Poppy reprieve in Pickering ‘Embarrassment’over, fund-raising campaign kicks off in libraries BY MARTIN DERBYSHIRE Staff Writer PICKERING —Poppies will be available in Pickering library branches today as the Royal Canadian Legion begins its annu- al campaign. The Pickering Library Board succumbed Wednesday night to Pickering council’s request and public pressure to rethink its con- troversial change in policy Oct. 18 that stopped the sale of pop- pies on library property. “The poppy program is the one way to repay the debt to ser- vice men and women who died and returned injured from our wars,” said Jim Corbett, president of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 606 in Pickering. “I’m happy now, but this has still been a big embarrassment to this city.” A compromise was struck be- tween library board members who thought allowing only the le- gion to solicit donations at the li- brary was unfair to other charita- ble organizations, and those feel- ing the ban on poppies was a slap in the face to all veterans. The board unanimously voted to amend its policy and allow all charitable organizations, meeting a yet-to-be compiled set of crite- ria, to solicit donations at the li- brary’s five branches. Members agreed the legion’s poppy boxes would surely meet the standards. “Things are equal now,” said City Councillor Dave Ryan, who also sits on the library board. In a letter submitted last week, the leaders urged the premier and Municipal Affairs Minister Chris Hodgson to strengthen the Province’s moraine legislation so that “future generations will inher- it rivers that are cold, clean and healthy, air that is breath- able and clean, and a greenbelt that stretches over 160 kilo- metres across the most heavily populated region in Canada.” In their letter, Coun. Bren- ner and the other environmen- talists want a permanent ban on further development on the moraine and assurances that the ban would be applied to 65 hearings currently before the Ontario Municipal Board.‘I must do what I feel... is the right thing’: Ralph Hadley BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer DURHAM —Ralph Hadley believed he had no choice but to “eliminate” his estranged wife, Gillian, to protect their 11-month- old son from a “fate worse than death”, an inquest into the couple’s murder-suicide has heard. “The law will not provide me with enough time with Chase (his baby son) to counteract Jill’s influ- ence and if I am able to save his soul, this is the only way,” he said in a haunting audio-taped “last will and testament” prior to the deaths June 20, 2000. A 37-year-old employee was work- ing in the preparation area at the 1450 Kingston Rd. location just after mid- night Tuesday, when a suspect entered through the back door and put a gun to his head, demanding money. The victim took the suspect to the cash drawer and handed over cash. A second employee heard the noise and confronted the sus- pect who then pointed the gun at him, demanding the safe be opened. When the employee explained he didn’t have the key, the suspect fled on foot through the rear door and was last seen heading west. The suspect is described as a 25- year-old black male, 5-foot-9, 165 pounds, and wearing a mask and grey- hooded jacket. Police are also investigat- ing an armed attack that occurred at the same store a few days earlier. On Oct. 19, a shirtless black man covered in tattoos and armed with a knife, entered the restaurant around 8:50 p.m. He slashed a 17-year-old boy and grabbed another man by the throat, flipped over tables and chairs while swearing and fled before police arrived. The boy suffered minor injuries. Anyone with information about ei- ther incident is asked to call Durham Re- gional Police at 905-683-9100 or Crime Stoppers at 905-436-8477. The fact that I must resort to such drastic mea- sures sickens me more than anyone will ever know, but I must do what I feel in my heart is the right thing,” the 34- year-old postal worker said. Mr. Hadley was under court- imposed bail con- ditions to stay away from Mrs. Hadley when he broke into her Hillcrest Road residence in Pick- ering and sur- prised her early June 20. The 35- year-old mother of three ran naked into the street screaming but was dragged back inside the resi- dence by her gun- toting estranged spouse. Neigh- bours tried des- perately to rescue Mrs. Hadley but could only watch in horror as Mr. Hadley slammed the door. Mrs. Hadley was killed in the foyer with a sin- gle gunshot to the head. Mr. Hadley then went to a bedroom and shot himself in the head, court heard. The coroner’s inquest, headed by Dr. Bonita Porter, is examin- ing the circum- stances of their deaths in the hope the five-person jury panel will propose recom- mendations aimed at prevent- ing future such tragedies. Court heard the couple’s mar- riage fell apart when Mr. Hadley was charged in early 1999 with criminal negli- gence causing bodily harm after bruises were found on Mrs. Hadley’s disabled son, whom she had during her previous mar- riage. Mr. Hadley signed a peace bond requiring him to keep the peace and have no contact with step- son Mikey, who went to live with his biological fa- ther. The breaking point came Jan. 7, 2000 when Mrs. Hadley’s sister told Mr. Hadley his wife was having a secret affair. With this information, Mr. Hadley went to an Ajax resi- dence to confront Mrs. Hadley and found her in bed with her boyfriend, court heard. After he caught her cheating, Mr. Hadley slapped Mrs. Hadley across the face and slammed her head against a wall. She filed a complaint and Mr. Hadley was charged with assault and breach of recognizance (the peace bond). He broke the terms and on Feb. 24, 2000 was charged with criminal ha- rassment, breach of undertaking and breach of recognizance. MyTV, a proposed new local television service in the areas around Toronto, including Burlington, Mississauga, Aurora, Newmarket, Markham, Ajax, Pickering and Oshawa, offers MORE local, community-based programming; MORE community news from your area; MORE family-friendly programs; MORE children’s programming; and MORE sports coverage. With more than 58.5 hours of dedicated regional and community-based programming, MyTV builds on the success of CTV’s CFTO, to reach into your neighbourhood, giving you programs that reflect the community where you live. Our research shows that people in your community are interested in additional local news and information programming and for family-viewing television, including a Saturday night family movie. And, as your number-one local station CFTO can attest, CTV knows how to deliver. At CTV, we understand that local news is important, and MyTV expands on CFTO’s coverage to deliver two thirty-minute newscasts on weekdays in non-traditional time periods (7 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.). This means more opportunities to hear about what is happening in your community, with reports about your town politics, municipal services, school systems, business economy and recreation programs. CFTO has steadfastly served high-quality programming to communities for more than 40 years. Now, we’re asking your permission for MyTV to be your neighbour. However, he didn’t mention Ontario’s most obvious terrorist targets — the nuclear reactors at Pickering, Darlington, and Bruce, along with the Chalk River nuclear laboratories. Terrorists don’t need nuclear bombs if they can cause a meltdown at a nuclear plant. One expert estimated 80,000 fatalities could result in the worst case from a radia- tion release over Toronto. Radiation expo- sure would cause cancer years later, and pass genetic damage on to our children. Huge areas in southern Ontario would have to be abandoned for hundreds of years. Darlington and the two Bruce stations each have four adjacent reactors and Picker- ing has eight. This not only makes them big- ger, easier targets for airborne attack, but in- creases the risk, because multi-unit stations share safety systems. No nuclear site in Ontario is currently able to withstand an airborne suicide attack by a jumbo-jet. Reactor and auxiliary build- ings must be “hardened” and anti-aircraft defence is needed. Ontario must also reform its nuclear emergency plan: expand evacua- tion zones, install sirens, improve public ed- ucation, and pre-distribute potassium iodide pills (if taken before exposure, these pills block absorption of radioactive iodine, which caused a thyroid cancer epidemic in Chernobyl). We need real action from Premier Harris, not just words. All nuclear power plants should be shut down during the current fall period of low electricity demand, while changes are made. After Sept. 11, we can no longer afford to underestimate the risk posed by nuclear power. David H. Editorial &OPINIONS PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER OCTOBER 26, 2001 Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com It’s hardly asking too much for the federal government to con- tribute one-third of the funds for a transit solution for the Greater Toronto Area. Considering the incredible political support the Liberals have received these past three elections from the 4.5 million people living in the GTA, a little help would go a long way. But the early signs coming from Whitby-Ajax MP Judi Long- field and Transport Minister David Collenette are grim. Mr. Col- lenette, the prime minister’s point man in greater Toronto and MP for Don Valley East, refused to commit the feds to an ambitious but needed 10-year, $9-billion transit plan for the GTA. Designed much like the vaunted federal-provincial-municipal infrastruc- ture program of 1993 Liberal Red Book fame, the transit plan would require $3 billion each from the municipalities/regions, the Province and the feds. Mr. Collenette, who has been the beneficiary of a red tidal wave from this region election after election, seems oblivious to the ongoing transit needs of the GTA. As highways continue to clog up, as the region grows and the need for more municipal buses, GO trains and buses, and subway lines accelerates, we simply can’t stand still. The minister should note the GTA, Canada’s economic en- gine, is also the fastest-growing, most dynamic district in the na- tion. The only way to keep the area efficient, to ensure further economic growth and draw businesses here, is to improve our transit options. Playing political games will not solve our current problems. Those closest to the issue — municipal leaders and MPPs — are convinced the $9-billion plan has merit. The Association of Mu- nicipalities of Ontario and the Province, often not on the same side of issues, joined together recently to urge the feds to ante up the needed funds. However, Ms. Longfield said, “one of my prob- lems with the Province is it didn’t consult with the federal gov- ernment.” If we had to wait until all three levels of government were in complete and total agreement on every issue, virtually nothing would ever get done. The worker stuck in his car on Hwy. 401 doesn’t really care who gets the credit for fixing the transit mess. The person trying to make several connections on buses between municipalities isn’t concerned about how governments figure it all out. The worn out GO Trains and buses aren’t going to improve any time soon unless funding comes down the pike. It’s time for action. The feds need to pay their ‘fare’so the sys- tem can work for us all. Time for feds to play ‘fare’ on transit Canada’s economic engine, the GTA, desperately needs cash for long-term vision “Please hold. Your call is important to us. One of our customer service representatives will be with you in a moment.” Then what? Sometimes you hear slightly-off- tune music from a radio station. There is static and noise. You eagerly await the customer service representative’s voice. Sometimes you hear a piece of music you like. Humming along, you can almost recognize the singer’s voice. You wait for the announcer to say who it is. You are actually hoping the customer service person will not answer. Just as the last notes are playing, you hear “What may I do for you?” You will never know what the song was. You could go to the music store and ask for “something that goes like this. Hm, hm, hmmm.” Maybe they will know it. One cellphone company used to leave me waiting for five to 10 min- utes. I could hang up and call later, but I didn’t want to lose my place in line. They played a style of music I found slightly annoying. Imagine my surprise when I called one day and heard, “Press 1 for in- structions on setting up your new phone. Press 2 for questions about your account. Press 3 for all other queries.” I pressed 3. “While your are wait- ing, you may select the type of music you would like to listen to. Press 1 for jazz. Press 2 for golden oldies. Press 3 for classical. Press 4 for country and western. Press 5 for new country.” My mind was so confused that I pressed 13. “While you are waiting, you may...” I hung up, losing my place in line. Worse than being left on hold with music you don’t like is being plugged into a radio news station. You hear, “Please wait for the next service rep- resentative.” Then, “severe high winds. If you don’t have to travel, police advise that you stay home. Your news and weath- er for greater...” “Hello. Thank you for waiting. How may I help you?” “Tell me, what station was just playing.” “I don’t know ma’am. They just put something on.” I don’t know whether to go home or hide in the cafeteria where it is warm. Or take the other piece of news: “found in the basement. The grisly discovery has aroused fears among residents. Police advise...” Where? Who? Oh, give me back the noisy, off- tune radio station. And hurry up! Oh, to play name that off-tune game again Automated answering services keep you guessing, looking for answers and leave you worried Caroline Davidson Opinion Shaper shouston@durhamregion.com “Ultimately we’ve done the best thing for the city and the library.” Bill Boyes, chairman of the library board following Jill Foster’s resignation after she voted against pushing poppies off library property, admitted the board made the wrong choice at its meeting last Thursday. “Yes we did (make a mistake),” he said, adding the decision was never meant to hurt veterans and now there is a level playing field for all. Regional Councillor and library board member Mark Holland, who has been vocal in his fight to get the poppies back in the library, said the right decision was made Wednesday. “The board acted and sent a strong message that the legion is welcome,” he said. “Now is the time for healing and building bridges between the city, the libraries and the le- gion.” To that end, Coun. Hol- land and City Councillor Bill McLean both said they plan on being very active in this year’s poppy cam- paign. Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner is con- vinced the national media attention this week will be good for the legion’s poppy program. “If there’s a silver lining here it’s that when you take something away from Canadians that’s when they realize its importance,” he said. “All these people have stood up to support the pro- gram and I bet it will be the best year ever for the poppy in Pickering.” Coun. However, a Durham fed- eral politician said the Province should have thought about inviting the federal government’s input prior to, not after, design- ing a plan requiring its par- ticipation in funding. “We are inviting the fed- eral government to work with us to improve public transit by signing on imme- diately to the 10-year, $9- billion transit plan an- nounced by Premier (Mike) Harris last month,” said Ontario Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Chris Hodgson, at a press confer- ence Tuesday. He was supported by AMO president Ann Mul- vale and City of Toronto’s budget committee chair- man, David Shiner. But Whitby-Ajax MP Judi Longfield responded the provincial government has made its transit plans in reverse order. “One of my problems with the Province is it did- n’t consult with the federal government. Usually there is a lot of inter-government discussion beforehand,” when an announcement in- volving different levels is made, she said. On Sept. 27, Premier Harris announced the Province would commit $3 billion to renew and expand transit. The plan requires matching contributions from Ontario municipali- ties and the federal govern- ment. Durham MPP John O’- Toole said the federal gov- ernment should have been prepared for a project pro- posal to come forward given the amount of atten- tion transit has received in the past year. “If one paid close atten- tion to the issues, it has been a very big issue,” Mr. O’Toole said. “Someone just wasn’t paying attention if they don’t think it’s been a policy debated in the last year.” Ms. Longfield suggested no one is questioning the importance of transit, just how it will be delivered. “We really need to sit down and come up with a plan government to govern- ment,” said Ms. Longfield, who noted no consultation took place between the Province and the federal government prior to last month’s announcement. “Yes, I want to see money for urban transit but we’re just not sure what ve- hicle we’re going to use, whose model we’re going to use,” she said. The MP noted there is currently a federal task force examining the issue of transit requirements. The task force is expect- ed to release a preliminary report by June 2002, with final recommendations in 2003, Ms. Longfield said. She believes federal Trans- port Minister David Col- lenette would likely consid- er the preliminary report when looking at funding any co-ordinated plan with Ontario rather than waiting for the final recommenda- tions in 2003, she said. However, Pickering resident Derek Brechin not only achieved that standard — required for earning the Duke of Edinburgh’s gold award — but he compiled an impressive 350 hours. The regimental sergeant major with the 2525 Pickering Royal Cana- dian Army Cadet Corps received the gold award, designed to help young people develop a sense of responsi- bility to themselves and their com- munity, from Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh himself, on Oct. 20 at a ceremony in Toronto. “When my mom told me I’d be getting the award I didn’t believe it,” Mr. Brechin said in an interview last Thursday, adding he was excited about meeting the prince. The 18-year-old said the majority of his work was done through his participation in the cadet program. Among his many community service pursuits, Mr. Brechin volunteered at local schools cleaning up, helped the Royal Canadian Legion with poppy days, and participated in organizing a walk for multiple sclerosis. In addition, he took part in mili- tary drill training to satisfy the skill portion of the award requirements, participates in several sports and physical training to meet the fitness portion, helped build bridges and clear new paths in Northern Ontario for the Canadian National Trails pro- gram as a part of the residential re- quirements, and met the expedition requirement by undertaking a trek from North Bay to Penetanguishene on foot, bicycle, and canoe while at- tending Blackdown Army Cadet summer training. NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY EDITION, October 26, 2001 PAGE 11 A/P Change in insurance board status could net $194,000 each year BY MARTIN DERBYSHIRE Staff Writer PICKERING —Picker- ing human resources and corporate services staff may have found over $190,000 in annual savings for the City, beginning in 2002. The savings could come from a change in the how the City pays for workers’ compensation coverage, which Pickering council ap- proved recently. Currently, Pickering is a ‘Schedule 1’ employer, pay- ing premiums to the Work- place Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) based upon a percentage of payroll ex- penses to cover pooled acci- dent costs. When the City becomes a Schedule 2 employer it will pay for individual accident costs. Despite a rise in the num- ber of serious injuries among Pickering workers in 2001, a joint corporate ser- vices and treasury and human resources depart- ment report to City council- lors showed as a Schedule 2 employer, Pickering would have seen significant sav- ings this year. Within a six-month peri- od there were five City em- ployees who sustained sig- nificant knee and back in- juries and were absent for more than eight weeks. As a Schedule 1 employ- er, the City paid $145,000 for its WSIB premiums from Jan. 1 to June 30 and expects surcharges of at least $20,000 from 2002 to 2004. In comparison, as a Schedule 2 employer, the fee for claims, up to June 30, would have been $43,486, a savings of more than $100,000. According to the report, the city’s estimated WSIB premium for 2001 is $290,000. Under Schedule 2, the premium would be re- duced to an estimated $137,000 per year, repre- senting a projected savings of $194,000. The change comes with a $7,000 trans- fer cost. However, the initial sav- ings generated will not be going back into taxpayers’ pockets just yet. Staff’s plan is to use any savings from 2002 and 2003 to create a workers’ com- pensation reserve fund, re- quired by Schedule 2 em- ployers, enabling the City to access additional funds in the event of a claim result- ing in permanent injury or death. By 2004, once the re- serve is fully funded, the savings will be transferred to departmental budgets. The plan also includes placing a more rigorous em- phasis on pro-active health and safety measures and ef- ficient disability manage- ment, to be paid for out of the savings, which staff is hoping will enable the City to minimize the frequency and severity of accidents and illnesses on the job. Mayor Wayne Arthurs spoke in favour of the move last Tuesday. “Corporate culture today puts a strong emphasis on workplace safety,” he said at a committee of the whole meeting. “We need to think outside the traditional box... workplace safety is a matter of high priority.” A/P PAGE 12 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, October 26, 2001 Pickering staff claims to have worked out savings Photographer takes you around the world at upcoming talk AJAX —An internationally-known photographer whose work has appeared in National Geographic will speak at an upcoming event in Ajax. Here’s just a small sample of how you and your local Tim Hortons are working together to keep our local kids safe. Car Seat Safety Our most precious cargo should always be secure when travelling on our highways. That’s why your local Tim Hortons in partnership with Durham Regional Police, offer nine car safety seat check clinics each year throughout Durham Region. At these free events, parents can learn if their child’s car seat is approved and is being used correctly. Headsfirst Bike helmets are the law for children under 18. To reinforce this law, Durham Regional Police, in conjunction with the Durham Health Department stop children on bikes. Kids wearing helmets receive certificates for Tim Hortons sponsored treats. Kids without helmets can attend a Tim Hortons sponsored Headsfirst educational session, where they learn about bike & helmet safety. Safety Village Learning is easier when you can practice in a safe place. Tim Hortons are proud sponsors of the The Kids' Safety Village of Durham Region. The Safety Village is a miniaturized town, run by the Durham Regional Police, where grade 1, 2 & 3 classes learn bike, traffic and personal safety. Along a fairly quiet stretch of road on the outskirts of Cambridge, you can find a small jewel in the rough. Wings of Paradise is a privately owned butterfly conservatory that fronts 117 acres of woods and meadow. Conceived as a showcase for exot- ic butterflies, as well as a venue where folks can get in touch with the environment, the facility exudes a warm, family-focused feel . Typi- cally a visit will start with the con- servatory where you can commune with some 40 species of butterflies such as the blue morpho and strik- ing owl butterflies. The tropical garden that is the backdrop for the butterflies features a cascading waterfall and meander- ing waterways. Curator John Pow- ers, who has been collecting butter- flies for more than 40 years, dreamed of such a facility, and with the help of three other business part- ners, Wings of Paradise was launched in January 2001. Public response to date has been good – as of September about 110,000 people had visited the conservatory. The conservatory itself at 10,000 square feet is con- siderable though not huge. It is well laid out and offers a pleasant mean- der. A comparison with the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls is inevitable. Un- questionably pots of money were spent on the Nia- gara Botanical Garden’s butterfly showcase and the physical structure there is impres- sive, with rolling terrain and seam- less landscaping. While Wings of Paradise is not quite on such a scale, in many ways it felt more accessible than its upscale cousin. Visits to the Par- adise are fairly ca- sual, (no timed ticket required) and one is wel- come to re-enter the conservatory as many times as one wishes. We visited on a sunny day, when the butterflies are most active. Benches are posi- tioned throughout, and we sat quietly for some time, watching the winged inhabi- tants. The conser- vatory tempera- ture ranges from 75 to 85 degrees (F), and staff recommend dressing in layers to allow for a comfortable stroll. There are a couple of com- mon sense rules, such as not touch- ing the butterflies (it damages their scales), not picking the plants, and staying out of the water. My kids loved rambling through the conser- vatory, especially walking under the waterfall. Currently, butterfly pupa are brought in from butterfly farms in Costa Rica and Malaysia. In the fu- ture, manager of marketing at Wings of Paradise, Melissa Parker, says that there are hopes of expand- ing the variety of species on display by investigating farms in the United Kingdom, or by raising butterflies in-house. After visiting the conservatory, you can enjoy a stroll along the Lightfoot Nature Trails that wind out back of the facility. At the mo- ment, all you will see are wood- lands, meadows and a naturalized butterfly garden. A short circuit will take 20 minutes or so, though there is a longer five-kilometre loop. Wings of Paradise have ambitious plans for the future. Eventually the complex will include a variety of gardens, including a rock garden, a special needs/seniors garden and a children’s garden designed to appeal to the senses. The first phase of landscape development is slated to be complete for June 2002. Wings of Paradise also has two display galleries, that showcase Powers’ personal collection of in- sect and butterfly specimins. For most kids, there’s nothing like a pe- culiar bug to capture the imagina- tion. Different special event program- ming will be featured throughout the year. For example, we visited during the annual September Monarch Migration celebration. For a few days each fall when the wind and weather are just right, thou- sands of Monarchs will set off southward from central spots like Point Pelee National Park. We did- n’t have to go all the way to Point Pelee, however, as we were able to watch as cura- tor John Powers released tagged Monarchs as they started their 4,500-km mi- gration south to the Sierra Madres Mountains of Mexico. The kids were riveted by the Monarch release. Meanwhile, Mr. Powers gave us some insight into the tagging process –– from the early Urquhart days when hand made and numbered gummed labels were applied, to the present. Allow between 45 minutes and two hours for a visit, depending on the activities offered and general in- terest. Wings of Paradise is open year round, 10:00 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily. Adults $7.50, kids 5 to 12 $4, 4 years and under free. For more in- formation call 519-653-1234. 2500 Kossuth Rd., Cambridge. Trustees at Monday’s meeting approved a new code of conduct, a require- ment of the Education Min- istry. It contains a section called roles and responsi- bilities, with headings for the board, principals, teachers and staff, students, parents, and others. Under each heading is a list of responsibilities, such as “parents shall support the values of our Catholic school system”. Board chairman Fred Jones questioned if the word shall is correct, since the board cannot control what parents do. Mr. Andrews suggested the education of a Durham Catholic school student is a joint effort that includes parents working in concert with the school board. If the board meets its respon- sibilities, but parents do not, “our efforts are hin- dered. “I happen to believe that’s very important. We have a right to have expec- tations of parents,” he noted. DURHAM —Some Catholic high school stu- dents in the region “slander the fine reputation of what we’re trying to do” when they wear their uniform in an untidy manner off school property, said Os- hawa Trustee Stan Kar- wowski this week. The Durham Catholic District School Board trustee was commenting at Monday night’s board meeting as second reading was given to an amended appropriate dress for pupils’ policy. It states “principals shall encourage full compliance with the policy”. “We as a board have to send a message that it’s time to tighten up,” said Trustee Karwowski, adding, “pride doesn’t start when you enter the school property.” Student representative David Byrne of Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School said the values of parents are trans- ferred to their children. “In a little way, it’s kind of out of our control,” he said. When Whitby Trustee Mary Ann Martin said the majority of students “re- spect the dress code”, Trustee Karwowski agreed he was referring to a mi- nority of pupils. News Advertiser Billboard Oct. 26, 2001 Catholic trustee laments lack of respect for uniforms GRANT YEO ‘That’s very important.’ BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer DURHAM —A 36- year-old man, charged last week with the 1998 rape of a Bowmanville teenager, is the first suspect linked to an unsolved crime in this region by a national DNA data bank, police said. And detectives are now reviewing other outstand- ing cold cases in Durham for potential links to the suspect, who was arrested at gunpoint by tactical offi- cers at his Peterborough- area residence at 5:30 p.m. A police spokesman said it’s the first “hit”for the force on an unsolved case since the federally legislat- ed DNA registry was creat- ed last year. “It was a violent sexual assault and it was devastat- ing to the victim,”Durham Regional Police Sergeant Paul Malik said of the 1998 attack. By law, all persons con- victed of certain criminal offences are now required to submit a blood sample for purposes of storing their DNA profile — or ge- netic fingerprint — on file with the Ottawa-based na- tional registry. The profiles are stored in a computer database and are cross-referenced with DNA from unsolved crimes submitted by law enforce- ment agencies. Detective Sergeant Lynne Kantautas, in charge of Durham’s sexual assault squad, said police learned late Tuesday a DNA match was found in relation to the “stranger-assault”on the Bowmanville teen three years ago. The 18-year-old victim was attacked at 1 a.m. on Oct. 1, 1998 while walking on Waverley Road. Police said she was grabbed from behind, dragged under a large tree on the front lawn of a home and sexually as- saulted. The attacker threatened her with a knife and struck the teen in the head several times during the assault, which occurred during a heavy rainfall. Police at the time said the assailant fled north on Waverley while the trauma- tized victim banged on the door of a residence scream- ing for help. The suspect was de- scribed as a white man, 5- foot-10 to 6-feet-tall and had been wearing blue jeans and possibly hiking or work boots. Police canvassed the neighbourhood for witness- es and appealed to the pub- lic for leads, but investiga- tors “hit a dead end”, Det. Sgt. Kantautas said. She said evidence from the crime scene was sub- mitted at the time to the Centre for Forensic Sci- ences crime lab and the at- tacker’s DNA profile even- tually was placed on the national bank. Last month a man was convicted of assault caus- ing bodily harm in Peter- borough and ordered to give a sample to the DNA bank, said Sgt. Malik. The RCMP, which over- sees the registry, notified Durham police of the “hit” Tuesday, Sgt. Malik said. Det. Sgt. Kantautas said the arrest highlights the po- tential and importance of the national DNA bank for law enforcement. “This was a very serious, stranger-assault that had re- mained unsolved,”she said. A man described as a labourer who lives with a common-law wife and three children was arrested without incident at his resi- dence in the village of Bailieboro, in Cavan Town- ship, by Durham tactical and OPP officers. Gerald Norman Benard (who also goes by Bernard), 36, appeared in Oshawa provincial court Thursday on charges of sexual assault with a weapon, assault and wear- ing a disguise during an of- fence. The victim and her par- ents attended the court ap- pearance. Mr. Benard was remanded in custody until a later bail hearing. Meanwhile in a similar, unrelated development, Det. Sgt. Kantautas said the DNA data bank has linked an Oshawa man convicted last month of sexual assault to an unsolved sex case in Nova Scotia. No arrest has yet been made. A/P PAGE 20 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, October 26, 2001 DNA bank cashes check on Durham suspect Police lay dozens of charges in RIDE blitz DURHAM —The Durham Regional Police Service’s Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program was out in force last weekend. Of 2,240 vehicles stopped, 49 were given a roadside breath test, 22 dri- vers received 12-hour sus- pensions for registering a warning, and five people were arrested for drinking and driving. Other charges laid dur- ing the weekend include one charge for refusing a breath sample, five for dri- ving while suspended, and six additional Highway Traffic Act violations. The Durham Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) assisted in the spot checks, giving gifts such as notepads to drivers who consumed no alcohol at all. MADD members expressed disap- pointment in the number of people still drinking and driving. Decorating Problems? Then we have the solutions ~ Design Answers ~ The Lap of Modern Design Problem: I am ready to invest in new seating for my great room, we like relaxed comfort with style and low maintenance. Is there such a creature? Solution:The new modular sectional is such a creature - crea- ture of comfort, style and practically that is!With it’s sleeker styling, generous proportions and the varied posi- tioning possibilities - it invites you to lie back and relax in pure comfort. What’s so great about modular section- als? Well the key is the term modular, it means that each seating segment is built as an individual entity - it can stand alone as a chair or because it has modular capabilities it can connect with one or more of its ilk to just about any configuration you desire. (some come with reclining capabilities and /or adjustable backs) This means no more struggling to maneuver those long L-shaped pieces inside the front door, down the basement stairs or up to second storey family rooms. • It also means that when you move and the new living area (either the shape or square footage - it’s always something) dif- fers, you can simply reconfigure the pieces to fit the needs of your new home. • Most importantly what it means is, you have an opportunity to style your interi- or according to your tastes. To experience through modern living the joy of sculpting your seating to suit your needs, Yyu really can’t get any more comfortable or practical than that! So indulge, sit a spell in the lap of modern design. Charmaine Wynter is a Certified Interior Decorator and the owner of Wynter Interiors Decorating Services (905) 420-0040. Directed by Iain Softley. A mysterious and extraordi- nary mental patient, Prot (Spacey), convinces both staff and fellow patients he comes from a utopian planet called K- PAX. While his psychiatrist, Dr. Mark Powell (Bridges), is baf- fled by this cheerfully confident man, Prot’s description of life on a planet 7,000 light years away awakens a sense of possibility among the other patients. The doctor gradually begins to witness the remarkable effect the so-called alien is having on the mental health of the hospi- tal’s other patients. When Prot says he’s going back before the summer ends, all the patients in the ward vie to go with him. As the days before Prot’s announced departure from Earth race by, Dr. Powell struggles with questions of science. (Cineplex-Odeon Ajax 10 Cin- emas, Famous Players Picker- ing 8 Cinemas - Pickering Town Centre). 13 GHOSTS Starring F. Murray Abraham, Shannon Elizabeth, Tony Shal- houb, Kathryn Anderson. Directed by Steve Beck. A family inherits a spectacu- lar old house from an eccentric uncle. There’s just one problem: the house seems to have a dangerous agenda all of its own. Trapped in their new home by strangely shifting walls, the family en- counters powerful and vengeful entities that threaten to annihilate anyone in their path. Soon the family is joined by an offbeat ghost hunter deter- mined to free the spirits impris- oned in the house. Caught in a frantic race to save themselves before it is too late, the human in- habitants realize the house is a riddle that contains the key to their imminent salvation — or destruction. At Scarborough General everybody comes in and thinks they have the Anthrax virus. I’ll bet you CNN has doubled the cost to their advertisers because so many people are watching their station. The terrorists are using our media to disseminate propaganda and fear. How ironic! The TV, radio and news media continue to be a willing pawn in the hands of the terrorist and shamelessly acquiesce to their wishes. Why...because it seems to me that the media has prostituted itself in hope of better ratings. Good news doesn’t sell as much as bad. Sad. Last year a plane crash where over 200 were killed got major coverage for a few days and then very little after it. Two hundred lives lost. To date 3 people have died from Anthrax and some 30 or more infected but they will recover. This is in a nation of 500 million and yet it’s 24 hour a day coverage. While I am deeply concerned for our postal workers both here and in the USA, I am sickened by the irresponsibility of some of the media. U.S. Senator John McCain said that “One two bit Islamic Fundamentalist, who is no more Muslim than I am, is changing the whole world because of hatred” (paraphrase). This bombing could go on for 2 years or more. We have taken a lot for granted. But here’s the good news. Our government in co-operation with other governments will take every precaution necessary that’s for sure. We will win the war. They will find an electronic system to detect and prevent hazardous materials from harming postal workers and citizens. Letter sending will become safe again. If they can’t find a system to detect hazardous material then we will have to personally deliver it to the post office and show ID. Big deal. We deliver it to our super boxes all the time and sometimes I go directly to our post office and deliver it. Life will go on. We will catch these heartless cowards. Our soldiers, our Mounties, our police will not sleep till they smoke these criminals out. We as citizens will be vigilant. We will work with each other for a common cause. We will find ways to beat them and good will triumph over evil every time. I believe that with all my heart. We will come out of this stronger than ever before. Like the Irish and British we will soon become fed up and we won’t take it any more. The British and Irish face car bombs and other terrorist activity all the time. It’s a way of life. They have refused to stop living their lives. Their governments have taken every precaution possible but they live life to the fullest! They won’t give in. Democracy rules! What has the violence in Ireland and Britain accomplished? Nothing! Will it stop? The developments this week are promising. Who knows but the Brits haven’t stopped living nor have the Irish. NOR SHOULD WE!! I would be just as scared as anyone else if I got hazardous material in an envelope but what should I do? Never open another envelope? Never fly again? Build an air raid shelter? Walk around in fear? Not in this life. I remember people used to say that the chances of getting killed in a car accident were ten times greater than flying on a plane. I think it’s the same here. The chances of being exposed and dying from anthrax are slim but if it’s your time then it’s your time whether it’s anthrax or a heart attack or natural causes. Will it get like Britain and Ireland here? I doubt it. Even if it does we can’t hide forever. Life is too short. Mark my words. Canadians will get tired and fed up and finally come squinting out into the sunlight again. Like Hitler, Bin Lauden and his murdering thugs will be defeated. I watched with pride as our troops left from Halifax. I got emotional when I saw some young moms and their kids with tears rolling down their cheeks waving to their father’s heading out. Canadians were the first on the beaches of Dieppe in WW2. Good will overcome evil. God will prevail. God bless Canada! The central east region of the Ontario Secondary School Students’ Associa- tion (OSSSA) is hosting a leadership conference at Dunbarton High School from Nov. 8 to 11. “We’ll have motivation- al speakers, dances, a chance to go swimming, leadership development sessions, and a chance for the delegates to speak their mind about certain topics in education today,” said Nicole Goldman, central east president and a Picker- ing High School student. The 26-year-old OSSSA is a non-profit, student-run organization committed to providing leadership train- ing to Ontario students. The central east region is one of 12 in the province, encompassing the Durham, Durham Catholic, Kawartha-Pine Ridge, Pe- terborough-Victoria- Northumberland and Clar- ington Catholic, and Trilli- um-Lakelands district school boards. Public relations minister Melissa O’Connor, in a press release, said another purpose of the organization is “to work with the Min- istry of Education on issues that concern students by gathering student opinion”. To that end, the organiza- tion plans to send out a stu- dent feedback form to every central east region high school, and possibly every Ontario high school, by the end of the school year. “The results will be handed to the ministry in either May or June,” said Ms. Goldman, adding stu- dents will be queried about teacher testing and other topics. To get involved in the conference, visit the central east Web site on the Inter- net at www.ceosssa.cjb.net, or e-mail ceosssa@hot- mail.com. Like the Olympic flame’s jour- ney through a host country, the wooden cross is making its way across Canada in anticipation of the event next July 18 to 28. Pope John Paul II gave the cross to the young people of the world as a symbol of their faith in 1984, when the first WYD was held in Rome. Planning is well under way for the 17th event, which is expect- ed to attract up to one million young Catholics from more than 150 coun- tries to the Greater Toronto Area. And while an anticipated mass by the Pope is a highlight, Sharron McKeever told trustees Monday night the event is about much more than seeing the Pope. “The Pope is only one tiny part of this whole endeavour,” said the board’s consultant for religious edu- cation. “Most of the time will be spent with young people sharing with each other.” Ms. McKeever said the board wants to have students involved in determining what event is planned around the cross’s stop in Durham. The date has yet to be determined. While local priests are taking the lead role in planning WYD,Vanessa Taber, secondary education consul- tant with the board, said there are ways for local students and their families to participate if they wish. Families can volunteer to billet visitors, and education director Grant Andrews said the board is looking to provide some space in its facilities. “We anticipate that indeed a number of our schools may serve as centres of accommodation for some of the people attending WYD,” he said. Students and others can volun- teer to help with some of the planned events or, as a pilgrim, par- ticipate fully in WYD. Ms. Taber said committees of roughly 15 students have been formed at each of the board’s high schools, under the direction of the school chaplain, to prepare for the event. They plan to encourage the community to get involved in WYD, assist with the billet drive and fund-raise to sponsor Third World youth who otherwise could not attend. Austin Catholic Sec- ondary School Wildcats at the Pickering school Wednesday afternoon. Telus overcomes early deficit, only to lose late lead to Brampton DURHAM —The Telus Lightning and the Brampton Thunder took turns giving up two-goal leads, settling in- stead for a 4-4 tie in National Women’s Hockey League play in Brampton Satur- day night. A two-goal Telus lead late in the game evaporated as Brampton rebound- ed to score twice, including the equaliz- er with only 55 seconds left, in NWHL play. The draw with Brampton gives the Lightning (1-1-1 for three points) a hold on second place in the NWHL’s West di- vision. Telus head coach Don Henwood noted many positives in the draw. After being humbled 10-1 by the strong Beat- rice Aeros last Monday, the team re- sponded with renewed vigour against Brampton. “The nice thing is we came off a big defeat last Monday to the Aeros and we were able to put that behind us and play an entirely different game against Brampton,” he said. His charges’ ability to rally from a two-goal, first-period deficit was also a good sign, something that last year’s scoring-challenged club may not have been able to pull off. “I’m very satisfied with the way the team has progressed to date,” said Hen- wood. “We not only played to a tie against one of the top teams, but we’re able to put the puck in the net more com- pared to last season. We’re also getting a lot more shots this year than last year.” The Thunder sprinted out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Telus finally woke up in the middle frame, scoring twice to even the score. Sharon Williamson scored Telus’ first goal, as- sisted by Sarah Reid and Elizabeth Chi- asson. Just over a minute later, Natalie Babony tied the score with helpers to Tina Evers and captain Erin Rourke. The Lightning continued to fire on all cylinders in the third period. At the 19:29 mark, Karen Kett put the Light- ning ahead, assisted by Williamson and Christianne Tremills. More than a minute later, Tina Evers scored for Telus to increased its lead to 4-2. Babony and Tremills drew assists. Sarah Couch made a number of key saves to help Telus earn the tie. Telus outshot the Thunder 35-32. The Lightning hope to carry the mo- mentum into Saturday night’s game against the 5-1-1 Ottawa Raiders at the Ajax Community Centre. P PAGE 28 NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY EDITION, October 26, 2001 New partner figures into medal performances for local skater PICKERING —A new part- nership for a Pickering figure skater has yielded immediate re- sults. Matthew Smith, of Pickering, joined with new dance partner Katie Zegers, of the Woodstock Figure Skating Club, last April. And, the duo’s first few competi- tions of the season at the novice dance level have resulted in podium finishes. At the most recent event — Oc- toberfest in Barrie — Smith and Zegers won gold in the compulsory dances and free dance. The duo is now ranked as the top novice pair in central Ontario. At the Autumnskate meet in Ot- tawa last month, the pair earned sil- ver in the free dance, and in August, during their debut as a team, won silver in the free dance and bronze for the compulsory dances at the Thornhill Summer Skate event. The next meet for the duo is a pivotal one. Zegers and Smith will compete in novice dance at the Central Ontario Sectionals in Mis- sissauga Nov. 9 and 10. They will attempt to finish among the top four, thus earning a trip to the East- ern Canadians in Sydney, N.S. from Dec. 7 to 10. The top eight finishers there advance to the Ju- nior Canadians in St. John’s, New- foundland from Jan. 26 to 28. Smith is a member of both the Upper Canada Skating Club and Skate Canada Pickering Figure Skating Club. Roy and Sue Bradshaw, from the Canadian Ice Dance Academy in Thornhill, coach the duo. PICKERING ––Matthew Smith and new partner Katie Zegers are off to a fine start in their first season together on ice. Durham atom girls unbeatable Six wins, two ties to open league and tournament play DURHAM —The Durham West Light- ning atom ‘AA’ girls’ hockey team is off to a fast start in league play with an unbeaten record in its first five games. The quick start has translated into first place in the North Metro Girls’ Hockey League standings with a 4-0-1 record. In its latest league game, Durham tied the Aurora Panthers 2-2. Trisha Egberts scored the first goal with an assist from Brooke Sawyer. Layne Farrell added the other off the inside post with help from Tara Watchorn and Lynsey Nakamura. Egberts, with an assist to Kaitlyn Hill, scored the winner as Durham squeezed by the Markham-Stouffville Stars 3-2 in Stouffville. Natalie Spooner opened the scoring with as- sists by Alannah Wakefield and Kailey Chap- pell. Danielle Boudreau scored the other goal. In their third game of the season, the Lightning blasted the Scarborough Sharks 5- 0. Spooner, Watchorn, Hill, Egberts, and Kayla Richard scored. Nakamura and Sawyer each had two assists, while Danielle Boudreau and Egberts added one apiece. Durham beat the Whitby Wolves 3-1 at Ajax Community Centre. The Lightning out- shot the Wolves 24-9, but the Whitby goalie made several big saves to keep the score re- spectable. Watchorn scored the first goal on a pass from Sawyer. Spooner then connected for the second, assisted by Hill, and the third, into an empty-net, on a feed from Richard. The Lightning travelled to Brampton for the opening game of the season, beating the host Canadettes 2-1. Spooner and Watchorn scored, while Kim Caggiula stopped a bar- rage of shots in the third period to preserve the win. At the Willowdale tournament last month, the Lightning defeated Mississauga ‘AA’‚ 3- 1, tied the Willowdale Red Wings 4-4, and beat Bluewater 3-2. Because tournament re- sults were measured by points per period Durham West did not advance to the playoffs. Other team members are Madison Reeves, Jessica Ronald. Dino Caggiula coaches the team, assisted by Geoff Reeves, Tim Wakefield, and Bruce Nakamura.
