Meeting Mandela DURHAM STUDENTS By Linda White Statt Writer For thousands of Durham stu- dents who attended 'Mandela and the Children' in Toronto Friday. listening to the world-famous free- dom fighter will be a memory they will always cherish. It was particularly memorable for 55 students of St. Monica Catholic School in Pickering, who participated in a children's choir of 4()() and sang several songs for South African President Nelson Mandela and his wife Graca Machel. And Hussam EI Khazen of Ajax was among 25 people selected to meet President Mandela. An active member of the Town's race rela- tions committee, he was presented an award by former Lieutenant Governor Lincoln Alexander earli- er this year. Ahout 3?(X) students from Durham's public and separate school boards attended the event at Sk,.Domc. the cost of which was picked up by the federal and provincial governments, as well as numerous organizations. Forcingteachers back won't resolve issues: Parent MPP SAYS SCHOOL BOARDS, UNIONS WILL BE 4ENCOURAGED' TO CONTINUE T.-\L.KS By Susan O'Neill 5ta" Wrter The Province's hark -to -work le,nslation may get teachers and students back into the classroom but there's some concern it will leave the underlying problems in the ongoing labour disputes unre- solved. " I really don't know if it's go- ing to do any good;' says Ajax par- ent Heather Gilbert, who fears there will still be a great deal of "hostility" between all the parties involved. "What is the teaching going to be like in our classrooms'? It con- cerns me quite a bit," she says. If all three polit- ical parties support the legislation, classes could start as early as Tues- day. But if the Liberals and the NDP stall the process, students might not see the inside of a school until Oct. 7. Durham Centre MPP Jim Fla- herty reports the government re- leased the bill to the opposition parties on Friday --to review over the weekend...in the hope students can eo back to school on Tuesday." The Labour Minister notes the legislation applies to nine school boards involved in strikes or lock- outs across Ontario and says teach- ers will be "ordered back to work according to the schedules that the boards have in place" Mr. Flaherty also notes school boards and unions will be "encour- aged" to continue negotiations and can choose to send unresolved matters to an arbitrator. Both the Durham District School Board and the Durham Catholic Dis- trict School Board have asked the gov- ernment to intervene and order teach- ers back to work. The quake occurred around 4 p.m. and was reported to measure 5.4 on the Richter scale by the University of Westem Ontario, which operates its own seismic network. It was felt as far east as Oshawa. L1 S 21-15 A D V E R T I S E R Publisher: Tim Whittaker EDITORIAL OUR VIEWS ON THE NEWS Tory class action not final solution It's time for our teenage children to be back in class where they belong. Thev and we have been exposed for far too long to the new 3Rs that seem to have replaced reading, writing and arithmetic historically at the forefront of our education system. Enough already of the rancor. rhetoric and railing from the three sides in the dispute that's kept our high schools closed for three weeks after they were to open — the provin- cial government, the school boards and the teach- ersunions. Back -to -work legislation being introduced by the Progressive Conservatives at Queen's Park- Monday arkMonday seems at this time to be the only way of ending the teachers' strikes and board lockouts that have prevented our teenagers from starting this school year. It's not a solution to the problem di- viding the three parties that all claim to be putting our kids first. But, those parties have proved them- selves incapable of coming up with a real solution. So. the Tories have no choice but to wield the hammer that is back -to -work legislation. If the op- posing parties at Queen's Part: side with the gov- emment, our children could be back in class by Tuesday. But, if the Liberals and :view Democrats block passage of the legislation, our kid~' endless summer could extend to Oct. 7. The brownie points that the Grits and the NDP might win from the tewhers if they fight the Tories on this one may Nell bL w iped out at the polls in the next provincial election by parents already upset their youngsters' education has been disrupted for a second straight school vear. Besides, the teacher have alreadv vowed to work for the Conservatives' defeat in the next election. That's where some teachers will devote much of their energy in the next little while — not in the classroom or on extra -curricular activities. Unfor- tunately. it will be the student` who will suffer again. But, many teachers — the dedicated ones — w III continue to put kids first. If the parties in this dispute truly want to put kids first, they can continue toward that lofty goal after the teachers are back in class, even if the educators are forced to work against their will in conditions they see as less than favourable. Legislation forcing an end to the teachers' legal stn-ke and some boards' lockouts is only a tool to get the school year started. Negotiation by the provincial government, the school boards and the teachers' unions is the only solution to fixing what's wrong with our education system and putting kids first. To respond to this editorial call kn_,Onso_ Infosource at 683-7040 and dial 5112 LETTERS OUR READERS' VIEW'S ON THE NEWS Lucky to be alive To the editor: I'm writing in response to letter writer Knud Wall who thinks 'Durham officers need dnver's education'. Let's set the record straight. At 3:15 a.m. a person called 911 to report some- one was trying to break into their house while they were in it. Numerous police cars made their way to the high-priority call. Constable Colin Goodwin and my- self were in one of three police cars northbcund on Westney Road near the Hwy. 401 underpass. Tlx transport truck was in the left lane. Const. Gcxxd- win and I were attempting to pass the truck in the right lane. When our cruiser was at the rear of the trailer, the truck turned right, blocking the lane com- pletely. This left mere seconds for us to react prior to the collision. We're alive today because we were weaning plenty of safety equipment and we had tons of luck. The truck dnver was even more for- tunate. He was not injured, almost killed two people, demolished a $40,000 car and removed two officers from patrol duties for up to eight months. For this he received a $105 ticket. As for police driver training, it's ex- cellent. Officers are taught to drive in different weather/road conditions while operating emergency equipment and to consider all the facts involved in re- sponding to a crime to help deterntine whether to break the speed limit How fast would you like the police to come if you were calling? Mr. Wall also complains of being cut off by a police car while on his bicycle. I won't comment on his particular inci- dent, not knowing the fact%, I have a problem with cyclists who expect to get the sarin: consideration as an automobile. which is about eight to 10 times larger and therefore more visi- hle. Bikes am much more vulnerable and hard to see than cars so cyclist' should not only drive for their own safe- ty but also be considerate of everyone on the road. Mr. Wall says, "It's about lime some- one paid attention to how police officers drive" I agree. if people did pay more attention to how police, firefighters and ambulance crews drive, emergency ve- hicles wouldn't have such a problem navigating through traffic. There is no need to panic and cause an wcident when you see or hear an emergency %c- hicle. Safely pull to the curb and stop. As for Mr. Wall's statement that po- lice should take notice of how most cit- izens drive, bear that in mind if you are stopped for a traffic violation. There's been lots of attention recent- ly to incidents involving collisions. Whether it be police pursuits, red-light runners or even road rage, keep in mind that these are not accidents. LETTERS Teaching is about nurturing youngsters To the editor: Regarding the Sept. 9 editorial headlined 'Teach- ers should be in class with students': Should high school education be about produc- ing better "products" (students) in the most cont -el'- ticient manner by implementing a shiny new pro- duction process (new curriculum) that gets the job done tor the least amount of money in the least amount of time with the fewest possible production workers (teachers)? Sounds suspiciously like the Tory government's agenda fi)r education. Few people understand that teaching is primarily about building relationships with students, not about graduating another cog through the system. If' a teacher does not take the time to show a genuine in- terest in and care for the student, that student may notsucceed. Any high schoxrl teacher would currently be faced wbo ith about 90 such student% over the averse of three perio &,; in a semester. In addition to preparing for each of those three periods and marking students on their progress, a teacher will often also phone home, talk to guidance counsellors or a youth work- er about why certain students are truant or always seem tired or depressed. Why? Because they care about students, not just about the success of students and how that reflects on the almighty mark. The\ care about students as people. If they didn't take the time to do such things in their prep time, chances are very gcxxd that many students would never show up since they don't have the feeling that anyone cares. Tho: fact that someone cams is what makes many show up at all, and the: people who show that care are the teachers. Curriculum won't happen at all if students don't show up, and that is why the "rela- tionship" aspect is so important. Raising the number of perio &% teachers teach from three to four per semester means the teacher is now responsible for about 120 students. Any time to prepare during the day or mark or record progress for these four periods? Afraid net. Any spare mo- ment to find out why a student is not attending or is having trouble concentrating? Don't think so. Am time to check out a student's family crisis with the social worker? Guess not. Only time to grab a lunch and otherwise teach four straight classes. 'Mink of a parallel situation with a doctor. Would a doctor see even 90 patients in a oday, let alone 120:' Highly doubtful: 9 to 5 office hours at 15 minutes per patient means 32 patients if the doctor takes no lunch and takes no time to take records for each pa- tient. Record keeping'? Sounds like prep time to me — keeping track of patient progress. Are doctors paid for this and is this considered part of their "doc- toring" time'? You bet, and it's required by law. (Just like "teaching" time. How can you teach without prep work? It's part of the job and required by the Education Act.) Would it make sense to force a doc- tor to see 30 per cent more patients in a day and take away any time for the doctor to make records of the patients' progress? Would the doctor probably do a much poorer job if he was forced to do this? Would this result in the doctor finding it much harder to give sufficient personal attention to each patient? Do people appreciate the importance of that point? It would appear not. They seem willing to let the government destroy that most crucial and fragile relationship between student and teacher that is fos- tered by keeping the number of periods taught at three, not four. Instead of pushing for great curricu- lum and better graduating widgets, maybe people should put more importance on the development of a caring and nurturing classroom environment, which is what the teachers are striking for in at- tempting to preserve a maximum of three periods taught per semester. If the teachers don't fight for it, who will? Terry Hart, Ajax A/P THE NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27,19" - PAGE 7 J aking the Mage... They're out there working behind the scenes. Group organizer Karen Wright says "it's very unfor- tunate" the board will not al- low parents to use schools to teach students themselves, adding "it's being handled very well in York Region" where parents are using schools to teach elementary students during the strike there. While the group was in- formed Tuesday it would not be allowed access to schools this week, the Pickering mom reports approximately 20 stu- dents and parent volunteers went to Pine Ridge anyway in Fast -Line Entertainment Presents 14ITS FOR BRAINS J r J E, Professiorw] Disc Jockey Service dccadea ti = Days (905) 618-0350 Evenings (805) 4274665 Fax (905) 619-0352 Tom Saull the hope they could use class space for instruction. Believe me, it's not like an appendectomy "Have you had your hypass operation'"' and -How are you doing'.'- I've had a massive re- sponse from readers asking these questions. But I've delayed writing about my experience as a pa- tient so I could sit back, re- flect on it, and provide a more rational answer. Well I'm a bit scarred. So I won't win a beauty contest' But I'm grateful to be alive and well. First, the humorous side to the surgery. My operation was scheduled on a Thursday morning, the same day my column appears in a Toronto newspaper. Early that day on our way to the hospital I casually asked my wife to bring me a copy. She agreed impatiently. sug- gesting that I get my priorities in order! Later that afternoon as I emerged from anesthesia I opened my eyes to see my wife standing at my hedside. She claims the first thing I said was, "Did you bring the newspaper:'" Luckily she has a sense of humour and is still living with me. Many readers have written, asking, "Did you approach the surgery with apprehension'" You bet I did. Primarily because I had witnessed many bypass opera- tions. I had no illusions about what surgeons were going to do to my body' I also knew the statistics. That there is a one to four per cent chance of dying depend- ing on your health. And I had read a report in the New Eng- land Journal of Medicine showing the risk of stroke could he as high as seven per cent. Nly surgeon insisted I was in good shape and my risk was less than one per cent. Not being a surgeon would have made life a lot easier. But at least I knew that Dr. Tirone David, one of the world's best cardiovascular surgeons, was performing the surgery. That made me sleep better. I assumed I'd have consid- erable pain after such an iw a - sive procedure But to my sur- Health prise I had relatively little need for painkillers during my hospital stay. GM recently raised $3,300 through its gate collection for the Leukemia Research Fund of Durham Region. This event has been organized by Leeta Vinson for the last five years, nightmares I had not expected such intense post-operative fa- tigue. It became my primary problem, in part due to ane- mia. But as a type A personal- ity I found this constant weariness extremely frustrat- ing. A very impatient patient! Having gone through this traumatic experience one thing continues to amaze me. The current blase attitude of the public about bypass surgery. Today many people speak casually of bypass surgery as if it's an appendectomy. Be- lieve me, it's no appendecto- my! Patients and families know that thousands of bypass oper- ations are done every year. That most patients recover and lead active lives. And the fact that patients are discharged from hospital in four or five days tends to de-emphasize the seriousness of the surgery. It's not the purpose of this column to worry patients. But take my word. this is a com- plicated and potentially haz- ardous operation. The miracle is that so many patients sur- vive it. Many people were sur- prised when they learned of my illness. They said, "Why did this happen to you? You're not obese. you lead an active life. play tennis and you don't smoke." I also didn't suffer from di- abetes or hypertension. And was rarely ill. I've already taken vitamin E, C and the B vitamins for years, all helpful in fighting coronary disease. But I wasn't lily white. 1 did enjoy french fries and gravy! Most likely my Waterloo was grey hair and genetics. Nl,v mother had a coronary at about the same age. I men- tioned in an earlier column she lived on until 93. The great tragedy is that many bypass operations are not performed because of old age and genetics. Rather, they're the result of bad habits that could and should he cor- rected. Prior to surgery I needed an angiogram to assess the status of my coronary arteries. A 55 - year -old woman nearby also waiting for the procedure was crying. Not knowing anything about her I tried to reassure her. Later a doctor told me she had had two previous angio- plasties to open coronary ves- sels and one previous bypass. Now she was awaiting another bypass. With some impatience he commented, "Can you believe it, she is still smoking'?" In retrospect I should have taken a baby Aspirin. every day starting at about 55 years of age. There's ample evidence that this helps to keep the blood oiled and decrease the risk of coronary attack. Why didn't I do it? I hate to admit it, but it seems I'm not perfect. I thought I was Super- man! And what idiot following a bypass operation would open his eyes, look up at his wife and say, "Did you pick up the newspaper!" v. , , .t•. +. .1.:II C -i::; 1.. i i. t,. 1 L•.i, it PAGE 16 -THE NEWS ADVERTISEWUXBRIDGE TRIBUNE SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1998 :T5;T unw,_ 27 133rom T: Effects of lifestyle on your hearing By Lila O'Neill, Audiologist, M.Sc Aud (C) Research shoss,s that age not only affects your hearing, but so does your lifestyle. Public high school teachers in Durham have been on a legal strike since Aug. 21, leaving ap- proximately 21,000 pupils with a lot of spare time on their hands. But that could end soon with news on Thursday afternoon the provincial government would move to order teachers hack into photo by Susan O'Neill Meagan Miron (left) and Teri Smith brought their concerns to the street in Pickering this week. There were only two of them but, as Teri notes. 'we're getting our message across'. As for Teri and Meagan, they picked up some textbooks from their school earlier in the week, but received no course outlines and didn't know where to start. "You don't know what to read. ' says Teri, who reasons any- thing they do cover on their own time will likely be reviewed in the classroom anyway. So the two decided holding a protest outside their school would be "better than sitting at home all day doing nothing:' says Teri, who's hoping to start Grade 10 soon. "Our summer was long enough. After awhile you just get annoyed and bored. "There are only two of us but we're getting the message across:* she says. "It's a really good feeling:" adds Meagan, who reports the two are receiving a lox of support tTom passing cars and are count- ing the number of honks as dri- vers pass by. -So many people are support- ive:' says Ter, who notes some teachers on the picket line had even stopped by to say they sup- ported the students' efforts. NEWS P v A IDLE TRIBUNE SUNDAY, SF.P'rEMHER 27. 1 •l="Lo1I1_ "Wills, Willingness and Will Power" (NC)—People seem to agree that having a will is a good idea. As they say, "The sands of time are marked with good intentions - and with wills that were never quite fin- ished." Making a will is some- thing we all know we should do but often put aside until it's t(,o late. Sometimes we begin the process but then don't fin - i -h it. The will is written but not signed. Actually, when it comes right down to it, no one dies ,without a will. The govern- ment has seen to that. The province in which you live has •.vritten" a generic will that stipulates how your estate ,. ill be dispensed it we fail to do this yourself. if you have no will, you r: -rfeit the right to choose how .your property will be distrib- uted. The court will decide for % IU in accordance with provincial law. The problem is, the goy- ,-rnment does not know vuur individual priorities and con- cerns. Whatever the reasons, the lack cif a will can have painful consequences. Heirs can experience needless expense and emotional dis- tress. Opportunities are lost to express your values and con- victions through special Your WI,IG, Your way- bequests ay bequests to your tavourite health charity. Fortunately, preparing a clear and concise ;will is not difficult. in less time and with less expense than you think, you can have the satisfaction of knowing that you have ensured your wishes are respected and honoured, that you have eased the wav for those you love. Some people think they don't need a will if their home and investments are in joint tenancy, and their spouse and children are named as benefi- ciaries of their life insurance and pension benefits. However, they are mistaken in believing joint ownership altogether solves the problem of not having a will. Also, if a husband and wife were to die as a result of a common disaster, and nei- ther had a will, both would have died intestate (the legal term for people with no will), necessitating court appointed executors and guardians (if they left minor children), additional expense,, delays and divisions of property by provincial law. in demonstrating will power and writing a will, you exercise a fundamental right to chucse what do with the accumulations of a lifetime. Otherwise, you could even unintentionally disinherit those you want to help. For example, an asset you intend- ed to divide equally among all your children could instead be passed entirely to one of them because, years ago, it was placed in joint tenancy with that child and is therefore beyond the scope of your will. Wearing dentures is often a source of discomfort for those with little or no gums left from resorption (shrinking). Consider the difficulty involved in chewing when the loose denture is causing abra- sions on the gums. As a result, not only the patient's comfort, but their quality of life can be adversely affected. . Fortunately; advancements in oral implantology is to the Point that it can very sat- isfactorily remedy the major problems that result from loose den- tures. An implant is an abutment (support) made of titanium, which has the property of adhering permanently to bony tissue. The tech- nique was developed by s a Swedish orthopedist, Dr. Branemark, and has been used successfully since 1965. The insertion of the oral implants are usually performed under local anesthetic by a den- tal surgeon_ Although the thought of having dental surgery is not a pleasant one, the procedure is rel- atively painless. The cost of over- dentures on implants is not generally covered by insurance. However, this investment in your quali- ty of life is tax deductible, and therefore more affordable that it might seem at first glance. There is also no G.S.T. or P.S.T. applied on any dentures. Speak to a denturist to find out if implants are for you. Your case will be carefully evaluated with the rest of the dental care team to assure that your implant supported den- ture welll give you years of comfort. For more informa- tion on implant support- ed dentures, or any of your denture concerns -- contact vour nearest den- turist. (All information 11 provided by the Denturist Association of Canada).
