An employee of Gagnon Sports in Oshawa. he was off that day. But he chose to walk through the doors of the Simcoe Street South business shortly after 5:30 p.m. He vvas in the wrong place at the wrong time. Mr. Jenkins was shot in the arm by an armed attacker, since convicted of murder. That was the only bullet which hit the Oshawa man. Two oth- ers were also shot and storeowner Roger Pardy lost his life in a hail of bullets as the shooter and his accomplice made off with guns from the store. But the pair. who had earlier that day murdered Ken Thomas and had taken the Pickering man's car. left behind a number of devastated lives. Mr. Jenkins, who had recovered for the most part from the physical wounds within two months of the shooting, has never recovered mentally. He tried to continue working but was forced to leave Gagnon Spon% (now on Bloor Street East) after a patron walked into the store with an M-16 last summer. He was reminded of the "45 seconds from hell" he went through just three years before. He's since been unemployed and his employment insurance. which paid him S220 per week. ran out at the end of June. Hi% rent is $710 per month — the amount he's been receiving for the past 10 months is just $8x() per month. He'll now have to go on welfare if hes to receive any a%si %tancc. There are a few glimmers of hope for Mr. Jenk- ins who couldn't qualify for %Vorkcrs' Compensa- tion becau%c he was 'off' on the day of the %hoxx- ing. Oshawa MPP Jetty Ouellette has vowed to to to but for Mr. Jenkin% and Mr. Ouellette's office has recommended he pursue funds from the Ontario Disabilities Support Programme. It's one avenue open to him as is the Victim% of Criminal Compensation fund which could pay him up to maximum of S25.(XX). But there's no guarantee of any payment from either body. Mr Jcnkmn readily admits he'% having a tough time. is not a cry for help, it's a %crcam for help. i want to pay taxe% again. 1 want to work. I love to work. i like being repo n%ihlc" But Mr. Jenkin% is running out of hope and of course money. He meed% help. The Victims Crisis Assistance and Referral Scr%ice% may offer some tk-Tc for him. In a June I I press rclea%c, Durham Centre MPP and Solic- itor General Jim Flahcrty said, "Victims Crisis Assi%lance and Referral Services (VCARS) pro- vide immediate, on-site support for victims of crime." It's certainly high -time for Mr. Jenkins to get the support he so obviously needs. Victim.% of vio- lent gime deserve a better fate — as Mr. Jenkins nixes: "This government is willing to spend 580.000 to $90,000 per year to incarcerate the com icted murderers. human vermin. at same cor- rectional facility. Their intention is to keep them there for 25 years with no parole. This amounts to a figure of over S4 million:' Victims of violent crime need financial com- pensation to cope with job loss, therapy (physical and mental) and other costs associated with get- ting back on their feet again. The government must do something to help. Pickering Hospital lets parents stay with kids until just before surgery To the editor: In response to the Ncws Advertiser story headlined 'Mom fights to stay with ailing son until anesthesia surgery'. 1 am pleased to inform you that The Salvation Army Scarhxm- ough Grace Hospital is one of three hospitals in the province that dotes allow a parent w remain with their child until the surgery anesthesia has taken effect. Now in its second year. the 'Til 1 Sleep' programme at Scar- borough Grace Hospital reduces anxiety in both parents and chil- dren and makes a child's hospi- tal experience very positive. More than 1,000 families have participated in the programme and response from parents and children has been overwhelm- ingly positive. The programme is a benefit to operating room staff and physicians as well as parents because it makes the patient ing the parent in the operating room does not increase the length of time required for each case. About a week before surgery, parents and children are required to come into the hospi- tal for an education session with a child life specialist. Children enjoy the 'Hello Hospital' intro- ductory programme while par- ents watch a slide show and learn what is involved with the 'Til I Sleep' programme. Vermi- fomposting is simply composting indoors with red wiggler worms con- lained in a box of bedding. Apartment dwellers and office workers in particu- lar can divert their organic waste from landfill and at the sante time create a nutrient -rich soil conditioner for their plants. To create a vernicomposter, first obtain an opaque box about the size of a Blue Box. You can purchase a com- mercial unit with bedding or obtain a suitable size bin at any supermarket or hardware store. Drill a few small holes in the bottom for any excess drainage and punch air holes in the lid. A combination of materials such as chopped straw, grass, dried leaves, plants, dampened peat moss or shred- ded paper and pulp paper egg cartons can be used. Toss in a little soil to add micro-organisms and give the worms grit which helps them digest their food. Add water that has sat out overnight to allow the chlorine to evaporate. Your bedding should be as damp as a well -wrung sponge. The box can remain on a balconv but must be brought inside during the winter. The worms will eat vegetable and fruit peelings, coffee grinds and filter, tea bags, flowers and the paper. Always bury the food under the bedding to avoid fruit flies. Occasionally dry out egg shells and then crush them finely with a rolling pin. Sprinkle the shells into the bin every two weeks or so to give them calcium and to prevent the bedding from becoming leer acidic. After three months or so, you will notice the volume of materials has decreased substantially and the origi- LARRAINE ROULSTON RECYCLER' S REPORT nal bedding is no longer recognizable. Then, the finished compost and worms can be pushed over to one side of the bin and new bedding added to the vacant side. Put new food wastes into the fresh lidding only: the worms will move from the finished compost in search of new food. In a few weeks, you can scrimp out the finished com- post. Place it on newspaper under bright light. Any worms in the pile will burrow to the centre. Keep removing worn castings from the top and side layers. When the worms arc exposed, put them back into the bin along with the damp newspaper and any unfin- ished food scraps. The castings, as the vermicompost is called, will provide nutrients for your plants and will help the soil hold its moisture. The Environmental Factor in Whit- by (665-8927) sells red wiggler worms.
