The Durham Catholic District School Board released the individ- ual school results from last year's province -wide tests Friday and Mr. Andrews says, "I'm happy in terms of where we are at this point in time" The board's results compare favourably with those across the province. Across Ontario, 85 per cent of students scored at or above a level two in reading, 93 per cent reached that level in writing and 86 per cent achieved that level or higher in math. In Durham, 87 per cent of separate students scored at or above a level two in reading, 93 per cent reached or exceeded that level in writing and 88 per cent achieved a level two or higher in math. "I certainly expect (the test re- sults) will improve over time;" says Mr. Andrews, who notes the reading, writing and math tests, administered last spring by the Ed- ucation Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), were based on a new curriculum document that had just been introduced last yearnr "The Grade 3 students only Eia this curriculum for a number of months. I don't think it's a realistic expectation to say kids should al- ready be at level three (the new provincial standard);" Mr. An- drews says. NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY EDITION, NOVEMBER 29, 1998 PAGE 3 P ax jPi"cken"ng pledge smessage Safe Communities of Pickering/Ajax program brings two towns together Ajax and Pickering have joined forces to promote safety in the community. An official launch was held at Pine Ridge Secondary School Wednesday morning for Safe Communities of Pickering/Ajax (SCOPA), making this area the 15th in Cana- da to embark on such a program and the first in Durham and the Greater Toronto Area. The event also marked the beginning of SCOPA's participation in the Safe Communities Incen- tive Program (SCIP), focused on reducing worker injuries at local small businesses, in partnership with the Workplace Safety and In- surance Board. Ajax-Pickering's new organization, which includes business, industry and community group representatives, has been established with the assistance of the Safe Communities Foundation, a public-private partnership launched in 1996. The foundation was created by Paul Kells, whose son Sean was burned to death four years ago on the third day of his part-time job. Mr. Kells wanted to ensure other families would not have to go through the pain and suffering his family did as the re- sult of losing a child through an avoidable ac- cident. "Our goal is to make Canada the safest country in the world in which to live, work and play, and we're doing it one community at a time," foundation chairman Pat Corley told those assembled at the launch. In addition to resources and support, the foundation is providing SCOPA with S 12,0(X) 'seed money' to help launch a SCIP injury Search rights won't change Catholic schools' policy A Supreme Court ruling granting teachers the right to search students will make little difference in the way Catholic educators go about their busi- ness in Durham, a school board official reports. In an 8-1 decision Thursday, the high court ruled teachers and principals must have the flexibility to conduct rea- sonable searches to enforce school rules. But, Durham Catholic District School Board director Grant Andrews says the ruling won't have "much of an impact in terms of what we're doing al- ready." For example, he says school admin- istrators would be expected to search a student believed in possession of a "weapon or an illegal substance. "We would expect the principal would take action to remove that threat," be says. That may be as simple as asking the student to empty their pockets. "Each case is different. It's hard to say here's what happens every time," Mr. Andrews says. A teacher or princi- pal would react differently "if a student had a knife and was self -inflicting as opposed to a student who had a knife on them." 'lite ruling vindicated a vice-princi- pal at a Halifax school who searched a student at a school dance for drugs. Durham District Schoel Board officials could not be reached for comment. Pickering Regional Councillor Doug Dickerson (left) and Ajax Minor Steve Parish put aside anv political differences to promote a joint project bemx een the Pwo tokens which aim to make their workplaces safe. This joint project means the two commu- nities are the 15th in Canada to embark on such a program. prevention program here, reduce work-related injuries among youths aged 13 to 19 and es- tablish a community injury database for Ajax and Pickering. United Way honours Ajax, Pickering business community The United Way of Ajax -Pickering tipped its hat to the business community in recognition of its ef- forts to collectively lend a "helping hand" to people in need by raising money for this year's fund drive. "Completed campaigns within local industry, Town departments and the schools are showing a strong performance over last year;" reports cam- paign chairman Bob Pizer. "We have, however, a long way to go to reach our 1998 campaign goal of $1.3 million;" adds Mr. Pizer. "We are actively seeking new support from residents, small businesses, professionals and the real estate and building community to help reach our critical goal" The United Way has collected $630,000 to date. Members of the business community were toasted Thursday at a Community Builders Cele- bration at the Ajax Community Centre. "The evening was designed to celebrate the commitment of so many people to building our community through United Way;' noted master of ceremonies Joe Atkinson. '17hese are people (who) recognize the United Way as our community's largest community development effort, delivers a critical helping hand up to their neighbours, friends, family and co-workers" Campaign chairman Bob Pizer presented awards to several companies which successfully completed their fund-raising campaigns. Among those honoured as 'Pacesetters' were Pitney Bowes (Brock Road and Bayly Street locations), Bayly Communications, Siemens EltroCom Sorting Sys- tems, Ajax Hydro, Town of Pickering. Pickering Hydro, Purdue Frederick and others. "These firms kick-started the 1998 fund-raising IAMBERLEAI* efforts with their own aggressive campaigns," a press release from the United Way states. Three organizations were saluted as Leaders of the Way for their outstanding growth and contribu- tions. Messier Dowty employees celebrated a 40 - per cent growth over their 1997 campaign, while the Pickering nuclear station was recognized as the area's largest fund-raiser for its Generating Hope campaign that collected more than $275,000. Finally, Chrysler Canada's Ajax Trim Plant was honoured for its continued performance as the community's strongest employee campaign effort. In addition, Antrum Interface and Orthologic Canada were recognized for their "stellar" perfor- mances in the first-year campaigns, the United Way notes. The event was sponsored by Runnymede Devel- opment Corporation, which "welcomed the oppor- tunity to reward campaign volunteers and donors for their leadership role in a community -building initiative that's so necessary in Ajax -Pickering;' says manager of land development and planning Rodger Miller. The United Way funds more than 90 programs that reach 45,000 local residents — or one of three citizens in Ajax and Pickering. Agencies include Big Brothers, YWCA, Credit Counselling Services, Community Care, Meals on Wheels, Big Sisters, Victorian Order of Nurses, Rainbows and The Denise House. While Mr. Charest trails Premier Lucien Bouchard and his Parti Que- becois separatists by just one per cent — according to one poll — that one per cent means an easy majority for Mr. Bouchard. The problem for Mr. Charest is that because of his concen- tration of support on Montreal's West Island and in other selected ridings compared to Mr. Bouchard's broad- based support, the seats will tilt strongly for the PQ. In other words, big wins for Mr. Charest in a few rid- ings, smaller wins for Mr. Bouchard in a lot of ridings. Bad news for all. The near -certain Bouchard victory sets in motion an inevitable referen- dum several years from now, when, as Mr. Bouchard puts it, "winning conditions" exist for a 'Yes' vote. The 'neverendum' tag some pundits have put on the 30 -odd years of separatist talk will drone on, exhausting the rest of Canada (and many Quebecers too). More to the point, a PQ victory is an- other body blow to the Canadian economy, to our battered buck, to our attempts to attract foreign invest- ment. It signals to multi -national companies that Quebec is not a solid, sound place to do business or to lo- cate offices. But it seems those 40 per cent of Quebecers bent on supporting separa- tion really don't believe they have anything to lose by a split with the rest of Canada. Perhaps they believe Canada has nothing worth preserving for Quebec. Maybe they honestly be- lieve an independent Quebec will be more prosperous than the current al- ternative. It's difficult to comprehend the mindset of people who feel this way. But, there you have it. And what of Jean Charest'' He's developing into the most overrated politician in Canadian history. First, he couldn't beat that lightweight Kim Campbell for the federal Tory leader- ship. Then, when he was PC leader in 1997, he stumbled badly in the fcdcr- al election. Now, he appears certain to lose in Quebec. Maybe it's time to polish up his legal degree and prac- tisc law. For the rest of us, we'll have to muddle on, dealing with Quebec's demands. We had better be prepared for another referendum and this time, let's hope for a clearcut federal win. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Put real news front page of the News Ad on Page 1, not VOCAL airport foes To the editor: It is becoming tiresome to see so many articles and pictures of Voters Organized to Cancel Air- port Lands (VOCAL) on the Fabulous 40! It doesn't hurt a bit It didn't appear in the News Adver- tiser's Name Dropping feature, but yours truly slammed into a major mile- stone recently. Earlier this month I reached the ripe old age of 40. Ouch! It's hard to believe that someone as handsome and youthful could be 40, but it's true. If you don't believe me, cut me in half and count the rings. For some reason, the significance of this birthday didn't register as much as turning 30. Hitting the three -oh seemed like the end of my youth, the start of the long trip down the slippery slope to an expanding forehead, falling arches and buttocks, continu:'I grumpi- ness and wearing plaid pants with striped shirts. Aside from the droop in my drawers, most of those -precursors of death didn't occur. Now I'm 40, which is supposed to mean I'm old old, old. But I don't feel that way. Maybe it's because of my im- maturity that I feel young. Or maybe I just don't know what old feels like. If old age is supposed to be accompanied by a lack of energy, mumbling to one- self and failing eyesight, well I've had those symptoms for years. Keith Gilligan Sia f Writer If feeling 40 is a state of mind, then I'm a winner there as well, thanks to my shallow, basically inert, brain. How else do you explain my argument that cartoons are a mind-expanding, cultur- al experience? Thee have been victories over the past four decades, although none by those stinking Boston Red Sox. How can a team let its heart and soul go? Sorry, I digress. I consider myself a winner because I still have a full head of hair (with plenty of grey thrown in for flavour), all my own, albeit yellow, teeth, a wardrobe without any team jer- seys and my health. Speaking of health, I have started making small steps toward a nutritious diet of more fruits and vegetables and Mess fast food. I'm not about to push Jack Lalane out of the Fitness Hall of Fame, but it's a start. It might not be a victory, but I've gotten this far without getting married. Considering that a victory or a loss will depend on your own marital status. Whets asked why I'm still single, I give my standard line: "I'm looking for a custom fit in an off -the -rack world." I've just never fdt the need to get married, settle down, buy a dog and have kids. Maybe I'm missing some- thing, like surprise birthday patties, hugs and kisses, childtett's spittle on my clothes and finger -paintings. Tirane are times when I feel like I'm married- When all the married guys I work or play with talk about how poor they are, I can empathize; the only folded paper in my pockets are Kleenex. Some of the fellas also complain about their kids doing something wrong. I'm the step-parent to felines Buddy and Wolf, and I've been known to complain about them imbedding their claws into my lap. Ouch, that harts — a lot more than turning 40! vertis- er protesting about an airport that may or not be built. It is my belief that the vast majority of Durham residents favour the present plans for the airport lands or don't care. There j is no need for them to voice their opinion, and they arc quite con- tent to wait for the various gov- ernments to make the proper de- cisions at the appropriate time. 1 It is reassuring to note that ? Durham Regional Council has declined to allow a deputation from VOCAL to present their case at a council meeting unless a majority of council members vote in favour of it. This may prevent having another childish display similar to the one that disrupted the Pickering Council meeting a few weeks ago. If VOCAL need to have addi- tional publicity it may be in the interest of parity and more pru- dent to publish smaller articles on an inside page, and leave the front page for newsworthy items. Durham students score well in provincial testing DURHAM From page I school in the board is working on an action plan to improve students' performance on the tests next year. Those plans are to be released to the public before Feb. 1. Tree board has had less finan- cial resources than many other boards yet our results are better than many in the province. 'Istat speaks well of our teachers and parents," Mr. Andrews says. However, he warns parents of the dangers in comparing schools based on the test results. "I don't believe in comparing schools and neither does the EQAO," he says. Mr. Andrews explains there are several factors that can affect a school's results, such as the num- ber of students for whom English is their second language, and the socio-economic backgrounds of pupils. "Province -wide assessment re - suits should be used by educators and parents to make decisions that will improve students' learning," EQAO head Joan Green says in a memo to school boards. P PP40E 10 NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY EDITION, NOVEIiiIIER 199S Province wants29, to help seniors `live in dignity' BY LINDA WHITE Staff writer Giving seniors the tools that allow them to "live in dignity" is the goal of the provincial government, which has announced funding for hundreds of new long-term care beds in community facilities. Those additional beds mean the frail will no longer have to spend their later years in a hospital if they are relatively healthy but can no longer live on their own and can't stay with a loved one. Minister of Long Term Care and Responsibility for Seniors Cam Jackson told dozens of seniors at a recent forum at the Whitby Seniors' Activity Cen- tre. But living in a hospital has been the "only option" for many because of a lack of planning by two previ- ous governments, criticized Mr. Jackson, who believes his govern- ment', commitment to seniors is ev- idenced through his appointment as the first 'long-term care minister' in North America. Luckily, I've found a re- searcher who claims two of my favourite foods, potatoes and bananas, decrease the risk of one of our most com- mon diseases. A good addi- tion to the Christmas stock- ing. Dr. Alberto Ascherio, As- sociate Professor of Nutrition at the Harvard School of' Pub- lic Health, says a high potas- sium diet decreases the risk of stroke. Dr. Ascherio and his col- leagues followed 50,000 men in 'The Health Professionals Follow-up Study.' Thea men completed a detailed ques- tionnaire on their long-term intake of 131 food items. The result? After eight years the risk of stroke was 38 per cent lower among men who consumed the most potassium. This finding was most striking in men who also suffered from high blood pressure. It was also of bcne- fit for those with normal blood pressure. But there's more to the potassium story. than it-, abili- ty to decrease blood pressure and in turn decrease the risk of a blood vessel rupturing. In 1996 Louis Tobian of the University of Minnesota carried out a fascinating ex- periment on rats. He fend hy- pertensive stroke -prone rats either a normal diet of potas- sium (0.75 per cent) or a high potassium diet (2.11 per cent). Eight months later 40 out of 58 rats on the normal diet had died. But only two were dead out of 95 on the high potassium diet. This was a 97 per cent reduction in mortali- ty! In another experiment Dr. Tobian gave rats a high sodi- um diet that caused thicken- ing of the arteries and hyper- tension. The resulting dam- age to blood vessels was then reduced 50 per cent by giving rats additional potassium. Why is potassium so vital to health? Dr. Tobian believes it's our link to prehistoric times. Early humans con- sumed four times as much potassium as modern day people. For the past four mil- lion years our bodies have been programmed to function more efficiently on a high potassium diet. Prior to 10,000 years ago humans ate a diet of nuts, fruits, tubers and roots with very little meat. This diet is high in potassium, low in sodium and high in fiber. Tribes in the Amazon Jun- gle, Papua and New Guinea and those in tribes in remote parts of Africa still consume sufficient potassium by eating fruits and berries. But civi- lization in the western world has created a deficiency for many, people. For instance, the climate of Scotland may be conducive to making the best scotch in the world. But it's a terrible climate to grow fruits and vegetables. And the Scottish suffer from a high rate of cardiovascular disease. Converseh the Southern V The Doctor Game I IV Gifford -Jo . M. D. English, French and Italians who reside where fruits and vegetables are plentiful have less cardiovascular disease. It's known that blacks in the U.S. have a low intake of potassium. They also show a high rate of hypertension, stroke and kidney disease. Potassium is a potent sut stance. For example, re- searchers have caused blood pressure to rise by simply re- stricting potassium intake for as little a% 10 days. But how does potassium 0 IF f - TIME ', QL:ILITY J - GENTLE DENTAL Lean's office continues its Adopt - CARE ARE IMPORTANT Q TO YOU WE ARE AVAILABLE TO SERVE YOt; WE WELCOME v NEW PATIENTS WE 4P PEOPLE OF ALL AGES s 24 HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICE X., 3 Harwrood Ave. S., Ajax, Ontario Compliments of Dr. Lean, (South of H,% -y. #2) at the Valleyfarm Rd.) A PERSONALIZED SOLUTION IPC took the time to come to my office and find out what I wanted," says Young. "They analyzed our exact needs. We talked about where we wanted to go in the future. The others were interested in selling me what they wanted to sell." Y2K compliance was an important part of the upgrade, and the IPC rep fully explained the tax benefits available, as well as the pros and cons of leasing versus purchase. Another thing Young liked about the IPC proposal was that it included both hardware and software. Consequently, there was no finger pointing between suppliers. "When you have one supplier responsible for everything, it takes a load off your mind," he explains. IPC base their solution on Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server, which features Windows NT 4.0 and the Small Business Edition of Microsoft Offwe97. The Yes Group network includes three new Pentium* processor based PCs, plus two of their original PCs. Regular physical help reduce the rate of bone min - activity can reduce or reverse the eral loss once it starts. Dr. Anita Myers, from the University of Waterloo, Department of Health Studies and Gerontology, in conjunction with the Centre for Activity and Aging, University of Western Ontario, has documented that once older adults find an exercise program they enjoy, they are more likely to stick with it than are younger adults. While many initially join for fun, companion- ship or just to get out of the house, they keep coming back because they "feel better" (have more energy, sleep better, feel more relaxed, have fewer aches and pains and are less constipat- ed). With regular exercise, func- tional fitness - the strength to carry one's groceries, the stamina to walk around the shopping mall and the flexibility to enjoy one's gardening - improves quickly. Isn't Osteoarthritis a sign of age? Our joints change with time, and as we age many of us will experience some aches and pains and a gradual loss of movement. However, osteoarthritis, a form of arthritis, is not simply a matter of getting older. It is a degenerative process that results in relatively rapid deterioration of a joint. It generally affects people in their sixties and seventies, but can also occur among those in their fifties and younger. In most cases, a regular exercise program designed to maintain joint move- ment and muscle strength and endurance will help people better maintain their normal activity level. The early symptoms of osteoarthritis are pain and stiff- ness in the joints. These symp- toms are especially noticeable first thing in the morning or after sit- ting in one place for lengthy peri- ods of time. Other symptoms may include swelling, redness or a feeling of heat right at the joint. The most commonly affected areas include the knees, hips, hands, neck and back. In some cases there is little or no pain. The fust obvious sign of osteoarthritis may be difficulty in reaching your feet when you be your shoelaces or cut your toe- nails. In other cases, a colleague or acquaintance may point out that you have developed a slight limp. These could be indications that you are beginning to lose some mobility in your joints. The best way to diagnose osteoarthritis is by having a com- plete physical examination. When someone is first diag- nosed with osteoarthritis, two types of treatment are generally available: anti-inflammatory medication to control the inflam- mation and alleviate the pain, and a daily exercise program to main- tain joint movement, muscle strength and endurance. In some cases of osteoarthri- tis of the hip or knee, surgery may be recommended at some point to replace the affected joint. However, the timing of the surgery is something to seriously think about. The artificial joints used to replace your arthritic joints may wear out with time and have to be replaced. Other minor surgical procedures are available in less severe cases. Discuss the treatment options with your physician and a physiotherapist. Osteoarthritis is a degenera- tive process that primarily affects the joints. However, it also has a secondary effect on the muscles surrounding the joints, causing them to weaken and shorten. While surgery can replace the actual joint, it doesn't replace the surrounding muscle which may also be affected through lack of use or improper use. If you decide to have surgery, it is important to take steps to ensure that the muscles are as strong and healthy as possible before the operation so you can enjoy close to normal movement after the joint has been replaced. An exercise program of as few as 15 minutes a day can help delay the need for surgery by allowing the muscles to better support the affected joint. This can slow the progress of the symp- torns.
