Up to three tornadoes
may have touched down in
Pickering late Thursday af-
ternoon during a violent
storm that flooded base-
ments, washed out streets,
uprooted trees, knocked out
power and caused chaos for
motorists.
And while the activity on
Environment Canada's
Doppler "isn't clearly tor-
nadic: ' severe weather me-
teorologist Phil Chadwick
said the reports of twisters
came from "an area where
you would expect tunnel
clouds to form"
He noted tornadoes
"happen just about any-
where where lake breezes
intersect with developing
'thunderstorms" and con-
cluded "something like that
could have happened" in the
Altena Road area of Picker-
ing shortly after 4 p.m.
From the description of
the damage he received
from Durham Regional Po-
lice — who fielded three re-
ports of possible tornadoes
— Mr. Chadwick believes
the tunnel clouds could be
an F -zero level.
That means winds of up
to 115 kilometres an hour
that uprooted trees, buckled
aluminum sheds and ripped
shingles off roofs.
The next level is F- 1,
where you could expect
winds of 115 to 180 kilome-
tres an hour and hydro tow-
ers could be damaged. None
of the damage reported is
consistent with that descrip-
tion, said Mr. Chadwick.
Weather warnings were
issued before the storm hit
to prepare area residents.
Staff from Environment
Canada were to inspect the
damage Thursday evening.

Joe Bennett reported the de-
partment's communications
staff were "going crazy" re-
sponding to calls.
Surprisingly, police
force communications su-
pervisor Ian Wilson report-
ed there had only been five
traffic accidents on Ajax
and Pickering roads be-
tween 3:30 and 7 p.m. No
serious injuries were report-
ed.

PICKERING — The town
may not lose one of its major cor-
porate citizens after all.
Though C1earNET Communi-
cations Inc. is moving its head-
quarters to larger offices in Scar-
borough, the company is likely to
keep its Pickering site for at least
another year and perhaps perma-
nently, according to David Wells,
vice-president of employee ser-
vices.
"We have some very definite
ideas as to how we could put the
space to very good use:' he says.
There was considerable angst
at Town hall and in the local busi-
ness community when C1earNET
revealed a year -and -a -half ago
that it was pulling up stakes here
to move to the Consilium build-
ing at McCowan Road and Hwy.
401. The company, a leader in the
telecommunications sector, occu-
pies most of the C1earNET build-
ing at 1305 Pickering Parkway
just east of Liverpool Road. Ren-
ovations at the Consilium are not
yet finished and the transition to
the new facility, which was to be
finished by the end of 1997, is

big enough to hold the rapidly -

An Ajax mother and her three
children are among 15 people
charged with running a well -orga-
nized crime ring specializing in
commercial break-ins.
The majority of the arrests were
made in the past two weeks by the
Durham Regional Police break -
and -enter squad, which had been
investigating a string of heists earli-
er this year in Ajax, Pickering,
Bowmanville and Bobcaygeon.
More arrests arc expected in the
coming weeks.
Police said thieves netted about
$60,000 in cash and an estimated
$200,000 in property, including ve-
hicles and clothing, during the
break-ins.
"They were apparently very
well -organized in that they used
two-way radios to communicate
with one another (during heists)
and they were able to get around se-
curity alarm systems;" Sergeant Jim
Grimley said yesterday.
In two of the break-ins, full-size
safes were stolen from businesses,
only to be later found dumped in
open fields in Ajax, emptied of
their contents, police said.
Among those arrested were a 42 -
year -old Ajax woman, her two sons,
aged 23 and 19, and a daughter,
aged 20.
Police allege the mother was an
accessory to the thefts and assisted
in selling the stolen property. She
and her older son are also accused
of threatening a witness in the case.
"The 23 -year-old son is alleged
to have been one of the key play-
ers," Sgt. Grimley said.
The brothers are also accused of
trying to smuggle drugs into Whit-
by Jail.

Workfare must
be expanded
One of the central planks of the Common Sense Rev-
olution, right up there with a 30 per cent provincial in-
come tax cut, was the concept of workfare, or work for
welfare.
The Tories. heard over and over again from middle-
class voting Ontarians that the concept of welfare in its
current state, was not what they wanted. As part of their
pledge as they took office in June of 1995, the Conser-
vatives promised to institute a workfare plan during the
life of their mandate.
The time has come to fully make good on that
promise.
Workfare, like many other Tory promises (with the
notable exception of the tax cut) has had a bumpy, un-
even ride over the past few years. The Province has
brought it in slowly and has stuck to a plan which sees
it used in not-for-profit and public sector industries.
There haven't been many workfare recipients as the
government has taken a cautious, slow approach.
That may change now, and it should. There is a move
afoot to bring workfare into the private sector. Howev-
er. there are two notable problems which the govern-
ment must deal with before workfare can be expanded.
Those currently working cannot be laid off and brought
back or replaced by workfare recipients. Critics of the
private sector plan argue higher -paid employees will to
replaced by low -paid workfare workers.
"Wc cannot replace people already in jobs. That's
been our bottom-line rule since day one and it still is our
bottom-line rule;' says Janet Ecker, Community and So-
cial Services Minister, who is responsible for workfare.
Also, government subsidized job programmes like
jobsOntario, Ontario Works and Job Connect are, by
their nature designed to provide temporary relief to the
unemployed. Workfare is designed to keep people
working on a more permanent basis, to be at least a foot
in the door.
"We don't want it where the subsidy ends, the job
ends;" says Ms. Ecker.
If the government can meet these two distinct and
difficult challenges, workfare in the private sector can
be a success.
Welfare recipients, for the most part, want to work
and want to better their station in life. We applaud any
attempt the government makes to get more people off
the welfare rolls and on to the employment rolls.

Internet -a wed
to conceive?
There is no doubt the Internet has
opened up a world of information to people
around the globe.
You can point and click your way just
about anywhereand see just about any-
thing. It's educational and entertaining.
But it's also increased accessibility to
inappropriate material and has opened the
door to exhibitionists around the world.
One of the pitfalls of living in the infor-
mation age is the fact that there is' just too
much information.
Is there nothing deemed private any-
more?
Call me a prude, but I think there are
some things that are personal that shouldn't
be broadcast to the world online.
Just last month, a 40 -year-old Florida
woman gave birth to a boy in front of thou-
sands of people who witnessed the delivery
by logging onto their computers.
The June 16 birth was billed as the first
Internet delivery and while cameras were
reportedly discreetly placed and viewers
saw nothing more graphic than they'd sec
on an episode of ER, one has to wonder
why you would want millions of people to
witness such a private moment.
The mother, who has only been identi-
fied as Elizabeth, said she agreed to the
broadcast because she wanted to educate
other women.
Now, again in the name of education,
two American teens say they're planning
another first, for themselves and the Inter-
net.
The couple, calling themselves Diane
and Mike, both 18 years old, say they are
planning to lose their virginity on their own
website next month.
The couple's lawyer reports the teens
plan to air their first sexual encounter in
early August on their website www.our-
firsttime.com.
He's also said the couple hope to keep
the event as intimate as possible and reports
the teens' idea was inspired after they saw
the birth online last month.
"We want to show that the act of making
love, which is the first step that brought
that live birth about, is just as beautiful —
and nothing to be ashamed about," the cou-
ple say on their website.
Apparently the teens have decided to
take it upon themselves to try to change
sexual attitudes and make a statement about
safe sex and freedom of choice. '
I'm all for freedom of choice, but come
on. Is this really necessary? Sexual educa-
tion shouldn't be something children learn
about online. Certainly not by watching
two teens engaging in the act itself.
The need to police and censor cyber-
space is controversial, but, given the num-
ber of inappropriate sites on the net, some-
thing has to be done.

PICKERING — It was Sept. 15, 1975
when three women barricaded themselves into
a north Pickering farmhouse to stop bulldozers
from knocking it down to make way for an air-
port.
They belonged to People or Planes, a group
of area residents whose homes were to be ex-
propriated for the international airport which
had been announced by the federal government
in 1972. POP managed to raise such a fuss, and
poke so many holes in the various government
arguments which insisted the new airport in
rural Pickering was necessary, that both the
provincial and federal governments had to back
down and shelve the airport plan indefinitely.
Now, a quarter century after the airport was
announced, there are still no runways in north
Pickering. So it can't be said the resident%' vic-
tory was short-lived. But it certainly wasn't
permanent, and it definitely hasn't been com-
plete.
Ottawa an `awful landlord'
The federal government still owns the 7,350
hectares (18.600 acres) north of Hwy. 7 rough-
ly between Brock Road and the
PickeringjMarkham townline expropriated for
the airport, and leases 800 properties on it to
tenant farmers and households. And Ottawa
has been an "awful landlord", according to
north Pickering resident Lome Almack, an
original POP member who managed to hang
on to his property just south of Claremont.
'Iitey're gradually destroying all the hous-
ing because they don't fix it up:' says Mr. Al-
mack.
Tenant% are reluctant to spend much of their
own money on home repairs when they don't
know how long they will he allowed to stay,
and vacant properties and abandoned buiklings
on the lands have attracted vandals and arscn-
isLs.
' Ilrere's garbage all over the place:' says
Mr. Almack. "Ibere's no security so people
drive through and dump their old refrigerators
off. 1 bet there hasn't been a new fence built in
that 58 square miles in 20 years"
Ottawa has been spending more in recent
years on the upkeep of the lands, according to
Don Maclean, regional director for pro-
grammes with Transport Canada, the federal
landlord.
`Tenants will always complain'
"We recognized a number of years ago we
had to do sonic extra work. We're managing
the properties pretty well, I feel. It's like any
other landlord, tenants will always complain."
Mr. MacLean adds some of the buildings,
many of which are quite old, were already in
poor condition when they were expropriated.
Transport Canada's operating budget for
managing the lands is currently about $2.6 mil-
lion, and in recent years $1 million to $3.1 mil-
lion on top of that has been spent annually on
capital improvements. With rental income of
about $4 million from the lands, Mr. Maclean
says, the government is not quite breaking
even.
Though the fells are continuing to hang on'
to the property, don't expect any initiative to
build an airport on it to come from Ottawa, says
Mr. MacLean. Jurisdiction over airports has
been handed over by the federal government to
local bodies across the country, including the
Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA).
'Transport Canada is out of the airport busi-
ness. Any decision on the future of an airport in
the Pickering area will be a matter for determi-
nation by local interests — 'local' being the
Greater Toronto Area, not necessarily the Town
of Pickering or the Region of Dufiazn:'
For its part, Durham Region is raring to go
on a new airport in Pickering. In 1995 Durham

Council formally requested the federal govem-
ment protect the site for an airpxrt and asked
the GTAA to support it. The request followed
the release of a Transport Canada study which
concluded Pearson would reach its maximum
capacity by 2012 and that Pickering was an
ideal site for a corporate -commuter airport and
a preferred site for an international airport that
would he needed in the longer term. Just this
past March, the Region agreed to participate in
the drafting of a memorandum of understand-
ing with the GTAA to work together toward
having an airport built and sorting out the terms
under which it could he developed.
`Major economic boon'
"I don't think we'll ever see another inter-
national airport ( built in the GTA) in our life-
time:" says Regional Chairman Roger Ander-
son. "But there's nothing
wrong with an industrial
cargo airport. It would be
-

the Region of Durham.
The jobs that it would cre-
ate would be phenomenal.
The industrial growth
would be even larger. The

According to Mr. Anderson, it will likely be
10 to 15 years before a runway is built at the
Pickering site, mostly because the existing
Pearson airport will take that long to reach its
maximum capacity.
'There's no intense lobbying going on or
anything right now. Basically, it lies with the
federal government. If (Ottawa) wants to give
us the responsibifity Regional Council will be
more than happy to act on it. But the fact is the
federal government zones federal lands."
Akport Janda `valuable asset'
The GTAA appears to share Durham Re-
gion's enthusiasm for the Pickering site.
"It's a tremendously valuable asset:, says
GTAA vice-president of strategic planning
Steve Shaw. "We're very, fortunate to have it.
We want to see it used at the right time and in
the right manner."
The right time, according to Mr. Shaw, will
be when the Oshawa and Buttonville
(Markham) airports need to be replaced, when-
ever that will be.
"lite timing is totally dependent on the due
process to be followed and the demand."
Mr. Shaw maintains Durham Region and
York Region (which also has an interest in see-
ing the site developed) must "take a lead" on
the airport issue. While it is the federal govern-
ment that must Lone the land, he says. Ottawa
will only do so in response to the Regions. He
suggests the memorandum of understanding
currently being drawn up will be- what demon-
strates local commitment to the project.
Local commitment, however, looks to be no
more local than the Whitby headquarters of
Durham Region. Past Pickering Councils arc
on record as opposing an airport. and last year
Pickering only agreed to make provision for
the facility in it% new Oficial Plan after having
it.% arm twisted by the Region, Which must ap-
prove the OR A 1995 survey by the Ajax -Pick-
ering Board of Trade did indicate 74 per cent of
members who responded supported a 'corpo-
rate/commuter' airport at the site. However.
Pickering residents have shown little interest in
tic project. except for those who oppose it out-
right.
`Keep land for farming'
Mr. Almack is now a director with the
Green Door Alliance, a group of area residents
who would like to see the airport lands kept as
an agricultural preserve instead.
"It's the best (agricultural) land in Canada
and we ought to keep it in farming:' he says.
"We are in touch with our MPs to try to en-
courage them to sell the lands with conserva-
tion agreements registered on title. This is
Toronto's green door. This is the one area of
Toronto that's still green. It's a wonderful op-
portunity"
Mr. Almack doesn't believe there'll be an
airport because there's simply no money to
build it, no matter what Regional politicians
would like.
"Everybody believes in Santa Claus when
you get down to it.'
He also doesn't expect there to be a need for
another airporL He notes that when the Picker-
ing site was expropriated in 1972 the experts
were saying 64 million people would be flying
out of Pearson every year in 2000, and it looks
like the figure will be closer to 24 million now.
Chrome of airport ` *t ally nil'
Bryon Hunie, chairman of an area resi-
dents' group called the Committee for the Pick-
ering Airport Community, believes the chance
is '%irtually nil" for an airport ever to be built
in Pickering.
.. 'There was no sense in putting an airport
here in 1972 and there's no sense now;' he
says.
Instead of a bustling air terminal and boom-
ing businesses on the property, Mr. Hurrle en-
visions prime farmland, noting that's a valuable
commodity considering agriculture is the sixth
biggest industry in Canada. The irony, he ad-
mits, is that if the area hadn't been expropriat-
ed for the airport envisioned in 1972, there
would he no possibility of preserving the green
space today because it would have long been
taken over by urbanization and development.
Mr. Hun -le agrees in principle with the con-
cept of selling the lands with agricultural ease-
ments to preserve them, but worries most of the
current residents, many of whom are by now
elderly and/or disabled, won't be able to buy
the properties they live on. He wants those peo-
ple to he dealt with in a "humane- manner. no
matter what happens.
Still. Mr. Hurrle says some kind of solution
which will take the lands out of their current
limho would probably be a good thing. But he
doesn't believe a resolution is imminent.
" I think it's going to stay on the back hum-
er a long time;' he says, noting Ottawa is fac-
ing plenty of other more pressing issues. "Ibis
is a very small problem for them."
Airport costs prohibitive
Pickering Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick
Johnson, who represents the area but has been
unable to vote on airport issues because he's a
tenant on the lands, maintains the cost of an air-
port would be more prohihitive than it% propo-
nents imagine and its benetit% much less re-
warding.
"Nobody's done a feasibility study on it:' he
says. -Who's going to come up with that kind
of money'"
Cozen. Johnson notes it would take many
million.% of dollars to get water and sewer ser-
vice into the area. and cites the Pickering nu-
clear station as evidence infrastructure meea-
projects often hnng mega -headaches to a com-
munitv.
If the: airport zeas built, adds Ceun. Johnson,
development would he- taking place on the sen-
sitive Oak Ridges Moraine, and the airplanes
would have to fly ever densely -populated areas
in the south.
"They'll be flying them right over down-
town Pickering"
Public input needed first
Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs says he
can see the need fir an airport at some point in
the future and suggests the: reaction among
town residents to actually having it built would
be "mixed".
"It's a matter more of timing rather than
whether it will or won't happen. I think some
form of an airport will happen. But I don't see
it happening quickly.
"I don't share the same degree of enthusi-
asm about the potential (as some Regional
politicians)", he says, adding any airport is like-
ly to bring some of the type of development
which currently surrounds the Pearson airport.
"I'm not convinced the tradeoffs are what the
community is prepared for or what the com-
munity wants,"
Still, the mayor says he is optimistic some
kind of "balance" can be reached between
those who want the airport and those who
don't, by preserving at least the agricultural
area around the site.
According to Mayor Arthtrs, if and when
preparations to build an airport proceed, the
Town will insist on public input into the
process. But at this stage, he doesn't think pro-
ponents or opponents of the airport should get
too worked up. After all, the lands were expro-
priated over 25 years ago and progress toward
actually having an airport built on them has
been "almost zilch".

nuclear plant
PICKERING —The Environment Ministry is investi-
gating a spill of up to 150X) gallons of sewage at the Pick-
ering nuclear station Monday afternoon.
Around 3 p.m., it was discovered sewage from the sta-
tion administration building had overflowed from a pump-
ing sump and spilled on to a gravelled area. There was no
release to storm sewers or the lake. The cause was related to
operational problems with the automatic pump -out of the
sump.
"There's absolutely no question of any radioactive water
or radioactive material in there said station spokesman Pat

Oshawa peaked at a 67 on
the air quality index Wednes-
day, the highest recorded
along the lakeshore, although
Stouffville hit the 80s, says
David Yap, co-ordinator for
air quality and meteorology
for the Province.

of vehicles in the GTA.
"Smog is a human health
problem that is responsible
for 1.800 deaths and several
hundred thousand illnesses in
Ontario each year."
According to the min-
istry's experts, ground -level
ozone registering above 50
on the air quality index can
lead to irritation when breath-
ing in sensitive people, and
cause possible lung damage
when they're physically ac-
tive. People with heart and
lung disorders are at a greater
risk, and the pollution can al-
so damage some plants.
"Because the numbers
tend to peak in the early after-
noon, we suggest that people
avoid exerting themselves at
that time;' Yap said. `And it
would be prudent for people
who are already prone to the
effects of airborne pollution,
including those with heart and
lung disease or asthma, to re-
main indoors"

Police nail
car theft
suspects
in chase
A police chase that began in Toron-

Ajax ended in Bowmanville after a
stolen car drove over a spiked belt,
blowing out its tires.
Toronto Police abandoned pursuit
of the vehicle, which was then spotted
in Oshawa on Highway 401 about
5:35 a.m. Sunday.
Durham Regional Police officers
tailed the vehicle as it travelled east at
speeds of about 100 km -h. At the
same time, officers further east in
Bowmanville placed a "stop stick" on
the roadway.
The chase came to a quick end af-
ter the stolen vehicle passed over the
stick, deflating both front tires,
Sergeant Jim Grimley said.
The disabled car stopped after exit-
ing at Liberty Street, and two occu-
pants were arrested without incident,
Sgt. Grimley said.
Jamie Charles Lawson, 36, and
Darnell Heffernan, 29, are charged
with possession of stolen property,
while Mr. Lawson is also charged with
failing to stop for police, driving while
disqualified, dangerous driving and
impaired driving.
Both men have no fixed address.

Durham Access to Care will
receive $4.8 million in addi-
tional annual funding to help
provide in-home health care
services.
That brings the total fund-
ing for these services in the re-
gion to $34.8 million, says
Janet Harris, chief executive
officer of Durham Access to
Care.
"It's certainly a step in the
right direction, no doubt about
it;" she says. Ms. Harris says
the funding will help move
Durham closer to the provin-
cial average for in-home health
care services.
Currently in Durham, $73
per capita is spent on these ser-
vices compared to the provin-
cial average of $101.
The funding, announced
!Monday by Cam Jackson, Min-
ister Responsible for Seniors,
is part of $83.7 million given to
33 community care access cen-
tres (CCAC) across the
province. The centres provide
service such as in-home nurs-
ing, therapy and homemaking
to people requiring them,
through contracts with local
agencies.
This year's annual funding
increase is part of an eight-year
boost to CCACs announced by
Health Minister Elizabeth Wit-
mer in April. Mr. Jackson an-
nounced the individual
amounts for each eligible area
on Monday.
Although the funding was
announced by the minister re-
sponsible for seniors, Ms. Har-
ris stresses the money will be
used to provide services to all
residents requiring them, re-
gardless of age.
"This funding is definitely
long-term care funding for all
ages — infant, adult, young
adult, seniors ... anvone who
needs care in their home or in
their school (in the case of
children);" she says.
The funding is needed to
help Durham Access to Care
cope with its ever-growing
case load, which the centre was
struggling to do with the $30
million it was originally given
to operate in 1998.
"What we're finding as this
fiscal year continues is as the
growth continues we weren't
able to keep with the $30 mil-
lion;" Ms. Harris says. "We
can't do it at $30 million, that's
for sure "
Durham Access to Care
serves 5,000 clients each
month, a 24 -per cent increase
in the number from last year
when the centre began opera-
tion, says Ms. Harris.
"And we're expecting con-
tinued growth;" she says.
Ms. Harris attributes the
growth in clients to hospital re-
structuring, meaning patients
spend less time in hospital and
recover at home. And, she says.
"In Durham, where we arc ex-
periencing substantial growth
compared to the rest of the
province, it's a double wham-
my.
Provincial spending on
CCAC services will be $276.5
million, or 40 per cent more,
than in 1994-95, according to a
Ministry of Health press re-
lease.

GM still idled by'U.S. strike
As the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike at two
General Motors parts plants in Flint, Mich., enters its
seventh week, approximately 180,000 workers in
North America are waiting at home for word to go
back to work.
The number of strike -affected assembly plants
remains 26, with only the Ramos Arizpc. Mexico
small -car assembly plant, the Oshawa Truck Plant,
and the Saturn facility in Spring Hill, Tenn., fully op-
erational.
However, that too may change. The Oshawa
Truck Plant's status is being evaluated day to day,
and the Saturn facility has recently been given per-
mission to strike.
Of the total 67,856 assembly employees affected,
6,707 work at Canadian assembly operations (2,715
at Oshawa Plant #2; 2,565 at Oshawa #1: and 1,427
at Ste. Therese).

stands at 12,017,
with 5.7(X) of those

US$4.5 billion from
its cash reserve
(meant to whether
the downs in auto
industry cycles)
which stood at
USS 13.6 billion on
March 31 of this
year. Although that
is a substantial loss.
analysts are predict-
ing GM can hold
out quite a bit
longer, especially if it proceeds with plans to with-
hold medical benefits to striking workers.
That plan would put a crimp in the UAW strike
fund estimated at around US$880 million. The
union is paying out US$150 per week to each strik-
ing worker, (roughly US$7 million total outlay since
the strike began). Picking up medical payments
would bite deeply into the strike fund. but that is not
insurmountable especially if the union receives fi-
nancial support from other unions (such as the
Teamsters and United Steelworkers) as it did during
the 67 -day strike of 1970.
So far, GM has lost roughly US$1.2 billion in
profits and the production of about 230,000 vehicles.
Analysts estimate that GM would lose US$5(X) mil-
lion and production of 105,(X)[) cars and trucks per
week, for every week the strike continues.

"'Macbeth' is very
colourful and is meant to
move at an incredible and
serious pace;' says Drift-
wood Theatre's artistic di-
rector. "(In this play) we
have action, adventure,
strong characters and the
energy is outstanding."
'Macbeth' tells the story
of a brave mar, who returns
home after defending his
country in battle and em-
barks on a journey of be-
trayal, jealousy and fear.
All this is set in motion af-
ter his wife prods him to
murder the king and declare
himself leader of the nation.
With a stolen crown. Mac-
beth begins his vicious rule,
dominated by oppression
and fear. The country re-
volts, led by the only man

Once Macbeth's friend and
ally, Macduff is now a dan-
gerous foe spurned on by
vengeance. As Macbeth de-
scends further into dark-
ness, his very humanity is
stripped away and replaced
by a cancerous evil that, in
turn, feeds upon itself and
devours the man complete-
ly.
Smith says the fact the
group was taking on its
most ambitious production
required careful casting.
"I can't tell you how dif-
ficult auditions were,"
Smith recalls. "I'm a big
fan of energy and I like to
work with actors who are
emerging in the field.
-I also ask that people
trust me;' he adds. "People

a lot of time up high (on a
scaffold that is part of the
set)."
The summer season,
which is at Pickering's Esp-
lande Park on July 22 and at
Ajax at Rotary Park on July
24 and again on July 30, is

the theatre group with 18
performances in 25 nights
at 12 different locations.
The Ajax and Pickering
shows begin at 8 p.m.
Ajax's Rotary Park is on
Lake Drivewat West, while
Pickering's Esplanade Park

ABC Rally in Bobcaygeon.
Katie Shipley, of Pickering, compet-
ing in the training level, finished first in
dressage and third m the cross-country
event for a third-place overall finish.
A rally is akin to eventing where rid-
ers compete in three distinct events —
dressage, cross-country and stadium
dumping. Penalty points are deducted
through all throe phases and the horse
and rider with the lowest penalty total are

third by winning 7-0 in a tiebreaker. In
doubles, Darrell Hariadi and Brent Ching
split sets with Alex Bitterrnan and Jason
Muszynski 6-4, 3-6, but once again Just
Desserts was victorious in a thrilling
match -deciding tiebreaker by a 10-8
scone. In the third match, Jordan Kauf-

Gardening Can Save Money, Provide Exercise
When times are tough, many families start to cut down on leisure
activities. Instead of going out to the movies or for a bite to eat, numerous
Canadians choose inexpensive activities they can do at home.
One such activity -- gardening -- can help save a little money and take a
step toward improving the environment at the same time. And planting a
garden offers other benefits. It can provide good physical exercise and
save money on the family food bill. Gardening also is one activity in
which the whole family can participate.
With a little planning and care -- and a small investment -- a garden can
provide months of enjoyment.
Having a successful garden does not require extensive knowledge -- or a
green thumb. Here are some simple tips beginning gardeners need to
follow:
• Take photos of your lawn and house and bring them to the nursery.
They will help determine what types of greenery will look good and grow
best in your yard.
• Use composts, mulches and organic fertilizers to help soil stay
healthy. Good soil is essential to the growth of any plant because it holds
vegetation in place while retaining moisture and nutrients for the plant to
use.
• Prune plants by removing dead stems and leaves. It is important to the
development and maintenance of your garden. By cutting away diseased
areas and thinning out sections to permit more sunlight, flowers will
continue to blossom and provide plenty of opportunities for photos.
• Add to the look of the garden by using trellis or night lighting. Stone
statues and strategically placed benches will add to the design of your
yard.
• Keep records of all your horticultural successes and failures. If a
particular plant blooms well in your garden, snap an instant photo of it and
keep it in a journal for future reference. If a flower doesn't grow, keeping
a photo of it will help keep you from repeating the mistake.

The Staff of
water gardening in our climate is not
as exotic as it might seem. More and
more gardeners are finding an area in
their gardens to provide for the tranquil-
lity and peace a water garden can pro-
vide.
There are a few things you should
know, however, before you embark on
such a project.
Site location is important. While the
shade of that large maple in your hack
yard might look inviting in the heat of a
summer's day, and the thought of water
trickling and gurgling completes the pic-
ture, locating a water garden in such a
spot will not make for happy plants.
Providing sufficient sunlight for water
plants should he first and foremost in
choosing the location. Most water plants
prefer full sun and for water lilies it is an
absolute must.
Once the site has been selected, there
are a variety of choices to make in terms
of the construction of the pool itself.
In our climate, I do not recommend
using concrete. On this, I speak from ex-
perience' It seemed sensible at the time.
Since I was having a foundation poured,
I thought it would be a simple matter to
use a concrete base for my pool. A sim-
ple matter it was not.
I dug the pond to a depth of about 24
inches in the centre area and created a
ledge about 18 inches around the outside.
This hard latxur you can't avoid, anv
pond needs a hold.
Next. I reinforced the pond with
chicken wire. This step is necessary
when using poured concrete (my con-
struction buddies told me this.) So far, so
good. Next came the spreading and mov-
ing of heavy, wet concrete. That seemed
an endless task, however once accom-
plished, the pool looked great. And it
was... that first summer. It was our typi-
cal Canadian winter that did the pool in.
When spring rolled around, I was
anxious to sea how my pool looked. How
disappointed I was. Unfortunately, the
frost had completely heaved the concrete
and it was cracked in several places. This
of course meant that if I didn't repair the
damage, all the water would seep out. I
spent days mixing concrete and doing
what 1 thought was repair work. The
pond was never the same, it always
leaked and each spring there were new
cracks to repair. What seemed like a
lovely idea had turned itself into a major
construction project every spring, one
which I was not willing to undertake.
I think the best, simplest and ulti-
mately most creative way to make a wa-
ter garden is to use PVC liners. Your pool
can be easily dug to any shape and size
and then a linter can be purchased ready-
made or custom-made depending on
your needs. Ready-made sizes vary from
two metres (6 -foot -6) square up to six -
by -eight metres (19 -foot -8 by 26 -foot -3)
and costs can vary from $60 to $700, as
it turns out, considerably less than
poured concrete! Linters come complete
with instructions for fitting the liner and
finishing the pond off.
Most gardeners who have water gar-
dens like to feature water lilies. The most
common font is a hardy water lily which
is a perennial so it will survive from year

to year. It is available in white, yellow,
red, pink and apricot.
Tropical water lilies can he day- or
night-hlooming and are frost tender so
that they won't survive our winters in this
region. They do however come in blue to
purple colour ranges, are often enormous
in size and their fragrance is unmatched.
All of this makes it worthwhile to in-
dulge a little. Usually then cost more
than the hardy types but the expense is
well worth it.
Other plant% you will find for your
garden include: the Egyptian lotus, water
hyacinths, marsh marigold, arrowhead,
yellow and blue water iris.
These plants are usually set into the
water in containers filled with a rich
clay -loam soil and can be fed with a spe-
cial fertilizer available in tablet form at
garden centres.
Thr most frequent problem associat-
ed with water gardens is the growth of al-
gae. A good rule to follow, is to try and
have at least 50 per cent of the water sur-
face covered with plant material and in
so doing reduce the amount of sunlight to
bottom.
Scavengers like the trap door snail
and the use of oxygenating plants will al-
so help to reduce algae.
Since water is the mosquito's
favourite breeding habitat your pond
will look inviting to them. Mosquitoes
are easily controlled however by intro-
ducing goldfish to the pond. To them,
mosquito larvae is a delicacy'

and will add a new dimension and focus
to your garden area.
