DECEMBER 8. 1998 S gets funds, to `protect children be Children's aid societies across the province will be able to hire hundreds of additional front-line workers, while a foster parent program will be "revitalized" under a new funding model, the government has pledged. "We now have a method of funding child protection that is fair and better reflects the work- load and service needs of chil- dren's aid societies (CAS);' Min- ister of Community and Social Services and Durham West MPP Janet Ecker announced Thursday. Earlier this year, the provincial budget provided an additional $170 million over the next three years for CAS. The Green Door Alliance (GDA), an organization dedicate to the preservation of agricultural, natural and recreational lands in Pickering and elsewhere, has put together an analysis which opposes Ottawa's decision announced in July to designate federal lards in north Pickering for airport use. The GDA will submit the analy- sis to Transport Canada and local municipal and regional authorities. '"his was written in order to argue that the decision is prema- ture;' says GDA member Brian Buckles. who authored the docu- ment. "We're not suggesting a fu- ture airport be precluded. We just think all evidence points to it being very premature at this point." Mr. Buckles's analysis bases that conclusion on seven major fac- tors, including: - Pearson airport is not expected to reach its full capacity for 30 to 50 years, and another major airport may not be needed even then, since past air traffic growth predictions have proved inaccurate. • If and when demand warrants it, the Hamilton airport is the best sit- uated to take on the additional air traffic from a demographic and fi- nancial standpoint. - If a small, regional airport is need- ed, Buttonville could meet that need at less cost and more efficient- ly. The event, organised by Skills Canada -Ontario, chal- lenged students from across the province to design. construct and race a cardboard boat across a 25 -metre pool. But that was only part of the challenze. Boats that sun ived the first heat were then filled with students to determine which team's vessel could hold the most weight. The winning boat, made by students from a Scarhorough high school, held more than 1,040 pounds. The team from Eastdale Col- legiate and Locational Institute in Oshawa finished sixth overall, the two squads from Port Pem High School placed ninth and 10th and the two teams from Os- hawa's Monsignor John Perey- ma Catholic Secondary School were I Sth and 24th. The GDA document recommends all lands in excess of those needed to safe- guard a possible future airport he sold, with conservation casements registered on title to prohibit uses other than agri- culture and conservation. It suggests in- dependent studies be prepared, includ- ing public consultation and review of al- ternatives, before any consideration is given in the future to building an airport at Pickering. It also states local govern- ment should he given a key say in whether a regional airport is built, where on the federal lands It would be located and how it should operate. According to Mr. Buckles, the GDA is particularly keen on having the deci- sion on whether to build an airport in Pickering taken out of the hands of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority. " I think it will be a good year;' says Ron Galbraith of Galbraith Jewellers in Ajax. "Sales are going well:" And while most retailers have found that people who have started their shopping early spend more time find- ing that 'special something' for those on their shopping lists, Mr. Galbraith has even noticed "men are shopping earlier than usual this year. December 6 marked the ninth an- niversary of perhaps the lowest moment in Canadian history when crazed gun- man Marc Lepine, hatred in his heart for women, stormed into Ecole Poly - technique in Montreal and ruthlessly gunned down 14 female students, facul- ty and administrators. Then, Lepine turned the gun on himself. The Montreal Massacre as it came to be known set off a firestorm of debate throughout the country in the days, weeks and months after it happened. Candlelight vigils have marked the an- niversaries since 1989 with sincere speeches from caring individuals who have demanded change in our society. While admittedly extreme in the worst way, the horrifying event mir- rored the assaults many women feel from the men in their lives on a daily basis. From physical beatings, to verbal abuse, to sexual harassment on the job ,and elsewhere, to stalking cases, to being paid less for work of equal value, to facing a 'glass' ceiling, to being dis- criminated against in so many ways, women don't get a fair shake in our so- ciety. That's the real legacy of the Montre- al Massacre. It was a signal to women everywhere that the threat of violence just around the corner. But, what has been done to Chan the place of women in Canadian sock since 1989? What programs are in pla to help women who've been abused a to convince men, through educatic and rule of law to stop abusing t women in their lives. The New Choices program, run 1 Family Services for Durham Regic aims to change the behaviour of who have been involved in spo abuse. The Durham Rape Crisis Cen runs the Victims in Crisis Assis Referral Services (VICARS) pregion to closely help those women who' been assaulted. The media has played part in making very real the stories women who've faced abuse. The c have been urged to get serious spousal abuse and to hand out toughe sentences to men who use force women. Nearly a decade has gone by sin the Montreal Massacre and it's tragedy we must never forget. As we poised on the edge of a new millenn um, progress is being made towards more equal system, one that is evolvi into a society that is fair and free for its members. We are correlating strate- gies in schools that have experi- enced success on this year's Grade 3 results and sharing them across tie board. Mr. MacLeod and Mr. Brown say they too have had negative ex- periences with officers, when they were told there wasn't anything the police could do about a neighbour who yelled obscenities at the couple including calling them pedophiles, because the person was just ex- pressing her opinion. Allan, a gay Oshawa business- man who moved to the area four years ago, says people can have their own opinion, but they can't in- fringe on the rights of others. "Everyone is entitled to their opinion, that's part of the beauty of living in this great country... but you can't take it outside of your four square walls and affect others,,' he says. The two eventually got sick of the slurs, saddened by the children who would tell them they were no longer allowed to stop by their yard to play with the dog because their parents had told them the couple was bad and would do bad things to them. "We started to feel isolated:' says Mr. Brown, who explained the couple really had no friends. i Mr. MacLeod adds, "People would turn their backs when we'd say hello." However, shortly after that they witnessed the fust glimmer of hope, that their house could truly feel like a home, when a new family moved into the neighbourhood. The par- ents and the children treated the couple the way they longed to be in this new and often cruel communi- ty. Like neighbours. "Within the last two years we've made some good friends on the street and through them some peo- ple they know have conte to know us:' says Mr. MacLeod, explaining while it's easier now, there are still those on the street who won't talk to them or anyone who is friends with the couple. That's five decades since the United Nations affirmed the dignity and rights of all human beings in the Universal De- claration of Human Rights. The declaration essentially became the basis for worldwide policies, includ- ing the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian and Ontario Human Rights Codes, promoting social equity, the right to life and liberty and economic, social and cultural rights that prohibit discrimination. But, how far have we Canadians come? Dave Patterson, who immigrated to Canada from Pakistan 25 years ago, says Canada has accomplished a lot. "Canada is God's country. We may pay high taxes, but we have a lot of ben- efits many other countries don't; some don't have any human rights" Mr. Patterson, past president of the Multicultural Council of Oshawa/Durham, believes perceptions and attitudes among Canadians have changed dramatically for the better to- ward immigrants and visible minorities. But, it hasn't always been easy for him. Recalling a particularly demeaning and frustrating time shortly after arriv- ing in Canada, he says he telephoned a Toronto company to set up an interview for an advertised position. He was told to come to the office. "When I got there the guy looked at me and asked my name. I said Dave Pat- terson. He looked me over and said 'The job's taken.' I said, 'But I just called: I went home and called again under an- other name - the job wasn't taken. It cre- ates anger in you." Though he's occasionally still the re- cipient of slurs, Mr. Patterson has found a comfortable niche in Oshawa where he lives with his wife and two children and works as a tool and die maker. Amarjit Sodhi found the barrier be- tween her family and the: community slowly came down. "7be children in my son's Grade 2 class had never heard of India;' recalls Ms. Sodhi, whose family moved to Bowmanville in 1969. "They thought he was a Native Indian. They used to ask him where's your bow and arrow?" Ms. Sodhi says such questions stemmed from ignorance, adding that road goes both ways. She admits that when she first arrived in Canada she was a "little nervous talking to white peo- ple," a fact she attributes greatly to her experience back home. Then, under English rule, white children were strongly discouraged from playing with Indian kids. As a result, Ms. Sodhi moved to Canada, along with her husband, Kuldip (now president of the Ontario Federation of Sikhs) with the fear that they would- n't be accepted or would remain on the periphery of the community. At first, that was indeed the case she says. It took a tragi¢ event — the death of her son — to tear down the final bricks of the wall. Many visited her home to offer sup- port, and some participated in the funer- al procession. 'And I realized then we can be friends" Both Mr. Patterson and Ms. Sodhi believe ignorance is at the core of racism. Education, they say, is the key to overcoming racial differences and dis- crimination, but it must start with chil- dren at a very young age. And it's this same belief that inspired the Durham District School Board (DDSB) to establish an ethnocultural and race relations department and to im- plement numerous school -wide anti - racist programs. "I began teaching my children, when they were a year old, to respect other people," says Lewis Williams, newly ap- pointed facilitator of the DDSB's ethno- cultural and race relations department. "tile school system is strategically positioned to bring about social change. Through board programs like STAR (Students Together Against Racism), we are empowering kids to make change. Anti -racism education is just good edu- cation." Since STAR was first introduced six years ago, more than 700 Durham stu- dents, in Grades 7 through 10, have par- ticipated in the intensive one-week, fall program that was designed to promote social and racial harmony and teach leadership and conflict resolution skills. "It's a very powerful program," says Mr. Williams, co-founder of STAR. "We take them, and I would like to think, re- fine and teach them about caring for other people. Can you imagine each year sending 130 to 140 kids who care back to school, back into the community?" In recognition of the United Na- tions' Declaration of Human Rights 50th anniversary, the DDSB, in partnership with the Multicultural Council of Os- hawa/Durharn is holding a celebration on Dec. 10. The night will feature tradi- tional cultural dance and music by mem- bers of the community as well as show- case hundreds of creative pieces, art, poems and stories centering on human rights by local students. The DDSB invites the public to drop by at the Durham District School Board headquarters (400 Taunton Rd. E.) on Dec. 11, and Dec. 14 through 17, to take in the display. "We still need a lot of work. We need it groups to get out there and talk to peo- ple. IM Sport SHORTS PeeweeLightning DEC. 8, 1998 Pickering tykes win nail -biter in tourney final PICKERING — The Pickering Pan- thers Lone Star Cafe tyke select hockey team captured the title at the recent Uxbridge Select Tournament. The final between Pickering and Whitby was an exciting contest from start to finish. The game was tied 3-3 at the end of regulation time, forcing a shoot-out to decide the winner. After the first five shooters, the teams had one goal apiece. Then came a sudden -death shoot-out in which the first team to score would win. In the fourth round, Picker- ing's Alex Morra slid the puck under a sprawling Whitby goalie for the deciding marker in a 4-3 victory. Scoring in regu- lation time were Brad Riches, Kyle Sawyer and Jay Henry, with assists to Daniel Fyfe. Sawyer and Patrick Booth. Pickering opened the event with a 2-1 win over Ajax. Sawyer and Henry scored the Panthers' goals, assisted by Ryan Hoefs and Booth. The Panthers upended Clarington 2-1 in the second game. Mark Frawley scored the winning goal, assisted by Morra. Henry had the other Pickering goal, unassisted. Panthers' goalie Lee Melnike was outstanding throughout the tournament. Pickering also fared well in the tour- ney's skills competition. The duo of Karim Corringham and Jimmy Janiero won silver medals in the shooting por- tion. The team of Anthony Valera, Fyfe and Sawyer won bronze in the skating event. Atom Panthers take tourney PICKERING — The Pickering Pan- thers Dalts Honda-Scotiabank major atom 'A' rep hockey team has been on a roll in recent league and tournament ploy - The Panthers earned the champi- onship at the Oakwood -Little Britain tournament, defeating the Oshawa Little NHL Canadiens 8-2 in the final. Picker- ing opened up a 4-1 lead in the second period, and padded its advantage in the final frame. Trevor Walsh scored a pair of goals in the final, Sean Quinlan, Brian Austin, Chris Rotolo, Kevin Hussey, Jeremy Whelan and Scott Waters had one apiece. Assisting were Ryan Jackson, Austin and Waters with two each, Whe- tan, Hussey, Rotolo, Callum Woods and Walsh with one apiece. Pickering opened the tourney with a 6-3 victory over St. Alphonsus of Peter- borough. The Panthers earned a 5-2 vic- tory over the Oshawa Bruins in the sec- ond game to advance to the final. In recent league play, the Panthers continue to perform well, posting six wins and three ties in their last nine out- kVs, The Pickering peewees earned a 4-4 tie with the Clarirtgton Toros, a 5-5 draw with Port Perry and a 5-1 win over the Oshawa Labourers. The Pickering peewees also blanked Cobourg 4-0, tied Oshawa State Farm 3-3 and beat the Sam team 5-4, scored a 3-2 win over Ajax, an 8-3 win over Oshawa and a 6-2 victory over Port Hope. The team has received strong two. way play from forwards Jason Kras- nowski and Bryan Cruse and solid de- ferisivrr work from blueliners Kory Young, Nide Hobson, Derek Twig and Kevin Hu- caluk during this stretch. The Pickering peewees currently sport a league record of 9-3-2. strike for Barrie Sharkfest title Girls beat Stoney Creek The Durham West Lightning peewee 'B' girls' rep hockey' team put the bite on the com- petition to capture the championship at the Barrie Sharkfest Tournament recently'. The Lightnings rocked Stoney Creek 4-1 in the final. Salvatrice Assenza netted a pair of goals, Stacey Vahey and Kristen Anderson had one apiece. Assists went to Amanda Lilly Jen- nah Cheesrnan, Vahey, Lisa Lillie and Katyn )`lilanoski with one apiece. Vahey earned most valuable player honours. Durham W'cst's toughest test of the tourney came in the semi-final contest against Missis- sauga. The game was tied I - I at the end of re�- ulation time. In the shootout. Hoops winners whoop it up AJAX — Unbeaten East Side Mario's edged the improving Glenn's Auto Service in Ajax Ladies' Bas- ketball League play last Wednesday night. Although Glenn's was successful with its long-range shooting in the first half, Mario's strong offensive re- bounding led the team to a half-time lead. In the second half, both teams played a defen- sive -style game with Mario's corning out ahead 34-30. Engrid Carmichael led the way for East Side Mario's with 12 points. Katherine Drury netted 14 for Glenn's. In the second game of the night, Dakota Bob's and the Bank of Montreal played even until the second half when Bob's pulled away with quick pass- es and accurate shoot- ing en route to a 40-32 victory.
