Mr. Eaton has concerns
for the quality of the pro-
grams being offered, fearing
a change in management
would mean less effective
services.
"This is a government
that has talked tough on
crime. Now what they're
saying is we'll create the
problem then pass it off to
the private sector," says Mr.
Eaton.
The change will affect
seven facilities in Hamilton,
Ottawa, London, Oakville,
Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay
and Toronto.
According to Mr. Eaton,
these facilities house danger-
ous offenders who need to be
supervised by professionals.
"These are kids that you
hear about on the news.
These are people that have

this approach is not a new

Provincial reprieve `good news': Durham public school board
Durham boards back to the books on school closures

Parents and trustees are
hopeful the public board
won't have to "rush" into
closing nine schools across
the region thanks to a one-
year reprieve designed to
prevent mass school clo-
sures.
"I think it's good news. 1
think it means we don't have
to rush the decision:' says

made by Ontario Premier
Mike Hams Friday.
In a surprising retreat, the
premier announced his gov-
ernment is increasing the
flexibility of its education
funding formula and inject-
ing roughly $200 million into
the education system to avert
school closures.
During a news conference
in Toronto, Mr. Harris said
no school there "will need to
close as a result of any
changes made by the provin-
cial government."
And. some trustees here
are hoping that means the
public board can delay its ac-
commodation plan.

problems with the funding
formula... this really hadn't
been thought out"
Other initiatives an-
nounced Friday include a "20
per cent operating fund top -
up" that will allow schools
operating at 80 per cent en-
rolment to be funded as
though they were at full ca-
pacity.
The Province will also
offer assistance to analyze
board budgets and operations
and provide recommenda-
tions on how to reduce over-
head and administration and
will adjust the funding for-
mula to account for schools
which have unique architec-
tural features and which
could adversely affect fund-
ing.

Informing public a key aim

The committee formed to in-
vestigate nuclear -related health
issues in Durham should make a
greater effort to communicate
with the public and take positions
on matters which concern resi-
dents.
That was the consensus
reached by the Durham Nuclear
Health as it reviewed its mandate
and role in the community after
two years in existence.
The push for beefing up the
mandate came mostly from com-
mittee member John Stephenson,
a former Ontario Hvdro employee
who's one of three representatives

"The whole thrust of this pro-
posal is to get the Durham Nu-
clear Health Committee (DNHC)
in the position of taking a stand
and putting that information out
to the public," said Mr. Stephen-
son at the meeting held last Fri-
day.
He suggested, and other mem-
bers agreed, the committee has
spent most of its first two years
getting organized and done "very,
very little" in the way of dissemi-
nating information to the public
or municipal politicians.
While Durham residents are
probably not very interested in
the work of the committee most
of the time. noted Mr. Stephen-
son, there is an immediate "high
level of concern" every time
there's a spill or incident at one of
the local nuclear stations. He sug-
gested the DNHC should place re-
ports documenting its findings on
various issues, including any po-
sitions the committee may choose
to take, in public libraries so resi-
dents can get the information
when they do become concerned.
.Mr. Stephenson also suggested
the DNHC should do some of its
own local investigation when pre-
sented conflicting evidence on
nuclear -related health issues, cit-
ing as an example opposing views

Foxes and coyotes are moving into the
urban area due to the amount of passive
parkland and other open space areas.
These animals are very timid in nature and
would only pose a problem if they were
rabid. Foxes and coyotes tend to come into
the open during certain times of the year
such as mitt Fall and early Spring but are
only foraging for flood. These animals are
not likely to make a den in or around your
house, as would a raccoon or skunk, and
therefore are not easy to trap.

neighborhood and you are concerned

ONTARIO LOTTERY CORPORATION
The Ontario Lottery Corporation has made avallabie a
substantial amount of funding to be distnbuted to local
Chanties under the -Advance Funding Program-.

Foxes & Covotcs
Foxes and coyotes are moving into the
urban area due to the amount of passive
parkland and other open space areas.
These animals are very timid in nature and
would only pose a problem if they were
rabid. Foxes and coyotes tend to come into
the open during certain times of the year
such as mitt Fall and early Spring but are
only foraging for flood. These animals are
not likely to make a den in or around your
house, as would a raccoon or skunk, and
therefore are not easy to trap.
If you see a fox or coyote in your
neighborhood and you are concerned
about it, please contact the PAW Anima
Shelter at 427-8737 for more information
about these animas. -

Little ,Sister finds a friend fior...-Iife

Brigitte Buschold feels a set of
eyes locked on her as she sits at her
(kitchen table eating dinner.
She discovers her Little Sister,
sitting at the opposite end of the
table. looking intensely in her direc-
tion. Curious, Ms. Buschold asks if
she has food on her face, but Megan
Kaye -Mitchell insists she doesn't.
"I just realized how lucky I real-
ly am:" Megan. 12, says, to have
Ms. Buschold. 33, for a Big Sister.
In the three years they have been
matched through the Big Sisters As-
sociation of Ajax -Pickering, the re-
ccnt incident at the dinner table is
one of Ms. Buschold's fondest
rnemones.
Their relationship began when
Megan was nine years old and a
`fiery angry" girl, Ms. Buschold
lays. Megan was referred to Big
Sisters because there were a variety
of issues that were affecting her
happiness. Her father was sick, her
two younger brothers needed plenty
of attention and her mother was re-
turning to school full time, which
left Megan feeling somewhat ne-
glected.
She was also being teased at
school by her peers. Megan made an
ideal Little Sister candidate. The or-
ganization matches girls and young
women who are experiencing chal-
lenges in their personal lives, at
home or at school, with a positive
role model who is at least 21 years
old. Ms. Buschold became involved
in the organization because when
she was growing up, the role her
older sister played in her life was in-
valuable. "I am fortunate to have
my older sister," Ms. Buschold says.
"She really led me to where I am
today."
Saturdays arc often reserved for
Megan, even if they just chat on the
telephone. They listen to Spice
Guis, paint each others' fingernails
and play with Devil sticks. Ms.
Buschold recently took Megan to a
Shama Twain concert and hiking
and swimming at a resort in Algo-
nquin Park.
But they don't always make for-
mal plans.
"Megan and I are comfortable
enough just to hang out," Ms.
Buschold says, something that has
happened over time. In the begin-
ning, "it takes a lot of work," Ms.
Buschold remembers.
Megan appreciates having some-
body to seek advice from, in addi-
tion to her mother.
"I would still be getting back at
the people at school who've made
fun of me instead of ignoring them
the way Brigitte and my mom tell
me to do," Megan says. Megan is a
Grade 7 student at Valley View Pub-
lic School and lives in Brougham.
If there comes a point in time
when Megan realizes she no longer
needs a Big Sister, she says she will
continue her relationship with Ms.
Buschold. "1 still want to know
Brigitte and be friends with Brigitte
because she's my best friend."

Ajax -Pickering is able to continue

girls in the community through the

1. You can pay for your purchase by cash, Visa, MasterCard or
personal cheque. Personal cheques will only be accepted with the
back-up of a Visa or MasterCard number.
2. Read the flyer and highlight the TIME, BLOCK and ITEM number
of any merchandise which interests you.
3. TheT.V Auction will begin on Cable 10 at 6 p.m. Saturday
!November 14, 1996 and 1 p.m. Sunday, November 15. 1996.
4. Bidding will begin for each block at the appropriate time indicated
in the flyer. Each Block will begin with pictures and explanations of
the items available in that 1 1 minute period-
s. You can bid on any item that is still to come on both Saturday or
Sunday ..That is, any item in a block that has not already been offered
and closed.
6. Call 90"3--96-6 and one of our volunteer operators will answer.
The operator will ask for your NA-ME,TELEPHONE NUMBER, I TE.N
NUMBER(S) and AMOUNT you wish to bid. All bids must be to whole
dollars with minimum increment of 52.00. Operator will be using call
display to confirm the number calling tn.
7. Our volunteer operator will be monitoring all current bids. If you
arc advised your bid is equal or less than the most current bid, you
will be asked if you wish to improve your bid.
8. You will be able to monitor bids for all items on yourTV for the
current block. If a bid higher than yours appears on the screen,
please call to raic your bid before the block closes.
9. The end of each block will be indicated by a bell and no new bids
will be accepted. However. calls in progress will be completed.
10. Don't wait until the last moment to bid. Your phone call may not
get through. Our phone lines art always quite bus• near the end of
each block. Plav a safe Get involved by biding early.

Ajax -Pickering teams advance to semi-final playoff round

The Ajax -Pickering Dolphins'
atoms and peewees won their way
to the next round of the Central
Ontario Football League playoffs
after victories at Pickering's
Kinsmen Park this past weekend.
The Dolphins' atom squad
completely dominated the visit-
ing Brampton Bulldogs squad,
winning 59-6 in the quarter -final
contest.
The explosive Dolphins' of-
fence was sparked by Joe Dublin,
Paul Leckey and Dan Gazarek
who each scored two touch-
downs. Dan West was good on
five field goals. The team also re-
ceived outstanding defensive per-
formances by Bryant Trotman
and Abi Olusoga who were in on
numerous tackles and Ryan
Rouleau who registered four
quarterback sacks. The entire de-
fensivc squad and the entire of-
fensive squad were the offensive
and defensive stars of the game,
respectively.
Meanwhile, the Dolphin pee-
wees hosted the Oshawa
Hawkeyes in quarter -final playoff
action and the Dolphins respond-
ed with a 30-22 victory.
The game was close at times,
but Dolphins came up strong to
stop an Oshawa uprising in the
fourth quarter. Running back
Justin Malik was unstoppable,
scoring two touchdowns and
gaining many rushing yards.
Quarterback John Komer also
performed well in the pressure
situation. Malik and Komer were
named offensive game stars,
while Tope Olusoga and Kyle
Vandusen were the game stars on
defence.
The Dolphin peewees, atoms
and tykes ended COMFL regular -
season action in Burlington
against the Stampeders on Sun-
day, Nov. 1. The Dolphins lost
two games and tied one.
The Dolphin tykes secured
second place in the league stand-
ings with a 6-6 tic with a power-
house Burlington squad.
The second -place finish meant
Ajax -Pickering would receive a
bye into the semi-final contest
along with home field advantage.
In a true defensive struggle,
neither club could move the ball
effectively in the contest. Ajax-
Pickering's Michael Dearness
snuffed out a potential touch-
down drive by the Stampeders
with an interception late in the
game. Luke Moyer was the tykes'
offensive game star, while Dear-
ness and Huntley Richards shared
game star honours on defence.
The Dolphin atoms lost 40-16
to Burlington. Two touchdowns
by Joe Dublin and two converts
by Dan West weren't enough to
stop Burlington. Dublin was the
offensive game star. Paul Leckey.
Bryant Trotman and Jake Moyer
were all game stars on defence.
The Dolphin peewees faced
one of the top teams in COMFL
in Burlington this season. The
Stampeders dominated the first
half, but Ajax -Pickering buckled
down in the second half and
scored two touchdowns, but had
one called back on a penalty.

The registered nurses and clerical workers of Saint
Elizabeth Health Care, Durham branch, are looking
forward to again providing quality care in the
community after 20 weeks of job action.

Durham College is hosting an information program which features `hands-on'
workshops, demonstrations and information on the wide range of programs
offered at Durham College and the University Centre. There will also be rep-
resentatives from 23 other colleges available to answer questions regarding
programs, facilities and service.
Prospective students of all ages and their families, guidance and employ-
ment counsellors are invited to attend this information program on
Wednesday, November 11 between 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm and Thursday
November 12, 9:00 am - 1:30 pm. Both are conveniently located m the
gymnasium at the Oshawa Campus. There will also be an information session
about the University Centre at Durham, Thursday, November 12 from ':00
pm - 8-30 pm in room 1-110. On Saturday, November 14, 9:00 am - 3.00
pm there will be an Open Hoose at the Durham College Skills Training
Centre. 1610 Champlam Ave., Whitby.
