'PAGE 6 - THE NEWS ADVERTISERFRIDAYt SEPTEMBER 11111, 119E A Metroland Community Newspaper published four times weekly on OPINION Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday 130 Commercial Ave., Ajax, Ont. L1 S 21-15 A 0 V E R T I S E R Publisher: Tim Whittaker EDITORIAL OUR VIEWS ON THE NEWS How low can they go In spite of the playground massacre which took place several months ago in the United States, the provincial government has turned a blind eye and decided that I2 - year -olds should be able to use firearms. Recall the four students and teacher who were gunned down by a 13 -year-old and his 1 1 -year-old pal. The two had grown up in Arkansas hunting in the woods with their fathers from a very young age. One day this past spring, they decided to break into a parent'sgun cabinet, pull a fire alarm at the school and then calmly shoot away as stu- dents and teachers exited the school. What's of concern here is the direction in which the To- ries are headed. In spite of public opinion polls which show a huge majority of Canadians favour more strict control of guns and more severe constraints on their use, the government has brought a whole new, and very young, constituency into the picture. A snap poll by the Toronto Star done the day after the initiative was announced earli- er this week drew a whopping 3,107 calls with 2,336 or 76 per cent against allowing 12 -year-olds to use guns. Just 24 per cent of callers, or 77 1. favoured the new measure. Those numbers parallel most polls taken over the last decade which show close to 80 per cent of Canadians want more controls, not less, placed upon the use of guns. The use of a gun for hunting should be restricted to adults. Certainly, young adults, those at least 16 years of age, should be taught to be responsible when handling a firearm, however, there is no reason to allow children — and that's what 12 year-olds are — the use of weapons which can kill. What's most ironic are the many other age limits placed on people in our society if they want to partake in 'adult' activities. Children 15 -and -under am not legally al- lowed to drink or purchase alcohol, are not allowed to use or purchase tobacco, cannot drive cars, cannot vote, can- not quit high school, cannot collect welfare or employ- ment insurance, cannot sign legal, binding contract.%, can- not join the armed forces and the list goes on and on and on. There's a simple reason for all these rules: until a per- son reaches the age of 16, he or she is viewed as incapable of adult decisions and the consequences, which frequent- ly impact on other innocent people. Why change the rules for gun use? Yes, under the new regulations 12 -year-olds are re- quired to be under the supervision of someone 18 -or -older and are not allowed to own guns. But, out in the woods on a hunt, isn't there a chance a 12 -year-old could get sepa- rated from his parent or mentor and then what? Chances are, nothing tragic will happen, but the odds of a deadly accident certainly increase when you put a glut in a child's hands. The is a bad law and the Tories will have blood on their hands should it backfire. LETTERS, OUR READERS' VIEWS ON THE_ EWS Where are the improvements to education? To the editor: I have taught for 31 years in the Durham public school board and have thoroughly enjoyed teaching with all its quirks and foibles. 1 love teaching teenagers-, they can be so invigorating and stimu- lating. But I am not sure that 1 want to continue with the current mess that is the Ontario education system, circa 1998. Last year, I had six classes with 166 students. If I have seven classes this year, I will likely be teaching 190 to 195 students. Education Minister Dave Johnson said he wants me to spend more time in the class- room. What he failed to say was that he wants me to prepare for, 'teach, evaluate and mentor more students, not spend more time with the students I already love to teach. Where exactly are the much - vaunted improvements in quality education served by this terribly sad and wrong-headed approach? The News Advertiser accepts letters to the editor. All letters should be typed or neatly hand-written, 150 words. Each letter must be signed with a first and last name or two initials and a last name. Please include a phone number for verification. Death penalty will deter killers To the editor: When are the federal Justice minister and all those Liberal bleeding hearts in Ottawa going to realize that capital punishment for premeditated murder will make a person stop and think twice be- fore committing a murder'! If we would have had this law in place, many innocent victims of violent crime, including William Hancox and Jennifer Co- pithorn, could very well be alive today. I am convinced our justice sys- tem has lost touch with reality. Do they not comprehend the pain and suffering of the victims of crime'? Have they no conscience? And if back -to -work legislation is what it's going to take to get teachers and students back into Ontario's schools, then perhaps it's time fir the provincial government to get moving. The thousands of pupils across the province who have already missed two weeks of instruction can't afford to lose out on class time any longer lt's a positive sign that negotiations are continu- ing between the Durham District School Board and local members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) this week. And there's no question that a negotiated end to the strike would be preferable. But in many regions, negotiations are going nowhere, leaving frustrated parents, students and school txxv s calling for the- govermnent to impose - settlements. Here in Durham discussions between Catholic high school teachers and the scpcirate board hair reached an impasse and earlier this week separate school boards across Ontario, including the Durham Catholic District School Board, asked the Province to intervene. Barring any sudden breakthroughs in talks, it seems legislation is the only alternative. But, Education and Training Minister Dave Johnson has said back -to -work legislation is a "last resort" And, he reports, it could take another three weeks to legislate educators back to work, even if the Legislature is recalled before MPPs' scheduled Sept. 28 return. 'Brat's too long for the current situation to con- tinue. Mr. Johnson admits to being "fed up" with the current labour strife across Ontario but says he won't legislate teachers back until the Education Relation, Commission declares the x:txol year to be, "in jeopardy". Traditionally that has taken up to five weeks to occur. And while the minister has vowed not to inter- vert: in negotiations, which he says need to be reached locally, his untimely comments have dis- rupted talks on several occasions over the past weeks. The minister backed off on the definition of in- structional time last week, giving school boards and teachers some room to manoeuvre on that issue. But the PR move hasn't helped the situation in Durham, or in many other regions across Ontario. The negotiating parties have been given some flexibility on the issue of what constitutes teaching time, but there's no funding to back it up. With the government's new funding formula, the ministry has financed school boards at a level that doesn't allow teachers to continue with the same workload they had last year. School boards don't have the money to hire more teachers to allow educators to continue instructing six of eight class- es. And while a negotiated settlement may be the best kind, at this point anything that gets students and teachers back into schools, whether that be ar- bitration or legislation, is worth looking at. Mr. Johnson either needs to cough up more money to put more teachers into Ontario's class- rooms, or legislate educators back to work so stu- dents can start school this September. Meanwhile, the future of education as fellow high school instruc- contract talks are continuing today. Drivers brush peaceful pickets Pickets at high schools and school board offices in Durham are behaving peacefully, police say. Durham Regional Police Sergeant Jim Grimley says while officers have been called to sever- al picket lines at secondary schools, there haven't been any major incidents during the course of the strike by public board teach- ers and the lockout of separate board educators. Sgt. Grimley reports there was a "very minor" accident near the Durham Catholic District School Board's headquarters on Rossland Road in Oshawa Tuesday but "it wasn't really related to the picket line" A driver was rear-ended at a nearby intersection after trying to turn into the Catholic education centre, he says. "There have been some com- plaints about (teachers) being brushed by cars:' Sgt. Grimley says. But, no one has been injured. "Several drivers have been spo- ken to regarding the procedure to approach and drive through picket lines:' he adds. Members of the public are re- minded not to use their car to push teachers out of the way when crossing a picket line. Talks are continuing today be- tween the Durham District School Board and its striking high school teachers. Contract negotiations re- sumed between the two parties this week after discussions broke off Sept. 6. Teachers also met with the board Tuesday and Wednesday in an attempt to resolve the strike which began Aug. 21. Negotia- tions were not held Thursday. For updates on the strike situ- ation call the board's information line at 666-5541, 686-2711 or 1- 800-265-3968. Sunday Fox run poignant reminder for cancer survivor By Lkda MM Staff Writer For a 22 -year-old woman wlx) successfully battled the same type of cancer that claimed the life of Terry Fox, the annual run to raise money for cancer research is a re- minder the disease can be beaten. R has been 10 years since Christy Love represented Pickering as a member of Terry's Team at the town's first run. Though she wasn't able to join other runners, she col- lected pledges and watched the run from a hot air balloon tethered to the ground. "It was a little overwhelming for a 12 -year-old," admits Miss Love, who attended Frenchman's Bay Public School. "I remember it being a neat experience'. The Pickering High School ,graduate had been diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, the same type of bone cancer that forced doctors to amputate most of Terry Fox's leg. She underwent three rounds of chemotherapy before undergoing surgery to remove a malignant tu- .mour below her left knee, followed by another three rounds of chemotherapy. "She had no hair and had to wear a brace from her hip to her tee," recalls her mother Helen Love of Pickering Village. "Walking was difficult for her." .Mrs. Love still finds it difficult CHRISTY LOVE Member of Terry's Team in 1978 realizes importance of Terry Fox Run after her bout with cancer. to talk about that period in her fam- ily's life. "It's still difficult to think about those days.' Since her daughter's involve- ment in the walk, the annual event has "become more of a celebra- tion, believes Mrs. Love. `"litat's good" because it reflects advances in research and many success sto- ries. Miss Love has recently graduat- ed from the University of Guelph with a biochemistry degree and is completing a co-op term at a labo- ratory in Alliston. She will soon be- gin working at a pharmaceutical company in north Toronto. She participated in last year's Terry Fox Run while at school in Guelph and remembers it was "strangely emotional". As she walked with two roommates, she watched someone whose leg had been amputated run by. "It was likely he had the sante type of cancer I had and I remember it was strange seeing someone who had fought it and won. It was emo- tional. For a lot of people who sur- vive cancer, they blend back into society and it's not obvious they've even had cancer." Admittedly, Miss Love believes she has grieved more in recent years than she did when she had cancer. "I don't think you can fully grieve when you're 12 years old;' she ex- plains. "It's been an ongoing griev- ing process for me and I've thought of it as I've met other challenges." And while she "thought about cancer every day" for many years, it was only recently that she realized she thinks of it less often. The Marathon of Hope dates back to 1980, three years after them 18 -year-old Terry Fox lost his leg to bone cancer: He was so affected by the suffering of other cancer pa- tients that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for research. During his Marathon of Hope, he ran an average of 26 miles a day for 143 days until he was forced to stop due to a return of cancer. He died in June 1981. He would have turned 40 this year. Today, the Terry Fox Run has bet, orne the largest single -day fund- raising event for cancer research in the world. More than one million participants gather at an estimated 4,800 run sites in 60 countries around the world. Last year's Marathon of Hope: collected $14 million from around the world. "Terry would be proud of the great strides cancer research has made in the 18 years since his Marathon of Hope," Darrell Fox, national director of the Terry Fox Foundation created in his brother's honour, says in a press release. In Pickering, Sunday's Terry Fox Run is once again sponsored by the Canadian Progress Club and .Picketing -Ajax Women and begins at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex on Valley Farm Road.
