Alex de Lint is nearing com- pletion of a 16 -foot -long model of the ship Titanic using 90,000 pieces of Lego. It is two -and -a - half feet wide and about four feet high and is being constructed on a large piece of wood in his fami- ly's garage. The 12 -year-old says he was inspired to build a model of the Titanic because "it's a very fa- mous shipwreck and we've heard so much about it." For the past few months, he has spent most weekdays working on it and has taken week- ends off. "It doesn't seem like it's taken a long time;" admits Alex, who'll he going into Grade 7 this fall. He planned how big the model would be, but says he had difficulty esti- mating how many pieces of Lego he'd need. This isn't the first project Alex has undertaken, but it is the largest. He's already built an opera house which used 30,0)0 pieces of Lego and a cruise ship. Both have been dismantled be- cause of the cost of Lego needed to build each one. "This is the first one I've mod- elled on something that exists," Alex says of the Titanic model, which is very detailed and uses about $2,000 worth of Lego pieces. His parents are hoping a company or community group will purchase it for a display. Alex expects the project will be complete shortly after school begins. He doesn't know what he will build next, but is looking for- ward to spending more time on his other interests, which include music and tennis. As for the future, Alex plans to continue enjoying all subjects, but doesn't rule out a career in archi- tecture or engineering. Doug Chambers of SENES answered some of the criticisms which have been levelled at the re- port by explaining it was only in- tended as a compilation of the infor- mation available so far, not as a sum- mary of all the environmental effects of the station. "You have to start somewhere," said Mr. Chambers. "We take that as a benchmark and move forward from that point" He also noted some of the infor- mation criticized as lacking, on is- sues such as contamination path- ways into the environment, is pro- vided in other studies and docu- ments referenced in the report. Working group members raised a number of concerns about the docu- ment's findings, which are to be ad- dressed in later stages of the envi- ronmental review. "We don't know what's happen- ing:' saysseven-year year veteran correc- tions officer John Hickey. "It could mean a fellow officer is in trouble, a fire, or a myriad of things.' It was also the first time he was forced to intervene and help subdue an inmate in the act of attacking another offi- cer. "-There's no question we cater to a totally diverse clientele,' he says. Downsized out of a long -held po- sition with a major ret:ul chain, Mr. Hickey, now in his 50h, never imag- ined he would be working in a max- imum -security jail, alongside some of society's outcasts. You have to pay the mortgage somehow•, he says, and after answering an ad for correction officers in a newspaper, he was off to a five-week training programme. Built in 1957, the Whitby Jail is a three-floxr facility with 128 beds, 10 of which are reserved for female "of- fenders" or accused. The unassum- ing building next to the GO Transit station is primarily a remand centre, temporarily housing those awaiting court appearances; the average length of stay at the facility is about 20 days and it caters to people ac- cused of everything from impaired driving to murder. Probing cameras, mounted along harrow passageways, vividly stand out against the pale grey walls and ceilings. Jingling keys, voices and slamming cell doors hauntingly echo throughout the facility. At the back of the building is the recreation yard. From a third -floor perch inmates look small, tiny in fact, when stand- ing next to the compound's 40- to 50 -foot retaining walls, deterring at- tempts by offenders to bid farewell to their government -paid hosts. A black net draped over the entire compound serves as a catch-all for any contraband, drugs, alcohol and now cigarettes, that could otherwise find its way into the facility. Even Alison Gendron has main- tained a level of empathy for some of the offenders and their unfortunate circumstances despite her 19 years as a corrections officer. For those unfamiliar with the workings of tier li junior hockey in this area, this category of ju- nior hockey, prior to this season, existed in two forms — the Ontario Hockey Association's Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey League and the Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League. The Metro league, for several seasons, existed as an 'outlaw' league not sanctioned under the OHA umbrella. This past summer, the deep thinkers within the two leagues finally saw the proverbial light and took steps to merge the two leagues. For those in- volved in this level of hockey, the integration of the leagues made sense for all the right reasons. It would allow teams to compete in a geographic sphere which will keep travel costs down for the owners, allow rivalries to be built which would, in turn, create more fan interest and simply create better hockey for all concerned. Nov, that the regular season in the new Ontario Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey League is less than a month away, coaches of the Ajax Axemen and the Pickering Panthers are preparing their clubs to play in the newly -formed Eastern Conference consisting of the Ajax Axemen, Pickering Pan- thers, Bowmanville Eagles, Oshawa Legionaires, Port Hope Buzzards, Cobourg Cougars, Lindsay Muskies, Trenton Sting, Bancroft Hawks, Kingston Voyageurs, Wellington Dukes, Peterbor- ough Bees and the Syracuse Junior Crunch. Panthers' head coach Rod McGillis is con- vinced the conference will be the toughest in the entire league, with numerous natural rivalries, in- cluding the Axemen and the Panthers who'll meet for the first time ever this season. It's expected to make it extremely competitive. "It might be the best division to play in junior hockey," notes Mr. McGillis. "We're definitely going to have our hands full. I think there's going to be a lot of parity in the league. The teams that get out of the blocks quickly and work hard should do well:' Axemen head coach Mark Watson agrees there will be no gimme games throughout the 52 -game regular -season schedule as he suspects all teams within the conference will be competitive. The Heat struggled all season, however, as a higher - calibre junior team and ended up finishing eighth in regular - season play. During the first playoff game against Oak Ridges, the Heat carne out like gang- busters, but wilted in the lat- ter stages of the game to drop a 13-6 decision. Pickering sprinted out to a 5-1 lead in the first inning as Anthony Paradiso, Pickering's lead-off batter, got on base with a walk and later scored. Chris MacLeod belted a triple to right field, scoring Paradiso. Next to the plate was Billy Keith who singled to bring home MacLeod. Ricky Chester made the Oak Ridges pitcher hurl sonic good balls but, unfortunately, flied out to centre field. Steven Valentini singled, but after a great de- fensive play by the opposi- tion got Valentini at second base. Jeff Magee singled to right field as did Justin Over, both of whom scored. Matt King got on base with a sin- gle and was left stranded as was Bryan Gillespie. Oak Ridges kept chipping away at the scone while Pickering's bats got quieter. Pickering rallied in the sixth inning with Paradiso scoring again. Ryan Miller, Tyler Pelley and Oliver Salmon all made great attempts to get on base but to no avail. In the second game, Pickering came up against host Aurora. Pickering had trouble generating some of- fence against a strong Aurora squad which went on to win 8-2. Crossing the plate for Pickering were Steven Valen- tini and Bryan Gillespie. As part of the playoff tournament, Aurora hosted a Golden Glove Competition. Pickering's representative was veteran catcher Billy Keith. With five competitors remaining, a bad bounce off of Keith's glove kept him from winning the Golden Glove title. Joining the core of regu- lars from last year were Steven Valentin, Justin Over, Bryan Gillespie and Tyler Pelley who were all an asset to the team. The team is coached by Norm MacLeod, Paul Magee, Jim Gillespie and Liz Keith. Urquhart and Matthew Firth handled the pitching duties for the Spar- tans. Second baseman Ali made an out- standing defensive play. In the second game, Ajax mercied Guelph after being ahead 15-3 after the fourth inning. Devon Smith pitched the fust three innings, holding Guelph to two runs. Firth pitched the fourth inning for Ajax, facing five batters. Offensively, Devon Smith went three -for -three with two tuns scored; Firth and Ali each went two -for -three with Firth scoring two runs; Oxenholm, Matanovic and Scott Conely each went two -for -two with two runs scored; Baweja went two -for -two with one run scored; Urquhart, Hillis and Prentice each went one -for -two with one run scored; Beckett and Ruelens were one -for -duce respectively at the plate with Beckett scoring a run. It was a pitchers' battle, but Pickering's Moss was up to the challenge, striking out nine batters and with the help of stellar defensive play the Heat defeated Newmarket 7-6. Pickering played the Oshawa Stingers, who finished second in the reg- ular season. Moss posted another stellar pitching effort to help Pickering to a 6-3 win, sending the squad on to the title game. Joshua Raycroft scored Picker- ing's tint run in the second inning, but Oshawa scored in their half of the sec- ond to the keep the score tied. In the third inning Oshawa took the lead by scoring two more runs. Matt Ferguson and Josh Raycroft each hit a home run to tie the contest again. The tic lasted until the sixth inning when Jesse Raycroft homered to give the local mites the lead. Pickering held a one -run leading going into the final inning. Ferguson and Tan- nahill scored insurance runs. Pickering players took part in the tourney's skills competition with Moss winning the home run derby, Tannahill finishing third in the accuracy throw and Galego finishing fourth in base running.
