According to the report "the number of incidents involving physical assault involving staff have increased over the past year." And. Ms. Elliott says that increase has been attributed to .an increase in the number of students who arc more physical- ly aggressive in some of our special needs classes" The report also indicates male students between the ages of 12 and 17 continue to be the age group involved in the majm- ity of incidents. "Certainly boys are involved much more so than girls," Ms. Elliott says. "It's mandatory for our school yards to be supervised before school, at lunch and after school;" Ms. Elliott reports, adding "our teachers do a good job at that:' And while the overall num- ber of violent incidents is drop- ping, Ms. Elliott notes only 71 per cent of students say they feel safe at school. That's something the safety committee will look at, she says, adding the commit- tee is examining the possibility of conducting a student survey to find out why some pupils don't feel safe at school. "I would expect the programs would be the driving force" be- hind the decrease in violent inci- dents at school. Ms. Elliott says, adding "obviously we don't tol- erate any fighting on school property... we don't condone any kind of physical force or fight- ing.- In ight- ing"In fact, Ms. Elliott says the board altered its policy regard- ing off-site incidents last spring and notes if a fight occurs off school grounds, "we would take action." The Durham Catholic District School Board received approval from the Ministry of Education and Train- ing Monday to make up lost instruc- tional time by holding classes during three days of the Christmas break and altering the exam schedule for stu- dents. Board director Grant Andrews met with ministry officials Monday to re- view the board's plan after the Province rejected all of the initial proposals submitted by school boards and teachers' federations in late Oc- tober. Some questions for politicians before boarding the debate Ajax politicians will be asked tomorrow to state their posi- tion on an issue so contentious that their decision could forev- er throw up an invisible wall with neighbouring Pickering. Members of Ajax Council's general government commit- tee will consider at their meeting in Town hall at 2 p.m. Thurs- day whether to endorse a staff report recommending Ajax civic leaders support an airport in Pickering. Urging the elected politicians of Ajax to support the airport is Town economic development associate Alison Sheppard. She writes in her report. " ilhe development of an airport in this area will provide many positive economic benefits to Ajax and Durham Region. One only treed look at the area sur- rounding Pearson Airport to gain an appreciation of the many kinds of development that is attracted to areas in close prox- imity to an airport.- We can't argue with that. Further. Ms. Sheppard notes. " tine new airport would greatly increase the accessibility of this area to world destina- tions and markets. An airport would be a major convenience for both business and individual travellers alike" She's right son. But. then again. she's not accountable to the public. Politicians arc. Before Ajax politkiars go into that meeting tomorrow. there are several questions they should consider: Why the rush to support designation of north Pickering Rads as a future airport site? Transport Minister David Col - k neat has told the News Advertiser that, if an airport is to be built on land expropriated for that purpose by the federal gov- ernment in the early 1970s. it wouldn't be constructed for an- other 15 or 20 years. Pearson Airport has the capacity to ha- te flights until the year 2013, he has said. Even the Greater Toronto Airports Authority. a proponent of runways a Picker- ing. has acknowledged Pearson is big enough to handle pas- senger needs until 2030. If the airport that might be in P ckenng s furore was msaead proposed for Ajax. would Ajax politicians support it? Lincoln Lariviere's newest record- ing, From Newfoundland to Texas, re- leased in Mav on his own record label L & L Records, has been met with suc- cess similar to that of his debut record- ing I've Never Been to Newfoundland, which hit record stores last year. From Newfoundland to Texas was nominated in the international album category at the Lone Star State Coun- try Music Association Awards in Mag- nolia. Texas last month and won the award for best traditional country album. Lanviere wasn't on hand to receive the accolade. but rather it was deliv- ered to him personally in Ajax last Thursday by Bill Allen, the executive director of the Lone Star State music association, who's staying with Lariv- iere and playing several shows in the area. Allen is a second cousin of coun- try music legend George Jones. "I was surprised:' says Lariviene. a native of Nipissing Village. near North Bay. "I never dreamed I'd be putting out a CD. I was planning to get out of country music but Roy Payne (a friend and songwriter on the newest CD) told me to a do a cassette of songs last year which led to a CD this year" Earlier this year. Lariviere garnered three awards for his debut cassette I've Never Been to Newfoundland. He was honoured by the North American Music Association Interna- tional Awards in Gailingburg, Ten- nessee in January with the awards for Best Cassette Album of the Year and Most Promising Mak Vocalist of the Year He wa, al— honoured with a Gold- en B,—N, • ! in appreciation for his dedication to traditional country music in the Toronto area. The new CD (which also has the complete cassette of I've Never Been to Newfoundland on it) is more tradi- tional country which focuses on the people and places across Canada. He laughs when he's compared to Stompin' Tom Connors, another coun- try troubadour who wears the red and white on his sleeve. "I like the music to reflect all the places I've been to, from Nashville to Texas, to Ontario and every place in between," explains Lariviem. One song in particular on From Newfoundland to Texas, called You'll Always Be a Sweetheart to Me, was penned for his wife Bernice and I Re- member Smiley Bates was written about a friend and country musician from Timmins who died of cancer.
