New sulphur standards for
Canadian gasoline announced re-
cently by the federal government
will only provide marginal health
and environmental benefits while
they could hurt consumers and the
oil industry, according to Picker-
ing -Ajax -Uxbridge MP Dan
McTeague.
"We cannot assume the new
leveis will cause only a one -per
cent increase in the price of gaso-
line, - says Mr. McTeague in a
media release responding to the
announcement. ' 7ihe timetable for

PICKERING — Twenty-two
new beds for patients who need
Icing -term care will be opening at
Ro,cebank Villa in Pickering.
The Province announced fund-
ing liar the beds last week.
Rosebank Villa is one of 31 hos-
pitals and facilities in Ontario which
will share $6.6 million in provincial
government funding to open 707
long-term care beds on a transition-
al basis. The beds are intended to
serve as a 'bridgewhile construc-
tion proceeds on an expansion of
Ontario's long-term care facilities,
and will allow seniors currently in
hospital beds across the province to
transfer into long-term care ser-
vices.Minister for Long -Term Care
Cam Jackson is expected to soon
announce the locations for the 6,700
new permanent long-term care beds
to be added during phase one of the
government's expansion plan.

Durham principal hosts'workshop
The benefits of year-round
schooling will be the topic of an
upcoming conference for parents
and educators in Toronto next
month.
The Ontario Association of
School Business Officials
(OASBO) is hosting the first
Canadian conference on vear-
round education Nov. 25 to 27.
And, Jack Smyka, principal of
C. E. Broughton Public School in
Whitby, Durham's only year-
round school, will host a work-
shop about the "dual track experi-
ence in Durham"
The school, which draws stu-
dents from across Durham Re-
gion, began offering a modified
calendar in 1996. However, the
facility also offers classes based
on the traditional school-vear.
"The interest in year-round ed-
ucation is really growing," says
Mr. Smyka, noting enrolment in
C. E. Broughton's program,
which runs from August through
June, increases every year.
The conference will also fea-
ture two keynote speakers includ-
ing Dr. Charles Ballinger, execu-
tive director of the National Asso-
ciation for Year -Round Education
in the United States, who will dis-
cuss the rationale for changing
the time of the school year, and

Nuclear rescue team costs $4 million a year

Ontario Hydro is paying more
than $4 million (Canadian) a year
in 'consulting fees' to American
experts hired in January 1997 to
rescue its troubled nuclear opera-
tions.
That $2.7 million (US) is in ad-
dition to a total of $750,000 (US)
after taxes paid to the team mem-
bers in signing bonuses and the
costs of vehicles, living expenses,
travel expenses, health benefits,
life insurance policies, and even
preparation of personal Canadian
and U.S. income tax returns for
them.
Juicy pension packages will
also go to the U.S. experts when
their contracts are complete in
three years, or four years in the
case of Hydro nuclear division
boss Carl Andognini.
Hydro made public the con-
tracts of the seven team members
Thursday, one day before a court
hearing on a freedom -of -in forma-
tion application made by CTV
News for disclosure of Mr. An-
dognini's salary. The Crown corpo-
ration originally refused the re-
quest, maintaining the information
did not have to be released, as other
public officials' salaries over
$100,000 must be every year, be-
cause the seven were contracted
consultants and not employees.
Hydro also maintained disclosure
would compromise its position in
the competitive electricity market
being established in the province.
The utility said Thursday that
while it was still concerned about
those issues, it was releasing the
contracts "in the interests of full
public disclosure".
Hydro noted its nuclear pro-
gram is the largest in North Ameri-
ca, with the "most extensive" re-
covery effort, and that Mr. An-
dognini's compensation is "in line
with industry standards for senior
executives in similar positions in
the nuclear generation field"

to attract the skills and experience
necessary to effect a successful nu-
clear recovery program," said
Hydro president and CEO Ron Os-
borne.
Hydro maintains the incentive
plans in the contracts reflect com-
mon practice among U.S. utilities
and similar public Canadian com-
panies.
Mr. Andognini. Hydro's execu-
tive vice-president and chief nu-
clear officer, is paid a base consult-
ing fee of $6.50,000 (US) per year,
with annual increases in January
1998, 1999 and 2000 of up to eight
per cent, based on set performance
cfiteria.
In January 2001 Mr. Andognini
is eligible for a 'special long-term
incentive' bonus of up to 100 per
cent of his base annual consulting
fee, if he meets certain perfor-
mance standards.
When he signed with Hydro, he
received a recruitment bonus of
$200,000 (US) before taxes. His
other perks include a Hydro vehi-
cle and driver (with the vehicle
available for personal use), and a
$I -million (US) life insurance pol-
icy.

An Information fair for parents
of special needs children and
youths is being held at the Picker-
ing Recreation Complex Saturday
and Sunday, Oct. 31 -Nov. 1.
More than 60 exhibitors from
across the province will be on
hand to provide information on
new technologies, services, med-
ical care and recreational pro-
grams for children with special
needs.
The event is the first of its kind
in the region and will run from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and I I
a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Slow down for the
sake of the children
Survey shows drivers whistle through
school zones
In these days when provincial
ministers are actually debating in-
creasing the speed on 400 -series
highways, some startling news about
drivers in Durham is troubling.
According to monitoring being
carried out at three school zones
across the region over the past year,
drivers are not obeying the speed
limit as they fly by schools.
The radar study measured speeds
driven near St. Isaac Jogues School
in Pickering, Courtice South Public
School in Clarington and H.W.
Knight Public School in Brock.
While exact numbers aren't available,
radar studies taken on six different
occasions at each school show dri-
vers do not slow down to 40 km/h
when they are required to by law. The
studies also revealed that traffic con-
gestion in each school zones is a scri-
ous problem. The mind reels at cars
lined up along a road, children sprint-
ing out between parked cars as dri-
vers, going way too fast, fly by. It's a
recipe for disaster.
Flashing warnings were installed
at each location on April 1, 1997 but
appear to have had little to no effect
on drivers.
It needs to be said: drivers must
slow down to 40 at a maximum and
should go even slower than that in the
hour when children are either going
into school, going home for lunch or
leaving school at the end of the day.
Cars going 50 km/h or even faster
cannot stop in time if a child bounds
out onto the street or road. Only
tragedy will follow.
The speed limits around school
zones are specifically posted where
they are for a very good reason.
They're in place to protect very
young children. Most parents who
drop their children off or pick them
up at school, understand this. But
everyone must get the message. Po-
lice should rotate radar checks at
schools across the region and slap
tickets on those who fail to slow
down in school zones. And Road
Watch, in the communities where it is
in effect should be especially vigilant
against those who drive recklessly in
school zones. Report had drivers to
police -- repeat offenders will be
dealt with.
Let's not have a terrible tragedy
before we do something to stop
school -zone speeders.

I choose to be called Judith of the Old

The reasons why some people in-
sist on calling me Judy even when my
name is clearly written or stated as Ju-
dith is beyond me. My socialized self
drives me to be polite and spare the
.feelings of others, but when I hear

had the biblical Judith's sword! Evert
when I use lines like: "I prefer Judith,"
or "My friends call me Judiith," some
people still don't gut it. When I say my
name is Judith, I mean it.
I left Judy behind along with my
dolls and roller skates. Think of Judy
Garland .and what comes immediately
to mind? The image of the pig -tailed
Dorothy. Family are the worstm

respecting your chosen name. My
aunt, a senior, would love to be called
anything but her childhood nickname,
Punky. It is difficult to understand why
my elderly cousin Carl is still called
Junior. To perpetuate such names in-
fantilizes them. A Frenchman, Robert,
pronounced Row -bear, cringes every
time his wife's British cousin calls
him Bobby. There are still a few
diehards in my tamily who insist that I

Judith has a graceful sound to it. Judy
sounds harsh and unpleasant.
At the heart of the issue is this: we

a name is hard to pronounce, too long
or too formal, or if you dislike it.
While first names can present prob-
lems, pity the poor souls who must go
through fife with last names which are
difficult to pronounce, or lend them-
selves to humor, like Wawrzkiewicz or
Butt. When I married, I would have
loved to retain my lovely surname,
Noel, but I was very tired of all the bad
jokes, especially during December.
Even as a child, it set my teeth on edge
every time I was hit with Judy Christ-
mas! Remember that the clever joke
you are about to make about some-
one's name has been heard ad nause-
am! The two phrases: "What do you
like to be called?" and "How do you
pronounce your name?' will take you
far. What's in a name? Everything!

A sympathetic ear on the other end of the line

The woman on the other end of the
phone says she wants to die.
In a Flat, monotone voice, she reports
she has written her last wishes, made pro-
visions for her pet and is going to walk
into the lake. It's winter.
The woman's voice is still chilling to
Cheryl Ryan.
"There was no emotion. No tears. She
was determined to die;' recalls Mrs. Ryan.
The Distress Centre Durham volunteer
and trainer has answered many difficult
calls from troubled individuals in the six
years she has worked at the centre. This
two-hour phone call was different.
-The call really stayed with me for a
long time;' Mrs. Ryan says.
"I tried to tell her there must be some-
thing to live for, but the more she said, I re-
ally couldn't see anything. I'd never heard
someone who was so sure (she wanted to
end her life). It was very draining, very
hard. It's very difficult to hear someone
talk like that."
Not all calls to the Distress Centre are
from people threatening suicide.
Volunteers answer calls from lonely
people who just want to talk, individuals in
troubled relationships and people with
mental health problems.
The majority of phone calls are abuse -
related — from victims of physical and
sexual abuse and people troubled by sub-
stance abuse.
The cold, grey months of the year bring
out callers with mental health problems.
The centre receives many "off -the -wall -
calls when there's a full moon.
Approximately 6,000 people call the
Distress Centre in a year. The majority of
callers are women between the ages of 25
and 45.
No matter why the person on the other
end has called the United Way agency, the
volunteers offer a sympathetic car. They
don't give advice, but may refer the caller
to people or agencies who can provide
guidance.
"Our goal is to let the caller know what
their options are. We point out their
strengths and point out the positives in
their life;" Mrs. Rvan explains.
Volunteers take part in two eight-hour
training sessions and work the phones with
i
supervision for four shifts before they are
left on their own.
Mrs. Ryan began volunteering at the
centre because she was taking a human
services counselling course at Durham
College and wanted practical experience in
the field.
When a Distress Centre volunteer re-
ceives a phone call like the one Mrs. Ryan
fielded from the suicidal woman. the vol-
unteer keeps the caller on the line until
help arrives at the distressed person's door.
From January to August of this year, the
Distress Centre had 27 intervention calls,
compared to 17 in 1997.
Nine out of 10 times the caller realizes
he or she needs help and authorizes the in-
tervention. That's when a volunteer is able
to hang up the phone, and they rarely hear
from a caller again. Sometimes, the caller
will phone back to let the centre know how
they're doing.
When the caller phones back to say
"thank you", it makes every minute the
volunteer spent on the phone worth it.

It's a
Iost, empty feeling

Is the Ontario government to blame for
the fact that Durham high school students are
not playing sports this fall? Perhaps.
Are the teachers at fault? Perhaps.
Has the absence of athletics left a void in
the lives of students and teachers alike? Def-
initely.
Buried beneath the ugly politics that have
kept Durham school boards and teachers
from agreeing on a new contract is an unde-
niable truth that has nothing to do with poli-
tics: school sports are being missed.
Students caught in the middle of the
labour dispute certainly stand to lose the
most. Sports are a valuable part of a student's
development and sometimes create scholar-
ship opportunities.
But many teachers, too, are missing the
interaction that comes with coaching young
students outside the classroom. Yes, it is their
choice not to coach, but it is a decision that
most feel is necessary, at least until the
labour dispute is setded.
"Generally, the feeling's just sort of
empty;' says Bill Langley of Port Perry High
School, who has coached high school sports
in Durham for the past 26 years. "It's
strange. At the end of the day, school empties
in 15 minutes"
Known most for coaching basketball,
Langley has also guided students in cross-
country running, football and tennis. He con-
tinues to coach basketball in the community,
but recognizes the importance of providing
sports at school as well.
"I just wish it would get settled — to just
get back into planning something this sport
season"
Physical education teachers, like Langley,
are feeling the pinch most of all. It is they,
after all, who coach teams as though it's sec-
ond nature and they who will probably be the
first back at it when a new contract is signed.
But Bill Dalladay, head of boys' phys-ed
at Dunbarton High School in Pickering, re-
lied on 25 teachers outside his department —
as well as 15 in the department — to help
coach school teams last year.
If, as per education reforms under Bin
160, teachers are going to work seven of
eight classes each day, Dalladay worries
about the coaching commitment in the fu-
ture.
"I know for some of them, that's the last
I've seen of them," Dalladay says of the
teachers outside his department, who gener-
ally need more preparation and marking time
than phys-ed teachers.
Although DAIaday doesn't miss all the
red tape involved in organizing sports and
has no plans to coach again until the labour
dispute is settled, he admits to missing cer-
tain aspects of the extra -curricular activities.
"In a lot of cases, you're just more intense
because you have kids that are willing to take
it to a higher level," says Dalladay, who has
,coached at Dunbarton since 1987 and for 12
years prior at Pickering High School in Ajax.
"When kids leave the halls empty at 3:30,
that's just not easy to take right now," he
adds.
High school coaches, players, miss competition
Angie Ross, an 18 -year-old OAC student
and sports minister at Bowmanville High
School, is one of the many in Durham who
doesn't want to leave the school empty so
early. She is accustomed to staying around at
least until 6 p.m. playing sports such as bas-
ketball, soccer, badminton and, her favourite,
volleyball.
Ross was the female athlete of the year at
the school last year and hopes to play vol-
leyball at the university level when she be-
gins her kinesiology studies next year. Quite
apart from the fact that potential recruiters
can no longer watch her play. Ross simply
misses playing the games.
' lihey make me feel better about myself,"
she says of athletics. "It's like something is
missing from me.
"I miss it dearly" she adds. "I want it
back now"
When asked whether she blames the
teachers or the government for the dispute,
Ross expresses a frustration not uncommon
among students.
-I really don't care;' she says. "I just want
them to talk. I want it resolved:'
Heather LaFontaine, who has coached for
the past seven years at Leo Austin Catholic
Secondary School in Whitby and for 17
years before that at Paul Dwyer Catholic
High School in Oshawa, understands where
the students are coming from.
In fact, for Tania Chappelle, an OAC stu-
dent with great scholarship potential, La-
Fontaine helped find a spot on a premier bas-
ketball team in Scarborough so she could
maintain her skills and continue to catch the
eyes of scouts.
"Obviously, I'm going to do everything in
my power to help them;' LaFontaine says of
the players on the close-knit basketball team
she coached for the previous four years.
"Just coming to school and working with
these gals — I miss that. 1 desperately miss
that.
"It's very difficult on the students and I
appreciate that, but I also think that many of
the coaches are experiencing that same feel-
ing."

Bantam" Lightning struck from medal round
-Durham West girls fifth best at Aeros' event
The Durham West Lightning bantam V
girls' hockey tearn just missed advancing to
the medal round of the North York Beatrice
Aeros Tournament last weekend.
The Lightning played a level above in the
'BB' division and were ' very impressive for
their first two contests but lost the third game
to a strong team from Cleveland. Overall, the
Lightning finished fifth out of 12 squads,
barely missing the four -team medal round.
The Durham West bantams opened the
tourney with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over
arch -rival Mississauga Chiefs. Marianne
Carefoote scored an unassisted goal. with
1:52 remaining. Mary Lawrence recorded
her first shutout in her first start in net in ice
hockey, coming over from drigette.
The Lightning then trounced Team
Michigan from Detroit 5-1. After a scoreless
first period, Team Michigan tallied just 24
seconds into the second frame, which
seemed to spark the Lightning to step up
their game. Only 54 seconds later, Michelle
Damian scared on a picture deflection of a
shot by Jenna Vermeulen. Lauranne Hutton
also got an assist. Markers by Courtney Pud-
dister and Laura Hill gave Durham West a 3-
1 lead after two periods. Meghan Ritchie and
Hill tallied in the third stanza. Assists went
to Carefoote with three, Puddister with two
and Hill with one. Morgan Payne had a
strong game in goal in her first start of the
season.
The Lightning were oudtustled and out-
gunned 3-0 by a strong team from Cleveland
in the third game.

Michelle Damian, Charlotte Dowley, Laura
Hill, Lauranne Hutton, Mary Lawrence,
Stephanie Mourao, Morgan Payne, Courtney
Puddister, Meghan Ritchie, Megan Rocca,

Vermeulen and Anne Marie Williamson.

Tony Damiani, Orlando Mourao, Bob Sim-
monds and Bill Williamson. The trainer is
Roberta Williamson and the manager is Al

PICKERING — The Picker-
ing Boyer Pontiac Panthers were
good, but not good enough to bring
home the title from the annual
Cornwall Junior Showcase this
past weekend.
The Panthers made their first
appearance at the event as one of
only two teams from the Ontario
Hockey Association Ontario
Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey
League to play at the tourney. The
Pickering juniors acquitted them-
selves well, placing first in their di-
vision and advancing to the semi-
finals before bowing out after a 5-
2 loss to the Kanata Lasers, the de-
fending tournament champs the
past two years.
The Panthers jumped out to a 2-
0 lead in the semi-final match, but
couldn't hold the lead. Jeff Milroy
and team captain Bill Duncan
scored for the Panthers.
Panthers' head coach Rod
McGillis was pleased with his
team's effort in the semi-final and
throughout the tourney.
"We were well prepared for it
and we took it to them early. But,
we ended up having a few calls go
against us and they scored some
timely goals. The boys made a
good show of themselves this
weekend"
Panthers' forward Milroy was
named to the all -tournament team
following the Panthers' final game.

He was coming off a leg iiRi ry and
wasn't expected to see much ac-
tion in the tournament, but instead
was one of the dominant players
for the team over the weekend.
McGillis says the Cornwall
showcase gave exposure to Pan-
thers players wanting to move on
to the Ontario Hockey League or
looking for a National Collegiate
Athletic Association hockey schol-
arship. He received numerous
queries from NCAA and OHL
scouts during and since the tourna-
ment.
"We gave the scouts profiles on
our players and they were very in-
terested in a lot of our players. I
talked to at least a dozen scouts
over the weekend and my phone
was ringing off the hook the night
after. Our goal was accomplished
in showcasing the boys to the
scouts. We want to move them on
to the next level"
The Panthers opened the tour-
nament with a dominating 8-1 vic-
tory over the Connecticut Clippers.
In the second game, Pickering
played to a2-2 draw with John Ab-
bott College of Montreal, setting
up a crucial test against the host
Cornwall Colts. The Panthers de-
feated Cornwall 5-2 to qualify for
playoff action.
Scoring for Pickering in the
Cornwall contest were Joel John-
son and Mike Hanna with two
goals each and Toza Crnilovic with
one.

No scoring details were avail-
able for the Connecticut and John
Abbott College games.
Goaltender Joel Cameron was
perfect for the Panthers at the tour-
nament, picking up wins against
Connecticut and Cornwall, while
posting a stingy goals -against av-
erage of 1.5. Paul Guthrie saw ac-
tion in the tie with John Abbott
College and the loss to Kanata.
The Panthers return to league
action with four games in five
nights, beginning Friday when
they travel to Wellington to play
the Dukes. On Saturday night, the
Panthers host the Trenton Sting at
the Pickering Recreation Complex
at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Peter-
borough Trentway-Wagar Bees
come to town for a 7:30 p.m. con-
test. On Tuesday, Nov. 3, the Pan-
thers take on the Legionaires at the
Oshawa Civic Auditorium at 7:30
p.m.

The Panthers have signed 6'3",
225 -pound defenceman Sean Mc -
Morrow. The 16 year old, who
joined the Panthers for the Corn-
wall tournament, played at the
major bantam level with the Don

clinic at Annandale Curling Club
Saturday was a huge success.
Organized by John Thain, the
clinic featured 10 Canadian Curl-
ing Association -certified instruc-
tors teaching both novice curlers
and others who wanted to upgrade
their skills.
A total of 91 curlers took ad-
vantage of the clinic, an increase
from 62 participants last year and
35 the year before.

turnout from the Sunday Night
Mixed League.
Participants were taught the ba-
sics of curling, were given skills
demonstrations and then had lots
of practice delivering and sweep-
ing.
Meanwhile, the first club bon -
spiel of the season is quickly ap-
proaching and is shaping up to be a
competitive affair. The annual An-
nandale Stakes will he held the
weekend of Nov. 13 and 14 and 24
rinks have signed up so far. A max -
imum of 32 mixed teams will each
play three eight -end games in the
bonspiel, recognized as one of the
best around.
In other news, Alex Bianchi is
chairing the committee overseeing
the Provincial Bantam Champi-
onships being hosted by Annan-
dale next February. The tourna-
ment will include eight bantam
boys teams and eight bantam girls
rinks that will play eight -end
round-robin games to determinc
the champions. The draw has been
set with game one slated for Feb.
17 and the finals Feb. 20.
