The Town received a letter from Federal Transport Minis- ter David Collenette Monday announcing the comment peri- od for the designation of the lands for use as an airport has been extended 60 days, to Dec. 31. It's the second extension of the original 30 -day comment period since Mr. Collenwe an- nounced the designation July 23, a quarter-century after the lands were first expropriated for an international airport in 1972. News of the extension came only hours before Pickering Council was to debate its re- sponse to the designation. The Durham Catholic Dis- trict School Board ratified a two-year deal with local mem- bers of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA) that gives educators a two -per cent raise in the first year of the contract and a 1.5 - per cent hike in the following year. The agreement also increases teachers' preparation time from 130 minutes to 150 minutes a week, effective in September, 1999. "We think it's a good deal;" says OECTA Durham elemen- tary president Mike O'Connor. "We ratified last week with a 99 -per cent vote... it was a pretty strong indication by the teachers that they thought it was a good deal" The Durham District School Board also ratified a two-year collective agreement that gives teachers a 1.5 -per cent raise retroactive to Sept. 1, 1998 and an increase in preparation time to 135 minutes from 120 a week, effective September BILI. Pickering advanced to the final against host Peterborough, but the Same was called due to fog and poor ice conditions. The bantam Panthers advanced to the final with an exciting come -from - behind 5-4 s iciory over Belleville in the semi-final tilt. Pickering trailed 4 - with a little more than six minutes to play in the third period. David Hughes scored from Mike Dawson to narrow the gap to one goal, then Jonathan Walsh tallied from Trevor Small and Mark Rogers it) knot the game at 4-4. In the second stanza, Richard Carey notched a goal, assisted by Domingo. Chris Lovering added two more goals, both assisted by Chris Macleod, and one by Matt Yarmoluk.
