It was the race to watch in Durham and Thursday night, it ended with a bang as Liberal candidate Wayne Arthurs edged out Minister of Finance Janet Ecker by 1,011 votes. Mr. Arthurs earned 24,969, with Ms. Ecker following close behind with 23,958 votes for the Progressive Conservatives. New Democratic Party (NDP)candi- date Vern Edwards took 3,690 votes, while Adam Duncan of the Green Party earned 1,947. Toasting “a new Ontario,” Mr. Arthurs called the Pickering- Ajax-Uxbridge riding “one of the building blocks” in forming a new foundation for the province. “The people of this riding have sent a huge message about the policies of the former gov- ernment,” he said in his victory speech. “We can and we will build a better Ontario, for all Ontario.” Mr. Arthurs joins a team of 72 Liberals across Ontario. The Tories were left with 24 seats and the NDP claimed seven in the 103-seat legislature. Ms. Ecker, displayed little re- action to her defeat when she entered the Irish Times Pub on Bayly Street in Pickering like a champion. Guarded by security and hounded by cameras, mi- crophones, and tape recorders, she walked through the crowd of ‘Re-elect Janet Ecker’ signs and on to the stage to the song ‘Simply The Best.’ “I want all of my volunteers here to know none of this was for any lack of work,” she said. “You guys were the hardest- working team in the province.” She congratulated her com- petitors and her party col- leagues who were elected and sympathized with fellow Tories who lost. “It’s not easy, but they don’t call this a blood sport for noth- ing,” said Ms. Ecker to her grief- struck audience. “It won’t be the same without you Janet,” a woman yelled Wayne Arthurs greets supporters in Pickering Thursday night celebrating his victory in the Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge Riding. Officials call for full investigation BByy LLeesslleeyy BBoovviiee Staff Writer PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG — The City is calling for a full investigation into why it wasn’t informed of an oil spill at Cherry- wood Transformer Station until hours afterwards. A transformer ruptured early Wednesday morning at the station near Dixie Road and Third Conces- sion, spewing 39,000 gallons of miner- al oil, the equivalent of two tanker trucks. About 20 per cent of the oil - rough- ly 8,000 gallons - could not be con- tained at the Hydro One station and seeped into a storm sewer and into nearby Pine Creek. While the oil is not considered dangerous to human beings, it is still unknown what effect it will have on the environment and if any flowed downstream into French- man’s Bay. Even a small amount of PCBs could have an effect on small aquatic organisms, said Professor Nick Eyles, a researcher with the University of To ronto, who has conducted several studies of Frenchman’s Bay. “If it gets into small aquatic organ- isms, it can get into the food chain as larger organisms eat the smaller ones,” he said. “This is a major event.” Hydro One said the transformer ruptured at 5:48 a.m., triggering a low oil alarm at around 6:09 a.m. City officials are upset they weren’t notified until after 9 a.m. and the Ministry of Environment (MOE) at 9:20 a.m. “We could have had the appropri- ate booms in place to back up Hydro One in their containment efforts,” said Mayor Wayne Arthurs. “They should have picked up the phone ear- lier.” But, Hydro One said they handled the situation according to their emergency guidelines. “We have established protocols,” explained Hydro One spokesman Anne Creighton. “Because it oc- curred on our site, it’s our responsi- bility to first try and contain it. If we come to the conclusion it’s moving offsite, then we notify other authori- ties. It became apparent at around 9:30 a.m. we would not be able to con- tain the spill.” That wasn’t good enough for City officials, who argued there is a Durham emergency measures plan in place for such circumstances and immediate notification is key. It took until 1 p.m. for both Picker- ing and Durham Region to learn there were only two parts per million polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the mineral oil. Contamination level is considered 50 parts per million. “The problem is Durham’s Emer- gency Measures Office is not getting the full information to make a judge- ment call,” said Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner. “If there were PCBs, we would have needed to start an evacuation (of homes just south of the station). Schools in the area were asked to send home a letter with students, warning children and residents to stay away from the creek during the clean up. Andrea Pidwerbecki, the Durham District School Board’s communications manager, said the board sent a letter to all Pickering school principals before the end of the day Wednesday. Staff at William Dunbar, Bayview Heights and Sir John A. Macdonald public schools was directed to send it home to parents through students. It partially states, “We have asked everyone to stay away from Pine Creek until the spill has been cleaned up and any possible effects are made clear by authorities.” At other public schools, it was up to principals to decide if the letter would go home. The closest school to the creek is Vaughan Willard Public School, adja- cent to Pine Creek Park. Ms. Pidwer- becki said at the end of school on Wednesday, extra staff was on hand as students left the property to “en- courage them to take another route and stay clear of the creek” rather than walking through the park. The Durham Catholic District School Board took the lead from the health department. About 50 absorbent booms were placed in the creek in an effort to soak up the spill and a dike set up at Radom Street to prevent the oil from entering Frenchman’s Bay. Crews from Hydro One, Pickering and the MOE were still working Thursday to clean up the oil with “sucker trucks” but at press time, it was still undetermined if any of the contaminants had made their way into the bay. City officials reported a dead blue jay and a mouse, found covered with oil along the creek. As with any significant spill, the MOE will investigate the incident to determine how the spill occurred and if Hydro One followed the proper protocol in notifying authorities and cleaning up the oil, said ministry spokesman John Steele. It’s too early to speculate if Hydro One did or didn’t follow proper pro- cedure, he said. Officials from the federal Oceans and Fisheries De- partment were also on scene Wednesday. The Cherrywood Transformer Station is considered one of Hydro One’s largest stations and the back- bone of its east-west transmission system in Ontario. Transformer sta- tions take electricity produced at generating plants and step-up the voltage so it can be transmitted long distances. Mineral oil is used as an insulator. But, he added, “It was a very short out- age.” Unit 4 is the first of four reactors on the ‘A’ side of the plant to undergo refurbish- ment. The cost has risen more than a $1 billion over the original es- timate of $800 million. It’s also at least two years over-sched- ule. Replacing a pump seal was the reason for the reactor to be taken off line, he said. Maintenance on the turbine generator side forced Unit 5 off line, Mr. Earl noted. “We saw a piece of equipment that needed maintenance, so we fixed the pump seal,” he said. “We see it as a short-term maintenance outage, so in that sense, yes, it’s minor. “We’re doing work on equip- ment. The outage is measured in days,” he added. “Fall is a good time to do” maintenance work, he said. “In the fall, we see the lowest de- mand for electricity. That’s when it’s the best to do mainte- nance.” Unit 5 was close to full power at the time, while Unit 4 was at 90 per cent, he stated. Mr. Earl added, “There was never a safety concern.” Unit 5 went off line at about 5 a.m., with Unit 4 following be- tween 6 and 7 a.m. A/P PAGE 4 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, October 3, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Minor shutdown of Pickering reactors Surveys should be returned by Oct. 10 BByy MMiikkee RRuuttaa Staff Writer DDUURRHHAAMM — Durham’s public school board is inviting input from par- ents and ratepayers as it reviews Durham Direc- tions, the board’s strategic plan. However if you want to have your say the time is short - the deadline to complete and submit the written survey is Oct. 10. It is available at all Durham District School Board schools and at the educa- tion centre on Taunton Road in Whitby. The review also includes discussion groups for board staff, school com- munity councils and the student senate, made up of high school student leaders. Durham Direc- tions provides a focus for staff decision-making. Education director Craig Burch says the tim- ing is right. “The current plan has been in place since 1998, and between that time and this time we’ve had a lot of curriculum changes, a lot of issues have come to the surface in the community,” says Mr. Burch. While the goal is not “to re-create the wheel” but to review the existing plan, he says input so far indi- cates “people want to make changes.” He says the board’s mis- sion statement will possi- bly be amended, and he expects a focus on the en- vironment to have greater prominence in the plan it- self and at the local school level. “My guess is the envi- ronment, the care of our environment, was not one of the major directions five years ago,” Mr. Burch says, noting environmental is- sues have become more input. He used it as an exam- ple of how the plan’s focus areas have an impact at the school level. In the case of the environment, Mr. Burch says recycling initiatives may well appear in individual school plans where they did not five years ago. The short time frame for survey responses is in- tended to encourage peo- ple to take part. Roughly 7,000 surveys have been sent out, with social agen- cies, service clubs, busi- nesses and other board partners also invited to participate. “It doesn’t take more than 20 minutes to do,” says Mr. Burch. Survey respondents are asked to rate how the board “promotes quality education” in the areas of teaching and learning, life- long learning, accountabil- ity, communication and equity. There is also an area in which to suggest additions to or deletions from the next plan. Mr. Burch plans to pro- vide a preliminary report on the review to existing trustees at their last work- ing meeting on November 17. Following the municipal election, a new board of trustees is expected to ap- prove the new plan in Jan- uary. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, October 3, 2003 PAGE 5 A/P WALLPAPER CENTRE NO T AXE S MONDAY TO FRIDAY 9:30-9:00 SATURDAY 9:30-5:30 SUNDAY 12:00-4:00 1652 Bayly St. W. Breastfeeding sit-in Oct. 4 P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, October 3, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Wa yne Arthurs upsets To ry giant Janet Ecker hurt by bad publicity for Ernie Eves Wayne Arthurs hedged his political bets this fall and Thursday came up a winner in the race he really wanted to win. The erstwhile Pickering mayor, who remained on the ballot for the municipal election despite criticism, edged the second most powerful Tory in Ontario, defeating Finance Minister Janet Ecker. Mr. Arthurs was the only Liberal winner in Durham Re- gion, as Tories were re-elected in three other ridings, defying the Liberal wave. Mr. Arthurs, a seasoned campaigner and popular mayor, fought a tough, solid campaign against his opponents. Ms. Ecker was hampered by negative publicity over the decision to deliver the budget in an auto parts plant and over suspi- cions, denied by her, that the Province is carrying a multi-bil- lion-dollar deficit. Ms. Ecker earned respect under two Tory premiers, Mike Harris and Mr. Eves. She was given tough, demanding port- folios including social services, education and finance and performed well. She will be missed at Queen’s Park and in the riding. As for the rest of Ontario, clearly the Tory message of tax cuts, smaller government and targeted goodies like a private school tax cut and a tax break for seniors on the education portion of their property tax, never took off. Ernie Eves was criticized as a flip-flopping leader who was for privatizing hydro one day, keeping it public another; who was against banning teacher’s strikes while campaigning for leader, then supported a ban during the election; who tried a negative campaigning approach that badly backfired. Dalton McGuinty spent years preparing for this campaign. His ambitious platform tried to offer something for every- body. While the Liberals will struggle to implement their pro- grams, with a huge majority they’ll have several years to get organized and to deal with an anticipated multi-billion dollar deficit left by the PCs. Jokes may seem funny but words can truly injure TToo tthhee eeddiittoorr:: A week ago I was in a shop in Picker- ing Village. It was the Saturday of the Pickering Village Fall Festival. The lady behind the counter was talking to three other lady customers. She was telling the other ladies about the band that had played on the previous Friday night and about the Newfie jokes the band had told and how funny they were. She was trying to remember some Newfie' saying that was supposed to be so funny. At this point I spoke up and said that I was from Newfoundland. You should have seen the look on their faces. One of the jokes was repeated to which I replied how stupid it was. I told these ladies that "Newfies" don't mind if you laugh with them but don't laugh at them. I don't know anything about this band or where they are from. My point is that if jokes were made about any one of the many nationalities in Pickering there would be an uproar. Yet for years I have listened to stupid jokes targeting Newfoundlanders and we have had to tolerate the remarks and ridiculous jokes. What makes people think it is OK to make fun of us? Hunting season is upon us! When I visited my uncle last May he was already getting ready for his hunting trip in the fall. He proudly displayed his hunting card. I suspect if a human bar code tattoo incorporating the hunting licence were to become available, he would be the first to volunteer. As we all sat around the dinner table my uncle and his friend dis- cussed their secret fishing hole and I laughed at my uncle's expression when his friend mentioned he had taken his wife there. Now they would have to find a new one! Can you imagine, sharing something like that with his wife? The conversation shifted from amusement to firearm laws. I learned part of the application process for gun registration is for a special delivery letter to go to the spouse of an individual applying for a gun permit. I assume the purpose is to make the individual aware of their spouse's intentions. But when the deliveryman came to give the letter to my aunt, she was not home. Guess who signed for it? My uncle! The same individual apply- ing for the permit! What if this spe- cial delivery was intended for a bat- tered spouse? According to Statis- tics Canada, spousal homicides ac- counted for 47 per cent of all family homicides. Is gun-registration a joke? In one case, a gentleman sent in his firearms registration particulars prior to the deadline of December 2002 together with his cheque for $18. The cheque was cashed in less than three weeks, but as I write this article duck season is only one week away and he has still not re- ceived the registration stickers re- quired. Is another purpose of firearm legislation to ensure guns are locked up and stored properly to prevent accidental killings or in- juries? If that is the reason then this registered letter and registra- tion stickers are not going to help. Surprise visits by the OPP might! I thought gun laws were intend- ed to eliminate deaths from gang wars, drive-by shootings and armed robberies. The last time I watched 'Bugs Bunny,' I did not see Elmer Fudd robbing a convenience store or shooting innocent children with a pellet gun. To all those hunters out there, 'Be Safe Hunting Dose Wab- bits!' Oshawa resident Lorie Blundon is a busy mother who loves to write. Leading the celebration were the candi- date’s three daughters and son, who recalled watching other campaigns anxiously unfold over their father’s 21-year mu- nicipal career. “I can remember the first time he ran for mayor,” said his daughter, Elena. “But this is to- tally different. This is some- thing we’ve never experienced before.” Mr. Arthurs thanked his fam- ily and credited campaign chairman Dave Ryan for “lay- ing the groundwork” for his vic- tory by taking on Ms. Ecker himself four years ago. At Ms. Ecker’s headquarters, volun- teers and supporters watched results closely, hoping their candidate would pull out a win. As the night progressed and Mr. Arthurs’s lead grew, howev- er, some began to lose hope, shaking their heads and plead- ing for the numbers to rise until Ms. Ecker arrived. The defeated Tory was gra- cious despite her loss. “Serving as the MPP the last eight years has been one of the greatest pleasures of my life,” said Ms. Ecker. “I’m going to miss being MPP in this riding,” she added. With his win Thursday night, Mr. Arthurs is now out of the running for mayor Nov. 10, leav- ing a two-way race between Mr. Ryan, a Ward 1 city councillor and former regional councillor Doug Dickerson. “Once I’ve had a good night’s sleep and maybe a weekend away, I’m going to have much more to say about Dave Ryan,” Mr. Arthurs added. He continues to be mayor of Pickering until his MPP seat is published in the Ontario Gazette in about a week. After that, Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner will act as interim mayor until a new council is elected and sworn in. Mr. Arthurs said he wasn’t sad to leave Pickering, but there is a “bit of a melancholy” with his moving on. “But I think the City is in great hands. It’s got a great ad- ministration and I’m pleased I was able to at least leave it in good stead,” Mr. Arthurs said. Meanwhile, Mr. Edwards said he chose to run for the NDP to spread its message about the harm in privatizing public ser- vices like hydro. He hoped his party’s numbers were strong enough to form an opposition to “keep the Liberals in check.” Disappointed the electorate had fallen for Liberal rhetoric, Mr. Edwards vowed to return again to fight another day. “I’ve been an NDPer all my entire adult life,” he said. “It’s safe to say people haven’t seen the last of Vern Edwards.” ✦ Ecker from page 1 Ec ker ousted in red tide Janet Ecker spoke to her supporters and volunteers late Thursday after it became clear she had lost a close race to Liberal candidate Wayne Arthurs. Dalton McGuinty was all smiles during a visit to Durham this week and continued his upbeat ways as the Liberals claimed 72 seats during Thursday’s election. Nancy Codlin of Brooklin and Constable Mark Stone of Oshawa were honoured at the annual Mothers Against Drunk Driving Canada confer- ence last weekend in Toronto. Ms. Codlin, president of the Durham MADD chapter, was awarded the 2003 volunteer of the year for the Ontario east region. She helped found the local chapter three years ago after her niece was killed by an impaired driver. “A fter she was killed it be- came clear it was imperative (there be a local chapter),” she said. Const. Stone received the Ontario east region police offi- cer of the year award, as well as the national Terry Ryan Memorial Award for excel- lence in police services. The Oshawa resident is both the Durham chapter’s vice-president and a member of Durham Regional Police. The national award was re- named last year in memory of Terry Ryan, a Durham Region Police constable and presi- dent of the police association who was killed in May 2002 by an impaired driver. For Const. Stone his work against impaired drivers is both personal and profession- al. “I lost a very close uncle to an impaired driver,” he said. His work as a member of the Durham Regional Police Traffic Management Unit as a breath technician and colli- sion reconstructionist has shown him why the work of MADD is important. “I see first-hand the stuff that happens with impaired driving,” he said. MADD provides support for victims of impaired drivers, as well it makes people aware of the issues surrounding drink- ing and driving. Carol Ryan, Terry’s widow and a member of the local chapter, wrote the letter nom- inating Ms. Codlin on behalf of the chapter. “If you need Nancy for any- thing to do with MADD she’s there,” she said. “She helps all the victims. She has helped Residents saluted for fight against drinking and driving Durham Police Constable Mark Stone won the Terry Ryan Memorial award and Nancy Codlin, president of MADD Durham, was honoured as volunteer of the year during the MADD Ontario east volunteer awards re- cently. Although inspired to help by the death of her niece, it is the people Ms. Codlin meets that keep her going now. “Every victim of impaired driving has touched me and some of those victims I have become friends with and I find it a horrific way to make new friends,” she said. Catherine Altwel also received a community hero award at the event for her heroic actions in trying to stop an impaired driver in Durham. A.J. Cleaning expert Tara Aronson, author of Simplify Your Household and director of the Woolite Fashion Forum, says, “don’t look at it as a chore, but as a way to refresh and renew with the changing of the seasons.” She offers these tips: • Ta ke Inventory. First, go through the closet and decide what can be kept and what needs to be taken out of circulation. If you haven’t worn it in two to three years, then chances are it’s time to retire it. Feel bad throwing clothes out? There are many local charities that are in need of donations of gently used clothes. • Come Clean. Never store items unless they’ve been properly cleaned. If the label says dry clean or hand wash and the garment is simply constructed (i.e., no linings or decorative trim) you may have the option to wash it at home. Do not wash in the machine if the label says dry clean only or hand wash only. • Store It. Proper storage is important. Never hang sweaters. Placing a knitted or lightweight garment on a hanger can distort the shape of the fabric. Fold items properly to prevent wrinkling and to avoid having to press them when you take them out again next season. Try to use clear containers and make sure they are labeled. For vintage clothes, store items in archival boxes with acid free tissue to prevent damage. Use natural repellents such as cedar to discourage pests when storing. Finally, if your house is humid, it might be a good idea to invest in dehumidifying packaged products to avoid mildew. • Team Effort. Organizing doesn’t have to be a one-person job. Each member of the family should tackle their own closets. Try to make it fun, with a prize for the neatest job. • No room? If your storage space is tight, consider these tips. Bundle up bulky sweaters and wool trousers and stash them underneath the bed in a plastic or cloth zippered case. Rotate the clothes not in use to the back of the closet. Another option is to employ the help of a professional closet organizer, who knows a thing or two about maximizing space. Continued from Page 12 Dry clean or hand wash? He’ll fix it for you. Cooper walks down any street, heads turn. It doesn't matter whether the street is in his home city of Toronto or Las Vegas or Nashville, Cooper attracts atten- tion. He's signed autographs by the hundreds, been swarmed by women and dragged into bars by businessmen. Why? Because he bears an un- canny resemblance to country legend Willie Nelson. In fact, Cooper travels all over Canada and the United States perform- ing as Nelson. With his grey hair and beard, braids, sunglasses, simple black clothes and cowboy hat, Cooper looks just like Nelson. And he sounds like him too. But it wasn't until 15 years ago that he realized the sound-alike connection. "I was walking down the street and this guy met me and he said 'My God, you look like Willie Nel- son. Do you want to make $500 this Saturday?' "I said 'I'll be Wayne Newton for $500.'" Cooper took the gig, although he hadn't really sung before and didn't know any of Nelson's music. He quickly learned and must have passed the grade at the Oshawa show because he's been performing as Nelson ever since. He'll do so again at the Jubilee Pavilion in Oshawa on Oct. 17, as B and L Entertainment Produc- tions and Oshawa Central Lions Club present the Rock 'N' Coun- try All Star Legends, a show that played the Calgary Stampede this summer. Headlining along with Cooper will be Don Thompson as Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson, Kelly Vohnn as Reba McEntire and Faith Hill, Marty Edwards as Kenny Rogers and Bob Gill as Waylon Jennings. All are mem- bers of the Association of World Class Legends and Entertainers. "I work with these people and they're all so fabulous," Cooper said. "They're just a joy to work with. They're the best in the busi- ness." Cooper, who used to be a deco- rator before he became Nelson, is enjoying his fame, "It's been a real joy and I've had a lot of fun with it," he said. He's had 450 people waiting for pictures and autographs from him after playing the CNE in To ronto. He was pulled into a bar by a group of businessmen before an appearance at the Royal York in Toronto. He was swarmed by a busload of 50 women in Nashville. And he's had his picture taken with people who refuse to believe he's not who they think he is. "It's amazing. You walk down the street in Toronto and you have people following you," he said. "When I was in Nashville, it was worse because everybody's looking for a star." He said people "look so disap- pointed when you tell them the truth." But others just won't be- lieve the truth and go away think- ing they've met Nelson. Cooper's family and friends think his gig is great although they questioned it originally. "They said 'What the heck are you doing that for?' I said I wasn't making any money being me." The Oshawa show will begin at 8 p.m. at the Jubilee, in Lakeview Park. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door and are available by calling 905-404-6855 or 905- 433-8838 for credit card pay- ments or visit B and L Entertain- ment, 633 King St. E., Oshawa, or Wilson and Lee Music, 87 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa. Tremblant, Que- bec. Chris Guerrieri, the Formula Fo rd 1600 series points leader, pulled 18 other drivers around the challenging Mont Tremblant course for 15 laps. Guerrieri led from flag to flag and won not only the last round of the champi- onship, but the driver title as well. The drivers' title was even more significant as Guerrieri is only in his second year in the series, hav- ing won rookie-of-the-year hon- ours in the series last year. In winning the race, Guerrieri noted that dealing with the se- vere weather conditions was al- most as much as dealing with his fellow competitors on the track. "It was terrible out there at the beginning with all that rain. I saw Didier in my mirrors but then I decided I would concentrate on my driving and I would not look back. I only noticed later that he was not behind anymore. I had watched the Vintage cars earlier in the morning and studied their behaviour on the wet track. That helped me. "I am very proud of winning this championship, especially be- cause I did it in front of my friends and my sponsors at the SOGC (The Society of Obstetri- cians and Gynacologists of Cana- da)." Guerrieri had a perfect start, but he was closely followed by the experienced Didier Schraenen, twice champion of the series. The Mont St-Hilaire, Quebec driver stayed close to Guerrieri for the first eight laps of the race, but the water accumulation on the track took its toll, and Didier spun in corner one, dropping him back to seventh. Pincourt, Quebec's Olivier Lambert, twice winner at Trois-Rivières earlier this season, then took second place from Schraenen. At that point, Guerrieri, who was driving an almost flawless race, built a gap between himself and Lambert and comfortably cruised to the checkered flag. Lambert, rookie driver Mathieu Audette, Antoine Bessette and François Bellemare followed him in that order. Schraenen finished sixth in a very spectacular way, as he did a 360 degree-spin a few feet away from the starter's stand. Fo rtunately, he saved the car and crossed the line without any damage. Ashley Taws, running fourth before the last lap, did not show up at the finish, having spun out in corner eight. This race being the last of the season, Guerrieri confirmed his championship with the win, fin- ishing with 123 points. As for Schraenen, he once again ends up in second place, 29 points in arrears of Guerrieri. The race was tighter for third place since David Clubine and rookie-of-the-year Dan Burchill from Mitchell, On- tario had the same exact number of points, each with a win. Clu- bine will technically finish third in the points, thanks to his more nu- merous appearances on the podi- um. Pickering juniors bounced back from loss to Legionaires last Friday PPIICCKKEERRIINNGG ——The Pickering Boyer Pontiac Panthers took a step in the right direction in play- ing the host Oshawa Legionaires to a draw in junior 'A' hockey ac- tion Tuesday night. The Panthers atoned for a 4-2 loss to the same Legionaires squad at home last Friday night with a 3-3 tie in OHA Ontario Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey League action at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. And, as they've done so often this season, the Pan- thers had to come from behind to achieve the sin- gle point. Ryan Heickert scored with just more than a minute to go in the third period, putting the Legionaires up 3-2 and seemingly bagging the win- ning marker. But, with 23 seconds remaining, Phil McIlhone scored on a setup from defenceman Ryan Annesley for the late equalizer. Defenceman Bryan Hampton also earned an assist. It was McIlhone's first goal in his tier II junior hockey career. The tie lifts the Panthers (3-2-3- 0 for nine points) into sole posses- sion of fourth place in the nine- team South Conference stand- ings. Pickering sits two points be- hind Oshawa with two games in hand. Pickering head coach John Winder was pleased with the ef- fort and especially getting a single point in a game the Panthers seemed destined to lose. Unlike the previous contest against Os- hawa, the Panthers stuck with a game plan through the full 60 min- utes of play. "I think we went out there with a game plan and we did execute. Almost to a man we did what we wanted to do, although we had some letdowns here and there," explained Winder. Paul Michael Rivest and John Scrymgeour had the other Pan- thers' goals, with assists to McIl- hone, Danny Sullivan and Mike Banwell. Goaltender Jonathan Keating made 32 saves to record the tie. The Panthers host the Vaughan Vipers tonight (Friday) at the Pickering Recreation Complex. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Panthers play to draw with Oshawa Pickering driver Chris Guerrieri guides his car through extremely wet track conditions to win the final race of the season at Mont. Tremblant, Quebec, on Sun- day. The wire-to-wire victory enabled Guerrieri to win the drivers’ title in his sophomore season in the series. Checkered flag Guerrieri, middle, on the podium at Mont. After two days of round-robin play, the Pickering Power boys emerged undefeated to qualify for the Central East Soccer League (CESL) cup semifinals in Peterborough. Pickering pre- vailed 3-0 over Wexford on goals by Nathan Smith, Skylar Thomas and Tremaine Grant. In the final, the Pickering squad laid claim to the cup by edging Ajax 3-2 on goals by Darnell Par- ris, Thomas and Grant. The cup title came on the heels of Pickering's CESL East Division championship for 2003. Undefeated in league play over the 16-week season, the boys had outstanding wins over teams from Peterborough, Port Hope, Darlington, Oshawa Turul, Os- hawa Kicks, Whitby and Ajax. Dolphins keep winning on the football field Ajax-Pickering teams ground Oshawa Hawkeyes; take on Scarborough next DDUURRHHAAMM ——Ajax-Pickering Dolphins' football teams got over one major hurdle and are preparing to go to bat- tle again this Sunday, with the teams' undefeated records in the balance. All three Dolphins teams will play their old nemesis -- the Scarborough Thunder -- in games at Pickering's Kinsmen Park Sunday. The action gets under way at 9:30 a.m., with the tyke game, followed by the atom match-up at 11:30 a.m. and ending with the peewee contest, where Ajax- Pickering will face the perennial pow- erhouse and defending champion Thunder at 1:30 p.m. All three Dolphins teams remain undefeated with 7-0 records in Cen- tral Ontario Minor Football League (COMFL) after wins over the Oshawa Hawkeyes at Oshawa Civic Stadium last Sunday. The peewees prevailed 30-1 2, while the tykes rolled to a 33-0 rout over Oshawa. The atoms also won, but the score wasn't available. The Dolphins' peewees took control from the start, rolling to a 24-0 half- time lead. By the end of the first quar- ter, Ajax-Pickering was up 16-0. The defence set the tone on the first se- ries, stopping the Hawkeyes and pro- viding excellent field position for the offence. Quarterback David Priest- man ran behind the blocking of left guard Scott Blake and left tackle Jide Utomi for a three-yard opening touch- down. Later in the quarter, the Dolphins' defence once again provided the of- fence excellent field position for their second drive. Running back Jer- mayne Goodridge scampered 35 yards for the second touchdown. The first-half onslaught continued unabated in the second quarter as de- fensive back Cecil Cherrie intercepted a Hawkeyes' pass and returned the ball 45 yards for the third touchdown of the half. The backfield of Goodridge, Tris- tan Ming and Andrew Quittenton was dominant as Goodridge ran for over 15 0 yards and scored two touch- downs, while Ming and Quittenton combined for 100 yards and were in- strumental in opening holes for Goodridge to run through. The offensive line had an excellent first half and Marc Gregoire, Shawn Murphy, Tyler Harding and Andrew Smith continued to dominate the line of scrimmage in the second half. Special teams excelled as they lim- ited the Hawkeyes to little or no gain on kick-off returns. Wide receivers Alex Smeall and Mark Fedosen exe- cuted perfect blocking assignments and tight ends Shayne Pinnock and James McIntosh completed success- ful pass-and-run plays. Rookie quar- terback Andrew Lim controlled the offence in the final quarter. Meanwhile, in the tyke contest, the Dolphins' offence was ready to play from the first whistle as receiver Nick Naimool scored early in the first quar- ter on an end-around. On the next offensive series, run- ning back Denver Wright, slotback Richard Quittenton and fullback Cole Tudor drove the ball down the field into the Oshawa red zone. Quarter- back Jeff McIlravey scored the second touchdown on a keeper from the two- yard line. Running back Dillon Campbell found the end zone on an off-tackle run up the middle for a second-quar- ter major. After a scoreless third quarter, Tudor scored the final touch- down in the last quarter. The kicking team was successful on three of four convert attempts, adding another nine points to the scoreboard.
