role in the contest. Ajax lost the series opener to Uxbridge by a 4-0 score. The Bruins completely smothered the Knights’ offence, while find- ing holes in the defence to post the thorough victory.
